M OSHE CASTEL was born in 1909 in Jerusalem to a Sephardic family originating in Castille. At the age of 13 he entered the Bezalel School of Art, which he finished in 1925 at the age of 16. Feeling that he was not accomplished enough and following the current steps of other Israeli artists, he moved to Paris in 1927. There he studied in the Academie Julien and assiduously frequented the Louvre Museum, studying the technique of the Great Masters of the past- Titian, Delacroix and Courbet. Few pictures have remained from his first years in Paris. Most of them were lost when the artist’s pictures were taken from his atelier while he was on a trip to Israel in 1933 with the first exhibition of Ecole de Paris paintings. The few that remained were sold at a small London exhibition financed by his brother Joseph in 1928. We have before us the rare occasion of seeing in auction three of the works left in France which were recently found. The two smaller works on auction dating from the late 1920's are childhood recollections from Castel’s early life in his Sephardic family in Jerusalem. The portrait of a woman, possibly Castel’s aunt from his mother’s side, is the more mature of the two paintings. Shown in a typical Sephardic red head-wear and a green blouse held by a pin, the artist depicts a lively young woman. The head-wear, which indicates that before us is a married woman, and the hands joined before the sitter are symbols of humility. But it is the underlying message of his love for Israel and his longing for his family that strike a sympasizing chord with us. The slightly smaller portrait of a young child is freer in expression. It portrays a smiling child with a Turkish tarbush. The long payot and the cut hair show that the child is probably the right age to go to study the Bible at the Cheder but his captivating languid large brown eyes still echo of childish pranks. Painted shortly after subtracting himself from the rigid Bezalel School Academism and becoming an independent artist, these two earlier works show a freshness and naiveté typical of Israeli art of the 1920's. These are in line with works of artists such as Tziona Tagger, Pichas Litvinovsky and Israel Paldi. The third work on auction is a beautiful landscape of Safed. The painting which should be dated to 1932, due to the fact that it shows the results of Castel’s trip to Italy in that year, is a masterly painting by the artist. Here we see the artist at full bloom absorbing both the lesson of the Italian primitives in the oblong figures and the fresh orange-red color as well of the art of the French artist Maurice Utrillo. Castel takes from the latter the street setting where couples walk together talking or interact, but the overall flavor is definitely oriental. A woman with a basket on her head coming back from the market meets a Yemenite man with baggy Turkish trousers. The figures are set before low rusticated Arab walls behind which we can explore small gardens and even an orchard at a distance. But it is the contrast between the strong Israeli light caressing the white washed houses and the texture of the rough-looking walls of the buildings that gives us the true atmosphere of Safed in summer. Oriental figures, blooming gardens and orchards and old Medieval houses all blend together in what the researcher Gidon Ofrat called a Persian tapestry of light and color. Oren Migdal

The auction will be conducted by the auctioneer's representatives of Matsart Auctioneers & Appraisers (Matsart). Unless otherwise specified, Matsart is acting as an agent on behalf of the seller. The contract for the sale of the property is between the seller and the buyer. The auctioneer has sole discretion and authority at any time to determine the winner in the auction or to withdraw any lot or lots from the sale or to re-offer and resell any lot, all according to his sole judgment, including yet not limited to prior to the auction, during the auction, and following the auction. Purchasing an item is legitimate only when the auctioneer lowers his hammer and announces a card number of a participant in the room or a bidder in writing or a bidder by phone or by internet. Notwithstanding the above, it is the auctioneer’s sole judgment to reopen a lot and/or cancel a sale. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid. The prices quoted in the catalogue are estimate prices of the lots. These prices are estimates, normally different from the minimum prices. Should the expert declare that the painting is not authentic, Matsart will refund money paid for lot (less expenses) under the condition that confirmation of lack of authenticity is received within 30 days of sale. To remove all doubt, following 30 days, Matsart will have no responsibility. All potential bidders must register prior to bidding by completing all necessary registration forms and provide proper identification. Matsart reserves the right to request bank and/or other financial references. Upon registration, potential bidders will receive a paddle number, which serves as identification in the event that the participant is the successful high bidder of any lot in the sale. The purchaser, whether present in the auction room at the time of sale or bidding by writing or by phone, whether for himself or for any third party, will be irrevocably committed to pay for the article and to accept it. Jurisdiction – if Matsart decides to file a lawauit against a seller or a buyer Matsart can choose the venue either in New York or in Paris or in Israel and the reigning law will be according to the venue chosen by Matsart. However, without derogating from this, any lawsuit against Matsart can ONLY be filed in Israel, according to Israeli law, and the SOLE jurisdiction for any legal action of any kind against Matsart is ONLY in Israel and ONLY according to Israeli law.
