Dear Readers of Matters Magazine,

I want to take this opportunity to speak directly to you, especially those of you who are part of the small family business community here on the Sunshine Coast.

I know the challenges, risks, and rewards of running a family business. My family has been there—from running a restaurant and fruit shops in Caloundra to managing a gallery in Mooloolaba—and we’ve experienced the ups and downs of being your own boss.

Family businesses truly underpin the economy here on the Sunshine Coast. Our local economy thrives because of people like you—the small business owners who pour their heart and soul into making their dream a reality. Our unique lifestyle and location lend themselves to that entrepreneurial spirit, where couples and even intergenerational family members work together to create something special. Owning a business is more than just a job—it’s about orchestrating your future and creating the lifestyle you want for your family. I know it’s a dream for many, yet it’s a dream that takes incredible courage to pursue.

And I know how tough it can be. It doesn’t always go according to your beautiful grand plan, as I’ve experienced firsthand. When my family’s business didn’t work out, it was earth-shattering. We lost our home and everything we had worked for, and we had to move in with family to regroup. That was one of the hardest moments of my life, but it gave me a deep understanding of the struggles so many small business owners face. I understand the courage you need to start a business, the tenacity you need to go on every single day, day after day, because you believe in something.

Now, as your Mayor, I can use my own experiences to shape policies and decisions that support you and make a difference in your daily lives. My goal is to ensure that our local government is right there beside you, helping you through the tough times and celebrating your successes.

We have several initiatives to support small businesses on the Coast, such as the Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS, the Small Business Friendly Program, and the Local Business Support Program. These initiatives offer resources, tools, networking, and one-to-one tailored support. I encourage you to contact our Economic Development Team and take advantage of these programs. We want to see you thrive.

Running a business can sometimes feel overwhelming, and I know that feeling too well. There were times when I would ask myself, “How will I keep going here? What am I doing?” And that’s when I would say to myself: Left foot. Right foot. Breathe It’s a simple mantra, but sometimes it’s all you need to get through that moment, that hour, or that day. It can help you find the strength to keep going and stay hopeful about what’s coming next.

For me, maintaining balance is also essential. I prioritise exercising every day — I go for a walk with my beautiful cavoodle, which keeps me grounded. After that, I take a hot shower, and then I turn it to ice cold. As I stand in the cold water, I say to myself, I can do anything, and I can do hard things. That daily ritual helps me face whatever challenges come my way. And every day, I am thankful for the many blessings in my life.

I want to leave you with this: running a business is hard work and incredibly rewarding. There will be setbacks and moments of doubt. When things aren’t exactly going my way, I say, “If this is the worst thing that happens today, it’s still a pretty good day!”

Remember, you are not alone. You have resources, programs, and people ready to support you. Don’t hesitate to reach out, lean on your community, and know we’re here to help.

I believe in the power of small businesses to shape the future of the Sunshine Coast. With courage, persistence, and a belief in yourself, there’s always a way forward, no matter how tough things get. The future for small businesses on the Coast is bright, and I am honoured to be on this journey with you.

Warm regards,

Rosanna Natoli // Mayor of the Sunshine Coast mayor@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
