UAE fertilizer industry grows by 51% in the last decade, says GPCA At 5 million tons, the UAE's fertilizer market has grown by more than 50% in the last ten years, according to the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA). “Despite the cyclical nature of commodity products and economic challenges, the fertilizer industry in the United Arab Emirates has seen impressive growth in the last decade,” said Dr. Abdulwahab Al- Sadoun, Secretary General, GPCA. “The sector's stable growth capacity, steady sales and rising employment not only makes valuable contributions to the Emirati economy, but also ticks several boxes in the country's Vision 2021 plans.” The UAE accounts for the third largest share of fertilizer production in the GCC, according to the

GPCA's Fertilizers Indicators report. Fertilizers producers manufactured 5 million tons of products in 2014, up from 3.2 million tons in 2004. Meanwhile, fertilizer capacity in the Arabian Gulf grew to 40.8 million tons in 2014, a 3.8% increase from the previous year, earning revenues of US$6.5 billion, according to the report. An export- oriented industry, the UAE's fertilizer industry also earned sizable revenues in 2014. “As more than half of fertilizers produced in the UAE is exported to diverse markets around the world, manufacturers of this commodity also earned US$653 million in revenues,” continued Dr. Al- Sadoun. Looking ahead, the GCC's fertilizer manufacturers can look into diversifying their product portfolio to include specialty fertilizers, advises the GPCA. To date, only 396,000 tons of speciality fertilizers are currently produced in the GCC, notably from UAE- based companies like ADFERT and RNZ Group. “Specialty fertilizers have unique qualities that define them against urea have innovative characteristics that yield a higher return in the global marketplace and therefore result in greater returns for the producer and the good news is that the UAE has already demonstrated that it can manufacture this valuable product.” The topic of innovation will be a key focus at the upcoming GPCA Fertilizer Convention. Held of the theme of “Innovating for growth: Ensuring an efficient, sustainable future”, the conference will shed light on how the GCC's fertilizer industry can contribute to global food security while embracing an environmentally sustainable future.

UAE Ministry of Environment and Water organizes seminar on 'Organic Agriculture' The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water recently organized a public awareness workshop on 'Organic Agriculture' in cooperation with Dubai-based Children's City. The workshop targeted children aged between 7 and 12 years to raise awareness about different environmental areas, especially organic agriculture. According to Eng. Aisha Mohamed Al Abdooli, Director of Education and Awareness Department, Ministry of Environment and Water, the Ministry is working within the framework of the National Environmental Education and Awareness Strategy 2015-2021 launched during the 18th National Environment Day. She stated that hosting the workshop in collaboration with the Children's City complements the first goal of 4

the Strategy to educate Emirati youth about a sustainable future. One of the main elements of the UAE's environmental conservation policies is to raise awareness among new generations to help modify human behavior towards natural resources. Eng. Aisha said that the workshop on 'Organic Agriculture' is considered a motivational step towards environmental conservation as it educates children on the importance of adopting the organic agriculture system and its contributions in protecting natural resources. She added that the simplified explanation of the mechanism of this system will help children to learn more about the styles and techniques that can be used to preserve the environment. During the workshop, a simple and enjoyable explanation was provided about organic agriculture, showing that this kind of production does not use chemical materials such as fertilizers, manures, pesticides, growth regulators, hormones, preservatives, and animal feed. It relies solely on the use of natural means of production such as the agricultural cycle of crops and natural fertilizers produced from plant residues and animal manure to improve the soil. The National Environmental Education and Awareness Strategy is based on six key objectives that were developed according to international standards and the expectations of the parties concerned. It is aimed at educating the youth of the UAE towards a sustainable future and strengthening the community's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. In 6

New Anchor Package Allows Center Pivots to Irrigate More Land In today's market, it is more important than ever for growers to make the most of all their cropland to get the highest possible yield. For many growers, this means irrigating land that may be difficult to reach with traditional center pivots. Valmont® Irrigation, the manufacturer of the Valley® brand of irrigation equipment, is expanding its Bender product line with a new anchor package that extends the reach of irrigation machines even 8

further. Valley Bender products allow a center pivot to bend and wrap around in-field obstacles, irrigating the acres behind it. The new Bender Anchor allows growers to use Benders on longer machines and on rough or rolling terrain to irrigate even more hectares. Only Valmont Irrigation offers an anchor for its bending units because only Valley pivots have the strength to handle long Bender machines, said Valmont Irrigation Vice President of Global Marketing Matt Ondrejko. “Our studies found that growers can increase their profits just by irrigating more of the land they already have,” Ondrejko said. “The new Bender Anchor extends those irrigated hectares at a low perhectare cost, improving yield and profit.”

Amsterdam Declaration focuses on need for immediate action to safeguard soils Please take care of our planet. Cultivate it, pass it on responsibly, so we may do the same. Please look after our soil." This was urgent plea, on behalf of the Youth Food Movement and the world's children, of 20-year-old Nyakallo Makgoba at the closing ceremony of Celebrating Soil! Celebrating Life! in Amsterdam. Speaking at the UN-backed conference on the importance of living soil in securing food supplies, Nyakallo Makgoba and Joszi Smeets of the Youth Food Movement demanded that delegates, including ministers, royalty and business leaders, act now to stop to soil erosion and degradation. The appeal was met with a deeply felt moment of silence. Then, when eight-year old Meike from the Netherlands raised the Amsterdam Declaration above her head, and parted the crowds, leading the way out, the room burst into thunderous applause. The moment made clear what the event was really about, this encounter of spiritual leaders, NGO figureheads, business leaders and activists, including Vandana Shiva, the former Ministers for Agriculture SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015

of Germany and Bhutan, and top functionaries of the FAO. Organised as part of the Save Our Soils campaign and the 2015 International Year of Soils, the Celebrating Soil! Celebrating Life! congress took place in Amsterdam's Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) from 26-27 June. The event highlighted the fact soils are being lost at a rate of 24 billion tons per year, at an economic value of Euro1.5 trillion. These are no mere statistics delegates heard that without fertile soil, climate goals and food security are totally hopeless. While such facts and support by stars like Julia Roberts have given the campaign weight, in the end it was the face-to-face appeal by the next generation which made the biggest impact. As part of the Save Our Soils 'Amsterdam' Declaration, many of the VIP's and 200 campaign partners present at the Conference have contributed ideas and commitments, making a promise to younger generations to do everything in their power to save fertile soils. The Declaration makes a strong case for organic farming and other forms of conservation agriculture, stating that, “Policy makers, governments, the business world and civil society should recognise these forms of agriculture as a fundamental solution for biodiversity, the climate and food security.” One of the contributors, Renate Künast, former Minister of Agriculture in Germany, stated: “We will make soil a criterion in international law and global agendas.” The promise of the next generation was strengthened earlier that day, when a 12

remarkable group of VIP's carried out a guerrilla gardening action on the Amsterdam pavement in front of the congress premises. Among them were author and activist Vandana Shiva, Volkert Engelsman (CEO Nature & More), Chief Arvol Looking Horse (spiritual leader of the Sioux) and Joszi Smeets (the young director of the Youth Food Movement). Wielding spades, they ripped out slabs of the Amsterdam pavement in a symbolic gesture, exposing the barren sand beneath, before adding compost and planting organic seeds. Speaking during the action, Vandana Silva said: “Livings soils and living seeds are the foundation of our society.” Volkert Engelsman, the Dutch entrepreneur who started the Save Our Soils campaign in a joint effort with FAO and IFOAM, expressed gratefulness and hope for the future after the event: “Farmers who look after their soils are the true doctors of the future.”

Crop advice in lawns: control beetle larvae biologically with B-Green Beetle larvae are most likely to cause damage to your lawn between July and end September. B-Green, based on parasitic nematodes, provides you with an efficient, fast and, above all, 100% biological solution. The most commonly occurring beetle pest is the larvae of the garden chafer (Phyllopertha horticola). These larvae mainly appear from early July till the end of September. They can usually be found just underneath the turf, where they eat the roots. Parts of your lawn will die and become detach.

Fortunately, there is an effective biological solution against beetle larvae. B-Green, available at Biobest is based on the parasitic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora. “After application, these nematodes will look straight away for beetle larvae that are hiding in the root layer”, says Biobest advisor Nick Nagels. “They invade the larvae and multiply inside them. At the same time they release bacteria which live in symbiosis with the nematodes. This combination of these bacteria with the growing nematode population kills the beetle larvae.”

International potato growers are looking forward to Berlin The harvest for stock potatoes will begin in the next few weeks in Germany and DKHV President Thomas Herkenrath is looking forward to the new season with confidence. If the quality of the harvest is good, he expects to see an improvement in market development compared to last year when a record crop resulted in significant price pressures. Early potatoes were relatively scarce this year and stocks are depleted. At the same time, marketing challenges continue to play an important role and there is a demand for innovative ideas to counteract the decline in potato consumption. FRUIT LOGISTICA has become firmly established as a key trading platform and driving force behind the international potato industry something exhibitors have confirmed in post-trade fair surveys. Seafex 2015 nets worldclass line-up of fish producers and aquaculture centres With GCC demand for fresh fish products expected to grow approximately eight percent per annum up to 2030, an international selection of local, regional and global fish suppliers, producers and aquaculture centres are preparing to reel in regional buyers at SEAFEX 2015 - the region's biggest trade fair and sourcing platform for the international seafood industry, running October 27-29 at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

According to a report by the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), per capita fish consumption across the GCC is estimated at 10 kilogrammes per year. Courtesy of its high disposable income and strong, high-end year-round tourism, the UAE leads regional per capita consumption rankings at 24 kilogrammes per year - five kilogrammes higher than the global average. With the regional fish industry worth AED1 billion a year, increasing domestic fish production to reduce trade deficits remains a core focus for GCC governments. Heavy investment in pioneering fish farming initiatives has resulted in a regional fund being

established in 2014 to assist GCC countries' aquaculture projects, while the UAE is planning to set-up the Middle East's first sturgeon caviar and salmon farm in 2016. While boosting domestic fish production will help meet rising regional demand for fish, the reliance on imports will remain. Fish consumption in the UAE alone is predicted to cross the 900,000-tonne barrier by 2030 and the entire GCC fishing industry currently only produces 392,000 tonnes of fish per year. According to the Ministry of Economy, the UAE contributes 75,000 tonnes - or 19 percent - of the regional production total. “This year's largest-ever edition of SEAFEX will offer producers and buyers an unrivalled platform to source and explore new sales avenues, distribution channels, technology advances and regional expansion opportunities,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President, DWTC. “The global fish processing industry is at an interesting stage in its evolution. Regional governments have acknowledged that, on an international level, aquaculture farming centres are catching or have caught up with traditional capture fisheries. SEAFEX provides access to both sectors and unites more than 150 specialist exhibitors from across the global fish production industry with the right partners from leading regional hotels, restaurants, caterers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors and procurement officials from across the food processing sector.” In addition to new country pavilions from Morocco, 16

performance, pressure and accuracy (no slip). Abaque pumps are available in ductile iron and stainless steel construction, allowing higher discharge pressure up to 217 psi (15 bar). “As one of the world's largest trade shows dedicated to the chemical-processing industry, the ACHEMA Show was a perfect venue to debut new models of, as well as the new look for, the Abaque Series pumps,” said Christophe Jovani, PSG EMEA Marketing Communications Manager. “Achieving full containment of raw materials, many of which can be hazardous to people and the environment, is a key consideration for chemical

processors. Abaque pumps are the ideal technology to utilize when looking to optimize the safe and efficient handling and transfer of these dangerous chemical materials.” The Abaque Series' pumping action is achieved by compression of a circular loop of elastomeric hose with two diametrically opposed rotating shoes. This rotational motion forces the fluid in the hose to move ahead of each shoe. When each shoe reaches the end of the loop, the reinforced hose immediately returns to its original shape, ensuring suction and priming, creating a strong vacuum pulling more fluid inside. This results in a pump that features higher

performance, increased reliability and the ability to handle the toughest pumping challenges, including extremely abrasive and aggressive fluids.

LODDER OFFERS QUALITY ROOTSTOCKS

L

ODDER-ROOTSTOCKS was founded in 1958 as a nursery with a wide-rangeproduction of rootstocks for fruit-trees, roses and ornamentals. Until now the specialization came more and more only to ROOTSTOCKS FOR FRUIT-TREES. QUALITY-ROOTSTOCKS – MADE IN GERMANY - are becoming more and more interesting/popular and well known also outside of Germany. The root-system of German FRUIT-TREEROOTSTOCKS is different, means better branched, to that of other countries. That makes regrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier even under not optimal conditions. ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTS and NECTARINES are the range of our production by tissueculture/in-vitro, stool-beds, hardwood-cuttings and seedlings. For special needs also transplanted – to have an additional better rooting-system. Now LODDERROOTSTOCKS is in a better situation, since STEFFEN LODDER is managing the production; so ERHARD LODDER (managing director) can take even more attention to the over worldwide customers and their needs. Storage from end of October until May or later for the Southern hemisphere is no problem in special temperature-controlledfacilities!

SAUDI AGRICULTURE PREVIEW

SAUDI ARABIA EMERGES AS LEADING EXPORTER OF AGRICULTURE AND DAIRY PRODUCTS

T

he Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has witnessed remarkable agricultural development over the last three decades, successfully turning large areas of desert into agricultural fields. It is a major accomplishment for an arid country that receives the world's lowest rainfall of about four

24

GULF AGRICULTURE

inches a year. Currently, the KSA is a leading exporter of a variety of agricultural products including organice products and olives and oil as well as the dairy products, eggs, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and flowers to the markets around the world. Although the KSA has a huge desert land, it also boasts of the areas where the climate has favored agriculture. The country has taken great strides in developing its agricultural sector by implementing major irrigations projects and adding previously barren areas to its stock of cultivatable land. Today, agriculture makes a substantial contribution to the KSA's economy. It is worth mentioning that the city of Jouf is one of the cities that has been developed for its agricultural nature and has received special concern in planting olives as it has around 12,300,000 olive trees and the city of Jouf markets its production internally as well as internationally to some of the European and the Arab countires.

To reduce its dependence on the revenue earned from oil exports as the main source of income and to produce more food for its increasing population with a high standard of living, the KSA has been making intensive efforts, through its five-year development plans, to develop its agricultural sector. Cultivated land in the KSA has dramatically increased because of government encouragement and financial aids and the country is presently witnessing an unprecedented exploitation of its agricultural potential. The introduction of sophisticated technology and modern machinery and cultivation of new crops and different varieties have led to the establishment of the greenhouse industry and large agricultural projects. This has not only improved KSA's self-sufficiency but also the export of some products such as wheat, dates, watermelon, poultry, eggs and fresh milk. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015

SAUDI AGRICULTURE PREVIEW

SHOWCASES ITS DISTINCTIVE FEATURES FOR GREENHOUSES AND POULTRY IN SAUDI AGRO 2015 The exceptional Tabreed cooling cell pads provide greenhouse farmers and poultry producers with the best productivity and highest return on investment chieving the highest profitability for a project is the main goal for any producer or investor, but animal and agricultural producers face unique challenges including weather and climate conditions, particularly temperature and humidity, which are regarded to be the most challenging elements in the region. In every market across the region, high temperatures, extreme humidity and salinity greatly impact operational costs, production quality and quantity, according to a variety of economic measures and criteria. Given the scale of these challenges, a practical, economical and environmentally-friendly solution is needed to help greenhouse and poultry farmers mitigate the negative impacts of weather conditions on production. This solution should also help them achieve economic goals by allowing them to produce crops and poultry of the highest quality and largest quantity, which give them an added value and the opportunity to sell their superior production for the best possible prices compared to their competitors. Evaporative cooling cell pads proved to be the optimal solution, setting new standards for agricultural and animal production in desert areas with the toughest weather conditions. They have been shown to increase the biological performance of poultry and plants, resulting in increased productivity and profitability. Stemming from an ongoing commitment to address the unique challenges faced by animal and agricultural producers in the region, Wadi Group established Tabreed in 2006 to manufacture state-of-the-art cooling cell pads using evaporative cooling technology. In a record time, Tabreed became one of the most significant players in manufacturing and exporting cooling cell pads to the Middle East and Central Europe. Tabreed cell pads offer an exceptional cooling and ventilation system that combines four unique features to deliver optimal production and profitability. These

A

26

features comprise of the quality of manufacturing raw material, ultimate performance in reducing temperature inside poultry wards and greenhouses to achieve the best possible productivity, competitive price and convenient operational cost to achieve the highest return on investment. The advanced manufacturing technique combined with the outstanding European craft paper and know-how give Tabreed cooling cell pads exceptional wetting properties and increase their ability to absorb and release water. Many European and Chinese cooling pads may possess one or two of these features, but Tabreed cooling cell pads have a clear competitive advantage in any market. In terms of quality, Tabreed evaporative cooling cell pads consist of corrugated sheets of cellulose paper gathered in an opposite sequence with a bee-hive structure allowing air to flow smoothly through the cell pads. Made of high-quality European craft paper, Tabreed cell pads are coated with bitumen polishing, a colorless and odorless substance, which prevents disintegration of cell pads and enables farmers to wash off the salt and minerals that accumulate overtime on the pads. The bitumen polishing further prolongs the lifespan of the pads and hence makes them more durable. These unique features make Tabreed cooling cell pads best positioned to operate in the Gulf countries, where excessive amount of solid substances and salts in water are rampant. The most significant feature of Tabreed cooling cell pads is the unparalleled capability to withstand even the harshest climate conditions, while reducing the internal temperatures by up to 15 degrees in greenhouses and up to 20 degrees in poultry wards in the most efficient, costeffective and environment-friendly manner. Cooling cell pads use an evaporative cooling technique that self-adjusts to the environmental conditions of poultry wards to best suit the flocks by maintaining an ideal temperature of 20-26 degrees, which provides optimum growth rate at a

practical production cost. The balanced air distribution inside the wards leads to the homogeneous growth of poultry flocks. Tabreed's cooling efficiency will also decrease the heat stress on birds allowing the feed conversion rate (FCR) to decrease, while increasing the meat yield reflected in the breast of the bird. Over time, the cells' performance will increase hen house capacity by 25% in each poultry ward, meaning that a ward with 10,000 hens will be able to host 12,500 hens, thanks to Tabreed cooling cell pads. As for greenhouses, Tabreed cell pads have been proven to help farmers double their annual profits due to their ability to regulate the annual production cycle of various crops and provide ideal conditions for select crops outside their planting season, which doubles crop quantities available for sale throughout the year. Tabreed cell pads also maintain smooth air flow throughout the greenhouse, which leads to the homogeneous growth of crops and enables farmers to increase the production capacity of greenhouses by approximately 40%, while maintaining high quality crop yield. The cell pads further provide optimal humidity levels, which increases soil fertility and curbs the formation of harmful bacteria. This in return, contributes to the fertilization process, enriches the soil and increases the volume of high-quality crops. Last but not least, Tabreed cell pads renew the air and oxygen levels inside the greenhouse, which enhances the photosynthesis process and boosts quality and productivity of crops. Tabreed cooling cell pads combine Chinese cost-efficiency with European durability rendering themselves as the most viable solution for heat reduction in local and international markets. Tabreed offers evaporative cooling cell pads to poultry producers and greenhouse farmers at a competitive price. They have been proven to be efficient, reliable and durable, offering optimal performance in the toughest weather conditions, ideally suited for Gulf countries.

In this way, Humintech has the possibility to optimize its logistics and supply its products faster to the customers worldwide. The new high technology production line enables Humintech to increase the production capacity to about 50,000 t/year humic acids based products in granular form (Perlhumus速), 10,000 t/year humic acids based products in water soluble form (Powhumus速) and 30,000 cbm/year of humic acids based products in liquid form (Liqhumus速). The new production line will enable the Humintech team to maintain and increase the quality of its humic acids based products and to manufacture several new products based on humic acids

in combination with other organic fertilizers and biostimulants. Beside the current product line the company will update its new product range to more than 50 different humic acids and organic matter based products within the next two years, which will contribute to increase the quantity and quality of plant production. HUMIC ACID

Humintech produces a large quantity of granulate humic acid as Perlhumus, water soluble humic acid as Powhumus and liquid humic acid as Liqhumus and 6% Fehumate as Humiron. Humitech started the production of humic acid with various microorganisms as antagonist of several soils born disease. BioHealth is one successful antagonist to soil born fungi. BioHealth® TH/BS WSG DESCRIPTION BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is a blend of selected Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis strains, humic acids and seaweed extract. Trichoderma harzianum and Bacillus subtilis are antagonist to soil borne pathogens like e.g. Phythium, Phytophthora, Rhizoctonia or Fusarium, whose hyphens and organs can be disposed by Trichoderma's comprehensive enzyme tools. Thus Trichoderma suppresses the spreading of these pathogens. Bacillus subtilis have evolved numerous mechanisms for both attack of other fungi or bacteria and for enhancing plant and root growth. During a culture Bacillus subtilis nourishes on the root exudates in the rhizosphere and thus builds a biological protective barrier against soil borne pathogens. In latent affected plant material BioHealth® TH/BS WSG remains ineffective, due to the reason that the antagonist cannot follow the parasite into the inside of the plant. Therefore BioHealth® TH/BS WSG has to be regarded as a soil conditioner or rather a plant intensifier and under no circumstances as a fungicide against soil pathological fungi. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015

ORIGIN BioHealth® TH/BS WSG is obtained through alkaline extraction from German Leonardite (highly oxidized lignite), high quality isolated

and selected Trichoderma harzanium fungus, high quality isolated and selected Bacillus subtilis strains and extracted from Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed.

CONTROL OF THE RED PALM WEEVIL SOSPALM PROTOCOL: A VERY EFFECTIVE SYSTEM TO CONTROL THE RED PALM WEEVIL LEAVING NO PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN POLLEN OR DATES IN DATE PALM TREES. José M. Llorens Climent. Dr. Agricultural Engineer, Section Chief of the Medical Service and Plant Certification of the Conselleria de Presidencia y Agricultura, pesca, alimentación y agua of the Generalitat Valenciana and Director of Professorship of the Palmeral of Elche of the University Miguel Hernández of Elche (Alicante).

F

rom among the different systems of application of pesticides by Endotherapy, the city of Alicante (Spain) adopted the SOSPALM system in 2010 to combat the red palm weevil in about 5000 palms in the municipal parks of the municipality. To try to answer any questions presented by the SOSPALM system, several trials have been designed by the professorship since early 2011. The first question was: Is SOSPALM an effective system? To answer this question, in early May 2011 Canariensis palms with a stem of less than one metre were used, in pots with drip irrigation and covered with nets, into which the same number of adults, male and female, were introduced. The same insecticide was injected through SOSPALM pegs at monthly intervals. The result was that six months later, all the treated palm were healthy while all the untreated examples were dead. The second question was: Do all insecticides behave in the same way when applied with the SOSPALM system? To answer this question, in June 2011 a trial was devised in which various palms previously fitted with the SOSPALM peg, covered with nets and with the same number of adult male and female red palm weevil introduced, were injected with ten different insecticides via SOSPALM pegs. Six months later, all the palm trees treated with the most effective insecticides remained healthy while the palm trees treated with less effective products had died.

38

GULF AGRICULTURE

The third question was: What is the persistence of the effective insecticides under conditions of high pest pressure? In two trials similar to the above, the most effective insecticides were applied at a frequency of 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days. These trials also served to establish the curative effects of the tested insecticides. Six months later, of the palms treated every 45 days one died and of the palms treated every 90 days, two died, while those injected every 15 to 30 days were healed. In turn, various dilutents were tested, from which SOSPALM LIQUIDO was obtained, in order to improve the behavior of the pesticides. This trial was repeated on a larger scale in April 2012 with Phoenix Canariensis palms of more than two metres in height. The fourth question was: How does the palm tree react to the introduction of the SOSPALM peg? In 2011, seven months after the first trial, the palm trees where the SOSPALM pegs had been installed were opened and inspected, whereby it was verified that the surrounding tissue only showed slight damage caused by the drill bit when drilling the perforation whereas the rest of the tissue remained healthy. Since 2012, whenever a palm tree in the

municipal gardens of Alicante that has been fitted with a SOSPALM peg falls due to a structural fault, the opportunity is taken to section and inspect the effect of the peg on the inside. Now, four years later, it can be proved that when the system is installed correctly no lesions appear inside the palm, with the peg remaining functional and able to continue with the treatments. The fifth question was: Is the behavior of the insecticides applied by Endotherapy in date palms between 5 and 13 meters high similar? Two trials of monthly applications were carried out beginning in August 2012. In this case, the trial were designed in a different way. Four months after the implementation of the SOSPALM protocol, samples of the apical meristem were collected and brought to the Regional Agricultural Laboratory of Valencia to test for pesticide residues. It was found that the insecticides applied were present at the apical meristem. Similar tests were conducted in 2014 with the same results and repeated in 2015.

Effect of the peg. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015

The sixth question was: Do SOSPALM pegs keep the same effectiveness with the passage of time? To this end, in June 2014, a trial was performed in Canariensis and dactilyferas palms between five and eleven meters high, in a park in Alicante, where the pegs had been installed GULF AGRICULTURE

The samples were analyzed in the same laboratory and it was determined that the insecticide applied was present in the meristem, meaning that after four years the SOSPALM pegs maintain their effectiveness. Two more trials were conducted in commercial fields of tall date palms, in the town of Elche, with SOSPALM pegs which had been installed two years earlier. A third trial was made with Phoenix Canariensis palms with SOSPALM pegs which had been installed three years before and after more than a year without applying any product. In both trials the insecticide was found in the meristem. Similar trials have been done in 2015. The seventh question was: Do pesticide residues appear in dates when implementing the SOSPALM protocol? To this end, two trials were designed in commercial production fields of Metjoul and Confitera varieties of dates. Monthly applications of insecticide were made since June 2014. The SOSPALM protocol was applied and when the dates were ready to harvest they were taken to the same laboratory for residue determination. It was found that there was no presence of insecticides in the dates analyzed. This test was repeated in 2015. The eighth question was: Do pesticide residues appear in palms flowers when implementing the SOSPALM protocol? In May 2015, applying the same protocol, flower samples were taken and brought to the same laboratory. The result was that no pesticide residues were found in the pollen of flowers when applying the SOSPALM protocol. It is planned that this trial be repeated in 2016. Full details of the trials cited in this summary are posted on the website of the University Miguel Hernรกndez: http://palmeralelx.umh.es/trabajos-catedra2/lucha-activa-contra-el-picudo-iii-tratamientoscon-endoterapia/ For these reasons, THE SOSPALM PROTOCOL IS A VERY EFFECTIVE SYSTEM TO CONTROL RED PALM WEEVIL, LEAVING NO PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN POLLEN OR DATES IN DATE PALM TREES. optimal solution for hilly conditions and haying. TS6 Series models are available with a choice of front axles to match different tasks. The TS6.110 and TS6.120 can be specified with the optional 2WD heavy-duty axle for heavy loader work, or a Class 3 FWD axle for even more traction and pull. The TS6.125 and TS6.140 come with the heavy-duty axle as standard, and a heavy-duty Class 4 FWD axle is also available. Also, a 98-inch rear bar axle can be specified if row spacing flexibility is needed to prevent damage to the crop and to have the option of using dual rear wheels for better flotation to protect the soil. Comfort and simplicity come as standard TS6 Series tractors are designed for comfort, providing plenty of legroom and a smooth ride. The flat deck platform offers excellent all-round visibility and provides a wide workstation, a mechanical suspension seat with armrests and adjustable tilt steering wheel as standard. An optional deluxe rubber floor mat reduces noise and vibration, adding to the operator's comfort. All levers are located conveniently within easy reach. Servicing TS6 Series tractors is simple and quick. The flip-up, one-piece hood provides easy access to all service points. The big fuel tank - 150 litres on the fourcylinder models and 235 litres on the six-cylinder ones means that refuelling is kept to a minimum.

ALL THE WORKING POWER

T

he world of farming is changing rapidly. Still, there are things that will never change, like the importance of choosing farming equipment that works as hard as you, the whole day, every day. Since their first introduction in 1923, the Farmall tractors have been synonymous of versatile workhorses, built to deliver performance and rock-solid reliability under every working condition. This tradition now lives on in the Case IH Farmall JXM Series. With a perfect balance of robust design and rugged strength, these compact tractors offer the power and cost-effective performance needed by 21th century farming and are the ideal workmate for every farming task.

50

GULF AGRICULTURE

Strong at Heart The Farmall JXM Series is powered by the world renowned Iveco S8000 Series engines, which are available in two versions: 80 hp (59.7 kW) and 88 hp (65.7 kW). With this 4cylinder turbocharged powering, which is further enhanced by the intercooler in both models, the Farmall JXM tractors are tuned to deliver optimum and reliable performance, high torque and excellent productivity. The lower cooling requirements ensure high fuel efficiency and considerable savings. The no-rust 90 litre fuel tank gives more than enough fuel for long working days without any refueling need. These

results are maximized by the excellent torque characteristics with up to 340Nm of torque and an impressive 30% of torque backup. Running Smoothly in All Situations Not all farming tasks are alike. That is why the Farmall JXM Series offers a wide range of transmissions to suit perfectly any application. All standard 8x8 and 12x12 transmissions are synchromesh with mechanical or Power Shuttle,

OF A TRUE MULTI-TASKER which further increases the versatility of these tractors, enabling the operator to shift on the go, even at high speeds. The optional 20x20 creeper variant offers speeds as low as 280 meters per hour which are ideal for specific applications requiring high torque at extralow speeds, such as trenching, vegetable farming and mulching. The new dashmounted shuttle lever provides fast direction changes and effortless maneuvering, perfect for work in confined spaces and around the yard. The transmission clutches are built with high quality Organic or Cerametallic components in order to ensure maximum durability for extended operating life and superior heat dissipation even in the most arduous working conditions. The double clutches design optimizes the transmission system in order to deliver best-in-

class fuel and power efficiency and continuous implement operations. Well Equipped for Productivity The Farmall JXM tractors are such a valuable performers also for their great PTO power and high lifting capacity which allow them to work with a wide range of tools and implements. The new, independent PTO driveline is easy to operate and delivers a steady and efficient transfer of power. Besides the standard 540 rpm working speed, the Farmall JXM Series offers the economy 540E PTO

option, which is ideal for smaller implements, and the 1,000 rpm option that better suits those farming tasks requiring high-powered equipment, such as spraying and spreading jobs. Ground speed PTO is standard throughout the range while the reverse PTO is available as option. The 3 point hitch has a lift capacity of 2,000 kg while the optional assisted ram feature provides extra lifting power up to 2,500 kg for heavier implements. The JXM tractors benefit from a standard 54 lpm hydraulic pump flow, that

delivers full capacity regardless of the load on the steering circuit and ensures enough hydraulic flowing for bigger implements. The optional up to three remote valves are ideal for loader operations and to accommodate a wider range of attachments. The standard Lift-O-Matic rear linkage control is designed to make light work of heavy duty tasks. With the additional height limiter, it ensures accurate setting of the implement lift height which is very helpful in applications such as spraying, grass mowers or spreading. The Drop Rate Control valve safely keeps the implement in lock position during transport. The unique sensitivity valve adjusts the speed of the draft sensing according to the soil and the

implement and it is very much appreciated in traditional ploughing and cultivation. Designed for maximum strength and loading capacity, the single piece 4WD front axle maintains impressive traction over even the most demanding terrain. Designed With Operator Comfort in Mind The Farmall JXM Series is designed to provide the operator with a comfortable working environment during long working hours. All the essential controls are logically and ergonomically positioned within easy reach to make the time spent in the field not only comfortable but more productive as well. The dash mounted mechanical shuttle lever can be operated without

taking hands off the steering wheel and helps the operator to remain focused on the task. The gear and the range selection levers are located to either side of the operator's seat, while the independent PTO clutch lever is a great support in PTO applications. The standard power steering reduces operator fatigue and enhances manoeuvrability, even during heavy load operations. The large flat deck platform with suspended pedals is ergonomically designed for spacious leg room and easy access. The fully adjustable mechanicalsuspension seat offers increased comfort. The ROPS frame, with sun canopy, is available for maximum safety and protection in every circumstance.

NEW AVIARY SYSTEM FOR LAYERS

V

encomatic introduces its new aviary system for layers: the Bolegg Gallery. This multi-tier system combines user friendliness with an economic design. While birds can follow their natural behaviour resulting in optimal laying performance, it allows you to collect eggs in an efficient way, preserving the quality after lay. As it is getting more difficult to find skilled labour, the importance of an easy to manage system is growing. The Bolegg Gallery uses vertical space to increase the number of birds per m2 floor area. Its open structure simplifies inspection. The winchable back walls allow

nest inspection and the treeconcept offers a good overview and access to all levels. At the heart of the Bolegg Gallery you'll find the Vencomatic laying nest. This nest is based on Vencomatic innovations, such as the Vencomat, the tipping floor and the egg belt. The design of the Vencomat ensures minimum contact with the eggs. With the perfect angle of the nest eggs gently roll away directly after lay protecting them from damage by the birds. All 3 tiers of the Bolegg Gallery are equipped with egg belts, enabling automatic collection of all eggs. A tipping floor closing

mechanism prevents littering the nest at night and allows dirt and dust to fall off easily when closing the nest. The system offers an hygienic environment through the combination of the nest and the wiremesh floor. The design combined with easy operation makes managing aviary birds easier than you think. Vencomatic Group is known for its innovative and sustainable systems for the poultry industry. Combining three well-known brands Vencomatic, Agro Supply and Prinzen - Vencomatic Group offers a full range of innovative systems for all types of poultry farms worldwide. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2015
