eating for
nutritionwhilstbreastfeeding Healthy eating is important when breastfeeding your new baby. When you’re lacking in sleep and have loads of other commitments to also think about, the reality is that healthy eating may not be always high on your priority list. Emma Owers provides some fast facts and tips for improving your diet and ensuring that you and your baby have the right nutrition for breastfeeding.
energy&exercise Your body has high energy requirements when you are breastfeeding (usually ~2000 kilojoules higher than the adult woman’s daily energy needs) so it is not recommended that you follow a weight loss diet after childbirth as breastfeeding already allows for natural and gradual weight loss. Most breastfeeding women can do exercise without affecting their breast milk supply. If feeding straight after physical activity, your baby may seem more unsettled due to a small
amount of lactic acid in the breast milk. This is not harmful for your baby and levels usually drop within 2 hours. It is important to drink plenty of fluid when breastfeeding, especially if you are also exercising, in order to keep up your milk supply. You will need at least an additional 700mL fluid per day (equivalent to a minimum of 9 cups per day of fluid).

higher energy and nutrient requirements and consume a variety of different foods from all of the food groups including vegetables, fruit, wholegrain breads and cereals, lean meat, fish, poultry and/or alternatives and reduced fat dairy products. Limit salt intake and consume moderate amounts of sugars or foods containing added sugar. Here is a quick guide for you on how many serves from each food group are needed to meet your daily nutrient requirements:
Your body has a greater need for some nutrients when you are breastfeeding including: Protein: Important for the growth, maintenance & repair of cells. Found in: Meat, fish, poultry & alternatives, eggs, dairy, legumes, nuts & a small amount in breads and cereals.
Vitamin B6: Needed for the formation of red blood cells. Found in: Meat, poultry, fish, wholegrains & some green vegetables. Vitamin A: Promotes normal growth & helps to prevent infections. Found in: Milk, cheese, egg, oily fish, orange/yellow vegetables & fruits, spinach & broccoli.

Some foods that you eat during breastfeeding can adversely affect your baby.
how long should you breastfeed for?
Alcohol: an occasional drink is not harmful, however it is advised to avoid alcohol for the first month after you have your baby. Alcohol can pass into your breast milk within half an hour so to minimise its effects, keep to 1 standard drink per day, choose low alcohol drinks where possible, eat before and while drinking and avoid breastfeeding for two to three hours after drinking. Alternatively, drink alcohol immediately after you have finished breastfeeding
According to the World Health Organization’s recommendations, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first six months of a baby’s life. After this period, further breastfeeding is recommended to supplement the baby’s nutrition while the baby is gradually introduced to solid foods.
Caffeine: can cause your baby to be unsettled or irritable as it also passes into your milk supply. Coffee, strong tea, cola and guarana energy drinks should be limited to 2-4 drinks per day.
If you have any further concerns regarding your diet and breastfeeding, seek advice from: • Your doctor • An accredited practising dietician (www.daa.asn.au) • Maternal & Child Health centre • Lactation consultant • Aus. Breastfeeding Assoc. (www.breastfeeding.asn.au)

always eat breakfast
1
Don’t miss it at this time of year. Always start the day with a good breakfast that will help to kick-start your metabolism.
2
am i hungry?
Eating when we aren’t hungry means we miss our body’s natural cues. Many of us fall into the habit of eating when we’re bored, eating out of convenience or eating because we’ve had a bad day. At this time of year eating nibblies at a party is something that you can allow yourself. The trick is to think about the other foods or courses to come, portion sizes and mindless eating. If you’re going to eat snacks - enjoy them being conscious of how delicious they are, the smell and texture. Use all your senses and don’t forget to CHEW your food. This might sound strange – but CHEW more. It will help!! Once you’ve had the opportunity to enjoy and notice how absolutely fabulous they are, move onto the next item or stop. I promise you there is more delicious food coming! After all you don’t have to follow the lessons of your childhood; no one is telling you “you have to eat EVERYTHING on your plate before you can have desert!” Stop to ask yourself “Am I hun-
gry?” and focus on stopping when you have had enough.

Each day we need around 2 litres (8 glasses). Not only is this good for our body, it can actually make you feel full. When you think you’re hungry, chances are your body is actually thirsty and dehydrated. Don’t wait to drink until you feel thirsty. The easiest way to get that kick start is to drink two glasses of water with a squeeze of lemon FIRST THING in the morning yes before you’re properly awake and before you go near food. This is a great habit to start do it for 21 days and see the difference!
4
divert your energy
What non-eating activities can you do during this time of year? If you’re getting ready to go out to a Christmas event, turn the music on and move while you get ready. Our goal is to get in the habit of moving more. It takes only 21 days to create a habit so do something everyday - even something as little as when you’re in front of the TV try knitting, Pilates, yoga or if you have one, ride an exercise bike or treadmill. Don’t forget to
25
park your car further away from work or the shops, take the stairs instead of the lift try all sorts of little things to move more!
declutter your pantry
5
This is really important to help move your sabotage foods out of the house - especially at this time of year. I bet you don’t even need to open the pantry to tell me what they are. Support your efforts and get them out! Get my free guide to get started with your pantry declutter.
6
get meals organised!
Get lunches and healthy snacks organised for everyday eating. The key to helping you stay on track at this time of year is to have healthy lunches and snacks readily available in your home for everyday eating. For lunches try salads, quiches, boiled eggs, tuna. For snacks carrot and celery sticks, home made popcorn without butter, fruits, or a make-your-own trail mix with raisins, nuts, and dried fruits. This is a great time of year to balance out the FEASTive season eating by introducing healthy habits so you don’t have to feel guilty about enjoying the beautiful foods and celebrations this time of year offers!

feathered fun for your little chickens!
The Christmas school holidays are just around the corner but there’s no need to get your tinsel in a tangle – entertaining the troops is child’s play if you introduce some feathered friends into the fold. Our Kitchen Garden’s Susan Volz shows how easy it is to engage, inspire and educate your little chickens from chook to cook with their very own flock of feathered friends.

choose
It may be the school holidays but still get the kids to do their homework before they choose their new feathered family members. It’s not all about looks when it comes to your chooks – hardiness, temperament and broodiness should all be taken into consideration when selecting a suitable breed. The Pekin is a fuss-free family favourite. Distinguished by their feathered feet, the Pekin is a true Bantam breed originating from China. They are exceptionally quiet, non-flighty, gentle natured, easily handled and require minimal space. The hens are attentive mothers and regular brooders, producing a reliable supply of small cream eggs. Pick a Pekin and there will be no need to shell out on your normal supermarket eggs this holiday season!
prepare
Just like the homegrown scrambled eggs to come, your coop design should be light and airy. Ensure there is sufficient light to keep your chickens warm and enough ventilation to keep foul smells at bay, being mindful not to expose them to any prevailing winds. Covering the floor with straw or sawdust will also help with unpleasant odours and allow for easier cleanup. This soiled base is great for the compost heap too! Fit your hen haven with nest boxes for egg laying and perches on which the birds can sleep. Incorporate an adjoining outdoor run with room for your flock to feed, scratch and dust bath or alternatively, let them roam free but be sure to guard your yard. Free range does not have to mean free reign! Stake off fragile garden areas to keep curious chickens from running amok.
keep
Looking after chickens is as easy as ABC and definitely an eggsellent pet project for the kids these school holidays. • Ensure your chickens always have clean water • Keep your chicken coop clean by removing leftover scraps, scraping surfaces free of droppings and regularly washing all food and water dishes • Feed your chickens twice dai-
A well-appointed chicken coop or hen house is essential when laying the groundwork for happy healthy chickens. Not only does an enclosed shelter provide them with protection from the elements but also predators.
ly with specialised poultry feed, available as pellets or grain from most produce merchants or pet supply stores. • Be sure to supplement commercial poultry food with kitchen scraps. Your trash is their treat!
enjoy
Let your flock fly the coop and and enjoy watching them hard at work in the garden. They will scratch to turn over compost and aerate the soil as well as eat weeds. They produce fantastic natural fertiliser and also provide a great pest control service but it’s their egg delivery service that really earns them their keep. Healthy hens realise great eggspectations and there’s nothing more rewarding than being on collection duty. Enlist the kids to check the nesting boxes at least one a day, twice if possible. And so they appreciate the entire pen to pan process, let them have a crack at their own egg-inspired cook up. Our Kitchen Garden’s live chicken and chicken related products will help you hatch a plan for a cracking Christmas in the hen house. Visit ourkitchengarden.com.au
From penthouse to portable, there is a range of pre-fabricated designs on the market but building your own chicken coop makes a cracking holiday project for the family.

The holiday season is just around the corner and it’s safe to say that most of us will be travelling at some point to see family and friends. We’ve chatted with the team from Galmatic to get their top travel safety tips for this holiday season.

tips for safe
• Water bottles should be soft – hard ones are potential projectile objects
We have all been driven to our wits ends with crying and non-stop car chatter, so how do you keep the kids happy and safe in the car?
• All books and toys should be soft and preferably made of cloth
A
ccording to Eleni Mitakos, from Galmatic even the most basic of food and entertainment options can be lethal in an accident situation so it pays to plan ahead for your travel. “Safe driving is all about risk management. Reduce the risks by driving to the road rules; keep a check on your driving by scanning ahead and using your mirrors. Keep the cabin free of hard objects, keep your handbag on the floor and turn off the mobile phone – no phone calls or sms is more important than the safety of your family”
top travel tips are: • Books with hard covers and hand held video games can be projectile objects in the event of emergency braking and can severely injure a child • When feeding children in cars avoid hard lunch boxes – instead wrap soft food in baking paper and pack in brown paper bags
• Talk to children about road rules and what you are doing from day one. Why are you waiting at the red arrow, braking, stopping and who do you give way to at a roundabout
She advises parents to use the following checklists:
• Is the seat belt buckle connected? • Is the seat belt adjusted correctly? • Is there any twist or slack in the harness? • Is the angular aspect OK? • Is there any slack in the upper tether strap? • Are there any loose items that might hurt your child?
• Has your child outgrown their restraint? • Are your child’s shoulders above the strap slots?
E
leni also suggests that pre-holidays is the perfect time to recheck your child car restraints. She advised, “The most important thing to remember about child car restraints is that the restraint is only effective if used correctly. Even if you had your child car seat professionally fitted, the restraints move when a car brakes, accelerates quickly, when the kids get in and out, when you ‘test’ it with a shake and even when you vacuum underneath it.”
• Don’t use poppers – the straw can blind a child with an emergency brake. Same goes with lollipops
29
• Do the inserts effect safe harness adjustment?
E
leni and her team from Galmatic are committed to safe driving and are proud to offer car care workshops just for women and defensive driving courses for women. Visit their website www.galmatic.com.au for further information.

hen your mother is the Mathilda’s magnate – you know your birthday party is going to be a creative one!
For Riley, turning 7 meant a Lego celebration with mates as a must-have party accessory. Using paper art and clever theming to create their very own Lego Land, the Zelensky family also sought to implement a consistent colour theme of yellow, red, green and blue. As one would imagine, food for a boys party was somewhat of a priority and Riley’s party did not disappoint with cheerios, cheese and tomato toasties,

vegemite pinwheels and red, yellow and green jelly cups. The decorations were simple but highly effective. Capitalising upon the flexibility and pliability of paper art, party theming included Lego party cake toppers, food labels, red and white striped straws, straw flags, cheese toastie labels and Lego block favour boxes. And as the photos show – it’s pretty clear that these little Lego men were thrilled with the event!
top party tips You don’t need to spend a fortune on decorations. Be clever with décor and food to create block colours for maximum impact. Use paper! It’s pliable, colourful, affordable and will allow you to create favours, labels and invitations to your theme. All you need is a colour printer and a little bit of imagination! Lollies don’t maketh the party so to speak. There are plenty of other “fun” and colourful foods that the kids will love just as much. Use labels, straws and boxes to make the healthier food just as novel.

Sleepy Place
Sleep,
Create a soothing & welcoming nursery for your little one.
slumber, forty winks... We all need it, including the smallest members of our families. From newborns to infants, a sleeping baby is essential for maintaining a happy and healthy family environment. We asked international childcare expert and author of Save Our Sleep, Tizzie Hall to give our readers her top tips for sleeping babies.
Follow a routine from as early as possible, babies feel safe and secure if they know what & when things are going to happen
Always feed your baby until your baby is full, never restrict the amount of breast, formula milk & solids you give your baby Catnapping can be caused by hunger, coldness or too little awake time. If you put your baby to bed at the first sign of tiredness your baby might be tired enough to nap but not tired enough to sleep
Boondie Baby
www.boondiebaby.com
Tizzie Hall’s book, Save Our Sleep, is available for purchase through all major bookstores. Published by Macmillan Australia. RRP $34.99
Always put your baby to sleep where you intend for your baby to wake up. Or your baby will wake up be confused and not get to the next sleep cycle
Make sure your baby is warm enough to sleep safely and well. Too little bedding can cause an older baby to roll to the unsafe sleeping position of his or her tummy

Lauren from Boondie Baby suggests that quality linens & nursery sets add a unique touch to any nursery. She says, “Quality linens are a personal welcome from you to your baby. The materials are just so important – you should be confident they will launder well, won’t shrink, leak colour or ball.” Lauren adds, “We put a lot of love, time and effort into our handmade nursery sets for that very reason. Every child should be entitled to their own unique set of linen – what better way to encourage sleep!” We love the Boondie Baby range of cushions, bedding and soft toys. Be sure to explore their website and discover their linen range for yourself.

ecently, a mum posted this dilemma to the Parent Wellbeing website:
“Pre-school goes back tomorrow and that feeling of dread is creeping upon me. My daughter is now hysterically crying in anticipation of pre-school tomorrow. She is so negative about it and so adamant she wants me to stay with her all day, and please mummy, please I want to stay home with you. Another morning of guilt for dragging my unwilling participant off to pre-school. Any handy tips?”
this was my reply: “My biggest tip is to behave and feel the way you want your child to behave and feel. If you are calm and confident, you will help your child be calm and confident too. Also, talk to your child and pre-empt what is going to happen. Say something like: “We’ll go off to pre-school and see (name a friend or one of the carers). We’ll put your bag away, and then would you like to play with the blocks or puzzles first? I’ll go off to the shops, and I’ll be back to pick you up at the end of the session.”
B
ehave like pre-school is a good place to be. That doesn’t mean that your child will immediately go with it. But every time you behave in a consistent way, they will slowly get the picture. Behave the same way every time you go to preschool, and keep reinforcing a good experience.” Here is what happened next: “This morning went pretty darn well actually. My daughter’s behaviour was pretty much the same but I remained confident and positive throughout, and I could see her mind ticking over and almost looks
And one more update: “Not sure who that little girl was I just dropped off at Kindy? I like her though, happy and confident! She didn’t even turn around when I said good bye!”
of confusion on her face. I would say there were less tears than usual, and I have felt great all day. And I had a very relaxed day with my other daughter!”
“behave the way you want your child to behave. If you are calm & confident, you will help your child be calm & confident too” And then this: “HUGE SUCCESS! Her bestie wasn’t there today but she made some new friends, and had a great day. She couldn’t stop smiling and talking when I got there to pick her up! She was by far the happiest she has been at pick up time! I’m looking forward to next week so we can keep practising these new techniques. I am absolutely chuffed!” And then this: “Another update: We went to Playgroup today and bumped into one of my daughter’s teachers. We were talking about an upcoming excursion and my daughter pipes up, “Mum, I don’t want you to come on the excursion I want to go all by myself because I am so brave.” May the confidence continue!”
39
emotions are contagious. Your anxiety can spill over to your children. If you are confident, your children will learn to be confident too. If your child is angry and frustrated, it’s easy to react back with anger and frustration. But rather than diffuse the situation, this reaction is likely to create even more anger and frustration. When you remain calm and when you maintain confidence, you are showing your children how to behave. When raising our kids, it’s not really about managing your kids. It’s about managing yourself.
it’s about: • Living by the values

There’s nothing like home-baked gifts at Christmas time and your junior masterchefs will love baking and boxing their creations. Forget the beer, we hear Santa has a sweet tooth this year, so be sure to leave out some Caramel Biscuits as seen on the Mathilda’s Market blog (www.mathildasmarket.blogspot.com)
christmas caramel biscuits Ingredients 60g unsalted butter 115g golden syrup 60g brown sugar 225g SR flour 8 soft jersey caramels, halved
Method Heat oven to 180 degrees. Place butter, syrup and sugar in a saucepan over low heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Set aside to cool. Add the flour to the butter mixture and mix until a smooth dough forms. Roll tablespoonfuls into balls and place on lined baking trays. Press to flatten and top each with a half jersey caramel. Bake for 10-12 mins or until golden. Cool on trays. Makes 16. A simple piece of cellophane and some ribbon can turn these delicious treats into a beautiful, thoughtful present. Cooking is a fun and educational activity that allows you to bond with your children and produces lovely Christmas treats for visitors. And when visitors drop in, you’ll always have treats on hand that look and taste better than the packet of fruit mince left over from the work hamper.

holiday reading With some great new releases on the shelves, Meredith O’Connor has selected four new picture books guaranteed to engage the whole family.
Look See, Look at Me! Leonie Norrington and Dee Huxley 2010, Allan and Unwin RRP Hard cover $24.99
Look see, look at me! I’m so much bigger now I’m three. With a delightfully simple rhyming text, this book celebrates a young indigenous child’s achievements as he turns three. Dee Huxley’s flowing pastel illustrations on ochre coloured paper add to the sheer delight of this young child’s community life. Leonie Norrington grew up in an Aboriginal community south of Katherine, where she returned with Huxley to work on capturing the true essence of the land and the people. Perfect for reading aloud, it will appeal to children aged 2 to 4 years.
Press Here Herve Tullet 2010, Allen and Unwin RRP Hardcover $19.99
The Prince of Preschool, Herve Tullet, returns with a little gem of a book. Tullet’s ingenious take on picture books brings about a whole new level of interactivity. In an age where e-books, smart phones and touch screens dominate, Press Here engages the reader in a manner never before seen. With every turn of the page the reader is enticed to do as the text says, seemingly bringing about a change on the next page. Tullet has uniquely capitalised on the technological era by bringing a level of interactivity to the humble paper back. Great book – enjoyed by children and adults alike.

To the Top End – Our Trip Across Australia Roland Harvey 2011, Allen and Unwin RRP $15.99
Roland Harvey has long been a favourite in Australia. He returns with a book which appears quite simple on the surface, but scratch a little deeper and you could spend hours exploring our wide brown land. Uncle Kev, mum and dad and the kids embark on a holiday trek across Australia – from the wilds of Tasmania, across to the Murray, the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, the Great Barrier Reef and more. Beautifully illustrated in water colour, this is a step away from the usual style for Harvey. Typically a ‘busy’ illustrator with great detail, this picture book is less complex, yet still full of detail to explore. Harvey also challenges the usual print conventions of left to right, scattering text throughout the pictures further enticing the reader’s attention to detail. Suitable for 5 to 10 years

Reading to Baby Louise Stewart discusses the many rewards of reading to babies.
W
e are all encouraged to read to children from birth and these days it is common for people to begin reading in utero. There is a plethora of research available regarding the long-term benefits of reading to babies so in this article I am not going to labour this point (pun intended). Often the pressure to constantly be teaching and promoting our babies development gets in the way of parents just enjoying the time spent with their baby. Reading time for babies is as much, if not more, about cuddling time as it is ‘good literacy’ practice. But reading to babies does produce for parents many rewards. In just a short few months we see our babies learning to love their reading time. The reactions from the baby, tiny at first, grow as they hear the stories again and again a flicker of recognition spreads across their face and eventually they begin to smile, coo, even squeal with excitement at a muchloved story, picture or phrase. On the imminent arrival of my child, I decided to deal with the issue of gifts by just telling people I wanted their favourite children’s books as presents. I suppose at the time I was being particularly precious about what
clothes and baby accessories I wanted to buy but as an ex-teacher I was also genuinely interested to know what baby books people bought and why. What I ended up with was a collection of books from all eras, different countries and with limitless stories. Sure there was the classic Dr Seuss but there were also books that were heart-warming, funny, educational and serious. But even more precious than the books and readymade library that I had been given were the stories people told about why these books were their favourites. Some said family had bought books back from overseas and this was why they were special. Others remember their beloved siblings reading it to them as babies and some people recall stories of a parent that had passed away reading these books to them and how much they treasure those memories. So when I read these books to my daughter it is more than just an exercise in good literacy practice it is about bonding and sharing the stories behind these books and the people who bought them for her. I hope that she treasures the memory as much as the stories.

S
o here is a list of my daughter’s favourite baby books (not in any particular order): Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See by Bill Martin with illustrations by Eric Carle was first published in 1986 and is a popular tome amongst Early Years teachers. The beauty of this book is in the simple repetition of the text and the vibrantly coloured tissue-paper collage of each animal. Reading the book while making the animal noises makes for a joyful reading time with baby. There is also a beautiful reading of the book by the author Bill Martin on YouTube. Mem Fox is the author of the Australian classic, Koala Lou. My daughter was at first enamoured with the gorgeous coloured-pencil drawings of the bush animals that inhabit Koala Lou’s world but the repetition of the line, ‘Koala Lou, I do love you’, sends her into shrieks and giggles. It is a perfect read before bedtime. Peepo, an English children’s book by Janet and Allan Ahlberg is a favourite for many readers as much for the nostalgic setting of the book, 1940’s England, as for the fun of watching the little baby in the story play ‘peepo’ throughout his day. The book has strategically placed peep
holes which the baby sees life through, his little bed, his push chair and sister’s knee. My daughter loves the rhyme and repetition of this story and with the little peepholes she gets quite excited about what comes next. This is a family favourite. Cluck O’Clock by Kes Gray is a tell-the-time book but with chickens! It’s a fun read for both babies, with the frenetic pace of the rhyme and rhythm, and adults with the tongue-in-cheek humour. The book is set on a farm and describes a day in the life of the chickens and their companions. The website Little Family Fun describes activities you can do with children after reading the book. Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel, published in 1968, tells the fable of why Chinese children have short names. My daughter enjoys the frequent repetition; making it easy to
remember. She is also entertained by hearing Tikki Tikki Tembo’s very long name each time. This book will be entertaining for your child whether they are 6 months or 4 years. The plot is exciting and the illustrations exotic. A word of warning however, it is not culturally accurate. If you’re looking for something more animated there is a beautiful shadow puppet show of the story on YouTube. The King the Mice and the Cheese by Nancy Gurney, published in 1965 tells the story of the King who is trying to eradicate mice from his kingdom but his wise men keep coming up with solutions that make the problem worse. The repetition of story elements and funny illustrations make this an enjoyable read for the whole family. My daughter loves me making the animals noises while we read.
47
Finally a series of board books that are short but sweet and appropriate for very young babies. My daughter owns In My Tree and In My Meadow about an owl and a rabbit. Each story follow a baby animal through their day and are told through diecut pages with a puppet that children can follow through the book. Needless to say the puppets are very cute and a big hit with baby as are the adorable illustrations. There are nine in the series. This is not a definitive list. There are hundreds of fantastic books for babies and children however when you find the ones your child loves reading, you treasure them. By the way this list does come highly recommended by a very young, avid reader.
happy reading!

PlayConnect P
laygroups are an integral part of the weekly life of thousands of young children and their families throughout Australia. Playgroups as we know them exist in many forms and have many different names including Playgroups which operate under the banner of PlayConnect. PlayConnect Playgroups are for families of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or whose children are exhibiting ASD-like behaviours. These specialised Playgroups are delivered by Playgroup Australia in partnership with the State and Territory Playgroup Associations.
The singing, craft activities and storytelling are just as you’d find at other Playgroups around the country, except the structure of the gathering is tailored to meet the specific needs of the children attending. The groups are guided by a facilitator and are free for families to attend. Even better, no formal diagnosis of an ASD is required. The PlayConnect Program was set up by Playgroup Australia in 2008 when the Australian Government provided $4.5 million in funding for the delivery of these Playgroups as part of their $190 million “Helping
Mathilda’s Magazine // Christmas 2011 www.mathildasmarket.com.au
48
Children with Autism” package. By mid-2011, 150 PlayConnect Playgroups had been established throughout Australia and to date they have been attended by around 1700 families with children from birth to six years.
A
ll PlayConnect Playgroups generally meet weekly for around two hours. The group provides children with the opportunity to engage and interact in an exclusive environment free from judgment where they are free to play and learn about their world while mastering skills,
behaviours and strategies to help them later in life. PlayConnect Playgroups also offer a support network for parents, providing them with information and strategies to promote their child’s development through play and enabling them to value their own worth. Parents and carers meet with other families who are in a similar situation and share experiences and information on early intervention programs and support services.
E
ach group is set up to include the whole family, including siblings, grandparents and other family members who often help provide much needed support and care for the children. Research consistently illustrates the value of play for the social, cognitive, emotional and physical development for all children. Play in a social environment can be challenging for children with an ASD due to their difficulties with communication, managing change and understanding others. One of the reasons the PlayConnect program has enjoyed such success is that it operates to reflect the individualized needs of the families and children who attend each week.
For more information about the PlayConnect program in your State or to form a PlayConnect Playgroup call 1800 171 882 or visit www.playconnect.com.au Playgroup Australia is the peak body recognised as the leading voice for Playgroups in Australia. Working with our State and Territory Playgroup Association members, our vision is that all Australians value the benefits of Playgroups to nurture young children, connect families and build communities through play.
Ned’s Story Ned was two when he was diagnosed with autism. While I was upset, I was also relieved as I just knew something wasn’t right. Early invention plays a major role in helping his development so by being diagnosed at an early age, we were able to access much needed funding for speech and OT services. It is harder as Ned gets older, as it has become more obvious how different he is to other kids his age, but I forget about that every time he smiles at me as I know he is truly happy. One of the biggest problems we face with Ned is the limited ability to go out in public with him, which is having a major impact on what we can do as a family. Currently we really only go out to family or friends houses – something as simple as going to the corner store for milk is a problem! Ned has been very fortunate of late and has qualified for an Autism Assistance Dog. The dog will help him to deal with unfamiliar environments by helping to prevent tantrums and
49
meltdowns due to sensory overload. It will also provide us with the security of knowing we can help keep him safe and restrained in public. The dog will help Ned deal with unfamiliar environments by helping to prevent tantrums and meltdowns caused by public and sensory overload, as well as offering added security – currently we have to keep him restrained somewhere when out in public. The dog will also help with Ned’s social and language development. At nearly 4 years old, Ned has the language skills of a 12-month-old baby. It will give him a best friend, something he has never known other than his brothers. Michaela Clark, QLD.
