| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE May/June 2020

Editor’s Note Welcome to the May/June edition of the Master Plumber Magazine! What a couple of months it has been! In the time between the last edition and this one, it feels as though the whole world has gone through a real-life version of a Hollywood thriller movie. Is anyone else waiting for Tom Cruise or the Avengers to save us with a last-minute cure so the credits can finally roll on COVID-19? In all seriousness though, it has been a tough few months for many plumbing and gas businesses and it’s likely that we’ll all be living with the consequences of COVID-19 for quite some time, so I want to remind you that MPAQ is here to support you in any way we can, with regular email communications and website updates. We also have a team of professionals on hand to give our members the guidance you need. While there is a vast amount of information that we could share in this edition of the magazine about COVID-19 specifically, the advice generally dates so quickly that we have avoided publishing anything too specific here. Instead, I would encourage you to visit the COVID-19 portal on our website (www.mpaq.com.au) to get the most current information. In saying that though, with so much of our lives being taken up by the pandemic, it has definitely influenced the content of this edition. We have tried to provide

you with articles that will help your business survive, and hopefully thrive, as we enter the recovery stage. Now more than ever, a focus on technology seems important, with so many having to embrace new ways of doing business, so I hope you find some useful information that will help you through this time. Congratulations to all members reaching milestones in this edition, and a warm welcome to our newest members. Happy Reading!

EXECUTIVE

PERSPECTIVE 2020 is proving to be a challenging year for all Australians. The World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 as a pandemic. At the time of writing this article there were over 6,600 cases of COVID-19 in Australia. Over the last couple of months COVID-19 has impacted the lives and livelihoods of many Australians, and I want to assure you that my team and I are working hard to represent and support our members, as well as the Penny Cornah, Executive Director wider plumbing and gas industry, so that we can all make it through this pandemic together. In order for us to have a clear understanding of how different areas of the plumbing and gas industry have been affected, in April MPAQ circulated a survey to all members to understand the impact that COVID-19 has had on their businesses. A brief overview of the survey results are on page 8, but if you would like to see the full report, please email events@mpaq.com.au to request your copy. Thank you to all members who filled in the survey. This helps to ensure we are advocating at all levels so that we can provide the necessary support and resources to help you through this.

MPAQ has also created an online COVID-19 Awareness course for our industry. This course has been designed for plumbers and gasfitters to further their knowledge about the safety requirements needed on a day to day basis within their role. The course provides students with a broad knowledge of the physical requirements and provide practical advice for control of the COVID-19 virus. It is free for members and their employees to undertake, and more details can be found on the training section of our website. COVID-19 and the uncertainty that comes with it, may have an impact on your mental health and your employee’s mental health. During this crisis people might experience feelings of anxiety, stress, fear, uncertainty and depression. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to: • MATES in Construction - 1300 642 111 • Lifeline - 13 11 14 • Beyond Blue - 1300 224 636 Right now is a great opportunity to utilise your membership with MPAQ, as we have extensive resources available on our website to assist you during this time. The resources include fact sheets, policies, webinar recordings and frequently asked questions and answers. COVID-19 has brought about a lot of changes and uncertainty, but I want to reassure you that my team and I are advocating with government for our members and the industry as a whole. To contact me please call 07 3273 0800 or email penny.cornah@mpaq.com.au. Please stay safe.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE COVID-19 Forces us to Embrace Technology It only seems like a couple of years ago when we were all waiting for the clock to hit midnight on 31 December 1999 and for the world as we knew it to crash and burn. The new century was going to see a worldwide failure of computer systems and planes were going to fall from the sky. Twenty years later we know that none of these things happened, and we Kent Vickers, President are more reliant now than ever before on technology. The COVID 19 pandemic has forced us to embrace technology. The need to meet face to face is almost a thing of the past. The construction industry has embraced technology like never before. Many businesses are issuing tablets to organise their schedules and enable a better, more efficient working day. The freedom and availability of information that we all have access to on our portable devices is something that we rely on and it allows us to maximise the productivity in our working day. From the comfort of our ute we can now order materials, issue a Form 4, invoice the customer, and collect the payment. We can ask the GPS to take us to our next job and even check the bank balance. All these technologies are designed to streamline our businesses and to credit us with more free time to spend with our families; unfortunately, this is not always the case.

6

| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE May/June 2020

Technology in our industry has raced ahead in other areas too. The cost of energy over the past 20 years has skyrocketed, and this has encouraged the lateral thinkers to look outside of the square. The use of biogas as a fuel has been developed to the point where some companies have cut their energy costs by $60,000 per month simply by investing in the technology to use the waste energy generated by their normal daily operations. Another emerging technology is hydrogen. Hydrogen has been around for many years but has never been considered a viable energy source purely because of its reputation to explode (I think of the Hindenburg). Hydrogen has a chemical makeup that does not lend itself to be recognised as a risk-free fuel gas for use by the general public. However, if it is used to supplement our current natural gas reticulated networks, then it becomes a very attractive option. As recently as five years ago, hydrogen was still considered the poor cousin in the fuel gas stable. The stigma associated with its use was sketchy at best. As a plumber and gas fitter, I am delighted that the world has invested millions of dollars in research and development to use this valuable and renewable resource. Australia has several pilot programs dotted across the country, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before it is introduced into our natural gas networks and developed for use as fuel cell for industry. MPAQ is actively representing all our members at all levels of government, and I can assure you that our members and the Queensland plumbing and gas industry are in good hands. Please stay safe, observe the hygiene and social distancing recommendations, and we’ll all come out of this ready to pick up where we left off.

Life’s good!

LICENSING

MECHANICAL SERVICES LICENSING FRAMEWORK CONTINUES TO ROLL OUT IN QUEENSLAND

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) is continuing to work with licensees and industry to rollout the new mechanical services licensing framework. To date, a total of 542 mechanical services licence applications have been lodged, with a total of 180 licences granted. A total of 204 licensees have taken advantage of fee waivers when applying, which were made available via the transitional arrangements for their mechanical services stream.

Fee Waivers Still Available for Eligible AirConditioning and Refrigeration Contractor Licensees for a Limited Time Existing Mechanical Services – Air-Conditioning Refrigeration (Limited Design and Unlimited Design) Contractor licensees are reminded that if they have been undertaking scopes of work that now fall under the Mechanical Services – Plumbing licence class, they will need to apply for this new licence. These licensees may be eligible for a free Mechanical Services – Plumbing licence provided: • The application is made by 30 June 2020; • The applicant has the required technical qualifications; and • The applicant can show they have performed mechanical services plumbing work (or employed workers to carry out this work) for a minimum period of six months prior to 1 January 2020. The Mechanical Services Plumbing Licence Experience Requirements factsheet outlines clear examples of acceptable experience. Please note that the fee exemption is not available for existing Nominee Supervisors or Site Supervisors licensees.

Apply Now to Take Advantage of Transitional Arrangements for Qualifications and Experience Existing Plumbing and Drainage Contractor licensees may be able to use their experience alone to satisfy the technical qualification requirements for a Mechanical Services – Plumbing licence. This is known as an alternative qualification pathway. These licensees must demonstrate six months’ experience in performing mechanical services plumbing work. A factsheet detailing the required technical qualifications and experience for mechanical services plumbing is available on the QBCC website (www.qbcc.qld.gov.au). Note: relevant experience must be provided for mechanical services – plumbing work, NOT regulated plumbing work. The Mechanical Services Plumbing Licence Experience Requirements factsheet outlines clear examples of acceptable experience. QBCC licensees with an existing QBCC Gasfitting licence may be eligible for a Mechanical Services – Medical Gas licence using the alternative qualification pathway provided for under the transitional arrangements.

The Mechanical Services Medical Gas Licence Experience Requirements factsheet outlines clear examples of acceptable experience to provide. Applications can take six to eight weeks to assess and process. Therefore, applicants using the alternative qualification pathways are encouraged to lodge their applications as soon as possible to ensure their licence is issued by 1 July 2020.

Webinar Recordings are Now Available The QBCC recently hosted a series of helpful information webinars for each of the mechanical services streams. The webinars covered topics such as when you need to submit your application, what makes you eligible for fee waivers, which technical qualifications are needed, and what options are available without technical qualifications. Visit the Education and Engagement Industry Events page to watch recordings of the webinars, and view participant questions and answers for each webinar.

Looking for a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)? Information about how to apply for recognition of prior learning and details for RTOs for mechanical services technical qualifications are now available on the Mechanical Services Technical Qualification Pathways And Case Studies page on the QBCC website. Here you will also find a series of case studies to help you understand when you may need to engage an RTO for assessment of your current skills or training.

Learn More about the Licensing Framework Visit the mechanical services webpages to access detailed information for each mechanical services stream, including timelines for licencing and transitional arrangements. A reminder that licensees who are members of industry bodies are encouraged to seek assistance from those organisations to understand the new licensing framework.

How to Apply The easiest way to apply for a mechanical services licence is by using the online licence application form, which is available via the myQBCC portal (https://my.qbcc.qld.gov.au). The online form makes the application process convenient and efficient. For more information, visit www.qbcc.qld.gov.au. NCC: EVOLVING WITH TECHNOLOGY A constant evolution of technologies in today’s marketplace means we are expected to adapt to a new way of obtaining information. To assist in adapting to these new technologies, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) regularly develops innovative solutions, such as tools and other resources to support the National Construction Code (NCC) in its application and assist with its use. Examples of these tools include calculators, guides, publications, advisory notes and, of course, the online version of the NCC. These tools are available from the ABCB resource library on any mobile device and, like the other tools in the tool belt, are designed to make life just that little bit easier.

NCC Online

NCC online provides improved access and efficiency, both on-site and in the office environment through its search functionality and alerts, which link users to additional related resources. It also provides pop ups with key information such as defined terms.

Calculators

For example, for plumbing and building practitioners, the calculators such as the Gutters, Downpipes & Overflow Calculator can assist in designing compliant residential roof drainage systems quickly and accurately. The Sanitary Facilities Calculator can quickly and easily calculate the required number of sanitary facilities to assist with NCC compliance for any class of building. These calculators and others are available to save you time and provide an easy means to navigate some of the more complex areas of the NCC. For building practitioners, the NCC 2019 Volume One Lighting Calculator is available to energy efficiency users. Beta testing for new and updated energy efficiency calculators is being worked through and final versions will be updated soon. Until then, a number of beta versions are available on the ABCB website for practitioner use. The ABCB is always working on new innovations and tools, and if you have subscribed to the NCC you will receive updates when these are available for testing and use.

All of these online resources can be found at www.abcb.gov.au. Article supplied by the Australian Building Codes Board.

QUEENSLAND COMMUNITIES SHARE A FURTHER $12 MILLION FOR RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE More infrastructure funding has reached regional and remote parts of Queensland impacted by the 2019 monsoon trough event. As part of the Commonwealth and Queensland Government’s $134.5 million infrastructure package, a further $12 million has been allocated to 26 resilience projects that will ensure communities can better withstand extreme weather events. This announcement is in addition to more than $81 million already approved for stronger, more resilient infrastructure. This funding will secure better roads and community infrastructure for disaster-affected parts of Queensland. It will protect Queenslanders and the towns they live in. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said maintaining a solid pipeline of infrastructure work in the regions will create more jobs for Queenslanders. These projects are being delivered through the $242 million exceptional circumstances package jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Delivery of these projects will be rolled out until June 2021. To see the full list of betterments projects, you can view the Queensland Government press release at http://statements.qld.gov.au/Statement/2020/4/24/ queensland-communities-share-a-further-12million-for-resilient-infrastructure.

TECHNICAL

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORDING Persons issuing invoices should be mindful that the wording used is accurate in regards to the type of work performed in relation to the parts of the legislation that work falls under to avoid any future confusion/repercussions. As an example, let’s imagine you attend a property with a blocked drain. In the process of clearing it you identify that the drain is broken and provide a price to repair it, which the client accepts. During the repair you find a cracked pipe that you cut out and replace with a short section of pipe. After performing the repair, you present an invoice outlining the work undertaken, with the line item: Replaced section of 100mm drain. Fast forward a period of time, and you are approached for an audit and asked to provide the last 50 invoices you have issued. When the above invoice is inspected you are queried as to why no Form 4 was submitted for the work performed. Assuming this was a class 1 or 10 building, under Schedule 1 of the Plumbing and Drainage Regulation (PDR) 2019 (Notifiable Work):

4. Existing Sanitary Drainage

work necessary for extending, altering, replacing or removing sanitary drainage, other than a combined sanitary drain, if the work is for— • an existing class 1 or 10 building or structure; or • an extension to an existing class 1 building; or • a structure for an existing class 1 building. In reality, the work that was performed falls under “Minor Work” and does not require any form submissions or applications, but the wording used on the invoice does not support that. If the work was performed at commercial premises a repair would still fall under minor work while a replacement would require a permit, an application through the Local Government. MPAQ members who have any questions about this can call the MPAQ Technical team on 07 3273 0800.

COVID-19 AND YOUR SUPER The COVID-19 outbreak is impacting superannuation causing super fund members to ask some key questions of their funds particularly on market volatility.

What does the market volatility mean for my super? Since the COVID-19 outbreak market volatility has impacted super balances and we understand how concerning this can be. Market volatility is a normal part of the economic life cycle. Many of you would have experienced this during the global financial crisis from 2007 and the bounce back from 2009. BUSSQ has processes in place to help reduce the impact and we’re pleased that to date BUSSQ members have fared better than members of many other funds. Our team are also working to ensure we take advantage of the market rebound. Super is a long-term investment, and as the graph below shows, markets typically bounce back over time. It’s important to remember this when making a decision to change investment options or withdraw your super. For more information visit bussq.com.au or call Troy Wolter on 0417 702 822.

The information supplied in this article is general advice only and does not take into account or consider your personal objectives, financial situation or needs. Before acting, you should review the relevant Product Disclosure Statement to ensure you have all the information about the relevant BUSSQ product and how it works and consider the appropriateness of the information to your needs or seek independent advice from a properly qualified professional. Prepared by BUSS (Queensland) Pty Ltd (ABN 15 065 081 281, AFSL 237860) as Trustee for BUSSQ (BUSSQ Fund, ABN 85 571 332 201).

VICARIOUS LIABILITY It is important to stay connected during COVID-19 with friends, family and colleagues, and the best way to do this at present is via phone, online or through video teleconferencing software, such as Zoom. Due to the importance of staying connected it is also a timely reminder that employees and employers can be held liable if found to have discriminated or harassed a fellow colleague or employee. An employee can be held personally liable if they are found to have sexually harassed a fellow employee, even if there was no physical touching. Sexual harassment can include, but is not limited to: • Suggestive comments or jokes; • Sexually explicit pictures or posters; • Unwanted invitations to go out on dates: • Intrusive questions about a person’s private life or body; and • Sexually explicit emails or SMS text messages or online comments.

An employer can be held legally responsible for acts of discrimination or harassment that occur in the workplace or in connection with a person’s employment. This is called vicarious liability. Employers can also be liable when computers, phones or tablets are used to harass a person; for example, by sending text messages, posting on social media sites or sending emails that have a connection to the workplace, such as both persons are employees of the workplace. It is important to have a strong harassment and discrimination policy in place that all employees have been trained on and informed of the content. For further assistance on policies, please contact Kym Campbell or Emma Ross from the MPAQ Workplace Relations team on 07 3273 0800. TECHNOLOGY

EMBRACING TECHNOLOGY IN THE PLUMBING INDUSTRY The start of 2020 has seen the world stop because of the COVID-19 global pandemic and with that has come a renewed focus on the technology that the plumbing industry has on hand to help prevent the spread of similar viruses in the future. Plumbers and gasfitters protect the health and safety of the community. This has been a message that many in the industry, MPAQ included, have been trying to promote for years. Until recently, many people in first world countries may have only been aware of this on the periphery of their day-to-day lives because, let’s face it, it’s not often in the built up, highly populated areas of countries like Australia that you’re faced with the illnesses and complications that arise from poor sanitation and hygiene. However, following the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the importance that plumbing plays in the sanitation and hygiene of our daily lives has become much more mainstream. Across the world there has been a renewed appreciation for having the ability to wash your hands with clean water—it has been the advice from most governing bodies and health professions that washing your hands thoroughly and correctly is one of the most effective ways of preventing the transference of viruses. But we live in the year 2020. In 2020 we have the technology at our finger tips to take hygiene to another level. Washing your hands is great, but what good is it if you then have to touch taps that hundreds of people have touched before you. Now more than ever, touch-free products are vitally important in public areas, and manufacturers are embracing smart technology in fixtures and fittings. Outside of the hygiene aspects of new technology, plumbers are selling their customers a luxurious lifestyle with the products they sell; it’s all about products that look good and improve the consumer’s life. Technology in plumbing has also had a substantial impact on plumbing businesses and their employees. New and innovative tools are being brought to market all the time, and with each new development they help to make jobs more efficient and introduce new levels of accuracy. Energy efficiency has become an important way of living, and technology helps the plumbing industry contribute to that through the tools plumbers use to the products they sell to the way they do business. Plumbing companies have to see these developments as an opportunity to gain a competitive advantage over their competitors and to extend their unique selling proposition. Embracing technology advancements should be a part of every business’s growth strategy. It is about convenience, comfort, energy efficiency, and safety—for both the business, the employees, and the customer. Over the next few pages, we feature some of the innovative ways the industry has been embracing technology.

The Pillar Standard Eco-flow uses a spray type aerator to deliver a conservative 6-star WELS rating, for applications where water conservation is critical, without compromising on effectiveness of handwashing. The Pillar Standard Regular flow delivers a 5-star WELS rating for general applications where water usage is less critical. The Pillar Standard Healthcare utilises a special aerator featuring Agion® antimicrobial technology, which offers long lasting protection against bacteria reproduction. Coupled with smooth laminar flow, and timed, automatic flushing of the faucet (in all Pillar models), this model is perfectly suited to health care environments and hospitals. STIEBEL ELTRON – TOUCH FREE HAND WASHING The COVID-19 pandemic is currently the most serious issue facing the world. One of the most important ways to prevent the spread of the virus is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Sensor taps provide the best solution to hygiene as your hands do not need to come into contact with the tap. This is particularly important in shared bathrooms, where users are exposed to germs from other users. Wherever smaller volumes of warm water are frequently required, the STIEBEL ELTRON DEM 6 mini electric instantaneous water heater is the perfect choice. This appliance delivers water at the electronically controlled set temperature without having to overcome long supply lines with resulting line losses. Consequently, the DEM is ideally suited to washbasins in commercial bathrooms, where a constant outlet temperature is preferred. Delivering a maximum of 50°C hot water following AS3498, the DEM is hardwired to the 230 V mains. Sold with a chrome sensor tap, the STIEBEL ELTRON DEM 6 + WSH is a package that goes well with any interior. Visit www.stiebel-eltron.com.au to learn more.

GET JETTING NOW Councils and water authorities across the country are warning of major issues with non-flushables being used as a result of loo roll shortages. Sydney Water have reported a 22% increase in blockages caused by these non-dissolving items. Plumbers who specialise in drain cleaning are now being inundated with work. They are under pressure to cover as many jobs as possible to prevent infection and the spread of germs. Aussie Pumps, the leading drain jetter manufacturer in the country, is reporting a sales surge as plumbers upgrade their gear. “We’re finding many plumbers who traditionally use mechanical eels and snakes to clear drains, are now switching to high pressure “jetters”. They are telling us how using high pressure water to clear chokes is done in a fraction of the time,” said Aussie Pumps’ Albie Bester. Making the leap to a jetter is affordable thanks to Aussie Pumps’ Jetter Jackpot initiative. The company is promoting their entry level Class A 4,000 psi Cobra A jetter for only $7,000 plus GST. That’s $1,540 off the recommended list price! As a class A jetter, no operator RTO certification is required under the Australian High Pressure Jetting Safety Standards. That means a plumber can be in the jetting business without the need for formal RTO training and certification. “We provide a complete Jetter safety manual and online videos that show how to use and maintain a jetter,” said Bester. “However, there are

CAROMA SMART COMMAND ECO-SYSTEM As organisations and buildings seek to ensure that their tenants and bathroom users are protected from the spread of harmful bacteria and illness, cleanliness and hygiene in public or shared bathroom spaces is now more important than ever. As public or shared bathrooms are high traffic spaces, they carry with them a higher risk of bacterial spread. It is, therefore, important that fixtures and systems be put in place that can help reduce the risk of transmission and drive more hygienic outcomes for users. The advent of sensor activated tapware and soap dispenser products heralded a fundamental step towards reducing the risk to users when they interact with public or shared bathroom spaces; however, more can be done by better understanding user behaviour through data and insights. The award winning Caroma Smart Command plumbing eco-system features a full suite of interconnected touch-free plumbing fixtures, which can help combat the spread of harmful bacteria at those key areas in a bathroom space that users interact with. This smart eco-system is comprised of designer sensor tapware, automatic flush urinals, and sensor toilet flush panels, as-well-as all the additional technology hardware and cloud dashboard analytics. The interconnectivity of the system enables individual fixture level data to be transformed into actionable insights for building managers. This unprecedented level of data capture across plumbing systems helps building managers drive the sustainable management of water in their building, cost savings through cleaning and maintenance efficiencies, and supports positive user experience through touchless interactions and insights into hygiene practices. Building managers can draw on such insights as toilet and urinal use numbers overlaid with tapware activation numbers and hand-wash duration periods to provide a clear indication as to how hygienic a given bathroom’s users are. Armed with this near real time insight, building managers can enact targeted educational programs to help drive more hygienic bathroom practices. Most recently, Caroma has rounded out the ultimate smart bathroom plumbing eco-system with the introduction of the Intelligent Shower & Eco Valve, which became available on the market from April 2020. This latest addition to the Caroma Smart Command eco-system rounds out a portfolio of Bluetooth enabled, cloud connected smart bathroom fixtures, which provides building managers with never

seen data and insights into their building’s water usage. Enabling informed, proactive decision making to provide better experiences for users, predict maintenance, and help save every drop of water. The Intelligent Shower provides a seamless user experience with touchscreen operation, which enables precise thermostatic temperature control as-well-as displaying shower duration and water usage to encourage shorter showers and water mindfulness. Available in a single port that allows the operation of a singular shower fixture, a dual port that can divert between an overhead and hand shower, or a three port eco variant that gives the ability to recapture water while the thermostatic mixer is reaching the desired temperature. This recapture feature ensures every last drop of water is saved. “This Intelligent Shower not only enhances the user experience, it does so without compromising on the building managers ability to control and monitor a building’s water performance,” Caroma Smart Command Marketing Manager Carl Gee says.

“The ability to monitor bathroom fixtures via the Caroma Smart Command cloud and mobile app allows the early detection of maintenance issues or leaks. However, the missing link was understanding what’s happening behind the wall,” says Gee. Its estimated that up to 21% of a commercial office’s water usage can be attributed to preventable water leaks*. The challenge has always been how to identify when a leak is occurring and where so that it can be isolated and fixed. The Caroma Smart Command Eco Valve is an Australian first of its kind. When installed within a bathroom plumbing system the Eco Valve can be programmed to detect unplanned excessive water flow, isolate the issue, and send alerts directly to the building manager so that quick decisions can be made on how best to react. This helps ensure bathroom uptime and positive user experiences. The Intelligent Shower and Eco Valve launched into the Australian market this April and is available for all commercial building specifications. PATIENT WELLBEING AND COMFORT – AT THE HEART OF ENWARE’S NEW AQUABLEND® HEALTH TMV DESIGN No one likes to think that harmful bacteria exist in their facility; however, monitoring and controlling the danger of bacterial growth within aged care and health care facilities is an ongoing and complex issue faced by providers and users every day. It is vital to the safety and wellbeing of both staff and patients that bacteria growth is monitored and controlled to a strict standard in health and aged care facilities. That is the reason why safety measures and a detailed Water Quality Risk Management (WQRM) plan are crucial in these high-risk environments. The reality is that water health is a challenging issue. Did you know a hospital ensuite shower is one of the highest risk locations for a patient to inhale legionella? The key environmental conditions that encourage the growth and spread of legionella are: • The inorganic and organic content of the water; • The presence of biofilm – sticky microorganisms that adhere to surfaces; and • Stagnant water (deadlegs) – water that has not flowed for an amount of time. Legionella can multiply at temperatures from 20°C to 70°C. The optimum condition for legionella is warm stagnant water at a temperature of around 35°C. Legionnaires’ disease can especially affect those with already compromised health or those who have underlying medical conditions. Designing and developing smarter, healthier, safer ensuite bathroom solutions have been the driving force behind the new Aquablend® Health TMV.

• Easy tool access to front-facing service components: • Adjust temperature mixture • Perform thermal flushing without recommissioning – saving time and money • Maintain strainers and check valves • Access all test ports, servicing parts, inlets, outlets and mounting hardware • A handy four way bypass mixer, supplies the shower, toilet, ensuite basin and clinical basin. Smart Flow® compatible – now that’s definitely a bonus when it comes to informed risk management and performance analysis of the water delivery system. This means that: • Smart Flow ® software shows real time readings and records information history, such as: • Water temperatures over time • Areas at risk of stagnate water • Flow or lack-of-flow and water usage • Alert notifications • Meets Water Quality Risk Management (WQRM) plan requirements Patient wellbeing and comfort are Enware’s top priorities and are at the heart of their design, now and into the future. Visit www.enware.com.au to learn more.

How does the Aquablend® Health TMV control prevent legionella growth? The small, compact Aquablend® Health TMV can simply be installed in the shower behind the shower mixer. Being installed so close to a bacteria risk point, such as the shower, means shorter pipe work between the TMV and shower and, therefore, minimal potential to hold unhealthy stagnant water. This means short, direct pipework: • The pipe is more frequently replenished with fresh water • Quicker, easier flushing and thermal scouring – using the thermal flush function • Less surface area for biofilms to develop • The user benefits from a reduction in bacteria harbouring • No cold shower as the water gets mixed at the point of use in the shower Due to the Aquablend® Health TMV’s incredibly compact size and integrated shower mixer the TMV is able to be installed at the point of use and at a good point of service while looking great. This means: • Easier, more efficient and more aesthetically pleasing architecture design • Direct point of service if thermal flushing is required to sanitize stagnant water and scour biofilms

SALES IS DIFFERENT TO MARKETING ...BUT JUST AS IMPORTANT!

Sales: just the thought of selling seems to be like public speaking for many. But it really doesn’t have to be like that. Sure, there are questioning techniques and processes that we can talk about later; but really, it’s about being present, being engaging, knowing your customer, building rapport and communicating. People often put sales and marketing in the same category. Many spend a pretty penny on marketing (google ad words, websites, advertisements, signwriting on your vehicles, to name just a few examples) but forget to brush up on the sales skills needed to get a customer over the line. All the money spent on marketing could be wasted when a potential customer reaches out to a business and doesn’t get a good first impression. Make no mistake, you are always being judged.

Being Present – Initial Contact Most customers, like everyone else, are time poor, so it’s important that you make it easy for them to contact you. Make sure you have your phone number prominent and easily accessible; for example, put your phone number at the top of your webpage and include a click to call button. Customers want prompt responses so being available is vital. Even if you have to call them back, not picking up the phone when it rings is where many still fail. How you answer the phone needs to be cheerful and professional. Always answer with your company name and your own name: “Good Morning ABC Plumbing, Ben speaking. How can I help?” If you miss the phone your answer phone message needs to promote professionalism and include your company name and your name. Listen to your own message and get feedback from others: does it sound approachable and professional? Instant texts from missed calls are a good idea as well. “Hi, Ben here, from ABC Plumbing. Sorry I missed your call; I’m working with a customer right now, but can call you shortly”.

Being Engaging Once you have the opportunity to proceed with a quote communication is key. Let your customer know if you are running late, for example, even if

18

| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE May/June 2020

it’s just a few minutes. When you arrive be presentable and clean. Offer to show licenses, show them that you are an MPAQ member and our code of ethics, and ask them about what they want to achieve. This is where you want them to do most of the talking, and you do the listening. This time is all about your customer.

Knowing Your Customer Who is the decision maker? Quick tip: try to find out if there is anyone else involved with making a decision (for example, two business partners or a husband and wife). If there is and you are currently only speaking to one party, try to make yourself available to answer any questions with the absent party.

Building Rapport If you have listened to the customer, now is the time to let them know you have and that you understand what it is they want to achieve. If we want to use a sales term, this is called paraphrasing. Simply put it is repeating back what the customer has told you. It doesn’t matter if you get it slightly wrong, in fact this is a good time to iron out any miscommunications. Customers like to know they have been understood; this builds trust. Further rapport building is being relatable, finding common ground, being empathic, and sharing experiences.

Communicating Explain how the job will be completed and what materials you will be using. It’s sometimes hard to remember that people don’t know what you know, so be open to answer questions. Let them know in advance if the work will be particularly noisy, require a lot of space, or be dirty. Give reassurance that this will be kept to a minimum and that you will do your best to work with them. Providing a quote as soon as possible that is clear and accurate is paramount. And the number one tip that often gets neglected: follow up. Following up absolutely wins jobs. MPAQ is here to help your business thrive. WHY NOW IS THE TIME TO FOCUS ON UPSKILLING YOUR STAFF While tough conversations are inevitable when the money belt is pulled tighter, unnecessary stress is not going to benefit anyone and can even put your staff and operations at risk. Upskilling, however, can help you fight the battle of uninvited stress in the workplace by giving your team a solid foundation to stand on. Studies* have shown that employees who spend time at work learning are: • 47% less likely to be stressed • 39% more likely to feel productive and successful • 23% more ready to take on additional responsibilities • 21% more likely to feel confident and happy Now is the perfect time to invest in upskilling not just to benefit your business, but also to empower your team to feel confident in themselves and their contributions to your workplace.

Now is the Time to Take Back Control Upskilling may be the last thing on your mind in the COVID-19 climate, but here are three reasons why it should be at the top of your to-do list.

1

Prioritising Upskilling Now Can Prepare Your Business to Succeed Later

At the moment, it is unclear what exactly a “business world returning to balance” will mean for trade contracting companies, big or small. By working now to create a skilled and knowledgeable workforce you are preparing your team to handle the new normal as the world recovers from COVID-19. This means that in the future your staff will be better equipped to: • Take on new types of jobs or additional workloads • Use more efficient processes in the office and the field • Adapt to the changing landscape of residential, commercial and project work Developing the capability of your workforce also means you are preparing your business to deliver a better customer experience with: • An engaged and productive workforce • Knowledgeable and experienced field staff • A wider range of product or service offerings With the right tools and knowledge, your team will provide you with a powerful competitive advantage. This can be a defining factor in ensuring your business’s long-term success.

2

More Availability Means Better Employee Attendance and Engagement

Think back to the last time that you tried to upskill your staff. You would have been battling common business roadblocks to upskilling like moving inventory, busy schedules, conflicting requirements, and so on. Today, however, it’s likely that things in your business are a little different as many tradespeople see their workloads lighten due to the changing nature of contracting work. For your team, however, this doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. Upskilling is a great way to re-engage staff and ensure they are maintaining similar levels of productivity, even with an inconsistent influx of work. Doing it in a time where staff are more available can also allow for better attendance rates to training and development sessions, as well as more engagement with the task at hand.

3

An Investment in Personal Development Can Benefit Mental Health

Speaking on the topic of lighter workloads, an uncertain job environment can invite stress and concern around job security, which in turn can affect the mental health of your staff.

The changing economic landscape doesn’t always spell doom and gloom for companies. There are still ways to positively contribute to your business as well as the livelihood and wellbeing of your staff. Take back control of your business by joining simPRO at the simPRO Summit. An inaugural event, the simPRO Summit will be an online learning experience that will take place over 48 hours with experts from trade industries. They’ll discuss the current climate and how you can use this chance to take control of your business, your workflows and the capability of your team to create the ultimate workforce for future success. COMMISSIONER TO HELP QUEENSLAND SMALL BUSINESS RECOVER A Queensland Small Business Commissioner will be appointed to give small businesses a single point of contact for leasing disputes during recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

The Minister said the current part-time Small Business Champion, Maree Adshead, had done a wonderful job since 2017 promoting and protecting the sector, which represents around 97% of all Queensland business and employs more than 970,000 people. “The appointment of the new commissioner will be made as soon as possible, and Ms Adshead will continue in the role in the interim,” Ms Fentiman said. “During this time of crisis, the recovery of the vital small business sector needs a full-time role with increased powers. “We know it is likely that the COVID-19 pandemic will have long-term effects on the Queensland economy and the small business community. “We need to provide the business community with as much support as possible, as soon as possible.” Work on establishing the office of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner will begin immediately after the passing of the legislative amendments. MPAQ members who are struggling to get through this unprecedented time can contact MPAQ on 07 3273 0800 for support.

Minister for Employment and Small Business, the Hon. Shannon Fentiman, said the new Small Business Commissioner will be appointed until the end of 2020 to provide much-needed dispute resolution support during this crucial time. “Our thousands of small businesses are struggling due to the COVID-19 crisis, and now more than ever they need assistance,” Ms Fentiman said. “We know that dispute resolution can come at a significant cost for small business owners in terms of legal services, time away from their business, lost productivity and income, as well as additional expenses and stress.” “The Commissioner’s role will meet the needs of small businesses and provide them with valuable advice and assistance in relation to resolving disputes.” “Establishing a single point of contact for small businesses handling leasing disputes will result in time, money and resource savings for business owners and government.” Introducing a Small Business Commissioner will bring us in line with every other state and their role will assist with Queensland’s implementation of the National Cabinet Mandatory Code of Conduct – SME Leasing Principles during COVID-19. Key groups seeking the change included the Australian Industry Group, the Australian Small Business and Family When surveyed 24% of consumers are looking for a buy now, pay Enterprise Ombudsman, and the Chamber of Commerce and later provider in home improvement/trades. INCREASE SERVICE CALLS WHILE IMPROVING CASHFLOW important market.

The buy now pay later revolution has changed the way consumers pay. Customers expect to have the options to spread the cost of their plumbing services over time just as they do when they are making an online purchase or walking into a retail shop. The team at Payright have built a buy now pay later product that specialises in higher priced purchases, all the way up to $10,000 and is particularly dominant in the services space with home improvement making up 13% of the Payright business and growing. Plumbers can offer Payright, providing customers with the option to pay in fortnightly or monthly instalments, up to 36 months. By making it easier to budget for, plumbers have turned a call out fee into a day’s work. A job that would have otherwise been seen as “not right now” can be booked immediately. This increases both service call jobs and happy clients. Payright improves cash flow, by immediately paying the plumber in full for the job. There is no invoicing or debt collection for the plumbing business to do and many find a significant reduction in administration costs. Buy now, pay later is seen as a catalyst for overall growth. It is becoming the new norm because it works for customers, addressing their various needs and allowing them to spread the cost over time but also puts opportunities on the table for plumbers. In recent research*, 56% of consumers preferred buy now, pay later to a credit card, while 88% of customers who have used a buy now pay later service would use them again. 48% of customers surveyed said having a buy now pay later option for over $1,000 would help them with their budgeting. The technology is simple to use and after signing up, a business can be set up within minutes, immediately offering the buy now pay later solution to its customers. GAINSITE’S HELEN ROBINSON ANNOUNCED AS A PLUMBING AMBASSADOR At the 2020 World Plumbing Day in March, Helen Robinson from Gainsite Plumbing & Gas was announced as one of four plumbing ambassadors appointed to help promote the plumbing and gas trade to school students and career seekers.

Regional Area Representation Helen said it was important that regional areas were represented. “I think anytime the regional areas have representation in industry it helps to highlight issues that we have with training outside of the capital cities.” One of Helen’s main duties as ambassador will be to promote plumbing as a career. “I would love to see high schools promote all trades at the grade 10 level when students are looking at choosing career paths. It is difficult to look at career paths after grade 10 when you have chosen subjects that you feel would aid you in your employment choices.”

HUGHES PLUMBING CONTRACTORS AND THEIR EXPERIENCE OF RETINOBLASTOMA

Importance of Women in the Industry Helen also thinks that it’s important that women are represented. “A lot of females are also now more accepted into trades. If you have not come from a trade-based family or had exposure to trades, it is very hard to look at this as a career path.” If you would like more information about the work the 2020 plumbing ambassadors are doing, call MPAQ on 07 3273 0800. EMPLOYEES VS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS: THE CONSEQUENCES OF MISCLASSIFICATION As the new year truly gets underway, the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) has declared that 2020 will be a year during which it focusses and cracks down on businesses that misclassify its employees as contractors. As a clear indication of this focus, the FWO has launched an underpayment case against Queensland transport company, Boske Road Transport. The FWO alleges that Boske wrongly treated a number of delivery drivers as independent contractors when they were in fact employees. The FWO goes on to allege the drivers were covered by the Road Transport and Distribution Award, and because of this misclassification, Boske underpaid the drivers Award entitlements by some $63,800 between 2016 and 2018. The drivers: • drove Boske-owned vehicles; • wore Boske uniforms; • had to work on days and at times set by the company; and • were paid according to the hours worked. In the claim the FWO asked the Court: • to order Boske to backpay the drivers; • to impose civil penalties (fines) against Boske; • to declare that Boske breached the Fair Work Act by failing to pay overtime, penalty rates, leave entitlements, superannuation and work-related costs; and • for an order that the business display a notice on site about workers’ rights and a notice that identifies the difference between contractors and employees. The Fair Work Ombudsman issued a statement that “if employers misclassify employees as independent contractors and pay flat rates that undercut entitlements, they face serious consequences such as court action, hefty back-payment bills and penalties.” For its part, Boske denies the claims. Given the FWO’s stated intention to campaign on misclassified contractors for 2020, it is

22

| MASTER PLUMBER MAGAZINE May/June 2020

important for businesses to take the time to review and consider any independent contractors they engage, particularly if: 1. the business pays an hourly rate for work; 2. the business sets work hours; 3. pay is calculated according to the time spent working, rather than on achieving a particular task; 4. the contractors are portrayed as being a part of the business and working for the business (for example, by wearing uniforms or having business cards that identify the most part of the business); and 5. the contractor cannot be said to be genuinely operating their own business, but instead are working for the business (especially if they are indistinguishable from others who are employees). While some businesses (and their workers) believe there are advantages to engaging people as independent contractors, the consequences of any court action and orders to back-pay wages and annual leave entitlements or to have civil penalties imposed may quickly make those advantages evaporate. As well, certain contractors must be covered by a business’s WorkCover policy in any event. It is essential for the business’s legal risk management to take time to review and assess whether your independent contractors are in fact employees, and if they are, to recognise that fact and pay sufficiently to meet Award entitlements.

What to Do If you have workers whom you treat as contractors, and their engagement is consistent with any of the points 1 to 5 above, then you need to take some steps to assess your exposure to a risk of the FWO investigating you and making adverse findings about your engagement practices. You also need to consider the likelihood that a supposed contractor may claim against you, or even worse, complain to the FWO, that you have misclassified them. There may be significant adverse financial consequences from such a claim. If one

contractor succeeds (or even claims they have been misclassified), you could face claims by a number of others. Multiple claims are common – don’t become another sufferer. If, for any of your contractor workers, you cannot say for sure that they are operating their own business, then you need to take steps to assess your exposure of an FWO investigation. If you are unsure, contact Cornwalls for advice and to review your contractors’ terms of engagement and operation to ensure your arrangements with the contractors are lawful and do not expose you to the unnecessary risk of claims for underpayment of wages or civil penalties. You also need to remember that directors or other persons in control of the business (for example HR managers) who knowingly participate in a breach of these contractor arrangements can be subject to personal liability. There may be ways to structure the contract arrangement that meet your business requirements but minimise the risk of misclassifying employees as contractors. Don’t leave this to chance or good luck. Review your contractor arrangements as soon as you can.

WORKING FROM HOME... & NOW YOU ARE SUED In the days of COVID-19, our Federal and State Governments have urged employers to allow as many workers as possible to work from home. In terms of spatial isolation in order to control the possible transmission of COVID-19, that remains a sensible and necessary public health directive. However, that does not mean that employers can ignore their health and safety obligations to their workers for work from home. Home becomes a workplace (or at least the space at home that is used for doing work is a workplace), and employers must take some degree of risk management steps to minimise the risk to health and safety while working at home. COVID-19 will not be an absolute defence to either a WorkCover claim or a work health and safety prosecution, if an employer does nothing more than direct people to work from home. The Cornwalls Employment, Workplace Relations and Safety team have put together an off-site working checklist that employers can provide to their employees. The checklist directs the employee’s attention to important and potential hazards and risks that must be considered and managed when a worker is working from home. The checklist covers the employee’s work area and environment (environmental conditions, emergency exit and safety equipment, electrical), workstation setup (chair, desk, monitors, keyboard and mouse), and communication. Points considered include: • If lighting is sufficient for the task being performed, easy to see, and comfortable on the eyes; • If a suitable first aid kit is available; • If seat pan on the chair has a round front and the height can be adjusted for preferred sitting height to desk; and • If there is adequate leg space under the workstation and feet can be flat on the ground, or a suitable footrest provided. Employers should direct their employees to use the checklist as a risk management tool to assess their work area at home. The checklist can be found on the MPAQ Coronavirus Knowledge and Support page at www.mpaq.com.au/workplace-relations/coronavirus. In this unique time, it may not be possible for an employer to inspect every worker’s home (and indeed, given that some may be in self-isolation, it may be impossible to inspect every worker’s home). An employer can, at the very least, have employees review and manage the risks themselves, and provide photographic proof of their home workspace. The checklist can be sent to each employee asking them to complete it (either online, or to print off and complete). Although the checklist does not provide a fool proof and complete defence to any potential claim, in the current circumstances, it demonstrates a best practice risk management approach to ensuring a business complies with its obligations for worker safety, and it opens the opportunity for communication and consultation with workers if in fact they identify potential hazards. The checklist may need to be tailored to your work requirements and/or the individual’s home environment – it is designed as a template. If you wish to discuss any other aspects of work health and safety and working from home, please contact the Cornwalls Employment, Workplace Relations and Safety team on 07 3223 5900, or email r.king@cornwallsqld.com.au.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

MANAGING HEALTH AND SAFETY WHILE IMPLEMENTING SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES

With many businesses having to adjust the way they do their work in recent times, it’s important that your business continues to maintain health and safety practices, whether that’s in the office, at home, or on a jobsite. This article will go through some health and safety matters and ways to maintain social interaction while remaining socially distant. Attending Workplace or Worksites If an employee is required to attend the workplace (e.g. office) it is important to implement the social distancing requirements as determined by the Australian Government. If this cannot be achieved with the current work space layout, the employer and employees will need to develop ways in which this can be adhered to, such as moving some furniture around, having alternate working days in the office, etc. Other areas that employers may need to consider are: • Employee safety – if they are working alone in the office, are they able to lock the premises and also get out of the premises quickly. • Cleanliness – who is required to clean after each occasion when someone has been in the office? Is it a dedicated cleaner or are employees required to clean the areas? This would need to be communicated effectively with employees so all know their responsibilities. • The employer is regularly consulting with employees about identifying and managing any safety hazards and risks. If an employee is required to attend a worksite, there are particular measures that need to be carried out as it will depend on the type of worksite. We have further information on our website, but factors may include emergency work at someone’s house. In this case members

26

of the household should remain in a separate section of the house for the duration of the work being performed.

Working from Home

Some business have moved to employees working from home. It is important for employers to be checking in regularly with employees and ensuring that they have adequate access to appropriate support, not only within the business but also in terms of their own psychological safety. An employer would also want to have a Flexible Working Arrangements Policy to outline the expectations of working from home as well as a risk assessment checklist of the employees’ work space at their home. In this climate, it is recommended that employers seek to: • Regularly and transparently communicate and share information with employees – this can be via email, videoconferencing, group texts, etc; • Provide employees with a point of contact to discuss concerns – this may be the business owner, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), or a specialised service provider within an industry, such as Mates in Construction in the building and construction industry; and • Set boundaries for employees, such as start and finish times, breaks throughout the day, and regular stretches.

Employees on Stand Down or Minimal Work

It is important that an employer continues to communicate with all staff during COVID-19. This is especially important if employees have been stood down or are carrying out reduced hours of work. It is not only a legal requirement but it also maintains psychological safety for your employees.

Maintaining Human Interaction

There are multiple options for maintaining regular communication with employees, regardless of whether they are continuing to work in the office, on site, at home, are on stand down, or in isolation. Some ideas that we have come across include: • Twice a week teleconference to provide an update on the business situation and also to touch base with everyone and have a chat. As an employer, you may not know whether this is the only interaction an employee receives; therefore, it might be very much appreciated from the employee’s perspective. • Friday afternoon chats where employees get together via videoconferencing to catch up, advise of new projects, or the latest playlists/podcasts they have listened to. This may also help to maintain the culture of your business during this time and allow employees to maintain that connection with one another. • Organise for each employee to host a cooking session • A weekly challenge that people have to complete, such as kicking a ball into a bucket that is 10m away. It is such unprecedented times that we are going through and the human element is what is going to keep each of us strong through this process. By maintaining the social aspect where possible, this may help your business to continue to grow when work returns. For further information relating to this article or any workplace relations queries, please contact the MPAQ Workplace Relations team on 07 3273 0800.

MATES ARE STRONGER TOGETHER: A REMINDER FROM MATES IN CONSTRUCTION Hi, I’m Justin. I’m a plumber by trade and now a Field Officer for Mates in Construction. The questions I get asked most often these days are: • How do I keep myself well in these challenging times? • What do I do if I am worried about a mate who I believe is struggling? • And what do I do if I am struggling? I am not an expert, but as someone with a mental illness and a lived experience of suicide, these are some of the things I have learnt that keep me well and help me help other people that may be doing it tough. Self-care is important to me. Why? Because when I am well, I not only have the fuel to get me through the tough stuff but it gives me the capacity to help my mates. Keeping my buckets topped up is key for me. The buckets represent different aspects of my life including physical (daily energy), emotional (relationships), mental (focus) and spiritual (purpose). I try to top each of those buckets up daily with self-care activities. They include things like gardening or going for a walk, calling a mate, hanging out with the kids, reading a book, doing a crossword, chilling out to music, or helping my neighbour. Those are just a few things that I do, but we are all different so think about what you would do to fill your buckets. Remember topping up our buckets is not an event but a daily routine that hopefully becomes a habit. It will make a big difference to how you feel about yourself and your ability to be there for other key people in your life.

Helping a mate who’s doing it tough? I break it down into four simple steps.

1

Notice changes in the things they do and say, especially if they are going through things that cause us all stress, such as job loss, relationship breakdown, or other tough situations.

2

Then ask: “what’s going on mate?” Call them out on the things you notice, such as: “mate you’re doing stuff and saying stuff that isn’t like you, what’s going on?”

3

Then listen – you don’t have to be a counsellor or psychologist, you just have to care. Listen to understand not to fix, because often we just want to be heard and understood!

4

Finally, connect them to help if needed. If they are a tradie they can call us at MATES on 1300 642 111. We are available 24/7 – make the call together. I know I was grateful when my mate made the call with me when I was doing it tough. If you are struggling, I encourage you to give us a call too, because Mates are stronger together during these tough times!

WORLD PLUMBING DAY CELEBRATIONS

Keynote Speaker Michael Crossland

11 March, Every Year, Everywhere On Wednesday 11 March, MPAQ once again celebrated World Plumbing Day by hosting the industry’s biggest breakfast at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. With over 300 attendees from the plumbing and gas industry, it was humbling to see the support and appreciation that individuals have for their industry. There were a number of government representatives in attendance, with special guests including the Honourable Mick de Brenni MP, Minister for Housing and Public Works, Digital Technology and Sport and Brett Bassett, Commissioner of the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.

Guest speaker – Michael Crossland The event’s guest speaker was Michael Crossland, an extraordinary man who has defied the odds of life-threatening cancer to build a life of exceptional achievements. An accomplished businessman and an elite sportsman, his life is a remarkable success. Despite spending nearly a quarter of his life in hospital, Michael has forged a highly successful career in the corporate world, represented Australia in his chosen sport and featured regularly across all forms of media. He also runs a school and orphanage in Haiti and has been presented with the Australia Day Ambassador role for eight consecutive years. Safe to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Michael was talking!

This is a Conversation Starter (TIACS) The MPAQ team sold raffle tickets throughout the breakfast for the 2020 MPAQ Events Charity Partner, This is a Conversation Starter (TIACS). Thank you to everyone who donated; over $4,000 was raised from your contributions! A special thank you to Ed Ross and Daniel Allen, TIACS founders, who attended. Visit the Events Page on the MPAQ website (www.mpaq.com.au) for more information about TIACS or how to donate.

MPAQ Events A note from the Events and Member Services Manager about MPAQ Events The events MPAQ run are an important part of how we engage with our members, and like many other organisations, we have had to reconsider our delivery of these for the foreseeable future. This has meant a postponement of some of our larger events, including the annual Plumbing and Gas Awards. This event will not be held in 2020, and will instead be combined with next year’s awards in July 2021. The Awards is one of the highlights of our year, the only plumbing specific industry awards program in Queensland, which we’ve proudly organised for over 20 years. Our decision to postpone this event was not an easy one; however, we felt it was the right thing to do. Right now our members’ focus should be on getting through COVID-19 and coming out strong on the other side of it. In July 2021, we’ll have the biggest party of the year as a reward for all the hard work that went into surviving this crisis. Another large event that has seen a 12 month postponement is the Trades Industry Conference, originally scheduled for September 2020. Held in conjunction with six other associations, we all agreed that delivering this event in the capacity it was first intended is the best option for our members, and in the mean time we will all focus tirelessly on supporting our members to the other side of COVID-19. Keep an eye out for the virtual events we are running in the coming months and get involved if you can. You can find out more below. It’s important to stay connected and strong as an industry, communicate with each other and lean on your association and other members for support at this time. We’re all in this together!

Lisa Ross

MPAQ will be conducting a number of online forums over the coming months to help keep the industry up to date. Speakers will be relevant to that region with topics focused around COVID-19 and how the crisis has impacted the industry plus general updates from QBCC and the local council.

At this time we will still be running our remaining Golf Days for 2020. These dates have all been postponed to October and will be reassessed if necessary.

Speakers and times for these events are still to be confirmed.

MPAQ Training A note from the Technical Services Manager about MPAQ Training During this unprecedented time, MPAQ made the difficult decision to postpone all face to face training courses as a measure to protect students, trainers and the public. Unfortunately, this has made access to training somewhat difficult, especially for regional members. In light of this we are now providing access to additional training courses online. The first new course added was COVID-19 Awareness, this short course provides information for businesses, employees and their customers about the virus and methods of mitigating contamination i.e. PPE, disinfection, etc. Additionally, the course includes a collection of resources that can be utilised throughout the business. This course is free to MPAQ members and their employees. There are also a suite of information and awareness courses available at reduced cost as a benefit not only to people on the tools but office and admin staff as well. You can find out more about these on our website: www.mpaq.com.au/training. When all this finally blows over, face to face training will recommence and things will get back to a very welcome normal. In the mean time, check out the online courses we have on offer listed below.

MPAQ REPRESENTED AT WETT 2020 IN INDIANAPOLIS USA Written by Dennis Yarrow, Yarrow Plumbing Services

Big boys toys

Well, my oldest son and I did a Kenny earlier this year and headed to Indianapolis for the annual WETT Show (17-20 February 2020). For you young blokes who don’t know who or what Kenny was, just google it or Shane Jacobson; it was a movie about a sewer pump out guy/wanna-be plumber who did a trip to the Pumper & Pipe Cleaner Show, which was the forerunner to the WETT Show. The WETT Show is a premier American trade show displaying the latest in sewer, drainage inspection and repair technology with a large helping of what they call over there “Sucker Trucks” or as we call them Jetter Vac Trucks. I am interested in these shows because my business uses the products and equipment displayed at a show like WETT and it’s great being able to meet and chat with the guys that do the same stuff we do here but from other parts of the world; it’s amazing how we all have to deal with the same sort of problems but on different continents.

Inversion relining systems

Shaft driven drain cleaners are the next big thing

I was lucky enough to attend as a guest of Nuflow America who is the parent company of a franchise relining system we own. Our journey started on a Saturday night as we departed Brisbane and embarked on 28 hours of travel, arriving at 6.00am in Indianapolis on Sunday, and lobbing up to the hotel Omni Severin in downtown Indianapolis praying they would let us have our rooms. Losing a day does your head in, not to mention the jet lag, so it goes without saying that we did a bit of sleeping once we got to our rooms. Monday was registration day and the show attendees could attend training and information sessions, which gave them points to the CPD programs the various states have. We registered and after one interesting session about how to work with and encourage millennials, we were bounced out because my show pass was an exhibitor pass. The choice was to pay US$25 per session

Franchis or go for a wander es are b ig in the around Indianapolis: the US walkabout won. On Monday night we were invited to a meet and greet with our American host at an O’Reilly’s Irish Bar just around the corner from our hotel. A good night must have been had by all as we got home at around 3:00am. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were the days the main Relining demonstrations display floor opened and we had an opportunity to see all the good stuff and find those little things that you want to bring home. Things like the latest in shaft driven drain cleaners, UV curing systems for relining, and swimming camera systems for tank inspections and cleaning. Tuesday night was the big night out for the show with music, food and beer supplied over at Lucas Oil Stadium, where you could have a go at kicking a goal in an authentic NFL stadium or change a tyre in record time on a Nascar. Timber water main During my couple of hours at the stadium party, I only saw less than a dozen people manage to kick a goal. They have a lot of armchair experts over there. Wednesday night was a night out with the Nuflow Australia boys at a very hipster bar called Union 50 – the food and beer were great. After a bit of a recovery day we headed off to Phoenix, Arizona on our way home to drop in and see a couple of guys that built one of Nuflow America’s most successful relining companies. We’ll keep that story for another day. The reason I have shared this experience is because we only live once. Don’t wait until retirement to do some of this stuff; some of us won’t make it that far and for most of us a trip like this can be a tax deduction if planned right.
