Innovative system boosts greenhouse crop yields by delivering more light Growers are suffering considerable losses to harvests of tomatoes and other products as a result of having to resort to whitewashing to cool greenhouses, which has the unfortunate side effect of depriving crops of valuable sunlight. According to a new study carried out in Spain, the majority of greenhouses in the Mediterranean basin have very inefficient ventilation systems, aggravated by insect screens over air vents that act as a physical barrier to air circulation, leading growers to resort to simple, but inefficient cooling methods.

MARCH APRIL 2014

Report authors the Andalusian Institute for Research and Training for Agriculture's greenhouse unit (IFAPA) and shading technology specialist Svensson found that whitewashing caused considerable yield losses as a result of a shortage of sunlight reaching crops. In fact, researchers found that the reduction in light transmission occurred during the entire day, even during periods (morning and afternoon) when shading would not be necessary. However, by using dynamic or active shading systems as an alternative to the quick fix of whitewashing the study revealed that growers can

achieve an increase in yields of up to 25%. Shading systems react to the temperature and the intensity of the sunlight entering the greenhouse, meaning that effective protection for crops can be provided at the hottest times of the day, particularly around noon when temperature and humidity reach harmful levels for plants. The joint study carried out by Svensson and IFAPA at the institution research centre in La Mojonera, AlmerĂa looked at the performance of the Harmony mobile screen during the spring-summer 2013 tomato season, examining the effect on the greenhouse climate and tomato yield.

NEWS UPDATE

As part of the project, one greenhouse was equipped with a mobile shading screen while a whitewashing was applied to a second facility. Researchers found over the course of the study that plants in the greenhouse using the shading system received 27.9% more sunshine than the whitewashed facility, with the yield in the mobile shaded greenhouse higher during the whole harvesting period. Overall, the report revealed that the tomato yield in the greenhouse using the Harmony mobile screen was 25% higher during the season

than the whitewashed greenhouse, with 12.4 more fruits harvested per metre square. The study concluded that using the mobile shading system during the central hours of the day - when temperatures can exceed safe levels for crops - delivered higher precocity and an increase in the tomato yield compared with traditional whitewashed greenhouses.

Natural fungi solution offers growers help when faced with drought Organic fertilizer and plant protection specialist Agrocode, part of the Kimitec Group, has launched a new product that makes use of natural, beneficial fungi to help fruit and vegetable growers achieve viable harvests even when faced with droughts or other challenging conditions. With fresh produce growers in many of the world's drier regions facing ever more extreme weather, the importance of realizing the maximum potential of natural environments is now vital for achieving sustainable supplies of fresh fruits and vegetables. To begin to address these needs, Agrocode has acquired the patent for Mycogel, an innovative product which uses natural, beneficial fungi (mycorrhizae in vitro) to help plants endure extreme conditions increasing water and nutrient absorption by crops. The beneficial fungi present in the gel work to stimulate plant growth and survival during stress conditions, such as drought, salinity, poor soil quality or extreme pH (acidity). Mycogel's natural ingredients also help plants protect themselves against harmful bacteria, fungus or nematodes (pathogens) and pest attacks, while promoting greater plant vigour and survival after transplantation. However, most importantly from a production point of view, the beneficial fungi present in the product help achieve an optimal nutritional balance in plants, in the process increasing crop yields and profitability. Mycogel uses mycorrhizae, a beneficial fungi which enters plant roots without damaging them and instead stimulates significant root growth. According to Agrocode's own research, for each centimetre of plant root treated, three metres of mycorrhizal root are produced which enable the plant to access areas of soil that could not previously be reached. With the highest content available on the market of ultrapure mycorrhizae, MARCH APRIL 2014

NEWS UPDATE

Mycogel helps plants to better absorb water and nutrients, ensuring a greater quality and quantity of production. The fungi contained in Mycogel emit hyphae (fungus' long, branching structure) that enable them to reach these previously inaccessible layers of soil and in the process create a formidable network for the absorption of water and nutrients. They also produce enzymes that allow plants to absorb all sources of phosphorous present in the soil - even those that are blocked - enabling crops to benefit from one of the most important sources of natural nutrition. Speaking about the launch of the product, Kimitec

general manager Félix Garcia said Mycogel would help strengthen the company's position in global markets. “We have managed to achieve a perfect combination of water, nutrients and phosphorous in Mycogel, through which we can ensure a high crop production levels,” he said. Garcia said Agrocode's acquisition of the worldwide patent for Mycogel from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) would enable the company to enter and become technological leaders in the global market for mycorrhizal fungi inoculants. “Our patent protects the in vitro manufacturing process of

this mycorrhizae-based inoculant whose gel-basis enables perfect application via irrigation and maintains all forms of mycorrhization - not just the spores - in an active condition,” he explained. The in vitro manufacturing process also allows Agrocode to offer clients a guarantee that no other microorganisms are present in the gel. “Our manufacturing process enables us to offer a product with a mycorrhization content that is 50 times higher than any rival solution, as a result of which we are able to deliver the most technologically-advanced and efficient product of its kind available on the market,” Garcia added.

audi Arabia and Oman are leading a fresh wave of investment in the Gulf's aquaculture industry, as increasing regional fish consumption gives investors a big opportunity to capitalise on the fastest growing food processing sector in the Middle East. In December 2013, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Agriculture said it would inject

an additional US$10.6 billion into aquaculture projects to produce one million tons of fish in the next 16 years, while Oman, which has long been at the forefront of aquaculture in the Gulf region, announced that it plans to invest US$1.3 billion in fisheries development up to 2020. The UAE, which has the world's largest sturgeon fish farm in Abu Dhabi, also has big

plans, with the country's Ministry of Environment and Water expected to announce several multi-billion dollar aquaculture projects in the coming months. Taking place from 25-27 March at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, AGRA Middle East provides a comprehensive all-in-one platform for exhibitors to showcase their latest innovations to thousands of key regional decision makers. Though traditionally dominated by suppliers of agriculture, horticulture, and poultry products and services, the three-day event has seen aquaculture related exhibition space more than double in the last year, and its organisers, Informa Exhibitions, expects this trend to keep growing. Husain said that regional countries need to prioritise their investments into products, and key geographical locations that are sustainable in order to achieve food security in the region. He added: “MENA countries can succeed in conducting cost effective policies to achieve sustainable agricultural growth by forming strategic partnerships with countries in the Central Asian Republic, North Africa, Pakistan and Turkey. AGRA Middle East 2014 has grown by 26 per cent year-onyear in exhibitor numbers, attracting 220 major players looking to meet an audience of key decision makers with a

combined purchasing power in excess of US$120 million. The three-day event returns with two dedicated industry conferences; the Agribusiness Outlook Forum, addressing the

key issues surrounding the mounting food import bill for the GCC; and the Poultry Outlook Forum, offering the latest advances in poultry research.

George Eustice, Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Farming, Food and Marine Environment in the UK stating not only can the UK export food to the UAE, but it can also help the Emirates when it comes to agriculture. “We have a lot of expertise in these areas, everything from irrigation systems to developing new strains of plant and wheat that are high yielding and rely on less water, and it may well be that we can share some of that expertise.” said Eustice. Husain will join an impressive line-up of regional and international agricultural experts at the Agribusiness Outlook Forum, focusing on key issues surrounding the mounting food import bill for the GCC, which is forecast to reach US $53.1 billion by 2020 according to the Economist Intelligence Unit. His presentation will explore how agricultural opportunities, such as corporate farming -

large-scale farming with greater economies of scale to large producers - can attract more investors, and will evaluate the different financial options to help minimise risk. “Corporate farming in the Middle East region is only a small part of the industry which is currently made up of smaller scale farming with fragmented land holding,” said Husain.“If we can move toward corporate farming, have larger farms, have something which is suitable for the geography, then it will attract investors as long as there is a defined, profitable demand for the product.” The Agribusiness Outlook Forum is a feature of the opening day of the three-day AGRA Middle East exhibition, the region's only event covering agribusiness, poultry & livestock, fishing & aquaculture, floriculture & horticulture and agricultural

Born to Roar. Built to Perform The two models of the Puma CVT Series are designed for performance. The Series features low emission, intercooled common-rail diesel engines, with rated 182 hp and 213 hp models. With a 6.75 litre turbocharged powering, Puma CVT tractors offer outstanding performance with reduced fuel consumption. For those who demand more, the Engine Power Management delivers up to 38hp of extra power for excellent handling and more lugging ability in field PTO applications, transport or hydraulic demands, even in the toughest conditions. The Puma CVT tractors offer maximum torque at just 1400 rpm in draft applications and 1600 rpm in PTO operations. They also benefit from 600-hour service

intervals which are the longest in the industry. "What impressed us is the performance of the six-cylinder engine, says Marco Pissors, agricultural engineer at Ackerbau GbR Falkenhain in Germany. The company has been using Case IH tractors since its foundation and it has recently purchased a Puma CVT tractor. “We feel that the engine is even more agile, especially in terms of response and pulling power," adds Pissors. Hans-Martin Schiffer is a

The Smooth Ride of a True All-rounder Leveraging more than a decade of Case IH engineering expertise in continuously variable transmission technology, the new generation of transmission on the Puma CVT Series really puts the operator in control of the tractor's power. From 0 to 50 kph, Puma CVT tractors accelerate without the driver having to change the gear. "You hardly notice gear changes. The Puma runs smoothly in all situations," says Schiffer. The Automatic Productivity Management system selects the most efficient gear ratio and engine speed combination and

it concentrates on optimizing efficiency while the driver concentrate on the work. "Puma CVT tractors really raises the bar", steps in Pissors who also lists other key strengths. "You just need to set the split throttle lever to the minimum and maximum engine speed and the Automatic Productivity Management system does the rest. This means less stress on the driver but it also saves fuel." Well Equipped for the Highest Productivity Even the heaviest implement can be operated with ease

NEW LINDSAY BROCHURE FOCUSES ON INCREASING ALFALFA YIELDS THROUGH EFFICIENT IRRIGATION SOLUTIONS

L

indsay Corporation, maker of Zimmatic by Lindsay irrigation systems, has released a new alfalfa profitability brochure called "Increasing Alfalfa and Other Forage Yields Through Efficient Irrigation Solutions." The eight-page full-color brochure provides best practices and the latest research for achieving higher alfalfa yields, optimizing water use and lowering costs through precision irrigation. “Alfalfa is one of the most important forage crops grown for hay in the world today,” says Omar Zaghloul, Lindsay

30

GULF AGRICULTURE

Regional Director, Middle East and Near East. “Irrigating alfalfa is different from irrigating annual grain crops since the objective is to produce a high yield of forage and not grain. With ample water, alfalfa has the ability produce high yields of very good quality feed that is high in protein.” The brochure identifies management objectives for irrigated alfalfa, including the ideal soil water content in the root zone, when light or frequent irrigation is best, prevention of water runoff, irrigation before and after harvest, and how to prevent

weeds from germinating. Zaghloul says a lack of water at any stage of alfalfa growth will lower yield and cause the forage quality to peak in fewer days after harvest, and become overly mature faster than under normal conditions. Grass and grass legume mixes and how to best use irrigation for maximum forage production and quality are also discussed in the brochure. “The correct mix of grasses and legumes is one of the most important aspects of high production from irrigated pasture. The forage species that perform well in dryland MARCH APRIL 2014

conditions may not excel in irrigated conditions. Irrigating species that are poorly adapted to irrigation will neve result in top production,” Zaghloul says. The brochure contains colorful charts and graphs that show the relationship between alfalfa and forage yields and different irrigation amounts and how alfalfa and forage water requirements are related to the crop's evapotranspiration (ET) rate at each stage of growth. Pivot options to increase water efficiency and maximize yields are also discussed. shortage of organic matter in the soil, the international demand for organic fertilizer is significantly increasing. Komeco is the only company in the market, who makes use of the biological composting technique and this results in high-quality organic fertilizer. In doing so, Komeco can fulfill the agricultural need for nutrients to sustainable manage the soil. Based on the high content of organic material and humus, Komeco's composted organic fertilizer improves the structure

In view of the substantial organic farming development witnessed in Saudi Arabia, demand of organic fertilizer has increased largely. Accordingly, the Al Safi Dairy Co becomes indispensable to strengthen and

meet the region's requirement. Al Safi Organic Fertilizer Factory is best equipped and has the capacity to produce 80,000 tons per annum different grade of Organic fertilizers, under strict quality assurance program. Fertilizer is a substance added to soil to improve plants' growth and crop yields by making essential nutrients available to the growing plants. Organic Fertilizers is made from naturally occurring substances which included animal or vegetable waste such as manure, plant waste, blood meal, alfalfa meal, seaweed that has been decomposed and recycled as a fertilizers and soil amendment. Why use organic fertilizers because it reclaims our environment, builds soil fertility, provides food for micro-organisms that supply energy for healthy plant growth and keeps the soil alive. The quality of compost is generally judged by its odor, colour, particle size, pH, soluble salts, maturity, organic matter content, carbon to nitrogen ratio, weed seeds, and the presence of phytotoxic compounds etc. Finished compost looks like dark brown to black in colour. It smells like a rich forest soil or leaf depending on its ingredients. Temperature is stable enough to cured. Turkish ornamental Plant Growers Association (SUSBIR) is one of the 7 sub-unions, that has been formed in accordance with their fields of activities as specified the Seed Growing Code No. 5553, which came into force on 8 November 2006, and as the central Association these 7 Associations have formed the Turkish Seed Union. SUSBIR began operations in April 2008 and made 5th general assembly in July 2012. Ornamental plants grown and sold by our members: Trees, Small ornamental Trees, Annual Seasonal Flowers, Palm trees, Shrubs, Climbers, Ground Covers, Lawn, Ornamental Grass, Indoor Ornamental Plants, Cut flowers. The major target of SUSBIR is to organize ornamental plant sector in Turkey and to implement various activities serving to the improvement of the ornamentals plant growers in Turkey i.e. with their quality and competitive power, they become worldwide recognized and reliable and join among world leaders. Also, to attain an institutional structure in the sector, improve quality of production and develop marketing techniques, organize courses and seminars for training, assure sale of the grower's plants at the actual market price, to protect their interests at the highest level.

We also aimed to increase quality and variety of the products in the market, improve competition conditions and to create a union with broad participation throughout the country, where the problems of the sectors are expressed and defined and solutions for proper development of the sector are seeked. Growth of the sector will be possible with quality and healthy ornamental plant cultivation, growing the right varieties at the right quantities that are parallel to the market demand, as a result the plants will be sold at the right price and the grower's efforts will be valued. For such a system to work, an auto-control system will be created spontaneously,

resulting from keeping the sector under record and forming a central and shared information base for growers on the one hand and from flow of information and sharing this information and data flow through the majority of the growers on the other hand. And the grower, who realizes profit, will naturally prefer to invest for the growth of production and development. Registration, representation, participation and contributions of sector members are very important to speed up this cycle, to accelerate the growth of the industry and produce common solutions to problems of the sector. SUSBIR, with its 224 members representing major

growers, importers exporters and landscape contractors, aims to create the structure described above where the problems of sector are discussed and solutions are found by members and necessary orientations are created for the healthy growth of the sector.

CASE STUDY

Case study: AgHort Dairy farming in a controlled climate. Sanborn, Iowa U.S.A

Quick facts The effects of a Munters Cross Ventilated building • • • • •

Reduced heat stress on the herd Comfortable temperatures year round Consistent milk production Maximize feed conversion Improved conception rate

One thousand cool cows for each brother The Featured Farm The Van Ess Dariy farm located in Sanborn, Iowa, is run by five brothers and overseen by their parents, Harvey and Lisa Van Ess. The family saw an opportunity to move their dairy operation from Idaho to Iowa which would allow them to increase the number of cows in their heard.

Heat Stress Problem The climate in the Prairies of Iowa is mild, but, the air flow from the desert area in the south west region of the United States moves up into Iowa and can result in unusually hot, dry summer temperatures. The Van Ess family needed to find a way to avoid the dips in production, which happens when the cows experience heat stress.

Munters Corporation, Business Area AgHort 4215 Legion Drive Mason, MI 48854-1036 USA / Phone: +1 517-676-7070 Fax: 517-676-7078 Email: aghort.info@munters.com / www.munters.us

Cool Solution The family was introduced to the Munters Ventilation System. The system allows the entire heard to be housed in a single enclosed building which saves on the construction costs and animal management. With the building being enclosed they are able to control inside temperatures and avoid heat stress, resulting in production loss.

The Van Ess building houses over 5000 dairy cows in one enclosed building with enough space to house an additional 1000 cows. There are 120 VX 55”, 2HP fans which move over 4 million cubic feet of air every minute (CFM). The building is designed to exchange all the air in the building every minute. To cool the intake air we have over 115,832 cubic feet of CELdek pad and 960 feet of CT Series Evaporative Cooling. Company spokesman Jeremy VanEss states that the Munters Ventilation Systems performs even better than he expected. He is able to keep the cows at a comfortable temperature all year long, which has resulted in no dips in production through out the year. The family selected Munters because of the reputation of being the market leader and the knowledge of his Sales Representative. Cross Ventilation Dairy cow cooling has evolved over the years. A market innovation lead by Munters is the Cross Ventilated Building. A Cross Ventilation System uses VX exhaust fans, on one side of the building, with Express Cool Evaporative Cooling system on the opposite side. The exhaust fans draw the fresh outside air through the evaporative cooler, which can cool the outside air by 15-20 degrees F. The cool air coupled with the airspeed generated by the fans, cool the livestock, maximizing feed conversion and production output. The system is run with a computer controller leaving the system to run itself based on the programmed temperature settings.

Each building has a stacked cooling system containing CELdek® evaporative cooling pads along one side, measuring 5 feet tall (x2) by 80 feet long

Layer Cage: 100% of our Mesh is made out of hot dipped pre-galvanized heavy coated wire which makes it extremely corrosion-resistant. Laboratory Test Certificate for the Zinc Coating of the wire used would be provided along with the material if the customer wishes to check the accuracy of our claims. Wire used for manufacturing the mesh is sturdy yet flexible and ductile in nature which facilitates the fabrication of the mesh to build poultry cages and ensures strength due to bending. Automatic Feeding System: KISHORE has designed an automatic feeding system. Automatic feeding system is a rail movement type of system which can be moved with the winches. Feeding systems can be used for deep litter. It also reduces the labour cost & time. Maintain with high quality. Automatic Nipple Drinking Systems: Specially designed Ziggity watering systems provide broilers & breeder nipple with the right amount of water - without spillage - at every stage of growth. Young birds get the small amount of water they need, while full grown broilers have an ample supply daily. Feed Mixing Controller: A perfectly controlled climate improves poultry performance and your profitability. Efficient control also saves on energy costs for ventilation, heating and lighting. Automatic Egg Packer with Egg Conveyor for Cage: The Speedpack 110 is an egg

packing machine, which packs eggs quickly yet carefully on 30 cell trays. The main characteristic of the Speedpack 110 is its speed, of more than 40,000 eggs per hour, combined with a very compact design. This means that it is possible to easily overview the egg packing room from the checking point. As you are now able to oversee the whole process, more time can be spent on checking the eggs. The Speedpack 110 utilizes an efficient principle, which means that any and each egg only encounters three transfers on its way to the tray. This reduces the risk of hairline cracks to an absolute minimum.

KVA group is recognized as a pioneer and technology driver in the global aquaculture industry for more than 30 years. Today, the company is the world's largest supplier from single components to large, advanced and tailor made cage farming projects. AKVA group is present in all markets with offices in Norway, Chile, Denmark, Scotland, Iceland, Canada, Vietnam, Australia and Turkey. Plastic Cages: Many have tried to copy these products, but none have managed to match the genuine Polarcirkel designs and quality builds. Plastic cages started out as small single pipe circles, but now our largest models approach 200m circumference, and with floating pipes of 500mm diameter. Both circular and square cage systems are available. Combined with AKVA group´s global sales and service network, the Polarcirkel

48

Cage is well proven and recognized worldwide. Steel Cages: Wavemaster is the world's leading supplier of steel cages with close to 12.000 cages delivered since 1985! The cages provide an ideal platform for fish farming. Wide non-slip walkways with high free-board around all sides of the cages allow the operator full flexibility of operation and easy access from cage to cage. This is becoming essential for good husbandry and maintenance. The compactness and simplified mooring arrangements make Wavemaster Steel Cages a very attractive option for many sites. Nets: AKVA group is leading supplier of cage farming nets for both plastic cages and steel cages. We an offer a wide range of fiber nets and non-fiber nets, bird nets for predator protection, catching nets for harvesting and service deals for cleaning and antifouling. The new EcoNet concept is an alternative net solution with

high durability and escape prevention as well as minimum maintenance. All the nets are tailor-made to fit your special location and the local quality demands. Feed Systems: The central feed system concept was invented by AKVA in 1980 and is today the most popular and reliable feed system world wide. The system is suitable for all species feeding on pellets. It is now also fully integrated with camera control, pellet- and environmental sensors and Fishtalk production control software. Net Cleaning Systems: Marine fouling is driven by sunlight and high water temperatures. Therefore, the waterflow through the cages and oxygen level will be reduced. Strong algae growth causes the cage/net to become heavier, which causes stress and in the worst case scenario a breakdown of the cage construction. MARCH APRIL 2014

ver the last years Egersund Net has expanded greatly with regard to business volume as well as the number of newly established subdivisions. From the modest start in Svanavågen, Egersund, the company now has a number of service departments along the coast of Norway (Egersund, Rabben, Kristiansund, Vevelstad, Brønnøysund, Vesterålen) while the production of new nets takes place in the Lithuanian town Taurage. Each of our subdivisions also keeps various types of special nets, such as roof and container nets, in store for speedy delivery. Recently Egersund Net has established a special fish farming gear shop, at Rabben in the municipality of Austevoll, offering a rich assortment of goods, such as work clothes, HSE gear, chains and mooring equipment. At present Egersund Net is firmly established as a safe supplier and market leader with regard to seine net technology, services and equipment for the fish farming business. Service on fish-farming nets: Egersund Net offers services for the fish farming industry from our modern premises along the norwegain coast. Through our focus on quality and environmental demands, we have installations with high capacity adjusted to the needs of our customers. All our premises are certified according to ISO 9001 and Norwegian Standard 9415. Antifouling of Nets: In our unique antifouling installations we focus on optimizing the effect of various types of antifouling; product safety, environment and HES. MARCH APRIL 2014

PRODUCING FISH FARMING NETS SINCE 1970's The fish farming nets are pre-treated with primer that gives an optimal and longlasting protection of netting and ropes. The primer "glues" the fibres together and creates a stable and homogeneous basis before an antifouling top coating is applied. Self-polishing treatment is then applied as an exterior antifouling of netting and rope. As the antifouling is teared down, the primer will protect the fibres in the netting from fouling and it will keep the strength in the netting. This will also make it easier to wash the nets. Nets which are treated

with our antifouling can be stored for a long time. Egersund Net has produced netting since 1996, and has a modern machinery. Our production is certified according to ISO 9001. Today we have a production capacity on about 1500 tons a year. Egersund offers finished mooring systems for fish farming. Complete packages where everything is completely assembled and certified.
