Traffic Changer

My first idea was to make an application that changes traffic lights. The idea was that if you were waiting at a crossing or a traffic jam for a long period of time you could open the app and aim your phone at the desired traffic light/crossing using the camera function on your phone. The phone would then send a signal to the lights/crossing triggering them to change and you’ll be able to continue your journey.

Unfortunately, this turned out to be a terrible and very dangerous idea. This would probably cause mass confusion and produce a lot of accidents. Someone said that many more fights would break out on the roads with this app.

Initial Research

So after going back to the drawing board, I came up with cash points that dispense money every time you walk pass them (above). It was a much better idea than the first one although it still needed development. With inspiration from the Ludic Society, (left) I wanted to create a game you can play in real time.

With the idea planted in my head, the next obstacle was to decide what sort of device to put this game on. Smartphones was the main route I wanted to take and now a large majority of phones have touch screens, I wanted to use those and incorporate some gesture controls.

Sketches & Concept

Some of the concepts I came up were to have QR codes dotted around London and when players find them, they can scan them and virtually buy property. Another was small things like shaking your device would roll the dice and communicate with the other players simply without deterring away from playing.

You’ll also be able to take pictures and send them to your opponents to boast how far you are on the board. Players would start with virtual money, but what if you could use real life cash and scan it in to your game?

Urban Monopoly

When you open the game, you will be asked to enter the number of players and the postcode of where you are and away you go.

Players will start with £500 of virtual money and every time you pass go, you’ll be award with a bonus £200. The board you see is of my area, Brixton. As you’re playing you’ll be walking through these places and take in the history, lifestyle and culture of that area.

If you were to land on a chance, you’ll be prompted to spin the question mark to see your prize or penalty. For the community chest, you have to drag a key into the keyhole and flick open the lid to see what you have won.

Interface Video

To go with the board game, I created a first person video of where you would go in relation to the game. You’ll experience of the hustle and bustle of Brixton, taking in sights and the community while listening to music associated with the area.

If you want to you are able to deviate from the board game in order for you to delve deeper into certain areas of Brixton. Like for example the markets as it’s a very large you may want to see everything, maybe buy a few things and return back to the game.

The Website

I wanted my website simple and user friendly like my Urban Monopoly game. The menu is located on the right because if were to put them on the left, they wouldn’t of worked.

Learning how to hand type coding for my website was hard at first but began to get easier the more I explored into it.

Moving my thumbnails proved to be the most difficult part. This is because no matter what I did, they just did not more. Thankfully I managed to position them where I wanted by creating separate divs and classes for each image. Other than that everything seem to fit into place.
