INTRODUCTION:

In January 2012 me and a group of alumni formed UNIT+, a small design practice based in London. We got together to work on Operazione Arcevia 2.0. A project based in Arcevia, in the Marche region, in Italy. Operazione Arcevia 2.0 looks at reviving the principles of the original Operazione Arcevia, that was created in the early 1970s by Ico Parisi and Italo Bartoletti, in creating an artistic and cultural hub in Arcevia. Our focus is on the private reserve of our clients, Riserva Privata San Settimio owned the Bartoletti family, that housed the original Operazione Arcevia. By engaging with this project we were invited in september 2012 to survey the area in order to make appropriate decisions for the future designs. After the first encounter, I proposed to Studio 3 tutors Sandra Denicke-Polcher and Torange Khonsari to initiate a project, attached to Operazione Arcevia 2.0, but based in the closest town to our client’s reserve, Palazzo D’Arcevia.

LIVE Palazzo My live Project with studio 3 is based in Palazzo D’Arcevia, a hill town in the centre of Italy in the Marche Region. Palazzo D’Arcevia is in the council of Arcevia, it was buit in the later XIII century, even tough first settlements date two hundred years prior. The town today has 12 permanent residents with a capacity of holding 300. The decline in the population occurred in the second half of the XX century when the local sulphur mine closed. Palazzo D’Arcevia initially had 3 towers, upon expansion in the late medieval times it double its amount, on top of having also a bell tower. In the years the town has lost all of the towers apart from two, the entrance tower and the bell tower. My live project looks at revitilizing the town through the boosting of identity. The three projects I have undertaken, two of which have been constructed, feed on the encounters with the locals and the history of the town.

The first project for my strategy LIVE Palazzo was built in April 2013, it is an installation which acts on the entire urban frame of Palazzo D’Arcevia. It looks at boosting tourism by highlighting the past and the present of Palazzo D’Arcevia. It is composed of a shrine (connected to the local landscape) which has a poetry by a resident about Palazzo, a series of panels (which connect to the local coats of arms) with sections of the poetry written on them and scattered around the town; and words temporarily spray painted on the ground in the 3 main squares of the town, which represent the past uses of the squares. The shrine and the panels are made out of marine ply produced locally. Later varnished and painted to resist the weather. The shrine has a vynil adhesive on the front whereas the panels have the letters stenciled on the front. The shrine is selfstanding, the panels are hanged on the town walls.

Palazzo é lì pronto a proteggere, pronto a salvare, disponibile a interrompere i sogni angoscianti a consolare i risvegli increduli.

Palazzo deserves poetry because Palazzo is able to match the states of the gaze of those who admire it because the viewer Palazzo find there the mirror of all the nuances of one’s feelings. Just go on the road in front, that which comes from Arcevia, and now Palazzo is firmly planted in the rock solid, indestructible, resistant and the viewer receives security, grounding, reliability and trust. If the viewer takes a step forward on the road Palazzo’s attitude change, now it seems happily clinging to the mountain on which it stands, who was afraid of losing you will not lose anymore, who was afraid of getting lost does not stray anymore, who was afraid of sinking does not sink anymore. Palazzo is ready to protect them, ready to save, available to stop the distressing dreams to console awakenings disbelief. If the viewer along another piece of that road Palace suddenly hovers in the air, loses consistency, is mixed with only the sky with clouds, the wind, becomes light, very light, it rises and flies into the light and invites the viewer to fly with him, imagine with him, to invent him. If those who follow that road lingers waiting for the night Palazzo turns into a crib teeming with lights and shadows, shapes and contours and gives you back the whole life and mysterious courage, happiness and bliss. 7

Pavillion The second project was ideated with UNIT+ as a collaboration. It is an evolution of a proposal envisioned during the first survey of the site in september 2012: the open air studio. The open air studio was a concept of placing furniture in the landscape in order to define a space for thinking, the pavillion merges with the landscape, to not affect it. It is constructed by 170 recycled palletts of various dimensions. It is constructed in the reserve along side the biggest lake. It faces the sunrise to create the appropriate feeling of integration with the territory. It is intended to be a solitary place to think and admire the surrounding.

The final project is the proposal for a space outside the bounduaries of the old town where old practices are revived, in particular, the art of sculpting. Arcevia has always been wuite active in breeding artists but who is remembered today is a sculptor: Edgardo Mannucci, for which they have an annual prize which is accliamed in the Italian sculpture world. The site currently houses a unused school building programmed for demolition due to new heathquake regulations and for disuse. It is at the moment property of the council yet on sale for ₏180.000. The building was built by Italo Bartoletti (Operazione Arcevia initiator and grandfather of our client) to house the local elementary school. The school ran until 2006 when it closed for lack of students. 1. Plan of Palazzo D’Arcevia with school highlighted 2. Birds eye view of school 3. Council map of school

In my design I tried to find elements of the urban frame that were fitting and those who weren’t. I tried to find integration with the surrounding in both design choices and material choices. These three diagrams explain the process to define the plan of the proposal. Studies of the urban frame and of the views define the permanent structure, were-as functionality defines the temporary. The tower in my proposal is a clear reference to the lost towers in the town and it frames the only existing tower of protection of Palazzo D’Arcevia. In order to create a connection with the town and the proposal I propose an extention of the existing main square made of the same material.
