8:00 am – 12:00 pm Innovative Planning and Scheduling to Meet Project Demands

Instead of Conflict Resolution, Resolve to Make Conflict Productive

Presenter: Alan Feirer, Group Dynamic - Des Moines, IA

Conflict doesn’t need to be destructive to workplace performance or relationships. Teams who engage in productive conflict rely heavily on trust, and are better able to voice their opinions and concerns without fear, anxiety, or stress. Employees who participate in productive conflict are more likely to commit to change, hold themselves and others accountable to the goals of the team and company, and get results. This session will help participants effectively respond to the uncomfortable and inevitable challenges of workplace conflict. This program is designed to help curb destructive behaviors so that conflict can become productive, improving workplace relationships and business results.

Bridging the Gap on the Journey of Safety Excellence

Presenter: Joe Melton, Construction Safety Specialists, Inc. – West Des Moines, IA

In this session we build our foundations in safety through clear and concise conversations, strategies, and execution. We will establish strategies and tasks that can be taken back to the jobsite to enhance the overall performance. One of these tools will be the new MBI industry best practice JHA. The final component will be the efficient and accurate execution of the leading indicator task in safety, accountability and measurement. Learning objectives include safety foundations, conversational safety, and leading indicator matrix development.

Innovative Planning and Scheduling to Meet Project Demands

Presenter: Larry Cormicle, Cormicle Consulting Services, LLC - Ames, IA

Ever increasing demands on shorter project schedules from clients require construction professionals at all levels to better understand and use advanced planning and scheduling skills and tools. Whether as a general contractor, construction manager or subcontractor, leaders of construction projects need more sophisticated skills to more efficiently plan and schedule their projects. This half day session will include “hands-on” exercises to increase your planning and scheduling skills. Efficient planning begins with a better understanding of how each trade’s work flow impacts every trade’s success. Participate in team exercises to learn the impact of uneven work flow. Participants will work in teams to build a small project on paper using newly learned skills. Teams will “pull plan” and then “sell” their plan to build the project. Includes an introduction to The Last Planner System and Lean scheduling practices. Learn about the latest trends and applications in “Planning and Scheduling.”

Achieving Maximum Job Profit

Presenter: Ethan Cowles, FMI Corporation - Denver, CO

This session will address field management opportunities and obstacles, explore the impact productivity changes have on a company’s financial performance, and habits of high performing and effective field managers. In addition, this session will feature a workshop where attendees will compare their management skills to those of high performing leaders. Attendees will develop their personal action plan to improve job profits and utilize the session ideas to create a practical implementation plan. Each participant will identify specific improvements they can make within their own areas of responsibility. A discussion of the best approaches and techniques will help reinforce the summary of the key elements of the program. Each individual will come away with a focus on upgrading the skills that will provide the most beneficial impact.

Building and Implementing a Plan to Improve Productivity and Operational Excellence

Presenter: Ethan Cowles,

Most companies have hundreds or even thousands of years of collective experience within their company. The “best way” to do something has, likely, already been figured out. So why is it so hard to do the things we know make a difference every time, every project? This session will explore what it takes to successfully implement change, internal best practices and process improvement. Topics will include prioritizing high impact initiatives, the role of leadership to drive operational excellence, obstacles to effective implementation, and proven practices for achieving long term success.
