VOICE BY CHAIRPERSON People must be at the centre- stage of any development activity, be partners in their change. Experience shows that the practical first step be Learning, via Education & Literacy, this would then lead on to better standard of life , with other interventions like Livelihood, Skills, Entrepreneurship, Health Interventions, Flexible/Alternative Learning Strategies, coming together to give confidence to our target groups, to improve their attitudes for a positive future. Since the last 18 years Bunyad has seen positive results, where they were active in, aiming to have sustainability activity, with the Communities they have worked with The District Line Departments have been involved in our work, that the collective effort for poverty alleviation, is not wasted. The condition of rural women & children has improved in the 66 years of our Countries history but much more effort is needed here , where climate change, water scarcity, unbridled population growth, unstable political atmosphere is giving little chance to families to pull out of poverty. But where Bunyad has worked in, the Communities have felt the difference & have been given confidence to take charge of their lives. In these days of doubt's, depression & recession, things are tough but the resilience of the Management of the Staff, of our Communities, is...strong. There is no greater delight than our women & children having some relief & faith that their future will improve. I would like to thank Qazi Isa CEO, of PPAF, for his guidance & support, Nadim Zaman, Dai-ILM, the many individual Donors, many others who supported Bunyad to change around 63000 lives...nothing could be done without them all.
Shaheen Attiq-ur-Rahman Vice Chairperson Bunyad Foundation

CHAPTER ONE
Education and Literacy Pakistan has a very low literacy rate and an extremely poor state of education. Which continues to keep the majority of our people in abject poverty.. The corner stone of BUNYAD‟s approach is Education and Literacy since its inception; it has developed and sustained programs for non-formal education & alternative /flexible learning. & promoting Girls & women‟s entry into this sector. The main focus is to give a second chance to the dropout, working, street, runaway, children and their illiterate adult females. Looking beyond Children alone, catering to older Children, mothers & older siblings is our focus. As retention of Children in the school is not quite possible , without a Literate mother, Learning is a continuous process, absorbing „all‟ age groups & not a one off, exercise This is the success of the ASEAN Region where there is a continuous process of Learning “from the womb to the tomb”. To reach LLL (Life Long Learning‟) BUNYAD has made many innovations to keep the interest of the Community alive…for Learning. Some benchmarks of Bunyad in Formal Education, NFEs and Literacy are:
The Improvement of Quality of Public Schools Establishing NFEs and Literacy Centers, especially AE (Adult Education) for Mothers /siblings. Promoting Non Formal Education, for drop-outs & never to school children. Developing Community Learning Centers Sustaining NFE/Literacy / Community Schools Capacity Building of School Teachers and Communities Developing School Improvement Plan Launching Universal Primary Education -UPE Developing Material (Readers, Curriculum, Syllabus, Supplementary books, post-literacy booklets, CDs, Manuals), to create a „reading habit. Mobile Based Literacy / Post literacy, including Financial Literacy.

CHAPTER TWO
Child Protection, Rehabilitation and Development With 43% of the population below the age of 14 and 65% living below the poverty line, the condition of our children is quite precarious. Few reach 5 years of schooling, infant mortality is quite high and they have few options for a comfortable and healthy future. Most children are working to support their families, the girl children often as early as 3 years help‟s in taking care of younger sibling‟s,. Children in the rural areas, are helping their families on the small land holdings they own, more are of families of land less tenants.. Bunyad is taking steps for protecting& developing CRC.
Establishing ECCE centers
Birth registration
Advocating against early marriages.
Establishing Child Care / Day Care Centers / Drop in Centers
Psycho social support , of Disaster affected/ hit children

Extra curricula activity .LSBE, .games, sports, skits, dramas…putting smiles on their faces.

CHAPTER THREE
Women Empowerment/ Micro Financing Economic empowerment of women is one of the issues which have been ignored, wherein more than 80 % are dependent on their families, unable to make any choice to improve themselves. Bunyad is providing a 3 pronged strategy with our targeted rural female groups, giving them Literacy, some skills & then micro enterprise .to make them become active in their own development & of their Families Bunyad believe that access to financial services, handling money is the acknowledged road to their empowerment, We realize that sustained empowerment comes from mix of financial and non financial services. Also that when women have some finances in their hand, they do send their Children to school, improve the nutrition level in their homes & so forth. Through this scheme underprivileged and impoverished families. Who are „ultra poor”, living below 1.25 $ daily income, are targeted. They are enabled to develop and improve their skills, its joint venture to help them earn a better livelihood &to become self dependent. Following are the services being rendered under Bunyad Micro Credit Programme
Provision of Small Loans Interest Free Loans to Ultra Poor Trainings on Money Management / Financial Literacy Capacity Building in business management Value chain Trainings on Domestic Technology Trade Base Training Maths to Marketing. Linking them to the Market, making them aware how to relate to market conditions. Asset transfer.
Bunyad Literacy Community Council - Annual Report 2012-13

CHAPTER FOUR
Livelihood Livelihood focusing on people, their capabilities and their means of living, including food, income and assets. Tangible assets are resources and stores, and intangible assets are claims and access. A livelihood is environmentally sustainable when it maintains or enhances the assets on which livelihoods depend, and has net beneficial effects on other livelihoods. Livelihood is socially sustainable which can cope with and recover from stress and shocks of market conditions, and provides for the well being of future generations. Bunyad Improving, Enhancing and Protecting Livelihood through capacity building, providing asserts and strengthening the business operations of poor to reduce the vulnerability & shocks faced by them due to their poverty.. These activities are planned to be achieved through a community driven approach where community institutions are to be the cornerstone of these intervention. In this way communities will participate in the development process as proactive agents of change, rather than passive beneficiaries of the livelihood program.
Transfer of assets to Ultra-poor for establishing of micro enterprises Livelihood trainings (including enterprise, marketing, technical and confidence building trainings) Enhancing Employability through Skill Development Enhancing the Bargaining Power of the Poor and Strengthening Value Chains through Common Interest Groups
