A look at the work and experience gained during my 4 month internship at the product design studio, Poetic Lab.

Poetic Lab is a London based product design studio that was founded in 2013. Being a young company it consisted of only 3 desginers including myself and so I was exposed to many as-pects of the design process including: concept generation, con-cept development, product engineering, sales, web design and graphic design. As well as taking on consultancy work, the company also has it’s own design label called ‘Beyond Object’. Each product is designed with the belief that daily objects can be crafted as func-tional sculptures.

BIRCH COLLECTION

AMBIENTE EXHIBITON I spent a week in Frankfurt representing Beyond Object at the Ambiente exhibition. I was invloved with the designing as well as the overall running of the exhibition stand.

A project brief set by Alcantara for an exhibition in Rome. This was my main project during my time at Poetic Lab and gave me experience in delivering a design project from concept through to manufacture, under a tight deadline.

It was my responsibility to design and deliver the entire kickstarter campaign for Dueto dual pen. This involved creating all graphical elements, text and helping launch a webpage for the product.

In partnership with the other product designer at the company we completed the full 2016 catalogue in 2 days. This included creating photo-realistic renders and photoshop touch ups to all the new products.

Designed as an evolution from the bamboo collection, the birch collection of tables and book shelves were designed as part of a consultancy project.

It was my responsibility to design the Beyond Object GIF that was to feature on the Dezeen website. The GIF was created using photoshop.

SKILLS PRACTICED

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE

Sketching and concept development is central to the design process at Poetic lab. Myself and two other designers would come up with ideas as a team, choosing which ideas to take forward as we go.

Due to the company being very small, it was the responsibility of the design team to also make some of the products designed ready to be manufactured.

PROTOTYPING

CAD

Prototyping was a key process for many of the projects I was involved in. The studio had many materials and tools to create mock-ups and thus prove and better communicate our ideas and concepts to clients.

GRAPHIC DESIGN As well as creating catalogues and webpages for the company, I was responsible for designing proposal documents for each project that would be sent to the client.

Throughout my internship I used CAD daily. I was able to gain extensive experience in using solidworks as well as beginning to develop my skills in Rhino.

EXHIBITION & INSTALLATION DESIGN During my time at Poetic lab there were 3 exhibitions to prepare for: Ambiente in Frankfurt, Alcantara MAXII exhbibiton in Rome and Maison Object in Paris. For each exhibition a stand had to be designed including the layouts and stand graphics.

ALCANTARA MAXII PROJECT My first and main project at Poetic lab was to design and deliver two installations for the Alcantara MAXII exhibition that was to be held in february 2016. The exhibition was called ‘Local Icons’, whereby nine designers were called upon to create iconic objects to interpret ten cities of two main geopolitical areas, in an imaginary dialogue between East and west.

+ WHAT WE DID

RESEARCH

THE BRIEF We were asked to create one or more objects that were representative of our chosen city and could embody its memory over time – something which in its simplest form could be called a “souvenir”. We were also asked to create a setting for displaying the object, an installation that gives the public an idea of what we consider is the city’s true essence.

CONCEPT DEVELOPEMENT

There was no limit to the typology of memory-object; the main material had to be Alcantara, which could be mixed together with other materials in the freest possible experimentation. Projections, videos, photos, revisited items of local craftwork, etc. could be employed in addition to Alcantara in the installation. TAIPEI CONCEPT Taipei is an incredibly busy city with an innumerable amount of historical attractions, excellent night markets, shopping districts, as well as cultural amenities like modern coffee houses, museums, restaurants and fantastic nightlife. Under every roof there is a different story. Our concept to the Alcantara-MAXXI project aimed to evoke a memory of the city through giving the observer the sense they were looking over the colourful roofs of Taipei. Each roof was represented by an open book, each one containing its own story.

CAD / RENDER

PROTOTYPE

LONDON CONCEPT In order to capture the essence of the city, we created a “London Tube Chandelier” - giving the centre stage to this normally out of sight underground world. A chandelier is something to be marvelled at and observed from different angles. From the side view, the colourful long extruded tubes made in Alcantara could be seen to create a beautiful abstract city landscape that constantly changed depending on the viewing perspective. When approaching the installation and looking up at the chandelier from directly underneath, the observer was able to discover the tubes form the iconic London underground map which we chose to symbolise the city.

DUETO KICKSTARTER THE PROJECT Dueto is an innovative pen/stylus suitable for both casual and formal occasions. With a stunningly minimal, seamless design and manufactured using CNC machined premium aluminium, it is both beautiful to look at and practical for daily use. My role was to market and develop all the branding and graphic material for the Dueto kickstarter campaign. This involved photoshop editing product photos, writing and designing the campaign page, devleoping an external website and helping with the creation of the kickstarter video.

CROWD FUNDING COMPLETION In less than 3 weeks we were able to successfully raise the ÂŁ5000 needed to begin the manufacturing of Dueto. Since the kickstarter backing, Dueto also gained great feedback at the Ambiente exhibition I attended as well as selling well on the Beyong Object website. HANHSI CHEN FOUNDER AND HEAD DESIGNER “ For such a young designer, it took Matt very little time to adapt and thrive in our design studio here in London. After seeing his portfolio online and impressing us during a meeting, I hired Matt as an intern during our busiest time of the year. From day one he has been given a lot of responsibility for delivering important projects with tight deadlines. He has dealt with everything incredibly professionally and produced work of a very high quality. Our team at Poetic Lab is very small and so he has had to practice all stages of the design process from concept through to manufacture, in a high pressure environment. I was particularly impressed with his work for the Alcantara MAXII installation project that is to be exhibited in Rome this February. He produced some thought provoking and exciting concepts and developed these into an installation that will no doubt be a highlight at this year’s exhibition. I believe Matt would be great asset to any design team and earns my highest recommendation.”

A day pack for Young Travellers helping to reduce misplacement and theft of valuables

THE BRIEF

MAJOR PROJECT

To design a product that prevents the loss and theft of young traveller’s valuables whilst travelling. The product was to be aimed at a new wave of young ‘flashpacking’ travellers that take a larger amount of technology with them when they travel.

SCENARIO | FEATURES

Axis backpacks consist of an innovative rotational compartment which gives users access to their valuables without the need to take off the backpack. When the compartment is returned back into the bag, the pockets become consealed, giving the user’s valuables effective protection against pickpockets

FINAL RENDERS

The final renders were created using Creo Parametric solid modelling software. The renders were then produced using Keyshot and Photoshop.

KEY BENEFITS

MAKING THE ESSENTIALS ACCESSIBLE

When travelling, routine is important in order to avoid misplacing items. Axis backpacks allow the user’s valuables to be accessed and quickly returned to the protected compartment.

ORGANISATION IN TIMES OF STRESS

Often travelling can bring about stressful situations where organisation is the key to avoiding misplacement. Axis backpacks modular compartment allows users to keep their valuables organised and close to them at all times.

SAFER STORAGE OF PERSONAL VALUABLES

Travelling with valuables leaves travellers with the risk of having their items stolen. Axis backpacks conceals users items subtly and securely. When the compartment is returned into the backpack the pockets are out of sight and out of reach from any potential thieves.

an individual training technology for blind football players

LIVE PROJECT

To design a suite of sports training products that work together to improve an athletes performance and skill in a particular sport. The product must be able to benefit from internet updates to enable the athlete to challenge themselves, allowing development to an almost professional level.

THE PROBLEM

Since its inclusion in the paralypics and increase in media coverage, blind football has quickly grown in popularity both in participation and in support. As with any sport, players want to practice and improve their skills. In blind football this is difficult to do individually, however it could be made possible through the use of technology and smart design.

Main Problem areas

1

Rely almost al entirely hearing on hea

2

Require Requir a coach to train

FINAL RENDERS THE CONCEPT ‘First Touch’ assistive training aid uses haptic and audio feedback to teach the player key skills in movement, positioning, dribbling and spatial awareness. The 'Haptic vest' gives 360 degree communication to the user on the position of the Bluetooth enabled SmartCones and SmartBall.

PRODUCT SCENARIO ONE

1. The multifunction smart cones can give the player goal location.

2. Voice feedback lets the player know how they performed during the task. 3. If the player were to miss the goal, the haptic feedback changes to the location of the ball so that the player can easily retrieve it.

Dribbling/Ball Control Training

FINISH START

Smart cones can be used for dribbling exercises to improve the players close ball control . The player becomes aware of the position of the cones through the haptic feedback.

FINAL RENDERS

CONNECTED FOOTBALL The football contains Low Energy Bluetooth technology to allow for the connection to the tracking pod and haptic vest. The technology is embedded in a rigid organic internal structure to ensure it doesn’t get damaged on impact.

MULTIFUNCTION SMART CONES The form of the product allows for blind players to easily turn the product on and off via a central braille button. The cone casing is made from rigid ABS and thermoplastic elastomer. Both materials allow for the product to be easily recycled after its service life.

TRACKING POD The main role of the tracking pod is to determine the positioning of the smart cones and football using Low Energy Bluetooth technology (BLE). The tracking pod then uses the real time data to create the haptic feedback through the vest. The tracking pod is also an intelligent performance reading device capable of measuring speed, acceleration and distance covered.

VOICE FEEDBACK

HAPTIC VEST The Haptic vest is embedded with numerous vibrating nodes placed 360 degrees around the lower abdomen of the user. As a player rotates, the feedback changes accordingly, giving constant real time feedback on the position of the obstacles and targets. Through using haptics rather than sound, the user can still hear the important rattling of the ball and sound feedback from their surroundings.

Speedboat concepts created using solidworks surfacing

This project was undertaken over the summer to broaden my CAD skills and to learn a new program, Solidworks.

SPEEDBOAT CONCEPTS

After completing a number of online tutorials, I then took the opportunity to apply my new skills by designing two new speedboat concepts. The projects focus was to create beautiful hull shapes that I could then surface model. The process also allowed me to practice my sketching and foam modelling skills.

SKETCHING IDEATION Initial concept renders

THE PROCESS

As a designer I love to work in foam to visualise and create beautiful 3D shapes. I wanted to create a hull shape that was both sporty, flowing and sleek. Having created the main shape I then developed variations of style to suit different conditions. One was designed for a more Mediterranean climate, and one more suited to British boating conditions.

SPEEDBOAT CONCEPTS The two speedboat concepts have been designed with sleek forms that give a sense of high speed and agility. With uninterupted lines that continously flow around the long extended sports hull, these boat encompass the perfect blend of beauty and performance.

An app designed to enhance live events at the O2 arena.

THE BRIEF

APP DESIGN

To design a new app aimed exclusively for O2 customers. The app must make use of new NFC technology in smart phones, as well as encourage brand loyalty to O2 in a similar way to the current O2 ‘priority’ scheme.

THE PROCESS 1

The first step was to decide which market the app was going to be aimed at and what it was to be used for. As a group it was decided that the app would be used to enhance live events at the O2 arena.

2

Sketching was used to capture initial ideas for screenshots. Low fidelity prototypes were then produced and tested to evaluate the apps interface with real users.

3

Screenshot renders were developed using photoshop and then made interactive through the use of Adobe flash software.

Renders were developed with the apps user interaction in mind. It was important that the final flash prototype felt seamless and intuitive.

LIVE. EXPERIENCE.

SCREENSHOT RENDERS

User enters their email and password. The user specific passwords are given to O2 customers when tickets are purchased.

Countdown timer till the day of the event.

Main homepage of the app

Each O2 customer would be given a login and password once they have booked their tickets.

The app’s full functionality can only be accessed two days before the event. If the user logs into the app before, they will be taken to a countdown page which states how long it will be until the app becomes fully active.

3

Two days before the event the app activates. Through using clear graphics, the main homepage has been developed to be simple and intuitive, specific to the event that the user is going to.

User can rewind or fast forward by dragging the wheel. Navigation layout for Event section User simply swipes to get to next track.

4

In the ‘Event’ section the user can find information and news about the artists as well as announcements from the artists themselves. Users are also able to listen to some of the artists latest tracks.

5

The music page allows the user to listen to some of the artists songs including ones not yet released. The user can shuffle, share, repeat or favourite any of the tracks.

Live schedule adjusts as the event happens.

6

The schedule section includes timings to the warm up events as well as the venues key timing information such as opening of bars and restricted areas.
