The Elbit Collection - A window unto Early Israeli Painting One of the most impressive collections of Israeli Art that was assembled over the last decades is that of the High-Technology company Elbit-Digital. The Elbit collection was carefully put together from the beginning of the century by the Ex-CEO of the company Mr. Motti Zisser. Zisser, one of the prominent collectors of Israeli art, constructed an official collection that he displayed proudly in the company’s offices as a window to Israeli society, the Israeli High-technology world and local art. From a large collection containing Israeli, International and Jewish art were carefully selected to put on auction 53 Israeli paintings that represent the major artists of the time. Artists from the Erez-Israel artistic movement before the foundation of the state - Rubin, Gutman, Shemi, Paldi and Blum - and from the first decades after the creation of Israel - Janco, Simon and Bak As in similar collections whose focus is on Eretz Israel, for instance the Azrieli collection recently put on show in the TelAviv Museum, in the Elbit collection stand out the large number of landscape paintings. Amongst these are an important landscape of Tel-Aviv in Gutman’s ‘Neve Zedek’ (Lot 34), landscapes of Galilee and Zafed in Rubin “Spring landscape” (lot 39) and Levanon “Galilee landscape” (lot 47) and a rare selection of landscapes of Jerusalem in 5 paintings depicted by Ludwig Blum. The most important of these are “The Interior of the Misgav-Ladah Synagogue” from 1944, showing the synagogue before the fall of the Old city in the war of Independence and an early painting from 1931 showing the ‘Alley near Damascus Gate” (Lots 40,42) In the Elbit collections we find a particularly good representation of the different aspects of Israeli life at its beginnings - life in the newly built cities but also the recreational pastime in - Gutman’s “Figures in a Carriage in Jaffa” or “Women with Jugs” by Moshe Castel; life in the Kibbutz in “In the Kibbutz” from 1947 by Yochanan Simon (lot 56) or the religious life in the early ‘Yeshuv” in “Haari Synagogue” by Shemi or in a rare watercolor by Rubin “Ezrat Nashim” (lots 52, 37). Stand out in the collection a small number of paintings dealing with social and ethical questions that troubled the Yeshuv. The main painting in this group is “Live barrier” by Marcel Janco from 1951 (lot no. 54), in which the artist expresses his negative opinion on the growing social and economic gap between the New Immigrants whom had just arrived and the older settlers. This historical painting has been at the center of much research and has represented Israel in both the Venice and San Paolo Biennales. Two other paintings represent the question of holocaust remembrance. These are 2 early paintings by Yosl Bergner from the late 1940s - ‘Kaparot’ and ‘Hassidic man playing music’ (lots 60, 61) - which show two separate aspects of the live of Jewish communities in the Gola. The girl crying in the first of these paintings symbolizes the grief of the people leaving the Shtetel, while the happy Hassidim represent in contrast the happier life of the Chasidut. On auction are also a limited selection of paintings by Jewish painters from the beginning of the 20th century. Amongst these stands out a large painting of ‘Sofer Stam’ by Artur Markowicz (lot 69), ‘Rider’ by Mane Katz a subject that the artist loved very much and also paintings by Ryback and Zvi Malnovitzer. ‘Our days as a passing shadow’ - The Moshe Bar-Yoda Collection. It is rare to find in Israel today an art collection that was built through a life of dealing with personal dilemmas and social issues confronting Israeli society. It was to my great surprise that I found such a collection in a modest apartment in the center of Tel-Aviv -The Moshe Bar-Yoda collection including over 100 works that reveal to us a unique and rich personal life story. Moshe Bar-Yoda was a well known personality in the Israeli art world from the 1970s onward. A public figure - Chairman of ‘Omanut l’Aam’ and director of the Culture and Art Department of the Histadrut labor Federation , one of the first Shlichim of the Jewish Agency to Ethiopia (in 1958), the first ‘Religious parachutist’ officer, an important publicist and last but not least an educated collector. Bar-Yoda was one of the few almost extinct ‘kind’ of collectors that were in direct contact with artists of all ages and orientation. Followed them devotedly by lending a helping hand and support. A true and close relationship was formed with the artist Moshe Gershuni together they shared their common cause of Holocaust remembrance and its effect on the ‘Second generation’ of survivors. Bar-Yoda’s contacts encompassed artists from different currents: those who had passed or dealt with the Holocaust, Landscape painters as Tepler, Grosbard, Eliahu Gat and Hendler, as well as Ori Reisman and Aharon Messeg. Among the younger generation stands out amongst many- Mirit Cohen, whom Bar-Yoda was one of the first to discover her uniqueness and depth. A large selection of her works decorates his home. In the collection intertwine fascinating works, as the ‘Tablecloth’ gender work by the Sarah Conforti (lot no. 150), that like ‘Tablecloth maps’ of the Holy-Land from the Middle-Ages, delineate a possible root to understand the collectors inner workings. This unique work, like many others in the collection are proof of the many faceted character of Bar-Yoda and to his openness to new ideas as well as to his Jewish roots. Bar-Yoda was a religious man. In his house stood a Holy-Arch from Slovakia (his parental and his native country) with an ornate Torah-coat. In an antique cupboard he carefully collected with great affection Jewish religious ceremonial objects, one object after another: a collection of ‘Torah fingers’ (Ezbaot torah), Spice towers, Etrog boxes, Chanukah Menorahs and Shofarot. The collection was inspired and influenced by his uncle Moshe-Arieh (Foldi) Bar-Yoda, a great collector who introduced him to the art of collecting as a child. Bar-Yoda’s wide-ranging interests manifested itself in the wide spectrum of his public activity. He spent much of his time and efforts to promote exhibitions and intellectual seminars where important figures of the time participated such as Yeshayahu Leibowitz, the Domenican Intellectual Marcel Dubois and Yirmiyahu Yovel. Throughout the years he organized and chaired concerts and performances for the Israel Festival amongst other major Israeli institutions, as well as in Germany and Italy in which integrated Eastern and Western cultural influences, new and old. He also catalogued and preserved Ethiopian Liturgical music over a lengthy period of time. An interesting aspect of the Bar-Yoda collection is his dealing with personal and public issue of: The ‘Hester Panim’ of God during the Holocaust (in Moshe Gershunis paintings), physical death (Gideon Gechtman. Work no. 152), and the role of art as a dominant cultural force in Israeli society. In the many roles he had he continually promoted the work of older and younger artists (Messeg, Tepler, Robert Baser and Menachem Lamberger amongst others). Some of us still recall the excellent Art Calendars he produced in the Histadrut, a major force at the time, which gave us a glimpse to an unknown world and served to promote many artists. As a collector, like in his other great ‘love’- contemporary classical music (Adams, Philip Glass and John Cage), Bar-Yoda found himself at ease in the borderline between the figurative and the abstract. In Moshe Gershuni he found the artistic and symbolical depth needed for him between the Holocaust and Israel. The eight rare paintings on sale exemplify this. While in the works of the younger generation he found the much needed vitality so typical of him and Israeli society- the native artists (as he referred to them)- Cohen Gan, Kupermintz, Gabi Kleismer and David Reeb. In front of us is a rich and diversified collection that tells us a part of the complex character and personality of Moshe BarYoda Z.L., and at the same time a facet of Israeli society and art between 1970 and 2000. Oren Migdal - Curator.
I keep him in my mind always Whoever heard Moshe Bar-Yuda interpreting Moshe Gershuni’s works of art which hung on the East Wall of his home – actually, not metaphorically – enjoyed a compelling experience, both intellectually and emotionally. Bar-Yuda could explain every line, detail and letter so that the painting expanded and transformed, bringing to light its depth, beauty and contents, both covert and overt. The hypnotic work “I keep the Lord in my mind always”, for example, was a gift from Gershuni to his friend Bar-Yuda after telling him about a Torah scroll his mother, Blumah Kastner-Kronnenberg, had donated to her local synagogue and which later miraculously came to his possession. Gershuni offered to paint a Shiviti plaque for Bar-Yuda, as is customary in synagogues. Bar-Yuda was thrilled, of course, but it took months for the painting to be finished. And no wonder: Gershuni poured into the famous verse his questions, his doubts, his profound connection with his people and his defiance against the heavens. In the end, the painting was not hung just above the small beautiful Holy Ark that contained the scroll, but a little further, to separate the Holy Scriptures from the shocking, searing, questions that have no answer. But not only Gershuni and not only the Eastern Wall – the whole of Moshe Bar-Yuda's home and being were infused with the spirit of Art. He lived and breathed art, especially Israeli art which expressed the existential issues that accompanied him throughout his life. Moshe was a multi-faceted man, a thinker and a doubter, who followed the commandments and questioned them, a lover of beauty and aware of its transience. He was truly man of culture, open to different artistic styles and to different answers for questions that occupied his mind constantly, until his very last moments. I was privileged to be at his side for eighteen years, to learn from him and to love him.
Judit Rotem, his wife.

CONDITIONS OF SALE The auction will be conducted by the auctioneer's representatives of Matsart Auctioneers & Appraisers (Matsart). Unless otherwise specified, Matsart is acting as an agent on behalf of the seller. The contract for the sale of the property is between the seller and the buyer. The auctioneer has sole discretion and authority at any time to determine the winner in the auction or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale or to re-offer and resell any lot, all according to his sole judgment, including yet not limited to prior to the auction, during the auction, and following the auction. Purchasing an item is legitimate only when the auctioneer lowers his hammer and announces a card number of a participant in the room or a bidder in writing or a bidder by phone or by internet. Notwithstanding the above, it is the auctioneer’s sole judgment to reopen a lot and/or cancel a sale. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid. The prices quoted in the catalogue are estimate prices of the lots. These prices are estimates, normally different from the minimum prices. A sale will be only at the minimum price or above, all according to the auctioneer’s discretion. If, in the auctioneer’s opinion, any opening bid is below the reserve of the lot, he may withdraw the lot from the sale. Following an opening bid, the auctioneer may reject further bids if, in his opinion the advance is not sufficient. All lots are sold "as is". Neither Matsart nor the seller makes any express or implied warranty of any kind with respect to the description, attribution, literature, former owners, period, provenance, condition and/or frame concerning the lots offered in the auction. No statement in the catalogue or in the sale or the invoice or the bill of sale given to purchasers shall be deemed such a warranty. All bidders are responsible to examine the work and its condition and its authenticity prior to bidding. It is important and recommended to examine all items before bidding. The details of this exhibition are published in the catalogue. Condition reports and catalog entries are to be used as guidance only by the buyers. Prior to bidding, bidders should personally inspect the lots. Following the auction, if the bidder has questions regarding authenticity and wishes to show the work to a recognized expert (acceptable to Matsart), the item must be paid for in full and the buyer must arrange (at his expense) to show the work to the expert and receive a response within 30 days following date of sale. Prior arrangements must be made with Matsart to allow that payment be withheld from the seller. Should the expert declare that the painting is not authentic, Matsart will refund money paid for lot (less expenses) under the condition that confirmation of lack of authenticity is received within 30 days of sale. To remove all doubt, following 30 days, Matsart will have no responsibility. All potential bidders must register prior to bidding by completing all necessary registration forms and provide proper identification. Matsart reserves the right to request bank and/or other financial references. Upon registration, potential bidders will receive a paddle number, which serves as identification in the event that the participant is the successful high bidder of any lot in the sale. The purchaser, whether present in the auction room at the time of sale or bidding by writing or by phone, whether for himself or for any third party, will be irrevocably committed to pay for the article and to accept it. The auctioneer and/or Matsart may take any measures necessary for realizing the commitment, i. e. to force the winner to pay expenses, bank interest and/or inflation index appropriation, to sue compensations, to withhold the articles that the buyer purchased or left in company's hold, to deduct the debt from any sum of money that Matsart owes the winner. Matsart accepts absentee bids with no additional fee. Attached herewith a form enabling buyers unable to be present at the time of auction to make their bids. By this form potential buyers authorize Matsart representatives to represent them during the auction in the interest of purchasing and/or to contact them by telephone to allow to bid during the auction by telephone. This service is given at no additional fee, beyond the buyer’s premium as stated below. A bid cannot be revoked in any form and is an obligation for purchasing. We will take all reasonable measures to process the bid, yet take no liability in the event that for any reason a bid was not processed. Bids can be delivered via fax: +972-3-6038306 or by email: bids@matsart. net. Auctions are conducted in U. S. dollars. Payment is to be made in US$. However, payment can be accepted in Euros or in N. I. S., according to the high rate of exchange published by Bank Leumi Le'israel on the day of the sale, or the day of the payment, the higher of the two. In many instances, works may not be present in the saleroom at time of sale and may be digitally exhibited. Discrepencies may occur. Matsart accepts no liability for such errors. Unless otherwise indicated, all lots are offered subject to a reserve price. This reserve will not exceed the low estimate. The reserve price is the minimum price for which the item will sell and is confidential. The auctioneer may open bidding on any lot by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may further bid on behalf of the seller, up to the amount of the reserve by placing successive or consecutive bids for a lot, or by placing bids in response to other bidders. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the buyer (as above), from among the bidders present in the auction room at the time of sale or the bidders in writing or by phone. The bidders in writing or by phone authorize Matsart representatives to represent them and to bid on their behalf at the time of auction in the interest of purchasing. All lots must be paid for and collected not later than 3 business days following the auction. Special expenses including yet not limited to, forwarding and the forwarding insurance, special packaging, messengers etc., will be borne by the buyer. It is the responsibility of the high bidder to insure the purchase within three days after sale. Should the high bidder wish, he may inform Matsart to insure the work on his behalf and at his expense. Payment for the article, plus a buyer’s premium of 15% plus all local taxes where applicable, will be paid in full immediately and not later than three days from the date of sale. From the seller we deduct seller's commission plus local taxes on commission where applicable. Payment will be accepted only in these manors: Checks drawn on US or Israeli banks, money transfers, Credit cards: Visa, American Express and Mastercard (with an addition of 3.5% on total payment via credit card). All bank fees in regards to transfers, both those of the buyer and those of Matsart, are the responsibility and at the expense of the buyer. The buyer is responsible for all local taxes where applicable including, yet not limited to VAT, sales tax, customs duties and VAT on imports, etc. New York sales tax will be charged for all items picked up and/or delivered in New York. For items shipped out of state, or imported to the USA from other locations, Matsart may be exempt from charging sales tax on hammer price. For items to be picked up and/or delivered in Israel, local VAT laws apply. For items to be picked up and/or delivered in Europe, local VAT laws apply. For more information, please contact bid department. All expenses caused by storing the article in the company after final date for collecting the article will be charged to buyer's accounts. We recommend to our customers to make sure, in advance, the availability of place in the auction. Seats will be reserved until 15 minutes before the sale. Unsold lots will be returned to their owner. Sale of a lot by Matsart after the auction is legitimate and will be guided by the same conditions as those that apply to items sold at auction. Items may be displayed in one of three locations.
