Editor’s Note Lisa Hilton Editor Welcome to the September/October edition of the Master Plumber Magazine! The Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards… what a night! Watching the awards program grow and develop each year is such a delight to see. So many more people are getting involved, learning to appreciate quality individuals and work when they see it, and making a difference to how this industry is shown appreciation. All the faces you see in the winners photo on our front cover are exceptional people who work in some of the most innovative and progressive businesses of our industry. They should all be immensely proud of their achievements. If you were there on the night, you would have felt the electric atmosphere in that room. Thank you for choosing to be there and being a part of something great. And if you made it to the After Party, I hope you danced as much as I did! From members’ feedback recently, we’ve been told that one of the biggest issues they face is cash flow management, which was the same issue elected by members in the past few years as well. For this edition, we’ve included articles from some of our Corporate Supporters to give you a little insight into some measures you can take to assist with this. Optimum Recoveries have provided an article with five tips on improving cash flow collections on page 16, and Openpay have provided an article around managing your money better, and how a payment system can change your customer experience forever on page 30. Take the time to read these articles and consider what you can do differently. I’d like to say to special thank you to the ladies on the Women’s Plumbing Alliance (WPA) Committee, who you can learn a bit more about on page 31 of this edition. This committee is made up of volunteers from the industry who meet regularly to discuss issues and initiatives to help grow the WPA Group and see it successfully assist females in the industry. If you’d like to get more involved with this group, visit www.mpaq.com.au/membership/WPA for more information. Congratulations to any of our members reaching membership milestones with MPAQ recently and a huge welcome to our new members in this edition. I hope to see you out and about!

Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards

Are You OK?

Thank you to everyone who attended the Plumbing & Gas Industry Awards evening, or as I call it, the ‘Logies’ for the industry. It was such an honour to be part of these celebrations that recognise the achievements of outstanding plumbers, drainers, apprentices, gasfitters, hydraulic consultants and other individuals working in the industry.

Recently I have had the opportunity to attend two forums to hear the confronting message that the team from Mates in Construction deliver to the Queensland construction industry every day. For those of you that have not heard of Mates in Construction (MIC), they are a charityorganisation that delivers awareness sessions that outline the high rate of suicide in the Queensland building and construction industry.

A special thank you to all of our amazing sponsors, especially our Event Partner Tradelink, events like these are not possible without their support. Congratulations to all of our finalists and winners, each of you should be extremely proud of yourselves and your team. You can read up on all our winners on pages 10 – 14.

Service Trades Council (STC) I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Alison Byrne on her appointment as our new Assistant Commissioner for the Queensland Building and Construction Commission. As the Chair of the STC, I will be working closely with Alison for the betterment of the plumbing, mechanical and fire protection industries. Alison is excited to join the STC and to be leading the Building and Trade Services Division at the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC). Our remaining STC Forum in 2018 will be held 22 November, Brisbane North, Caboolture. Please make time to come along to this important industry forum to hear about the latest changes to legislation and also provide feedback direct to the STC members. The 2019 dates for these events will be announced soon. The STC is established under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2002 to represent Queensland’s service trades. If you have any feedback about the STC, please email me directly (penny.cornah@mpaq.com.au). I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate the National Fire Industry Association President, Mr Andrew Hickman on his appointment to the Board of the QBCC. This is the first time that a services trades sector contractor has ever been appointed to Queensland’s peak industry regulator’s governing board. It’s great recognition of Andrew’s history of working with the Queensland Government in advocating for a better deal for trade contractors generally. If you would like to contact me please do so on 07 3273 0800 or via email at penny.cornah@mpaq.com.au.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

2018 is the tenth year that Mates in Construction have been actively educating our construction men and women and delivering the harsh reality that we work in an industry that has a greater risk of suicide than any other industry in Australia. From research MIC have gathered since their conception in 2008, the Queensland construction workers aged between 15 - 29 years old have a suicide rate of 58.6 deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 12.2 per 100,000 population for Australia as a whole. This statistic is alarming! The research survey included some questions to find out why our men and women in the Queensland construction industry are at such an elevated risk. The number one reason reported was relationship break downs, followed by pending legal action and financial problems. As a result of the study, it was identified that a number of inter-related factors often collided prior to the suicide of a construction worker, many of which were preventable if they were identified in time and support was offered. The study recognised the need to increase the ability of everyone in the industry to identify changes to individual personalities and behaviors. It’s important that we all look out for each other and we notice the changes in personalities, behaviors and attitudes that are out of character. Quite often this is an attempt to attract attention and can be a call for help. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone if you notice something different and ask them if they are OK. More specifically, ask them if they are thinking of suicide. From experience, it is not an easy conversation to have but once they are over the shock that someone has noticed that they’re not themselves, they open-up and the relief on their face is usually evident. The Australian construction industry is a great place to build a career, and we all need to make sure that our younger men and women receive our support when they need it the most.

Life’s Good!

Industry News Welcome to the New Assistant Commissioner The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Assistant Commissioner, Alison Byrne. Alison’s other legal roles include senior lawyer in the Office of the General Council NSW Police Force and Principal Legal Officer at the NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC), in the latter establishing the NSWEC’s enforcement function. Alison has led legal and regulatory teams, most recently as Executive Director of the NSWEC’s regulatory division, a multidisciplinary team responsible for regulation of compliance with State and Local Government election, campaign finance and lobbyist laws. The division also administers the registration of electoral participants and the election public funding scheme in NSW. Alison is excited to be joining the QBCC and to be leading the Building and Trade Services Division as a member of the Service Trades Council.

The Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) Why do I Need the PCA? The Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA) is the critical link between the Plumbing Acts and Regulations in each State and Territory and product or installation standards including the AS/NZS 3500 suite. It contains the technical requirements for plumbing in Australia. So, if you’re working in the plumbing or building industries, you need to be across the PCA! SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

Simplified Safety Regulation in Effect from September 2018 The Plumbing & Gas Inspectorate, in consultation with stakeholders, has developed a new stand-alone Petroleum and Gas (Safety) Regulation 2018 that is effective from 1 September 2018. The new regulation modernises the language used, removes redundant provisions, and updates some technical references.

Key changes include: • New section numbering • Streamlined requirements for incident reporting • The way codes and standards are applied as safety requirements has been simplified • References to standards and codes have been revised.

Important changes for industry include: • A new consolidated Code of Practice for the construction and abandonment of coal seam gas and petroleum wells, and associated bores in Queensland replaces the two existing codes. • For operating plant, notification of incidents has been refocused to serious incidents with clearer thresholds for reporting • The Code of Practice for leak management has been updated.

Important changes for gas fitters include: • Updated forms will be available online from 1 September 2018. • Updated compliance plates, defect notices, gas system compliance certificates and vehicle/vessel inspection certificates will be available from early October 2018; however, existing compliance plates, defect notices and certificates can still be used until 30 June 2019. Supporting materials will be available on the Business Queensland website (www.business.qld.gov.au).

Quick Facts • The PCA is also known as Volume Three of the National Construction Code. • The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB), with the State and Territory governments and the plumbing industry develops and maintains the PCA. • Each State and Territory references the PCA through their Plumbing Acts and Regulations as the technical requirements that must be complied with.

Big Changes Coming Soon…

an Updated PCA

• The PCA applies to design, construction, installation, replacement, repair, alteration and maintenance of plumbing/drainage systems including cold and heated water services and sanitary plumbing and drainage systems.

Changes to the PCA that will have effect from 1 May 2019 are nearing completion. If you’re a registered user, keep an eye out for the email alert in early 2019 or check back at the ABCB website.

• Plumbing compliance is more than meeting the requirements in the AS/NZS 3500 series of standards; you also need the PCA.

How do I access the PCA?

• The PCA’s Performance Requirements allow for new and innovative plumbing solutions to be considered.

Register online at www.abcb.gov.au to get free access! When you register, don’t forget to opt in to receive emails from the ABCB. It’s the best way to stay up-to-date with their plumbing news.

• The ABCB has a range of resources available to increase your knowledge of the PCA. Check out the ABCB’s Resource Library at www.abcb.gov.au.

community 9

MPAQ Supporting our Community MPAQ was approached recently to assist with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) community project at Logan. The ADRA Community Centre in Logan Central, South of Brisbane, provides emergency relief and assistance to people who have hit hard times. ADRA exists to help others and provide a range of assistance including food, clothing, furniture, training, emergency relief and assistance to those in need and those suffering the effects of relocation due to domestic violence. They operate a weekly soup kitchen every Monday night and they supply an additional 500 food parcels per week. As a humanitarian organisation ADRA are a global community serving people not just in Logan but across the state, the country, and around the world. They exist to help others, whether it’s development or relief. They do this with an army of volunteers and many other committed people who ensure the smooth running of their operation. MPAQ was involved in the commercial kitchen upgrade and we worked very closely with Henk La Dru, the Centre Manager at ADRA Logan.

theBackFlowA FINALLY …. an efficient, faster way to schedule & report Backflow, Thermostatic Mixing Valve & Eye Wash Tests

The Hon. Mick de Brenni MP, Minister for Housing and Public Works, Minister for Digital Technology and Minister for Sport, attended the Community Centre on Christmas Day in 2017. The Minister had the opportunity to see first-hand the essential service offering that the centre provides the community at large. The Department of Housing and Public Works offers funding for specific community projects through the Dignity First funding program, which ADRA applied for. Although ADRA was successful in receiving funding, the budget did not cover all of the kitchen renovations. The purpose of the kitchen upgrade is to not only prepare food for those less fortunate but to also train the community about food preparation, handling and cooking skills. MPAQ would like to thank Kent Vickers, President of MPAQ, who led the project in conjunction with Dennis Yarrow, from Yarrow Plumbing Services, who completed all the plumbing work on this project. The job presented a couple of challenges with the major one being the upgrade of the existing grease trap to a 1,000L and fitting the grease trap into the only available area at the side of the building, in a space no wider than 1.2m. They also had to divert the existing water sewer and stormwater around the new Halgan grease trap. A special acknowledgement of thanks to the following manufacturers who donated products for the community kitchen: • Halgan • Reece • Australian Valve Group (AVG) MPAQ has a corporate social responsibility to assist the community, and we were proud to be a part of this project.

business

5 TIPS

TO IMPROVE CASH FLOW COLLECTIONS 56% of businesses don’t survive past their 5th birthday... Cash Flow woe is the major cause.

1

Expectations are everything

New client? Like any relationship, it makes good business sense to have a frank and clear discussion up-front to clarify your mutual expectations. When it comes time to discuss credit and payment terms, gone are the days of a hand shake or verbal agreement being secure. It pays to spell-out the rules.

2

Tighten up your terms

Your written terms and conditions are important and set up the “rules of engagement” for each party to work to and can offer a safety net if the relationship crashes. Your terms should work for you and be secure without being scary for your prospective client. At a minimum they should include:

• When and how payment must be made; • What the consequence is for failing to pay on time; and • Personal guarantees, disclaimers, warranties and registration of security interests. Your terms become crucial when a customer fails to pay an invoice or is dissatisfied with the services provided, and you need to limit your liability or recover the debt.

A healthy cash flow goes a long way towards keeping your business moving. The more effective your cash flow cycle, the more successful your business will be. The good news is there are a few simple things you can start doing today to keep on top of your cash flow now and well into the future. Turn the tables on that horrific statistic and be in charge of your cash flow (with confidence) and remove the stigma and fear around asking for your invoices to be paid.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

Water-tight accounts receivable procedures will help your business plug any late payment leaks before your accounts dry up. As soon as an account is close to becoming overdue, be ready to go with a friendly followup call. The longer an overdue account is left to sit idle, the higher your chances of non-payment become. A quick phone call to your customer the day after payment falls due is essential. Any arrangement that is made between your company and your customer (including an extension of time to pay or a payment plan) should be immediately documented on your systems and put in writing to your customer on the same day.

No WaterMark Equals Non-conforming Building Product The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) is urging industry members to ensure they check for WaterMark certification on plumbing and drainage products, or face penalties under non-conforming building products (NCBP) laws. QBCC Commissioner, Brett Basssett, said that plumbing and drainage products must have WaterMark if they are to be sold and used in Queensland. “If a plumbing and drainage product is offered for sale in Queensland without the required WaterMark, it is an NCBP,” he said. ‘Certified items’ are generally listed on the WaterMark Product Database and are easily identified by the WaterMark certification trademark, which is marked on the product upon the granting of its WaterMark licence. Occupational plumbers and drainers must not install noncertified products (i.e. non-WaterMark products) unless exemptions apply (according to the Standard Plumbing and Drainage Regulation). That has always been the case but since the introduction of NCBP legislation by the Queensland Government, it is now also an offence under the Queensland Building and Construction Commission Act 1991 (QBCC Act) (for not complying with a relevant Act or Standard). “All members of the Queensland building industry chain of responsibility are required to ensure they do not use an NCBP and they must also report any use of an NCBP to the QBCC,” Mr Bassett said. The chain of responsibility includes:

If a product is installed by the carrying out of plumbing or drainage work under the PD Act and it is required by section 30 of the SPDR to be a ‘certified item’ (that is, to have WaterMark certification), it is an NCBP if it does not have WaterMark certification. Contact the QBCC on 139 333 for further information.

Question: As a licensed plumber, am I able to perform works on fire systems, and what licenses / endorsements do I need? Written by Ernie Kretschmer, Technical Services Manager, MPAQ

Plumbing and Fire The short answer is yes to the majority of the water based fire systems. The plumbing and drainage occupational licence scope of work includes (but is not limited to):

Water base sprinkler irrigation systems can also be installed by a licenced plumber who holds the appropriate endorsement for sprinkler systems on their metal fascias and gutters occupational licence. on-site domestic waste water management systems o Commercial and industrial roof and wall cladding

• Installing, commissioning, maintaining and testing plumbing and drainage services in all classes of buildings and premises, including but not limited to, the following: o o o o o

Annual Close Down Christmas/New Year Period Written by Kym Campbell Senior Workplace Relations Advisor, MPAQ

The festive season is fast approaching with Christmas just around the corner. Are you closing down for a period over the Christmas/New Year break? If so, here is a reminder on the process that you must take in informing your employees. The Fair Work Act allows for an employer to close down the workplace during traditionally slow periods, such as between Christmas and New Year. During this time the Act provides general provisions for an employer to direct an employee to take accumulated annual leave for the duration of the close down, depending on the type of employee and the modern award they are covered by. Under both the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award and the Building and Construction General On-Site Award an employer may direct their employees to take paid annual leave during all or part of a period in conjunction with the Christmas/New Year holidays, and close down the business for the purpose of providing such leave. You as the employer must provide a minimum of 8 (eight) weeks notice to employees that the business will be closing down over the Christmas/New Year period and that they will be required to take annual leave. Under both the Clerks – Private Sector Award and the General Retail Industry Award, you as the employer must provide a minimum of 4 (four) weeks notice to employees that the business will be closing down over the Christmas/ New Year period and that they will be required to take annual leave. For any employees that do not have sufficient accrued annual leave for the close down, they may be required to take leave without pay or they may be granted pre-approved annual leave for the period.

INDUSTRY TRENDS A Full Pipeline

Written by Robert Sobyra Director of Evidence and Data, Construction Skills Queensland

A little later this year, Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) will publish its Apprentice Annual – our yearly look at the state of the construction trade pipeline in Queensland. Here’s a sneak peek at the picture for plumbers. It’s no secret that residential activity is shrinking across South East Queensland. We are coming off a record building boom and it will take some time to fully flush-out this excess supply before we embark on the next big upswing. But it will come; it always does. The downturn is starting to show up in the overall workforce numbers. The number of people working in a construction trade shrunk by 12,000 in the past year. Tradies now account for 1-in-20 workers in Queensland. But it looks like someone forgot to tell the plumbers to stop hiring. There are just over 18,000 plumbers in Queensland at the moment – 25% more than this time last year. And the vast majority of them work in construction, as opposed to maintenance and other functions. The pool of plumbing apprentices is also brimming – 20% fuller than last year. Queensland plumbers have taken on apprentices at a rate twice as high as the other construction trades. Well done. You’ll need every one of them. Even though the residential construction pipeline looks thin beyond 2019, we’re forecasting high demand for plumbers next year. In every region across the state, plumbers will be in shortage. Cairns in particular faces a substantial shortage of plumbing labour. Things aren’t quite as tight in the South-East corner, but there’ll be plenty of work to go around. For more information visit www.csq.org.au.

Warm Water and the Current Legislation Framework The Legionella Management Advisory Group (LMAG), has identified a growing need to develop a new Australian and New Zealand Standard that reflects the design and installation requirements of a Warm Water (WW) system. This topic can be directly linked to the growing trend to design and install WW systems within health care facilities to reduce the ongoing maintenance costs associated with servicing Thermostatic Mixing Values (TMV). The traditional method applied towards the delivery of WW at a nominated outlet, is to have a hot water circulated ring main (water circulated greater than 60 degrees) with TMVs installed to the nominated outlet. The current Australian and New Zealand (ASNZ) 3500.4, 2015; Heated Water Services standard provides the design and installation requirements associated with a hot water circulated ring main and TMV system.

Simple and easy super administration with

Cbus

However, it remains silent of WW systems, which means a person seeking to design and install a WW system must first develop an Alternative Solutions (AS) for submission and consideration via the relevant approving authority, e.g. local government, as stated in the Plumbing Code of Australia. This situation requires the approving authority against the AS to obtain information that allows for a full assessment to be undertaken. The assessment would also include consideration towards how the proposed WW system nominated within the AS will be maintained. Unfortunately, this process can often result in designers and installers experiencing delays towards obtaining approval from the approving authority, which is required to consider the WW system via the AS process. For example, should the approving authority lack the required information to make its determination against the proposed AS, it may not support the proposed WW system. Consideration should be made towards developing a WW standard that covers the design and installation elements of a WW system. This would in turn, provide designers and installers with the specifications against how a WW system can be designed and installed, to protect the health and safety of the public when exposed to a WW system. The Legionella Management Advisory Group (LMAG) would welcome further discussion on this topic, as it would appear the issues discussed within this article will remain until a standard for WW systems is introduced. Uponor PEXa Plumbing Fits Tiny Houses At a cozy 14 square meters, Tracey Powell’s “Lil’ Lodge” on wheels may be small, but it is big on features. With high-tech building systems combined with high-end appliances and furnishings, this home is nothing short of luxurious. Designed in collaboration with 30 architects, engineers, and materials specialists, this safe and sustainable home has helped educate and inspire everyone who has toured it since 2015.* The homeowner also happens to be its designer and builder. Together with her brother, she wanted to ensure her home was safe, sustainable, durable, functional and technological. When it came to choosing a plumbing system to meet all of her needs, she first did her research and then called Uponor. “We were worried that most plumbing connections wouldn’t hold up to vibration and movement during transport,” said Powell whose tiny house is on wheels for frequent transport. “So thank goodness we found Uponor cold expansion fittings, which are highly leak-resistant and get stronger over time.” Sustainability was another extremely important aspect of the project, especially when choosing a plumbing system. “I wanted the quality of my drinking water to be high,” explained Powell. “The fact that Uponor cold expansion fittings don’t need adhesives and glues like other fittings was very important to me. I don’t want chemicals seeping into my water.”

While every centimeter counts in a tiny home, Powell was pleased with the flexibility of the Uponor PEX-a tubing. The bendradius made it easy to install quick turns changing direction without the need for a fitting. Building a tiny house comes with challenges, but Uponor helped tackle these challenges with a little creativity. “We wanted to prevent the PEX tubing from touching the spray foam insulation, but needed it located as close to the interior conditioned space as possible and in a very narrow wall cavity,” said Powell. “Even though the PEX-a pipe resists freezing and condensation, we took extra precautions and used Uponor’s pipe-in-pipe solution to protect the PEX tubing - it’s worked out great.” Because the tiny house includes numerous high-end technologies, there are many plumbing fixtures with metal fittings. Powell was impressed with how easy and seamless it was to connect the cold expansion fittings with the wide-array of metal fittings. In the future, Powell plans to consult other homeowners in designing their very own tiny houses and wants to help navigate them through best products, practices and processes - and she says an Uponor PEX plumbing system is definitely on her list. “The Uponor plumbing system is the easiest and most efficient piping for any tiny house,” she said. With its great advantages, the flexible Uponor PEXa plumbing system is not only suiting the needs and requirements of tiny houses but also the trend for prefabricated homes in Australia. To learn more about Uponor’s PEX-a Plumbing system, visit: www.uponor.com.au. *Powell has showcased her “Lil’Lodge” at the Architecture Boston Expo (USA) in November 2015.

Beware When Signing Form 15 In a recent case the Queensland Court of Appeal held an engineer personally liable for signing an incorrect Form 15 (compliance certificate for building design or specification). The exact damages payable are yet to be decided but could be substantial.

The Facts The plaintiff purchased a commercial premises which were described as an “architecturally designed, single free-standing corporate headquarters/warehouse”. The building was new. The floor of the building was a floating concrete slab. An engineering company had designed the floating concrete slab and the engineer director of the company had signed the Form 15 (Compliance Certificate – Design) in relation to the floating concrete slab. Importantly, the Form 15 said: “…that the item/s described below, if installed and carried out in accordance with the information contained in this certificate, including any referenced documentation, will comply with the Standard Building Regulation.” In due course, the engineer also issued a Form 16 (Compliance Certificate – Construction), in relation to the floating concrete slab. Later, the floating concrete slab subsided and the owner of the unit sued five defendants including the engineer and his company. All claims were settled except those against the engineer and his company. As well as being sued in negligence, they were sued for misleading and deceptive conduct for issuing an incorrect Form 15. The building owner lost its case in negligence but won its case based on misleading and deceptive conduct.

The Court of Appeal found that the certification was incorrect, because the floating concrete slab did not comply with AS3600, and consequently it did not comply with the Building Code of Australia or the Standard Building Regulation. On the basis of this finding, the Court accepted that the engineering company had engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct, and that it had therefore breached section 52 of the Trade Practices Act (now section 18 of the Competition and Consumer Law). In addition, the Court found that the engineer/director of the Company was also personally liable as he knew the company of which he was a director was issuing the Form 15, which would be given to a building certifier, who would be entitled to rely upon it as being correct without having to check when approving the works, by virtue of the provisions of the Building Regulations.

Implications Everyone has always known that the issuing of a Form 15 is a serious matter and those doing so must take great care to ensure it is correct. However, this case highlights the seriousness. Failure to take this task seriously, may not only expose your company to liability but you personally to a substantial damages payment. Those issuing Form 15s might want to consider qualifying them in cases where they are concerned about potential exposure to liability. You should also make sure that your insurance covers not only your company but any person issuing the forms. For legal advice relating to Form 15 liability or any construction law matter, contact one of the Solicitors at McKay’s Solicitors on 07 3223 5942.

ELIMINATE DUST FOR A SAFER WORKPLACE Dust Removal Systems

Dust in the workplace is dangerous. Hilti Dust Removal Systems not only improve safety, but contribute to greater productivity. Dust particles generated during cutting, grinding, drilling and breaking operations in construction contain small amounts of Respirable Crystalline Silica or RCS. Exposure to RCS should be prevented where practical as it can be harmful. Hilti products are designed to minimise dust emissions to keep you healthy. What is this Crystalline Silica we’ve been hearing so much about? Silica is a natural mineral which is found in rocks, sand and clay, which means it is also present in bricks and concrete. A small fraction of Silica occurs in a sharp, hard Crystalline form. Particles smaller than 10 microns in diameter can be breathed directly into the lungs and can cause damage leading to Silicosis. This is called ‘Respirable Crystalline Silica’ (RCS).

Without DRS

The national exposure standard of RCS is 0.1 mg/m3 (in an 8-hour Time Weighted Average period). Hilti is committed to helping you reduce dust exposure and increase your productivity on site with tools and accessories designed to greatly reduce exposure to dust. We have a range of dust hoods that can be attached to angle grinders and then connected to a vacuum cleaner for chasing or cutting. You can also attach an on-board vacuum system to Hilti TE 4-A or TE 6-A cordless rotary hammer drills. It’s time to take advantage of all the benefits of Hilti dust control solutions.

New Family & Domestic Violence Leave Entitlements Following a Fair Work Commission decision in July 2018, from the first full pay period on or after 1 August 2018, most employees will be able to take unpaid leave to deal with family and domestic violence. All employees (including casual employees) covered by an Award with the new clause are entitled to five days unpaid family and domestic violence leave. There will be some exceptions being: • Enterprise Awards • State reference Public Sector Awards However, the following Awards covering employees in the plumbing industry will contain the new clause: • Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award • Building and Construction General On-site Award • Clerks – Private Sector Award • General Retail Award

What is Family and Domestic Violence? Family and domestic violence means violent, threatening or other abusive behaviour by an employee’s family member that: • Seeks to coerce or control the employee • Causes them harm or fear A family member includes an employee’s: • Spouse or former spouse • De facto partner or former de facto partner • Child • Parent • Grandparent • Grandchild • Sibling • Current or former spouse or de facto partner’s child, parent, grandparent, grandchild or sibling • A person related to the employee according to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander kinship rules

Taking Family and Domestic Violence Leave Employees are entitled to the full five days from the day they start work – they don’t have to build it up over time. The five days renews each 12 months but doesn’t accumulate from year to year if it isn’t used.

When Can Employees Take Family and Domestic Violence Leave? Employees can take the leave if they need to deal with the impact of family and domestic violence and it’s impractical to do so outside their ordinary hours of work. For example, this could include: • Making arrangements for their safety or safety of a family member (including relocation) • Attending court hearings • Accessing police services The leave doesn’t need to be taken all at once and can be taken as single or multiple days. An employer and employee can also agree for an employee to take less than one day or more at a time, or for the employee to take more than five days.

Notice and Evidence for Family and Domestic Violence Leave Employees need to let their employer know as soon as possible that they will be taking leave under the family and domestic violence leave clause. Employees also need to tell their employer how long they expect the leave to last.

Evidence Requirements An employer can ask their employee for evidence that shows the employee took the leave to deal with family and domestic violence. If the employee doesn’t provide the requested evidence, they may not get family and domestic violence leave.

Types of Evidence Types of evidence can include: • Documents issued by the police service • Documents issued by a court • Family violence support service documents • A statutory declaration Employers can request employees to provide evidence for as little as one day or less off work.

Confidentiality Employers have to take reasonably practicable steps to keep any information about an employee’s situation confidential. This includes information about the employee giving notice that they’re taking the leave and any evidence they provide. Employers are not prevented from disclosing information if: • It is required by law; or • Is necessary to protect the life, health or safety of the employee or another person. Employers need to be aware that any information about an employee’s experience of family and domestic violence is sensitive. If information is mishandled, it could have adverse consequences for their employee. Employers should work with their employee to discuss and agree on how this information will be handled. For further information please contact the MPAQ Workplace Relations team on 07 3273 0800 or email hr@mpaq.com.au.

The evidence has to convince a reasonable person that the employee took the leave to deal with the impact of family and domestic violence. MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE

Super Amnesty Do You Have a Super Problem?

You don’t really know how it happened, you were doing so well, you were on top of everything, you made all your payments on time, and then your accountant told you that your superannuation payments weren’t calculated correctly. You have a catch up payment to make for all your employees. You have been told that paying super late results in all sorts of penalties and you are worried.

What happens now? In a bid to help small businesses with rectifying their outstanding super obligations, the government has announced a ‘one off’ amnesty to catch up on any outstanding super payments.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

What does this mean? If you have found yourself in the situation where you have missed payments, miscalculated payments, or didn’t realise you had an obligation, you now have a 12 month period to catch up on all those missed payments, without any penalty or recourse! Announced on the 24 May 2018, the window of opportunity will close on 23 May 2019. This window allows you to catch up on all superannuation obligations (even as far back as 1992 if needed). There is some paperwork to complete and the payments need to be made, including a little extra to cover the interest your employees would otherwise have received if the payments had been made on time. You will also be entitled to a tax deduction once the payments are made.

Sounds almost too good to be true…. What’s the catch?

We are still waiting for the government to pass the law! While the Bill has been passed, it has not yet received Royal Assent, meaning it is not yet law. Our advice is to hold off making that voluntary disclosure until this amnesty is officially law. Our primary concern is that any voluntary disclosure made currently will not fall under the amnesty and, therefore, will have penalties imposed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). For further information, we suggest contacting your accountant to discuss further. Check out the exclusive bookkeeping and tax accounting pricing bundles for MPAQ members by Xact Accounting. Manage Your Money Better How a payment system can change your customer experience forever Over the past four years Australians have experienced a NEW way to shop. Buy Now Pay Later has become a phenomenon with sales expected to topple 3 billion this calendar year (2018). So the question begs, WHY? Surprisingly the answer is simple. Technology. Just like so many new waves of market enthusiasm, technology has made something old very relevant and sexy again. Not to mention faster, less hassle and way cooler. For decades the traditional taxi had the market cornered – then as technology progressed, along came Uber. Once when you were looking for accommodation, you were confined to either a hotel/motel that was commonly known - technology saw Airbnb revolutionise accommodation access and choices. For so long, Dad had to race out of the house and collect the takeaway food technology brought UberEATS, Menulog and Deliveroo with food delivery to your door. Technology platforms often take a mature service offering and revitalise it by making it accessible, cool and relevant. That’s precisely what’s happened to the old fashion lay-by system. Remember when you used to go back to the store multiple times and gradually pay off that special item that you so desperately wanted? Well now thanks to technology, you can have what you want, take it home (or get it fixed or installed) today, and pay for it over time – without the threat of nasty interest payments. But more importantly, technology has shifted how the customer thinks and feels.

This is Your Future Customer “Why should I wait? I am entitled to have the best and the most relevant product or service offering, please make it available and make it available in a way that I can afford – one that does not mean I have to re-shuffle all of my other lifestyle choices. Make it simple, easy to understand, no risk, hassle free and super quick. Oh yeah, I want it yesterday so I can buy more of this, more of that and experience a whole lot more of everything… thanks.” Welcome to a new customer mindset. We see more, read more, experience more, and of course we eventually WANT MORE. And if you are thinking, that’s only how Millennials or Gen X’ers think – you might be missing the mark or taking a narrow view of the impact of change that is happening right now. This new shift in consumerism and alternative payment methods is bigger than you think and far more reaching than you’d ever imagine. Things have changed in the customer’s mind and now businesses have to come to the party and offer their product or service in a very different way - a way that requires very little compromise or disruption for customers to engage.

SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

Right now across Australia, there are most likely thousands, if not millions of sales dollars that might be had if the process of consumer engagement with the brand and the access to payment was easier, faster, less riskier, less disruptive and more manageable. For brand communities that choose NOT to evolve, sales will become much slower, or not at all. Or they will be forced to SPEND vast amounts of money to attract new customers - and when they finally arrive, make them an offer that is too good to refuse (discount). It sounds sort of counter intuitive doesn’t it? Spend more to make less?

Buy Now, Pay Later ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ is a revolution in today’s business environment, and it’s easy to see why. Giving your customer what they want sits at the very core of every effective business and marketing strategy. Meeting their needs and wants is the quest to stay relevant and engaging. By spreading the spend out over more manageable periods, like 3 months, 6 months or 12 months, customers are able to manage their credit card facility with much smaller amounts being deducted, which means they are less likely to fall into default and pay higher credit card interest fees. No matter which way you look at it, ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ is here to stay, and customers aren’t just expecting you to offer it, they are demanding it. The fact remains that this type of payment system is the new way to ENGAGE. It’s no longer an “alternative payment option”, it’s gone mainstream. Article written by Gino De Pasquale

Tradettes

From suffering abuse and harassment whilst doing my plumbing apprenticeship, I have now completed my Certificate IV in Plumbing and obtained my nominated supervisor licence. I am a busy mother of two children, the mastermind behind creating Australia’s first female plumbing service and enjoy fostering learning opportunities for my apprentices – all within eight years and under the age of 30 years.

The Plumbette

I’m a plumber, blogger, stylist, wife and mother. I believe a girl can be both practical and stylish, which is why I write both a plumbing and styling blog (‘The Plumbette’ and ‘Styled by Bec’). I studied a Diploma of Fashion Styling while I did my plumbing apprenticeship in my smoko break. I’ve been in the plumbing industry for over 10 years and love seeing women work in all aspects of the trade industry.

Previously I worked in a school environment and have now been in the plumbing and gas industry for just a few years. I enjoy being a part of the Women’s Plumbing Alliance as I now have contact with a network of members who have knowledge and experience in the industry allowing me access to some great tips and advice.

The Women’s Plumbing Alliance was established for the women working behind the scenes and on the tools in plumbing and gas businesses. The group is about recognising, connecting and empowering women in the industry. Find out more about the group and how to get involved at www.mpaq.com.au/membership/WPA.

Gainsite Plumbing, Bathrooms & Kitchens

I have now worked in the plumbing industry for over eighteen years with my husband Dale at Gainsite Plumbing and Gas in Bundaberg. Even though I have gained an in depth knowledge of the plumbing industry whilst working in the industry, none of it could have been achieved without the help of a few key people and without the support and advice from other women in the industry.

New Safe Jetting Initiative In a key move to assist plumbers in complying with Australian jetting safety standards, Aussie Pumps has announced a new Safe Jetting initiative. The program supports plumbers in upgrading their safety procedures and maximising the wellbeing of operators. The Aussie Safe Jetting program consists of three elements. The first is a safe jetting guide. This document identifies ways in which the hazards associated with jetting can be controlled. It also covers the use of equipment and techniques that reduce risks. The second element in the initiative is a set of ‘Safe Jetting’ decals for use on the machine. These highly visible and easy to understand labels act as a constant reminder to the operator on their obligations to work safely at all times. They also alert others in the vicinity of the dangers of jetting. The new stickers are free to operators of older jetters irrespective of the brand. The third element in the program is the Aussie Safe Jetting Accessory pack. The pack includes a set of safety accessories that reduce the risks of working with high pressure jets. The kit includes a safety plate, foot valve, hose shroud and safety gloves that protect the operator from jets up to 500 bar.

Further information on the safety standards and the Aussie Safe Jetting Initiative are readily available from Aussie Pump authorised Aussie Cobra Jetter distributors.

Your Key to Putting More Money Back into Your Pocket Admit it - you are a great plumber, you have many customers that are happy with the quality of your work, but in the back of your mind there is a niggling voice reminding you “When you get back into your office, don’t forget to update your books, send out those invoices, reconcile those accounts”. It’s like a broken record, that keeps repeating itself and let’s face it, you are a tradie, not a “bean counter”. As you get back to your office, the intention is there somewhere - but then you feel tired, the family is calling, the footy is about to start, so the little voice kicks in again - “I’ll get to this tomorrow, for sure!” But we all know you don’t! Years ago you would have been stuck until you physically got to it. Today, technology has come to the rescue. By transitioning your accounts to “the Cloud”, access to information can be achieved from anywhere where internet is available. You can upload invoices, receipts, work orders, instantaneously giving you the flexibility of having all information available at an instant. What this means is you can delegate the bookkeeping and account management to an external bookkeeping “Angel in the Cloud” who will login on your behalf, every day to ensure your accounts are fully reconciled and up to date. Even better, your “Angel in the Cloud” will set up automated processes to reduce the time needed to be spent working in your accounts. Yes, you will pay them, but you also free up your time so you can do that extra two or three jobs that will generate additional income for you. You will quickly see this as a valuable investment, as opposed to an expense. The bottom line is you will know exactly how your business is travelling daily, it is sure to improve your efficiency, improve the overall customer experience and put more money back into your pocket so you can enjoy the footy, whichever code you follow. Don’t let your knowledge gap get you in the poo, contact 9th Day today and start managing your business with a “stress free attitude!” Call them on 1800 985 299 or visit www.9thday.com.au.

The Brute Beveller removes the need for an angle grinder by safely bevelling Blue Brute in 25 seconds or less. The Brute Beveller is now available through Reece Australia-wide and several other plumbing suppliers. This specialist tool has revolutionised the Australian Plumbing Industry’s use of Blue Brute. 100% Australian owned and operated, the Brute Beveller company is dedicated to innovation, safety and customer service. Brute Beveller’s history started when Jeff, a Brisbane plumber of 35 years, was sitting at the bottom of a trench (as we have all done at some time). It had just rained, it was muddy, cold and he had more Blue Brute joints to get done before the day was finished than he really wanted to think about. He thought, “there has to be a better way,” and so Brute Beveller was born. Jeff combined forces with a lifelong friend to design, patent, produce and now sell the Brute Beveller. Currently available in two sizes (100mm and 150mm) with more sizes in development, the Brute Beveller answers a question gone unanswered for many years. For more information about retail or wholesale enquiries, please call 1300 238 355 or visit www.brutebeveller.com.au.
