Editor’s Note Welcome to the Autumn edition of the Master Plumber Magazine! As I write my first editor’s note of 2022, the extreme weather event of late-February is unfolding, and the team at MPAQ is preparing to offer support to our members and promote to the wider community the importance of making plumbing a priority after heavy rainfall. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been a focus over the last two years, I am once again reminded about how vital the plumbing and gas industry is to the health and safety of our society. Queenslanders are no strangers to battling through natural disasters, but if you’re experiencing long-term effects from the latest disaster, please contact the MPAQ office on 07 3273 0800 to see how we can support you and your business. The main feature of this edition is sustainability. With World Earth Day coming up on 22 April 2022 and MPAQ’s participation in the Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme, there’s no better time to look at how plumbing and gas businesses can embrace environmental sustainability to protect tomorrow, today. We also celebrate the businesses who have already been instrumental when working on environmentally friendly
and sustainable projects. Has your business been working on a similar project in Queensland in the last year? Consider nominating for the 2022 Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards when nominations open soon! Call MPAQ on 07 3273 0800 for more information or email events@mpaq.com.au. Our 2022 events and training courses are underway, with some exciting opportunities coming up this year. Check out what’s coming up over the next few months on pages 30-31, including regional Backflow training and the return of the Plumbing and Gas Trade Expos! Congratulations to all members reaching milestones in this edition, and a warm welcome to our newest members. Happy Reading!

EXECUTIVE
PERSPECTIVE Welcome to 2022! Well, it’s been an interesting start to the year, and I hope all our members are staying safe in these unpredictable times. Earlier this year I caught COVID, like many others, but fortunately I recovered very quickly and got straight back into my work as soon as I could. This year we have been advocating with government regarding the definition of critically Penny Cornah, Executive Director essential workers and critical industries, requesting an expansion of the current definitions within the rules to include the checking, maintenance, and repair (including emergency repair) of plumbing systems. Apart from advocating for critically essential workers we have been preparing information for the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) governance review. On 16 November 2021, the Queensland Government announced an independent review of the QBCC governance arrangements. The review will examine the roles and responsibilities of the QBCC and Queensland Building and Construction (QBC) Board, along with the policies, procedures and practices of the QBCC and QBC Board. This is to ensure these arrangements are best practice for a regulator of this kind and fit for purpose to deliver on the objectives under the QBCC Act. MPAQ is always working to make sure that the plumbing industry’s voice is heard during the review process and asked members to complete a brief
survey. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey, this information was submitted to government. QBCC has also announced the appointment of highly credentialled public and private sector leader, Ms Anissa Levy, who has been appointed as CEO and Commissioner of the QBCC. MPAQ is looking forward to working with Anissa. Thank you to everyone who celebrated World Plumbing Day on 11 March and attended the breakfast MPAQ ran in Brisbane. I’d like to say a big congratulations to our MPAQ Ambassadors who were appointed at the breakfast, and a heartfelt thank you to the 2021 Ambassadors who passed on the torch. The 2022 Plumbing Ambassadors include two regional ambassadors, Ben Byrne from CQ Relining Pty Ltd in Yeppoon and Stephen Morton from Morton Plumbing in Townsville. We also have three ambassadors who are based in Brisbane and will represent the industry across South East Queensland: Damian Connor from Evermore Plumbing & Gas Pty Ltd, Natalie Denning from Fallon Solutions Pty Ltd, and Brett McIlvride from PRP Services. To ensure the longevity of our industry, MPAQ has a vested interest in promoting both the professional and personal opportunities that can arise from not just being a plumber, drainer, and/or gasfitter, but also working in such a lifesaving trade. MPAQ is committed to working alongside ambassadors, assisting them in driving future apprentices into the trade and making sure there are enough apprenticeships available for those career seekers. Over the last four years, MPAQ has appointed 15 ambassadors who have represented the profession at career expos and schools to encourage career seekers and school students to consider a future in the plumbing and gas industry. The Plumbing Ambassadorship program is an important component of encouraging future generations of men and women to become involved in the plumbing and gas industry, and it will also be a vital resource for the development and sustainability of their careers. To contact me please call 07 3273 0800 or email penny.cornah@mpaq.com.au.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to the first Magazine for 2022. By now we are all used to the restriction placed on our lives through the COVID-19 Pandemic. We have had two years to adjust, and I think it would be foolish to think that we will ever be “COVID free”. The pandemic has certainly changed our lives and for some, it has claimed a family member or close friend. I like to think of myself as an optimist and out of all this upheaval Kent Vickers, President I have been looking for a positive. The fact that we are all still working and supporting our families is possibly the biggest grace our wonderful industry has given us. But what else has it done? It has made us “pivot” (a word I hate) to find other ways to communicate, meet and progress our businesses with the minimum amount of disruption to our lives. Most of our meetings are no longer face to face but are in front of a screen on a Zoom or Teams conference call. While I miss the social banter and a cleansing Ale after a meeting, this has become the new normal. As Australians and especially Queenslanders, we are fortunate to still have our quality of life, something that we have protected with vigour for over a century, and we should be grateful for having it. The Queensland Hydrogen Industry continues to flourish with an announcement made daily by the State or Federal governments. Queensland clearly has international support for new projects to be based in our state.

| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
This is mainly because of our climate and the willingness of industry to cater to the international needs. MPAQ is already supporting the development of this technology through the new training facility at Beenleigh and industry engagement on satellite estates and houses that are powered by 100% clean, renewable hydrogen. The hydrogen industry will be a game changer for the Queensland economy, promising to deliver jobs and export earnings for our state. In 10 years’ time we might even have the first “Hydrogen Olympics”. World Plumbing Day was celebrated on 11 March again this year and MPAQ hosted a breakfast at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. This event is always well attended and great fun. A big thank you to the sponsors and ticket holders for investing time and money into this event. MPAQ has also made the decision to travel to the regions and support our corporate supporters by holding Plumbing and Gas Trade Expos. These events are your best opportunity to get hands on with products, speak with suppliers and discover new ideas for your business. I’m asking all our members to please look up the date of your local expo in the events calendar on pages 30 and 31, and make sure you put it into your calendar now. We need to be supporting these companies, as they do so much to not just support you, but also your industry association. It wouldn’t be a message from me without a gentle reminder to be aware of the mental health of the people around us. Don’t be afraid to ask them if they’re OK if they don’t seem themselves. The last two years has been tough, and we all need to look out for one another. 2022 is sure to provide some hurdles. If we all stick together, I’m sure it will be another successful year.
Life’s good!

CAFE/TAKEAWAY FOOD OUTLET INSPECTIONS The Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate has commenced a safety campaign to address the increasing number of gas leaks and fires in commercial kitchens. Over the past 24 months, six commercial catering businesses (takeaways and food services) have been involved in gas related incidents, which have resulted in serious burns requiring treatment in hospital as an in-patient. Contributory factors have included use of unapproved appliances and lack of emergency gas isolation valves. In one case, inspectors identified five open ends on gas valves in one kitchen at Biggera Waters. Other incidents have occurred due to gas suppliers not conducting the required gas system pressure tests before turning on supply to the gas system. Poor maintenance and workmanship by unskilled and unlicensed gas workers has also contributed. The campaign began at commercial food premises in Townsville, Airlie Beach, Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, but the high number of non-compliances identified has prompted the team to plan additional inspections at new locations in 2022. The campaign highlights the importance of maintaining a riskbased approach to gas safety in Uncapped open end food outlets. Article source – Resources Safety and Health QLD

TOP PLUMBING DEFECTS IDENTIFIED The top plumbing and drainage defects found by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) during routine inspections have been made public. Last financial year the most common defects were: • failing to get appropriate council approval; • problems from the installation of hot water heaters and temperature control devices; • incorrect installation of backflow prevention devices; • allowing contaminated water into drinking water; and • improper discharging of domestic sewage. Plumbing and drainage professionals play a central role in our community by making sure drinking water is potable and sewerage is disposed of properly. It is important that everyone doing plumbing and drainage work is appropriately licensed and aware of their responsibilities. For plumbing and drainage work that requires a Form 4/4A to be submitted to the QBCC (work performed in existing homes, including kitchen and bathroom plumbing renovations, installing or replacing hot water heaters, and extending or altering pipe work), this can be done online via myQBCC. A notifiable work tool is now available that will help identify if your work is notifiable work, permit work, minor work or unregulated work and make it easier to decide if you are required to submit a Form 4/4A. To find the tool go to qbcc.qld.gov.au and search for ‘notifiable work tool’. The QBCC has also recently developed educational videos on how to submit a notifiable work form and passive fire systems overview. These videos can be found on YouTube by searching for the QBCC channel. For more information on plumbing and drainage licensing and notifiable work requirements go to qbcc.qld.gov.au or call 139 333.
FIRST FEMALE CEO AND COMMISSIONER APPOINTED TO LEAD THE QBCC Highly credentialled public and private sector leader, Ms Anissa Levy, has been appointed as CEO and Commissioner of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC).
Anissa Levy, QBCC CEO and Commissioner and Penny Cornah, MPAQ Executive Director
Queensland Building and Construction Board Chair, Mr Dick Williams, said Ms Levy brings a wealth of private and public sector leadership experience to the QBCC. Ms Levy’s most recent role was as CEO of Water Infrastructure NSW. Her previous leadership roles have included Coordinator-General of the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Environment, Energy and Science Group, Deputy CEO and Head of Investor Assurance at Infrastructure NSW, and Acting Chair and CEO of the NSW Environment Protection Authority. “Ms Levy has significant knowledge and expertise in construction and infrastructure planning and delivery, as well as being an experienced regulator,” Mr Williams said. “She is highly regarded in government and industry circles across many sectors and is recognised for her commitment to developing industry engagement and partnerships, her deep understanding of regulated industries, and her expertise in affecting organisational change.” Mr Williams said Ms Levy’s appointment comes at an important time for Queensland’s building and construction industry, given current supply-chain issues and increased materials costs, compounded by labour shortages at a time of surging demand. “The QBCC has a vital role to play in making sure that Queenslanders continue to have confidence in the building and construction industry,” Mr Williams said. “Ms Levy will focus on delivering industry certainty, as we continue our drive to be an agile, insightsdriven organisation, while addressing any opportunities for potential improvements to QBCC’s governance arrangements flowing from the governance review led by Mr Jim Varghese AM. “Importantly, Ms Levy’s extensive skills and experience will ensure the QBCC is an effective regulator that can be trusted by Queenslanders.” Ms Levy commenced her role with the QBCC on 14 February 2022. If you have any questions you can contact the QBCC on 139 333. MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022 |

INDUSTRY NEWS
AMENDMENTS TO QBCC REGULATION – PART 26 Amendments to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission Regulation 2021 were made by the Queensland Government on 9 December 2021, which has reduced the scope of work for some licence class holders. There are impacts of these important changes to the scope of work for Part 26: Fire protection–water-based system–install and maintain– commercial and industry licence class. From 31 March 2022, the scope of work for the above class will be restricted unless the licensee holds a relevant Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 (PD Act) licence or other prescribed qualification. For licensees who do not hold the relevant PD Act or prescribed qualifications by this date, the scope of work for this class will be limited to the following: 1. install and maintain fire hydrant systems, with or without pumps; and 2. install and maintain fire hose reels, with or without pumps; and 3. install fire collars if the installation is incidental to the above work. Licensees who transitioned to this class from the former Part 26 sprinkler and suppression systems (reticulated water-based) —install and maintain— restricted to commercial or industrial type licence, are not affected by these changes, and will retain a full scope of work. For company licensees, the scope of work for company licenses will be the same as the scope that applies to their nominee. From 31 March 2022, licensees must ensure they only carry out work within their scope that applies to them.
How to Retain Your Scope of Work To retain the full scope of work from 31 March 2022, licence class holders must hold at least one of the following: • Relevant Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 licenses: Current restricted water plumber—fire protection (commercial and industrial) licence Current plumbers licence with a fire protection – commercial and industrial endorsement Current provisional plumbers licence with a fire protection – commercial and industrial endorsement • Prescribed qualifications: Certificate III in Fire Protection (CPC32813) A technical qualification currently prescribed for the part 26 fire protection—water-based fire system stream—install and J

maintain—restricted to commercial and industrial types licence. This can be a: { Certificate III in Fire Protection (CPC32820), including the below units of competency: F Conduct basic functional testing of water-based firesuppression systems CPCPFS3040; F Conduct functional water flow testing CPCPFS3043; F Read and interpret plans and specifications CPCCBC4012; F Carry out work-based risk control processes CPCPCM4011; F Estimate and cost work CPCPCM4012; F Prepare simple drawings CPCPCM3024; F Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures BSBESB402; F Plan finances for new business ventures BSBESB403; F Research and develop business plans BSBESB401; F Commission fire system pumpsets CPCPFS4023; or F Commission fire sprinkler systems CPCPFS4027. Licensees who continue the full scope of work on the basis they hold the prescribed technical qualifications, should provide a copy of the prescribed qualification to the QBCC as soon as possible (unless the qualification was provided after 1 May 2021, in which case this does not apply).
Please note a PD Act licence is required to personally perform or supervise regulated plumbing work, including the installation and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems. To assist licensees and consumers in identifying which scope of work applies, the QBCC will note licence scope restrictions on the licensee register. Visit the fire protection resources page of the QBCC website for the relevant application forms. No further action will be required by licensees who do hold the PD Act licence unless otherwise contacted by the QBCC directly. For more information, please visit the QBCC website qbcc.qld.gov.au or call them on 139 333.
LEAD IN PLUMBING PRODUCTS IMPLEMENTATION PLAN Plumbing products with a reduced level of lead are coming! You will soon notice increasing numbers of plumbing products containing reduced levels of lead in the marketplace. The 2022 edition of the National Construction Code (NCC) will introduce a new limit for the allowable level of lead in plumbing products used for drinking water. This requirement will come into effect on 1 September 2025. From this date, copper alloy plumbing products containing more than 0.25% lead will no longer be authorised for installation in a plumbing system used to convey drinking water.
What does this mean for the plumbing practitioner? During the transition period between 1 September 2022 and 1 September 2025 plumbing practitioners may continue to install existing products as well as those with a reduced level of lead, providing the products are all certified in accordance with the WaterMark Certification Scheme. However, from 1 September 2025 only products that are compliant with the lead requirements of the NCC will be authorised for use.
Reduction of the lead levels in copper alloy products Clause A5G4 of NCC 2022 Volume Three (Plumbing Code of Australia) will specify that all copper alloy plumbing products in contact with drinking water must limit the allowable lead content of copper alloy plumbing
8
| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
products in contact with drinking water to a weighted average lead content of not more than 0.25%. The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) agreed to a three year transition period to allow industry to make the necessary changes to provide products to the market in compliance with this requirement. The transition period will commence on 1 September 2022.
What products are covered by the NCC’s lead requirement?
All copper alloy products that are in constant contact with drinking water will be required to comply with the lead requirements of the NCC. These include fittings, valves, backflow prevention devices, taps, mixers, water heaters, water dispensers (boiling and cooling units) and water meters. The WaterMark Schedule of Products outlines all plumbing products that require WaterMark certification to be authorised for installation in a plumbing or drainage system. The schedule will also be used to outline which products must comply with the lead requirements of the NCC. During the transition period, products will start to be manufactured with labelling on the product to indicate compliance with the NCC’s lead requirements. This will help you easily identify compliant lead-reduced products. You can read more about the Implementation Plan on the ABCB website by visiting https://abcb.gov.au/resource/lead-plumbingproducts-implementation-plan.
INDUSTRY NEWS
INTERSTATE OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING MPAQ are often asked what the licensing process is for employing someone who is coming from either interstate or from overseas (including New Zealand). Whilst this is something that you can do, there are several factors that must be considered. An important point to remember is individuals cannot perform regulated plumbing work without holding a Queensland licence for that work. They are likewise unable to perform plumbing work under supervision or another person’s licence, they must hold the licence themselves. Drainage work, however, can be performed under direct supervision of a licensed drainer. An apprentice under a traineeship agreement is the only exception to the above; however, they must be directly supervised by a licensee. Under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 and Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997, an individual who holds a licence in one state, territory or New Zealand is entitled to be licensed in another state, territory, or New Zealand to perform the same work. Mutual Recognition does not apply to a company or partnership. The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) may only issue a licence that is equivalent to the licence already held in another jurisdiction. If an interstate or New Zealand licence is subject to a condition or restriction, the QBCC must impose the same condition on the Queensland licence. Where there is no QBCC licence equivalent to an interstate or New Zealand licence, the QBCC will not be able to issue a licence.
Interstate Applicants (including New Zealand)
If you are an interstate or New Zealand plumber and/or drainer and applying for mutual recognition then you will need to complete a Form 28 – Mutual Recognition Application Form which you can search on the QBCC website (qbcc.qld.gov.au). When doing so, a certified copy of the active interstate licence (including both front and back of the licence) should be provided. In Queensland, if you are contracting to carry out plumbing and drainage work, you need two licenses; an occupational licence and a trade contractor licence. If you are applying for a QBCC contractor licence you will need to complete two forms: • The Mutual Recognition Application Form; and • A Form 28 – Mutual Recognition Application Form. If applying for both licenses, there is no fee required in relation to the occupational licence. Applicants from interstate who are unlicensed can have their training recognised in Queensland but will have to meet the Queensland licensing requirements, which can also be found at qbcc.qld.gov.au.
Individuals who do not hold a current licence or have allowed their licence to lapse are unable to use the mutual recognition pathway and must apply for a new licence. If you have any queries regarding international applications for QBCC licence/s, the QBCC can be contacted on 139 333 or +61 7 3842 8700 for overseas callers. Alternately, enquiries can be submitted via the QBCC website: qbcc.qld.gov.au. Enquiries regarding the licence requirements for gas work in Queensland can be directed to the Department of Resources, Health and Safety, who can be contacted on 07 3330 4249 or by email at gaslicence@rshq.qld.gov.au.

International Applicants
Individuals arriving from overseas are more difficult to assess as different countries have different plumbing standards, training, and licensing requirements. Applicants from overseas must present their credentials to a Registered Training Organisation for assessment against the Queensland licensing requirements. Applicants may be required to undertake ‘gap training’ to meet the local requirements prior to being issued a Queensland plumber licence. Under the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018 a person can only perform regulated plumbing and drainage work if they hold a current occupational plumber licence. Employers should also be aware that if they employ an unlicensed person to perform regulated plumbing and drainage work, they too would be in breach of the Plumbing and Drainage Act 2018. Applicants are unable to perform regulated plumbing and drainage work without a current Queensland licence and if already employed can only perform labouring tasks until such time as their QBCC licence is issued. The holder of a provisional licence must be supervised by a licensee.

THE
Hidden Risks OF
UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL CABLES
Following a spate of underground electrical cable contact incidents, the Electrical Safety Office is urging everyone carrying out excavation works to think before you dig because the decisions you make BEFORE starting work could save a life. The electrical risk is ever present, whether you are involved in large scale trenching and construction works, vertical or horizontal boring, simply digging a hole or just driving a star picket into the ground. In addition to personal loss and serious injury, repairs to underground cables and equipment is expensive. Required by law, a person conducting a business or undertaking at a workplace must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that no person, plant or thing at the workplace comes within an unsafe distance of an overhead powerline or underground cable. The best way of avoiding the danger is to establish a safe system of work that involves planning your work in advance, identifying, physically locating and marking the location of underground services, and using safe excavation/digging practices (hydrovac or non-conductive hand tools). Only after all underground assets have been physically located, marked and protected against damage can the excavation proceed with caution. The following steps will help you to safely plan your excavation works. Before excavation starts identify all underground services: • Contact Dial Before You Dig for information about underground essential services at or near where excavation is to be done. Note: this service excludes private property. • Research and comply with your electricity distributor requirements. • Contact the property owner for information on underground services (plans, service types and locations). • Use electronic locating instruments to establish approximate locations. Plans and/or electronic service location cannot be relied upon for physical service locations. Non-mechanical excavation must occur to determine exact locations.
10
| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
• Use advice about underground electrical cables, such as location, type, depth and work restrictions, to excavate safely. • Ensure advice about underground electrical cables is given to anyone else involved. For excavation works: • Visually locate cables by potholing using non-mechanical excavation (hydrovac or non-conductive hand tools) to prove the exact location. • Watch out for warning signs of underground electrical cables such as orange tape, conduits, sand or other markers. • Be aware that underground electrical cables and conduits may not be at the original depth because of changes in ground levels. • If you encounter, or contact, an underground electrical cable, don’t move it. Contact your electricity distributor immediately and follow their advice. • The person with control of the workplace must ensure advice about the location of underground electrical cables is given to all engaged to carry out the excavation. Further information For more information refer to the below codes of practice or contact the relevant provider: • Electrical Safety Code of Practice 2020 – Working near overhead and underground electric lines and the Excavation Work Code of Practice 2021 • Energex – 13 12 53 or custservice@energex.com.au • Ergon Energy – 13 74 66 or safetyadvice@ergon.com.au • Essential Energy – 13 23 91 or public.safety@essentialenergy.com.au • Powerlink – 1800 635 369 • For non-electrical underground services, contact communication companies such as Telstra and Optus, local government authorities and water authorities.

TECHNICAL
MYTHS AND HALFTRUTHS AROUND
CONDENSATION AND MOULD Many will be familiar with the concepts of evaporation and condensation in everyday life. When applied to buildings, however, these principles need greater analysis. This article explores some common misconceptions around condensation and mould.
Myth 1 – New houses will not have condensation Some believe that condensation will not occur in new homes. Unfortunately, this is misguided. In 2014, researchers at the University of Tasmania used detailed monitoring and microbiological sampling to investigate condensation in three newly constructed homes – each of which was undergoing its first winter. In all three homes, significant condensation was discovered. In one, dripping originating from the underside of the low-pitched roof felt like a light drizzle. The study revealed a lack of guidance in the NCC (National Construction Code) around condensation management. In a further study funded by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) in 2016, a survey was sent to building practitioners and received more than 2,000 respondents. This found that condensation was widespread across Australia and that in this aspect our code was decades behind international best practice. Whilst some recommendations from that report were incorporated into NCC 2019, these were initial steps only, which are part of an ongoing work program, they do not, in themselves, prevent condensation and mould entirely.
Myth 2 – A home that is energy-efficient will not be mouldy In 2010, the airtightness of buildings was upgraded amid changes to the NCC, which both increased the stringency of energy efficiency provisions and introduced a new standard for construction in bushfire-prone areas. This was considered beneficial as greater airtightness not only reduced heat loss
12
| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
and delivered better thermal comfort but also helped to prevent cinders from blowing into the building. As this happened, however, copious amounts of condensation emerged in a growing number of homes. The persistent damp, which resulted has led to other problems with mould and its deleterious effects on human health. Largely speaking, this happened because the move toward greater airtightness was not accompanied by an adequate understanding of vapour management. Indeed, the ABCB-funded condensation scoping study found that design decisions around energy efficiency were the primary factors that affected most aspects of new home design. This included risks associated with vapour management, condensation, moisture and mould. That study concluded that there was a need for an integrated approach whereby each step of improvement in energy efficiency was accompanied by suitable measures surrounding vapour control and moisture management.
Myth 3 – There is no harmful mould if you cannot see it In cool climates, condensation is most significant where surfaces are coldest. Often occupants associate condensation with single-glazed windows or thermally unbroken aluminum window frames. However, water vapour is insidious: it can move with air, it can diffuse through air, and it can permeate through porous material. Given that most buildings have materials that contain high-carbon cellulose-based mould food, the addition of water pretty much guarantees mould growth. We often don’t see it only because the action is happening in the interstitial spaces between internal finishes and external cladding. If you do see mould on the walls or ceiling, that’s likely to be the tip of the iceberg. The site of colonisation is in the dark damp interstitial spaces on the reverse side. Many of these spaces are either difficult or unpleasant to access. You are more likely to smell mould before you see it.
TECHNICAL Myth 4 – My new house is built with new materials so it will not be water-damaged Construction material exposure on site is of particular concern during COVID. Due to strong demand and COVID related supply disruptions, there is a shortage of building materials and longer wait times for materials to arrive on site. This is problematic as many materials such as engineered timber, truss nail plates and particleboard flooring are not suitable for prolonged exposure to the elements.
Myth 5 – An owner is without recourse if mould were to be found to be caused by condensation In most circumstances, this statement is mostly correct. Mould that arises from condensation is different from mould arising from other building defects. Mould is explicitly excluded from home and contents insurance. The limitation is that the insurer is only responsible for restoring a building to a prior state prior to a ‘listed event’ covered by the policy. With the right coverage, one could be covered for water ingress from damage to the roof or arising from plumbing leaks. In such cases there will be compensation by the insurer. However, with condensation, it could well be a problem with building design and construction — for which there is no listed event and no prior state to ‘restore’ something to. Mould remediators who are not familiar with identifying condensation causes may temporarily remove the mould, only to have it reappear next winter. The amount of condensation that occurs in buildings can be profuse, amounting to an indoor drizzle. One just has to look in the roof space on a cold morning. In the case of many houses built during the period after 6-star energy efficiency provisions were mandated in 2010, and before condensation provisions were introduced in 2019, raindrops, or more accurately dewdrops, might be falling on your head. Published in 2015, the VBA Guide to Standards and Tolerances, which has been republished in Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland, places responsibility on occupants with this guidance: “Where the requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) have been complied with, the responsibility for controlling condensation by maintaining adequate natural or mechanical ventilation through the use of openable windows, exhaust fans, or other means, is the responsibility of the owner. Condensation is defective if the builder has not complied with the relevant clauses of the BCA.” For further information or to view the full article, visit https://sourceable.net/myths-andhalf-truths-around-condensation-and-mould.

LPW Plumbing & Gas Solutions
LPW Plumbing & Gas Solutions’ work on a smart home in Hawthorne
Protecting tomorrow With World Earth Day on 22 April, we look at how Queensland plumbing and gas businesses can do their bit to protect tomorrow, today. A growing number of organisations are integrating sustainability into their business strategy—realising they can do well by doing good. Queensland plumbing and gas businesses have been showcasing this through award winning projects, many of which were celebrated at the 2021 Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards. Accuplumb won the 2021 QLeave Commercial and Industrial Technical Award for the install of a specified vacuum drainage system at Spicers Eco Camps. The project design requirements included limited water usage for all amenities as the site generated its own power and water supplies due to its remote location. The site location was rugged and challenging Accuplumb and required innovative sanitary solutions that used little water because of the environmental limitations. This project

required Accuplumb to employ multiple innovations in plumbing and focus on sustainability and the environment. LPW Plumbing & Gas Solutions won the 2021 Domestic and Residential Technical Award when they undertook the plumbing work at a domestic residence in Hawthorne, designed by Renee Dunn Architects, that resulted in a large scale, high end smart home that operates efficiently and effectively. Requiring the finest level of attention to detail and execution across all aspects of plumbing, drainage and gas, LPW Plumbing and Gas delivered an innovative sanitary drainage pumpwell and pump to overcome non favourable access to gravity feed, a 1,500L stormwater pump station, 6-star gas continuous flow hot water units throughout and a commercial gas meter to accommodate high gas loading. Origin Energy was engaged to upgrade the burners and control system at the Australian Professional Galvanisers facility in Stuart, Townsville, which won them the 2021 Elgas Gas Project of the Year. This project included installing, adapting, and commissioning the entire combustion and control system for a new galvanising kettle. The combustion system is the first of its kind in Australia and is more efficient than existing designs, maximising the kettle life from a current 10-year lifespan to 15 years. The 2021 AHSCA Hydraulic Consultant Design of the Year recipient was MRP Hydraulic & Fire Services Consultants Pty Ltd for their work on the Ipswich Civic Centre Precinct. Ipswich Civic Centre Precinct is a purpose designed council office building and council chambers with an integrated, environmentally rated development with both a 5 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS rating. This once-in-a generation redevelopment has been a longterm vision for Ipswich City Council that incorporates the areas surrounding this building and provides a thriving new area for the community with a cultural precinct that is described as ‘the new city heart’. In addition to the environmental design targets, this project also included natural disaster mitigation to ensure suitable long-term accommodation for the council and other government agencies during and after natural disasters.

What Does Sustainability Mean in Business? In business, sustainability refers to doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or society as a whole. Sustainability in business generally addresses two main categories: • The effect business has on the environment • The effect business has on society The goal of a sustainable business strategy is to make a positive impact on at least one of those areas. When companies fail to assume responsibility, the opposite can happen, leading to issues like environmental degradation, inequality, and social injustice. Sustainable businesses consider a wide array of environmental, economic, and social factors when making business decisions. These organisations monitor the impact of their operations to ensure that shortterm profits don’t turn into long-term liabilities1.
Why is Sustainability Important? The theme this World Earth Day is “Invest in Our Planet”. Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, our livelihoods... together, we must invest in our planet because a green future is a prosperous future2. In addition to driving social and environmental change, sustainability initiatives can contribute to an organisation’s overall success. It may seem counterintuitive that spending more money on sustainable business practices can boost a company’s profitability, but studies show that the most sustainable companies are also the most profitable. While sustainability strategies might be an investment in the short term, they can lead to longterm benefits3.
How can the Plumbing Industry Contribute to Sustainability? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Relying on renewable energy sources to power facilities Reducing water waste and stopping leaks Using quality products Using sustainable materials in the manufacturing process Installing solar hot water systems Optimising supply chains to reduce greenhouse gas emissions Installing rainwater tanks to reuse and recycle water Utilise industry recycling initiatives

CONSTRUCTION PLASTICS RECYCLING SCHEME In November 2021, Master Plumbers’ Association Queensland (MPAQ) and Plastics Industry Pipe Association of Australia (PIPA), in conjunction with Vinidex, Iplex, Tradelink, and Reece, with support from the Queensland Government, joined forces to launch the Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme pilot to contribute to a responsible and sustainable future. The Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme is working collaboratively with industry over a six-month period, with collection bins located on multiple sites, providing alternative outlets for PVC off-cuts to be discarded. The off-cuts collected in these bins over this period will be audited and the data recorded to understand the volume of available PVC off-cuts. The bins are currently located on the following sites: • Brisbane Queens Wharf Development (Towers 1 and 2) • Gold Coast Star Casino Development • Woolloongabba Tradelink Store • Labrador Reece Plumbing Store • Beenleigh Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre • Prominence Outlook Pallara • Caboolture Hospital Redevelopment
WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE MY SMALL BUSINESS MORE SUSTAINABLE? There are many ways to make your business more sustainable. Below are some top tips for your small business 4.

Despite getting off to a slow start due to wet weather at the end of 2021 and the holiday season, the Scheme has started to take off in the last couple of months, and it’s seen some positive signs with full bins being collected from most sites. Reece and Tradelink have reported positive feedback from customers visiting their stores, which is expected to increase as more companies become aware of the Scheme. If you would like more information about the Construction Plastics Recycling Scheme, visit www.mpaq.com.au/pvc or call 07 3273 0800.

Reduce meeting costs: make a phone call instead of holding a meeting, send an email rather than posting, conduct virtual meetings to save the cost of making business trips. Minimise using materials: archive computer files rather than print files, advertise on your website rather than in brochures, email your promotional material rather than posting it. Reduce waste: re-use old envelopes, have staff use their own mugs, get printer cartridges refilled not replaced and buy recycled stationery supplies. Recycle it: recycle everything you can’t reuse – check with the council what they will recycle. Set up recycling bins in locations staff will use them. Turn it off: switch off lights, computers, printers, and appliances at the power point when not in use – they will last longer, and your power bills will be considerably reduced. Outsource it: reduce your server needs and cut power costs by using cloud computing services (web-based data storage) and use virtual office services or outside contractors rather than expanding office space. Reduce it: turn down the air conditioner – lowering the temperature just one degree on a hot day can increase your energy costs by 10 per cent. Reduce energy consumption further by using cut-out switches to cut out standby power usage, installing automatic lighting sensors, having power supplied by green energy providers or choosing hybrid cars for your fleet vehicles. In the office kitchen, reduce water and power consumption by running office dishwashers when full, fixing leaky taps and reducing the hot-water temperature setting. Buy green: get some green credentials by setting up a sustainable supply policy and guidelines and send a checklist to your suppliers asking about their sustainable products and services. Ask printers for recycled paper, replace defunct equipment with high-energy efficiency models with a long shelf life.

Rheem Australia is encouraging Australian apprentice plumbers and gas fitters to apply for a share of $30,000 in grants available from the 2022 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants scheme. Ten deserving apprentice plumbers from around the country will be rewarded with a grant of $3,000 to support the progression of their study and help launch their plumbing career. Now in its tenth year, the Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants program was established to relieve the financial stress felt by many apprentice plumbers, to invest in the skills of future plumbers, and to assist the completion of their courses. “This year marks a decade since we launched our Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants program back in 2012, and we’re proud to have awarded more than $300,000 in grants to apprentice plumbers around Australia,” says Chris Taylor, Rheem’s Managing Director, ANZ. “At Rheem, we’re engaged with, and dedicated to, the plumbing community and our contribution doesn’t stop with products and innovation. One of the most valuable ways we can support the future of our industry is by championing the education and training of Australia’s next generation of plumbers,” adds Taylor. Grant recipients will receive $2,000 to assist with their TAFE/ RTO fees and textbooks, and $1,000 to help apprentices build their essential trade toolbox. “Through our strong relationship with tradespeople around the country, we continue to see that the greatest financial difficulties facing apprentices stem from tuition and tool costs,” Mr Taylor adds. “Rheem’s success can be largely attributed to the ongoing support we have received from the plumbing community over the last 80 years. The grant scheme allows us to say thank you by supporting and inspiring the next generation of plumbers through targeted financial assistance where they need it the most. It also opens doors to further study, such as continuing the optional fourth year where apprentices can earn their tradesman’s licence and turn their dreams of operating their own business into a reality,” he says. Applications for the 2022 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants program are open now, and close at 11:59pm on Friday 8 April 2022. Successful grant recipients will be announced in May 2022. Applicants must submit the completed form via the website at www.rheem.com.au/apprentice. Any questions regarding the application process should be emailed to rheemgrants@impactagency.com.au.

As we enter the second year of managing COVID-19 in the workplace, many businesses are seeing an increase in employee absenteeism relating to mental health. Many professionals are putting this down to ongoing change fatigue with the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ forever being extended further and further out of reach.

To combat this, several businesses are now implementing workplace wellness ideas to work with their employees and try to prevent some of the issues whilst they are small and manageable before resulting in employee absences for short or extended periods of time. The thinking behind workplace wellness is more of a committed communication channel where employees can simply have a catch up with their boss or supervisor either one on one or in a group setting and just talk or unwind about the week that was or the week ahead. Many businesses have found by implementing a weekly group catch up and then the boss or supervisor being committed to having a one on one catch up with each employee, that issues are reduced as the employee can be guided on a way forward of how to tackle a particular job or confront a situation that was bothering them. This is not to say that the boss or supervisor must be the counsellor, more that they are an open ear for the employee to discuss some things playing on their mind. If the issue or situation is bigger than what the boss or supervisor feels comfortable with discussing, a great resource is Mates in Construction, which is a free counselling service for the building and construction industry. Their phone number is 1300 642 111. We are all managing COVID-19 in different ways and the key takeaway from studies that have been undertaken is to talk about it. Keeping it internal is not the solution. For further information, please contact the MPAQ HR team on 07 3273 0800.

SORT YOUR EMPLOYMENT PAPERWORK FOR THE COMING YEAR Now more than ever with the opening of Queensland’s borders and the increase in COVID-19 cases, it is important to ensure you have your employment paperwork sorted for the year ahead. We always suggest that every employee should have an employment contract, which is defined as a signed agreement between an employer and employee that sets out the terms and conditions of employment. The main areas that are important to be included in these contracts are: • A date of employment commencement • Employment type – casual, part-time, full-time or fixed term • Position, duties, and accountabilities • Probation periods • Hours of work including reasonable additional hours and spread of hours • Remuneration either hourly or if an annual salary • Confidential information • Intellectual property details • Reference to company policies and procedures • Dispute resolution process • Performance appraisal and performance management process • Grounds for suspension and termination including notice • Post-employment limitations or constraints In addition to an employment contract, the company should also have policies and procedures in place which sit alongside the employment contract and form part of the terms of employment. Workplace policies
outline what is and isn’t acceptable workplace behaviour and should clearly state what the consequences are of noncompliance. Some suggested policies to include (but are not limited to): • Code of conduct • Confidentiality agreement • Internet and e-mail policy • Mobile phone policy • Drug and alcohol policy • Workplace Health and Safety policy • Anti-discrimination, harassment and bullying policy • Grievance handling policy • Performance management and termination policy • Use of social media policy • Uniform policy MPAQ has employment contracts available for purchase for our members and as part of the package, we also include suggested example policies. Please contact the HR team on 07 327 0800 or email hr@mpaq.com.au for further information.

WORLD PLUMBING DAY
PLUMBING AMBASSADORS APPOINTED ON WORLD PLUMBING DAY TO
INSPIRE FUTURE S E I D A R T On Friday 11 March, Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) revealed the 2022 Queensland Plumbing Ambassadors: Brett McIlvride – PRP Services, Stephen Morton – Morton Plumbing NQ, Ben Byrne – CQ Relining, Damian Connor – Evermore Plumbing & Gas, and Natalie Denning – Fallon Solutions. The announcement was made in front of over 300 attendees at the World Plumbing Day Industry Breakfast, which was held at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. World Plumbing Day is celebrated on 11 March every year, everywhere and is now a fixture on the calendars of political and social institutions around the globe. World Plumbing Day aims to spread awareness of the importance of plumbing and plumbers in protecting public health, as well as celebrating all the important work plumbers have done to improve the world. The plumbing community has a vital role in promoting the link between good quality plumbing, health, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity. MPAQ Executive Director, Penny Cornah, said “this is an important opportunity for the whole community to appreciate the hard work performed by members of our industry.” “Queensland plumbers are experts in their field, who deliver the highest standards in health and safety throughout the world,” said Ms Cornah. “While we should celebrate the industry and those who play an important part in it, World Plumbing Day also allows us to reflect on the future of our industry, and ensuring that we see a diverse, engaged, and skilled future workforce is essential to that.” The ambassadors were chosen to represent MPAQ and promote this important trade to school students and career-seekers across the state, focussing on raising awareness to students about studying an apprenticeship and explaining where a trade can take them both professionally and personally. The ambassadors will also be focussed on engaging with business owners to grow the number of opportunities available to those seeking a plumbing apprenticeship. “I would like to congratulate this year’s ambassadors and thank them for giving up their time to help us develop the future of our industry. I look forward to working with them,” said Ms Cornah.

About the Ambassadors Brett McIlvride is a licensed plumber, drainer, gas fitter, and owner of PRP Services in Brisbane. Beginning his career in New South Wales, Brett has been in the industry for over 25 years and loves sharing his knowledge and passion for the trade with others. Brett said, “I want the plumbers of tomorrow to be well rounded, and I want to be able to show that everyone in the industry benefits from knowing all facets of the trade.” “There is so much more to the trade that can be inspirational to the younger generation. I want to promote the plumbing industry and the trade as being more than just a guy that can sort out your blocked toilet,” he said. Stephen Morton, a licensed plumber, drainer, and gas fitter, is the Business Operations Manager for Morton Plumbing in North Queensland. With plumbing in his blood, Stephen started his plumbing career over 32 years ago working in his family’s business. Stephen said, “I want to show people where a career in plumbing can take you; it can expand in many avenues and even take you overseas.” Stephen has taken his passion for plumbing and developed his skills across a wide range of areas, including working for regional councils, major mining operations, and even in Papua New Guinea, before recently returning to the family business to train the next generation of family plumbers with his brother, Ben Morton. Stephen will focus on the North Queensland region as one of MPAQ’s regional ambassadors. Ben Byrne is a licensed plumber, drainer, gas fitter, and owner of CQ Relining Pty Ltd in Yeppoon. Ben developed his passion for the industry working in a Reece Plumbing store before being taken on as an apprentice by a customer. Ben said, “I’ve been in the industry for 20 years now and my business is at the stage where I have the time to give back to the industry, something that I’ve always wanted to do.” “I see the Ambassador program as a chance to ‘share the love’, promote the industry, and guide the next generation of plumbers into their careers,” he said. Ben will focus on the Central Queensland region as one of MPAQ’s regional ambassadors. Damian Connor is a licensed plumber, drainer, gas fitter, and owner of Evermore Plumbing & Gas Pty Ltd in Ferny Hills. As a school leaver, Damian was faced with a parental ultimatum to either head to university or take up a trade. He knew he could thrive outside of a classroom, so went down the trade route and has never looked back. Damian said, “there is a serious skills shortage in our industry and too many great people are pushed towards university when it’s not always the best fit.”
“I want to impart my knowledge and promote plumbing to get more future plumbers into apprenticeships,” he said. Natalie Denning is the HR Director and Owner of Fallon Solutions in Mansfield and has been involved in the plumbing industry for over 17 years. As an employer and parent, Natalie has seen firsthand the types of workers that it takes to become a great plumber. Natalie said, “I have an interest in supporting more high school students to actively choose a technical trade vocation to support an industry that is in increasingly short supply.” “I believe there is a disproportionate skew towards tertiary education where a trade may be the better choice for many students actually illsuited to academic study and the associated work derived from degree qualifications,” she said. “I am also interested in working with the relevant apprenticeship agencies to ensure apprenticeships are full bodied enough in content to ensure tradespeople exit their apprenticeship enabled to fully engage in the technical trade they are then qualified in.”
“I see the Ambassador program as a chance to ‘share the love’, promote the industry, and guide the next generation of plumbers into their careers,”

About World Plumbing Day and Plumbers World Plumbing Day is an international event on 11 March initiated by the World Plumbing Council. World Plumbing Day seeks to highlight the vital role that plumbers play in maintaining and protecting the health and safety of the community through the provision of clean drinking water and the appropriate management of waste. The plumbing industry makes an extraordinary contribution to human health, the environment and prosperity; however, it is minimally recognised. In recent years, we have seen an increase in awareness of water and energy usage, and the plumbing industry is proactive in promoting the accurate and timely management of water supplies. Population growth coupled with an increase in urbanisation reveals that management of water supplies and waste water services is of paramount importance in Australia. Plumbing plays one of the most vital roles in managing the health and safety of the local community, as well as the wider community. It is for this reason that it is so import that plumbers are publicly recognised for their hard work and long studied skills. BUSINESS
HOW NOT TO JINX 2022 If you’ve found yourself humming the ‘Friends’ theme song “It hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year,” you are not alone. As business owners, we’ve battled through mental fatigue, sky-high workloads, changing Government regulations, and separation from friends and family. No one can say we’ve made it through unscathed, and as we face another year ahead, our spirits are bruised. To keep our optimism aflame in 2020, we chanted, “we’ve just got to push through, and things will be better in a few months.” Then in 2021, we chorused, “things will be back to normal this year; this will be our year.” However, neither sentiments were particularly fruitful and potentially had more of a jinxing effect. So perhaps in 2022, it’s time to change our slogan to something more realistic; we need to reignite our passions, get fired up, and, more importantly, come together as a community and lean on each other for support. To put you in the mindset to achieve success this year, our podcast, The Tradie Show — Together In Trade Business, called on three-time World Champion Athlete, Dave Tabain. He shares the ultra-focused mindset techniques that allowed him to take home so many world titles and how trade business owners can adopt the same methods within their personal lives and their business. As a reminder: to reach success as a trade business owner, not only do you need to be in the right headspace, but you also need to put thoughts into action. It’s all well and good to know what you want, but the hard part is mapping out how you will get there. Creating a written business plan and setting a list of goals is the first step. If your knee jerk reaction was to seethe; “But
I know where I want the business to go, why do I have to waste my time by writing it down?” the simple truth is that by getting the business direction out of your head and onto a page, you can now share it with others. Good ideas can come from anyone, so by sharing your vision for the business and your steps to achieve success with others, you may find that your team or partner might have solutions you haven’t thought of! This allows them to be part of your business cultivation, but it also lets them feel like their opinions have been heard and taken seriously. Occasionally, we forget that the burden of success doesn’t have to reside on our shoulders solely. Creating a solid support system of likeminded individuals who wish success for your business is truly the smart way to operate. In truth, this year will not be without its challenges. With our mental reserves at an all-time low, now is truly the time to rally those around you, adopt a can-do mindset, share your vision, create a support system, and set yourself up for success by taking real-world actions! 10 HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

THINGS TO KNOW IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO
START EXERCISING It’s never too early or late to reap the rewards of becoming more physically active. So you’ve decided it’s time you did some exercise. But…where do you begin? Sometimes it can be daunting to know how to start. Below is a guide to getting active, to help you develop a healthier, happier lifestyle.
How much exercise should you actually be doing?
First things first, how much exercise do you really need to be doing? Just like diet and nutrition advice, there are a lot of fitness programs out there claiming to be the ‘one and only’ exercise you need to do to be healthy and fit. Some require 10 minutes a day, others are strict two hours per day regimes. So how much exercise should you actually be aiming for? According to the Australian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines, adults aged 18-64 should try to be active for at least half an hour on most, preferably all, days of the week. Ideally, an adult should either do between 2 ½ hours and 5 hours of moderate intensity activity each week, 1 ¼ hours to 2 ½ hours of vigorous intensity each week, or a combination of the two.

Know your goals
There are so many reasons to make being active a priority: improved cardiovascular health, maintaining a healthy weight, decreased risk of some cancers and improved mental health, just to name a few. You might have a specific goal in mind when you start exercising, like losing a few kilos, improving your balance, or being able to enter a fun run. Or you might just be trying to become more active because you know it’s a good thing to do for your overall health. Either way, check in from time to time to see how you’re improving and feeling. Make a note of whether you can walk further and faster this month than last, if you’ve lost centimetres off your belly, are feeling happier or sleeping better.
Start slowly
Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. The guidelines listed above are a great goal, but not everyone at the beginning of their exercise journey will be able to meet them straight away. Start slowly; find out what kinds of exercise you enjoy, how you feel when you exercise and how being active can fit into your routine. A 10-minute walk around the block or following an exercise video at home a couple of times a week might be a simple start. Gradually, you can build up to meeting the recommended guidelines.
Make it part of your routine
When exercise is part of your daily routine, getting up and active becomes second nature. Book exercise time on your calendar or use an exercise planner to block out time to be active each week. You might find linking exercise to a different activity you do regularly helps it easily slot into your schedule. For example, if you meet a friend for coffee each Saturday, suggest the two of you go for a walk together first, or take a class during your lunchbreak at work.

5
Find a form you enjoy
You’ll be more likely to stick with your new activity plan if you find the time you spend moving enjoyable. For you, that might mean attending a class with friends, or it could be pushing yourself to the limit with a personal trainer. Keep in mind that different things motivate different people, and there’s no one right way to be active. There are so many options when it comes to exercising. From running and cycling, to taking a dance class or stand-up paddle boarding, there are activities for all types of interests and abilities. You don’t have to stick with the first activity you try or do what everyone else is doing. Have fun exploring what kinds of exercise make you feel good.
6
Different forms of exercise do different things for your body, so it’s important to do a range of types of exercise. Cardio exercise is exercise that gets your heart rate up. Cardio is good for your heart health and also burns kilojoules at a high rate, which can help you lose excess weight or maintain a healthy weight. Muscle strengthening exercise does what it says in the name: makes your muscles stronger. It also helps build and maintain bone mass, which is important for preventing diseases like osteoporosis as you age. Muscle strengthening exercise might involve lifting weights, supporting your body weight or resistance exercises. The Physical Activity Guidelines recommend adults should do muscle strengthening activities at least twice a week. Flexibility is important, especially as you age. Take time to stretch before and after each exercise session to improve flexibility and reduce the risk of injuries.
HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
7
Make your everyday active
Exercise is only one form of physical activity – you do a lot of physical activity throughout the day that you might not “count” as exercise, but that still contributes to your overall activity levels. Keep in mind that you don’t have to be active only during times you’ve allotted for exercise. Challenge yourself to get moving throughout the day at times you would otherwise be sitting still. Take the stairs instead of lifts, volunteer to go on the office coffee run instead of having your drink brought to you or walk or ride to close-by destinations.
Input can be as important as output
8
What you eat and drink can help you achieve results from exercise more easily and help you to stay healthy and well. Match your new exercise routine with a well-balanced, nutritious diet, and make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise to stay hydrated.
9
You don’t need fancy equipment or clothes
The fitness industry makes a lot of money from selling clothes and equipment to people wanting to exercise. But exercise doesn’t have to be expensive, and you don’t need to buy special clothing, equipment or pay for memberships if you don’t want to. Clothing should be something you feel comfortable in and can move in easily. For high impact exercise, like running or playing tennis, a well-fitting sports shoe is recommended to prevent injuries. Some types of equipment can be substituted, like cans of food instead of hand weights, or you can buy second-hand equipment for a fraction of the cost. You don’t need the flashiest bike on the path to be getting the benefits. Some people find that dedicating part of their budget to exercise motivates them to stick at it, but if that’s not for you, know that working out for free is totally possible.
Remember to seek help when needed
10
If you’ve been inactive for a long time, have a heart condition or other health condition that might impact your ability to exercise, or you’ve got any concerns about becoming more active, talk to your GP about the best and safest way to begin exercising. Exercising can feel tough at the time, and you might have a few sore muscles the day after a workout, but if you feel any pain that concerns you or won’t go away, see your GP or a physiotherapist for advice.

PLUMBERS TRENCH ANGLE GUIDE Trenching and drainage is in! This task is one that all plumbers do not like and try to avoid. And rightly so when agonising back pain is almost a guarantee with every trench you have to dig. This was the main reason why the Plumbers Trench Angle Guide was thought up. The Plumbers Trench Angle Guide keeps you in the upright position, which reduces the strain on your lower back muscles. No more having to spend potentially hours continuously bent over in awkward positions. We’re trending to stop the bending! In these days of work smarter not harder, we know the Plumbers Trench Angle Guide is and will help make the job easier. The plumbing excavation space seriously educated us on how the trenching processes are completed and how the 2M model fits perfectly. Operators tend to cut two meters, check the gradient, cut the meters again, and then continue this process over and over. Instead, you can drop the Plumbers Trench Angle Guide into the trench, check the bubble level and move on. Handy as bro! If you haven’t already seen the Plumbers Trench Angle Guide, check us out! • Ideal for fall angle setting • Set your desired gradient • Built tough • Level bubble check Easy to set up, easy to use, easy to disassemble Check out plumberstrenchguide.com for further information.

AUSSIE’S CLASS A JETTER No Certification Required!
INSINKERATOR’S EVOLUTION SERIES InSinkErator’s food waste disposers are the ideal solution for managing food waste in homes. The process is simple – food scraps are swept into the sink and with the touch of a button and turn of a tap, they are ground and flushed through the plumbing to a wastewater treatment plant. At appropriate wastewater treatment plants, methane gas is captured and recycled into renewable energy as well, which is great for the environment. InSinkErator’s Evolution Series are quieter than ever before and powerful enough to grind most food scrap types, including some bones, prawns’ heads, and fish heads. They are easy and quick to install. Installing an InSinkErator Food Waste Disposer is simple with the “twist-on, twist-off” sink mount feature. The average install time is 60 to 90 minutes based on a standard plumbing set up. They are also applicable for retrofitting or new builds. Visit insinkerator.com.au for further information.
20 years ago, Australian Pump Industries produced the first prototype high pressure jetting machine that had the real capability to clear blocked drains. “It was plumbers who saw those big 4,000 psi Aussie Ultra pressure cleaners at work that lead to them asking us, could they be turned into high pressure drain cleaners?”, said Aussie Pumps Chief Engineer, John Hales. “It was a revelation. We learnt from plumbers with jobs that could take up to six hours to clear with an Eel, hampered by their limited range, could now be done in a matter of minutes.” Aussie’s Cube was a breakthrough design.
“The Class A machines are exceptionally capable, with their flow and pressure complying with the Safety Standards. Operators don’t need to be certified,” said Hales. Today Australian Pump Industries exports all over the world and continues to grow as word about their innovative approach and the efficiency of the equipment spreads. Check out aussiepumps.com.au for further information or call 02 8865 3500.

INTRODUCING OUR 2022 CHARITY PARTNER Throughout 2022, MPAQ will be raising funds to support MATES in Construction at all of our events. MATES in Construction was established in 2008 in response to a major report on suicide (the ‘AISRAP Report’) within the Queensland Commercial Building and Construction Industry. This report found that suicide rates in the industry were higher than the Australian average for men, and that youth suicide within the industry could be as much as 2.38 times more common than among other young Australian men. MATES provides suicide prevention through community development programs on sites, and by supporting workers in need through case management and a 24/7 help line. Visit www.mates.org.au to find out more.

MEMBER NEWS
AFT & AF CHAPMAN PLUMBING CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP Allen and Anne Chapman in Far North Queensland founded AFT & AF Chapman Plumbing in 1968 when they started subcontracting to JR Wyllie & Sons. They then started plumbing for new homes and had a breakthrough for their Allen Chapman, AFT & business when they did Ballantyne AF Chapman Plumbing being Homes and the business grew to have presented his membership milestone by Division eight employees. They later went into Chairman, Roy Walker maintenance and eventually Mark Chapman took over most of the work as Allen wound down and did small jobs with taps and toilets. The company, now owned and run by Mark, specialises in new housing, renovations, water reruns, AES enviro septic systems and general plumbing. Major highlights of the business for Allen have been their ability to employ and train many tradespeople and labourers, as well as train about 10 apprentices. Completing the plumbing on First City Caravan Park was also a highlight, as well as purchasing new technology to improve their services such as a camera inspection system and a mini excavator. Allen feels the industry has changed over the years with new regulations, the refinement of techniques and the way plumbing is installed, as well as new advanced plumbing fittings and products that make the work more efficient. Allen was presented with a meritorious service award from MPAQ in September 2001 and is proud to reach 50 years of membership with MPAQ. He has gained the most value from his membership through the information MPAQ provides with changes to regulations and licence requirements through the QBCC, as well as the legal and technical assistance he receives. Congratulations to AFT & AF Chapman Plumbing for reaching such a significant membership milestone!
25 YEARS OF MEMBERSHIP FOR VICTOR CROSS Written by Victor Cross
I took out membership with the Master Plumbers’ Association of Qld (MPAQ) when I ran my own plumbing company and then spent several years with the local council as a Plumbing Inspector before entering the Hydraulic Engineering discipline. As the Managing Director of CWA Building Hydraulic & Fire Services Victor Cross with (Chilton Woodward & Associates) I his son, William have witnessed large changes within the plumbing industry over the last 25 years. Some of the major innovations within our industry in recent years are the Express Stack System, push fit plastic piping, Viega crimped copper pipe systems, instantaneous electric hot water units, eco friendly toilets and urinals to where we even have waterless urinals. Although this 25 year membership milestone certificate is made out to myself, I could not have made it this far without my staff at CWA. Although we are only a small office with eight employees, we have completed numerous projects from 35 storey unit blocks to complete shopping centres, state schools right down to some million-dollar homes. With some of these projects mentioned we have been fortunate to win the AHSCA Hydraulic Design Award of the Year at MPAQ’s Plumbing and Gas Industry Awards three times, which is a testimony to my staff and the effort they put in. I’d like to encourage MPAQ to keep up the good work they are doing within the industry as it gives the plumbing trade a much stronger voice within the workplace. I’d like to say thank you to MPAQ for their support to both myself, my company and the plumbing industry in general over the last 25 years. Congratulations Victor and thank you for your support!
DOYEN OF THE PLUMBING INDUSTRY RETIRES When a young bloke with the unique name of Dallas was threading gal pipe as an apprentice to Melbourne plumbing company Leighton Contractors in 1973, he would have never imagined he would be instrumental in helping transform the Australian plumbing industry. The introduction of high density poly ethylene (HDPE) as an alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) for trade waste and drainage applications and changing the way multistorey stacks are designed and installed are just two examples Dallas Collins can proudly hang his hat on after an illustrious 49-year plumbing career. Throughout his time Dallas experienced all aspects of plumbing from civil, commercial, multistorey, mechanical plumbing and domestic housing. Dallas reminisces about many of the changes he witnessed in the industry including the introduction of subcontractors, PVC systems, the demise of galvanised piping and earthenware drainage and the end of copper stacks in high rise. Always willing to embrace change and innovation, Dallas jumped the fence and spent the second half of his career working with manufactures and merchants. On behalf of Reece and multinational Geberit, he played a key role in introducing and educating the Australian market on HDPE pipe and fittings for trade waste. This included stints at the Geberit factories in Switzerland and Singapore where he was exposed to the design and installation principles of the reduced velocity aerated stack system (RVASS).

| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
Bringing the RVASS system back to Australia has revolutionised the way designers and installers approach the installation of stacks and elevated drainage in multistorey applications His experience with RVASS naturally led him into the world of siphonic stormwater systems for commercial installations before being lured by local Queensland manufacturer, Plastec, to work on a PVC made aerated stack system. Dallas Collins, Plastec Dallas was instrumental in the design, testing and specification of a unique PVC product, the Stack Diverter, that has again changed the way the industry approaches RVASS installations and elevated drainage design principles, saving time, space and money. Dallas can now proudly reflect on a colourful and rewarding career in the plumbing industry and we wish him all the best in retirement as he hooks up the van for some well-earned travels. MPAQ would like to wish Dallas well on his retirement and thank him for his contributions to the industry.
