NEWS UPDATE Second edition of Seed meets Technology a resounding success The second edition of Seed meets Technology was a success, with even more visitors attending than last year. With an increased focus on seeds, varieties, cultivation methods and crop protection the fair has been an excellent addition to the Dutch trade fair landscape and the open days of the seed breeding companies in Dutch Seed Valley region. Approximately thirty companies from the Dutch seed sector made presentations last week during Seed meets Technology, a trade fair with a very specific target audience. As a result of this focus, the quality of visitors was also very high. The setup with demonstrations, trial fields and symposia on green chemistry for seeds, hydroponics and phenotyping in the future provided ample opportunity for interaction with visitors. The organisation, which consists of Proeftuin Zwaagdijk (Agricultural Research Centre), Seed Processing Holland, Leba Metaalbewerking (metal works) and Incotec (Seed enhancement), maintains a strict concept. Participants are asked to demonstrate new products or services which really have something to show. Coinciding with the fair, the gates to various variety trials were opened to visitors, including Takii, ABZ Seeds, Bakker Brothers, Seminis and Sakata. Proeftuin Zwaagdijk welcomed visitors to their greenhouse and open field tests while Incotec Enkhuizen organised guided tours. Inside the trade hall, ABZ Seeds provided a presentation on the Delizz brand, which is a 4

A finger on the pulse of the industry: FRUIT LOGISTICA 2016 Retail is in a constant state of flux - especially in the fresh produce trade. But how is this industry changing? To find out, the German fruit trade association (DFHV) commissioned a study at the University of Gรถttingen. Under the direction of Professor Ludwig Theuvsen at the Department of Agricultural Economics, the study investigated whether and how global fresh produce flows are changing. The results of the study indicated that Europe remains a key export market, but is becoming less important. The Asian market, on the other hand, is gaining importance. For some products, particularly in the premium segment, this could even result in long-term supply shortages in Europe. What conclusions can and should the international fresh produce sector draw from this study? How does it need to adapt? These and many other questions will be answered in Berlin at FRUIT LOGISTICA, the world's leading trade fair for the fresh produce business. FRUIT LOGISTICA Global Brand Manager Wilfried Wollbold stresses the trade fair's importance. "Today more than ever it is important to not only monitor this process of change, but also to play an active role in shaping it. As the hub of the global fresh produce industry, FRUIT LOGISTICA offers an ideal platform." FRUIT LOGISTICA 2016 from 3-5 February is where some 65,000 trade visitors from 135 countries will meet to make contact with potential and existing business partners, negotiate deals, and learn about the latest developments and innovations in the fresh produce business. Trade visitors can register online, purchase tickets in advance and print them out. This enables them to get started at the trade fair without delay. Online registration also offers the advantage of reduced ticket prices.

Developments in sustainable treatment of seeds were demonstrated by Incotec and Syngenta Seedcare. A good example of the technology on display was the demonstration of a brand new seed air separator from Seed Processing Holland plus the HSS800 pelleting and

encrustation machine (rotary coater) by Leba. Hoopman Equipment, Agratechniek and Data Technologies also showcased new seed processing technology. Fytagoras, Iribov and Anadis showed methods used for seed analysis to determine, among other things, seed maturity. Botman Hydroponics and Rolan Robotics demonstrated a robotised cultivation concept for hydroponics. Seed Tuning, Gitzels NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

Breeding Services, Proeftuin Zwaagdijk, Aris and Flier Systems revealed new methods for automatic phenotyping of seedlings and disease screening. 30MHz, Seed Conditioning Enkhuizen, Green Simplicity, Certhon and Polytechnic participated with greenhouse and conditioning technology and ABS software provided breeders with information on easy processing of assessments. Fond® provided an explanation on how organisations can adapt to the dynamic seeds sector. A quarter of the visitors were from abroad. Various open days in the Seed Valley region at seed breeding companies ensured that an extensive programme was available for international resellers, major

breeders and professionals in the seed sector. Seed meets Technology is a good technological addition and a platform for seed companies that work with other companies to reach customers. Make sure to mark week 39, the last week of September 2016, in your calendar for the next edition of Seed meets Technology.

Ministry of Environment and Water utilizes drone technology to help eradicate red palm weevil scourge The Ministry of Environment and Water has revealed that it is using drone technology to help combat the red palm weevils in line with its strategic goal of developing and implementing a key plan to fight and eradicate agricultural pests. Eng. Mohamed Mousa Eng. Mohamed Mousa Abdullah, Director of Abdullah, Director of Agriculture Research Agriculture Research Department, MoEW Department, Ministry of Environment and Water, said, “The adoption of drone technology forms part of the Ministry's efforts to implement the best environmental and agricultural practices to achieve sustainable development and reinforce the UAE's leadership in the world of innovation. This is in line with the initiative launched by H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, declaring 2015 as the year of innovation.” He added that the drone's remote sensors will find the reason behind the spreading of red palm weevils-collating all necessary data. Additionally, the locations of the infected areas of the red palm weevils and severity of infections they cause can be determined using the technology's aerial photography capability and other sensors. The drone's accurate sensors conduct technical comprehensive survey of palm farms by measuring the electromagnetic radiation energy being released by infected trees. The data is then collected to map and measure its spectral signature, which identifies the types, locations and degrees of injuries.

agricultural sector. To support the process, FAO published a set of updated guidelines to assist governments in carrying out their national-level agricultural censuses, tailored to various different country needs and capacities. This is the latest edition of guidelines which FAO provides every 10 years. These censuses are crucial for governments to implement evidence-based policies to foster agricultural and rural development, ensure access to land, improve food security and reduce the adverse environmental impacts of agricultural activities. Census data are also essential for the private sector to make informed decisions that guide

their investments in agri-business activities. The information collected provides an accurate picture of the agricultural sector and a reliable sampling frame for current agricultural surveys. In particular, the censuses entail a complete account of the structure of the agricultural sector, including the number and size of holdings, land use, crop area, crop intensity, irrigation facilities, agricultural input use, livestock numbers, as well as farmer demographics and employment. Based on countries' experiences and lessons learnt over previous decades, the new guidelines form part of the FAO coordinated World Programme

for the Census of Agriculture, which covers the period 20162025. For the first time, the new census programme provides guidance on how to obtain and integrate data on fisheries (capture fisheries activities as aquaculture was already included) and on greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions from agricultural activities. "The use of these guidelines by FAO member countries ensures that census results are harmonized and internationally comparable, and allows countries to benchmark their performance against others," said Pietro Gennari, FAO Chief Statistician. "They address the

requirements of both developed and developing countries, and provide the foundation for the development of an integrated census and survey programme, for using innovative methods and tools for data collection, and ultimately, for making better informed strategic decisions," he added. Delegates from the136 member nations of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) have given their approval to set up an international information gateway for the genetic data of food crop seeds. The agreement to proceed with the proposal for a Global Information System (GLIS) from the FAO-based seed treaty came during a week-long meeting of the 6th biennial Governing Body that ended in Rome on October 9. As climate change accelerates, it is vital for farmers, scientists, plant breeders, private sector companies to be able to develop new plant varieties resistant to pests, floods and drought, in order to maintain sufficient agricultural production levels. To do this they need to know what is where, and how to get it, currently no easy task in the myriad number of actors that hold that information. Information is not just with seed banks and research centres but also in the plants growing in farmers' fields, and uncultivated land, the so-called crop wild relatives. The system has to be global because no country is selfsufficient in crop germplasm that has been travelling across borders for centuries.

Net Irrigate introduces new suite of wirerat® pivot monitoring solutions Net Irrigate, an Internet of Things (IoT) ag tech manufacturer, recently announced its new product suite of WireRat® Pivot Monitoring Solutions. Absorbing the PivotProxy® brand, the expansive suite of products offers farmers and producers additional tailored pivot monitoring and control solutions using WireRat technology - the agriculture industry's one and only patented copper theft detection solution. Catering to th “no-frills” segment, WireRat Pivot Monitoring Solutions' modularized parts will give growers more options at lower price points. Although core product characteristics - such as no external power requirement, no monthly subscription fees, simple installation, ease of use and interoperability among all major pivot brands remain the same, the new product suite allows costconscious producers to select and purchase the WireRat solution that best fits their needs. “Net Irrigate's user-friendly Pivot Monitoring Solutions have proven to be more affordable and reliable solutions compared to other products on the market,” said Rob Mercer, owner of Coney Irrigation. “My customers appreciate not having an ongoing subscription fee and like that they only pay for the features that they actually utilize.” The new WireRat Pivot Monitoring Solution suite includes products ranging from a simple, standalone span cable theft detection device to a comprehensive pivot monitoring system, providing status updates, GPS and remote shutdown capabilities. To meet the specific needs of the individual irrigator, list prices range from $549 to $1,299. “We're aware that the market is down, and there is a large gap in this underserved segment of agriculture,” said Edward DeSalle, CEO of Net Irrigate. “Most pivot monitoring solutions cater to the up-market by encompassing a wide range of features that customers pay for but never use, and this new suite of WireRat Pivot Monitoring Solutions closes the gap by offering more direct, need-based solutions at a cost effective price.” In addition, Net Irrigate has added dual batteries to both the WireRat MX and MXL (equivalent to the PivotProxy®/ PivotProxy®TL), to extend the life of the product and utilize various power sources for theft detection and safety stop alerts.

Seed potato exports are booming with big strides being made to open even more new markets In 2014-2015 seed exports beyond the EU were up 15.5% on the previous year, to a highest-ever total of 90,000t. In Scotland, which accounts for around 80% of UK seed potato exports, the sector is estimated to be worth £80-100 million, and growing. “There is a distinct buzz in the seed export market, which is doing really well, trading on our positive position on plant health, with freedom from Dickeya, brown rot and ring rot,” says Robert Burns, Head of Seed & Export at AHDB Potatoes' Edinburgh

office. “So it is really all about staying on top of that, through diligence and attention to detail.” Most of the growth came from a market share jump in Egypt, which now accounts for 58% of all GB seed exports. “We spend a lot of time there talking to plant health officials about the quality, vigour and very positive plant health status of our seed,” he says. Indeed, GB seed's freedom from bacterial diseases Dickeya, brown rot and ring rot has now pushed Dutch seed off the top spot. “It is something our EU competitors can't claim, but we can, thanks to our island status, cooler climate and continuing efforts to

remain disease free. Our flushthrough system, with a maximum of seven generations of seed multiplication, the Safe Haven certification scheme, no seed imported into Scotland, and no stock taken from the bottom of the process to the top through clonal selection, all contribute to this.” But the sales surge in Egypt is a two-edged sword. “It's a lot of eggs in one basket, and one variety, Hermes,” says Mr Burns. “It is a huge risk if there was ever a problem.” So, efforts are being made to develop new markets, to spread risk and make the most of new varietal requirements and differences in climates/seasons.

Destination countries often have much stricter seed import standards than the EU, so AHDB Potatoes is working with Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture to: build relationships and understanding with foreign officials and seed buyers; promote the quality benefits of the rigorous classification, testing, handling and inspection of GB seed potatoes; forge partnerships, often through bilateral agreements, to meet the needs of all involved. There is usually good scope for finding a way forward, says Dr Triona Davey, acting head of SASA's potato branch. “It can take time, but the unique selling point of GB seed is that it is free of diseases that can pose a real risk in warmer climates.”

Valoya drives Queen Mary University's research with Microsoft Valoya (Helsinki, Finland), a leading provider of advanced plant lighting systems, worked with Microsoft Corp. to create next generation of state of the art lighting system, using Valoya's advanced LED lights, Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Azure Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology. The solution Valoya created, helped by the collaboration with Microsoft, is a novel solution for simulation of natural outdoor light. The system, called Valoya Light DNA Dynamic Light, enables accurate replication of outdoor light conditions over time, while matching the spectrum and intensity of constantly changing natural light.

Research in this field is of outmost importance, as it will contribute to feeding the growing population of our planet, through accelerating the selection and breeding of new, more productive and light stress resistant plant varieties. Professor Alexander Ruban of Queen Mary University of London's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences explains, “The system by Valoya now enables us to do testing on plants and algae, which has been impossible before. Not only will we reach very high light intensities, but we can also match the spectral conditions of different locations in the world. The flexibility of the system also allows us to do simulations on sunflecks in shade situations, all downstairs in our lab and anytime of the year.

ore exhibitors, more exhibition space and more visitors - IPM DUBAI and WOP DUBAI were on top form in 2015. In October, more than 300 exhibitors came into contact with top-class customers from the Middle East and Asia at the two most important B2B trade fairs for horticulture and fresh produce in the Gulf region. The unanimous conclusion was that it provided "an excellent opportunity to come together and do business." 2015 also saw both B2B trade fairs continuing their growth trajectory - a great success, marking the ten year anniversary of IPM DUBAI. "The ever-increasing levels of interest show how attractive the location of Dubai is to the horticultural industry",

summarised Oliver P. Kuhrt, Managing Director of Messe Essen, the event organiser. “For us, it confirms the effectiveness of our strategy, which is to establish IPM ESSEN as a world-leading trade fair through affiliated events in important growth markets; thereby opening up new sales opportunities for our exhibitors." With 102 exhibitors, IPM DUBAI achieved a growth of 28 per cent and was even able to increase the exhibition area by 50 per cent. Once again, world-leading trade fair IPM ESSEN's overseas affiliated event managed to increase its allure to buyers too: 3,505 trade visitors travelled in from 47 countries - six per cent more than last year. The exhibitors praised the excellent quality of the

visitors and their willingness to invest. This was also clear from the increase in internationality. For example, a larger number of Eastern European companies and cut flower producers from Africa and South America came to IPM DUBAI. China, Mauritius and Sri Lanka were represented in the international pavilions for the first time, alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, Germany, Kenya and the USA. German companies were also represented under the banner "Made in Germany" at a pavilion organised by the trade association INDEGA (Representation of Interests of German Products for Horticulture). umintech is one of the worldwide largest organic fertilizer and humic substance producers, based in Grevenbroich, Germany. Humintech GmbH is expanding its production capacity and therefore moved in 2014 to a new production plant (30,000 m2) in Grevenbroich, Germany (directly closed to the lignite open cast mining Garzweiler II). Humintech used to produce its humic acids based products in three different areas and now it joined them in one area in Grevenbroich. In this way, Humintech has the possibility to optimize its logistics and supply its products faster to the customers worldwide. The new high technology production line enables Humintech to increase the production capacity to about 50,000 t/year humic acids based products in granular form (Perlhumus速), 10,000 t/year

organic fertilizers and biostimulants. Beside the current product line the company will update its new product range to more than 50 different humic acids and organic matter based products within the next two years, which will contribute to increase the quantity and quality of plant production. Humintech takes the best German oxidized Lignite resources' (Leonardite) with high humic /fulvic acids quantity and uses the high technical production methods to get the high humic acid quality. Furthermore Humintech is active in research, development and industrial production of humic matter and humic acids for agriculture, animal feed, pharmaceutical and construction industries, veterinary medicine and environmental applications such as water purification and soil remediations. Humintech produces a large quantity of granulate humic acid as Perlhumus, water soluble humic acid as Powhumus and liquid humic acid as Liqhumus and 6% Fehumate as Humiron. Humitech started the production of humic acid with various microorganisms as antagonist

of several soils born disease. BioHealth is one successful antagonist to soil born fungi. BioHealth® TH/BS WSG DESCRIPTION BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is a blend of selected Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis strains, humic acids and seaweed extract. Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis are antagonist to soil borne pathogens like e.g. Phythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia or Fusarium, whose hyphens and organs can be disposed by Trichoderma's comprehensive enzyme tools. Thus Trichoderma suppresses the spreading of these pathogens. Bacillus subtilis have evolved numerous mechanisms for both attack of other fungi or bacteria and for enhancing plant and root growth. During a culture Bacillus subtilis nourishes on the root exudates in the rhizosphere and thus builds a biological protective barrier against soil borne pathogens. In latent affected plant material BioHealth® TH/BS WSG remains ineffective, due to the reason that the antagonist cannot follow the parasite into the inside of the plant. Therefore BioHealth® TH/BS WSG has to be regarded as a

soil conditioner or rather a plant intensifier and under no circumstances as a fungicide against soil pathological fungi. ORIGIN BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is obtained through alkaline extraction from German Leonardite (highly oxidized lignite), high quality isolated and selected Trichoderma harzanium fungus, high quality isolated and selected Bacillus subtilis strains and extracted from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed. BENEFITS J Destroys the hyphens of most soil born pathogens like e.g. Pythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia or Fusarium J Increases the resistance of plant roots against water, disease, temperature and salt stress J Promotes the growth of root and regenerates the damaged root J Stimulates the growth of useful microorganisms in the root area J Enhances the germination and increases their growth J Aerates compact soils and binds loose sandy soils J Increases the water holding capacity of the soil. Improves the soil aeration and the gas exchange of the soil J Increases the soil buffering capacity and neutralizes the pH-value in the soil and thus enhances the uptake of fertilizers J Binds salt in the soil and thus decreases salinization J Enhances the soil quality and increases the soil aeration in compact soils and compacts light sandy soils J Resource for natural vitamins and growth hormones like cytokinine, which promotes the root growth.

ord na Móna has a peat resource of 80,000ha of peatlands and has been harvesting peat for over 75 years. With a vast selection of peat bogs and peats to choose from Bord na Móna has been innovating to produce products to help growers satisfy the demanding specifications and yield expectations of their customers. This becomes increasingly important as growers get larger and systems of production get more sophisticated with increases in technology and automation. Our focus: L Improved harvesting techniques - In 2015 Bord na Móna's Engineering Team have used different techniques in harvesting to maximise the fraction output for our customers. A higher percentage of Fraction 2 (6-12 mm) and Fraction 3

GULF AGRICULTURE

(10-25mm) helps customers in providing stability of growing media for long term pot plants and nursery stock. L Reducing limitations of water quality - Declining water quality is a global issue of concern as populations grow and industrial and agricultural activities expands. For horticulture high salinity and hard water particularly in areas of high temperature can cause problems in growing plants. The high buffering capacity of Bord na Móna peats are showing themselves to be an essential constituent in the growing media mix in buffering against high salinity and high alkalinity. L Developing Irish black peats The key objective here is the characterisation of Irish black peats. These peats have good adhesive properties. They also have a high buffer water

holding capacity. Following this advancement in characterisation these peats can be mixed with other peats to provide growing media with differing physical properties for propagation and growing high quality plants. L Optimising Aeration Speciality premium products Sod Moss and Bin Sod have always been at the forefront of Bord na Móna's sales strategy. The fractions from both Sod Moss and Bin Sod offer growing media manufacturers and growers a material with known Air Capacity that can be readily added to growing media to adjust the Air Capacity for long term plants. MEASURING EQUIPMENT

GERMAN MEASURING TECHNOLOGY FOR HORTI-AND AGRICULTURE WORLDWIDE

TEP Systems develops and distributes worldwide mobile and stationary analytical systems and tools, particularly designed for testing and monitoring of soil, water and air. The company has been specializing particularly in the scope of horticulture, agriculture, associated research and experimentation. STEP Systems was established in Nuremberg, Bavaria, in 2004. The portfolio ranges from simple thermometers to complete laboratory systems. The company is an innovative supplier of advanced measurement technology: it develops, manufactures and distributes portable pH-, EC- and activitymeasuring devices with special sensors that can measure various parameters such as salinity, conductivity and pH in seconds directly in the soil, providing quick and precise information about the current nutrient status of a plant.

Due to STEP Systems' many years of experience in the field of plant nutrition, the company can offer its customers more than only advanced measuring technology, as measurement results provide the basis for an individual interpretation, i.e. the correct evaluation. The conclusions and required plant cultivation measures are explained to the user. Moreover, especially for the complete analysis system LASA AGRO 3900 the company developed a software for fertilizing recommendation. For a future-oriented company like STEP systems the cooperation with teaching and research institutes of the green sector is self-evident. "Our top priority is always to develop an applicable technique of the latest scientific findings in order to make it usable for the practice," points out the Managing Director, Harald Braungardt. Thus, STEP Systems has recently NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

MEASURING EQUIPMENT completed a project, in which the CO2 measurement in the soil has played an important role. Another current project supported by the Federal Ministry of Economics, deals with an automated mobile soil moisture measuring system. This system measures moisture in different soil layers, calculates the required irrigation volume accordingly and immediately documents the irrigation process on a web platform, visually and in tabular form. With its mobile hand-held measuring instruments STEP systems also provides continuous development. Thus, the new COMBI 5000 will be presented during the IPM show 2016 in Essen. It unites the previous individual instruments of the 3000 series for pH, EC, activity, temperature and soil moisture measurements in one device with intelligent chip technology. For Harald Braungardt this new all-in-one unit is the universal tool for every plant producer for rapid on-site inspection of all plant-relevant parameters. Braungardt cares particularly about the collaboration between academia and industry. "I think it is simply necessary to cooperate closely in order to provide new developments for the practical use," he states. Exactly this customer-oriented attitude was certainly the reason why the jury of the most important horticultural magazine “TASPO” awarded STEP Systems in 2007 as the "Best customeroriented supplier of technical equipment for the green business". Later, in 2010, the jury chose Harald Braungardt as the winner in the category "Entrepreneur of the Year” in the green business. Globally active and locally present "With our products, being dedicated to “Made in Germany” quality, we have great opportunities in export business," says Braungardt. STEP Systems operates globally and sees this strategy as the right way forward. Only this year STEP Systems has participated in 11 major international trade fairs all over the world. "So we stay in permanent contact with our partners and can ensure an individual support of a specific customer group - namely, the plant producers with all their special demands and NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

peculiarities," concludes Harald Braungardt. As a leading company on the market STEP Systems is a member of INDEGA - an association representing the interests of the German industry for horticulture. Harald Braungardt is the Managing Director and Member of Board of the INDEGA, therefore he is strongly involved in all activities of this

association of the German entrepreneurs. The 80 German member companies offer various technical products, plants and services for horticulture. In addition, they regularly exchange information and jointly develop markets and business segments. Here Braungardt is a popular contact person for all markets worldwide, as STEP systems now accounts for about 65 percent of its sales abroad.

HOW DOES NEW HOLLAND MEET THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF THE MARKETS IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH GULF AGRICULTURE MAGAZINE, FEDERICO BELLOTTO, NEW HOLLAND AGRICULTURE BUSINESS DIRECTOR FOR AFRICA AND MIDDLE EAST EXPLAINS THE RECENT TRENDS FOR THE MECHANISATION EVOLVING IN THE MEA REGION AND HOW DOES NEW HOLLAND MEET THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF THE MARKETS

W Federico Bellotto

38

hat have been the main trends in agriculture in the Africa & Middle East region in 2014-15? How is the trend for mechanisation evolving in the region and how do you see it evolving as we go forward? The downtrend of oil and commodities prices has affected the industry in 2014. As the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2015-2024 report points out, prices for all agricultural products are expected to decrease over the next ten years. Although further investments could raise yields and production significantly in Africa, modest production growth is expected. Industry volumes have increased in 2015 for tractors,

GULF AGRICULTURE

especially in the medium range segment, and also for combine harvesters. This trend is set to continue as Middle Eastern and African countries strive to develop their agriculture in order to meet the growing demand for produce. The introduction of modern farming practices and effective mechanization has the potential to dramatically raise productivity. Where agriculture in Middle Eastern and African countries has begun a shift in this direction with the support of their governments, it has also been attracting greater investment from the private sector. This process has very specific requirements, from simple, robust tractors that are easy to use and service to the

high-horsepower models bristling with productivityboosting features, as well as a wide range of baling and harvesting equipment. How does New Holland meet the diverse needs of the markets where mechanisation is most advanced and those where it is still in the early stages? New Holland Agriculture has been at the forefront of the mechanization process, gaining an outstanding leadership in these markets. In fact, approximately one out of every three tractors and sold in the Middle East and Africa in 2014 were New Holland, and for combines it was even more. New Holland Agriculture is

ideally placed to meet the growing demand and specific requirements of the Middle Eastern and African markets, with its wide product offering that ranges from entry-level, simple-to-use and maintain equipment for the small farmer to the latest technologies and high-productivity machines for the big farming businesses. Most importantly, we are present in 41 countries on the continent, covering 97% of the agricultural areas with strong, highly professional distributors and their networks that count more than 250 dealerships. This means that we are able to provide qualified sales advice as well as effective and fast parts and technical support. Can you tell us about the agricultural equipment market in Iraq? What are the main issues facing this market and how is New Holland addressing them? Can you give an example of a successful resolution? Iraq is centred on Lower

Mesopotamia and it is an agricultural country with unique environmental and social features. The country is facing challenges in all sectors of the economy due to the political instability. Government subsidies drive the market in Iraq, and the incentives have been reduced as a result of the oil price decline, years of war and social unrest in the region. In spite of these conditions in the market, New Holland maintains its position as the market leader with a suitable product and service offering through our distribution network and

governmental deals. We are present through an importer based in Baghdad that covers the majority of the country through its branches and workshops. What are the best-selling New Holland products in Iraq? In what way do they meet a local need particularly well? Do you have any new products that you think will do particularly well in this market, and why? The best-selling products in Iraq are our TD80 tractor, which is assembled by SCMI (State Company For Mechanical Industries), and the TC5040 combine harvester. We are competing in the industry with these products as they

have the power, reliability and harvesting capability to drive the market comfortably. In addition to our best-selling combine model, we have a good presence in the market with the TC4.90 and TC5.70 models, which meet the requirements of mixed and small scale arable farmers. Recently we introduced our TD5 tractor range, which has advanced features and outstanding comfort with its five star tractor evolution, in order to increase our visibility and conquer the medium horsepower segment. WE ARE PRESENT IN SAUDI ARABIA WITH 2 DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTORS AND WE COVER THE MARKET THROUGH THEIR SUB-DEALERS IN DIFFERENT TERRITORIES

I believe that in this country the combine harvesting market offers the biggest potential; the industry is growing year after year. Can you tell us about the agricultural equipment market in Saudi Arabia? What are the main issues facing this market and how is New Holland addressing them? Can you give an example of a successful resolution? The development of Saudi Arabia's agriculture over the past decade has been amazing. Saudi Arabia is widely thought of as a desert and of course, water is the key to agriculture in the country, but it has regions where climate has favoured agriculture. Although in recent years there have been some Government restrictions on water usage, with irrigation projects and large scale mechanization agriculture is developing. We work with corporate customers and small scale farmers through our distributors in order to progress in developing the industry.

We are present in Saudi Arabia with 2 different distributors and we cover the market through their subdealers in different territories. What are the best-selling New Holland products in Saudi Arabia? In what way do they meet a local need particularly well? Do you have any new products that you think will do particularly well in this market, and why? The best-selling products in Saudi Arabia are our T6000 and T7000 tractor ranges, and our hay tools like the Speedrowers. These products meet the demands of many operations and deliver industry-leading power, control, comfort and performance. We have also entered the olive harvesting business with our specialized Braud harvesters. In which segments of the Saudi market do you see the greatest potential for future growth? In Saudi Arabia, the potential is on the olive business and New Holland is ideally placed to meet this sector's needs with our Braud olive harvesters. How do you work with your importers to support New Holland customers in these markets? We provide our importers with service support and parts service. We also deliver commercial and technical training for their staff, as well as training for our customers. Another important part of our partnership are periodic joint visits to customers in order to get a good understanding of their needs and analyse the market conditions.

50-85HP MF 300 SERIES TRACTORS SET FOR INTRODUCTION IN EARLY 2016

M

assey Ferguson a worldwide brand of AGCO (NYSE:AGCO), is introducing a new range of 50hp-85hp tractors for selected African and Middle East markets. This latest move will further strengthen its product offering in the lower horsepower tractor sector in these territories and offer a broader choice to farmers looking for a rugged and reliable multi-purpose machine. In addition, to complement these new MF 300 Series tractors, a new line of Massey Fergusonbranded implements is also being unveiled for the region. “Simple, yet powerful, the MF 300 Series tractors are tried and tested, with a strong reputation for straightforward operation and robust dependability - they are ideallyequipped to meet the tough

challenges of African and Middle East agriculture,” says Thierry Lhotte, Massey Ferguson VicePresident Marketing, Europe/Africa/Middle East. “More than 1.5 million units based on this renowned design are already at work in the world.” Affordable and economical to run, these entry-level 'do anything' tractors will have strong appeal as the main power source for smallholder farmers or local community groups looking to mechanise or upgrade their agricultural operations. The models can also be a valuable addition to a machinery fleet on larger farms or estates requiring a costeffective workhorse. Initially, a choice of six

Massey Ferguson matched implements, covering cultivation, planting and transport, will be available for the MF 300 Series. These include a 1.6m-width disc harrow, 0.5m-width fixed-disc plough, 2-tine subsoiler, 2-row planter, 3-tonne trailer and transport box. Plans are in place to develop and expand the implement range according to market demand. “As true multi-taskers, the MF 300 Series are equally

MF 375 and MF 385 models are fitted with power steering. The MF 300 Series tractors boast a spacious operator's environment equipped with a spring-suspension deluxe seat. All controls are well laid out and fall neatly to hand. Depending on the model, the tractors are available in footstep or semi-platform configuration. As part of Massey Ferguson's global manufacturing strategy, the MF 300 Series are being produced in Pakistan by Millat Tractors who are a long-term partner of Massey Ferguson with 50 years' experience building MF tractors as a licensee manufacturer. Massey Ferguson engineers from the Beauvais tractor manufacturing facility in France are heavily involved in developing the MF 300 Series for the Africa and Middle East regions. In a related initiative, work has also started on the potential localisation of Massey Ferguson sub-100hp tractor assembly in Russia. “Massey Ferguson is committed to providing highquality machinery and appropriate technology to suit all types of farm operations all over the world,” adds Thierry Lhotte. “The new MF 300 Series fits perfectly with our existing product offer in Africa and Middle East markets. The range represents a key element in our 'three-segment tractor strategy' in the region to provide farmers at varying stages of development with the right choice of machines across a spectrum of power and specification requirements. The MF 300 Series will now provide an entry-level product in addition to our superb, higher specification MF 400 series and brand-new MF 4700 Global Series.” NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

JAIN IRRIGATION — THE ONLY INDIAN COMPANY IN FORTUNE'S FIRST EVER GLOBAL LIST OF 51 COMPANIES THAT ARE CHANGING THE WORLD!

ain Irrigation Systems Ltd. is the only Indian company that has made it to the list of Fortune's 51 companies that are changing the world. What's more, the company has been ranked No.7 only after Vodafone and Safaricom, Google, Toyota, Walmart, Enel Utilities and GSK. The full list includes other iconic names like Cisco, Facebook, Mastercard, Starbucks, Nike, Ford Motor, Unilever, IBM etc. The Fortune's 'Change the World' list is meant to shine a spotlight on companies that have made significant progress in addressing major social problems as a part of their core business strategy. It is based on the belief that capitalism should be not just tolerated but celebrated for its power to do good. At a time when governments are flailing, its powers are needed more than ever. The Companies chosen have a sizeable impact on the major

global social or environmental problems as part of their competitive strategy. In its evaluation, Fortune considered four criteria: the degree of business innovation involved, the measurable impact at scale on an important social challenge, the contribution of the shared-value activities to the company's profitability and competitive advantage, and the significance of the shared value effort to the overall business. In its citation, Fortune Global says “Jain has built its business by improving the livelihoods of 5 million small farmers in India. Based in the country's western Maharashtra state, Jain began selling microirrigation systems in 1986, when it recognized that the technology, commonly used in industrial agriculture, could be adapted for local growers, whose tiny landholdings were traditionally watered by rain or blunt flooding techniques. As

Jain's “More Crop Per Drop™” slogan promised, yields increased dramatically - 50% to 300%, depending on the plant as did farmers' incomes. And Jain continues to boost both in other ways as well: It has introduced more-viable crop varieties and trained farmers on more productive growing techniques, such as high-density planting for mangoes. The company also branched into solar water pumps (electricity is often scarce on the farm), financing, and food processing - for the likes of Coca-Cola and Uniliever- so that there is a ready market for these farmers' wares. The company, the world's secondlargest seller of drip-irrigation systems, now does business in 116 countries.” Bhavarlal Jain, Founder Chairman of Jain Irrigation, says “It is indeed an honour to be included in Fortune's global list of companies that are changing NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

the world. It represents decades of passion and devotion that our team has invested in working with small farmers. Whatever success we have achieved stems from our belief that only if the farmer prospers, will we prosper. He added, “The Company's mission statement is 'Leave this world better than you found it'. We are striving to achieve this, by improving the farmers' income and confidence levels on the one hand, while conserving the precious natural resources of the world on the other. Together this ensures social change and environmental protection. All our business lines are in keeping with national priorities with a global reach. It is our firm belief that with this spirit, we can envisage a phenomenal potential for growth, for millions of small farmers and for other stakeholders. It is with a great sense of fulfillment that we cherish this recognition and ranking.” The list of 51 companies was assembled from more than 200 recommendations by dozens of business and academic nonprofit experts around the world. According to Fortune, “The one thing all 'Change the World' companies have in common is that they recognize the business value in addressing societal needs. In their quest for profits, they are driving innovations that improve health outcomes, make progress on climate change, provide better access to education, and create new economic opportunities for those in poverty. They realize that business can - and must compete to 'Change the World'.” For details; fortune.com/change-the-world/ NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2015

SOSPALM, THE STRATEGY TO KEEP HEALTHY PALM TREES WITH QUALITY DATES

T

he red palm weevil and stem borer attacks on Phoenix dactylifera are causing a loss of productivity and the death of palm trees on date producing farms, and generating a great deal of economic damage, which is leading some farmers to consider a change of crop or abandoning their farms. SOSPALM is the endotherapy system that has reversed the situation, generating confidence and optimism. The SOSPALM preventive and curative protocol can cure affected palms while keeping those that are healthy free from plague and, following the recommendations, prevent harm to bees because the pollen does not have neonicotinoid residues and the dates, free from

insecticide residues, have a high commercial value. By injecting a very small dose of insecticide into the palm, a high level of efficiency is achieved and the environmental impact and cost of the insecticides used is reduced. It also facilitates the work and performance of the labour force. With just a few injections per year the palms are kept in perfect condition, ensuring high productivity. After successful implementation in the northern and southern Mediterranean area, producers of dates in Qatar, Kuwait and now UAE, already have the benefits of this system of control. VERANDA BREEDER: ROYAL CLASS BREEDER HOUSING

V

encomatic introduces its renewed group housing system for hatching egg production: the Veranda Breeder. This royal class housing system offers 5 star accommodation for broiler and layer breeders. By combining a high level of automation with the use of vertical space, the system offers the most efficient production of high quality hatching eggs. The new Veranda Breeder

52

GULF AGRICULTURE

has been designed to meet the requirements of modern breeders, and fully complies to European standards for animal welfare. Birds are housed in a healthy environment and have controlled access to a scratching area, where they are able to perform their natural dust bathing behaviour. High numbers of first class eggs is the key to success in breeder housing. Excellent egg quality is guaranteed with the integrated nest box that closes at night, which prevents contamination by the birds. Possible out-of-nest eggs roll to the nest automatically, as the slats are sloping. The manure falls onto a manure belt and is transported out of the house frequently. Ammonia and fine dust levels are extremely low, improving a healthy climate for both birds and employees. Next to

a perfect climate, the birds are housed on hygienic slats. This reduces the contact of birds with manure, thus improving bio-security, and reducing exposure to pathogens. On top of a royal class environment for the birds, the Veranda also ensures optimum working conditions and requires minimum labour. Employees are no longer working among the birds, and benefit from a highly controlled working environment. This all together makes the Veranda Breeder the most modern breeder housing system on the market. Vencomatic Group is known for its innovative and sustainable systems for the poultry industry.
