Nutrimite™: key to successful IPM in Moroccan roses The experience of Exmora, a large ornamental grower from Skhirat on the Moroccan westcoast, demonstrates that Biobest's NutrimiteTM is a game changer also under NorthAfrican growing conditions. A solid powerboost to the predatory mite A. swirskii, that's what Exmora needed to finally declare victory on whitefly and other pests. Julien Bennani, Exmora's general manager explains how Biobest helped his company achieve better and more economic pest control than frequent pesticide sprays. Exmora grows around 4 ha of ornamentals crops, mainly in greenhouses. Rose and Gerbera are the main crops and exports to Europe are important. “Whiteflies used to be a major problem” says Julien “and we sprayed a lot of pesticides, alternating various types of products. However, at the end of the growing season, we always ended up with huge whitefly populations. Due to growing pesticide resistance, the problem was getting worse year after year. We also had problems with thrips and spider mites.” Four years ago, Julien called upon Biobest to help setting up an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. Julien: “Together with Biobest's technical advisor Saida Bennaji we initiated trials on roses. We initially tried different combinations of beneficials and noticed an improvement in the early season. Towards the end of the season, however, we still ran into problems. Last year, we tested a strategy based on a new Biobest product. We applied 4

NutrimiteTM to feed the predatory mite Amblyseius swirskii and combined this further with sticky traps. The results of the trials were outstanding and today we treat all our roses this way.” Saida Bennaji explains: “NutrimiteTM is 100% natural food supplement made from a special selection of pollen and is designed to stimulate biological pest control. It helps us reach higher numbers of predatory mites throughout the whole season. With NutrimiteTM we get the swirskii army well established early on, even before pests like whitefly and thrips arrive. This prevents the pests from spreading. Also, we are able to maintain a strong population until the very end of the season.” “The advantages go well beyond fewer chemicals and better pest control” says Julien. “Fewer chemical sprays also means less labour and fewer days during which we have to restrict access of our employees to the greenhouse. It also means we gain in flexibility to easily integrate other beneficial organisms such as Delphastus in our biocontrol program. Overall, our roses look much healthier and we achieve higher production.” Mouna Ennehly, responsible for the company's IPM strategy: “I apply Nutrimite™ every two weeks using a simple manual pump. I use 300 grams per ha. After introducing swirksii sachets, I initially spray Nutrimite™ low in the crop, close to the sachets. Afterwards I also spray higher, to obtain a good distribution of the mites.” A few weeks ago, Exmora initiated a trial with the combination of swirskii mites and Nutrimite™ on Gerbera

flowers. Julien: “We hope we get the same results as in our roses, so that we can also treat our Gerbera crop in the same way.”

CN Seeds aims to make niche products UK vegetable seed company CN Seeds is making increasing advances in the important Spanish market thanks a

growing demand among consumers for previously niche fresh products, such as kale and oriental vegetables, which are gaining ever greater acceptance across Europe. One of the products that is making just such advances across Europe, is Babyleaf Kale; a vegetable which is becoming increasingly recognised for both its high quality in terms of taste and also its multiple health benefits that make it one of the healthiest products available. “There's an ever increasing demand for kale in Spain and across Europe because people are becoming more aware of the product and its health benefits,” explained CN Seeds' Craig Thomas.

Sweet-tasting and easy to cook in two minutes, Babyleaf Kale is a vegetable that has made a big impact in the US and the UK over the last 12 months and looks set to do the same across Europe, thanks to the health benefits that kale — a Superfood — can deliver. In fact, just 100g of cooked Babyleaf Kale contains 681 micrograms of Vitamin A1. To further stimulate interest in the product, CN Seeds has recently launched Jagallo Nero, a distinctively-shaped Babyleaf kale with eye-catching serrated leaves that has proven highly successful in the US market. Other products that are sure to catch the eye of visitors include the company's range of oriental vegetable seeds and herbs.

Pak choi Chifu F1 and Choy sum Gunsho are already strong sellers, with demand increasing year-on-year, while wild rocket Napoli — a quick growing variety for winter that combines uniformity with an upright habit and dark green leaf — has adapted very well to Spanish growing conditions. Coriander Cruiser, a new slow bolting Coriander for the quality market has also performed well in Spanish trials during 2014. The herb boasts a compact habit with large leaves and vibrant dark green colour, and is now protected by Plant Breeders Rights. Meanwhile, Squash Cartwheel F1 is a new hybrid, which is a significant improvement on older Patty Pan types, with precocious yellow fruit coloration that allows early stage harvest of quality fruit. Based in Ely, Cambridgeshire, CN Seeds was established in 1990 by Chris Nye, father of current operations director Dan Nye, and now exports speciality vegetable seeds throughout Europe, the USA and Australasia.

FLOWERS IPM Moscow 2014 Continued on Its Successful Course On August 27 - 29, 2014, 302 exhibitors from 23 countries showed their products and services relating to all aspects of the green sector at the trade fair for plants, horticultural technology, floristry and garden features. day before the fair went down well with international exhibitors and visitors. The participants rated this programme point as a valuable supplement and were given exciting insights into Russian plant production. In subjectrelated and market-related lectures and seminars during the fair, the visitors were able to obtain information about the newest developments in the sector. Florists used the show stage in order to demonstrate their work in front of the public. Cooperative participations from Denmark and Germany were represented this year. On the German booth, 14 companies presented themselves on over 300 square metres. The quality products "Made in Germany" and the extravagantly designed booth construction aroused great interest amongst the visitors. A lot of the exhibitors were very satisfied with the course of the 21st FLOWERS IPM Moscow and, even now, confirmed that they will be participants once again in the coming year. The current economic and political situation did not play any role with regard to the staging of the fair. The import of plants to Russia continues to be permitted. The next FLOWERS IPM Moscow will take place on August 27 29, 2015.

offer increasingly efficient technologies capable of applying decisive innovations for machinery and equipment for farming and rural lands. The salon focused on components, EIMA Components, is looking forward to a record-breaking edition. The specialized salon - a part of the EIMA International agricultural mechanization exposition scheduled for November 12 to 16 in the Bologna Trade Fair center - has already reached an all-time high of over 800 manufacturing industries signed up and confirmed ahead of others now put on a waiting list. The 2012 edition drew 760 manufacturers and in comparison to this figure, data released by the Events Office of FederUnacoma, the Italian Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers Federation, responsible for the organization of EIMA International, indicate a significant increase. This year's salon will feature an exposition area of more than 40,000 m2, 13% larger than the space allocated for the 2012 edition. Components will take over Pavilions 15, 18, 18bis and 20 and areas in Pavilions 21, 22, 26 e 29bis for the presentation of an immense array of mechanical parts, spare parts, accessories and electronic devices accounting for a total of 353 merchandise categories brought in by their manufacturers from around the globe. United Kingdom. The salon will also bring together such newly industrialized countries as China, India and Turkey, all aiming to expand their footprints on international markets supplying the manufacturing industries as well as for spare parts and accessories produced directly for end-users. Massimo Goldoni, president of FederUnacoma, said, “Out of a total of 1,800 exhibiting industries taking part in EIMA International, this means we will have nearly 800 in the components sector alone and this is an indication of how important and vital this mechanical engineering sector is and how farsighted it was to raise the profile of components by dedicating a specialized salon to them within the great Bologna exposition.” Marco Acerbi, responsible for the organization of FederUnacoma events, went on to affirm, “Moreover, components are a fundamental factor for innovation in the mechanical engineering sector and the success of EIMA Components confirms the way in which this review is truly oriented towards innovation and trained on the great numbers of professional operators interested in everything that can improve the performance, reliability and safety of machinery and equipment used for farming and all activities for the maintenance of rural lands.”

national market crisis, lack of a coherent agricultural mechanization policy, the risk of the relocation of the national industry and the unsustainable costs in enacting some EU directives were under focus at the meeting. The attention of the MEPs is already trained on the first dossier produced by the Commission.

The crisis afflicting the domestic agricultural machinery market in Italy is causing serious repercussions on the system. in France or Germany - is reducing the profits of the mechanical engineering industry, eroding the production capabilities of Italian agriculture and weakening the agricultural mechanization districts with the risk the relocation of domestic manufacturers to the countries taking in their exports to concentrate their business in the sector there. This was the picture painted by Massimo Goldoni, the FederUnacoma president, for a European Parliament audience held recently in Brussels attended by Italian MEPs in the new legislature. Present for the hearing of Italian MEPs were David Borrelli (M5S), Nicola Caputo (PD), and Lara Comi (FI), Nicola Danti (PD), Elisabetta Gardini (FI), Giovanni La Via (NCD), Massimiliano Salini (NCD), Patrizia Toia (PD) and Marco Zullo (M5S). Aided by members of the board of directors representing the eight associations in their sectors in his federation, Goldoni emphasized the front rank role played by the Italian agricultural mechanization industry and went on to underscore serious worries about a progressive “disarmament” of these manufacturers on national territory. Conditions already compromised by the sharp reduction of investments for the purchase of machinery by farming enterprises now range to the risk of a dramatic worsening with the application of European Union norms on emissions of specialist tractors designed for operations in orchards and vineyards, one of the products

strongly featured by the Italian industry. The qualified federation experts explained that using technologies now available to install devices for the recirculation of exhaust gas on what are called these “narrow track tractors” for compliance with the upcoming Phase IV requirements would come as an insurmountable obstacle from a technical point of view and would totally altering the narrow tractor type making it no longer capable of meeting the special requirements of operations in fruit orchards and vineyards. These federation experts went on to affirm that unless the Commission steps in with measures to adopt and at least extends the deadline for the application of the norm - now set at 2017 for Phase IV with 2020 tentatively set for the introduction of Phase V - a substantial part of the Italian industry will inevitably be thrown out of the market. Goldoni made the point that keeping pace with a pieces of EU legislation appears increasingly demanding and frenetic, more and more difficult, if one considers that there is the lack of specific research programs for agricultural mechanization and, above all, Italian enterprises are subjected to unfair competition caused by counterfeiting by numerous industries, especially by the emerging countries, and many of these countries are steadily flooding the European market with machines which do not have the requisites required by the EU. The requests voiced by FederUnacoma and discussed in detail in direct dealings in Brussels attracted the unanimous attention of the

Allariz International Garden Festival Proposals to participate in the 2015 edition of the Allariz International Garden Festival

can be submitted until next November 15th. An expert jury will select ten projects that will be exhibited between May and November on 2015. The theme for this edition is “Music in the garden”. Last year, 47 different projects attempted to be part of 2014 edition of Allariz International Garden Festival and it was quite difficult for the expert jury to select ten of them, which finally were displayed and can be visited in the town of Allariz (Spain) from May to November 2014. The increasing technical quality of the entries, received from places all around the world such as Korea, the Netherlands, Italy,

Austria, Portugal, France, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as from all the Spanish departments, make jury's work harder and harder every year. The Festival has been positioned, with five editions, as a benchmark for Iberian landscaping and it is focused to be known as an international one. Its main objective is to showcase new landscape talent to the 40,000 people that visit it each year (43,000 on 2013). The contest is open to all who wish to participate and its basis are available on the Festival's website: www.http://www.allariz.com/f estival/

New Study Finds that Orange Maize Improves Vitamin A in Children Just ahead of World Food Day, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has established that 'orange' vitamin A maize increases vitamin A storage in the body. This maize has been conventionally bred (nonGMO) to have higher levels of beta-carotene, a naturally occurring plant pigment that the body then converts into vitamin A. Lack of sufficient vitamin A blinds up to 500,000 children annually and increases the risk of death from disease (such as diarrhea in children). Vitamin A deficiency is widely prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa. Foods that are good sources of vitamin A, such as orange fruits, dark leafy vegetables, or meat, are not always available, or may be too expensive in some regions. In many African countries, people eat large amounts of staple foods like cassava or maize. For example, in Zambia, people eat up to a pound of white maize daily. However, this white maize provides no beta-carotene. Switching to orange maize, which is rich in beta-carotene, could potentially provide maize-dependent populations with up to half their daily vitamin A needs. In this controlled efficacy study, children from the Eastern Province of Zambia were randomly assigned to three feeding groups and received either white maize, orange maize, or a daily vitamin A supplement. After three months, both groups that received either the orange maize or vitamin A supplements showed significant

increases in their total body stores of vitamin A, with no changes observed in the group that received white maize. Lead scientist Sherry Tanumihardjo said “we were surprised to find that most of the children in this study

already had substantial stores of vitamin A. We attribute this to the success of fortifying sugar with vitamin A, the provision of vitamin A supplements to young children, and perhaps better diets. Yet, despite having adequate vitamin A stores, we

still saw this store increase in children as a result of eating the orange maize. So, I'm confident that orange maize would be especially effective in increasing body stores of vitamin A in populations suffering from vitamin A deficiency.” Unlike the form of vitamin A found in supplements and fortified foods, the body regulates conversion of betacarotene into vitamin A, and consuming high levels of betacarotene is not harmful to health. Several orange maize varieties have been released by the governments of Zambia and Nigeria. In Zambia, HarvestPlus (http://www.harvestplus.org) has provided orange maize to more than 10,000 farming households and is now working with the private sector with the goal of reaching 100,000 famers by 2015. According to Eliab Simpungwe, HarvestPlus Country Manager for Zambia, “the orange maize has been embraced by consumers once they have had a chance to taste it. When they also understand the benefits of vitamin A in the diets they are all the more enthusiastic about orange maize.” The orange maize varieties released are also high yielding, disease and virus resistant, and drought tolerant. The Zambian Government has officially recognized biofortification, which it includes in the National Food and Nutrition Strategic Plan for Zambia 2011-2015. Musonda Mofu, Acting Executive Director of the National Food and Nutrition Commission in Zambia and who was also on the study team, said “there are still many pockets where vitamin A deficiency remains a problem in Zambia. Food-based 16

approaches such as orange maize can provide peopleespecially women and childrenwith a good portion of their daily vitamin A needs through nshima or other traditional foods made from maize, that we Zambians eat every day. For us, this is cost-effective and a safe approach to improving nutrition." HarvestPlus and its partners have developed and disseminated other conventionally bred crops to provide needed vitamins and minerals in the diet. These are vitamin A cassava (Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria), vitamin A orange sweet potato (throughout Sub-Saharan Africa) and iron beans (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda). Zinc wheat and rice and iron pearl millet have been targeted to South Asia.

A 100% natural and effective way to detoxify animal feed Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, will present TOXISORB®, a 100% natural way to detoxify livestock feedstuff, at its EuroTier debut in Hannover, Germany, from November 1114, 2014. International trading of feed and feed additives means longer transportation and storage, which exposes feedstuff to risk of mould fungus attack. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), about 25% of feed worldwide is critically contaminated, leading to economic losses due to reduced animal health and eventual loss of productivity for the farming industry. The clay mineral-based TOXISORB® products help to protect livestock from dangerous mycotoxin poisons caused by mould fungi in animal feed, supporting healthy livestock and safe food production. The root-system of German FRUIT-TREEROOTSTOCKS is different, means better branched, to that of other countries. That makes regrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier even under not optimal conditions. ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTS and NECTARINES are the range of our production by tissueculture/in-vitro, stool-beds, hardwood-cuttings and seedlings. For special needs also transplanted – to have an additional better rooting-system. Now LODDERROOTSTOCKS is in a better situation, since STEFFEN LODDER is managing the production; so ERHARD LODDER (managing director) can take even more attention to the over worldwide customers and their needs. Storage from end of October until May or later for the Southern hemisphere is no problem in special temperature-controlledfacilities! NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

Thanks to the seminars having wide range of contents, not only the producers and entrepreneurs but also the academicians and scientists will have the chance of keeping up with the agriculture sector. With its favorable geographical conditions and climate, Turkey is considered to be one of the leading countries in the world in the field of food and agriculture. The restructuring efforts that began in the early 1980s, alongside a series of reforms such as privatizations and the reduction of trade barriers in the agriculture sector, resulted in a domestic market that is an NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

integral part of the world economy today. Turkey has a large and growing food and agriculture industry that corresponds to 9 percent of the overall gross value-added (GVA) and 25 percent of the employment levels in the country. Turkey is the world leader in the production of dried figs, hazelnuts, sultanas/raisins and dried apricots. It has the largest milk and dairy production in its region. In addition, Turkey has an estimated total of 11,000 plant species, whereas the total number of species in Europe is 11,500. While Turkey is becoming one of the largest markets for baked goods with its bread - an important element of the Turkish diet - subsector dairy products including milk,

yoghurt, cheese, kefir and ayran (a drink made of yoghurt and water) form an integral part of the traditional Turkish diet. Traditionally, artisan, unpackaged products have dominated the Turkish dairy market, holding back widespread growth but also offering potential to the investors. Turkey offers a set of enablers for potential agrofood investors; the Turkish government's support mechanism includes favorable regulations, tax structure, competitive and low-cost labor force and investment incentives. As part of its targets set for the agriculture sector, by 2023 Turkey aims to be among the top five producers globally. GULF AGRICULTURE

I

t is estimated that 30-36 million Americans play golf. That's nearly half of all golfers in the world. And many of those golfers play at TPC Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas located in Irving, Texas. See Figure 1 for one of the many fantastic views of the area. The resort covers 400 acres of rolling North Texas hills located just minutes from downtown Dallas. Four Seasons not only sports a challenging par 70 18-hole course designed by Jay Morrish but is also home to the Byron Nelson Golf School. And who hasn't heard of the Byron

Nelson Championship, a PGA Tour event that is held annually at Four Seasons. To sustain the popularity, prestige and professionalism of this course all greens were totally rebuilt in 2006. Irrigation is required to maintain these greens in perfect condition, especially in southern US latitudes. Therefore, the irrigation system was refurbished along with the greens. Four Seasons has three major pump stations for the irrigation systems in three distinct locations yet drawing water from the same interconnect pond/stream

system that is fed from stormwater runoff from the resort grounds. This designed water source is very conservation-minded since it uses no groundwater or municipal water, leaving those sources for more critical needs. Runoff water feeding this pond contains some sediments and debris from the surrounding landscape. But more important are nutrients that are picked up by surface runoff. These nutrients are food for aquatic organism such as algae and other phytoplankton. Once picked up by the pump stations, this organic debris is notorious NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

for plugging irrigation sprinklers and jets. One plugged sprinkler on a green means no water. No water quickly leads to brown greens with dry stiff ground cover not something a prestigious golf course and resort wants. To keep the course well watered, labor-intensive maintenance programs are required to remove plugged sprinklers, clean them out manually and then reassemble. Four Seasons began an irrigation improvement program several years ago by installing automatic filters on the largest pump station (Pump Station #1) designed for 4000 gpm. The 200-micron screens in these filters did a very good job of protecting the irrigation sprinklers that kept the greens green. But after a few years, the coated carbon steel filter bodies began to rust. Recently, the other two pump stations began experiencing increased suspended solids which plugged sprinklers at an increasing frequency. The maturing ecology of the pond system was producing more phytoplankton (mostly algae) NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

thereby, increasing the total suspended solids concentration of the raw water feeding the pump stations. Paul Earnest, Director of Golf at Four Seasons decided to take a proactive stance and install filtration on the remaining two

pump stations but wanted to eliminate the rust problems experienced previously. Mr. Earnest searched for a company to provide a rustproof filter system that performed well and was cost effective. His search led him to Orival, Inc.

Figure 3. Pump Station #3. GULF AGRICULTURE

39

Figure 4. Cutaway view.

Filtration specialists at Orival suggested a water sample be analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS) and particle size distribution on a mass basis. These analyses provided engineers at Orival addition information to design a filtration system specific to the conditions at Four Season. Pump Station #2 has four fixed speed pumps of 100 hp, 75 hp, 50 hp and 25 hp. The maximum design flow rate is 2500 gpm at 120 psi. Two Orival Model OR-08-PS-S all stainless steel automatic selfcleaning screen filters were installed in the summer of 2006 at Pump Station #2. Each filter was equipped with a screen having a filtration degree of 100-microns. The two filters are mounted in parallel on a common manifold inside the pump house. See Figure 2. One 40

GULF AGRICULTURE

micro-processor based controller handles all the functions of both filters. A differential pressure switch (DP switch) senses when the pressure loss across the filters, due to screen plugging, reaches 7 psi. The DP switch then signals the controller to begin a cleaning cycle. The first filter goes through its complete cleaning cycle in 8-10 seconds. The second filter then cleans itself in another 8-10 seconds. Each filter continues to filter even during its cleaning cycle preventing any interruption in total water flow to the irrigation system. Brian Watson, Irrigation Manager for Four Seasons said, “Since the filters were installed, there have been no plugged sprinklers on that irrigation zone. I am very pleased with the new filtration system. Samples were collected before

and after the filters at Pump Station #2 and the results showed a 67% reduction in TSS. The finer particles that passed through the filter and on into the irrigation system were small enough to pass through the sprinkler nozzles with no threat of clogging. Pump Station #3 has a design flow rate of 500 gpm from two 25 hp fixed speed pumps again at 120 psi. A single all stainless steel Orival Model OR-06-PE-S filter with 100-micron screen was designed and installed at this site. See Figure 3. The same model controller used at Pump Station #2 was installed to operate this single filter. Cleaning cycles are initiated by DP and/or time and they last for about 8 seconds. Paul Earnest says the filters have performed just as intended. NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

Greens are protected and laborhours are minimized. Mr. Earnest describes the operation of the filters as follows: Dirty water enters the inlet flange (see Figure 4) then passes through the coarse screen from outside-in removing large hard objects. The pre-screened water then flows to the inside of the fine screen. As water passes from inside-out in the fine screen, suspended solids are stopped if they are too big to pass through the screen openings. Clean filtered water then leaves the filter through the outlet flange. As more and more material builds up on the inside surface of the fine screen a pressure drop in the system begins to build. When a preset pressure drop threshold is reached across the fine

NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

screen, the controller is signaled to initiate a cleaning cycle. The first step in the cleaning cycle is to open the rinse valve to atmospheric pressure which quickly drops the pressure in the flush chamber. Because the hollow dirt collector connects the end openings in the nozzles to the flush chamber, water quickly moves from the nozzle openings, through the dirt collector into the flush chamber and out the rinse valve to a drain. Since the nozzle opening is nearly touching the screen surface, water rushes backward through the screen (outside-in) in a small area (about the size of a dime) at a velocity exceeding 50 ft/sec. This intense energy sucks off the stickiest material and expels it from the system

though the rinse valve. The hydraulic motor then rotates the dirt collector while the hydraulic cylinder moves the dirt collector linearly. The spiral movement of each nozzle on the dirt collector assures that every square inch of fine screen surface is passed at least twice by a nozzle and is sucked clean of all debris in less than 10 seconds. The next cleaning cycle will begin when the pressure drop threshold is met again or until a preset time interval has been reached. This technology demonstrates the elegance in simplicity that results in reliable performance. Golf courses east, west, north or south all encounter the same problem: too much TSS in irrigation water. Now a reliable solution has been found.

around 15.6 tonnes per hectare. From late 1990s, Frito-Lay and Simplot introduced the modern potato growing techniques to a number of model farms in China. These farms use central pivot irrigation systems and employ modern machinery to undertake most, if not all, of NOVEMBER DECEMBER 2014

the field operations. The bulk of these farms are located in Inner Mongolia and north Hebei province where large, relatively flat fields are available. Currently, such farms occupy a combined area of about 45,000-55,000 hectares; their average yield is much higher than that of the traditional farm growing potatoes in China, at about 45 to 60 tonnes per hectare. Those areas where the modern potato farms are located have two significant features compared to many other potato growing areas in China and elsewhere: 1. Sandy soils - 90% of the soils in this region are lightto-medium sandy in texture. In such soils, plant nutrients can be leached out by irrigation waters and rainfall, greatly reducing the efficiency of fertilizers. 2. Alkaline soil - in these regions, the soil PH is in the range 7.5 to 8, and may even reach 8.2 in some places. This restricts the availability to the crop plants of a number of important plant nutrients, such as phosphate, iron, manganese, copper and zinc. In 2007, Monband, in partnership with SQM, began supplying high quality water soluble fertilizers to the modern potato farms. At that time, these farms were expanding rapidly. Monband invested heavily in research and field experiments relating to the use of fertilizer on potatoes in the prevailing local soil conditions. As a consequence, around 95% of the potato growers in this area benefit from fertilizer regimes based on high quality water

soluble fertilizers supplied by Monband. Monband introduced the split application of water soluble fertilizers, especially the use of potassium nitrate and soluble phosphorus fertilizers, to the growers in China. The company held many seminars each year to introduce the latest fertigation and nutrient management technologies. The aims of this program were to persuade local farmers to change traditional fertilization methods and to use the right fertilizer at the right time. Below are the main principles of fertilization of macro-nutrients suggested by Monband; these are now widely used by many of the potato growers that attended the seminars: N:50-60% of the total N use should be applied as a base dress before planting, with a further 10% applied after emergence and before tuber initiation and the remaining 30%-40% by fertigation or foliar application. The use of ammonium sulphate rather than urea is advised during the early stage of the season to encourage quick plant uptake of N and to adjust the soil pH because ammonium sulphate is an acidic fertilizer. P: P is very important for the developing of the root system and tuber set. P is immobile in the soil; it does not move readily with water. As such, it is recommended that 80% of the total P is applied prior to planting, with the remaining 20% applied during tuber initiation to ensure that sufficient P is available to

meet the periods of high plant demand for this nutrient e.g. root system development, and the formation of stolon and new tubers. Also, an application of MKP (30-45 kg per ha) is recommended one month before harvest to ensure the plant matures naturally and to harden the skin of the tuber in order to damage during transportation and improve storage quality. As with ammonium sulphate, MAP is an acidic fertilizer which helps to lower soil PH. K: Potato is a particularly K-hungry crop, requiring

larger quantities of K than any other plant nutrient. As with P, K is largely immobile is the soil; however, in sandy soils with low cation exchange capacity, the movement of K does occur. Monband suggests applying 45-55% of K before

planting and the remainder after the stage of flower buds by fertigation or surface spreading (using granular K fertilizer). Especially during the tuber development stage, the application of high efficiency K fertilizer such as

NPK water soluble fertilizers with a high K content and potassium nitrate by fertigation is very important, as this ensures that the huge demand for soluble K by the new tubers is met, resulting in high tuber yields at harvest.

Below are the fertilizer schedules relating to a Monband field trial undertaken in Wuchuan County, Inner Mongolia, China. This regime produced a yield of 65 tonnes per hectare.

Introduction It is well-established that feeding insufficient levels of threonine (Thr) to poultry can result in reduced growth and performance (Kidd et al. 2003). It has also been suggested however that, under commercial conditions supplementing Thr above what is considered nutritionally adequate may be beneficial to overcome stresses on the gastrointestinal tract. This effect of Thr may be due to improvement in production of intestinal mucin secretion and or stimulation of the gut immune system (Horn et al., 2009). The study by Kidd et al. (2003) actually showed that feeding of Thr at graded levels to broiler chickens reared under dirty environment responded in a positive linear manner for performance and production. In support, Corzo et al. (2007) reported that Thr requirements for maximum production vary between 0.71 to 0.74 % and 0.73 to 0.78 % when reared in new and builtup litter, respectively. Based on these results it seems likely that to obtain optimum production and performance in broiler chickens, the background or unavoidable stressors associated with commercial conditions should be considered when determining the Thr requirement. In Asia, production is still often in open house systems with

natural ventilation, and such conditions can be expected to increase the stress level in broilers. The objective of this study was to estimate the effect of increasing dietary Thr levels on performance of broiler chickens raised in an opensided house facility. This study was conducted at Nong Lam University, HCMC, Vietnam. Experimental Design Two hundred and forty 1-dayold Cobb 500 broiler chickens (mixed sex) were randomly allocated to 24 floor pens of 10 birds in each pen in an open sided house system. Broiler chicks were fed basal starter diets for 0- 10d followed by experimental finisher diets from 10-41d formulated mainly with cornsoybean meal with 8 replicates

per diet. The feed ingredient composition of the experimental basal diet is given in Table 1. During the finisher phase (10-41d), three dietary treatments including basal (control) and Thr supplemented diets were prepared by addition of LThreonine at 0, 0.09 and 0.15 %. Diets were formulated based on ideal amino acid ratios as recommended by Evonik Degussa (QuickChick, 1.2; Table 2), with the exception of the basal control diet, which intentionally contained low levels of Thr. The Thr requirement on SID basis for broiler chickens during the finisher phase (1041d) is 0.66 %. The ratio of Threonine:Lysine (Thr:Lys) was increased through supplementing L-Thr to the base diet in order to create three treatments with total Thr: Lys of 63, 70, and 76 % (58, 67 and 73 % on SID basis). The calculated levels of total Thr and Lys in the experimental diets were confirmed by analysis. The calculated and analyzed values of total and supplemental amino acid concentrations and profiles are given in Table 2. Feed and water were provided ad libitum. Body weight gain and feed intake were measured at the end of the experiment and feed conversion ratio was calculated. Tenth day body weight was considered for calculation of the weight gain.

Thrunsupplemented diet (Thr:Lys ratio of 62 %; Figure 1). The actual percentage of Thr intake was used to measure the growth response in birds. The efficiency of feed utilization was increased when the birds were fed Thr

at Thr:Lys ratios of 70 and 75 % (Figure 2). Results of the economic analysis are shown in Table 3. The income over feed cost (IOFC) for the birds fed diets supplemented with Thr was 170 and 695 USD higher

respectively than those fed the Thrunsupplemented diet. The results of this study indicate that under practical feeding conditions of broilers raised in an open house system with natural ventilation a supplementation of Thr above commercial recommendations could be beneficial to achieve higher performance. The response to the increase in dietary Thr concentration may be due to improved gastrointestinal function including intestinal integrity (Kidd et al., 2003). This situation might have increased nutrients absorption from the gastrointestinal tract with enhanced nutrient utilization efficiency. The nutrient losses at the gut level hence could be minimized.
