ABOUT US

6

1. Members of UNIT+

UNIT + is a multi-disciplinary group of creatives and skilled collaborators. The UNIT’s size fluctuates according to the specific needs of individual projects. At the groups centre is a team of London based designer who believe that through collaboration of expertise and examination of ideas, the quality of design can be enriched.

2. Topographic map of site

The first priority and nucleus of the project in the 1970s was the complex, which gave birth to the approaches and ideas of the “thought factory or creative lab”. UNIT + have shifted the focus away from the complex and on to the “thought factory and creative lab” to be the new nucleus of the project’s evolution.

4. Operazione Arcevia 1976 meeting

The original infrastructure for creativity – the “ritiro laico” (a place for reflection, silence and peace), a conference meeting room, exhibition space, a concert space, open air artistic activity and a series of study spaces used for research and artisan activity – is key to cultivating the thought factory.

6. Concept of the birth of the hub (Ico Parisi - 1976)

Now, the proposed cultural activities and workshops, the quality of the space and the nurturing creative environment that these create will enrich the reserve’s identity. Interventions such as ‘pop up’ studios - various shelters or items of furniture which will create/designate places to paint, write or simply dream – will mark the landscape. Together, these plans will encourage other practitioners - artists, architects, writers and conceptual performers crafts people other visitors - to come and interact with the site. The inclusion and partnership with these “beauty creators” is still at the heart of constructing this “thought factory”; this is not a utilitarian project based around ‘us’ but the beginnings of an open invitation for all to collaborate.

SURVEY AND PROPOSAL 14

8. UNIT+ surveying

In September 2012, five members of UNIT + journeyed to Riserva Privata San Settimio, at the invitation of the Bartoletti family. Over one week, they carried out survey work to document the area for future phases and to present some of the initial ideas gained from the experience of living on site. Through this dynamic engagement, using experiential and live mapping techniques across a range of different media (conceptual documentaries, sketches, models and a fairy tale inspired comic book), UNIT + presented a new colour-coded navigation system, the concept of open ‘air studios’, a proposal for a ‘floating’ meditation room and a towering sundial.

TOWERING SUNDIAL

9. Concept of towering sundial (UNIT+ 2012)

The brief created by the UNIT for the Sundial was to create a beacon, a landmark to identify the reserve within the greater hilled agricultural landscape, that celebrates the reserve and to make a statement, drawing in new interest and creativity. Its construction is restricted to using only material harvested within the reserve – hay bales, stone, timber and clay – so that the material quality is a direct articulation of the site.

FLOATING MEDITATION ROOM

11. Sketch model of floating meditation room (UNIT+ 2012)

The meditation room is influenced by one of Bartoletti’s descendants, Nicolo, who practises crystal and bell therapies. The platform that floats on the water rises and falls according to the seasonal water collection. The structure itself is a 7 pillared supported triangular pavilion (symbolising the 7 chakras), which can be completely opened to the outside through a shuttered façade. This allows complete connection to the outside world while still responding to the particular climate and weather of the day.

OPEN AIR STUDIO

13. Landscape in the reserve

Through the creation of objects such as pieces of furniture and forms of shelter, locations in the reserve will be redefined as destinations and, as these material interventions will suggest, become designated for particular types of activity.

TREE MAPPING

22

15. 1:1 Test of tree mapping (UNIT+ 2012)

It is common for people to become lost in the vastness of the reserve. Currently, visitors must call the park keeper and wait to be found. The proposed coloured navigation system is uses specific coloured material tied to trees to designate particular ‘zones’, which, in turn, aids navigation back to the centre of the reserve.
