FROM THE QUEENSLAND SMALL BUSINESS COMMISSIONER

BY DOMINIQUE LAMB

YOUR BUSINESS MATTERS: accessing support and advocacy

As the Queensland Small Business Commissioner, I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share how our office can support you in your small business journey. My path started in a rather unconventional way—dressed as a clown handing out flyers. Since then, I’ve grown into a role where I can help small businesses thrive, drawing from my experience as a construction lawyer in Sydney and then as the Chief Executive Officer for National Retail Australia.

One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned during my career is the importance of communication. When faced with challenges, I find it’s essential to pick up the phone and discuss the situation directly. Whether the news is good or bad, having someone to talk to can make all the difference.

Dominique Lamb, QLD Small Business Comissioner

At the Queensland Small Business Commissioner’s (QSBC) office, we believe that every business deserves access to clear guidance and support.

At QSBC, our mission is simple: to enhance the operating environment for the more than 482,000 small businesses across Queensland and reduce the time and costs of resolving disputes involving small business. Our assistance team is here for you, ready to take your calls and offer support on a range of issues. Whether you’re facing a dispute involving your commercial lease or with another business, we’re here to help you navigate the path to a better outcome.

Recently, we’ve noticed a significant increase in calls to our assistance line—about a 54% uptick, particularly regarding business-to-business debt claims. It’s a crucial reminder that cash flow is king for small businesses. Proactively managing payments can significantly impact your financial health, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.

Monitoring your financial health is so important, and understanding key metrics like your profit margin and payroll costs can help you make informed decisions. We encourage you to explore our ‘Beyond the Pandemic’ report on our website, which provides valuable benchmarks on these ratios. If you’re experiencing financial hardship and need support, remember that free financial counselling is available through the Queensland Government. You can connect with a counsellor without any complicated applications—give us a call.

In addition to our assistance team, we have a strategy and engagement team dedicated to advocating for better outcomes for small businesses. We engage with government across all departments and at all levels, with peak bodies and industries, to understand your concerns, needs, and aspirations. We also work with local councils through our Small Business Friendly Program to help provide the opportunities small businesses need to thrive.

Starting and running a business is a brave endeavour; you don’t have to face it alone. Seeking help early, especially for financial or compliance issues, can set you on the right path. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, numerous resources are available to alleviate some of the pressure you may feel.

Don’t forget to check what your local government is offering. Many councils provide free support, information, and even grants to help your business thrive. For instance, the Sunshine Coast’s ‘Level Up’ initiative is designed to help you learn, connect, and build your business.

Remember, we’re here to listen and assist you. No issue is too big or too small—your business matters. Together, we can navigate the challenges ahead.
