Many people are unsure of what a psychologist actually does, how they differ from psychiatrists, and when it might be beneficial to consult one. Psychologists are trained in the science of human behaviour and must be registered by the Psychology Board of Australia. They occupy the professional space between psychiatrists, who possess medical qualifications and can prescribe medication, and counselors, whose training tends to be less scientifically grounded and are not governed by a regulatory board.

Individuals consult psychologists for many reasons; ongoing management of chronic mental health issues, managing short term difficulties, personal development and optimising life experience. If you have concerns about your thoughts, emotions or behaviour, or others have expressed concerns, it may be time to consult a psychologist. Alternatively, the desire to enjoy life more, break bad habits, improve the quality of relationships or to maximize professional performance are other reasons to consult a psychologist.
Many are unsure about what happens during a consultation. In essence, you and your psychologist explore the issues that are of concern to you, discuss the outcomes that you would like to achieve, and, most importantly, identify the personal attributes, social supports and other resources that are available to you to assist you to work towards those outcomes.
Whether it’s overcoming difficult situations, or striving for improvement in thought, feeling, or enjoyment of life, a psychologist can assist by being a confidential and objective listener and offer practical and achievable solutions. A brief therapeutic intervention may be all it takes to provide clarity and to refocus life. ca
