Leadership is an ability, not a title and with the proper training and experience, anyone can be a leader from any position within an organization. The acquisition and development of leadership skills is critical for those individuals who want to have lasting careers in commercial construction serving as high performing leaders within their organization. In review of the following four areas of the Master Builder Designation program, you will find that they all circle back to leadership…to implement Project Management, Ecological Construction, Safety, and Ethics into your company or projects, Leadership is key. Ecological Construction is not a new concept. Commercial construction has always had an impact on the environment. When you consider air, soil, and water, construction company employees should be aware of the daily impact to the general public as well as the long term environmental impact their work creates. Participation in ecological construction education and training demonstrates an individual’s concern for the environment, which makes them leaders in their industry.

E

Elective credits can be earned from any or all of these training and professional development categories. Excess credits in the above categories will automatically be calculated into the Elective category.

Project Management is the responsibility of a host of individuals on a commercial construction project. Whether you are a senior leader, project manager, supervisor, or craftworker, there are skills within the broad context of Project Management that play a critical role in determining your success and that of the project. Individuals who are able to acquire and develop these skills are often identified as high performing leaders. Safety is at the heart of any good builder and is a cornerstone of Master Builders of Iowa. To be considered a Master Builder, an individual should acquire and develop the skills necessary to work or manage a project at a high level regarding safety. In addition to the day-to-day safety behaviors, the Master Builder must stay in tune with the latest advancements in safety as well as understand the compliance issues when working with OSHA or other governing bodies. Ethics is what separates Master Builders from the rest. Without ethical principles guiding the commercial construction industry, we would not be where we are today. To ensure that ethical principles remain a key component of the industry, individuals should participate in ethics workshops and activities toward becoming a high performing leader.

You Hold the Key Presenter: Steve Siemens, Siemens People Builders - Des Moines, IA This session is designed to discuss what keys are needed for team success, building good relationships with customers, change, staying negativefree, being creative, and dynamic leadership. A special section will be devoted to helping each participant understand they are a vital key to the leadership of their company. Increase the ROI on Your Workforce Training Investment Through the Use of Virtual & Augmented Reality Technology Presenter: Kerry Smith, ChalkBites, Inc. - Davenport, IA We all recognize the best workforces drive results to the bottom line and we all recognize our assets require constant attention and investment to maximize the return. Training in Virtual Reality (VR) provides a transformational learning experience for employees at a lower cost than conventional solutions. These solutions do not require any travel or out of pocket costs and are more effective than conventional training. The immersion and engagement inherent in a spatial VR environment eliminate competing distractions that occur during live and online instruction and requires active user participation. Training in VR also introduces the element of kinesthetic learning not available in a typical classroom environment. These elements directly affect the retention of the information provided. A study by PwC found that VR learners were 4 times faster to train than classroom learners. During our session we will explore a variety of use cases and how to deploy this technology to your organization. Enhancing the Design and Construction Experience by Utilizing Extended Reality and Visualization Presenters: Matt Krenz & Garret Meierbachtol, Shive Hattery - Cedar Rapids, IA / Garret Munch, Shive Hattery - Des Moines, IA In this session, our team will share how Shive-Hattery evolved from drafting, to BIM, to using Extended Reality & Visualization to integrate the entire ecosystem of a project (from conceptual through construction documentation) in collaboration with construction to enhance project delivery. And, how these mediums play into the Digital Twin (bridge between the physical and digital world) present and future of AEC, enhancing the experience for each other and our clients. The Power of Your Own Professional Network Presenter: Danny Beyer, Iron Horse Wealth Management, LLC - Johnston, IA Iowa’s commercial construction industry is full of young professionals. There is no need to tag them with the generational labels like Gen 9/11, Gen Z, or millennials. They are young, they are professional and our industry needs their skills, knowledge and energy to thrive. In this fun and interactive session, we will show how easy it is to network no matter how comfortable, or uncomfortable, you are with it. Learn how to get through boring small talk and build relationships that will result in both professional and personal success and discover how easy it is to get out of bad conversations. Networking is easier than you think when you become conscious of the network you have and use simple strategies to get more from your connections. In addition, we will delve into personal branding, which is a powerful tool that allows you to set the stage before a job interview, set people’s perceptions before a sales call, or influence opinions of strangers. Social media can have a profound impact on how people perceive you both online and in person. Learn strategies to expand your influence and build a brand that will help you succeed. Current Labor and Human Resources Issues Presenters: Kim Blankenship & Nancy Wood, Bradley & Riley PC - Iowa City, IA This session will address some of the major human resources issues that, if handled appropriately, can help a construction firm flourish, but when poorly administered can lead to expensive and damaging consequences. Included in this presentation will be hiring, discipline and terminations, drug testing, National Labor Relations Board, preventing harassment, and much more.

PAGE 8

Cornerstone Academy Was It Your Fault? No, But I Still Want You to Pay For It Presenters: Aaron Collins & Mike Summers, TrueNorth Construction Specialty Group – Cedar Rapids, IA Now more than ever, the challenges facing contractors extend far beyond the job site. For those wanting to remain competitive in the industry, they’re required to have the expertise, processes, and systems to effectively mitigate many types of risk. Project Management and Finances Presenter: Sarah Zimmerman, BerganKDV – Cedar Rapids, IA Seamless flow of information from finance to the field and vice versa is critical to successful management of individual projects and entire companies. To maximize profits and cash flow, project managers and finance teams must be able to collect, communicate, and transfer information efficiently and accurately. This session will uncover ways to manage projects and cash flow effectively and improve your company’s bottom line. Who’s Actually Working for Your Subs? The Dangers of SubSubcontracting and More Presenter: Justin Sullivan, Whitfield & Eddy Law - Des Moines, IA As labor markets have become more and more strained, contractors in commercial construction have begun to facilitate “crew” based labor forces. This concept can, and often does create additional risks for both the general contractor and the subcontractor. This informative session will address operational risks including safety and accidents, quality assurance, productivity, labor and supply chains; contract and legal risks concerning indemnity, payment conditions, site conditions, disputes and more. Lean in Design and Construction Presenter: Joshua Thrap, Hy-Vee Construction, LC - West Des Moines, IA In this session, we will walk through the current state of the construction industry. Productivity has been declining in the United States for the last 50 years. In addition, construction operations are 43% value added versus 88% in manufacturing. The delivery model for construction must change now more than ever. Through simulations and discussions, this session will dive into why the industry needs to change and valuable tools available to make these changes. Feedback That Works Presenter: Dr. Jim Summers, Iowa State University - Ames, IA Timely and accurate feedback is a core principle for leaders to facilitate employee growth, job performance, and effective teamwork. This session is designed to introduce a basic process for giving feedback and to provide multiple opportunities to practice that process, so that you begin to develop good habits. Also, you will learn common misconceptions regarding feedback while introducing the fundamentals of giving feedback and coaching. The fundamentals may seem simple and elementary in theory, but they are far from simple to execute. When we go to do them, we too often revert to our reflexes. So, this session is about practice, practice, practice.

Annual Supervisor Drug Training - Keeping Your Workplace Drug-Free Presenters: Marc Griggs & Dwight Taylor, The DART Group, LLC - Johnston, IA This session will provide attendees with information regarding illegal drug categories, paraphernalia, workplace statistics, and how to recognize signs and symptoms of someone under the influence of drugs. In addition, participants will learn how to determine drug impairment from a medical condition, how to document observations and how “reasonable suspicion” and the Iowa drug laws affect employers. Workplace Violence – Preparation Saves Lives! Presenter: Mark Bowersox, The DART Group, LLC - Johnston, IA This session will provide attendees with valuable information regarding workplace violence. Topics covered will include recognition of potentially violent individuals and information on how to effectively communicate and safely interact with individuals during stressful situations. Active shooter situations will be discussed including what to do in the event the unthinkable happens. Eliminating Stress Around Financial Matters for a More Productive Workforce Presenters: Andrew Himelson & Steve Utsler, Principal - West Des Moines, IA We all know financial planning can be confusing, stressful, and even a bit boring. But when you focus on the kind of life you want—the goals, needs, and dreams you have for yourself and your family—your decisions about money get a lot easier. This informative session will help you explore the financial topics that matter to your life like simple or revocable trusts, life or disability insurance, 401(k) plans, saving for college, and much more. Developing Your Digital Marketing Blueprint Presenter: Jaclyn Overton, Jaclyn Overton Consulting - Van Meter, IA As consumers, we are exposed to hundreds (and some say even thousands) of marketing messages each day. Figuring out how to convey the right message at the right time to the right person through targeted marketing activities can feel like an impossible task, but it doesn’t have to! In this session, we’ll cover how to approach company marketing efforts and share best practices especially as it relates to your online presence and digital marketing activities. You’ll leave the session with an actionable blueprint and simple strategies you can implement to help promote your company, generate leads, educate potential clients and build loyalty. Who is CSSI? Presenter: Joe Melton, Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. - Des Moines, IA In this session, we will discuss the services, products and experiences that Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. (CSSI) and their staff bring to the table in support of your organization’s safety efforts. We will explore in-depth the experiences and outcomes that can be achieved as a result of the services and products provided by MBI’s preferred safety provider.

Focus on the Ts Presenter: Steve Siemens, Siemens People Builders - Des Moines, IA The workplace that is effective focuses on the three “Ts”. “T” One: Teammate Excellence. “T” Two: Time Management. “T” Three: Transform Yourself. How to transform yourself into excellence and being distinct. Learn creative ways to move yourself in a positive direction. Job Site Safety Management: From Start to Finish Presenter: Chuck Martinek, Assured Partners - West Des Moines, IA Quality safety programs go beyond weekly tool box meetings and checklist inspections. Contractors with successful safety programs implement safety directives into every phase of a project. During this session, attendees will learn the key elements of establishing effective safety management practices from pre-planning through completion of the project. You Okay? Addressing Mental Health Topics in the Workplace Presenter: Diane Rohlman, University of Iowa - Iowa City, IA Suicide rates in the construction industry are the second highest among all occupations, and four times higher than in the general population. This industry is high stress with demanding schedules, seasonal work, layoffs, long hours, frequent travel, and has high rates of alcohol and drug use sometimes due to injuries and chronic pain. This program will help attendees recognize signs of suicidal behavior, what to say (and not to say), and application of workplace policies toward mental health. Time Management in the Fast-Paced World of Commercial Construction Presenter: Matt Bruinekool, Drake University - Des Moines, IA This session will focus on time management strategies to assist participants in becoming more effective and reduce the stress associated with the volume of work they are experiencing today. Participants will leave with the knowledge and ability to implement techniques that make the most sense to them and the way they engage in work. Cybersecurity - Protect Yourself and Your Company Presenters: Seth Johnson, RSM US LLP - Des Moines, IA & Adam Lurie, RSM US LLP - Minneapolis, MN With today’s advanced threats and rapidly evolving malware, paired with an increasingly virtual workforce, your company faces data security risk exposures from internal and external sources every day. This session will address and provide demonstrations on the common ways companies are attacked, and how you can protect yourself and your company from becoming a victim.

AN INTERACTIVE AND UNIQUE APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP TRAINING Master Builders of Iowa will once again deliver an unprecedented leadership development series for a select group of construction professionals who “get” leadership. David Rabiner of Rabiner Resources (Portland, OR) will lead this workshop series, now in its tenth year. These workshops are not offered individually, but as an integrated series on the topics of communication, customer, collaboration and culture. Participants can come from any area of construction, including marketing; pre-construction; estimating; project management; field production; equipment and fleet management; accounting and finance; human resources; safety; and upper management. We are seeking those individuals who are defining their leading edge as a construction leader. The series is organized into four interactive learning sessions. Each experience will include pre-session assignments, lessons by David, team exercises and networking time with one another. Complementing The Leadership Experience sessions, David Rabiner is offering, at NO additional cost, private leadership coaching in a confidential setting. Becoming a great construction leader does not boil down to what you know technically, nor is it about who you know. It is about you, your character; your ability to lead yourself and others; your influence in good times and bad; and your individual career journey. Come be part of this experience in a closed setting with others who share your challenges and opportunities!

Core Leadership Concepts: What Every Construction Professional Needs to Know Now

Collaboration: How to Lead a High-Performing Construction Team

This opening session begins by laying out what successful construction leadership looks like today. We look at current issues such as generational differences, technology advances, and labor market shortages that impact the construction industry today and we identify the qualities we expect to see in a leader. We assess your leadership strengths and you learn the process of turning desired leadership qualities into personal attributes. The program then introduces the key leadership skill of effective communication, which we continue in the second session. You learn how to build rapport quickly, plan and executive important conversations, and avoid communication mistakes. Since artful communication shows up in every aspect of leadership and drives collaboration, a peakperformance culture, and outstanding customer service, we will reference the lessons learned in this opening session and discover how to apply them in different professional settings throughout the remainder of the series.

Success in the construction industry requires skillful collaboration with project team members, owners, partners, subs, and vendors. It demands that things get done together, as planned, in sequence, on time, and with a common dedication to excellence. Bringing all the moving parts together in the most effective, seamless way possible is a construction leader’s responsibility, requiring all the prerequisites of skillful collaboration: excellent communication, information sharing, decision-making, group facilitation, and team building skills. In this session, we focus on tools, techniques, and leadership qualities that sharpen your ability to collaborate effectively. We look at ways to work successfully with others regardless of personality differences; drill down on the most important qualities of people who collaborate skillfully; assess your current strengths and weaknesses; and learn a group facilitation tool that also sharpens your communication, critical thinking, and team building skills.

Leadership Communications & Customer Satisfaction

Creating Culture and Company Vision

Essential to business success is customer satisfaction. The complexity of construction projects – designing, contracting, permitting, organizing, documenting, sequencing work, inspecting, paying, and more – means you have far more opportunities (than most businesses) for things to go wrong that will upset customers. How can your company maximize customer satisfaction and set itself apart from your competitors? In this session, we build on the communication skills learned in session one and explore new tools that help build leadership presence, solve problems, and build goodwill with both employees and customers.

Culture is the personality of an organization. Culture is how things are done. When there is a fit between company culture and business goals and strategies, companies succeed. Beyond the success of a company, culture is key to attracting and keeping good employees. Job seekers want to work in companies where they feel like they fit in. When the fit is right, employees are engaged, motivated, and loyal. In this program, we move ‘culture’ from an abstract concept to a tangible set of “how-to’s.” We explore the building blocks of culture, drill down on the specifics in your organizational culture, and identify tools and strategies for shaping and maintaining the culture you want. We will conclude The Leadership Experience with a powerful and memorable vision exercise.

THE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE WAS EXTREMELY VALUABLE AND USEFUL IN MY CAREER. I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST THIS PROGRAM TO ANYONE WHO IS LOOKING TO IMPROVE THEIR LIFE, CAREER, OR SIMPLY WANTS TO BE A BETTER PERSON. Ben Lortz, Koester Construction Company Inc.

Presenters: Alan Feirer, Group Dynamic - Winterset, IA; Henry Norman, Graham Construction Co., - Des Moines, IA

In this high energy and interactive session, we will apply the servant leadership model to the practical world of commercial construction. We will address what a leader is and does, as well as the responsibilities and expectations of designated leaders. In addition, we will delve a bit into project management and what it takes to be a successful leader when working with industry partners such as owners, sub-contractors, and vendors. Also, we’ll explore common obstacles of transitioning from crew member to crew leader, and how the use of different types of power can affect leadership influence. We’ll discuss the dynamics of professional conduct expected when these roles change, including how to motivate people, set expectations, and meet expectations. What leaders say and do on and off the job site also impacts the productivity and results of the team.

Communication is the one skill we use every day, in every environment, and in every situation. Yet, we’ve all experienced the fallouts of bad communication or the lack of communication. In this session, we will identify three common obstacles to effective communication. Once we are aware of them, we can take constructive steps to overcome them. These obstacles are: maturity in the moment; personality styles and trait differences; and the tendency to be vague and make attitude assumptions. We will also discuss communication differences within generations. Next, we will explore written, electronic, verbal, and nonverbal communication in the commercial construction industry. Finally, the single, most important component to good communication is active listening. We will discuss and practice active listening skills as a part of effective leadership.

Session 2 – Risk Management

Session 4 – Personal Effectiveness

Presenters: Mike Doucette, Russell Construction Co., Inc.; Henry Norman, Graham Construction., - Des Moines, IA

Presenters: Alan Feirer, Group Dynamic - Winterset, IA Henry Norman, Graham Construction Co., - Des Moines, IA

The Evolution of Safety

In this session, we will address critical individual skills to becoming a great leader in the ever-changing commercial construction environment. We will explore goal-setting and how to best set, track, and reach your goals, as well as prioritize the multitude of tasks and meetings that take place on projects. Next, we will focus on one of the biggest hurdles to individual productivity by teaching attendees how to identify and reduce wasted time in their schedules by controlling the amount of time spent on specific activities. Finally, we will address work/life balance and help attendees better understand how to prioritize between home and career, while being at their best in each environment. While we will be exploring these topics from an individual approach, these are all skills that can be applied in a group setting to make your construction team more successful in the field.

This session will review how and why safety became so important. We will discuss some basic safety & risk management principles and how they evolved over the years. Topics will include some historical catastrophic accidents and their impact on safety, direct and indirect accident costs, different types of insurance coverages, the development of workers’ compensation, the experience modification rating (EMR), and the development of OSHA and their inspection procedures. Dazed & Confused – Why Do We Do the Things We Do? You’ve trained your employees over and over again not to do things, so why did they do it? Are you often amazed by the unsafe behaviors we exhibit time and again? This session will review aspects of behavior safety and explain how to stop the cycle of risky behavior and improve your safety performance. Topics include an introduction to safety awareness, types of at-risk behaviors, the 4 critical mind states, human error, and error reduction techniques.

PRESENTERS

Truth or Dare? – The TRUTH about Safety Management and DARE to be Excellent This presentation exposes and explores the many long-standing, unquestioned ‘myth-conceptions’ concerning traditional safety which impedes organizations from attaining safety excellence. Don’t get stuck investing precious time and money into programs and procedures that have minimal impact on safety performance just to see the same problems resurface again. Instead, focus on sound management principles that have been used for decades to create and sustain business success and learn how to apply them towards safety management.

Foundations of a Safety Leader This interactive session will teach attendees about the costs of ineffective leadership and the benefits of effective leadership. Most importantly, it teaches 5 critical leadership skills they can use on the job site to more effectively communicate and work with their crew members and how doing so leads to a stronger job site safety climate.

THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO SHOW PROMISE AS FIELD LEADERS, OR ARE CURRENTLY IN LEADERSHIP ROLES.

Project Managers and Project Supervisors – A High Performing Leadership Series Success of a construction team, project or company often boils down to a few key components that, if carefully combined, can lead to great accomplishments where everybody wins. Employees, companies and customers can all win with the proper combination of teamwork, leadership, communication, accountability, personal responsibility, budgeting and quality control on every project. A large portion of the responsibility for these areas falls on the project’s leadership team of project managers and project supervisors. This integrative leadership program will challenge members of the project team to understand project budgets, elevate individual and team performance, understand customer dynamics, and even have a little bit of fun in the process. This is an outstanding opportunity to put members of your project team in a teamwork atmosphere of learning and professional growth.

Achieving Maximum Job Profit Presenter: Ethan Cowles, FMI Corporation - Denver, CO This session will address field management opportunities and obstacles, explore the impact productivity changes have on a company’s financial performance, and habits of high-performing and effective field managers. In addition, this session will feature a workshop where attendees will compare their management skills to those of high performing leaders. Attendees will develop their personal action plan to improve job profits and utilize the session ideas to create a practical implementation plan. Each participant will identify specific improvements they can make within their own areas of responsibility. A discussion of the best approaches and techniques will help reinforce the summary of the key elements of the program. Each individual will come away with a focus on upgrading the skills that will provide the most beneficial impact.

Building and Implementing a Plan to Improve Productivity and Operational Excellence Presenter: Ethan Cowles, FMI Corporation - Denver, CO Most companies have hundreds or even thousands of years of collective experience within their company. The “best way” to do something has, likely, already been figured out. So why is it so hard to do the things we know make a difference every time, on every project? This session will explore what it takes to successfully implement change, internal best practices and process improvement. Topics will include prioritizing high impact initiatives, the role of leadership to drive operational excellence, obstacles to effective implementation, and proven practices for achieving long term success.

Taking Safety from the Office to the Job Site: What to Say & Do to Demonstrate Commitment Presenter: Todd Efird, Caterpillar Safety Services – Fayetteville, AR Every person in a construction organization has a specific function to get the job done, and yet all are held “responsible for safety.” Project managers and project supervisors have a particularly wide scope of influence and accountability, so it is critical that they demonstrate commitment through both words and actions. It starts with leading by example, but true leadership goes beyond wearing proper PPE and ensuring others do the same. This interactive session focuses on tactical activities to create and sustain a culture of positive safety performance through leadership, communication, training and recognition. Safety doesn’t just happen – it is built through trust, consistency and accountability. Participants will learn how to integrate these principles into their daily routines.

THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL TRADES TO SEND PROJECT MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS FROM YOUR COMPANY TO LEARN IN A TEAMWORK SETTING!

Innovative Planning and Scheduling to Meet Project Demands Presenter: Larry Cormicle, Cormicle Consulting Services, L.L.C. - Ames, IA Ever-increasing demands on shorter project schedules from clients require construction professionals at all levels to better understand and use advanced planning and scheduling skills and tools. Whether as a general contractor, construction manager or subcontractor, leaders of construction projects need more sophisticated skills to more efficiently plan and schedule their projects. This half day session will include “hands-on” exercises to increase your planning and scheduling skills. Efficient planning begins with a better understanding of how each trade’s work flow impacts every trade’s success. Participate in team exercises to learn the impact of uneven work flow. Participants will work in teams to build a small project on paper using newly learned skills. Teams will “pull plan” and then “sell” their plan to build the project. Includes an introduction to The Last Planner System and Lean scheduling practices. Learn about the latest trends and applications in “Planning and Scheduling,” and “4D Scheduling”.

Instead of Conflict Resolution, Resolve to Make Conflict Productive Presenter: Alan Feirer, Group Dynamic - Winterset, IA Conflict doesn’t need to be destructive to workplace performance or relationships. Teams who engage in productive conflict rely heavily on trust, and are better able to voice their opinions and concerns without fear, anxiety, or stress. Employees who participate in productive conflict are more likely to commit to change, hold themselves and others accountable to the goals of the team and company, and get results. This session will help learners effectively respond to the uncomfortable and inevitable challenges of workplace conflict. This program is designed to help curb destructive behaviors so that conflict can become productive, improving workplace relationships and business results.

BUILDING FUTURE LEADERSHIP MB EYE on the Future offers attendees a tremendous opportunity to continue their path of success and become more involved as current and future leaders of the construction industry in Iowa. It introduces participants to MBI, while focusing on communication, stepping outside of your comfort zone, and developing a personal leadership plan. A main component of the MB EYE on the Future program is ‘The Leaders Course’® presented by Ken Bradford. Ken works with the class the first five months of the program to boost confidence, communication and leadership skills, as well as lead each participant to become a more effective and charismatic leader. Ken’s sessions are not about taking notes, listening to lectures or watching lengthy slide presentations. Ken focuses on learning by doing, by participating, taking risks and applying the materials he teaches on a daily basis. The second component of the program is ‘Personal Leadership Plan Development’ presented by Matt Bruinekool. Each participant of MB EYE on the Future is nominated by someone because they believe they have the potential to be a future leader in the construction industry. Matt helps participants develop a customized plan to become the leader they want to be. Each participant will leave the program with a comprehensive plan for leadership development that will aid in achieving personal and professional goals. The final component of the MB EYE on the Future program focuses on Team Dynamics and will be led by Dan Shows with Shows Coaching. Through two separate four-hour sessions, Dan will focus on the fact that every team has dynamics as all teams are made up of individuals. Dan will run the group through a series of exercises to help define and explain team dynamics, form the foundations of a T.E.A.M, recognize their own individual personal dynamic as well as that of others. In addition, Dan will explain how to address positive and negative tension, strategies to use members’ strengths to build highly collaborative teams, and how to build a strategic plan to help the team win and keep winning. This entire program will be preceded by and centered around the Maxwell Impact DISC Indicator.

E g IL V rnin nt I a e B M e Le pm ln in velo O De & MBI LIVE November 16, 2021 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm While the construction industry has notably been the slowest to adapt to preconstruction technology, there has finally been an awakening! Shortly before the pandemic there was already a significant increase of investment in preconstruction technology from construction companies. The pandemic, however, provided a catalyst forcing many companies that were on the edge, to dive in. Working mobile had to happen. Streamlining collaboration, document control, takeoff and estimating had to happen. Regardless of past, comfortable processes, siloed team members had to break out of their comfort zones and get the numbers together before bid day. Many jumped into using and adapting to new software and apps as they had no choice. The majority of those are reaping the benefits already for their decisions. In this session we will look at the benefits of the digital preconstruction world and explore the paths already taken to enhance your processes and ways to improve these going forward. New program rollouts can be a daunting task, but with proper planning, implementation does not have to be so painful, or expensive. For those companies or individuals that have been on board with preconstruction tech prior to the current surge, your experience and testimonies are crucial to your industry. There will be ample time for questions and answers and sharing! Learning Objectives: • Discover the benefits of digital information in preconstruction. • Explore paths that will improve your current pre-con efforts. • Learn strategies for the successful implementation of new programs.

Lean 5S, commonly referred to as workplace organization, is a foundational element in the Toyota Production System and a common starting point for Lean adoption. During this interactive session, attendees will learn what each of the five S’s mean and how to systematically apply each, oneby-one. We will explain how to apply in the field, warehouse, and fab shop. The instruction will include plenty of relevant photos, testimonials, and tools – allowing you to be ready to experiment immediately. We’ll explore how to use 5S as part of visual controls (a.k.a. visual workplace, visual factory). The instruction will include simulations to show attendees first-hand how powerful 5S is. Most importantly, attendees will see how 5S leads to a safer workplace. In fact, some companies use 6S, where the sixth S is for safety. While our industry has made great progress to improve safety, there are few programs that manage to improve safety while also dramatically improving the flow, quality and speed of work…5S does it all! Learning Objectives • See how 5S helps work to flow by having materials “close to the point of use”, eliminating stock outages, and freeing time for the foreman/superintendent to mentor, plan, and lead. • Learn how to use 5S to develop junior staff skills in field leadership, innovation, and accountability. • Use 5S to help bridge the gap between field and office. • Understand how 5S can be an integral part of your Safety Program.

E g IL V rnin nt I a e B M e Le pm ln in velo O De & MBI LIVE September 13, 2022 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Tired of decisions being delayed, revisited, or overturned by stakeholders? The traditional method for making decisions in most design and construction projects is top-down, opaque, and based on authority. Few decision-makers have proper training in making sound decisions and results are often delayed or reversed, wasting time and resources. In every building project, the number one complaint of designers and contractors is about owners not making decisions fast enough, or being clear regarding the project’s direction. Choosing By Advantages (CBA) is a proven, sound decisionmaking method that supports multiple stakeholders as they consider numerous factors and perspectives while choosing among multiple alternatives. CBA is the Lean method for facilitating the conversations that produce the decisions that guide the right actions and outcomes. CBA aligns closely with other Lean methods (especially Set-Based Design and Target Value Delivery) and allows Lean teams to confidently present their findings and explain their thought-process to any stakeholder group. In this session, you will not only discover how to use CBA methods to make complex decisions that stick, we will also explore how to organize project teams and stakeholders from the beginning to understand how decisions get made and to guide teams in making those decisions at the right time. Learn how to ask the right questions and help your stakeholders organize for success. Learning Objectives: • Proactively determine who all of your stakeholders are, what they value, how they make decisions, and how to communicate. • Learn how to combine A3 Thinking, Set-Based Design, and CBA. • Learn how to set up a CBA exercise. • Understand the basic steps to completing a CBA exercise and what conversations are most important to facilitate a resolution. • Understand how costs are handled in a CBA exercise.

AVOID NEGATIVE IMPACTS... SAFETY ON WALKWAYS, STAIRS AND LADDERS

August 9, 2022 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Presenters: Andrew Bennett and Zack Valigosky SystemWorks, LLC - West Des Moines, IA

May 10, 2022 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Presenter: Mark Wieland Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. – Des Moines, IA

We’ve all heard of buildings that did not operate as expected or required. The increasing sophistication and complexity of building systems makes it difficult to be a master of all trades. Was the problem with the controls, mechanical, lighting, building envelope, or a combination of all? Commissioning benefits all project stakeholders including the general contractor and their subcontractors. Chilled beams, chilled sails, variable refrigerant flow, dual wheel energy recovery units, displacement ventilation, and dedicated outside air units are examples of new technologies being incorporated in the design of today’s buildings. The building automation system to maintain comfort levels with these technologies is also becoming more complex, and requires proper testing to ensure a fully functional building prior to owner turnover.

Are you up to date on the most recent changes required to safely walk around your job site or access the next level? During this informative webinar we will discuss the OSHA requirements for work surfaces, stairs and ladders to include the new technology available and the common issues that injure employees each day while getting in and out of job trailers, various places on the job site and other scenarios when working below 6’.

Master Builder Designation: Safety - 2 Credits Confined Space Rescue - 2 Hour Course Working inside of a confined space exposes employees to many risks, including toxic substances, electrocutions, explosions, and asphyxiation. When a worker is overcome by one of these hazards, their chance of survival may hinge on the level of planning and training that has been done prior to entering the space. In this interactive and hands-on course, you will learn the different options for confined space rescue and how to best prepare for a rescue prior to an employee entering the space. Master Builder Designation: Safety - 2 Credits Distracted Driving is Never Worth It! - 1 Hour Course We hear about distracted driving accidents almost every day, but driving distracted is no accident. Instead, it’s a choice people make when they get behind the wheel. It’s time to change our way of thinking. In this presentation, we’ll discuss the epidemic of distracted driving, focusing particularly on issues in the commercial industry. We’ll also offer suggestions on how employers can create, adopt, and enforce a cell phone safety policy. Master Builder Designation: Safety - 1 Credit Emergency Planning - 1 Hour Course Do you have a plan for the unexpected? Have you determined what to do if there was a disaster, unexpected storm, a public demonstration, an active shooter on or near your work site? Not having a plan can lead to chaos, workers not knowing where they should go, and informing those people who just briefly came onto the work site. If you do not have a proper plan you could be sending these people directly into the path of an emergency. This course we will discuss emergency preparation including Emergency Action Plans and learn how to prepare and react before, during, and after an emergency event or disaster. Individual Personnel Respirator Fit Testing - 1 or 2 Hour Course (Depending on Class Size) Due to recent changes in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), OSHA is now enforcing additional items aimed towards employee protection. Some of the items we’ve seen recently in the news involve heavy emphasis on medical surveillance, as well as testing to ensure work site conditions are adequate for employees. When referencing things like silica, dust, asbestos, and gases/fumes, sometimes the most logical step for an employer to protect their people is to provide personal protective equipment in the form of respirators. If this sounds like your company, do you know everything that is involved with requiring your employees to wear respirators on your job sites? Not only are companies now required to have a doctor’s approval for their employees to wear respirators, they have to have documentation that a qualified 3rd party has “fit tested” the actual respirator selected to that individual employee. We will be training employees on hazards in their workplace, how to properly clean/maintain/store their respirators, when to change their filters/cartridges, and finish the class by performing a quantitative fit-test on the employees in attendance. Class length can vary depending on the number of participants, and employers are required to have respirators selected and provided prior to holding this class. Master Builder Designation: Ecological - 1 or 2 Credits (Depending on Class Size) Infection Control - 1 Hour Course Prior to, during, and following the COVID-19 pandemic, renovation and construction projects in healthcare environments pose unique infection control and life safety challenges for contractors and workers.
