Subtracting a Fraction from a Whole Number Subtracting a Fraction from a Whole Number Subtracting a Fraction from a Whole Number is the concept that helps the student not only during their studies but also in their day today life. It should be very clear to the student that how a fraction is subtracted from the whole number .There are some rules that are followed by the students for subtraction of a fraction from whole number. We can understand it by some examples that are as follows : If there is an expression as 1- 3 / 4 then it will be solved by follow some steps : Step no 1 : First write the expression as all the terms are in fraction and find the LCM of the numbers in the expression as 1 – 3 / 4 = 1 / 1 – 3 / 4 (since ,1 / 1 = 1) then calculate the LCM of 1 and 4 as their LCM is 4 Step no 2 : divide the calculated LCM with the denominator of each fraction value as 4 / 1 = 4 and 4/4=1 Know ore About :- Dividing a Whole Number by a Decimal

then multiply the answer with the numerator of each fraction as 4 * 1 = 4 and 1 * 3 = 3 so it will be written as : 4–3 1 --------- = ---- (answer) . 4 4 If take one another example in which take the fraction that is a mixed fraction that is subtracted from the whole number as 2 4 – 1 --5 here in this expression we subtract the mixed fraction from the whole number and for solving this type of problem here are some steps as follows : Step no 1 : first change the whole number into the fraction form and the mixed fraction into the improper fraction as in the above given expression 4 is also written as 4 / 1 and mixed fraction is written as 7 / 5 and rewrite the expression as 4 / 1 – 7 / 5 = ? Now solve the expression as defined above calculate the LCM of the denominator of fractions means calculate the LCM of 1 and 5 that is 5. Step no 2 : then divide the LCM by denominator and then multiply the answer with the numerator respectively as : Divide LCM 5 by denominator 1 as 5 / 1 = 5 and multiply 5 with the numerator 4 as 5 * 4 = 20 Divide LCM 5 by denominator 5 as 5 / 5 = 1 and multiply 1 with the numerator 7 as 1 * 7 = 7 then it is write as (20 – 7)/ 5 = 13 / 5 (answer). Subtracting fraction from the whole number is used when some situations like if we have the money that is not necessary in whole number sometimes it will into the fractions then the concept of subtraction or addition is used .So whenever we need to subtract the fraction from whole number first of all change all the values into the fraction as in whole number changed by put the denominator as one .
