Spring is in the Air...
SPRING HAS SPRUNG Spring is a lovely time to visit the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Across our region, roadsides, gardens, and open spaces are bursting into bloom with a riot of color. Fresh water cascades from mountain springs, wildlife reemerges

Massanutten.. IN BLOOM
DID YOU KNOW? THE WHITE FLUFFY “COTTON” FLOATING IN THE AIR ARE THE RIPE PODS OF COTTONWOOD TREES, WHICH GROW IN THE ARBORETUM AND UP BY THE SKI LODGE.
THE BLUE DAISY-LIKE FLOWERS THAT OFTEN GROW ALONG THE ROADSIDE ARE CHICORY, AND THEIR ROOTS CAN BE USED TO MAKE A COFFEE SUBSTITUTE.
THERE ARE MORE BLACK BEARS PER SQUARE MILE IN THE SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK THAN ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE EAST COAST! MASSANUTTEN MOUNTAIN IS A 50-MILE LONG, SIX-MILE WIDE MOUNTAIN RANGE OF ANCIENT SANDSTONE.
THE BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS OF THE DOGWOOD TREES ALL OVER OUR RESORT ARE NOT FLOWERS, BUT ARE ACTUALLY BUD SCALES OF THE FLOWER BUD. THE REAL FLOWERS ARE THE GREENISHWHITE “DOTS” IN THE CENTER.
Ramble On. Spring is an exhilarating time of the year, with its fragrant burst of flowers and buds.
Walking Among Wildflowers Massanutten is a wildflower paradise. Encouraged by the sun’s longer days and warmer temperatures, wildflowers are in a race to bloom before the trees overhead leaf out for the summer and cast them back into shade. Depending on th their i elevation l ti and d north/south th/ th orientation, some species can be found blooming well into May and June.

Massanutten’s native wildflowers range from exuberant Bluebells to showy Trillium and delicate Dutchman’s Breeches to captivating Lady’s Slipper Orchids. These wildflowers are ideal to photograph and enjoy in their natural habitats, but please don’t pick them, as they are essential for the health of pollinating insects, such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. For help in identifying these native beauties, please stop by our Nature Center located at the Ski Lodge.

SWING INTO SPRING
After a long cold winter, it’s time to get your groove back on our fairways. Massanutten’s two courses offer plenty of challenge, and gorgeous scenery at every turn. Mountain Greens Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole championshipstyle course that provides golfers a true test of their mountain golf abilities. Mountain Greens has undergone two renovation projects since it first opened in 1976. In 2004, we reopened the back nine holes after a full renovation, and two years later the front nine was renovated.
6 | MASSRESORT.COM
Woodstone Meadows Golf Course is a much newer course that offers golfers a respite from the most rigorous challenges of mountain golf. Woodstone’s layout provides an 18-hole, par 65 course consisting of nine par 3s, seven par 4s and two par 5s. Woodstone is more accessible for novice golfers, while still offering a challenge for experts. For those who want to work on their game, the Driving Range is open daily and features 25 practice stalls and a grass hitting area. A short game practice area is also available, featuring a practice green, chipping area, and a sand bunker. Private and group lessons are available from PGA-trained golf professionals.
Weekly Tournament Play: • 18-Hole Two-Person Scramble • 9-Hole Co-Ed • 9-Hole Adult Child • Par 3 Closest to the Pin More details at MassResort. com/Golf.
FlingGolf® Golfing for the rest of us! Massanutten is at the vanguard of the FlingGolf® movement in Virginia. With this more casual golf-inspired game, a blend of golf and lacrosse, you’ll be whipping the ball down the fairway in no time. Instead of hitting the ball with a club, you simply hurl your golf ball with a FlingStick®. It’s a family-friendly activity that’s perfect for golfers and non-golfers alike. JEL PARK FITNESS Th ink you need to go to the gym and lift weights to get a good workout? Luckily, you have access to James E. Lambert Park in the Woodstone Meadows Complex. The park has a half-mile walking/jogging trail, tennis courts, shuffleboard, playground, pavilion, and two workout stations. These workout stations, in the rear loop of the trail, allow you to work a variety of different muscle groups at the same time with a focus on strength conditioning and agility. They use gravity and your body weight as resistance. These exercises can be just as effective as using gym
machines or dumbbells. Each exercise station has an informational board that explains, simply how to use the equipment and lists different exercises to complete for three days. The exercises are divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Each station has eight different exercises for each day. Th is gives you the ability to strengthen and condition your whole body instead of just one area at a time. The variety of exercises makes these stations fun and effective. Switch up your routine and come to JEL Park!

ANIMAL FACTS: Meet the White-Tailed Deer White-tailed deer have excellent eyesight and hearing.
Antlers do not serve as weapons against predators, but are used during the mating season, when the males ďŹ ght to breed with females. Only male deer grow antlers, which are shed from January to March and grow out again each spring.
White-tailed refers to the white underside of the deer's tail, which it displays when it senses danger.
They like to browse for food at dawn and dusk. White-tailed deer feed on buds and twigs of maple, sassafras, poplar, and aspen as well as many shrubs. A young deer is called a fawn. An adult male deer is called a buck. The female is called a doe. They are good swimmers and will use large streams and lakes to escape predators. While white-tailed deer can live as long as two decades, their average lifespan in the wild is 2 – 3 years.
