Business is about timing, being in the right place and doing something about it. Business is about leadership of the team not just being leader. Business is about finding courage to pursue your vision and creative instincts. Business is attitude to execute the vision, plans and strategies of a goal.

Happiness and success are achieved more easily when you are invested in activities and pursuits that challenge, inspire and reward. Hence the ‘follow your passion’ mindset; create meaning and purpose in business and life. First we think, then plan, take actions, get a result to measure, review the outcome, refine and go again. Business Mindset The major factor in shaping outcomes and creating success is attitude and mindset. The power of the mind to achieve or believe is ‘mind over matter’. Remember as a child being encouraged by the phrase – if you put your mind to it you can achieve it. And the plea to a Nation - Yes we can. The belief and attitude for a desire to achieve, is a powerful energy force. Success in the face of adversity and winning against all odds is pure mindset.

Mindsets can fall into two basic categories. People with fixed mindset and attitudes believe you are only as smart as your inherent or developed talent and skills and you live with what you’ve got. For this mindset, failure is a big issue where any slight setback sabotages tasks easily achieved and where issues fall apart quickly and are slow in recovery. In business, this could be losing sales to competitors, customer rejection or general fear of failure in changed markets and economic conditions.

Whereas a growth mindset does not harbour a fear of failure and is not limited by qualification or given skill set. This group have an attitude of persistence and ability to overcome obstacles and setbacks, more interested to discover why they had failed rather than failure itself. Failure or poor outcomes are errors of insufficient effort so let’s try again.

Goals Mindset When I relocated to Queensland from Gippsland’s winter chills and purchased a sailboat to live aboard, I had no knowledge of marine matters or sailing. Family and friends thought the idea was folly and a bad business move to establish a marine engineering business. Winning Brisbane, Gladstone and Hamilton Island Race Week three years later and achieving Queensland Government Ship Builders Accreditation were success of sorts. Failure and feeling limited by competitor’s reputations and histories never constrained a vision and goal to win. Mistakes were plenty with rudder designs that broke, mishandled sails destroyed and early racing moments of sailing in the wrong direction. When you believe you won’t achieve, you will be right. A growth mindset with vision and goals works best for success.

HOW TO HAVE THE RIGHT MINDSET TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS

Mindset is a choice. You can be as happy or depressed, or as excited as you decide to be. It helps if you decide to have a happy, positive and motivational attitude. In business, a positive attitude will benefit at least three major areas; you, your staff and your customers.

You spend most of your life (or so it seems) working in your business. If you are motivated and positive, you’ll always find ways to enjoy it each day. You’ll approach everything with an ‘opportunity’ mindset and not a ‘missing out’ mindset. I guarantee you will make better decisions. Be assured; good decisions will never come from a bad mindset.

The right mindset will also ensure you attract and retain the best staff. Your staff will also be more inclined to bring mistakes and issues to you if you have a positive can-do/ can-fix attitude. So you’ll find out problems faster and be in a better position to make better decisions.

You’ll attract the right customers. You know the difference between good and bad customers, so I don’t need to explain that. With the right mindset, you will most certainly attract the customers you want. Elevate your business and bring a level of service that enables you to have exceptionally happy clients. Happy clients lead to more referrals and positive feedback into the community, and in turn generates more business and attracts more of the ‘perfect’ client. The following list can help you to develop (and keep) the right mindset.

1. GET THE BEST INFORMATION ONLY Find the very best information in your field. Then focus on learning this information. One of the most critical personal skills today is not to find information, but to select the best information, avoiding the rest.

2. ROLE MODEL THE BEST PEOPLE Look for the best people in your field and try to model what they did right. Adopt their kind of thinking and mindset.

3. EXAMINE YOUR CURRENT BELIEFS Examine your current belief system. Are these beliefs supporting you? Or are they self-limiting? You have to identify those possible blocks and turn them around. Because whether you know about limiting beliefs or not, they are working in your subconscious mind.

4. SHAPE YOUR MINDSET WITH VISION AND GOALS A proactive approach to building your mindset is to see where you want to go. Seeing a vision, images describing your result clearly in your mind’s eye, will create a strong pull towards this result. Then go on and shape your vision into goals. It will shape your mindset to conform to your vision.

5. PROTECT YOUR MINDSET One thing you have to do is to protect your mindset against the naysayers and people who want to drag you down. Keeping your confidence is a big thing. Stay on the right path, look to improve yourself and help others along the way.
