Jain Irrigation announces investment in United States' largest micro irrigation dealers Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (“JISL”) thru its multi generation Wholly Owned Subsidiary in United States of America (“USA”) agreed to acquire 80% stake in 2 US entities. HIPPOLOGICA to be a public attraction at the International Green Week as of 2018 After celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary last December HIPPOLOGICA is due to strategically reposition itself. The capital's number one indoor equestrian event will now take place on the last four days of the International Green Week Berlin 2018 (19 - 28 Jan.). Thus, next year HIPPOLOGICA will run from 25 to 28 January 2018. The successful combination of a show, sports and shopping opportunities will remain a firm fixture on the calendar of equestrian events. Riders, fans of equestrianism and horse breeders from the local region will also be able to enjoy culinary delights and get all the information the Green Week has to offer. As in previous years, the focus of HIPPOLOGICA will be on the various tournaments taking place, which visitors to the busiest trade fair in Berlin (2017: approx. 400,000) will now also be able to attend. Once again, public attractions will include the fascinating HIPPOLOGICA MASTERS programme, featuring five individual disciplines, namely horse jumping, dressage, handicap dressage, vaulting and driving. The successful partnership between the organisers of HIPPOLOGICA and the BerlinBrandenburg Regional Equestrian Association (LPBB) is set to continue. As the world's leading exhibition for agriculture, the food industry and horticulture, in terms of topics the International Green Week Berlin is ideally suited to be the venue for HIPPOLOGICA. 'Equestrianism' perfectly complements the 'Experience Nature' segment at the Green Week, which also includes 'Hunting' and 'Fishing'. What is more, the Green Week will continue the decades-long tradition of an indoor riding tournament, which used to be held parallel with the trade fair in the Deutschlandhalle.

Hortiflorexpo IPM Shanghai 2017 Ends with Considerable Visitor Plus Chinese show that they have an ever greater propensity to consume flowers and plants. What had already been emerging long before the fair was confirmed in an impressive way from May 10 to 12, 2017: Hortiflorexpo IPM Shanghai was able to register not only increases in the number of exhibitors and the area but also a considerable plus with regard to the visitors. In total, 31,264
trade visitors (in 2015: 19,820) came into the Shanghai New International Expo Center - a rise by 57 percent. The Chinese horticultural market is booming. The home gardening trend has arrived in the middle class. "Just like our exhibitors and visitors, we are enthusiastic about this year's event. The figures speak for themselves. The standard of living of the Chinese population has altered enormously. More money is being spent on flowers and plants. the project. First project of its kind based on the
concept of "Resource to Root" Being the first of its kind in the country, the project will cover 25317 Acres of farm area spread over 51 villages in the rain-shadow region of Malavalli Taluk of Mandya District in Karnataka. Out of the total water availability of 2.29 TMC, the project will utilize only 1.97 TMC, still ensuring cultivation for both the Kharif and Rabi seasons, besides meeting the perennialcrop water needs in the project area, thereby not only ensuring water security but also doubling the farm income. The project involves lifting and conveying water from the river Cauvery all the way to the end user-farmer in a network of closed conveyance piping system, thereby saving water loss due to evaporation and percolation. The issue of land acquisitions for conveyance of water through canals is also avoided. The water use efficiency is further improved by utilising the water so brought, through Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems by means of a centralized wireless automation system. Water use efficiency, thus, under

farmers significantly raise their productivity. This will mean more Naira from the same land, inputs and effort. The benefits of this raised productivity will be enjoyed by all the stakeholders across the value chain in a sustainable way. This was part of the resolutions from a national stakeholder conference on cassava seed system organized by the project, “Building an Economically Sustainable Integrated Cassava Seed System” (BASICS) that were held at the Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
The meeting, which reflected on the experiences of BASICS in 2016 and refined the project plan for 2017 and beyond, brought together national and international researchers, academics, policymakers, the private sector, non-governmental organizations and farmers to a roundtable. Making the case for urgent need for all the stakeholders to work towards a sustainable seed system in Nigeria, Hemant Nitturkar, Project Director for BASICS, reminded the participants that Nigeria is the largest producer
this project will be as high as 85%. Major crops considered under this project would be vegetables, pulses, oilseed crops like groundnut, semi-arid crops like ragi and floriculture. The distribution network used in the project will be of HDPE pipes which have a life of more than 100 years. In order to optimize energy and recurrent costs, water conveyance is proposed through gravity in over 10127 Acres in the project. The project will also be using state-of-art agricultural technology by way of fully automated water delivery systems and fertigation to maximise crop productivity as well as avoiding chemical residues in soil, ensuring soil health security. The project also envisages filling up of 12 tanks in the command area for meeting water requirements of allied activities like domestic drinking water needs, water for cattle and such other purposes other than agriculture besides recharging ground water. The tanks are proposed to be filled up by conveying water through large diameter HDPE pipes. The project is expected to benefit

of cassava in the world with a production of about 54 million tons, but its yield per hectare of cassava roots is about 8 tons, less than half of the realizable yields of more than 20 tons per hectare. Researchers say one of the factors responsible for the low yield of cassava is the low adoption of clean and healthy seeds of improved varieties of cassava by farmers. “We have to start with the right planting material and nurture it with good agronomy and weed management practices. Each of these three components has the potential

Kärcher participates in Project Lebanon as real estate market strengthens Lebanon is set for an industrial growth in 2017, with a focus on the construction and real estate sectors. The economy is supporting a number of commercial and residential developments in the capital and other strategic locations, within the country. The 22nd edition of Project Lebanon, the premier construction exhibition for building material and equipment, held from 16-19 May 2017, at the Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure Centre, provided investors and companies an insight into Lebanon's construction industry. to raise the productivity of cassava by 30 percent. If we do not improve our practices in seed, weed and agronomy, we are incurring a lost opportunity of about 200 billion Naira annually from each of the three issues,” he explained. BASICS is commercially piloting two distinct pathways of seed delivery. In one, called Village Seed Entrepreneur (VSE) model, in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Benue and with National Roots Crop Research Institute (NRCRI), in Abia, Imo, Cross Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, the project is helping develop a network of 130 community
based seed enterprises. These VSEs will source certified stems of improved varieties of cassava from NRCRI and IITA to multiply and sell to the farmers in their vicinity. This way, the farmers will not have to go far to source quality stems for planting. In the second pilot called Processor Led Model (PLM), in partnership with Context Global Development, the project is working with large processors of cassava who will then make available quality stems to their outgrowers with a buy back arrangement for the roots produced. Slow and low multiplication ratio has been
a key constraint in cassava seed system. The project is piloting a new technology called Semi-Autotrophic Hydroponics (SAH) for vastly rapid seed multiplication. Once this technology from Argentina is adapted and perfected in Nigeria by the Project, it is expected to have a significant impact on the ability of early generation seed businesses to quickly bring suitable varieties within reach of farmers. The project is also working with National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) and Fera of UK to improve the quality certification system in Nigeria.

The tour was for reporting on the biennial event which this year marks its fifth edition on the heels of steady growth in the numbers of exhibiting companies and visitors. These travels ranged from stages in Bangalore, Pure, Ludhiana along with New Delhi with stops selected according to their importance in the agricultural sector where it was possible to meet with agricultural organizations, business people, Indian and international manufacturing industries and members of the media converging on the capital in December for the great exposition. The FederUnacoma director of the events office, Marco Acerbi, told the press conference, “The development of agriculture in India requires great investments in mechanization which must be adequate for the needs of the country as regards quantity as well as quality. An event like EIMA Agrimach is, in this direction, a fundamental point of reference. The FICCI Joint Director Jasmeet Singh declared, “The acquisition of agricultural machinery in India has shown impressive growth in these years and today this country is the world's leading market for tractors sold with a total of about 600,000 per year. DuPont Announces Agreement with FMC DuPont (NYSE: DD) announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with FMC Corporation (NYSE:
FMC) to divest a portion of DuPont's Crop Protection business, including certain research and development capabilities, and to acquire substantially all of FMC's Health & Nutrition business. The transaction includes consideration to DuPont of $1.6 billion to reflect the difference in the value of the assets, including cash of $1.2 billion and working capital of $425 million. The divestiture will satisfy DuPont's commitments to the European Commission in connection with its conditional regulatory clearance of the merger with Dow. “We believe this agreement is an excellent outcome that serves the best interests of all stakeholders, including our
shareholders, customers and employees,” said Edward D. Breen, chairman and chief executive officer of DuPont. “Our intended independent Agriculture company will continue to benefit from the combined, complementary strengths of DuPont and Dow, which will include greatly expanded offerings and a robust pipeline across seed germplasm, biotech traits, and crop protection to provide greater choice and innovation to growers around the world. The merger transaction is still expected to generate cost synergies of approximately $3 billion and growth synergies of $1 billion. AGRAME FACILITATES RAFT OF INTERNATIONAL JOINT-VENTURE ANNOUNCEMENTS

graME, the region's specialist agribusiness, aquaculture and veterinary trade event, concluded at the Dubai World Trade Centre and was once again lauded by its visitors, exhibitors and governmental support bodies. Over 300 agriculture, poultry, livestock, aquaculture, and veterinary businesses from across the world took place at the event this year. In a recent survey, 96 per cent of exhibitors stated that AgaME is beneficial

Initiatives and incentives are being established by the governments in different regions of MENA to harvest the potential of aquaculture. However, some of the challenges such as sustainability and volatility of the industry are yet to be overcome by the government. patterns. “As part of our efforts to enhance food security and diversity, we have taken a series of actions and measures, such as raising awareness among farm owners of the best methods and practices in agriculture, intensifying efforts to protect fish stocks and enhance the sustainability of the fisheries sector and its contribution to national food security, in addition to coordinating with local authorities and stakeholders to develop the National Animal Health Plan which aims to combat animal diseases and avoid its effects on the economy,” commented Al Habsi during his keynote session. Dr Roel Mulder, Secretary General for the World's Poultry Science Association, who spoke at the conference made sure to emphasise the importance of promoting biosecurity in poultry in the Middle East for the industry to thrive: “Better biosecurity provides peace of mind, a healthier flock and a more viable business. All poultry keepers need to be aware of the need for strict biosecurity and hygiene on their farms. The benefits: it helps to keep out exotic diseases such as Avian influenza and Newcastle disease, it reduces the risk of zoonotic diseases such as Salmonella. Biosecurity will improve overall flock health, reduce costs of disease treatment and reduce losses and improve profitability”. PRIVA BRINGS PROJECTBASED COLLABORATION TO YOUR SCREEN
I
n late 2015, Priva launched its video section entitled “The Grower Files”. In four short videos, notable growers from the Netherlands and abroad outline their vision regarding topical issues and issues of importance in greenhouse horticulture. Building on the success of those video reports, Priva is now launching a new series of videos entitled “Growing Together with...”. In this series, the emphasis will be on collaboration within the sector as the starting point when carrying out promising projects in greenhouse horticulture. The theme of the ongoing series called The Grower Files is: “From growers, for growers”. In this series, the key personalities are prominent entrepreneurs from a number of different sub-segments of the greenhouse horticulture sector. They provide viewers with an interesting insight into their vision and the philosophy of their businesses with regard to topics such as internationalization and water, climate and energy management. Judging by the many positive responses received from entrepreneurs who have viewed these short and informative videos, this approach has been successful. The old saying that “growers learn from growers” is still true to this day, even if the learning takes place using the very

latest media. The fourth episode of The Grower Files is scheduled to be released in the coming months. Collaboration is coming your screen The positive elements and the experiences gained while producing The Grower Files will also be incorporated in this new initiative: Growing Together with… In this new series, the entrepreneurs themselves will not be at center-stage. Instead, the focus will be on projects that are enabling the horticulture sector to progress to a whole new level. In the past few years, a variety of similar stories have already appeared on the Priva website, focusing on solutions that the company is providing in the areas of climate, water, energy or fertilization. But the message can be brought across is a faster, more active and up to date way. This new series of video reports will show the collaboration that takes place between various parties. Growing Together with… will tell the story of how (large) state-ofthe-art horticultural projects actually come about. A process that can take years will be summarized in a captivating and stimulating video lasting just a few minutes. The intention is to get growers to start thinking about “there is something in it for me”.

GEOTHERMALLY HEATED GREENHOUSE REALIZED IN NO TIME IN HUNGARY
W
hile in the Netherlands the first greenhouses are heated with geothermal energy, geothermal heating systems in Hungary have been used in greenhouses for many years. This Hungarian greenhouse construction project is an example of international cooperation, combining the knowledge of local Hungarian geothermal energy with the

latest Dutch greenhouse construction techniques. In no time Through this efficient cooperation the Dutch greenhouse builder has been able to realize a geothermal heated greenhouse of 8,000 m2 in Hungary in record time. "In the second week of December, construction began in extremely cold weather
conditions, sometimes with -20°C, and on February 10 the greenhouse was ready for the tomato cultivation. The first sustainable tomatoes have already harvested, "says Dylan Schalke van Debets Schalke. Increasing demand for greenhouses "We also see an increasing demand for greenhouses in Hungary. Due to low labor costs and cheap sustainable geothermal energy, the tomatoes of the Hungarian growers can be marketed at a relatively low cost. The client, the tomato company Agroszemek Kftd, expects to expand his greenhouses acreage in the upcoming years. "The next expansion of 16,500 m2 is currently under construction.", says Dylan Schalke. "Debets Schalke has been the "home supplier" of this leading Hungarian tomato grower. Hungary's largest tomato growers. The next expansion project of 16,500 m2 was launched in March and the first tomato plant was planted in May. To carry out the expansion orders enables us to think along with the customer and their growing ambitions. Sustainable tomato greenhouse With the two geothermal greenhouse construction expansion projects, the total
area of this grower is 80,000 m2, divided over 2 locations. Debets Schalke is responsible for the supply, delivery and construction of the greenhouses and its installations such as the screen installation, greenhouse heating and growing gutter installation. The tomatoes are grown for both the domestic and export markets. With the greenhouse expansions the grower expects to be able to serve multiple exporting countries. Philips Horticulture LED lighting is hosting the trips to the Kernoas greenhouse, with two seasons of experience growing with 100% LEDs, the Tomate Jouno greenhouse, specializing in year-round production of cherry tomatoes and Le Jardin de Rabelais, which grows vine and cherry tomatoes in its new Suprimair 3.4 ha greenhouse. “This year we are traveling to France, known for its refined cuisine. Over 90% of tomatoes produced in France are sold locally and there has been a strong move towards winter production to satisfy consumer demand,” says Udo van Slooten, manager of Philips Horticulture LED lighting. “This event presents a unique opportunity for the tomato community to gain new insights into how 100% LED installations can improve high wire tomato production from three leading innovators in one of Europe's biggest markets.” As the first large-scale French tomato grower to move to 100% LED, Guillaume Kerjean, co-owner of the Kernoas greenhouse, will share results from two seasons of growing the Plaisance cultivar on 1.7 ha with 105 µmol LED toplighting and a double row of 110 µmol LED interlighting. Kerjean says, “Our goal was to expand production of consistent, high quality

tomatoes exclusively in 2002 with HPS lights. To do this, it places young plants in between its generative crop twice a year, but the light required by the young plants is usually intercepted by the leaves of the generative plants. Jouno moved to LED interlighting and toplighting because it offered
an energy efficient and sustainable way to increase winter production, without compromising on taste. By placing LED between the young plants they get a good start. The result is a shorter inter-node distance (from leaf to leaf) which results in a stronger plant. GULF AGRICULTURE

umintech is one of the worldwide largest organic fertilizer and humic substance producers, based in Grevenbroich, Germany. Humintech used to produce its humic acids based products in three different areas and now it joined them in one area in Grevenbroich. In this way, Humintech has the possibility to optimize its logistics and supply its products faster to the customers worldwide. The new high technology production line enables Humintech to increase the production capacity to about 50,000 t/year humic acids based products in granular form (Perlhumus®), 10,000 t/year humic acids based products in water soluble form (Powhumus®) and 30,000 cbm/year of humic acids based products in liquid form (Liqhumus®). The new production line will enable the Humintech team to maintain and increase the quality of its humic acids based products and to
manufacture several new products based on humic acids in combination with other organic fertilizers and biostimulants. Beside the current product line the company will update its new product range to more than 50 different humic acids and organic matter based products, which will contribute to increase the quantity and quality of plant production. Humintech takes the best German oxidized Lignite resources' (Leonardite) with high humic /fulvic acids quantity and uses the high technical production methods to get the high humic acid quality. NEW OPTIONS FOR AVR CROP HANDLING, STORAGE EQUIPMENT

ollowing a first smooth crop handling & storage season, in which potato machine manufacturer AVR launched the new Falcon receiving hopper and the Cobra store loader, they explain a number of options for the crop handling & storage equipment in more detail. Useful Gadgets on the Falcon: Speed Clean Option The user can activate the Speed Clean option to clean the PU spiral roller set by setting them to the boost position. The extremely high rotation speed removes soil residue. A safety cover provides protection against any flying debris. This option can be activated at the push of a button or with an automatic timed setting or combined with an automatic stop function.

Adjustable Discharge Belt Narrowing Option The discharge belts on the Falcon are all 80 cm wide. If narrower conveyer belts (often 65 cm) are positioned behind the discharge belt, the filling hopper may be too narrow and cause spillage. By installing this simple slide system, the flow of product or soil can be narrowed down in order to prevent spillage. The slide is continuously adjustable and narrows the belt down to approx. max. 60 cm. The slide can easily be dismantled. Drive-in Lighting and Sliding Sensors for Tilt Detection Option The side panels can be fitted with LED lighting. This lighting not only makes the bunker more visible when driving into a barn
in the dark so that it is easier to drive in between the side panels, but it also switches off when the tilt unit has come far enough. The purpose of the design is to prevent damage by the driver. Depending on the length of the overhang of the tilt unit, the lighting sensor can be adjusted on the slide rail. Cobra Innovations: Feed Belt Option The additional feed belt between the duo belt and the store loader reduces the drop height (from every belt position) of the product flow, guaranteeing a soft landing for the potatoes. The product feed can be slowed down gradually from the duo belt towards the store loader in order to build up a thicker layer of product on the store loader belt. Slowing the product down prevents product damage. When the product arrives onto a full belt, it does not start to roll too fast. It immediately comes to a standstill, making it even more product-friendly. There is also the additional advantage that a full belt ensures an improved and more constant discharge when emptying the store loader. Additive spray equipment (powder/Mafex) can be used more efficiently by fitting it at the point of transition (improved product coverage), and is more accessible (e.g. for replenishing) compared to when this is fitted halfway up the rising conveyor belt. xpansion of marine aquaculture is widely predicted to fill the protein supply-demand gap as the global population approaches nine billion. Despite the vastness of the ocean, selection of optimal aquaculture sites requires application of modern tools and expert knowledge, particularly with regard to predicting, understanding and managing environmental impacts. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process therefore plays a key role in the sustainable expansion of aquaculture, and it is often a mandatory component of proposed larger-scale aquaculture developments. BMT Oceanica's Principal Marine Scientist, Dr. Glenn Shiell and BMT WBM's Technical and Innovation Manager, Dr. Michael Barry, describe a state-of-the-art EIA approach to assessing the potential impacts of sea cage operations in coastal environments. Drawing on recent work for the proposed aquaculture facility near Geraldton, Western Australia, both Shiell and Barry highlight the application of a novel recovery module, with the capability to predict seafloor recovery times during fallowing. As the world's population grows and wild capture fisheries decline, it is expected that aquaculture will expand rapidly to meet an expected global supply shortfall in seafood, and more generally, in protein stocks. 'Getting to Eden', a report by the global action network, Fishing for a Future (http://www.fishingfuture.org/ab out-us/), suggests the shortfall in

fish protein could reach 62 million tonnes annually by 2030 if not addressed via reduction of waste, improvement in fisheries management and the expansion of aquaculture. As reliance on aquaculture increases globally, so too does the requirement for modern tools and techniques to better predict and manage the associated environmental impacts. Indeed, as the scale and number of operations increases, so too does the complexity of the environmental impacts, and the level of scrutiny applied to them by regulators, the general public and even the aquaculture industry itself. Recent controversies in Tasmania and increasing public perceptions of the alleged link between aquaculture and visible environmental degradation have put a spotlight on these issues. It is very clear that development of aquaculture however important to food security - must be undertaken using the best possible tools for predicting both the instantaneous and cumulative effects of aquaculture, to provide confidence that the impacts are negligible, or if not small and entirely manageable. Despite recent advances in the development and use of numerical tools to assist with environmental impact assessment, the industry still falls somewhat short of being able to provide 'off the shelf' and fully integrated models capable of reliably determining the aerial extent of benthic and water column impacts and associated recovery rates during 36

fallowing. Having access to tools that can offer these insights is often of interest to government departments so that they can provide robust and defensible advice to key stakeholders (e.g. regulators and the general public) on environmental impacts. More practically, the application of such tools can help to minimize the risk of undue criticism, better inform public perceptions and improve confidence in the environmental approvals process, leading to better outcomes for the public and industry. In partnership with the University of Western Australia (UWA), BMT recently developed a novel and innovative suite of modelling tools to assist the Western Australian Department of Fisheries (DoF) in its assessment of a proposed aquaculture operation in the southern Abrolhos Islands, off the west coast of Australia (the Mid-West Aquaculture Development Zone, MWADZ). BMT and UWA took existing water column and benthic biogeochemical numerical tools and built extensions to allow for the numerical simulation of: the trajectory of released particulate waste and surplus feed and their final resting points on the seafloor; their subsequent saltation (if any) and lateral benthic migration; their eventual benthic accumulation; and then finally the remineralisation of accumulated particles and the associated sediment cleansing over subsequent multiannual periods. techniques are not new, however their linkage, dynamic application over multiannual periods and use to examine detailed sedimentology during fallowing is unique. Specifically, this approach allowed, for the first time in Australia, the robust investigation of predicted water column and benthic recovery times of different proposed cage configurations, and assessment of these against legislated acceptability criteria. Understanding these processes provided DoF with the opportunity to prepare a robust and scientifically defensible EIA for the MWADZ, to estimate the carrying capacity of the zone and provide advice on the

approach to operation management; all of which provided confidence to the regulator that the proposed development could be sustainably managed, without compromising the prescribed environmental values. BMT's knowledge of the regulatory criteria enabled the DoF to custom build an

An effective EIA is key to gaining approval for any proposed aquaculture development zones. Having an integrated team of experts who can deliver the specific requirements for the EIA and provide a practical understanding of the potential constraints faced by fish farmers has undoubtedly raised the bar and set the benchmark for a new best practice approach.
