UNEP chooses Empower as a partner of its 'District Energy in Cities' initiative The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has chosen Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (EMPOWER), the world's largest district cooling services provider, as a partner of its 'District Energy in Cities' initiative, based on a case study presented by the company in this field, at the International District Energy Association (IDEA) Annual Conference and Trade Show in Boston. The announcement came amidst Empower's active participation in the event, led by HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer of Empower. During the event, UNEP presented the 'District Energy in Cities' book, in which they selected Dubai as a "Business Model of District Cooling to Developing Cities" and Empower was named as a partner to contribute to District Energy in Cities initiative. Empower was earlier invited to discuss a work-plan that sets the roadmap for the initiative. The company contributed to three major areas: technical, capacity building and training, and communication and outreach. The initiative comes at a time where estimates shows that district cooling could effectively serve 30% of the region's cooling requirements by 2030, if implemented under the right conditions, and could also lead to a reduction in the GCC's power plant fuel consumption equivalent to 200,000 barrels of oil per day. According to Bin Shafar, the endorsement of Empower's business model is the result of strong participation of JULY AUGUST 2015
Empower in several global events, including UN Climate Summit held last September, International District Energy Association (IDEA) Conference 2014 held in Dubai, Vienna Energy Forum 2015 and the IDEA 2015 event. Bin Shafar added: “It is a matter of great pride to be chosen a partner by UNEP. This is a reflection of the strong international confidence that Empower has gained in record time. Moreover, the inclusion of
Empower in the 'District Energy in Cities' book as one of the world's best models in the district cooling industry will enable other cities to benefit from our experience. This is the fruit of our impactful participation in international events by highlighting our key achievements. It has been a highly rewarding experience to showcase our UAE success to the world, demonstrating the technological advancement, operational
BioConsortia Recruits Dr. Andrew Jacobs to lead R&D team in New Zealand BioConsortia, Inc., the innovative ag biotech company with the proprietary Advanced Microbial Selection (AMS) process for improving plant traits and increasing crop yields, has appointed Dr. Andrew Jacobs as Head of R&D for its operation in Auckland, New Zealand. He will report to Dr. Susan Turner, SVP R&D for BioConsortia. Jacobs joins BioConsortia with an extensive history of research management. Most recently he held the position of Manager of Corporate Projects at ITEK Ventures Pty Ltd, an independent technology commercialization company associated with the University of South Australia. In this role he was able to apply corporate research management experience towards the university start-ups being funded and commercialized by ITEK. During his tenure with ITEK, Jacobs was managing a collaboration between the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) and Dow AgroSciences. He had been a Research Fellow at ACPFG since 2003, and was concurrently an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Adelaide in Australia. His research has focused on abiotic stress tolerance in cereals, aligning well with the current targets for BioConsortia. Jacobs completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide with six months spent in Germany at The Max-Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research. His PhD work culminated in the isolation of a novel gene for the formation of callose, leading to publication of the research in The Plant Cell. Since then Jacobs has published a number of other papers in the field of plant molecular and microbial science, has been invited to speak at international conferences as an expert, and holds two patents for plant systems. “What motivated me to join the BioConsortia team was the elegance and uniqueness in the directed selection technology of the AMS process. The ability to rapidly evolve the microbiome through AMS allows for beneficial impact upon multiple traits across multiple species. I think that's pretty exciting. It really is a technology that will change the way we think about microbes in agriculture” Jacobs said.

Soil Scout selected as 2015 Red Herring Winner Soil Scout, provider of innovative ground measuring solutions for the agriculture, forest and environmental industries, has been selected as a winner of the 2015 Red Herring Europe award. Red Herring's Top 100 has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring's editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype, Salesforce.com, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work. “Selecting startups that show the most potential for disruption and growth is never easy,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “We looked at hundreds and hundreds of candidates from all across the continent, and after much thought and debate, narrowed the list down to the Top 100 Winners. Each year, the competition gets tougher but we believe Soil Scout demonstrates the vision, drive and innovation that define a Red Herring Top 100.” 'We are proud Red Herring recognized Soil Scout as one of the most promising young companies in Europe,' Jonathan Skelly, CEO, Soil Scout responded. “Our solution enables customers to easily monitor below-ground environmental conditions, and make informed decisions, regardless of time of year or weather conditions. In the Agricultural sector, we help our customers lower their irrigation water and power needs by as much as 20%. At the same time we can reduce fertilizer loss and potential water pollution from fertilizer run-off.”

efficiency and reliability of services that have made Empower such a distinguished name in this sector." The international cooperation as conceived by the initiative is to accelerate the adoption of district cooling systems because of energy efficiency and lower water consumption, especially through the model adopted by Empower in Dubai. "Our meeting with the initiative's team allowed us to discuss and adopt the work plan for a period extending until 2016, helping implement the highest standards of district cooling in pilot cities,” added Bin Shafar. District cooling yields positive results in terms of saving water and energy, particularly electricity. Modern techniques use non-potable water in district cooling technology, making it the best alternative to conventional cooling which requires a huge consumption of electricity that originally used oil and gas.
Use of alternative energy sources is nearby On 10 June 2015 Priva organised the seminar 'Alternative energy sources in horticulture' at the Priva Campus in De Lier. The speakers shared their knowledge and experience with the audience, mostly (international) growers, greenhouse constructors and consultants. Visitors were inspired by the large amount of possibilities of alternative energy sources. Meiny Prins opened the seminar with an inspiring speech about the Sustainable Urban Delta and the role for the international horticulture in the global food challenges. New
energy sources is an important subject in the sustainable urban delta. Prins put the subject of the seminar in a wider perspective. Senior researcher on the subjects' climate and energy, Feije de Zwart (Wageningen UR), finds specifically horticulture suitable for use of alternative energy, because of need of heat and CO2. The necessity of alternative energy is nearby, because fossil fuels will end and heat of the sun is for free. Also sustainability is important. More and more rest heat will be used in near future. Afterwards vegetable grower Kees Vahl shared his experiences in the geothermal project in the Koekoekspolder (The Netherlands) and his recently build nursery in Bralitz, East-Germany, which uses the warmth of the nearby situated carpentry. His biggest challenge in both projects was and is retired partners and finance. Vahl and his brothers had enough persistence to continue. They strongly believe in the technics and the awareness that use of fossil fuels will end. Another important motive is the large demand of local products in East-Germany. “First find a market, than realise a project” is his advice. Director of Installect, Gerrit Kamphuis, learned the visitor about possibilities of storage of heat and cold and drill methods. Dick van Giezen (Carrier) speeched about the innovative technology of heatpumps in which heat is being replaced. This month a new heatpump will be launched which can reach up to 80°C. spring and fall, alternately in the USA and Europe. They provide the industry with the opportunity to test their own ISOBUS product developments in combination with those from other manufacturers using the test protocol defined in the standards. Real-time adjustments are often made by the Plugfest participants to ensure compatibility, while other situations require more work back at the company to complete the necessary changes. Plugfest activities are used prior to submitting products to AEF ISOBUS Test Laboratories like NTTL for final certification and uploading to the Database. The US AEF Plugfest has been held in cooperation with the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab (NTTL), one of the five AEF ISOBUS Test Laboratories selected by the AEF so far. The event took place from May 12 to 14. The next AEF Plugfest is scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 01, 2015, in Wörth am Main, near Frankfurt, Germany, and will be hosted by the Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft (DLG).
Finnish growers meet the Flying Doctors On 21 April, sixty strawberry and raspberry growers from Finland attended an exciting workshop organized by Biobest. The workshop took place in the company of Jarvenkyla, Biobest's distributor in southern Finland. About sixty raspberry and strawberry growers attended the workshop. In the morning session, Dirk Aerts, area manager, and Sam Gui, sustainable crop management specialist at Biobest Belgium, made the participants
acquainted with the possible contribution of Biobest to their pollination efforts and fight against diseases. Central in the workshop was the control of grey mold. This harmful fungus, also called Botrytis, needs continuous care and labour. Hence chemical crop protection involves an important cost for the growers. Due to continuously lowering limits for residues, strawberry/raspberry growers are forced to look for other options. Sam and Dirk presented to the participants an innovative biological control method: the application of the biofungicide Prestop® Mix*, by the bumblebees of the Biobest's Flying Doctors® hive. “Our public was excited about our story of Prestop® Mix, how it is distributed to the flowers and how it's used in a preventative way,” says Dirk. The active substance of Prestop® Mix is a beneficial fungus, namely Gliocladium catenulatum J1446, that occupies the surface of the flower. When Botrytis tries to install itself later, there is no place or food left. Besides this preventive mechanism, Gliocladium also wraps itself around the first appearing pathogenic fungi and produces specific enzymes that will breakdown its cell-walls. Ultimately Gliocladium will destroy Botrytis. Since last year, Prestop® Mix is authorized for use with bumblebees in Finland. The technology consists of a bumblebee hive 'upgraded' with a patented dispenser system. Dirk: “When the bumblebees leave the hive through the dispenser, Prestop® Mix sticks to the hairs of their bodies and Prestop® Mix is taken straight to the flowers. Precision. JULY AUGUST 2015

IPM SHANGHAI REVIEW
CHINA'S HORTICULTURAL MARKET ON A GROWTH COURSE
H
ortiflorexpo IPM Shanghai ended with records: From April 22 to 24, 19,280 trade visitors came into the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. That corresponded to a visitor increase of two percent. The number of exhibitors and the area rose substantially: On 26,000 square metres (in 2013: 18,000 square metres), 612 exhibitors from 27 countries (in 2013: 413 exhibitors from 24 countries) presented their innovative products and services in the Plants, Technology, Floristry and Garden Features areas. "The figures speak for themselves: Hortiflorexpo IPM Shanghai was able to clearly consolidate its top position as the most important horticultural fair in China. The need for investment is enormous because of the high demand for flowers and plants. The fair has noticeably profited from this and, at the same

time, was able to provide new stimuli for the green sector," Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen, was pleased about the successful event. Political reform approaches are cranking up Chinese horticulture in addition. For example, the "Beautiful China“ project which was initiated by the Chinese government and is intended to improve the quality of the air and the environment was also one subject in the comprehensive lecture programme. The introduced topics included new concepts for roof greening. The seminar on landscape architecture staged by the Shanghai Society of Modern Landscape Architecture went down very well with the visitors. Here, attention focused not only on topical studies but also on trends in modern landscape design. Already on the day before the fair, Messe Essen organised inspection tours of a flower market, a young plant business and a garden centre
with international participation. The 56 participants came from Germany, India, Australia, Japan, Ecuador, China and Spain. The fair highlights once again included the florist shows. Floral designers from Germany, Japan and Taiwan showed the newest flower creations in exciting live demonstrations. In 2015, Ecuador participated in the fair with an official cooperative booth for the first time. France, the Netherlands, Taiwan and Korea provided additional national booths. On a booth promoted by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs, Germany showed products "Made in Germany". On the joint area, the master florist Stefan Prinz from Fachverband Deutscher Floristen e.V. Bundesverband ("Trade Association of German Florists Federal Association") presented his creative workpieces from the floristry shows. JULY AUGUST 2015
GREENHOUSE LIGHTING
PHILIPS INTRODUCES NEW GREENPOWER LED TOPLIGHT RANGE FOR GREENHOUSES
P
hilips Horticulture LED lighting, a leading innovator of lighting technologies to improve crop farming, introduces the new GreenPower LED toplighting range extension and a brand new design for the North American market at Cultivate' 15. GreenPower LED toplighting is now one-and-ahalf times more efficient converting electricity to light (up to 2.7 µ mol/Joule) than any HPS system on the market. LED toplighting produces significantly less radiation heat than conventional HPS lamps, so growers can adjust light and temperature more
independently. This allows the grower to grow better crops, faster, year-round and control the greenhouse climate more precisely. Udo van Slooten, General Manager of Philips Horticulture LED Solutions adds, “This is an important step in making LED lighting systems 100% suitable to grow crops ranging from high-wire crops and leafy greens to cut flowers, pot and bedding plants. We have seen incredible results also in propagation by significantly improving quality as well as faster rooting and more compact growth. Light is no longer the restricting factor in growing as now the plant can

receive the exact light level that it needs.” “We have designed our GreenPower LED toplighting product to meet the stringent requirements of Underwriters Laboratories and CSA, and have submitted them for certification with these authorities”, says Ron DeKok, Philips Horticulture LED North America Business Development Director. “Growers across the globe are increasingly turning to LED lighting systems to extend their growing season, improve plant quality, and reduce energy. The introduction of our new toplight range will pave the way for growers in the US and Canada to push their greenhouse operations to the next level with most innovative LED lighting technologies,” added DeKok. Proven results with LED toplighting Leo van der Harg BV in Vierpolders, the Netherlands, produces 5 million pot roses every year. They recently installed a hybrid lighting system with 1000 W HPS and LED toplighting to attain greater control over growing conditions and make production more cost-effective and sustainable. Manager Leo van der Harg says, “This combination makes it easier to control the growing conditions. Because LEDs hardly generate radiation heat, it is possible to control the temperature and lighting separately.” Walters Gardens in Zeeland, Michigan, USA, which ships JULY AUGUST 2015

more than 18 million perennial liners annually, has been comparing plant performance under the LED toplighting versus HPS fixtures. Troy Shumaker, Chief Financial Officer, Walters Gardens says, “With Philips LED fixtures we have experienced greatly reduced crop times with an increase in overall plant quality while using less energy.” Finishing times for dianthus and hibiscus were reduced by as much as 10-14 days. Other results included better survival percentage and consistent growth of plants throughout the plug tray, as well as faster and better rooting with compact plant growth for specific cultivars. High wire crops, such as cucumbers and tomatoes, can be produced year-round with 100 % LED lighting. The GreenQ/Improvement Center in the Netherlands is on track achieving a high yield of 95 kg/m2 with their Komeett tomato variety in last year's trials. The Warsaw University of Sciences (SGGW) in Poland compared crops grown under HPS versus 100% LED with the same light sums in mol/m2. This resulted in a 23% higher production of a winter cucumber crop grown under 100% LED lighting, and a 14% reduction in water usage per kilogram. In many regions, the maximum light levels that can be reached with HPS when growing lettuce for example, are limited by the number of lighting hours, because the plants need long nights to prevent tip burn. In our test at PSKW (Research Station for Vegetable Production) in Belgium we were able to get the same or better quality of JULY AUGUST 2015

crops (compact heads and no tip burn) compared to HPS. Red coloration of Oak leaf and Lollo Rosso was also greatly improved using LEDs. Light recipes benefit every plant and phase Since different crops require different light/temperature situations (alongside other climatic conditions) for optimal growth, Philips has also invented specific light recipes for specific crops to help growers further enhance their crop results. A recipe combines the following elements: light spectrum, intensity, illumination moment, uniformity, and positioning. Using a recipe, a grower can steer specific plant characteristics, from compactness, color intensity, and branch development to flowering and more to improve results. Philips light recipe knowledge has been developed over many years of cooperation with growers, university, and research sites to enhance growth.
KEY BENEFITS INCREASED YIELDS — GROWERS CAN NOW PROVIDE THEIR CROPS WITH THE OPTIMUM LIGHT LEVEL THEY NEED THANKS TO LOWER RADIATION HEAT IMPROVED PLANT QUALITY — BY GIVING EACH PLANT THE RIGHT LIGHT SPECTRUM FOR OPTIMAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT REDUCED OPERATIONAL COSTS — UP TO 42% ENERGY SAVINGS COMPARED TO HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM (HPS) LIGHTING, LOW INSTALLATION COSTS AND MAINTENANCE COSTS

Campaign organizers, The Association of Fruit and Vegetable Distributors ‘Fruit Union’ and Polish Orchard Owners Association were encouraging all people visiting the stands to sample the European jewel – bicolored apples. Each year, the United Arab Emirates import around 100,000-170,000 tons of apples from all over the world. Imported cultivars are mainly monocolored (mostly red) and distinctively sweet-tasting. The 3-year promotional campaign is aimed at helping to broaden these preferences, alluring the Arab customers to fruit of different colours and flavours. The choice of occasion for the launch was not random, as that international trade show
Information about the unique qualities of apples from Europe has also been spread by means of mass media. So far, features related to the campaign appeared in titles such as: Emirates Week, IQTISADI, Gulf News, as well as on Zawya. There have also been numerous mentions of the campaign across the Internet and in European press. Campaign coordinators are now focused on developing the positive attitudes in their crucial target group, namely – the UAE consumers. The latter half of the year 2015 is still ahead of us and there are numerous tasks scheduled for the months to come. Will the organizers successfully persuade the Arab consumer to appreciate the diversified flavours of European apples?

PUMPS
MOUVEX® SEAL-LESS ECCENTRIC DISC PUMPS FOR FULL CHEMICAL CONTAINMENT APPLICATIONS
M
ouvex®, part of PSG®, a Dover company and a leading manufacturer of positive displacement pumps, is pleased to announce that it offers a complete portfolio of seal-less Eccentric Disc pump models that have been designed to provide premium performance and the ultimate in containment and safety in chemical-processing applications. Crucial pieces of equipment utilized during the manufacture and handling of dangerous chemicals are the pumps that either introduce raw materials into the production process or transfer end products for packaging, storage or shipping to end users. Mechanically sealed pumps are commonly used for these transfer activities, but seal-less pump technologies can often be the
more effective choice when full containment of dangerous and valuable chemicals is an absolute must. Mouvex seal-less eccentric disc pumps, including its Micro C Series, SLC Series and C Series, feature no mechanical seals, packing, couplings or magnets, with the shaft sealed instead by a unique double stainless-steel bellows. This unique design ensures durability, safety and product containment while delivering very high suction and discharge
pressures. Mouvex pumps also offer self-priming, dryrun and low-shear operation, the ability to pump both low- and highviscosity liquids and cleanin-place/sanitize-in-place (CIP/SIP) capability. Mouvex seal-less pumps are also ATEX and TA Luft certified. In addition, Mouvex sealless pump models feature a unique eccentric disc operating principle that allows them to pump air, thereby enabling them to achieve product-recovery rates of up to 90% or more on the suction side and 60% to 80% on the discharge side of transfer lines. This ability can result in thousands of Euros in cost savings annually from the recovery of still usable raw materials and saleable end products.
