LETTER FROM THE
EDITOR
It has been an exciting undertaking to develop a digital newsletter, giving a fresh, new look to our long-time publication for owners. In this issue of My Massanutten, we provide you with a few updates on how we continue to keep our owners, guests, and employees safe during the ongoing pandemic, features and perks of your ownership, activities you can enjoy during your next visit, and more. The past year was difficult for many of us, and that may even be an understatement. I personally found it helped me to be more mindful, grateful, and compassionate. We at Massanutten are thankful for our dedicated owners and are looking forward to a bright 2021 for all.
Best wishes,
Courtney Morris Contributing Editor

PAPERLESS BILLING MAKING
SMALLER PAYMENTS Just because you are billed once a year for your maintenance/annual fee doesn’t mean you can’t break that payment up throughout the year. You can reduce the total amount due by periodically making smaller payments, easing the burden of a one-time payment. If you look at it on a 12-month scale, there isn’t a property assessment at Massanutten that you couldn’t pay in full for less than $100/month.
Many owners are paying online at the owner’s website. Not yet registered? It only takes a couple minutes to register. You’ll need the primary last name, owner number (found on your owner statement), and zip code. Need assistance? Check out the how-to videos here. We also have agents ready to assist you through live chat on the website.
For owners in the first billing cycle: An opt-in feature was included on your invoice with room to provide the email address you wish to receive your e-statements and correspondence. If you missed it, no problem! Feel free to email us at ownersassoc@ massresort.com or speak to an agent through live chat on the owner’s website. For owners in the second billing cycle: Look for the option to opt in for this service on your upcoming invoice. Of course, feel free to contact us by email to the address above or speak to an agent via live chat. This is a great option for convenience and for the environment!

INDUSTRY NEWS Please be aware that Massanutten is consistently made aware of companies that defraud owners like you out of thousands of dollars with the promise of selling or renting their timeshare. These companies typically promise they can sell/rent your timeshare, allege they have a ready buyer/renter and usually charge large upfront fees. There are also relief companies which typically claim that you can be released from your contract and/ or relieved of your annual maintenance/assessment fees. Some of these companies even allege they have a relationship with Massanutten.
OF SCAMS
Don’t be tricked by professional-looking ads, documents, websites, or certain business ratings. These resale and relief companies usually shut down after a few years when they start to feel the pressure of government agencies or mounting lawsuits and simply start a new company. Be suspicious of companies that claim to be consumer advocates. Contact the State Attorney General and local consumer protection agencies in the state where the reseller is located to determine if there are any existing complaints.
HOW TO SPOT A SCAM: • UNPROMPTED INITIAL CONTACT • FALSE PROMISES If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. • UPFRONT FEES
CONTACT US! We urge you to not be fooled by any of these companies. Protect yourself and your timeshare ownership! Stay up to date on the latest scam offers in the resale market at owners.massresort.com/ billboard and www.arda-roc.org and be on the lookout for suspicious behavior. When in doubt, contact us at ownersassoc@ massresort.com.

COMMUNITY SU PP O RT At Massanutten, we believe in taking care of each other. We believe in serving our community. We believe in positivity. We believe in unity.
UWHR DO NATI O N
Holiday TOY DRIVE
Despite a year of setbacks coupled with struggles for many, Massanutten Resort was still able to make a two-thousand dollar donation to the United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Pictured below is Laura Toni-Holsinger, Executive Director for UWHR, posing from a safe and social distance. UWHR recognized Massanutten Resort as one of the Top 20 Most Generous Workplaces for 2019-2020.
The Massanutten WaterPark hosted its annual toy drive in partnership with the Elkton Area United Services (EAUS). From November 20 - December 20, guests and employees were invited to donate a toy in support of local families with children. Every child deserves to experience the magic of the holiday season. In all, over 233 toys were donated and distributed, spreading a little joy and cheer.
2020
TURKEY BOWL The annual Massanutten Resort Turkey Bowl was hosted on November 7, 2020 at Mountain Greens Golf Course. There were 67 players who participated in support of the Elkton Area United Services (EAUS) and the local community. Each year this event takes place, the participants are asked to donate a 10 lb. turkey for local families in need. The previous record donation was 53 turkeys. This year that record was almost doubled – 104 turkeys were collected and donated to the EAUS!

WHAT DO ES IT TAK E TO
make snow?
Snowmaking is a complicated equation. It involves water supply, energy, technical machinery, optimal conditions, and a whole lot of manpower.
WATER
Snowmaking requires water… and a lot of it! For instance, if you wanted to cover an acre with 1-foot of snow, one would need 175,000 gallons of water! With our improved snowmaking system, we are able to convert over 4,700 gallons-per-minute (or 282,000 gallons-per-hour) of water into snow, providing our riders with the best conditions possible!
19
RESORT UPDATES CONT.
COLD TEMPERATURES
The second element snowmakers need to make snow is cool temperatures. While water can turn into snow crystals at 32°F (0°C), ideal snowmaking conditions call for temperatures 28°F or lower. The colder and drier the conditions, the more effective snowmaking becomes. Here at Massanutten, dawn is typically the coldest part of the day, but we may not start making snow unless we will have more than 1-hour of optimal conditions.
LOW HUMIDITY / WET BULB TEMPERATURES
The wet bulb temperature is the lowest temperature that can be obtained by evaporating water into the air at a constant pressure, and is the most critical factor for snowmaking. That’s because the threshold temperature for snowmaking increases as humidity decreases. But, that also means that as humidity increases, temperatures need to be lower for snowmaking. The magic number for snow making is a 27° wet bulb temperature.
WHAT DO ES IT TAK E TO MAK E S N OW A COMPLEX SNOWMAKING SYSTEM
Our snowmaking system consists of air lines, water lines, electrical lines, water hydrants, and snow guns. Essentially, air and water are pumped from holding ponds up the mountain and mixed at the snow gun to produce snow. A nozzle then produces tiny water droplets which freeze as they fall through the air to produce machine-made snow (NOTE: There is nothing “artificial” about machinemade snow). Snow made in this manner is not a flake but a 3-dimensional snow “crystal” that has a much greater density than natural snow, making it perfect for building base depth!
NEW
SNOWMAKERS & GROOMERS
Last, but certainly not least, it takes a dedicated team of snowmakers and groomers to produce the best conditions all season long. Our snowmaking crew is constantly hard at work, whether they are prepping for the next cold spell or hiking the trails in the middle of the night, adjusting the guns. Then, our grooming staff comes in to get the slopes looking and feeling like there is a nice, fresh coat of snow for you to ride the next day.
CONT. Even though we make snow whenever possible, once a “base” is put down and packed, it is not necessary to make snow every day to remain open. It takes longer than one might think for snow to melt away, even at well above freezing temperatures. That being said, you don’t need to find snow in your backyard to go skiing or snowboarding. We normally begin making snow in early to mid-December and remain open until early March, or as long as Mother Nature allows!

I enjoy the variety that comes with the position – each day brings on new tasks and challenges. This season, during one work day, my FitBit recorded 11,771 steps (about 5 miles) taken in and around the Ski Office. - Lydia
I like the variety of work we get in Ski Maintenance – from production snowmaking to welding to revegetation projects, there is always a new project that is a puzzle to solve. - Jesse
Massanutten’s ski area is one of the most popular attractions at the Resort. The Snow & Mountain Recreation teams are some of our hardest working individuals, dedicating their time from the early morning hours to late at night. They bring new life to the mountain, transforming a biking destination to sparkling, snowbound ski slopes. Their goal is to bring our guests remarkable experiences that turn into fond memories for years to come. Meet some of our Snow & Mountain Rec teammates – they’ll see you on the mountain!
What is one stand out guest memory you’ve had since working at Massanutten? During the warmer months, the Family Adventure Park is your go-to destination at the resort for high-flying adventures through our many ziplines. As someone who adores working with children, I frequently find myself assigned to work over at the Kid's Adventure Course where children 12-years-old and younger can climb their way through various low-ropes obstacles finishing with a thrilling zip line ride. During a lull in the afternoon, I met Abby*, and we became fast friends as we maneuvered through the course. By the time we reached the end together, giggling from the exhilaration of completing the zip line, I had noticed that her parents had been quietly watching us from afar with tears streaming down her mother's face. In shock, I immediately apologized and sought to find a solution to the situation when the little girl's father interrupted me. He shared that due to extenuating circumstances, they thought that Abby might only make it through the first obstacle or two but wanted to allow her to try. Completing the course was an unimaginable challenge, and Abby had done just that. The unbridled joy expressed in that little girl's smile and the pride that radiated from her parents' faces is a moment that I will never forget. - Anna *Name has been changed to protect privacy of individual.
