National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards The Awards celebrate the highest quality of workmanship. They recognise the challenges that were overcome to deliver extraordinary projects of outstanding quality and value for clients. They reward the innovation, commitment to continuous improvement and employment of skilled tradespeople that allow National Winners to achieve such high standards. The finalists are winners of their Master Builders State and Territory Excellence in Building and Construction Awards and are now in the running for a prestigious National Award.

Showcasing the 2023 National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards recognises the best building projects from communities around the country and the builders that constructed them across the residential, commercial/industrial and civil/ infrastructure construction sectors.
BUILDING AUSTRALIA
The 2023 National Excellence in Building and Construction Award winners showcase outstanding buildings built by hard-working, highly skilled and dedicated people working in our industry. The attention to detail and the exemplary execution - in many instances with a high degree of difficulty - while ensuring excellence in coordination between clients, designers, consultants, and subcontractors are all reflected in this year's winners of our 51 award categories. Our awards provide us with the opportunity to identify the best of the best from around the country and reflect the diversity of our membership from residential renovations and new builds, construction of our schools, roads, aged care, high-rise residential and commercial buildings and our arts and tourism facilities. We are recognising builders and subcontractors who are setting the standard for our current and future generations. National judging to determine the winners from each state and territory awards is always challenging, reflected in some scoring outcomes of less than a point difference between winner and second place. So, we commend the work of all our finalists in this year's national awards program. Getting to the national awards is a significant achievement in itself. Our National Awards don't just recognise outstanding building and construction; they also provide us with the chance to reward those who are starting their careers through our National Apprentice of the Year Award and those who are part-way through their career journey through the National Young Builder of the Year Award. Our 2023 winners were selected through a two-stage process of assessment of written documentation from state and territory judging and then interviewing the top 3 in each category, providing a robust but complicated process to assist our judges. Again, there needed to be more to separate the top candidates. Australia's building and construction industry continues to strive for and achieve excellence despite any setbacks. This shows our industry's resilience and capacity to meet any future challenges.

V-Build Construction Services Mountainview QUEENSLAND The stunning home reflecting New Zealand mountain home combined with US ranch, was a difficult build from the very start. The entire footprint of the house was excavated to rock, roads were built to access the estate, new electrical mains and fibre optical cabling was installed, 3 home sewer treatment plants were built, and 500,000 litres of water storage was created. The home is on a suspended slab throughout, with the centrepiece 19th century style barn constructed from solid blackbutt with mortice and tenon fixings only. The staircases were built on site by boilermakers over 6 weeks. There are hand-pitched ceilings to both upper wings, as well as hand-pitched stonework to hundreds of square metres of walls along with custom made cabinetry in every room. From the whisky room, wine cellar, wine room, and commercially capable kitchen over four rooms, six fireplaces, and cinema, this is an entertainer's dream.

Join Constructions Shorebird House NEW SOUTH WALES The project includes two separate buildings, one containing residential and the other recreational spaces, including a fully underground full sized, full height basketball court, along with gardens and pool and spa. As an ocean beach fronted site, it has been built over a reclaimed sand mine with imported fill. The brief required a specific warm white concrete finish that was not commercially available, so a local batching plant was commissioned to supply the one-off specialty mix. The project was 3D modelled to enable highly detailed 3D plans to be produced from which every off-form wall form work was factory cut and assembled for installation on site. Over 200 separate wall pours were completed using this method.

Build a better future with timber

timber environmental
Timber provides economic, environmental and social benefits now and into the future. Economically, timber is a cost-effective option; environmentally, it helps tackle climate change by storing carbon absorbed from the atmosphere; and socially, the biophilic effects of exposed wood contribute to the wellbeing of a building’s occupants. Add workability, availability and familiarity, and it’s easy to see why timber is the naturally sustainable choice to build a better future. The project was an integration of salvaged and recycled materials with building craft. It is an exercise in learning and mentoring, and a milestone shared between an experienced builder, a final year apprentice, and a first year apprentice. The flexible design and collaborative construction process created opportunities for each team member to showcase their skills and building interests in the final product.

Burgio Construction WESTERN AUSTRALIA The builder was required to demolish an existing structure, and then add an extension including living, dining, kitchen, study and a laundry. Deakin AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY This renovation and extension lifted this home from the original 1950s cottage to a modern Spanish-styled home. The detailing of the beautiful curved steel framed doors shows masterful technical expertise, especially the frame fixing, operation of the doors and integration with the external mouldings. To shift loading points to suit the new layout, stumps were replaced in parts of the existing floor sub-structure and new structural members, batten, and sarking were installed in the existing roof. Existing windows were upgraded, and insulation was added where possible to match the remarkable standard of the new additions.

Build By Design Treehouse NEW SOUTH WALES The Treehouse project was a total refurbishment of a 1980s ‘pole’ house that contained 20 telegraph poles as the super structure, with each pole supported by custom steel reinforcement stirrups grouted into the exposed cliff face. The existing structure was in excess of 18 metres in elevation, split over four levels, providing a significant challenge. The entire house was stripped and transported by hand out to the street. The demolition phase revealed inadequate framing, structural connections and poor building practices. These were collaboratively problem-solved between the builder, architect, engineer and the client. The end result is a beautiful home with double glazing and internal voids to maximise the light, thermal comfort, and views.

DCB NEW SOUTH WALES The project required a total refurbishment of the existing house and the addition of garaging, verandahs, and an upper floor master ensuite. The high quality of the extensive range of features are obvious at every turn, none more so than the purpose-built steel framed flush fitting curved joinery door in the main entry area. A significant amount of complexity was required to raise openings, external doors, and window heads to an appropriate height for the scale of the house. Basement floors were lowered where necessary, while solving incumbent structural, water proofing, and drainage issues, to create high ceilings throughout.

Builden Construction The Beaufort WESTERN AUSTRALIA The Beaufort is a three-level entertainment venue, offering various experiences for patrons all in the one precinct. It has taken a 1950’s warehouse space and transformed it into a multi-tiered entertainment venue, that includes a modern Asian restaurant, hidden speakeasy, and main bar which spans over all levels. A large section of the existing buildings were retained, which formed part of the foundations for the restaurant and back of house areas. Raw finishes were utilised as much as possible, which is evident in the off-form concrete soffits, face brickwork, and painted columns.

Yangarra Estate Vineyards New Cellar Door and Bottle Store SOUTH AUSTRALIA Pascale has delivered an extraordinary addition to winery tourism and hospitality in South Australia. Flawlessly burnished concrete floors with polished brass insert set the challenge. Large ceramic tiles dress the walls to the entry stairs, which were scribed around treads and risers, and were fixed safely to an excellent standard. Complex internal finishes required by the client are without fault. The project was delivered in a biodynamic and organic certified environment with extremely well developed systems to manage quality, safety and environmental issues.

Lendlease Building Enex Façade WESTERN AUSTRALIA The project was required to build a replica of the Enex façade. The Enex Façade was originally constructed in 1890 and has been altered and rebuilt a number of times since that date. During routine maintenance in 2018, several significant cracks were identified, and on further inspection, structural decay and degradation was evident. It was recommended to demolish the façade with the replacement to be constructed “like for like” to preserve its heritage significance.

Devonport Waterfront Hotel TASMANIA This new hotel in Devonport is a large, complex project that accommodated multiple design changes and the impact of Covid-19 interruptions mid-construction but has nevertheless been delivered to a very high standard inside and out. Acknowledging the technical and construction challenges faced in its delivery on an exposed coastal site abutting Bass Strait, this is an outstanding project.

Hutchinson Builders MONA Jetty Tunnel TASMANIA Carving tunnels in the Berriedale foreshore at MONA seems a commonplace occurrence in recent years, but the technical challenges of doing so are not. Safety, accuracy and aesthetics all have a huge part to play in any successful tunnelling undertaking. Hutchinson Builders have demonstrated that they are adept at managing these requirements, and in doing so, to the exacting standards of the MONA team. The end result is both a functional and aesthetic triumph, making for an easier yet more dramatic arrival for those disembarking the MONA Roma ferry.

Women Building Australia aims to encourage women to enter the building and construction industry, sets the foundations for a successful career, provides support to achieve their goals, celebrates their success through telling their stories, and generates role models to motivate more women to enter the industry. Women represent half of the workforce; the industry is currently facing a shortage of skills, and this presents a great opportunity for women to fill that void. Old stereotypes are being broken down with women already filling key roles and creating great businesses in the building and construction industry.
