The Salvaged City-Castle Exterior Visualisation (AutoCAD, 3DS Max and Photoshop)

Introduction

A highly motivated individual with a passion for architecture. I have been committed to a career in architecture for several years and my enthusiasm towards my current studies is evident within my ongoing work. Over the past 3 years my work has developed quickly as I have explored different design philosophies. I am proud to have passed all three years of University with a first class mark and have had my final year project nominated for a RIBA President’s Medal.

Second Year project for a furniture maker’s workshop. The design echoes the forms of bent-wood furniture by curving around existing trees, sitting above the ground in a glu-lam monocoque. An overhead rail for heavy components and clamping posts for laminated and steamed wood integrate the production process into the fabric of the building. This second year project for a seedbank and gliding centre aimed to rejuvenate an ex-RAF base in North Lincolnshire. Exploring the idea of memory and the history of the site, the building developed as a series of objective and subjective spaces. An ETFE atrium allowed for a phenomenological exploration of sunlight and shadows, as plants would grow to block out the sunlight, and periodic sprays of water within aeroponic units would sweep back and forth.

Education

I have recently completed a BA (Hons) in Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part1) at the Lincoln School of Architecture. During my time there I successfully completed modules in Sustainable Design and Architectural History and Theory, as well as several design projects. My dissertation explored the theme of Utopia within the architecture of Late-Modernism. In my final year I also assisted a tutor to carry out first year critiques. My recent work has focussed upon the combination of vernacular morphologies and industrial processes. This follows a prevalent theme throughout my design work; the full integration of the processes of living or working within a proposed building fabric. My final year design project was awarded the Head of College Prize, for the successful execution of the most ambitious project within the department, and nominated for the RIBA President’s Bronze Medal.

Work Experience

University of Lincoln RIBA Exhibition - March 2012: During the periodical revalidation of the University’s architecture courses, I worked with a small team of staff and students on the preparation of an exhibition of past students’ work and the formatting of portfolios. As a second year student it was highly beneficial to receive such exposure to third year and postgraduate work. What I learnt during this 3 week period resulted in a new maturity to my work.

Aedas

- February 2010: One week of work experience within the Manchester office of a multi-national practice. This placement gave me a good impression of life within the profession. I was introduced to several computer programs, sat in on meetings and became familiar with the office’s current project.

Asda

- October 2009 to Present: Through my time at Asda, working on a seasonal contract, I have developed communication skills while working with members of the public. I am able to work independently without the need to be given instructions, instead taking the initiative to complete all required tasks.

Derek

Kitson Design - July 2007: Two weeks of work experience at a local Architectural Technologist. While there I worked in a small team on the preparation of domestic planning proposals, surveying sites and drawing up plans. During this time I worked through several AutoCAD tutorials, gaining a level of proficiency before beginning University.

The Salvaged City is the final year project that I produced, exploring the possible impacts of a shift to a post-oil infrastructure on society. Inspired in part by an experimental novel called “House of Leaves, the project utilised a deconstructed vernacular intended to be built from salvaged materials. The brief developed to include a bio-ethanol production plant to provide for the energy needs of a community housed within the ruins of Nottingham Castle. The spaces designed are utilitarian, with functionality prioritised. The project evolved to react to the challenges of the site topography and the limited material palate available with salvaged components. The spatial and environmental requirements of the bio-ethanol production process had to be combined with the architectural language that was developed and then applied to site.

I am experienced in using a number of computer programs including: -AutoCAD -3DS Max Design -Photoshop -Illustrator -InDesign -SketchUp -Core Microsoft Office Programs I also have some experience of ArchiCAD, external plug-in rendering packages, video editing in Adobe After Effects and Web Design in Adobe Dreamweaver. My hand drawings and sketches are of a good standard and I have made architectural models with a number of different materials.

Other Interests

As a member of the scouts until I began University, I completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and earned the Queen Scout Award. Outside of education I enjoy art, literature and music and I play the piano to a reasonable standard. I hold a full and clean UK driving licence.
