Drawings Illustrating the Form of the House on Ash Tree Lane
Modelling the Space
A series of drawings were undertaken based on the novel “House of Leaves. First the floorplans of the House on Ash Tree Lane were recreated and then developed into a 3D model. The network of tunnels and chambers underneath the house were modelled as voids and used to generate several drawings and a physical model. This was the starting point of the architectural language running through this project.
After recreating the floorplans of the house described in “House of Leaves, a 3D model was developed to represent the network of tunnels and chambers beneath the building. In order to show this as void space within the ground, a series of holes were laser cut through sheets of acrylic, which when stacked built up the house with its subterranean spaces.
The contrast between Common and Unusual Forms
The Four and a Half Minute Hallway
A scene from the book, “The Four and a Half Minute Hallway, was modelled as an animation with 72 hand drawn frames. The scene shows a door in an interior wall, the camera passes through a window to the outside to show the exterior wall, where there is no door. Returning inside the camera travels back to the door, which is opened to reveal a corridor passing into a space which if the film is to be believed, should not exist. Taking the animation frames and layering them up shows the house expanding and rotating. Domestically scaled building elements reveal themselves through the conflicting arrangement of lines.
