Preparing for Our Fall Festivities GUILD PRESIDENT, KATHY WILSON, AND 2015 HALIFAX ART FESTIVAL CHAIR GEORGE FORTUNA

A

s the sunny days shorten and the temperatures go down a bit, we welcome all the festivities which happen in October and November. Fabulous Florida Fashions took place on October 13th at the Halifax Plantation Country Club. The sell out crowd was treated to beautiful and fun fashions from SteinMart while enjoying a fantastic luncheon. Whether it is stepping out in dressy clothes or just great casual attire, our Guild models showcased outfits from head to toe. The 53rd Halifax Art Festival is on November 7th and 8th, where the Guild puts on the annual art and crafts extravaganza. This 2 day event features over 240 artists and artisans from near and far. The HAF is a major event, benefiting all of our Museums. The annual Festival of

Trees event takes place in November too. First is Tea for Two, a tea and light tasty treats soiree on Sunday November 15th from 2-4pm. Our annual FOT Gala event is being held on November 19th from 6 - 9pm in the newly opened West Wing. Sample food from over 20 area restaurants, sip champagne and stroll around the decorated trees which may be purchased via a silent auction through Dec. 3rd. I wish to offer a Big Thank You to all the Guild volunteers, who work tirelessly at each of these events. It indeed takes a village.... and each of you contributes greatly to our FUN raising efforts.

In Memoriam A Tribute to Jackie Harrison On Sunday Sept. 6th Jackie Harrison passed away peacefully. What a wonderful, fulfilling life she had - her accomplishments are many! Jackie was the first President of the MOAS Guild, 53 years ago. She remained active all these years, most recently as the Guild Parliamentarian. In fact, Jackie was one of the originators for the Sidewalk Art Show -- now called the Halifax Art Festival.

Educated with her twin sister Gwen as nurses, Jackie also received a Master’s degree in Health Education. Jackie’s interests reached in many directions, holding various president’s positions, and was also named Volusia County “Woman of the Year” and nationally recognized by Eckerd’s as one of 100 women leaders. Her greatest love was her family, which brought her a lot of joy. She could be found singing, playing the piano, as well as painting and golfing and writing ”letters to the editor” with The News-Journal. The Guild members will forever remember Jackie and all that she did to make this world a better place. At the family’s bequest, a Don Emery portrait of Jackie is being donated to MOAS.

We say goodbye to the first president of the MOAS Guild. Portrait of Jackie Harrison by Don Emery
