2019 YEAR IN REVIEW  MASTER BUILDERS AUSTRALIA

TOGETHER WE DELIVERED Together with Master Builders Associations around the country we accomplished so much for the 32,000 members of Master Builders and the building and construction industry in 2019. We passionately and effectively advocated for the people, businesses, policies and ideas that help our industry thrive, proving just how effective the Master Builders movement can be when we work together. From putting the issues that matter to our members and their business success front and centre at the 2019 Federal Election and taking leadership positions on the economy, industrial relations and building quality and regulation, we have delivered. We have continued to enhance our outreach to our political leaders by nurturing relationships across the Federal Parliament and bringing together our industry and political leaders. All that has been achieved was accomplished with the support of Master Builders Associations in each state and territory and their members. It is the success and power of this federation that makes possible a vocal and influential national voice for Master Builders 32,000 members and the residential, commercial and civil construction industry.

“We are proud to be on the front line fighting for our members’ interests. Together, we’re working to solve the building and construction industry’s political and policy problems every day.” Hedley Davis, National President, Master Builders Australia

TOGETHER WE STOOD UP FOR BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION THE FIGHTS WE LED What matters to Master Builders Australia is that we are successful in providing a strong, effective voice for our members, our industry in communities around the country. We make sure their concerns are heard by decision-makers and are considered in the most important debates.

“Master Builders is not a shy organisation. It’s an organisation that speaks its mind, an organisation that speaks clearly and stands up for what they believe in.” Hon. Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia

THE ‘TRADIE’ ELECTION – MASTER BUILDERS CAMPAIGNS AT THE FEDERAL ELECTION Master Builders did not bet on the result of the Federal Election. The decision to campaign reflected our determination to fight for our members’ interests based on policy, not politics and we were prepared to continue the battle regardless of the outcome. With the support of Master Builders around the country, we championed the policies necessary for their business success. We fought on two key issues that would have devastated our industry and the economy – keeping negative gearing and capital gains tax arrangements unchanged and preserving the Australian Building and Construction Commission to protect against the bullying of the CFMMEU and other construction unions. Our analysis of the numbers of small building businesses, the numbers of residential property investors and the jobs provided by our industry in every Federal Electorate showed a way for the issues that mattered most to our members to have a real impact on the election result.

BUILDING QUALITY & REGULATION Master Builders took a leading role in the building and construction industry’s call for state and territory governments to commit to the Australia-wide implementation of the Shergold Weir Building

Confidence Report to address the crisis in confidence engulfing the industry due to failures of state and territory enforcement of building regulation and resulting building quality issues. A front-page splash in The Australian kicked off a week-long campaign of national media interviews featuring CEO Denita Wawn that in the end saw agreement by state and territory governments to work with the Federal Government on the implementation of the Report’s key findings.

ENSURING INTEGRITY BILL Following the re-election of the Morrison Government, we lobbied for the Government to bring the Ensuring Integrity Bill back before the Parliament. We made submissions the Senate Committee inquiry, appeared before the committee’s public hearings to make our case, then when the crunch came we launched an advertising campaign calling on the Parliament to pass the laws.

“We are taking this step on behalf of our members, most of them small businesses, who are forced to confront illegal bullying, intimidation and coercion from construction unions every day in their workplaces.” Denita Wawn, CEO, Master Builders Australia.

THE STORIES WE TOLD STRONG BUILDING, STRONG ECONOMY In every city, town and region around Australia our members, 98 per cent of them small and medium businesses, are driving economic growth needed for stronger local economies and jobs in their local communities. Master Builders members are rusted on to economic growth because it means building activity and business success. We made sure that the message that a stronger building industry means a stronger economy was prominent in the media in and in the minds of politicians throughout the year.

“You’re about jobs and that’s what I’m about. You do things that create jobs and I thank you for that and for the jobs that you’ll create in the future.” Hon. Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister of Australia

THE LEADERS WE BROUGHT TOGETHER INDUSTRY ADVOCATES TAKE TO THE HILL Our industry is essential for a strong economy and higher living standards for all Australians. So it’s critical that Master Builders tells government, politicians and regulators that the policies they create and implement have a real impact on building and construction businesses, the people they employ and the local communities they serve and support. Master Builders National Leaders Summit brought together the industry’s leaders from around the country to meet with leaders of the Morrison Government. Throughout the year Master Builders Australia’s National Board, Policy Committees and CEO’s of state and territory Master Builders Associations met with Minsters, Shadow Ministers, cross-bench senators and other politicians about the issues that matter most to our industry.

TOGETHER WE STRENGTHENED THE INDUSTRY THE CONVERSATIONS WE LED RECOGNISING BUSINESS BEST PRACTICE The inaugural National Business Leadership Awards recognised excellence in best practice, improvement initiatives, innovation, industry leadership and corporate social responsibilities within their business. They aim to inspire all businesses in the building and construction industry, large and small, to make excellence in best practice the foundation of their mission and brand. Presented at a Gala Dinner in Melbourne, the Awards validated and celebrated the building and construction businesses that are leading the way in best practice and which have genuinely instilled this objective into their long-term business strategy.

“For us our reputation is everything. The clients we have invariably choose us based on our reputation and we understand that they have a lot of choice about who they use. So to be recognised for the work that we do as a business and how we present our business is incredibly valuable.” Steve Margetic, Managing Director, Sitzler

THE FUTURES WE SHAPED SUPPORTING WOMEN IN OUR INDUSTRY With women making up only 11% of our industry’s total workforce and only 1% of building trades, building and construction is mostly missing out on the skills and talents of the female population. Right now, the Master Builders Women Building Australia program is working to change that by promoting the huge range of career and business opportunities that our industry has to offer and supporting women starting out in the industry. Following the successful evaluation of its activities, Women Building Australia has received $675,000 from the Federal Government and is rolling out its program of career information and promotion and the National Mentoring program which supports talented young women from around the country and draws on the wisdom, skills and experience of accomplished leaders in our industry.

“I was blessed with having a fantastic mentor who was able to guide me through the goals that I’d set at the start of the program, particularly around tough decision making and conversations. I got a lot of value of out of the program and I’d highly recommend it to any female looking to develop her career further.” Kirsty Reaks, Project Manager, Downer EDI Works
