News SUSTAINABLE AGTECH FIRM - RED SEA FARMS ATTRACTS $18.5 MILLION STRATEGIC RAISE AS TECH PERFORMANCE SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS Red Sea Farms, the Saudi Arabia and UAE AgTech business whose one-of-a-kind technology enables commercial farming using a low energy, zero freshwater sustainable climate control, announces a $18.5 million strategic fund raise. The fund raise was co-led by Wa’ed - the venture capital arm of Saudi Aramco and The Savola Group - the leading
strategic investment holding group in MENA food and retail, through their corporate venture capital program. KAUST Innovation Fund, one of Red Sea Farms’ original investors, is also participating, along with OlsonUbben LLC, an investment entity owned by Tony Olson and Jeffrey Ubben. Tony Olson is the CEO of SPINS, a leading wellnessfocused data company and advocate for the Natural Product Industry, and Jeffrey Ubben is the Founder and Managing Partner at Inclusive Capital Partners and a pioneer in impact investing. Proceeds will support Red Sea Farms’ global and regional expansion plans – including expansion of the fresh produce
business in the GCC. Global expansion is focused on technology development, and productization - with first generation product sales expected by Q4 2022. Red Sea Farms also announces the appointment of a new global COO and regional CEO for the Middle East, Simon Roopchand. The company will leverage Roopchand’s previous CEO experience with Lorne Stewart and proven track record in leading strategic growth to capitalise on the vast opportunities in the Middle East region. Operationally, Red Sea Farms has been very active, and announced its expansion into the USA in January 2022. It has
BIOBEST AND PATS MAKE DATA-DRIVEN CROP PROTECTION ACCESSIBLE Thanks to a powerful alliance with technology company PATS, Biobest's extensive portfolio of IPM solutions has gained a scouting tool. From May 16, growers can take advantage of PATS-C, a system that detects realtime flying pests, such as moths, in the greenhouse. This data allows earlier and more accurate introduction of biological agents. “To measure is to know,” says Sam Gui, Market Development Manager High Tech IPM at Biobest. “The plug and play cameras from PATS provide information about when, where and how much moths are active in the greenhouse. It is completely automatic, requiring no staff, and can often provide data before the pests are detected visually – saving the growers time in their scouting programme.” “Biobest is a strong believer of data-driven cultivation and the numerous benefits it will create for
the growers. This new partnership with PATS will proof a golden combination. With this data, our advisors can provide even better tailored advice, making the IPM programme more robust while further reducing the use of corrective agents. Delivering benefits to several parties, growers can reduce their use of products, making their crop protection programme more efficient, while consumers get products with as little residue as possible." Intelligent scouting “By including PATS cameras in Biobest's product range, this smart scouting tool will quickly become accessible to growers worldwide,” says Bram Tijmons, CEO & co-founder of PATS. He emphasises that this is a 'smart' system. "PATS-C continuously records the presence and population built-up of moths. This allows the grower to monitor more accurately

and time the introduction of biological agents better. The system brings the scouting data to the grower in a form of a dashboard at his fingertips for him to consult the situation in his greenhouse anytime anywhere. With this technology, we also learn more about the behaviour of the pests, such as which hours they are active. This can then be used to improve timing on the day of application itself."

BIOSTRONG® FERTILE – EFFICIENCY IN PRODUCTION OF DAYOLD CHICKS As part of Delacon's phytogenic product line for poultry, Biostrong® Fertile represents proven natural fertility support for breeding flocks. The unique formulation was specially developed to enhance reproductive performance and control oxidative stress in breeding males. A comprehensive range of essential oils, flavonoids, and saponins, all obtained from natural sources, support the oxidative resilience of semen and its components and contribute to
optimized hormonal processes. With Biostrong® Fertile, Delacon offers a revolutionary natural solution to support the reproduction of breeding males, which increases the percentage of fertilized eggs. The formulation is based on extensive and deep knowledge in the universe of phytogenic active substances and their respective effects on the metabolism of farm animals. Phytogenic compounds can mitigate adverse oxidative effects since those substances can raise the sperm count and functionality and have a positive impact on reproduction. Improving males' fertility is the most efficient way to strengthen the production of day-old chicks. Sperm cells are sensitive to free radicals due to their significant content of lipids. This oxidative reaction may impact the morphology and functionality of the spermatozoa. Moreover, the
6 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com
free radicals can interfere with the DNA transported by the sperm cells, reducing the viability and quality of embryos and the offspring. Biostrong® Fertile is a unique and compelling contribution, helping to reduce oxidative stress in healthy breeding males, which can regulate testosterone production and semen quality parameters, thus indirectly contributing to the health of the reproductive performance level. “Biostrong® Fertile is a tailored solution, addressing a primary customer need to optimize breeding flocks' fertility. Its technology is based exclusively on natural plantderived compounds that enhance males’ healthy fertility, which is the most efficient way to strengthen the production of day-old chicks. The Delacon team is convinced of the effectiveness of Biostrong® Fertile to support producers in boosting the reproductive performance of their breeders' flocks.”, so Roberto Montanhini Neto, Global Unit Lead Monogastrics at Delacon.

JOINT PRESENTATION VDL COMPANIES DURING VIV EUROPE During VIV Europe VDL Agrotech, VDL Jansen and VDL Insect Systems will jointly present themselves on stand 11.B034. The three companies are part of the Foodtech cluster of VDL Groep. The VDL companies working in the Foodtech cluster focus on innovation and making the food chain more sustainable.
We do this by developing and producing inventive processing and packaging machines and systems that are supplied to the global food industry, but we also develop and produce machines and systems for food production itself. An interesting market in which VDL is active in (feed) systems for the poultry, pig and insect industry. "Strength through cooperation”, the slogan which all VDL companies stand for, is reflected on the stand. The 3 companies complement each other perfectly in development, production and technology. The feeding systems from VDL Agrotech and the laying nests and aviaries from VDL Jansen have been appreciated for many years as durable and reliable systems of high quality! This high quality is
guaranteed by the fact that the production of the systems takes place in the Netherlands. VDL Insect Systems focuses on the development of production solutions for the insect breeding industry and can thereby make use of the knowledge and expertise of VDL Agrotech and VDL Jansen. Quite a mouthful. There is a lot that VDL Insect Systems has to offer. Standard production solutions and custom solutions. During the VIV they will present some of their solutions on the stand. In addition Geert Poels, Business Development Manager at VDL Insect Systems will give a lecture during the Insects for Feed conference on 1 June from 13.00 to 15.00 hours, organized by VIV Worldwide.

News MYCOTECHNOLOGY PARTNERS WITH OMAN INVESTMENT AUTHORITY TO TARGET ALTERNATIVE PROTEIN OPPORTUNITY Oman Investment Authority (OIA) and MycoTechnology, Inc. have established a groundbreaking joint venture that will use locally-grown dates to produce high-quality mushroom-based protein. The two parties will collaborate on building a state-of-the-art production facility in Oman to scale up and commercialize this novel source of nutritious, sustainable protein. It represents the next generation of innovation driven by MycoTechnology’s proprietary
fermentation platform, which harnesses mushroom mycelia to create transformative ingredients. The strategic partnership between OIA and MycoTechnology is in line with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to attract modern technologies to the country. It links OIA’s local knowledge and public sector relationships with MycoTechnology’s cutting-edge technology. It aspires to transform the food supply landscape in the region and reflects OIA’s commitment to achieving a sustainable future by increasing local food production. Oman is one of the world’s top 10 producers of dates, growing about 400 thousand
tonnes per year. However, more than half goes to waste or animal feed. The new joint venture is expected to upcycle a significant portion of these excess dates, using the natural sugar present in the fruit as a source of carbon to fuel the production of mushroombased protein. Construction of the new facility is due to start in the first half of 2023 on a 10-hectare site. Commercial production is scheduled to begin by the second quarter of 2025, with up to 16,000 tonnes of dates to be processed each year. Once operational, the partners intend for the new facility to evolve into the Middle East’s leading innovation hub for food

EVONIK PUBLISHED FIRST EDITION OF THE METAMINO® ATLAS Evonik has published the first edition of the MetAMINO® ATLAS. The report displays the results of 15 performance trials investigating the relative bioavailability of supplementary methionine sources in animal diets. “For cost-effective purchasing, feed formulation
and animal production, precise knowledge about the relative nutritive value of DL-methionine compared with liquid MHA-FA and MHA-Ca is essential,” says Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, head of the Efficient Nutrition product line at Evonik. “With the MetAMINO® ATLAS, we want to support our business partners in making knowledge-based purchase decisions for sustainable and economical livestock operations.” The trials were conducted in eleven countries on five continents under different climatic, geographic and farm conditions - in experimental settings as well as at commercial farms with broiler chickens, laying hens and aqua species. “Across all trials and all species, we found that
comparable animal performance criteria were achieved when 100 units of MHA-products were replaced with 65 units of MetAMINO®" says Nils Niedner, product manager MetAMINO®. The MetAMINO® ATLAS 2022 further includes a selection of latest scientific articles, conference abstracts and peer reviewed publications regarding the bioefficacy of the commercially available methionine forms.

During this year’s harvest season from January to May, EAG expects to increase its output of blueberries to 290 tons, compared to 210 tons in 2021. Through expanded production and regular planned exports to Asian markets, EGFT

News increasingly become the focus of a debate within society. The UN Agenda 2030 highlights the fact that both human consumer behaviour and production technology must change. ”The International Green Week will accompany this change and provide a forum for the necessary discourse in society“, said Green Week project manager Lars Jaeger. Green topics have a long history at the Green Week. “At recent events there has been an increasing focus on the question of how we can co-exist better and more sustainably in the future. With ’Green Up Your Life‘, the Green Week is providing a forum for this discourse”, said Jaeger. Exhibitors, associations, institutions, NGOs and others will be central to the theme
world and will feature information and specialist knowledge on living sustainably. Registrations are now open for stands at the International Green Week, with the application deadline set for 5 August 2022.

OMAN: FIRST COUNTRY IN THE REGION TO PRODUCE SCIENCE-BASED ASSESSMENTS FOR ITS SHARK POPULATION
Shark populations continue to decline due to unsustainable shark catch practices, including shark finning. Hence, as many countries begin to prioritize the importance of marine life protection and fishing regulations, Oman takes the first step to outline science-based shark catch assessments to further regulate shark catch and trade in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora
(CITES), with the support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). In the Middle East and North Africa region, Oman will be the first country to carry a study in the direction of outlining a science based shark catch assessment known as “CITES Non-Detrimental Findings” (NDFs). Funded by the Shark Conservation Fund, and with the technical support of Save our Seas Foundation, the three-day workshop started on 17 May in Muscat, Oman. CITES is a convention regulating the international trade in endangered species between countries, which are referred to as “parties”. To regulate and systemize the international trade process, CITES

designated “Appendix II” list for species which are allowed to be internationally traded for commercial purposes on the condition that it is regulated and its export will not be detrimental to the survival of that species in their natural habitats. The decision on whether or not the export is detrimental will be determined by the Scientific Authority of the State of export based on the NDF assessment. NDF is carried out through data collection, which is the core purpose of the NDF. Therefore, to complete the NDF, the data collected must comprise the biological characteristics of the species— breeding period, species count and survival, the pressure on the species in terms of catch and trade, and finally the existing laws concerning its protection.

PERSTORP LAUNCHES GASTRIVIX™ AVI – A UNIQUE GUT HEALTH SOLUTION COMBINING THE BENEFITS OF VALERIC AND BUTYRIC ACID Perstorp is expanding on its innovative range of broiler
feed solutions after the launch of Gastrivix™ Avi in late March 2022. The company is the first to pioneer the commercial use of valeric acid in animal nutrition, following successful trials of Gastrivix™ Avi. Like butyric acid, valeric acid is naturally created by the gut microbiota of broilers, although in too small quantities for optimal gut health during production cycles. Perstorp has used complex organic chemistry to create esters of valeric acid, which were tested over many years in a multitude of combinations with butyric acid esters to develop the right synergy, and the best match with nature.

UNIFORM BUD BURST AND FLOWERING: BIOLCHIM'S WINNING SOLUTION
V
egetative awakening is a crucial moment for fruit crops: this phase will in fact affect all the stages of the plant’s development, ultimately determining the quantity and quality of production. This is
28 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com
why it is essential to start off on the right foot. The issues Due to physiological, climatic and environmental factors, bud burst often occurs irregularly. This can occur
even if the chilling need of the crop has been met and also in plants on which a dormancy breaking agent has been applied. On crops such as wine grapes, table grapes and kiwifruit, the phenomenon of
May-June 2022
Biostimulants apical dominance is very frequent and leads to the faster development of the shoots located at the tip of the branches. These phenomena have negative effects on the uniformity of flowering, resulting in non-fruiting (loss of production) and uneven ripening of the fruits (prolongation of harvest times). For stone fruit and pome fruit, it is not uncommon to observe an uneven development of the floral buttons and inflorescences. Uneven flowering, especially in the self-sterile varieties, causes reduced or lack of fruit set which is followed by substantial productive loss. For an adequate cross-pollination it is necessary a synchronous flowering of the pollinating plants with the producing ones. The solution to improve bud burst and flowering FOLICIST is an innovative
May-June 2022
biostimulant based on folic acid, glycin betaine, proline, cysteine and plant extracts, which naturally uniforms bud breaking, flowering and fruit setting. FOLICIST favours the balanced development of the plant, reducing apical dominance and preparing the fruits to a uniform enlargement. During bud breaking, flowering and fruit setting, the plant requires high amounts of energy, proteins, sugars and nucleic acids to support intense cell division. Folic acid stimulates the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, while cysteine and proline are necessary for the production of energy in the cells. Plant extracts provide anti-stress compounds and natural growth promoters. With FOLICIST, shoots
grow quicker and simultaneously, and flowering is more homogeneous, setting optimal conditions for a uniform ripening of the fruits. Folicist: • r educes apical dominance, even on varieties prone to the problem; • synchronizes flowering, which is essential in varieties that require crosspollination; • improves fruit set; • favors the balance in plant development, improving its architecture and photosynthetic capacity; • favors uniform ripening of the fruits (concentration of the harvest) and high quality of the harvest. CLARIANT’S SYNERGEN® DRT: TAKING DRONE-ASSISTED PEST MANAGEMENT TO NEW HEIGHTS
T
he use of drones in farming can make crop spraying more precise, economical and safe, and due to these benefits, it is taking off on farms worldwide. However, it also brings new challenges: as drones have small tanks, they need to carry a more concentrated mix of actives and spray very fine drops to be effective. That’s why, as one of the leading global supplier of specialty chemicals for agriculture, Clariant has launched DropForward™: a focused approach to providing precision application with adjuvants and co-formulants. We offer our customers Synergen DRT: the first solution to come out of our DropForward concept. Synergen DRT, the drift control agent and biological activator specifically for drones. Developed in Clariant’s hightech facilities in Germany, and under real-life conditions in

Brazil, this high-performing adjuvant allows the application of standard pesticides under the low volume conditions of small drone tanks. “Synergen DRT helps to control drift and volatility of fine droplets during application and helps improving the coverage and penetration of the actives in the leaves, boosting biological performance as well as making drone spraying more sustainable and environmentally friendly," said Fabio Caravieri, Clariant’s Head of Marketing, Industrial & Consumer Specialties. Drones were used in several field tests in Brazil, in crops such as coffee, cotton, orange and wheat, spraying at low volume in experimental plots where increased coverage and deposition was observed with the addition of Synergen DRT in the application tank, resulting in higher product efficiency. The new adjuvant technology has shown that with small doses of the
adjuvant, a robust performance is obtained in the control of drift and performance, even when used with mixtures of products, and standing out in the desiccation of weeds, ensuring higher efficacy of herbicides.” “Precision farming, with increasingly data driven decision making, is the future and drones will play a big part in this. It is already used in fertilizer application due to significantly higher savings potential and the next big wave is expected to be with pesticides. RICE IN UAE DESERT A
gritech firm Terraplus Solutions has completed successful trials of open-air rice production in the United Arab Emirates, and for the first time the staple crop has been grown economically and sustainably in the country. The news comes on the eve of the ‘Food for Future Summit’ in Dubai. The results of the trials are a big step forward for the possibility of rice being grown in the UAE, as they indicate that rice can be produced domestically for a cheaper price than import. This is a key discovery that could benefit the UAE National Food Security Strategy 2051, which outlines rice as a core food item. Speaking about the successful trial results Patrick Stevens, Managing Director and co-founder of Terraplus Solutions said, “Access to affordable and secure rice production is essential. Traditionally this has meant relying on imports, but these

findings show that with the right technology the UAE can produce rice right here in its own soil at a competitive price and using a sustainable amount of water.” The average subsidized price for an imported tonne of rice in the UAE is approximately $ 817. The country has imported more than 900,000 tonnes of rice over the past 12 months. The trials targeted production of rice to be grown for $ 817 per tonne or cheaper across a sample farm in Dhaid, Sharjah. The homegrown UAE business factored in all known rice production costs including labour, seeds, fertilizer and water. The latter resource is the most important dynamic given the scarcity of water in the UAE. The team deployed theT+ system, a revolutionary subsurface irrigation method developed by Terraplus Solutions, to reduce enormous amounts of water. Before these trials, the first three weeks of rice germination from seed to a two-leaf plant
would have used around 200 litres of water per kilogram. Instead, the result of using Terraplus Solutions’ T+ system provided a water saving of more than 99 percent to just 0.9 litres per kilogram of rice produced. Stevens continued, “We are delighted to support the UAE in finding cheaper and more sustainable ways to produce food domestically. We welcome the opportunity to explore these findings further with the public and private sector. Through innovation and collaboration, the UAE can be a global leader of food production in desert climates.” Terraplus Solutions is an award-winning agritech business that produces irrigation solutions for open air agriculture across the Middle East. President of Italian scuba diving equipment manufacturer, Ocean Reef Group, and his son, Luca Gamberini. Their team of engineers, divers and scientists have been working to prove the viability of cultivating herbs, fruit and vegetables underwater. Nemo’s Garden’s key innovation, a sub-aqua biosphere, is a unique type of underwater greenhouse, able to harness the positive environmental factors
of the ocean – temperature stability, evaporative water generation, CO2 absorption, the abundance of oxygen and inherent protection from pests – to create an environment ideal for crop cultivation. The team has not only successfully harvested a variety of crops from its prototype biospheres, but also discovered that plants grown in this environment are nutritionally

Underwater Farming richer than those grown traditionally. The next big hurdle in achieving their goal was to turn this prototype into a solution that could be deployed globally; however, they didn’t want to wait another 10 years to make that happen. Harsh winters, short summers and initial seafloor-use permit limitations capped Nemo’s Garden to one growth cycle a year, which has meant only one innovation cycle per annum. Design changes, lengthy physical testing and heavy manual monitoring processes during the growth cycle led the Nemo’s Garden team to seek out ways to speed up their innovation and scale the operation. The team reached out to TekSea’s Matteo Cavalleroni for insight on how to leverage cutting edge technologies to achieve their goals. After the initial consultation, Siemens was invited to join the project, leveraging the Xcelerator portfolio of software and its services to help Nemo’s Garden get to the next stage of development and get ready for industrialization/commoditization. “When I first saw Siemens’ digital twin technology, I was mesmerized. Nemo’s Garden is a one-of-a-kind system and we need to adapt to each environment where it is to be installed. If you can model that environment virtually before you start, you can foresee the challenges and address them in the best way,” said Luca Gamberini, Co-Founder, Nemo’s Garden. “We have seen benefits in understanding the flow of water around the shapes of our biospheres. We have a greater understanding of the points of stress on the structure around the biospheres. We also understand how the different interactions of the solar radiation, the temperature and all the physical factors, act on

the plants. All thanks to the ability of the digital twin to replicate our system.” A comprehensive digital twin of the Nemo’s Garden biosphere has been built that encompasses not only its design evolution using Siemens’ NX™ software, but also enables simulation of the growing conditions within it, the impact of the equipment on the body of water, as well as the full environment in which they are installed – all accomplished using Siemens’ Simcenter™ STAR-CCM+™ software. The Nemo’s Garden team are no longer limited by weather conditions, seasonality
and short growing seasons or limitations on diving and monitoring. Adaptations to the biospheres can be tested in the virtual world, enabling the team to refine the design at a massively accelerated rate. Monitoring at the edge In addition to engineering the physical biosphere, Nemo’s Garden also needed to optimize and scale the processes for growing, tracking, and harvesting the plants. To create a sustainable business that did not rely on sending trained divers to collect data, a fully digital, automated approach was created that drew on Siemens’

Underwater Farming extensive experience in leveraging software to automate traditional farming practices. Existing video of the growing cycles along with reference data from traditional farming operations of the same target crops, at various growth stages and health conditions was analyzed using Siemens’ MindSphere® service. From this, Siemens was able to train a machine learning algorithm to monitor plant growth as well as the environmental conditions within the domes. When this algorithm is deployed onto Siemens’ Industrial Edge computing devices in each biosphere, the plants can be monitored via a cloud-based dashboard throughout the season, from anywhere, in real time. Next season, these Industrial Edge devices will be connected to actuators – to automatically adjust air circulation, humidity, irrigation and nutritional dosing throughout the whole season. This will be the foundation of a global agricultural service, optimized for subsea operations and tuned for each of the world’s oceans. Through true adoption of digital transformation, Nemo’s Garden has taken something that began as a light-hearted challenge over dinner with friends and are turning this unique concept into a

to push forward with plans to further optimize their designs and automate their processes for global deployment. “Digitalization isn’t only for big companies, it is for all companies. In fact, great gains can often be realized in smaller or start-up companies. The work we do with startups can amplify the impact they have on the world, aiding in and speeding up innovation,” said Eryn Devola, Vice President of Sustainability, Siemens Digital Industries Software. “It is easy to get excited when you we find a passionate team with humancentered technology that is working to feed people while having a positive impact on the environment.” For more information, visit www.nemosgarden.com

SAFEGUARDING THE FOOD SAFETY AND PRODUCT QUALITY OF BABY LEAF VEGETABLES AT AN INDOOR VERTICAL FARM
A
lthough it is home to 5.6 million people, the citystate of Singapore is located on a small island that covers merely 715 square kilometers (276 square miles). As a consequence of crowding, it has been necessary to expand upwards, accommodating residents and businesses in high-rise buildings. Land is in such great demand in Singapore that only 1% is used for conventional farming, with local food production meeting less than 10% of residents' nutritional needs. But now agriculture, too, is reaching for the skies: investment is increasing in indoor vertical farming. This trend is being encouraged by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), the authority with the mission of ensuring that the nation has a resilient supply of food safety and food security from farm-to-fork. The SFA calculates that multi-story LED vegetable farms can produce 10 to 15 times more Vegetables, per square meter, than conventional farms. One leader in the shift to vertical farming is Sustenir Agriculture, which runs indoor farms in Malaysia and Hong Kong and will open another in Jakarta by early 2023. Sustenir describes itself as specializing in growing "superfoods for supercities, farming at the heart of demand in urban populations to minimize carbon footprint whilst maximizing positive impact in local communities." Sustenir harvests crops daily all-year-round, selling them as 100% clean, with no need for washing before eating. The

company's indoor farm uses no pesticides, generates 92% less carbon emissions than imported produce, and consumes 95% less water than conventional farming on arable land. The company recently decided to take care of food safety and product quality by investing in its first optical sorting machine from TOMRA Food. Indoor farming challenges Sustenir's Singapore farm grows kale, curly kale, spinach, arugula (rocket), and lettuce. Even when grown in a precisely controlled indoor environment, these crops are vulnerable to a wide range of natural defects: chlorosis, black spot, crystallization, black rot, tip burn, light burn, discoloration, and purple leaf. Another risk at indoor farms is foreign materials. Though it is true that indoor crops are grown in clean and dry conditions, even so, they face the threats of insect damage (from the tiny fungus gnat), foam, and fragments of plastic. Sustenir initially removed defects and foreign materials manually, relying on the vision
Indoor Farming
and concentration of 20 people. But human sorters are subjective, imperfect, and significantly less accurate when tired or bored. And because manual sorting is a relatively slow process (Sustenir found that each person could typically sort 24 kg per hour), it restricts throughput. An optical sorting machine, however, is accurate, consistent, and fast. What's more, optical sorters also reduce food waste by enhancing yields and recuperating some rejected product for sale at lower grades. It was only logical, then, that Sustenir should transition from manual to mechanical sorting. Logical, too, that the business should consider acquiring a machine from TOMRA Food, the industry leader which combines world-class expertise with locallevel customer support. And when Sustenir's senior managers witnessed a live online demonstration of a TOMRA machine sorting baby leaf vegetables, with results precisely quantified, their minds were made up: this was a musthave.

Feed Solutions
NEW DOUBLE-ENCAPSULATION TECHNOLOGY SECURES PERFORMANCE OF BROILERS IN CHALLENGING CONDITIONS Author Dr. Stephanie Ladirat R&D Director at Nuqo Feed Additives
Gut Health: The new paradigm in food animal production With the continuous increase in the world population and the consequent demand for animal protein worldwide, the search for new strategies to optimize the efficiency of food production has become a major focus. With respect to agricultural animals, optimization of animal health is a key component of improving production efficiency. During the last decade, there has been new emphasis placed on the gut of the animal and in particular gastrointestinal health as gut health can influence animal development, health and susceptibility to disease, and nutrient metabolism. Optimal gut health is of vital importance to the performance of production animals. Understanding the interactions between these diverse physiological features emphasizes the extent of areas encompassed by gut health and the ability to regulate
42 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com
animal production (Kogut, 2016). Furthermore, public concerns about the industry’s dependency on the use of growth-promoting antibiotics (AGPs) have resulted in the ban of AGPs in several geographies, pushing nutritionist to look for new potential technologies to improve animal health and nutrient absorption. Thus, current research is focused on alternatives to antibiotics for sustainable food animal production. Various technologies have been evaluated, with different molecules and more or less advance release technologies. A double-encapsulation technology for sequenced release of active ingredients Various types of feed additives have been evaluated, for their effect on gut health, such as phytogenics, organic acids, pre/ pro/post-biotics, …. These solutions have generally some positive effects on gut health as they can exhibit positive impact on microflora, immunity, gut integrity, … In the meantime, the form of these products can vary a lot, from simple powders or mixes, to more sophisticated formulations. Some molecules may not require any kind of protection while others might be degraded before they even reach their target in the gut of animals. The variability in product forms and uncontrolled release then results in poor or inconsistent results or eventually higher dose and costs for producers. As a
Dr. Stephanie Ladirat
matter of fact, scientists need to work on new active molecules but also new technologies that guarantee the accurate and exact release in the animals. Recently, a biotech company developed a new technology, based on an exclusive formulation and a new double encapsulation approach (NUQO). With expertise in micro-encapsulation technologies and also the right facilities and infrastructures to prototype, scale up and produce such solutions, the company worked on one advanced concept: This new approach relies on one exclusive and original formulation with, on one hand a combination of phytogenics and phycogenics (active molecules from plants and algae) with proven effect on digestibility and immunity, and on the other hand a core of organic acids, with proven stabilizing effects on gut microflora. Furthermore, the new product relies on a double encapsulation to enable, not just a slow release, but an accurate and precise controlled
May-June 2022
Feed Solutions released of ingredients in the gut health. Thanks to this double-encapsulation, active compounds are released specifically between the duodenum up to the colon, with fractionated or sequenced release of the different ingredients, so that every compound gets released on spot to enhance digestive functions and control gut microflora. Maintain and support performance in ‘the real life’ This technology is designed to not only boost performance in standard conditions but also to secure performance in challenged conditions for monogastrics. Indeed, based on this exclusive formulation and double-encapsulation technology, this new concept is designed to address 3 main objectives: • Support digestive functions (digestion & absorption) • Trigger antioxidant effect and immune modulation • Ensure pathogen control (Clostridium, E.coli, Salmonella) Numerous field trials have proven and quantified the positive effects of this new technology on poultry performance and profitability in modern poultry meat production. Several trials, in Asia, Europe and North America, have showed a significant increase of performance. In some recent trials performed in Europe, it has been tested at 400 g/ton of feed in broilers. The technology triggered a better growth due to better intestinal health (BWG +3.8 %in average), a better feed conversion ratio (FCR -3.1 % in average), but also less enteric problems, better control of Gram+ and Gram- bacteria (coli
May-June 2022
bacteriosis, clostridium, salmonella etc.). Additionally, the product increased drymatter content of feces resulting in dry litter, and consequently in lower occurrence of footpad dermatosis, and finally a reduction of ammonia. Prevent health challenges and ensure consistent performance This new technology is primarily designed as a tool for nutritionists to prevent the drop of performance in case of health challenges or adverse conditions. Indeed, various trials have shown how this double encapsulation technology could prevent performance decrease in case of challenge or lead to more consistent results over the time. It supports better growth and feed efficacy but also foremost a better health status of animals. As an example, two trials performed in North America highlighted the effect of the new technology to better support performance and improve gut health during a coccidiosis challenge, in comparison with classic solutions such as phytogenics. Despite different impacts of the Eimeria strains (E.acervulina, E.Maxima and E.tenella) on lesion scores between the two trials, a consistent efficacy of the technology was observed on growth, feed efficiency and lesion score. In both trials, the positive impact on lesion scores due to E.tenella was significant, indicating the direct consequences of the targeted release of the active ingredients along the gut. Of course, such solution does not represent a ‘silver bullet’ but should be part of a
holistic approach to reduce risk of health challenges and its detrimental effect on performance and profitability of animals. As such, this doubleencapsulation technology, based on a unique formulation of phytogenics, phycogenics and organic acids, offers an opportunity to support gut health of animals and trigger more consistent performance, especially in adverse conditions, thanks to its unique ‘sequenced release’ of ingredients in the intestinal tract.

Feed Safety
THE IMPORTANCE OF FEED SAFETY FOR SAFE FOOD
O
ver the last years, the feed sector started gaining the attention of the food sector regarding its role towards food safety. Even though we are talking about two sectors (feed and food) with similar characteristics and complexity, there is one big difference regarding who is the end user of the output of each sector. For the feed sector, the end user is the food-producing animal which, on its turn, will be the main input for the food sector. On the other hand, the end user for the food sector is the “human”. The quality and safety of feed for animals intended for human consumption will have a direct impact on the quality and safety of the food produced from these animals. Given the anticipated growth of the world’s population to around 9 billion people by 2050, and the associated higher demand for animal proteins, it is vital that the feed industry, as well as the wider agricultural chain, can meet this challenge in a sustainable and safe way. From a regulatory perspective, regulators over the last decade started to be more attentive to the feed hygiene requirements. In 2003, the Feed Hygiene Regulation – EC 183/2003 laying down requirements for feed hygiene – was introduced in Europe. The breakthrough of this regulation was that HACCP became a mandatory regulatory requirement for the feed sector. Following the implementation of the Feed Hygiene Regulation, a number of sector specific
44 Gulf Agriculture | www.gulfagriculture.com
schemes (deriving from different feed industry sectors) was developed with the view to support the feed industry in implementing this regulation. Gradually, other regions like Australia, Canada, and U.S.A. started developing further their regulatory requirements for the feed sector. Feed safety risks have changed as to their likelihood to happen, and a holistic approach regarding how to manage those risks is necessary. Given that the feed sector today is part of the global value chain, additional effort for the management of these feed safety risks is required. The implementation of a feed safety management system provides the necessary assurance that the associated feed safety risks will be managed properly. An example of a feed safety management scheme for the sector of Specialty Feed Ingredients can be found in the FAMI-QS Certification. Recent scandals in the worldwide food and feed sector have highlighted the need to strengthen fraud prevention measures across the entire supply chain. Not only is this necessary to protect the health of consumers, but corporations and regulators both know that trust is the foundation upon which efficient, functioning markets are built. In addition, there is public concern that the food or feed sector is being used for intentional acts that could harm an individual or the public for ideological or financial purposes.
Emmanouil Geneiatakis, FAMI-QS Secretary General
Third-Party Certification (TPC) and particular feed schemes are becoming an important feature of the global feed chain. Nowadays, Feed Business Operators’ operational activities take place in a rather complex legal and business environment. Today we have moved from local sourcing to global sourcing. This affects the level of controls which are required. Although TPC is voluntary, it is an important requirement for a Feed Business Operator to gain market access and to communicate all aspects related to the safety of the feed ingredient, in a uniform language. FAO defines the food chain approach as: “Recognition that the responsibility for the supply of food that is safe, healthy & nutritious is shared along the entire food chain – by all involved with production, processing, trade and consumption”.The same approach can also be applied to the feed chain. TPC eg FAMI-QS could be seen as a mechanism for the development of feed safety culture, minimising risks entering the feed/food chain, enforcing feed safety regulatory requirements and supporting global fair trade.
