LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Core Leadership Concepts: What Every Construction Professional Needs to Know Now
This opening session begins by laying out what successful construction leadership looks like today. We look at current issues such as generational differences, technology advances, and labor market shortages that impact the construction industry today and we identify the qualities we expect to see in a leader. We assess your leadership strengths and you learn the process for turning desired leadership qualities into personal attributes. The program then introduces the key leadership skill of effective communication, which we continue in the second session. You learn how to build rapport quickly, plan and execute important conversations, and avoid communication mistakes. Since artful communication shows up in every aspect of leadership and drives collaboration, a peak-performance culture, and outstanding customer service, we come back throughout The Leadership Experience to the lessons learned in this opening session and discover how to apply them in different professional settings.
Session Objectives:
• The relationship between leadership and your company’s critical need to attract and retain the highest quality people
• The qualities of successful leaders today and how you see yourself in comparison
• The vision you have for yourself as a leader and where you’ll need to grow to get there
• The obstacles to personal leadership development
• A three-step process for turning a desired quality leadership into a personal attribute
• An understanding of leadership balance and how it fits into all aspects of communication and presence
• The single-most important communication tool necessary to build rapport, influence, motivate, and inspire
Leadership Communications and Customer Satisfaction
Essential to business success is customer satisfaction. The complexity of construction projects – designing, contracting, permitting, organizing, documenting, sequencing work, inspecting, paying, and more – means you have far more opportunities than most businesses for things to go wrong that will upset customers. Knowing that something on a project will not go according to plan, how can your company maximize customer satisfaction and set itself apart from your competitors? In this session, we build on the communication skills learned in session one and explore new tools that help build leadership presence, solve problems, and build goodwill with both employees and customers.
Session Objectives:
• The exceptional leader’s most important communication skill
• How to actively manage your customer’s expectations so you can exceed them
• How to manage yourself so that when things go wrong, your response improves the situation, rather than making the problem worse
• Negotiating so that both you and your customer feel satisfied with the deal
• Dealing with difficult customers
Collaboration: How to Lead a High-Performing
Construction Team
Success in the construction industry requires skillful collaboration with project team members, owners, partners, subs, and vendors. It demands that things get done together, as planned, in sequence, on time, and with a common dedication to excellence. Bringing all the moving parts together in the most effective, seamless way possible is the construction leader’s responsibility, requiring all the prerequisites of skillful collaboration: excellent communication, information sharing, decision-making, group facilitation, and team building skills. In this session, we focus on tools, techniques, and leadership qualities that sharpen your ability to collaborate effectively. We look at ways to work successfully with others regardless of personality differences; drill down on the most important qualities of people who collaborate skillfully; assess your current strengths and weaknesses; and learn a group facilitation tool that also sharpens your communication, critical thinking, and team building skills.
Session Objectives:
• How to work successfully with different types of people
• A self-assessment of collaborative skills
• A time-saving problem-solving process that considers all aspects of a problem, gets people in agreement on the best outcome, and identifies steps needed to move forward
• How to diagnose and address trust issues that get in the way of successful collaboration

Culture is the personality of an organization. Culture is how things are done. When there is a fit between company culture and business goals and strategies, companies succeed. Beyond the success of a company, culture is key to attracting and keeping good employees. Job seekers want to work in companies where they feel like they fit in. When the fit is right, employees are engaged, motivated, and loyal. In this program, we move ‘culture’ from an abstract concept to a tangible set of “how-to’s.” We explore the building blocks of culture, drill down on the specifics in your organizational culture, and identify tools and strategies for shaping and maintaining the culture you want. We will conclude The Leadership Experience with a powerful and memorable vision exercise.
Session Objectives:
• The three components of culture - vision, strategies, and values - and an assessment tool to help identify the areas in your company that need strengthening
• Understanding how vision, core values, and big goals contribute to the financial success and longevity of businesses, and how to become a visionary leader
• A step-by-step process for setting goals
• What it takes to build culture over time
