Valmont® Irrigation Announces New VFlex Corner™ Valmont® Irrigation, the manufacturer of the Valley® brand of irrigation equipment, introduces a new corner option that is completely customizable to a grower’s field. The new Valley VFlex Corner™ is now the most versatile corner option in the industry. “The new Valley VFlex Corner has been in development since 2009 and was extensively tested at Valley and in customer fields,” said John Kastl,

Teamwork secures new overseas market for seed potatoes On-going communications with Vietnam officials by Potato Council and SASA, to discuss seed potato importation requirements, has resulted in the seal of approval for the official importation protocol between Vietnamese and GB authorities, allowing GB seed potatoes to be imported into Vietnam for the first time. Liaison with this new, FarEastern market has been ongoing for some time. Robert Burns, head of seed and export for Potato Council and Dr Triona Davey, Plant Health Liaison for SASA (Scottish Government) have been communicating with Vietnamese officials for many months, advising and informing on specific phytosanitary conditions and the production of seed from GB, and emphasizing the benefits that GB seed potatoes can offer the Vietnamese growers and supply chain. Mr Burns said “The outward mission by Potato Council and SASA to Hanoi earlier this year led to the finalization recently of the importation agreement between GB and Vietnam – which is now signed - and we are absolutely delighted that this important new market is
now accessible for GB’s seed growers and exporters.” Moreover, the Vietnamese officials are due to visit Potato Council and SASA in September to observe GB seed production at first hand, and will meet Potato Council and SASA plant health teams, visit micro-propagation laboratories and mini-tuber production facilities and view this season’s seed crops in-situ. Until recently, potatoes ranked below production of other Vietnamese staples such as rice, maize and sweet potato with an average yield of potato crops in Vietnam of around 12 tons/ha. Until now, a lack of quality seed is thought to have been one significant barrier to production efficiency and profitability in Vietnamese potato production.

nonprofit organization. CMC will also donate training and technical support. The tractor was handed over during a ceremony attended by H.E. (Mrs.) Janet K. Museveni First lady and Minister for Karamoja Affairs, top Government officials, New Holland Agriculture Africa Business Manager, Mr Marco Raimondo, the children of ‘Kids of Africa’, their caregivers and the organization’s staff, representatives of the local councils, as well as the national broadcast and print media. The donation follows from the previous gift of a 3030 NX tractor in August 2009, as part of New Holland’s and CMC’s Corporate Social Responsibility programs, which aim to support the country’s social and economic development. The 3030 NX tractor has enabled ‘Kids of Africa’ to establish mixed farming on its land, with intensive vegetable production. This has helped the children’s village, home to 93 children and 50 members of staff, to achieve a high degree of food self sufficiency. Since 2009 Kids of Africa have cleared and developed 10 acres within the village form organic vegetable farming,
relying on drip irrigation. They have also hired 15 acres from a local church organization, which have been dedicated to the production of beans, maize and sunflowers. They have done such an excellent job with the tractor that they have been ploughing and harrowing land for a growing number of neighboring farmers, providing assistance to the local community. The arrival of the new TT55 tractor will enable ‘Kids of Africa’ to significantly step up their farming activities. These general-purpose tractors are blessed with outstanding power and fuel efficiency. They are designed to meet the most varied needs, providing very easy access on and off the driving seat, and a comfortable workstation. Highly reliable, they are quick and easy to service, with the one-piece rear hinged hood that gives excellent access to all components from the ground. The new TT55 tractor will enable ‘Kids of Africa’ to farm the additional 2 acres they recently purchased and expand the 15 acres of land hired from the local church organization, as more than 50 acres of unfarmed land are available to ‘Kids of Africa’.
In addition, ‘Kids of Africa’ will be able to extend its support of local farmers, providing ploughing and land preparation work on a hire basis to the wider community around the village. This will make a huge difference to local production, as, before the arrival of New Holland’s tractors, local farmers only had hand hoes to prepare the soil and therefore tended to plant too little, too late, which resulted in a poor harvest. The children of ‘Kids of Africa’ are growing up with first-hand knowledge of sustainable, mechanized farming practices. They are learning how they achieve good yields while preserving the quality of the soil by preparing the land for planting with proper ploughing and harrowing followed with mixing into the soil of biological materials such as compost and manure from the village’s animal production. Sound farming practices for a sustainable future of Uganda’s agriculture. Cooper Motor Corporation Ltd (CMC) is the official distributor of New Holland Agriculture in Uganda, selling and supporting its agricultural equipment throughout the territory.

Highly hazardous pesticides should be phased out in developing countries The tragic incident in Bihar, India, where 23 school children died after eating a school meal contaminated with monocrotophos, is an important reminder to speed up the withdrawal of highly hazardous pesticides from markets in

use of such highly toxic products very often poses a serious risk to human health and the environment. The incident in Bihar underscores that secure storage of pesticide products and safe disposal of empty pesticide containers are risk reduction measures which are just as crucial as more prominent fieldoriented steps like wearing proper protective masks and clothing. The entire distribution and disposal cycle for highly hazardous pesticides carries significant risks. Safeguards are difficult to ensure in many countries. Among international organizations, including FAO, the World Health Organization and the World Bank, there is consensus that highly hazardous products should not be available to small scale farmers who lack knowledge and the proper sprayers, protective gear and storage facilities to manage such products appropriately. FAO therefore recommends that governments in developing countries should speed up the withdrawal of highly hazardous pesticides from their markets. Non-chemical and less toxic alternatives are available, and in many cases Integrated Pest Management can provide adequate pest management that is more sustainable and reduces the use of pesticides. The International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management, adopted by FAO member countries, establishes voluntary standards of conduct for all public and private entities involved in pesticide management. This Code has been broadly accepted as the main reference for responsible pesticide management. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013

GERMAN UPDATE
LODDER OFFERS QUALITY ROOTSTOCKS
L
ODDER-ROOTSTOCKS was founded in 1958 as a nursery with a wide-rangeproduction of rootstocks for fruit-trees, roses and ornamentals. Until now the specialization came more and more only to ROOTSTOCKS FOR FRUIT-TREES. QUALITY-ROOTSTOCKS – MADE IN GERMANY - are becoming more and more interesting/popular and well known also outside of Germany. The root-system of German FRUIT-TREEROOTSTOCKS is different, means better branched, to that of other countries. That makes regrowth in the fruit-tree-nursery easier even under not optimal conditions. ROOTSTOCKS for APPLES, PEARS, PLUMS, CHERRIES, PEACHES, APRICOTS and NECTARINES are the range of our production by tissueculture/in-vitro, stool-beds, hardwood-cuttings and seedlings. For special needs also transplanted – to have an additional better rooting-system. Now LODDERROOTSTOCKS is in a better situation, since STEFFEN LODDER is managing the production; so ERHARD LODDER (managing director) can take even more attention to the over worldwide customers and their needs. Storage from end of October until May or later for the Southern hemisphere is no problem in special temperature-controlledfacilities! SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013
The most important variety is during the last 25 years the Prunus GiSelA®-ROOTSTOCKseries – for half-size trees, early cropping, large fruit-size and good productivity.

AstraNova A Success Story with Accelerated Growth
A
straNova Tarim is a fast growing agrochemical company that has shown a rapid expansion with an accelerated growth during the past few years. Astra's manufacturing mission is to produce elite quality at modest value that is available and affordable to our consumers. Every year, Astra devotes large sums in R&D, where it aims to produce originator quality. This includes hiring highly qualified and well-experienced staff from multinational companies and associations to perfect mixes. Being the pioneer to enter in the area of agrochemical technical materials synthesis in Turkey and Middle East, AstraNova has explored the industry and proven professional

its capabilities by the commercial synthesis of Glyphosate technical material in 2008 just two years after being established. In 2011 AstraNova has constructed a new state of the art factory at Organized Industrial Site in Nigde-Bor, for the synthesis of Glyphosate technical material and the production of both classical formulations EC, SL, ULV, WP and new technology formulations such as SC, SP, WG and others. This rapid growth and accelerated expansion of AstraNova came as a natural outcome of the new management after being acquired by ASTRACHEM in 2010. Indeed, ASTRACHEM is a member of the giant Saudi industrial group “ASTRA Industries that is listed
in Saudi stock market, and is a leading Agrochemical company in Middle East and North Africa. Whereas, the integration of both companies has strengthen their positions in parallel with the recent opening of new branches in several other countries including Central Asia region. The importance of Glyphosate came from being the most widely used herbicides globally since patent expiry of original product in 2000. It is a systemic noneselective herbicide that was discovered by Monsanto in 1970 then quickly adopted by farmers, even more so when Glyphosate resistant crops were introduced, enabling farmers to control weeds without killing their crops "Roundup Ready". Glyphosate is an acid

molecule that is formulated as various formulations including Isopropylamine, Diammonium, Monoammoniumor Potassium salts, as it is marketed worldwide in different solution strengths and with various adjuvants. The demand for Glyphosate is booming since last two decade. With the increase in planting area of transgenic crops and increase in bio-fuel projects in a number of countries worldwide. It is the largest selling agrochemical product across the world, whereas, global demand for Glyphosate is expected to double in the next five years as farmers switch to less labor intensive agricultural methods. By volume, Glyphosate contributes alone to around 5% out of the 32% market share occupied by generic agrochemicals from the total global crop protection market. Which is in terms of active ingredient volume is estimated by 2.4 M MT and is expected to reach 3.1 M MT by 2018, growing at a CAGR of 3.2%. Recently, China has become the largest Glyphosate producer in the world with a production capacity exceeding 600,000 tons. In 2012, China's Glyphosate output volume rapidly reached around 400,000 tons. Other manufacturers include Bayer, Dow AgroSciences, Du Pont, Monsanto and Zeneca. Since 2011 the price of Glyphosate has been growing high. Meanwhile, AstraNova currently covers around 7% of Glyphosate formulations in Turkey and looking forward to doubling its market share to 14% by 2014 then reach 25-30% within the following three years. AstraNova also produces other high quality and affordable agrochemical formulations to Turkish market including SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013

BEIJING KINGPENG LEADS CHINA'S EMERGENCE IN THE GREENHOUSE INDUSTRY Interview with the largest greenhouse manufacturer in China

ith roots that go back almost sixty years, Beijing Kingpeng, in one form or another, has been working with greenhouses for a long time. But it was only a decade ago that they branched off from the government entity where they got their new start and which still owns a large share of the company - to focus on high-tech greenhouses. Now they're at a forefront of a movement that seeks to put China on par with the European heavyweights of the greenhouse industry. “Chinese companies can now do the same or similar things that foreign greenhouse manufacturers used to do here,”

said Ray Yang, export manager for Beijing Kingpeng. “There were a lot of European companies meeting the demand for greenhouses and horticultural technique here, but nowadays it is harder for them to enter the market because they are not that competitive with the local companies.” Beijing Kingpeng has been one of the leading companies in the burgeoning Chinese greenhouse industry, and as the biggest manufacturer in the country, they now export their technology to over 30 countries around the world. For Yang, a big reason behind their growth has been an investment in technology and a
collaborative philosophy. “The most important thing you can provide to a customer is to show them how to maximize production,” said Yang. “So we collaborate with lots of international companies to focus on this aspect.” Their research facility in Beijing is a testament to that spirit of collaborative technological innovation, with ideas and technology adapted from the leading greenhouse manufacturers in the Netherlands. Yang noted that the facility was built three years ago and required a large investment, but one which they found necessary in order to grow as a leading company. In fact, he noted that they're now a year-deep into plans for a demo greenhouse in which they can SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013

show the world the latest greenhouse technology China has to offer. “We want to collaborate with companies to research and test the latest ideas,” said Yang. “We want to make it so that when people come here we can show them not just the best greenhouse technology in China, but the best technology from around the world.” Beijing Kingpeng has around 200 employees working on projects in horticulture in China and overseas. "The last years we have completed many hectares of modern greenhouses in China and around the world, with more and more focus of real production greenhouse, we have completed really nice projects that consisted of the latest technologies, like inside and outside shading screen, wet pad & fan cooling system, automated irrigation & fertigation, computerized control, sorting & packing technologies etc. Other parts of the world have noted our projects on these regions, and nowadays we are active in a lot of markets, both neighboring and overseas countries." A big part of the materials used in the projects are made by Beijing Kingpeng-owned factory. "All of the steel and aluminum parts are designed and manufactured at our own factory", said Yang. "Other parts are supplied by leading companies in related industries and the quality could be fully guaranteed." "We truly believe in cooperation with the right partners. Why do we invent the same materials or techniques twice? In the end, it will be all about working together. We do not regard other companies as our competitors, but more as SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013
our partners that are all in the industry with the same goal: To help growers to harvest quality and high yields as against the lowest input of energy and water, but with the highest amount of environmental consciousness!"

NEW HOLLAND AGRICULTURE: FARMING TECHNOLOGY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP US MAKE GOOD USE OF SCARCE RESOURCES THROUGH WELL PLANNED AND IMPLEMENTED MECHANIZATION AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES. IT ALSO MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR AGRICULTURE TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN DEVELOPING RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. THAT IS WHAT NEW HOLLAND'S “CLEAN ENERGY LEADER” STRATEGY IS ALL ABOUT: FINDING PRACTICAL AND ACCESSIBLE WAYS OF TRANSITIONING TO A LOW CARBON, RESOURCE EFFICIENT, SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE.
A
s one of the world's leading agricultural equipment manufacturers, New Holland Agriculture believes it has a role to play in supporting farming communities through a smooth transition to a sustainable development while protecting natural resources for future generations. New Holland provides solutions that improve farming efficiency and productivity by using accessible technology, offering cash crop and livestock farmers, contractors, vine growers and groundcare

A long term vision of sustainable growth However, when supporting the development of mechanized agriculture, New Holland's focus goes beyond productivity and efficiency, onto the environmental impact of technology applied to farming. It has been working in agricultural projects around the

world to support the transition to sustainable mechanized farming, integrating innovations and good practices that optimize the use of resources and increase productivity while cutting down costs, fuel consumption and emissions. When agriculture is approached with a long term vision of sustainable growth that aims to protect from the damaging effects of inappropriate farming practices, such as desertification or soil degradation, the result is a healthy agriculture that uses natural resources efficiently, is cost effective and productive. It is agriculture that contributes to the preservation of natural resources and is open to further development. Well planned and implemented mechanization is key Well planned and implemented mechanization is the key to achieving a sustainable development in agriculture. It is about the choice of the right machines
SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013
for the task and the local conditions. It is about using them correctly. And it is about adopting the appropriate farming techniques to obtain the most from scarce resources, optimising the use of land, water and fertilizer. Mechanization enables farmers to complete their harvesting when the crop is at its best and gives its highest yield, maximizing the quality and quantity of the harvest. Mechanization can be even more effective with equipment designed to save fuel and time, to apply new production technologies and comply with the latest environmental standards. These are machines such as the recently launched New Holland TD5 tractor, which features the powerful new Tier 3 engine that delivers the maximum in performance while cutting fuel consumption and minimizing exhaust emissions. New Holland has successfully supported the transition from manual to mechanized harvesting with its equipment and advice in several countries around the world. One of the benefits of the use of New Holland harvesting equipment has been the dramatic reduction in grain losses. With manual harvesting grain loss is typically around 15%; with aged machinery it can be lowered to 6%; with one of New Holland's current combines, it averages just 3% and can be further lowered with operator training. This means that if a farmer with the manpower to harvest 9 ha of land a day were to switch to mechanized harvesting, he would bring home about 23 tonnes of grains - almost 2,800 kg of grains more than with
manual harvesting in a day. A sustainable transition to mechanization also requires the involvement of expertise in complementary specialties, such as irrigation and cultivation techniques. When supporting such transition in various parts of the world, New Holland has in many instances brought in experts with the necessary know-how. For example, in a number of projects in Africa it facilitated the involvement of specialists in water-retention farming techniques to fight desertification problems. Mechanization and the environment: Clean Energy Leader Agricultural equipment today is designed and built to support the development of sustainable farming and renewable energy sources. It is equipped with engines generating low emissions and burning less fuel - including alternative fuels that these same machines help to produce. This is where New Holland's Clean Energy Leader strategy comes in. Launched in 2006, it aims to find practical and accessible ways to reconcile the needs of agriculture with increasingly urgent calls for action to safeguard the environment. The foundation blocks of the Clean Energy Leader strategy are biodiesel, ECOBlue™ solutions for low emissions, biomass, the NH2™ GULF AGRICULTURE
49

hydrogen tractor, the Energy Independent Farm concept, carbon footprint reduction and conservation agriculture. Emission reduction has become a high priority issue around the world, as governments strive to meet carbon reduction targets. New Holland's ECOBlue™ engine technology offers unique solution to dramatically cut emissions while increasing productivity and reducing fuel consumption. New Holland also offers extensive expertise and a wide range of equipment to grow, harvest and transport crops that provide alternative renewable energy sources. Its comprehensive line of machines and implements for biomass production ranges from selfpropelled forage harvesters combined with a complete offering of headers, to large square balers, combines, tractors and telehandlers.
Taking the topic of renewable energy and sustainability even further, New Holland has developed the Energy Independent Farm concept, which is being piloted in the La Bellotta Farm, in Italy. The project aims to create a complete and entirely selfsustaining virtuous cycle of energy production and utilization. It includes the only hydrogen-fuelled, zero emissions tractor in the world: the NH2™ tractor. A further integrated element of the Clean Energy Leader strategy is a web based application to calculate the carbon footprint of New Holland products. It provides farmers with useful information to help them make an informed decision on how to reduce their carbon footprint. Conservation agriculture is the latest pillar of New Holland's Clean Energy
Leader strategy. It means practicing minimum mechanical soil disturbance to maintain minerals within the soil, stop erosion and prevent water loss. It entails good residue management to improve the soil's health and productivity, crop diversification to reduce diseases, good management of inputs to increase their effectiveness and reduce overapplication with a consequent benefit to profitability. New Holland's wide range of Precision Land Management solutions can further enhance the effectiveness conservation farming practices - for example, the IntelliSteer guidance system which is ideal for controlled traffic farming, or the IntelliRate section control which reduces overlaps and ensures precise spray application. Conservation agriculture is not a dream or a possible solution for a fortunate few: it is a reality that is growing fast around the world at the rate of about 6 million hectares per year, as the real benefits become obvious and more widely accepted in the farming community. Agriculture for a sustainable future A healthy agriculture that optimizes the use of scarce resources while protecting them for future generations, that preserves the soil's fertility and minimizes waste, that is cost effective and productive while optimizing the use of energy and reducing its carbon footprint: this can be achieved with the right equipment and farming practices. This is the agriculture that delivers a sustainable future.

Abdul Razak Manager - GCC Countries & Yemen Health & Nutrition / Feed Additives Evonik Industries AG abdul.razak@evonik.com
EVONIK, THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIAL GROUP FROM GERMANY, IS ONE OF THE WORLD LEADERS IN SPECIALTY CHEMICALS. ITS ACTIVITIES FOCUS ON THE KEY MEGATRENDS HEALTH, NUTRITION, RESOURCE EFFICIENCY AND GLOBALIZATION WITH ITS STRENGTHS CREATIVITY, SPECIALIZATION, CONTINUOUS SELF-RENEWAL, AND RELIABILITY. EVONIK IS ACTIVE IN OVER 100 COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD. ABDUL RAZAK, EVONIK'S MANAGER REPRESENTING THE BUSINESS UNIT HEALTH & NUTRITION / FEED ADDITIVES FOR THE GULF COUNTRIES & YEMEN GIVES AN OVERVIEW ABOUT THE COMPANY'S STRONG AND LONG TERM PARTNERSHIP TO THE ANIMAL FEED INDUSTRY IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW GIVEN TO THE GULF AGRICULTURE MAGAZINE. Could you tell us details about the important feed additive products of your company? Evonik produces feed additives at six locations in five countries and is the only company in the world to manufacture and market from a single source all four of the important amino acids for animal nutrition - MetAMINO (DL-Methoinine), Biolys (L-Lysine), ThreAMINO (L-Threonine), TrypAMINO (L-Tryptophan) - as well as Mepron, the rumen protected DLMethionine. You said Evonik is a leader in amino acids; among the above four amino acids, which product gives you the position in the market, and what is your strategy there? Actually it is not just a product gives Evonik the No. 1 position in the market, but it is the combination of different innovative products and effective services that matters. The unique combination of first class services in amino acid analysis, animal nutrition and product handling with highly efficient products gave Evonik its reputed position in the global market.

And, it is correct that Evonik holds the biggest methionine production capacity in the world. We have four different production plants for MetAMINO at three locations in two continents. This makes it extremely unlikely that our production will be impaired all sites at the same time. Furthermore, we are backward integrated for the supply with intermediates; methionine intermediates are specialties not easily available in the world markets. Covering the full production chain from raw materials to DL-Methionine not only assures safe supply but is also an important factor for cost leadership. Evonik's current production capacity and our huge investments in existing and new production capacities are well ready to meet our customers' methionine demand today and in future. Different international sources have substitute products as in liquids and powder for supplementing methionine; Does Evonik has such substitute products? First of all, Evonik is the only major producer in the world that provides only DL-Methionine. DLSEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013
POULTRY
Methionine is the only product which is proven 100% bioavailable in poultry, thus it is simply the methionine source with the best cost/benefit ratio. Over the years, scientific and practical field trials have repeatedly demonstrated that liquid MHA-FA as well as MHA Calcium salt are less effective, often over-priced sources of methionine. For all that, Evonik is fully committed to DL-Methionine. Apart from poultry industry, what are other areas you focus with your feed additive products? We are a reliable partner also for dairy cow farms. Our product Mepron is a concentrated rumen protected DLMethionine, which delivers the highest amount of metabolizable methionine where the cow needs it for optimum production. Our product MetAMINO also plays a central role in ensuring balanced nutrition and optimum growth of various aquaculture fishes and shrimps. Is there any new innovative product from Evonik? Yes, our newly launched product CreAMINO is a good recent example for our innovation. CreAMINO is breakthrough nutritional innovation for broilers and layers. With this new feed additive we supply the animal with the semi essential nutrient creatine improving broiler and layer performance significantly. In Saudi Arabia, the product is currently under registration. How does Evonik operate in different countries in the Middle East? As in all markets worldwide, Evonik's commercial and technical experts are present also in the Gulf countries and in other countries in the Middle East, giving direct access to its customers from their corners. Our excellent services are accessible for our customers in person, on the phone, or on the web. We do not make compromises in our commitment to our customers. SEPTEMBER OCTOBER 2013
Apart from feed additive industry, what are other industries where Evonik is mainly active worldwide and specifically in the Middle East? Evonik is a well known name in different industries like production of biodiesel, bleaching and oxidation processes in different industry, for offgas and wastewater treatment, photovoltaics industry, Fillers & Pigments, C4 products in construction, petroleum, etc. industries, Superabsorbers for baby super diapers, Skin care specialties, pharmaceuticals and much more. Our products and industries ranging from body care to spaceflight and fireproof glass to high tech soccer boots, etc. Presently our most important business in the Middle East is the fast growing feed additives business. Evonik has been very successful in the Middle East for more than four decades and is now erecting production facilities in this region. In view of its attractive geographical position between Europe and Asia, and the plentiful supply of petrochemical feed stocks in the Gulf states, we regard this region as strategically important. Now Evonik is actively participating in regional growth extending its presence considerably. The biggest project of Evonik in the Middle East is its upcoming superabsorbent production facility in Saudi Arabia which is coming on production stream by end of this year. Last but not least, can you give us a brief background of your functions in Evonik? I joined Degussa in 1994 (Degussa is the predecessor to Evonik). In 2000 I was promoted as Manager of its Saudi Office looking after different businesses in Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia & Eritrea under different Business Lines of the company. Later from 2003 onwards I was moving exclusively to the Business Unit Heath & Nutrition / Feed Additives as responsible Manager for GCC Countries and Yemen. GULF AGRICULTURE

CREATINE SOURCE IMPROVES BROILER PERFORMANCE Better performance with CreAMINO速 Creatine, known in athletes' nutrition for more than 15 years, plays a major role in energy metabolism. The creatine/phosphocreatine system functions as a backup to the adenosine-triphosphate/adenosine-diphosphate system in order to store and mobilise energy when required on short notice, the latter being of particular importance for the function of muscle cells. Guanidinoacetic acid, formed from the amino acids glycine and arginine, is the only immediate precursor of creatine in the body.

AT DAY 7, 14, 28 AND 35 PEN WEIGHTS AS WELL AS FEED CONVERSION WERE RECORDED. MORTALITY WAS NOTED ON A DAILY BASIS. SUBSEQUENTLY FEED CONVERSION RATIO WAS CALCULATED, ALSO CORRECTED FOR MORTALITY. A total of 1680 day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks were equally distributed to 24 pens with 70 animals each. The pens were littered with chopped straw and each pen contained a feeder and a row of nipple drinkers. Both feed and water were supplied ad libitum. Temperature and lighting regime were following breeder's recommendation. The experiment comprised 2 dietary treatments with 12 replicates each. Basal starter (days 18) and grower-finisher (days 9-35) diets were mainly consisting of wheat, corn and soybean

meal with analysed energy (protein) values of 12.50 MJ ME/kg (22.4%) and 12.30 MJ ME/kg (21.8%) (starter and grower-finisher), respectively. supplemented with no or with 0.06% (starter)/0.08% (growerfinisher) CreAMINO®. Supplementation of 0.08% CreAMINO® in the growerfinisher diet was chosen to adjust for the dilution effect of whole wheat inclusion. At day 7, 14, 28 and 35 pen weights as well as feed conversion were recorded. Mortality was noted on a daily basis. Subsequently feed conversion ratio was calculated, also corrected for mortality. At the end of the experiment 40 (20 male and 20 female) birds per treatment were randomly selected for breast meat evaluation. The broilers were weight individually, then their breast meat including the collarbone was removed and weighed. Performance data are shown in Table 1. Feed intake remained unaffected, whereas final weight (+ 55g) and feed conversion ratio (-0.053 g/g) were significantly improved in the CreAMINO® supplemented group. As shown in Figure 2 breast meat yield was significantly improved in both male and female broilers. Supplementing a creatine precursor to a commercial broiler diet therewith clearly shows an effect on creatine target tissues. This also corresponds to an overall CreAMINO® effect of improving weight gain (+ 50g/bird), breast meat yield (+ 10g/bird) and feed conversion ratio (-0.05 pts), which has been demonstrated in various studies. Figures 3 and 4 show a summary of CreAMINO® trials at different locations and supplementation levels and their associated effects on feed conversion ratio and breast meat yield of broilers in comparison to a control diet. INTEGRITY, HONESTY AND SAFETY IN THE BUSINESS OF FORAGE

O
ver one hundred years ago, a group of American farmers and traders formed the National Hay Association. They had a simple goal: To establish a standard for integrity, honesty and safety in the business of forage. When the NHA was established in 1895, few could have imagined that forage would become a billion dollar export industry. Today forage is a leading export from the United States, and represents the single largest agricultural commodity shipped by container. Twenty nine members of the NHA have established the U.S. Forage Export Council, a group dedicated to NHA's original goals of integrity, honesty and safety. USFEC is not a trade organization, and at meetings members do not discuss customers and

pricing. Instead, members are united under a common goal of strengthening the safety reputation of US forage around the world. USFEC members strive to develop strong standards for inspection, sampling and testing, gaining international market access for US forage based on rules that are clear, fair and science-based. Most US exporters are based on the West Coast, where there is an ideal combination of good soil and climate for quality forage, with easy access to major ports. USFEC members either grow their own product, or buy from established farms. In either case, the fields are regularly inspected with a focus on safety and high quality. That same focus is carried over inside warehouses and processing facilities, where forage is again inspected. USFEC members double compress their forage, which maximizes transportation

efficiency and provides an added level of quality assurance. The Gulf Region presents new opportunities for US exporters, and USFEC
members seek to develop longlasting, mutually-beneficial relationships with new customers. A list of USFEC members is available at the USFEC website, www.usfec.org, and more information about the organization can be obtained by contacting john@usfec.org.
