Mateo Gómez Unda (Bogotá 1989) studied Design in Los Andes University, top 5 university of Latin— America (2008-2013). After his 5th semester and having several academic recognition, List of Best ECAES, and 17 times best student in different classes, decided to start his second degree in Architecture (2012-2015). Later in 2016, after finishing two architecture bio-constructions in Colombia, he decided to travel to Greece where he live up to this day. He specialized in UI-Design with the university of Minnesota (2016-2017). Currently he works as an architect and a designer in the historical heart of Athens. His greatest interest is based on social change; specially in how architecture and design can lead the way to a better relationship between humans and nature. He has experience in architecture biodesign, wood and bamboo construction, photo/ video, branding and web designing.

I want to believe that we can make a better place. Not a place for the 1%, nor actually for human kind; a better place for all the beings who breath in this blue floating sphere. We must learn to unlearn and forget “universal truths” that helped us get where we are. We need to re-write the meaning of many words: success, development, ownership, love.

P O RT F O L I O · M AT E O G Ó M E Z U N D A

We must learn the intagibility of the concept “other”, as we are all connected. Every phrase will beging with the word “we” and we will forget ate the end that once we were 7 billion “me”. I believe in art -design and architecture- as a powerful path for social change. A way that doesn’t impose but leads different thought, perceptions, questions and actions.

Aldeafeliz is an Eco-village, a sustainable human settlement that promotes community-life and the wealth of the environment and natural resources. It is a hilly terrain with a crystal water river passing though. “Luna” is my sister’s country—tree house. The design seeks to be in harmony with her personal-spiritual beliefs. The house is a one-space room, 5 meters above the ground and it crosses three trees. The design creates a unique space to each of the trees, which gives each one of them a different role. The first that is located on the bridge/terrace gives the tree the role of roof (protection). The second space, in the vestibule, gives the tree the role of guardian. The third, inside the house, is the heart, where everything revolves around. *This project is under construction.

Year 2015 Location Bogota, Colombia University Andes University My role Final Architectural Graduation Project

P O RT F O L I O · M AT E O G Ó M E Z U N D A

The idea was born from the juxtaposition of two concepts; one esthetical and the other philosophical; mutualism and leisure. More specifically, mutualism is a type of association between two different species in which both members benefits ‹‹mutually››. Therefore, mutualist architecture, explores the question “How old and new architecture can benefit mutually” ? On the other hand, leisure is a concept that I borrowed from the ”Fun Palace”, a multipurpose building where people could be productive doing whatever they wanted to do. An approach that implies that happiness and productivity can go hand by hand. For all the above, leisure became the theme of my project. I was thrilled to explore answers to questions such as: “What will people do when they are asked to do nothing? Will people be productive when there is no one to demand anything from them?

“So let’s build a building of light” “There were a lot of factors and ideas that fed the concept of Luciernaga. The idea was to create an inflatable structure, that would be easily carried and transported from one location to another, but that would be rigid enough to, protect and sustain life inside. The structure would have to be made of a material that would insulate the cold, but allow the penetration of light, and parallel to that, create an unobstructed view of the landscape. With this in mind, it was also decided that this structure would be built with light, so that in the night, it would be a symbol of life. During the day, the structure would allow light in, and the landscape to be seen, and during the night, all the light would be emitted back to the landscape, and a sign, in the empty darkness, would be seen all across. Different layers of transparencies would correspond with the different levels of privacy. The pavilion would be transparent to permit light, but the rooms, opaque, to allow privacy but not darkness. The building would also be modular. We wanted to take into account the possibility of expansion. Like cells, the building will allow the growth into new space. The idea of creating a city, made of molecules, that could exist together, but also alone, was born.

ANTARCTICA FOR 2

(OR MORE, UNTIL IT’S 1 TOO MANY…) Theater-Piece In Words Only, For 2 Actors At A Podium + Lights Whitechapel Gallery, London, Feb 2011

“(A:) So let’s build a building of light: it could be a bundle of light, loops of light — or it could be points of light, the ends of extending tubes of light, like periscopes of light. When a plane comes in, these lights guide the landing… (A:) Think of the building as a landing field: not for planes really, but for information – information from the skies comes down to land here, information can be pulled down from the stars… (B:) But we don’t need light to watch the skies; let’s build a building that turns on and off – the lights turn off, and we disappear into nothingness as we watch the lights of the sky… (A:) The building-on-stilts is dead: there’s no need for telescoping supports, no need for the building to rise over the ice as the ice accumulates — long live the building that rides the ice, long live the building that floats… (B:) Let’s build a building that’s a balloon, a balloon that’s a building… (A:) Let’s build a building that rolls with the punches. It’s a balloon-within-a-balloon, a sphere-within-a-sphere: as the outer sphere turns and shifts while rolling over the ice, the inner sphere remains stable, horizontal… (A:) Sometimes the balloons roll apart from each other, like space-capsules, like personal space-bubbles; for passage between them, a tubular bridge can telescope, stretch, from one to the other… (B:) Let’s build a city of molecules… (B:) Questions rise to the surface, like tiny flies: what level of impact is required…how much energy will be spent…Think, analyze, diagram, calculate… (A/B together:) The building is like a glow inside a mountain, a secret world inside the mountain, undetected from the outside. Each room is a different kind of light, a different color of light; it’s the light that makes the room, shapes the room – the room doesn’t need walls to separate itself, it’s the light that separates the room. We walk from room to room, from hard light to soft light, from still light to variable light, from one color into another. Once our work is done for the day, we have some time to relax.”

Year 2016 Location Bogota, Colombia Address Cra15 no. 69 - Chapinero Client Inversuna ltda. Team Carlos Ignacio Unda My role Architectural design

P O RT F O L I O · M AT E O G Ó M E Z U N D A

There are several different factors that determined the conception and design of this building. The most important of them was that the width of the external facade is only 8m wide. Furthermore, this limitation lead the design to create spaces that could behave in different ways; creating harmony between activities that traditionally are not linked. The building can be divided into two sectors: The first sector is “services and vertical circulation”. However, this space is also a place of permanence; a balcony with vegetation and unrestricted air entry, that turns it into a fresh, isolated and enjoyable space. In adition, this place is mixed with the vertical circulation, which crosses the entire facade, but due to the lightness of the staircase, it doesn’t block neither the view nor the natural light. The second sector is a highly flexible open plan with the ability to increase its load of water and electrical supplies. *This project is under construction.

Tales of how I got here

When I came to age, it took some time to decide weather I wanted to study Architecture (as my aunt once said) or Biology. I waited until the last day, and so, in the last hour, my father asked me ”So, should I enroll you in Architecture or in Biology” I left the car, closed the door, and from the outside, I said: lets start with design.

Lumiwings is a new greek airline. It required an identity design as well as livery design for their first aircraft - a Boeing 737-300. The logo and consequent applications attempt to deconstruct the impression one has when viewing the sunset (or sunrise) through the fuselage window. At the same time, a tribute to classic Greek icons such as the sun and the waves is paid.

“BOICOT BACATA” DESIGN FOR SOCIAL CHANGE #CO-DESIGN #SOCIAL-CHANGE #BOICOT #BOGOTA # #SOCIAL-EXPERIMENT #DESIGN-CHANG #CREATIVITY

Year 2012 Location Bogota, Colombia University Andes University My role Final Design Graduation Project

P O RT F O L I O · M AT E O G Ó M E Z U N D A

The brief of 2012 involved the exploration, analysis and posterior design and execution of any idea someone desired to explore. As open as it may sounds, the real challenge was to finally allow yourself to define your personal approach to the word “Design”. My project meant to explore the idea of creating a mechanism for social change through creative thinking in a large communal chain of co-design. So it all begins by starting a movement that I called “Boicot Bacata” (Boba). The main objective of BoBa was to give the tools to a community to change by themselves undesired social behaviors. BoBa, was more than a product design, it was a social experiment on creative-thinking and innovation. Firstly, I had to understand the roll of creativity in social atmospheres and then to discover the way people share ideas freely. The following project is a sample of all the ideas stated above; it involved the participation of over 600 people and became an statement that social change could be made by anyone, anywhere, and no matter the budget and the restrictions.
