The truth is that the last three months haven’t been easy. Losing Mum has turned out to be the single hardest event of my entire life. I thought that was losing Dad, but honestly now having no parents feels different to how I had ever imagined it would feel. So, to any of you out there who have lost both your parents, I salute you and honour you, and feel your pain. And to those of you who still have your parents or even a parent, make sure you maximise each and every moment.

EDITOR'S NOTE

I guess this incident has brought forth my own thoughts about my mortality and the real truth about life and how much of it I may actually have left to live. The thing is, I DON’T WANT TO LIVE THIS LIFE AT THIS WEIGHT ANOTHER SECOND. I really, really don’t. If you have been reading this magazine for a while you will know my weight struggle and if you haven’t, I can share it with you in a few short words. I am currently around 30 kilos overweight. I have been up to 60 kilos overweight, so I am definitely in a better place right now than I was. But here’s the TRUTH – 2019 is absolutely D-DAY. 2019 is absolutely the END of the line. No more excuses, no more overeating, no more – it’s the law. Magic said something the other day which made me laugh, but at the same time, I just loved it. He said, “We have to stop being fat”! Yup, when we met each other we were both hot like a sunrise, both at our ideal weights. What happened? Life, partying, having fun, too much social stuff, too much alcohol, too much yummy food. I simply stopped saying ‘no’ and simply started saying ‘yes’. Yes to food, yes to alcohol, yes to everything that wasn’t doing me any good whatsoever. This issue of the magazine is our TRANSFORMATION ISSUE and guess what, I’m on the ride of my life and I would love for you to be by my side. “Heard it,” I hear you say, and believe me I have said it and heard it over and over myself, so what’s different now? Good question and here’s the answer. What’s different now is that I have seen how important my health is to both myself and Magic and our mortality. What’s different now is that next year, 2020, I turn 60. What the! Can that even be true? I don’t feel a day over fabulous – hee hee! And Magic turns 50 (yep, I have a toy boy, yee-haw). I am grateful for him each and every day and he makes me laugh out loud every single day . But honestly, we can’t be 50 and 60 and fat, we just can’t - so transformation it is. LOOK OUT, this journey is so exciting. I can honestly, hand on heart tell you that this TRANSFORMATION is ABSOLUTE. I can honestly tell you, hand on heart that without a shadow of a doubt this is happening.

TRANSFORMATION is a done deal!

What do you want to transform in your life? No matter what it is, I promise you that this issue is ABSOLUTELY filled with INSPIRATION to help you SUCCEED. What is that you truly want for yourself that, like me, you keep on saying you want and keep on failing at and, like me, keep on giving up. Guess what, if we just keep giving up, there is only one sure outcome and that’s failure. But if we keep GETTING up then we still have a chance, we still have an OPPORTUNITY, we still have a POSSIBILITY for SUCCESS. My goal, my intention, my purpose through the pages of this magazine is to INSPIRE myself and to INSPIRE YOU to step up and into the BEST VERSION OF US THAT WE CAN BE.

YOUR LIFE, YOUR BODY, YOUR FITNESS, YOUR WEALTH, YOUR HEALTH, YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR RELATIONSHIP/S, YOUR WORLD!

Transformation is one of those words that we think exists OUT THERE. This article is all about how I personally believe that TRANSFORMATION in EVERY SINGLE area of our lives is possible and that it starts and ends inside of US. We often think that our problems are OUT THERE, that they exist outside of us, but I personally believe every problem ONLY actually exists in our HEADS. So, if you are looking for transformation in: Your BUSINESS Your LIFE Your RELATIONSHIP Your BODY Your FITNESS Your HEALTH Your WEALTH Or Your (insert YOUR ‘I want’ TRANSFORMATION here) Then keep reading because this article could quite possibly be the bee’s knees for you and for me. I have pretty much transformed my business, my relationships, friendships and my mindset over the last five years, and I feel very privileged to be able to share some of my transformational tips with you.

Before we begin, I want to start by saying I am in no way any better than anyone else on the planet. I truly believe that we are all the same at our core; no matter what luck you have had bestowed upon you, or not, we are actually, in essence, all the exact same. I truly believe that. You, me, us, we are one. If there is something you don’t like about me, it’s probably something you don’t like about yourself; if there’s something I don’t like about you, then it’s probably something I don’t like about me. I’ve learnt over the years that at our core we all want one thing; we all want to be happy. That means something different to all of us. What it takes for some to be happy is only just getting by; for others it’s a certain bank account, a certain number on the scales, a certain clothes size, a certain number of people in their team, a certain house, a certain suburb, a certain job, a certain business, a certain group of friends, or something completely different to anything listed here.

For some happiness is about family; for others, it’s about friendship, relationships. WHAT IS IT FOR YOU? Have a think about it. What is it really? Are you trying so hard to keep up with the Joneses that you’ve convinced yourself you’ll be happy when you do? Guess what, you won’t. I’ve found that wherever I go, I AM, so I am pretty sure you will find that where ever you go, YOU ARE, TOO. You can’t escape you, that’s why some people move houses, cities, countries and still find themselves in the same situations, still find themselves UNHAPPY; this is absolute evidence that it is NEVER things that make us happy, it is NEVER anything outside of ourselves. www.mattersmagazine.com.au 7

TRANSFORMATION

TRANSFORM

TRANSFORMATION

It’s never the situation, it’s always what we make the situation mean, TO US. The one thing I know for sure is that I don’t know everything for sure. And another thing I know for sure is that while we are all exactly the same, we are equally all very, very different. Anyway, I guess what I am saying is I am definitely no better than anyone else, I now actually don’t care what you think about me. That may sound a little callous and maybe you don’t even believe me, but it is the absolute TRUTH. I don’t mean for it to sound conceited or arrogant, but the truth is that when we stop caring about what other people think of us or our work or our bodies or our anything, we can stop and have a look at what we REALLY THINK. We can transform into our AUTHENTIC SELVES. It’s then when we are being TRUE, it’s then that we are being REAL, that we begin to see that HAPPINESS REALLY DOES BEGIN AND END WITH WHAT WE THINK ABOUT OURSELVES and what we make everything mean.

When we love ourselves, when we truly believe in ourselves, when we absolutely 100 per cent do what we do for ourselves - and not because of what someone else will think or not think about us - that’s when we can start living our authentic truth, our authentic life and believe me, that’s when we can be fully transformed.

Will you? For example, if you want to lose weight. Please step in now Vickie Magic! Then what if every night you were to write down what you were going to eat tomorrow and get someone (step in husband Dranko Magic and daughter Ashleigh Allan) to sign off on your list. You commit 1000 per cent and the consequence of a detour in your commitment is as per the above (or you negotiate with your accountability buddy what your consequence will be). It’s interesting don’t you think that we sometimes make commitment after commitment to ourselves and break it over and over but when we FULLY commit, in writing to someone else, and put in place a DIRE consequence, then BING BANG BOO, you really can suddenly stick to your plan. You really can begin the TRANSFORMATION you are after in any area of your life. Oh, and by the way, once you do this you will actually see that you are COMPLETELY FREE, free from spontaneous eating. You are free to just enjoy life because the weight loss just takes care of itself. (See more transformation ‘how-to’ on pages 80 to 83 of this magazine)

CREATE AND PRACTICE SUCCESSFUL HABITS This sounds so, so simple, so what do you want to TRANSFORM? Think of someone, anyone that has transformed that. List 10 things they did to do that? 1 2

I know how to transform my body, too. I’ve said year after year for the last ten years that THIS IS MY YEAR and it hasn’t been, but this YEAR will be - and let me tell you why.

3

Let me tell you HOW...

5

See, I am writing this article as much for myself as I am for you.

6

I hope you get something from it, but it’s a plan for me to TRANSFORM me, too.

7

I have finally taught myself that if I truly want something bad enough, then I MUST be prepared to TRANSFORM my habits to ensure success.

9

BUT HOW?

Get a highlighter and decide which two of the things listed above you will do to transform the first thing you want to transform. Then make a commitment as per number one to the same person, in writing that you will practice these habits every single day until you reach the TRANSFORMATION you are after.

Good question! Well, firstly it must start with commitment. How many times have you thought you wanted to transform something, be it your business, relationship, friendship, body or fitness? You want it as you’ve never wanted anything but, when it comes to really COMMITTING to it, you can’t. That’s like me with giving in to cookies! You keep saying, ‘Not now’, ‘Yes but’. You want it, but you’re not prepared to go all in, you just keep on making up excuses, reasons for NOT NOW and NOT NOW comes back tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. And we all know that TOMORROW NEVER COMES. So, rule number one: COMMIT FULLY What do you want to transform in your life? Decide right here and right now to COMMIT FULLY. What does that mean? It means that you need to decide right here and right now to negotiate no more and COMMIT FULLY. Decide right here and right now that you will do what you say you will do – 1000 per cent! It’s NOT NEGOTIABLE! It’s as if I asked you to COMMIT FULLY or the alternative was to never see your child or loved one EVER AGAIN; if you don’t honour your commitment, the consequences are absolutely DIRE. I’m talking about THAT level of commitment; can you commit to that level?

4

8

10

GRATITUDE in advance This one is so, so, so simple and yet we often don’t do it. So here goes, be grateful in advance each and every day for what’s coming your way. Think about the area of transformation you want for yourself. Now… See it (as though it has happened) Feel it (as though it has happened) Hear it (as though it has happened. Who said what? Hear their voices) Experience it (as though it has happened) Lean into the experience, elevate the level of realness to see it, hear it, feel it, feel the joy, feel the pride. Now be so, so, so, so grateful that you achieved this, grateful in advance for what’s coming your way.

8 ISSUE 91

Gratitude changes everything. When we begin to PRACTICE looking for what’s right, we actually end up finding ourselves just automatically looking all around us for WHAT’S RIGHT, instead of what’s wrong, which is actually the normal go-to for our minds. Did you know that our minds are actually four times more wired to what’s wrong? FOUR TIMES! So, if we want to change our wiring to be more positive and to be more grateful and to look more at what’s good so that we can have more JOY, then it starts with practising over and over and over looking for what’s right. Do it now. Think about the last time you really stopped and focused on what you love. Focused on what’s good. Focused on what you want. Focused on what you have. Focused on all the things that are going RIGHT.

As humans, we normally focus on what we hate, what’s bad, what we don’t want and what we don’t have. Guess what by doing that we are giving that our attention. And we all know that … WHAT YOU FOCUS ON GROWS. So why on earth would we focus on WHAT WE DON’T WANT? Who knows, but as humans we constantly do. Remember that practice makes PERMANENT, so if we practice what we don’t want, and make that a habit, then that is what we will PERMANENT. We have to keep practising what we DO WANT. So, make a pact with me and with you to practice and practice and practice focusing on: What you love What’s good What you want What you already have And what you are grateful for And what you want more of… And the result will be TRANSFORMATIONAL. f (See pages 80 to 83 of this magazine for a hands-on step-by-step guide to empower you to make TRANSFORMATION POSSIBLE in your life)

OPPORTUNITY MATTERS

GROWING GAINS

I know that everyone deserves the opportunity to find meaningful employment. I also know that great employees have the power to transform a business.

work. From the day Brianna started work for Andrew, he was thrilled with her attitude and work ethic; he said she exceeded all expectations. Brianna shows up on time every day in her uniform with a big smile, and that is an important quality to Andrew and his business.

How do I know this? I lead a team of dedicated employment consultants who support people with disabilities or barriers to work to find jobs they love.

These opportunities are not just about giving someone a job; it’s about giving people a place where they can grow. Andrew and Elise have big plans for Brianna; they are taking the time to train her and build her confidence in the job before giving her more responsibility. To them, she is an investment.

Andrew Nankivell of Pink Ribbon Maids said his number one piece of advice to other business owners is if you’re willing to put the time and effort into a person, you will see results. I couldn’t agree more. Andrew and his wife, Elise, had been looking for a new employee for their small business. He knew of some great workers in his industry who had been hired through a Disability Employment Service, so he thought it might work for him, too. And it did. It is my strong belief that with the right support, there is no limit to what people with disabilities can achieve. Brianna Grice’s disability made getting qualifications a challenge, and she wasn’t sure if she would be able to overcome this barrier. Fast forward to today and Brianna has a Certificate III in Community Care, a Blue Card and a First Aid Certificate. Getting these qualifications was a huge win for Brianna, and she was keen to find somewhere she could make use of her training. Brianna is excited to have found a job that is meaningful to her. She cleans the homes of people with disabilities and elderly people and does free cleaning for people with cancer who have just come home from hospital. It makes her happy to know she is helping people. Most people leading a company will agree that a great employee is not just defined by the work they do; it’s also about their approach to the

And we do because they are professionals, right? But what if the advice is wrong? Worst still, what if you were the professional who gave the advice, somebody followed your advice and suffered financial loss or bodily injury because of it? Fortunately, there is professional indemnity insurance.

So, what is professional indemnity insurance? Professional indemnity insurance is designed to protect a professional against claims that may arise from an act, omission or breach of professional duty that causes financial loss or bodily injury to a third party. A comprehensive professional indemnity insurance product will give you this protection, helping you cover the legal costs and claims of compensation by the third party. It is important to realise that not all policies respond the same way, and what works for one business may not be the correct set-up for your business. As most people can appreciate, there are many options and misconceptions in the community about different insurances; it can seem like a minefield. A good example of this is a common exclusion relating to any party on a project going into administration. This can mean your policy won’t respond, even if you have nothing to do with them personally. Another common situation is when some bodily injury or property damage happens due to someone’s advice; this is often excluded

as well. An example of this is someone saying something is safe, but then someone is hurt by it.

The most important part of the professional indemnity policy is the business description. This must include any activities that the business is doing now, as well as what they have done in the past. This includes things done in prior insurance periods as claims can take time to show. Take an architect who designs a house; it may be years before the house falls down due to the design, so the architect needs to be continually insured as an architect. Just like an accountant or lawyer who provides you with professional advice, based on years of training and experience, a qualified insurance adviser can help guide you and your business. When arranging insurance, many people don’t seek out advice or fully understand the details of their policy and can, unfortunately, be underinsured or not insured in their time of need. An insurance broker can give you the advice to make sure you have the right cover for your unique business needs. An adviser will help you assess your business risks and exposures and source the market for a policy that will offer the best cover and value, saving you time, effort and stress and allowing you to focus on what is important to you. m www.awesoinsurance.com.au

DIGITALLY TRANSFORMING?

We are always talking about technology transforming at a fast pace that is hard to keep up with but what businesses need to know and understand is how new technology can transform their business in a positive and productive way.

In the last year, I have seen AI (Artificial Intelligence) come into its own in the business space, with virtual assistants like Google and Siri becoming the norm. There is a big focus on data analytics and that is driving changes in many areas, such as manufacturing, healthcare, smart cities and much more. You need to ask yourself how the data your business collates can benefit your company.

Staying connected with your IT business partner will keep your business moving forward with the latest technology by implementing new systems gradually, so the new technology will engage and excite your employees rather than cause change fatigue.

Technology will always be transforming; it’s how the company and staff culture will lead its development into the business which will determine its success and benefits to the business. m www.secureaccess.com.au

The adoption of the latest hardware and software can transform your business in leaps and bounds, but the technology must be embraced by your employees or your company will find it challenging to bring onboard new technology.

IS THE WRONG TYPE OF TRAINING MAKING YOU FATTER?

TRANSFORMING INTO A HIGH PERFORMING BUSINESS

All that slogging it out, pounding the pavement and doing endless kilometres on the treadmill could be increasing your waistline rather than decreasing it!

An engine is made up of many parts, working together to make the machine run smoothly and efficiently, right? You’ve probably heard that people are the engine of business.

SO WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN AND WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?

How do some get the people in their businesses to run smoothly and efficiently and others don’t? We believe the difference is an HR framework which has five linked and critical stages:

Exercise is a stress on the body; when the body is under exercise stress, we all produce cortisol, a hormone released by the outer portion or cortex of the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys. This is a great hormone in small doses but, when we release too much of it, cortisol can contribute greatly to belly fat storage around the naval, as there are more cortisol receptor sites in this area. The secret is to train right to balance this hormone and not release too much of it. Want to learn more from the expert personal trainers at Anytime Fitness Currimundi? Get in touch today! ca

• Plan and measure results • Develop systems and processes to simplify and ensure clear expectations for each role • Regularly review risks • Have a performance framework to highlight issues and address them • Continuously look to improve teamwork, processes and client services People management isn’t easy; in fact, it is one of the most complained about topics from business owners and managers. However, with this HR framework, it can be improved. Managers are responsible for the culture of their teams, so transformation starts there and must be supported from the top. THREE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR ACCOUNTANT Happy New Year and I hope 2019 will be your BEST yet. There is a common misconception that accountants just process the BAS and your year-end tax returns – BORING! Your accountant can do so much more to help you grow your business – revenue, profit, cash flow, asset protection and tax minimisation to name a few. Here are three questions to ask your accountant: 1. What is my break-even point? What does my revenue have to be daily/ weekly/monthly to cover my costs? 2. What drives my revenue? Should I focus on getting new customers or selling more to my existing customers? 3. Are my financial results good, bad or indifferent? How do I compare to other businesses? If you don’t have the answers, or you’re not sure where to start, your accountant can help you focus on the right areas, so you get some ‘quick wins’ on the board to kickstart 2019. Not only will you grow your business’s bottom line, but you will also increase the value of your business. ca Brilliance for Business Ph 07 5437 7624 Email melissa@brillianceforbusiness.com.au

CONCEPT TO CREATION Do you find yourself having great ideas but having trouble realising them? Well, with photography, printing and framing, we can help. It’s important to understand the technical workings of our craft. This enables us to make the right decisions when it comes to materialising a concept. As with most things creative, there is a fundamental technical understanding that is essential. With the right set of skills, a concept can be created in the real world. Let’s focus on printing for a moment. Having the ability to get the best potential out of any image (photographs, artworks) will also transform any space in which that image is displayed. Choosing the right size, medium and so on for the right wall is important. The right decision can exponentially enhance the environment and, to the contrary, the wrong choice could create an uneasy feeling. Imagine - Capture - Create. At Korsos Photography, we can help you with creating your ideas. ca

CYBERCRIME

HOLIDAY HANGOVER

We all know data is valuable but all too often, we act as if it isn’t. Other valuables are usually secured, by being kept in safes, insured and treated with care. With valuable business and personal data moving around the internet all the time, criminals are always looking for new ways to steal, copy and subvert this precious new resource.

Christmas spending is often compared to a delayed hangover: for the first couple of weeks after Christmas, life is good. Soon bills start arriving and your Christmas debt hangover hits like a freight train. Now that the damage is done, how do you cure a Christmas debt hangover?

So, how can we protect against cybercrime? Reports propose numerous measures including: • Uniform implementation of basic security measures like regular software updates and patches. • Increased international law enforcement cooperation. • Tougher cybersecurity laws in several countries. • Penalties for nations that harbour cybercriminals. If you handle a lot of data, or have concerns about security, then consider a managed security service. This will take the responsibility out of your hands and place it into those of an expert team with state-ofthe-art technology to keep your business’s precious data safe. ca iT Sales and Services Ph 07 5551 6070 Email adrian@itsas.com Web www.itsalesandservices.com.au

First, determine exactly how much you’ve spent to get a clearer idea of how much you owe. Make a list of all your debts, including who you owe money to, how much, and the due dates. Consider prioritising those with higher fees/ interest and paying them down first. It’s impossible to turn back the clock but it’s not too late to commit to reducing your debt come next Christmas. So, think about putting away a little each week towards Christmas 2019. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when your mountain of debt isn’t reducing as quickly as you’d like. If you need more help or want to consolidate your debts, contact a qualified mortgage broker or financial adviser. ca Astute Financial Management Pty Ltd Ph 0414 789 665 Web astutefinancial. com.au/members/mooloolaba/ ABN 59 093 587 010 Australian Credit Licence Number 364 253

TWO

Have you ever considered purchasing an investment property? What about two?

FOR ONE!

Two properties for one loan? Two houses on one block of land? Two investments in one transaction? Take up our TWO FOR ONE OFFER!

This equity can then be used towards a deposit on another property to turbocharge your portfolio.

There are significant cash flow benefits achieved from a duplex. Firstly, you generate two sources of income from two separate rental agreements.

Interested? Let me explain how.

I often hear property ‘spruikers’ referring to duplexes as an advanced strategy, only for experienced property investors. If you try and do it on your own then I guess you could say it is, but if you use a company whose core business is building duplexes and who have a proven track record, and it is all done for you, then it’s no different to building a house - except that you end up with TWO FOR ONE. ca

Once built, a duplex can be strata titled creating two separate titles on the one lot and is then revalued as two separate units, creating equity.

Vizion Group QLD www.viziongroupqld.com

Did you know it is possible to immediately make money by building a duplex? Yes, immediately! The minute the build is finished you instantly get positive cash flow and equity.

WITH CRAIG LEVITT

The Law of Averages means something is sure to happen at some time in the future, because of the number of times it has happened under the same circumstances (in the past). One could say it almost means if you keep doing the same thing you are likely to get the same result. This quote is mostly brought out to explain why we need to change behaviour, but it can also be used for maintaining behaviour. WHAT RELEVANCE DOES THIS HAVE TO YOUR BUSINESS? Let’s take prospecting for business. Assuming you have a model or process you follow, if you were to measure it (as I’m sure you do, don’t you?), you might find that you have a consistent result in converting someone from prospect to client.

It may look like this: For every 15 leads I get, I meet with ten and I make five sales - 15:10:5 This is now your own Law of Averages for sales conversions for your business. So, in this example, how do you double your sales? Well, the answer is simple, isn’t it? You need 30 leads, or you need to get in front of 30 people at an event or you need to make 30 phone calls, or you need 30 people to complete a lead magnet online et cetera. This is how the best salespeople in the business do it. They get their product or service ‘in front’ of more people. Sure, they may get more rejections but, more importantly, they also get more sales. They know that for every ‘no’ they get, there are a whole lot of people out there who will say ‘yes’. SO, WHAT ARE THE ‘AVERAGES’ IN YOUR BUSINESS? ca Craig Levitt Coaching | Craig@craiglevitt.com.au 0414 681 189 | www.craiglevitt.com.au

YOU ALWAYS NEED AN ADVANTAGE WHEN

Advantage Business Sales & Valuations is the ADVANTAGE you need to give you the EDGE! Multiple Award Winner Dione Mauric shares her tips for success in buying or selling a business. When buying a business, its potential to make a profit versus its risk of making a loss should be the basic principle that guides your decision. More potential for loss equals more risk – something that you must minimise. An IBISWorld risk rating report has shed light on the riskiest and safest industries to operate in. The most at risk included machinery and scaffolding rental, coal mining and structural steel erection services. The safest on the other hand, included veterinary services, trailer and caravan dealers and super fund management services. Minimising your risk when buying a business could be as simple as doing your research. Smaller operators should steer clear of highly risky industries, as failure is often tied closely to personal finances. There’s always a certain level of risk no matter what

industry you operate in, and failure to manage this can be detrimental. How can you minimise risk when buying a business to make sure you’re making profit, not costly mistakes?

DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE Before signing a contract, it is recommended you do the following to minimise your risk: •

Check if a clause can be added into the contract that stipulates the business must make a specified minimum profit leading up to settlement.

Before you settle, it’s essential that you have a good knowledge of all aspects of the business. This way, you can identify warning signs of risk early on.

Look at financial records carefully: have an accountant review all documents to ensure the business is in a good position.

The National Australia Bank states that one of the first warning signs is that the business is unprofitable – if you purchase a business that is making a loss, it’s possible that you’ll have to fund the shortfall.

Make transfer of existing contracts and clients a condition of sale.

Insist that you be able to work on or with the business before settlement. That way, you can verify the seller’s claims with your own eyes.

Include a clause in the contract that says settlement is dependent on all claims made by the seller being truthful and accurate.

Know the warning signs

Additionally, reliance on one or two major clients for business is a worrying sign, because if one decides to go with another provider, you’re profits could disappear overnight. Lastly, if the business’s assets are worth considerably less than the purchase price, this may make buying it more risky.

Get the ADVANTAGE with our full-service offer of: Experience, Expertise, Integrity, Ethics and Local Industry Knowledge

Running your own business could be the key to independence – both financially and in life. Entering into the purchase with your eyes open aware of all the risks and with a business plan in place will help make sure that your enterprise booms, instead of busting.

When you’re fully prepared to start your journey as a small business owner, talking to a broker is the best place to start!

That’s just the start of a long list of benefits that people with disability bring to a workplace. Not only do they add to a company’s diversity, they can also enhance its reputation to both customers and the community.

STEPS Employment Solutions offers recruitment services to a broad range of businesses and organisations at no cost, working with employers to find the best possible outcomes for their business needs. STEPS Employment Solutions Executive Manager Phoebe Payne believes all businesses can benefit from hiring a person with a disability, not only by achieving their recruitment and broader business goals but also from the valuable attributes a person with a disability brings to the workplace, such as creating valuable customer relationships and boosting staff morale. “We’ve supported thousands of people into employment, building confidence with our customers and the benefits are real for both employers and employees,” Phoebe said. “Most people with a disability won’t need changes to the workplace, so it’s a good idea to chat with your employees first.

staff member, they also love that they get to be a part of something that gives back to the community and makes real change. “We not only find the best fit staff for the business, we really get to know and work closely with businesses to provide the best possible recruitment solutions. “We offer ongoing support to make sure the candidates placed are working out well and meeting the business objectives and expectations. “We offer recruitment services to a broad range of businesses and organisations at no cost, it’s a real win-win situation,” Phoebe said. Phoebe believes there is still much work to be done to increase the employment rate of people with a disability and help shift the broader mindset from what people can’t do to what people can do in the community. Bond Busters business owner Bonnie Dean recommended using STEPS to find staff. “With government incentives supporting employing someone with a disability we were able to spend a bit more time training our staff from STEPS Employment Solutions, knowing a few weeks of their wage were already covered,” Bonnie said. According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data, almost one in five or 4.3 million Australians reported living with a disability. Entering employment can help to provide people with a disability with increased confidence, expand their social network and social skills as well as an opportunity to develop a career, providing economic security which leads to a better standard of living and overall wellbeing.

“Any modifications that are needed can usually be arranged at no cost to employers through the Australian government’s Job Access program.

As a for-purpose organisation, STEPS Employment Solutions hopes to stimulate change and create greater opportunity for people with a disability. ca

ENABLING TRANSFORMATION Change is inevitable in our speedy world. Consumer needs change constantly which provokes response if you want to stay relevant. Whilst savvy consumers drive trends, change requires innovation or the transformation of ideas. As a retailer, I find this an exciting prospect to be amidst new and emerging opportunities. I am passionate about the role I play enabling and empowering transformation.

Through White’s Grocers’ unique locavore philosophy, we constantly bring new products to market from the development stage to an exciting reality. This opens an opportunity for artisan and boutique manufacturers, local growers and suppliers to introduce their creation to market and flourish. We effectively become the conduit between the creator and consumer, connecting the two together which is a win, win, win for each stakeholder. What is not to love about that?

Consumers are crucial in the success cycle and wholeheartedly deserve the enjoyment of experiencing such diversity and all that our Sunshine Coast producers and creators offer. I’m not a bad shopper myself just quietly and enjoy scanning the market for new and emerging items on offer that I then may have the pleasure of stocking in my stores for others to enjoy. As a consumer, I love the vast array of beautiful local boutiques, talented artists, outstanding musicians, exciting entertainers and fabulous restaurants we have on offer right here on the Sunshine Coast. If you do too, be proud of the support you provide to local families and neighbours enabling the transformation of new ideas and adding to the vibrancy of our local community. #shoplocal #becomealocavore ca

As the digital world evolves, technology has transformed the way we access information, including how we source entertainment and books. There have been radical digital shifts in a range of industries like movies, videos, music and books. With the dominance of audio/visual streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify, we are now presented with a plethora of paid and free options. Access to eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines is no different, with a range of paid and free products available such as Audible, Apple, Amazon, Kobo, Wheelers, Libby and RB Digital. They say that nothing in life is free, but you may be surprised at what is. If you do a bit of online research or contact your local library, you will discover loads of free digital services like eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines, eMusic, eMovies and video streaming. If internet speed is an issue for accessing fast download or streaming services, you can get quality free Wi-Fi in public spaces, including shopping centres, cafés, public transport and libraries. It is estimated that eBook sales make up 15 to 20 per cent of the book publishing market and audiobooks continue to grow in popularity.

LIBRARY MATTERS

TRANSFORMING ENTERTAINMENT Although there are so many digital options, surprisingly this is not affecting the consumption of print books. In fact, physical book sales worldwide have been up two to three per cent over recent years. That’s more than one billion physical books sold across the globe annually.

So, it’s clear our appetite to have a book in our hands is not dwindling. m library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

FITNESS MATTERS

WHAT IS EMS?

EMS is the answer to fitness for smart and busy people. EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation.

In training, a machine delivers electrical pulses that stimulate muscle contraction. EMS heightens those contractions, intensifying your workout in a way that your body could not on its own. ‘Every day our brain sends electrical impulses to muscles to achieve movement’.

A further study focusing more on the internal health benefits of EMS showed that EMS training was extremely effective in lowering blood pressure, especially the diastolic value. Muscle mass increased by 14 per cent and internal body fat dropped dramatically. The cardio threshold increased by 96 per cent after six months. (3)

In conclusion, studies have shown that EMS training outperforms regular exercise with dramatic increases in body strength, desired body shape and treatment of back pain. Moreover, the studies and personal stories report trainees to be transformed into happier, healthier people. A study at the University of Bayreuth saw 150 participants with an average age of 42, complete six weeks of twice-weekly EMS sessions, whilst maintaining a normal, balanced diet.

The average body fat loss was 1.4 per cent. Female subjects lost 1.5 cm at the waist and 1.1 cm in the hip area. Maximum body strength increased by 12 per cent and endurance by 69 per cent. 83 per cent noted an increased feeling of wellness. (1)

A different study examined the effects of EMS training on (chronic) lower back pain. After six weekly sessions, 88.7 per cent reported a significant decrease in pain (frequency and intensity). From the entire group, 50 per cent were completely free of their chronic back pain. Of the group, 75 per cent noticed an improvement in mood and vitality. (2)

CULTURAL SHIFT COMES LAST The trouble with life in the 21st Century is that we’re always in a hurry. Our kids expect instant gratification. Our teenagers graduate from university and anticipate a fast-tracked career progression to the top of the hierarchical pyramid. And within our businesses and organisations, we are restive, if not plain impatient. If things are not as we perceive they should be, we want change. Now! And if you ask me, that’s why many enterprises fail to successfully transform themselves and establish the Utopian culture they aspire to. Unfortunately, I’ve had to learn the hard way that changing organisational culture is necessarily a slow process. In trying to expedite the process there is always a risk of failing to properly explain and reinforce the message about the need for and reasons behind the change, which can result in losing the engagement of members of the team. Rush it, and they can get off the bus, so to speak. In making this error of judgement there have been times in my career when a good plan to make change has failed to be effective. I’m a strong believer that an organisation’s culture is a key driver of its success. After all, as Peter Drucker once said, “Culture eats strategy

for breakfast!” So, managing cultural change is not just important, it’s critical. But there’s a reason why Harvard’s leadership luminary Dr John Kotter left cultural change as the last in his eight-step process to successfully manage organisational change – you can’t institutionalise change until it’s the new norm. As Dr Kotter suggests, to successfully bring about a different state of affairs we first need to create a sense of urgency, form a guiding coalition and create, then communicate the vision. We then remove barriers, create quick wins and build on the change. It’s only at this stage that Dr Kotter suggests that we can finally institutionalise the changes.

Managing change in an organisation is never easy. There will always be personalities in the team that are resistant to a new approach; occasionally there will even be internal terrorists that become barriers and might need to be removed.

But at the end of the day, just remind yourself that nothing worth having comes easily! Time heals, and it also ingrains culture. In my consulting work, I’ve often been heard to suggest that good execution trumps great strategy. So, if you want a different approach to culture to stick, be persistent, be patient and keep living the values you espouse. ca www.schultzlaw.com.au

RIGHT PLACE RIGHT TIMEHELPING PEOPLE ACCESS THE RIGHT AFTER-HOURS CARE More than 55,000 people present to Sunshine Coast hospitals in a single year, who are categorised with a nonurgent condition; more than half of them can be treated by a GP. Buderim GP, Dr Jon Harper said emergency departments were not always the best option for people presenting with non-urgent conditions. “People seeking medical care for a minor injury or illness will find it is easier and usually a lot quicker to speak to a nurse on 13HEALTH or see an after-hours doctor, instead of waiting for hours at busy hospitals. “However, people are often unaware of their options when seeking medical attention, particularly if their child is sick or injured in a non-life-threatening situation,” Dr Harper said. “With the Sunshine Coast attracting visitors from across Australia and the rest of the world during summer and school holidays, they also tend to stick to what they know when they’re in an unfamiliar area and will seek treatment at a hospital.” Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast PHN’s Right Place Right Time campaign aims to educate people about what other services provide medical advice and treatment, and what after-hours options are available for non-urgent care. Seeking effective treatment can be as simple as finding the closest general practice that’s open, getting advice over the phone or contacting the local after-hours home visit doctor service.

People can also access free medical advice 24/7 online using the Healthdirect symptom checker or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84). “These simple steps can help reduce pressure on emergency departments and encourage people to seek the right care for their symptoms,” Dr Harper said. “Going online to find medical services can save people waiting in an emergency department and keep emergency services for emergencies.” The Right Place Right Time campaign, which will run again in the leadup to Easter, includes a website www.rightplacerighttime.com.au, cinema advertising, posters in GP clinics and emergency departments as well as advertising in local shopping centres. ca For campaign resources, contact Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast PHN by email communications@ourphn.org.au.

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR BUSINESS BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION

Something to consider when transforming your business for 2019 and beyond… Pride is an interesting concept when you think about how it impacts your business. If you understand the concept, and what you want to achieve, then working towards getting the outcome you want, you are on your way to attaining business improvement. So, what does pride mean in the workplace? If you take pride in your business and what you want to achieve, it means feeling very pleased with what you are doing. It follows, then, that if you don’t take professional pride in your work then why are you doing it?

In a nutshell, to have pride in what you are doing means that you care about the outcome. If you care about the outcome, then your employees are also going to care about the outcome. Everyone is working towards the same goal. You are creating a work environment in which your employees feel proud of where they work. It’s been shown that employees who love what they do, and the business they work for, will demonstrate that support in words and actions. This is a very powerful combination for any business. So, how do you work towards this magic formula? 1. Hire proud employees: you are looking for the right tone and attitude that will align with your business. 2. Create an environment of employee engagement: recognition of employee achievements goes a long way. 3. Make sure you have clear business objectives: so, employees know the direction in which you are going. 4. Let employees know how they fit into the business and its goals. 5. Make sure both your employees and your business have the resources needed to get the job done. 6. Create a business based on respect and integrity.

In summary, creating a workplace to be proud of can only bring positive results and engaged employees which will make a difference to both the business’s and employees’ success. m Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. EVOLVE

OR DISSOLVE In business, as in life, if you’re not moving forward then by default you’re moving backwards. Nothing stays the same. So, for our businesses to grow and transform, we as the business owners need to grow and transform first. That’s why, with the thousands of speaking engagements I’ve done around the world, the first thing I always write up on the board is, ‘IN ORDER FOR THINGS TO CHANGE, I MUST CHANGE FIRST’. Many business owners I work with first resist that notion, thinking, “it’s not me that needs to change. Our business has changed because there’s competition!”, or “the market’s changed” or “the economy’s down”. Are you thinking that the world is going to come around to match up with you again, and where YOU are? Or do you think it would make more sense that we need to evolve ourselves to match up to where the world is? WE ARE OUR BUSINESSES. Since we’re the leaders in our business, everything in our business then follows our lead. That’s why we need to transform ourselves and reinvent ourselves so that we can continually and consistently grow our business. The way to do that is quite simple: 1. We have to have the correct mindset, which is: in order for things to change I must change 2. Develop new skillsets, which would come from the question: “What skillsets do I need to grow my business?” That can then all be done through education, application and follow through. ca www.kurekashley.com

MAROOCHYDORE CBD TO

TRANSFORM RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE

The small business and residential landscape is set to be transformed on the Sunshine Coast in 2019 with work expected to start in the new Maroochydore CBD on an innovative development combining work and living spaces. In a first for the Queensland residential market, Brisbane-based Habitat Development Group has unveiled plans to build a new $83 million Small Office Home Office (SOHO) townhouse project in the future city centre. As well as the SOHO townhouses, the project also includes two residential towers with a total of 146 apartments. “The Maroochydore CBD’s contemporary urban design, digital connectivity and coastal lifestyle called for an innovative residential development suited to mobile workers of the future,” said Habitat Development Group Managing Director, Cleighton Clark. The first stage of the new project will be a 12-storey tower with 65 apartments, followed by a 14-storey tower with a communal rooftop terrace and pool and 81 apartments. Work would then commence on the six SOHO town homes. Mr Clark said SOHO town homes were designed to have the efficiency of an office with the comfort of a home. “They are spread over two or three floors, depending on the size of the SOHO, with light, ventilation, noise and access to telecommunications

and internet connectivity all critical design considerations,” he said. SunCentral Maroochydore Chief Executive Officer John Knaggs said more than $10 million of underground telecommunications and digital infrastructure has been established to ensure the latest technology was available in the new CBD. An international subsea internet cable, to land at the entrance to the new CBD, would provide unprecedented high-speed digital connectivity to Asia and the rest of the world. “While much of 2018 was spent preparing the site for development, people will really start to see the new CBD emerge from the ground in 2019,” Mr Knaggs said. Habitat Development Group’s 4158sq m project at the northern end of the site is one of two building projects expected to come out of the ground this year at the new 53ha CBD. Sunshine Coast developer Evans Long will also start work on its eightstorey, 4500sq m office tower with retail space on the lower level. ca maroochydore-city.com.au

TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS? If you are looking for more leads for your business, then SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) might be just the thing you need. It’s no secret that we live in the digital age. The internet has gone through multiple stages of evolution but now it’s starting to stabilise. Giants like Google and Amazon are going from strength-to-strength, whilst those unable to adapt to the changing landscape fell into the cracks. Remember MySpace? Just like the giants of the digital age must evolve or wilt so, too, must the businesses that advertise on their platforms. We need to seek out the experts to ensure that we absolutely maximise this growth opportunity. Targeted marketing and digital reputation are key to growth and consistent returns for your business. It is no longer enough to slap together a website and hope for the best. You need to think about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and network security.

COOKING UP A STORM GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND FOR SKILLED HOSPITALITY WORKERS GROWTH IN THE LOCAL HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM INDUSTRY IS PROVING TO BE A DRAWCARD FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WITH A PASSION FOR FOOD, WITH A NUMBER OF STUDENTS GOING ON TO LAND POSITIONS AT SOME OF THE SUNSHINE COAST’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS DINING ESTABLISHMENTS. Reports by the Australian Government’s Department of Jobs and Small Business show that Australia is set to experience a 16.7 per cent growth in the demand for chefs over the next five years – with a 9.7 per cent growth in the accommodation and food service industry estimated for the Sunshine Coast alone. With so many job opportunities, there has never been a better time for foodies to turn their interest into a career in the culinary arts, and international students have been jumping at the chance to develop their skills and launch their careers in such an idyllic location. TAFE Queensland graduate Federica Lunato’s decision to do just that has paid off more than even she anticipated, after she landed a role as commis chef at the prestigious hatted restaurant The Long Apron just six months into her 18-month qualification. Federica caught the attention of the acclaimed chef behind the Spicers Clovelly restaurant, Chris Hagan, after he approached TAFE Queensland’s experienced and reputable cookery teachers for a recommendation. “I’m so happy with the decision I made to come here; it really has been a life-changing opportunity for me,” Federica said.

“I’m so grateful for the support my teachers gave me throughout my studies and the opportunities that have been presented to me thanks to their help. They taught me a lot of skills that I will carry with me throughout my career; they really pushed us to achieve the best we could.” Formally a graphic designer in Milan, Italy, 32-year-old Federica had always loved cooking as a hobby but had never seriously considered it as a career. But a growing desire for change saw Federica re-evaluate her options, and

I really love the creativity of cooking. There’s no limit to what you can create, from different ingredients and textures to tastes.

after receiving recommendations from friends who had studied in Australia, she made the decision to enrol in a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery with TAFE Queensland, which she completed in December last year. “There are so many opportunities for qualified chefs looking to get into the hospitality industry as adults here, whereas in Italy, if you don’t start early you get left behind,” Federica said. “I really love the creativity of cooking. There’s no limit to what you can create, from different ingredients and textures to tastes. It was very easy for me to transfer that from my work in graphic design to my work as a chef."

While Federica is a stand-out student, she isn’t the only one to be poached from Mooloolaba’s cookery program by a highly respected establishment, with many other students also getting head-hunted or landing coveted roles as a result of TAFE Queensland’s reputation for quality training. And as the region’s hospitality and tourism industry continues to grow, so too will the opportunities for those who are passionate about producing good food and service. Discover your options for a rewarding career in cookery and hospitality by visiting tafeqld.edu.au or calling 1300 308 233, and enrol today to see where TAFE can take you.

EDUCATION MATTERS

TRANSFORMING

HOW WE RAISE CHILDREN Welcome to 2019. If I could transform or change an aspect of how we are raising and educating our children, it would be in building resilience. If we start by building independence, resilience will follow. As Michael Grose declares, children are hard-wired for independence. He goes on to explain that very early on, most children will make a strong case for self-sufficiency. They demand to do things their own way. This demand is soon backed by a strong will as they approach about the age of three! This is the time to harness their push for independence and self-sufficiency. Their push for independence will see most children take incredible physical risks in the form of play, the exploration of their immediate surrounds and their wish to gain mastery over their environment.

As parents and educators, we recognise that children will fall and hurt themselves, but they’ll also get up and go again. In time, they’ll learn to assess situations, stare down their fears and test themselves out in new situations. Falling down, brushing yourself off and trying again is part of the natural learning experience for most young children. So, what’s this got to do with resilience? Independence is the pursuit of mastery over one’s self and one’s environment and it rarely happens without failure, mishaps and mistakes. It nearly always involves hurt, hardship, frustration and fear. That’s where resilience comes in. Resilience is the art of bouncing forward after experiencing these hurts, hardships, frustrations and fears. Resilience is what comes from seeking out self-sufficiency and independence.

There’s a whole genre of language devoted to resilience and it’s mostly cloaked in cliché. Terms such as ‘get back on the bike when you fall off’ and ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ are built into the psyche of past generations. Many parents today will cringe at these terms as they appear a little callous and out of touch. However, therein lies the challenge. We all want our children to develop resilience that will last a lifetime. Yet, many of us will block the pathway to children’s resilience by over-indulging, solving their problems and not giving them real responsibility. In doing so they deny children the sense of mastery that comes from sorting out their own problems, getting themselves out of jams and getting up after a fall. You can never love your children too much, but you can love them helplessly. It’s a parent’s job to acknowledge the hurt, pain, frustration, but not to prevent it. That’s what happens when we deny them the opportunity to become truly independent and self-sufficient. Deny self-sufficiency and you block a child’s resilience. Develop real independence and you open the pathway to resilience that will last a lifetime. We need to let our kids know that they are supported and loved but that we also trust that they are strong and brave and adventurous and competent. Let’s see if we can transform our thinking to best equip our children. m www.saac.qld.edu.au

QUALITY MANAGEMENT

In the business world, Quality Management is a system that ensures its products and/or services are consistent in output/outcome. Management define activities, processes and functions that are detailed in a quality policy and its implementation is done through means of quality planning, quality assurance and quality control. ISO 9001 Standard – Quality Management Systems This Standard (once accredited) shows that a business has satisfied its quality processes by meeting regulatory requirements and focusing on continual improvement. This is an internationally recognised Standard across 160 countries, consisting of seven quality management principles. 1. CUSTOMER FOCUS • Understand the needs of existing and future customers • Align organisational objectives with customer needs and expectations • Meet customer requirements • Measure customer satisfaction • Manage customer relationships • Aim to exceed customer expectation 2. LEADERSHIP • Establish a vision and direction for the organisation • Set challenging goals • Model organisational values • Establish trust • Equip and empower employees • Recognise employee contributions

3. ENGAGEMENT OF PEOPLE • Ensure that people’s abilities are used and valued • Make people accountable • Enable participation in continual improvement • Evaluate individual performance • Enable learning and knowledge sharing • Enable open discussion of problems and constraints

6. EVIDENCE-BASED DECISION MAKING • Ensure the accessibility of accurate and reliable data • Use appropriate methods to analyse data • Make decisions based on analysis • Balance data analysis with practical experience

4. PROCESS APPROACH

7. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

• Manage activities as processes • Measure the capability of activities • Identify linkages between activities • Prioritise improvement opportunities • Deploy resources effectively

• Identify and select suppliers to manage costs, optimise resources and create value • Share expertise, resources, information and plans with partners • Collaborate on improvement and development activities • Recognise supplier successes

5. IMPROVEMENT • Improve organisational performance and capabilities • Align improvement activities • Empower people to make improvements • Measure improvement consistently • Celebrate improvements

Your business can adapt the quality management framework without holding the ISO accreditation. By introducing this framework, you will be cementing your processes and activities within the business and ensure consistency no matter who undertakes the tasks to produce the products/services. Management can then look at the continual improvement process to make sure the product/service is always competitive with its competitors. m www.imperiumcs.com.au

The benefits of getting a professional involved early in the process. Are you planning on building a home? Or reinvigorating your company’s interior? Or tackling a commercial construction project? Q: When should you call your builder or shopfitter? It’s a question that is often overlooked but quite easily answered. A: As early as possible! Through years of experience, we have found that the earlier we can become involved in a project, the more positive influence we can have on its cost, performance and outcomes. As a project moves closer towards completion, the cost of implementing change increases significantly. We’ve found that when we are involved in the project right from the planning stage, we can foresee the significant challenges that may lie ahead. This foresight allows us to plan and manoeuvre your project around those challenges and achieve a positive outcome. To all our current and prospective clients, we offer the opportunity to discuss their project on-site with our team as early as possible. If you’re leasing a property, then we encourage a ‘Pre-Lease Assessment’ that allows us to look at the potential challenges that exist within each space. If you’re planning to buy, then we recommend you take a professional into the premises prior to beginning your negotiation process.

The more knowledge you can arm yourself with during the early stages, the more prepared you’ll be for the challenges that come along with the building. ca P: 07 5319 3068 | www.coopersmall.com.au

IN YOUR HOME OR BUSINESS? Here are some reasons why you might consider doing it now: The Government is currently contributing to the upfront cost. Were you aware that the Federal Government is currently funding close to 50 per cent of the upfront cost of solar? This is under the current renewal Energy Scheme. This means you can get a solar system for half price at home. And, if you have a business, you can get up to $70,000 contribution per electricity account. Both tenants and landlords can apply. Most Australians are not aware of this rebate. In fact, many think they missed the boat when a few years ago, the power companies were offering solar owners up to 50 cents per kilowatt hour to buy your power back. Solar has never been more affordable; with the Government rebate, your payback on electricity savings is around two years. How long will the Government continue this incentive?

Years ago, we hardly even noticed the power bills and took for granted how little we paid for power. Now, unfortunately, the average family is paying $600 in electricity per quarter – that’s $2400 per year. This is one of our highest costs. Business power prices are the second highest on average. Did you know the average school pays $10,000 in electricity costs every month? The average small café will pay $2000 per month on average. What else can we do to bring down this cost except install a solar system? Landlords are increasingly giving their tenants permission to install solar, as they know the tenant will not want to move in a hurry when they eliminate their power costs. m

BRET DAVIS Wholesale Solar

Bret Davis has been passionate about solar for as far back as he can remember, with over 30 years in management roles, Bret is now following his passion to get solar installed into as many homes and business premises as he can, at the most affordable price possible by cutting out the middle man.

We hope this continues. With a Federal Election coming up in May this year the Labor Government is promising to continue the Government rebate. The cost of electricity is now one of the major costs in our homes and businesses.

FIRE UP COACHING

RELINQUISH

WITH LOVE

For most of us, there is at least one area of our life that we would love to transform. The word ‘transform’ is defined on dictionary.com as a verb, meaning ‘to change in condition, nature or character; to convert’. To transform means to permanently change which is much harder than just altering our patterns or habits for a short time. Knowing that we need to make changes is one thing, but actually being able to transform an area of our life takes commitment, awareness and desire. If you have no desire to change, then simply you will not. Others may nag, criticise and coerce all they like but you yourself need to find the drive and desire to overhaul the parts of you or your life that need it. Many of us can visualise ‘future self’. In our minds, we fantasise about the future self who will be a major improvement on current self. Future self will eat and drink less, exercise more, have sorted out their relationship issues and be happy. At the end of our coaching course, we do an activity where everyone celebrates what has opened up for them and writes on post-it notes what they need to leave behind now they have new options for being and behaving. I have been doing this exercise for many years and the same versions keep showing up year after year. Maybe it can help you reflect?

Relinquish shame and guilt: Stop focusing on past failures. Ruminating on the worst version of ourselves, or what hasn’t worked, stops us from accessing our ability to envision a new future. Spend time revisioning and reimagining your desired future.

Do whatever it takes to get into a positive mental state – get fit, practise meditation, hang out with positive people, just find a way to release negative feelings because these can only lead to negative behaviours and consequences.

THE THINKING LIST

Negative thinking and destructive patterns

Everyone’s transformation journey is different so my formula for success may not be yours. We can learn much from how others transform their lives and let go of what holds them back. My own ability to learn and grow from past experiences around adopting my daughter out when I was 20 is coming together this year in my book, ‘Relinquish with Love’.

Fear of comparison A sense I am lacking

3

Relinquish comparison to others: Stop comparing yourself to others. Use social media for its positive impacts but, if you cannot partake in it without it making you feel inferior, then get off it and start journaling what you have done better this week than last week. Any comparisons need to be related to improvements and progress of your own.

5

One of my clients this week referred to times when she has to put on her ‘brave pants’. Find the courage to go beyond your comfort zone. I know writing my book exposes a very personal journey however, fear of judgement has stopped me from claiming my right as a birth mother for 33 years and 2019 is when I’ll get my ‘brave pants’ on!

Transforming your life means embracing the new and forever relinquishing the old but do it carefully and with love as everything before has brought you to now. The first time I was told that “everything is exactly as it was meant to be”, I preferred to think that was not the case, and that others were to blame. When we find a way to love ourselves for all we are and show selfcompassion, we can be at peace in accepting what has been and creating the future that honours the best of who you are and will be. ca

TRANSFORMATION SUCCESS

“It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped,” Tony Robbins. I believe without a doubt that nothing is truer in life; once you make a decision and really commit to following through, if it’s written (not just in your head), then the chances of achieving the outcomes are dramatically improved. We make decisions all the time - you know, the ones you made at New Year! That part can seem easy but following through, actually making that decision stick, well that’s a whole new ball game!

GET RID OF LIMITING BELIEFS

The first thing you need to understand when it comes to making a decision is that you can’t make a good decision if your beliefs are negative and limiting. For example, you’ve decided you want to find your soulmate or even just a really nice person to hang out with, but deep down you think that you’re not worthy of love. That’s a limiting belief that will stop you from following through to achieve what you want.

DEFINE YOUR GOALS

This is a very important step. You need to know what you want to do and where you want to get to. In order to make a great decision, you need to know what it is that you really want. It’s important to be very specific here because you won’t follow through if you’re not emotionally attached; it’s almost impossible to respond in a motivated way to general wishy-washy wishes.

to achieve something, it helps me to be more emotionally attached and to remember why I’m chasing that star, when things get tough! This is what you’re going to base your decisions on and is certainly one of the most important steps in following through; you need to be emotionally connected to your decisions. If you’re having trouble defining your goals and dreams, make a vision board. It can really help to see pictures of what you want as a daily reminder; I keep mine in the kitchen.

HAVE A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN  “I’ve written my goals! I’ve made my decisions, so why do I need a development plan?” You wouldn’t build a house without a plan, would you? So why go through life without a plan? A personal development plan is like a guide for life. By having a plan, you gain a greater sense of control over your life and by extension make better decisions for your life. A plan makes achieving your goals so much easier. MAKE THE DECISION TODAY, TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU LOVE! m Set4success@gmail.com

Really think about your dreams and goals. What would make your life feel fulfilled? Is it a new career, a new house, a trip around the world, better relationships with your family or finally shifting that weight and feeling alive? Write down your dreams and goals and try to be as detailed as possible. I find that when I’m writing my goals if I put in the reason WHY I want

BARTERCARD

THREE WAYS to boost customers and cash flow in hospitality Do you have empty seats to fill? Would you like to boost cash flow in your restaurant or bar? In a constantly-shifting industry, where new venues are opening weekly, staying at the top isn’t always easy. Bartercard has the tips and tricks to stay ahead of the curve and think outside the wine box to attract new customers. Instead of (just) listing with food delivery services, deal sites or third-party booking site… 1. ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS WITH BARTERCARD Food delivery services are buzzing and whilst they’re putting restaurants in the mix, not all restaurateurs are opting for the paper bag approach that can come at a cost. If your restaurant is at the higher end, consider the impact on waiting diners, the presentation of the food when it reaches the customer, and whether that’s on-brand with your restaurant. Ensure you have the resources and space to prepare extra orders, too. If you’re looking to list on deal sites, factor in the impact of discounting prices which can devalue a brand and attract oneoff customers shopping at a specific price point. Similarly, third-party booking sites can capture the details of bookings to remarket to, instead of the restaurant doing so. Bartercard attracts new customers without discounting or third-party booking sites for more control in the business. Few restaurants and bars are at 100 per cent capacity around the clock and Bartercard can fill that downtime. These customers are actively looking to spend

their Bartercard Trade Dollars and are more likely to return in the future. There are many ways to attract new customers in the market and you might find a mix of different approaches works. Instead of spending cash on every business expense… 2. OFFSET CASH EXPENSES WITH BARTERCARD Bartercard doesn’t just attract new customers, it also saves valuable cash. Many restaurant owners use Bartercard Trade Dollars to purchase wine which they on-sell for cash in their restaurant. This effectively turns downtime into cash sales. They also use Trade Dollars to offset cash expenses like kitchen equipment, furnishings and renovations by using their Trade Dollars instead of cash. To earn Trade Dollars, they welcome customers on Bartercard when they have spare capacity to keep their restaurant full off-peak. 3. BUILD YOUR BUSINESS NETWORK Building a network of local restaurateurs and business owners lets you continually learn, stay in the loop, think outside the box and canvass solutions to industry hurdles. Bartercard is a business network with thousands of hospitality members worldwide and year-round events at a local level to continually stay front and centre of the industry. MAKE IT EASY FOR CUSTOMERS TO PAY YOU Transformation always makes me think of the ugly duckling – you know the cygnet that grows up to be a beautiful swan. A lot of businesses (and their owners) remind me of swans – looking graceful on top but paddling like mad underneath.

l a ol c FOCUS IS THE NEW YEAR THE TIME TO TRANSFORM YOUR BUSINESS?

One of the easiest ways to ease the paddling pressure so to speak is to get your cash flow under control. The most critical areas to assist with cash flow are: • Sending invoices out in a timely manner • Receiving payment when it’s due • Allocating cash to ensure you can always pay yourself, staff and bills on time Today, sending invoices in a timely manner is easy – use an online accounting program such as Xero and you can invoice any job on completion wherever you are. You need to make it easy for customers to pay you, so ensure you have direct debit details on your invoices and include payment systems such as PayPal, Stripe or Square to take payments immediately by card where possible. Automatic reminders can also help to ensure prompt payment.

Transformation means many things to different people. For some, it means more sales, for others it means less time spent in the business. What does it mean for you? For us at HBA Encompass it means small, constant, regular changes. Monumental, sudden change doesn’t work; it may start out with a bang but ultimately you and your staff are most likely to return to old habits. In business, small changes can make a big difference. Our Business Transformation Chart looks like this: your everyday life. No of Clients x

WORDS MEAN BUSINESS

TRANSFORM

YOUR WEBSITE –

TRANSFORM

YOUR BUSINESS

WITH SOPHIA AULD

A website is usually a big investment, but not all business owners know whether theirs is working as hard as it could. A great site can mean the difference between whether customers choose you or one of your competitors. Here are some tips to help you make your website more engaging for your visitors and convert them to customers. 1. CREATE A POWERFUL FIRST IMPRESSION When potential customers come to your site, they’re forming an instant impression of your business. What do you want that to be? One that is engaging, compelling and inviting, or not so much? Experiments have shown that users can judge a website’s credibility in as little as 3.42 seconds, so you don’t get long to make an impact. If you were meeting a new client in person, you wouldn’t turn up in sweaty gym gear (unless you’re a personal trainer, perhaps). Having pages that are clean, fresh and easy to navigate will reassure potential clients that your business is professional and trustworthy. On the other hand, a site with spelling and grammar mistakes can leave the impression that you don’t know your stuff. Are your current pages clear, easy to read and error-free? Not everyone is a grammar geek – or wants to be. If words aren’t your strength, a professional copywriter can create content for your pages that makes you look and sound as wonderful as you are at doing what you do. A good web developer can turn a mediocre site into something visually stunning.

50 ISSUE 91

2. OPTIMISE PROMOTION OF YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES You’re in business because you have a product or service to sell, and your website needs to showcase them to their full potential.

This is no place to be shy. High-quality images taken by a professional photographer will highlight products to their best effect. Concise but thorough descriptions of your products or services will boost credibility and help to answer any customer questions. A good way to start is by imagining how you would describe your product or service to your ideal buyer. Think about the language you’d use: would it be humorous, sophisticated, a bit cheeky? Use that language to write descriptions that your customers will easily relate to. Remember to highlight benefits over features. Would you be more enticed by a lawnmower with a powerful engine and wider cut, or one that will finish your lawn and have you sitting down for a beer in half the time? Do you want a practitioner with XYX qualifications or one who will see you today and fix your sore back? Help your customers see why your products or services are superior, and how their lives will be better for using them.

3. SHARE SOCIAL PROOF

4. HAVE A STRONG CALL TO ACTION

Sure, you know that your business is awesome, but why should anyone else believe you? Offering social proof lets customers know it’s not just you tooting your own horn.

Getting people to your site is a great start, but what do you want them to do? A strong Call to Action (CTA) makes it easier for visitors to know what to do next, whether that’s purchase a product, make an appointment to see you, register for an event, download a guide or subscribe to a newsletter.

Testimonials are a fantastic way of showing that other people think you’re amazing. A personal recommendation about the quality of your business does so much more than you are talking about it.

If you’ve got great ratings on a review site, make it known. Online reviews have been shown to impact 67.7 per cent of purchasing decisions, and almost three-quarters (74 per cent) of consumers say they trust local businesses with positive reviews more, so use these ratings if you have them. Use logos or images to display companies that you’ve worked with or share any media outlets where your business has been featured. If you promote your business on social media, show how many people are sharing your content. There are plugins to do this on your site. Talk to your web developer about ways to make it easy for people to share your great content with their network, expanding your reach.

Statistics from Unbounce show that more than 90 per cent of visitors who read your headline will also read your CTA, while Adroll found that adding CTAs to a Facebook page can increase the click-through rate by 285 per cent. The positioning, style and colour of CTAs all influence their effectiveness, so talk to a marketing expert for advice. The wording also has a powerful effect. Would you be more likely to click on a button saying, ‘Click here’, or one that says, ‘Yes, send mine now’? A professional copywriter can advise you here. Any CTA is better than none, so get started with something, and do some A/B testing to discover what is working best for you. Professional copywriters craft words for website and Facebook pages, product and service descriptions, CTAs, staff profiles and case studies. TOP TEN STRESSES FELT BY AUSTRALIAN BUSINESS OWNERS THIS TIME OF YEAR A recent study conducted with a small business lender in conjunction with YouGov has shown small business owners spend more time worrying about keeping their business open than they do enjoying their free time, with most of this worry related to cash flow in their business. Do you suffer from some of these stresses below?

• Nine out of ten small business owners said they felt distracted by work in other areas of their life.

• 54 per cent of SME owners spend six to seven days a week on their business, with 28 per cent working seven days a week.

• Nearly two-thirds said it also affects their sleep.

• Even when not at work, almost threequarters said concerns around their business prevented them from relaxing during holiday periods like Christmas.

• Four out of five (79 per cent) business owners feel that at least occasionally they miss out on quality time with their family, with 28 per cent saying they miss out frequently.

52 ISSUE 91

• The report found that small business owners aged 18-49 years feel the pressure more than their older counterparts. • Small business owners between the ages of 18-49 years are more than twice as likely as those 50 years and over to strongly agree that concerns around their business prevent them from relaxing during the holidays. • Their dating lives are also impacted, with one in four people surveyed under 50 saying they have been distracted by work when on a date. • Regardless of age, eight in ten (78 per cent) small business owners say that at least some of their business worries are related to cash flow. • Two-thirds (65 per cent) of small business owners feel stressed during the holiday period because of cash flow problems in their business.

The incidence of cash flow-related worries also corresponds to small business owners feeling that they more frequently miss out on quality family time. Commenting on the findings, Fox Finance Group Founder Dan Fox said, “Brokers play an important role in being able to provide much-needed valuable support to small business owners.

“Two-thirds are stressed and distracted by cash flow during different times of the year and for many different reasons. For example, invoice-based clients are dealing with slow payments and the quiet January period, creating a cash flow squeeze. “December and January are the busiest times for most retailers and staff costs are high. Meanwhile, CBD cafes and shops see a noticeable drop in foot traffic as regular customers flock to the beach.”

So, if you consider yourself one of the many stressed-out business owners you don’t have to feel that you are alone or that help is not on hand. HOME CARE

DON’T TAKE FALLS FOR GRANTED

5 TIPS TO TAKE CONTROL “It won’t happen to me.” These are the brave words of many of us as we age. We won’t trip over or take a tumble. But don’t be so sure. Every day 133 older Queenslanders have a fall that leads to medical attention. And about 30 per cent of falls result in broken bones, including hip fractures, head injuries or forearm fractures. Thankfully there are steps that you can take to reduce the likelihood that you or your loved ones will take a tumble. Tip #1 – Review your medication Some medication can affect your sense of balance. Other drugs can cause swelling in the feet, rounding out the soles which can reduce your stability. Read the side effects. Check what your elderly family member is taking and how long since they have had a full review of their medication. Some medications interact and increase the risks of dizziness and confusion. The more drugs someone is taking, the more chance of negative interactions. If you have concerns, see your doctor. Tip #2 – Keep up regular vision checks Visit the optometrist once a year and see that your elderly loved ones do as well. Some progressive lenses can affect your depth perception. A pair of single lens glasses for walking may be a safe addition. Tip #3 – Vitamin D: Are you getting enough? Vitamin D improves muscle strength. It is used in delivering calcium to the cells, which is needed for muscle contraction. Research shows that

older individuals with low vitamin D levels have a poor gait, are not as strong as their peers and have reduced balance.

According to the Cancer Council Queensland, you get enough Vitamin D with just five to six minutes of outdoor activity a day. Tip #4 – Find an exercise you love Staying physically strong will improve your balance and reduce the risk and impact of falls. Look for an activity that challenges you and that you love. A dance class, a swimming group, a walking club – there are so many options. The key is getting started. Find an exercise buddy. Exercise with a friend. Tip #5 – Beware of thongs Thongs are unstable footwear. They make you grip with your toes and offer no support to the arch or the heel. Podiatrists hate them. They are a hazard in the home and the garden. So, throw them in a cupboard and enjoy the benefits - fewer falls, fewer sprains and less tired feet. m

LEAD GENERATION

NO MORE

COLD

CALLS! There are few things in life more annoying than cold calls. Cyclists and people that don’t indicate are two that come to mind! You sit down for dinner, hot and inviting, and the phone rings. You were just winding down, venting the stress and pressure of the day. The caller ID reads ‘Caller Unknown’. You roll your eyes. You know what comes next. The warm garble of a room full of telemarketers fills your ear. The caller opens by butchering your name; they ask if your electricity bill is too high, or if your internet is slow. You say your internet is fine, at least by Australian standards. Your electricity bills are tolerable. They ignore you and read on from their poorly written script. You give a heaving sigh into the receiver and hang up. Dinner is getting cold. Your mood is ruined. These abject invasions of time and privacy are why lead generation websites are the future for you and your business. What is a lead generation website you ask? It’s the solution to decades of frustrating cold calls and email spam campaigns, as well as the next evolution of word-of-mouth for smaller businesses. It saves you from being the annoying business that badgers people by targeting the ones who want your services. It won’t teach you to indicate or throw away your 57-speed bike and Lycra shorts, but it’s a start.

56 ISSUE 91

So, what is a lead? And why should I use a website to generate them? A lead is a potential paying customer. Someone who has shown a level of interest in what you and your business provide, whether directly or indirectly. A lead generation website’s sole duty is to find these leads and draw them to your services as efficiently as possible. It’s all in the name. A website that generates leads. Lead generation is how we warm up our prospective clients and put them on the road to buying what we sell. We live in a competitive gig-based economy and

it’s no longer good enough to rely on people to find you. And people don’t have time to deal with marketing campaigns. That’s why you need to let them do the work. If they want a carpenter or a mechanic or anything in the world, they will find it. A lead generation website ensures they don’t just find what they want, they find you. By contacting a potential client who is already interested in your services you are much more likely to convert your potential sale. And not only will your sale conversions increase but you will have more leads in general as lead-gen sites are well-optimised for search engines.

Leads are vital so why not just cut out the middle man and buy them directly? Buying leads instead of generating them organically is an understandably tempting proposition. You were going to market your services anyway. Why not just spend that money on guaranteed interest? Well, because these leads won’t be your leads. And you’ll be just as much a stranger to them as the telemarketer who ruined our dinner. They didn’t agree to be in contact with you directly so any contact with you is as cold as if you had just shot them a spam mail to begin with. Your contact will be unwanted and intrusive and will most likely end up in the spam folder along with so many Nigerian princes. This

is bad for your company’s image and any plans for future contact with clients, no matter how warm they are to you. Once enough people mark you as spam, email providers will blacklist your emails and you won’t be able to hit up those new leads. It’s costly not only for your reputation but also for your pocket. Prepackaged leads can be expensive.

their day was. Sending unwarranted emails or phone calls is just the digital equivalent of jumping out of the bushes and throwing a flyer at someone before running away. A lead generation site will source leads for you and deliver their information to you so you can make contact in the most natural way possible. The lead will know who you are, what you are offering and why you are getting in touch. An organic dialogue.

A lead-gen site will continuously provide you with consistent long-term leads who know who you are. Lead-gen sites ensure that whoever you are contacting is familiar with you and your services.

So, to wrap all this up and let you continue whatever it is you were doing: Lead generation websites allow you to find and seek out people who are interested in what you are selling without annoying or alienating cold leads who are uninterested in your services now. Let these leads come to you providing you with more time and resources to work on other elements of your business. f

A relationship that forms organically is more likely to flourish. Sparking up a conversation with someone at a social event is far more likely to lead to a conversation than walking up to strangers in a car park and asking how

SEPARATING COUPLES

SPLIT THEIR PROPERTY 50/50?

‘Interesting Fact! Divorce Monday is the first Monday back at work after the festive period, when the phone lines of the best divorce lawyers are jammed with exasperated spouses vowing never to suffer another Christmas with their other halves (or their families) again.’

excluded from the property pool. At the

One of the most common myths around separation is that property is split 50/50, no questions asked. There is no rule or requirement for a 50/50 division of property after separation. Each case is decided based on the unique facts of each family and their circumstances.

4. What do you need?

We can break down how to work out a property settlement under the Family Law Act into five steps.

adjusted in light of the ‘future needs’

1. Should we get involved?

5. Did we get it right?

We must determine whether it is just and equitable to divide the assets between the parties. This isn’t as easy as it might sound. Sometimes, just being married or being in a de facto relationship does not mean you automatically become entitled to a share of your partner’s assets. 2. What do you have to divide? Next, we look at what assets, liabilities and superannuation interests the parties have in their own names or in joint names. Values for these items can be agreed between these parties or determined through disclosure of financial documents and independent valuations. There can sometimes be disputes about whether certain assets or liabilities should be included or

end of this step, we can determine the net position of the property pool. 3. What did you do? This step involves assessing the parties’ contributions, such as direct and indirect financial contributions, non-financial contributions, homemaking and parenting contributions. A percentage is assigned at the end of this step to balance each party’s contributions.

Looking into the future, we look at various matters for both parties such as age, income earning capacity, who has primary care of the children, health issues and financial resources. The percentage at Step 3 can be factors to determine the division of the property pool between the parties.

The last step considers whether the property division and its practical effect are just and equitable in all the circumstances of the case. This is intended as a check to make sure that each party got a fair deal that balances their access to cash assets, property and superannuation. Remember that every property settlement will involve different considerations based on the unique circumstances of the relationship and complexities of the property pool.

In Parent to Parent’s 20 years of experience the real need for housing and building solutions has been a frustration for the people we support. Pathways Property Consultants (a division of Parent to Parent) was born from these conversations as a proactive solution to meet this need of our NDIS participants and families. As a not-for-profit organisation, Pathways Property Consultants enjoys operating independently and can help you select the right people to work with, ensuring the right design that best suits your specific personal needs is achieved. 80% OF YOUR PORTFOLIO RETURN?

There are a handful of primary asset classes – cash, fixed interest, shares and property – but all else being equal, choosing how much to invest into each at any given point in time is arguably the biggest factor affecting your returns. In other words, the selection of investments within each asset class is secondary to the asset class allocation.

While understanding risk tolerance is useful, it should not be the ONLY consideration when choosing an asset class allocation. What investor would knowingly pay a price for an investment that is widely considered as being much too expensive? Wouldn’t you find a different investment or wait for it to be a better value price? Yet this is exactly what many investors are doing when blindly investing into superannuation funds. If you are young and have lots of time up your sleeve, this is not such an issue and it may actually be prudent, based on practicalities and cost. But for people nearing retirement or in retirement, it is a very real risk.

The general consensus is that in well diversified portfolios, around 80 per cent of the return is derived from the asset class allocation, making this a critical decision.

In order to navigate the market volatility, it is essential you have some understanding of asset class conditions at any given point in time. This way you will limit losses and increase opportunities.

Given this information, how do you choose your asset allocation? Or does someone choose this for you? And if this is the case, do you know if their approach is suitable and prudent for you? Many people have an industry superannuation fund, so let’s consider what the process often is in that context. It is common for investors to complete a series of questions to help them (or their adviser) to understand their tolerance for risk. From the results of these questions, you are classified into a style of investor, usually something like Defensive, Balanced or Growth, and consequently steered into the fund for that classification. These pre-mixed funds have asset allocations mandates. So, you now have an asset class allocation - but should you just accept this outcome? As an example, you might expect a ‘Balanced’ fund to have around 50 per cent each of defensive-style investments (cash and fixed income) and growth-style investments (shares and property). However, when you look under the hood, some ‘Balanced’ funds have up to 75 per cent in growth assets. It is highly unlikely you will find two funds with identical asset allocations and investment strategies. This means you cannot directly compare their performance - doing so can promote misleading information.

If you are concerned about returns, you need to ensure well-informed, conscious asset class allocation decisions are being made, particularly in volatile markets. m Disclaimer: This information has been prepared by Financial Planners Alliance Pty Ltd, ABN 89 610 060 985: AFSL 485276. MONEY MATTERS

DO YOU KNOW WHAT DRIVES

YOUR MOVE FITNESS

TRANSFORMATION

STARTS IN JUST 30 MINUTES WITH JODIE MARRIOTT AND ROD JONES

You’ve probably heard of the well-known ’30minutes-a-day’ exercise guidelines? Well, these were released back in 1995 but have just been updated by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). You’ll probably find the new guidelines contain some interesting advice and techniques to modernise your training/exercise program.

industry, so it’s great to see it built into the guidelines for a healthy life.

The new basic recommendations for healthy adults under 65 years are:

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE AVERAGE PERSON?

• Do 30 minutes of MODERATE intensity cardio five days a week • Or 20 minutes of VIGOROUS intensity cardio three days a week • And complete STRENGTH training twice per week. This is quite an update, keeping in mind these are the minimum levels recommended for an average adult to maintain health and reduce their risk for chronic disease.

If your goal is weight loss, you’ll want to extend these levels to 60-90 minutes of activity per day. To understand the new guidelines, it’s helpful to look at some definitions: MODERATE INTENSITY: That is hard enough to raise a sweat and increase your heart rate, but you can still talk. As a guide, your heart rate would be 100-130 bpm.

It seems many people live their lives in first or second gear. But to perform at your peak, you need to get your engine into third, fourth or fifth gear occasionally, too. Your body uses different energy systems and chemical processes at different intensities, and it’s best to use them all each week. At YMF, we advise all clients to get some strength training in their week. We’ve seen some incredible results from strength training in a variety of clients, from teenagers to those in their 70s and 80s. Strength is crucial in all stages of life. It helps to maintain good posture, stability and independence as we age. Plus, it stimulates healthy, lean body mass, which has many positive health benefits. Strength training is also vital for anyone suffering (or susceptible to) osteoporosis or osteopenia.

I’m glad you asked! Most people we see in the gym or in our network are active; very few of them are not aware of the health benefits of regular activity. However, these new recommendations define clearly WHAT and HOW OFTEN we should be active. The minimum is five days per week – up from three days – and the type and intensity of the activity have also been specified. What will surprise some people who go for a brisk half-hour walk three times per week is they are NOT meeting the MINIMUM levels of exercise.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR FITTING EXERCISE INTO YOUR BUSY ROUTINE The ACSM’s guidelines come complete with tips to help meet them each day and week. • You can accumulate 30 minutes in short bouts of five minutes or more.

VIGOROUS INTENSITY: This is an intense cardio session. Your heart rate would be higher than a moderate session and you could NOT hold a conversation. As a guide, your heart rate would be 140 bpm-plus. Functional H.I.I.T rooms such as our YMF Fast30 are a great place to achieve this under controlled conditions.

• Mix it up: combine moderate and vigorous intensity into the one cardio session. For example, you can walk and jog together in one session or walk and climb hills or stairs to increase the intensity.

STRENGTH TRAINING: The ACSM defines this as eight to ten different exercises with eight to twelve repetitions of each. Gym or no gym, this is achievable with body weight or equipment-based sets.

• A gym is not a necessity: all you need is a good quality pair of shoes, a plan, some guidance and motivation!

The new recommendations are improved in five ways: 1. Moderate intensity exercise has been clarified to set a recommended minimum- i.e. five days per week. 2. Vigorous exercise has been specifically incorporated as crucial. 3. The light daily activities of routine life are not intense enough. 4. More is better – remember, these are the minimum levels. Exceeding them improves health and further reduces the risk of chronic disease. There is a clear dose-response relationship. 5. Strength training is now recommended to be completed at least twice per week. As a Personal Trainer/Strength and Conditioning Coach, I am pleased that the levels of intensity are specified very clearly. The need for a strength training recommendation has long been understood in the

• Schedule in a specific day and time to exercise each week: treat it like a health appointment.

• Get the whole family involved: parents, spouse, kids and friends can all make good exercise partners and increase adherence and motivation. Higher intensity physical activity can be accumulated through a variety of activities: don’t fall into the trap of thinking you have to run to get your heart rate up. If you don’t like jogging, think of other intense activities you might enjoy. Consider skipping; I believe this to be one of the most under-utilised and underrated exercises. Try one-minute on then one-minute off for ten minutes – a brief but great workout.

Time-wise, just 30 minutes a day is very doable; the most important part is the very first second. a When you start yourmovefitness.com.au

62 ISSUE 91

Hello readers, I sincerely hope you had a great summer, Christmas and New Year.

Maybe like me, you have put on a few kilos and are working on losing it? I did mention in the last issue I was hoping to be 10kg lighter and have only three chins. Well, I didn’t quite get there, and still have four-and-a-half chins and I am no kilos lighter, but I’m happy and that’s what MATTERS most. Being our ‘Transformation Issue’, I know I for one would like to transform my body but, as they say in the commercials, “It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen”. As long as we don’t quit, we are still on the track to success, right? I just had two weeks in Thailand, and it got me thinking that there is something else we could change or transform here in Oz without too much effort. It’s our attitude towards driving. We have all probably been known to say, “He/she cut me off”, “He/she won’t let me in” or “is going too slow or too fast”.

BE GONE! In Thailand, there are people of all ages driving around on mopeds, overtaking each other on both sides of the road, pushing in, speeding up, slowing down, it’s absolute bedlam sometimes! But, with all this going on, everyone just remains placid; there is no road rage whatsoever. They just don’t get upset, yell or abuse one another; they all just get on with their day and you know what, they are so happy.

So, I say let’s take a leaf out of their books and transform our attitudes on the road. Let someone in, don’t speed up to cut them off and if someone is nice and lets you in, give them a little wave; it won’t just make your day, but it may even make theirs as well. Until next time, don’t sweat the small stuff. c

The first stage of the $420 million redevelopment of Sunshine Plaza opened on the 15 November 2018, revealing a fully refurbished Myer and a range of exciting new brands such as Harry Hartog, Tigerlily, T2, Politix, Secrets, Charcoal and Bras N Things. Over 30 new stores opened, including 13 new brands for Sunshine Plaza customers. In addition to the new mall, the centre delivered more than 200 new parking spaces in the Myer rooftop car park, with direct access to the new mall. Several other centre upgrades included the refurbished Food Court and a custom-made nautical-themed kids’ play zone. MAYORAL BUSINESS

INTERNATIONAL BROADBAND SUBMARINE CABLE IS AN ABSOLUTE GAMECHANGER FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST It will help transform our economy and open up enormous opportunities for Queensland. It is clear that our region is fast becoming a digital leader and the submarine cable network will help position us as a key digital trading location from Australia.

over time, lead to faster, more affordable broadband access. I’m pleased to say work on the ground is now underway on the cable landing station, which is due for completion by mid-2019, so it is ready for the physical cable in the first half of 2020. Vertiv, which is a global leader in the design and build of infrastructure for critical technologies, has been awarded the contract to design and construct the cable landing station. Their involvement includes a commitment to maximising the use of locally-based contractors throughout the project. To future-proof council’s investment in the cable landing station, it will be a multi-tenanted facility, designed to eventually accommodate up to four international submarine cables. I would like to pay tribute to all those who have helped make our aspirations for a submarine cable connection for the Sunshine Coast a reality, including our councillors and staff, our partner – the Queensland Government – which has provided funding support for this critical infrastructure investment, and Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien, who has been a long-standing supporter of this project.

Landing onshore at Maroochydore, adjacent to our new CBD, our cable will have Australia’s fastest telecommunications connection to Asia and the second fastest to the United States. In an increasingly digital world, this connectivity will open up enormous opportunities for our region. We expect to attract the attention of the world’s biggest data users and those looking for superior telecommunications and data infrastructure when deciding where to locate their Australian investments. It will stimulate local business and increase Queensland’s competitiveness as well as deliver more than 800 new jobs and generate an expected $927 million in new investment. And I think these figures are conservative.

It is another example of our council being at the forefront of thinking outside the square, securing new revenue sources and pursuing opportunities to generate economic and employment growth as a major dividend for our residents, thus ensuring we continue to be Australia’s healthy, smart, creative region. c

NUMBER BUSINESS

IT’S NOT THE STRONGEST THAT

IT’S THOSE WHO CAN ADAPT TO CHANGE! BY TED FITZGERALD

Transformation always brings CHANGE! Some changes are chosen, MOST get thrust upon us. Many years ago, I had a business that suddenly faced the tariff ‘wall’ - that allowed us to thrive being abolished. So, change I did - and quickly! I think about this experience as I watch the Sunshine Coast mature into one of Australia’s major communities because, in recent decades, two transforming influences have been thrust upon us, namely globalisation and digitisation (the internet). This ‘new order’ comes with both threats and opportunities. Fortunately, I think the Sunshine Coast is well placed to both harvest the opportunities and avoid the threats. Why? There are three main reasons. The first is geography. Until recently, most industry growth and employment were expected to

COACHING IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWTH INDUSTRIES IN BUSINESS TODAY. If you are ready to take the step into a new career FIREUP Coaching is the best coach training available in Australia. happen south and west of Brisbane. The northern corridor to the Sunshine Coast was not supposed to have much ‘industry’. The planners decided this was needed to protect the quality of the SEQ water catchment, which is north of Brisbane and just west of the Sunshine Coast. It was also needed to minimise the generation of industrial smog that the prevailing north-easterly summer winds would then blow directly down into Brisbane, thus aggravating its persistent smog during summer. The effects of containerisation, globalisation and digitisation profoundly altered many of the assumptions upon which the original SEQ Plans were based. Until around the year 2000 manufacturing, often a ‘dirty’ industry, was a key employer. As we became more oriented to the ‘cleaner’ technical, service and distribution industries, the northern corridor has become a more dominant player in overall SEQ growth patterns.

Which leads to my third reason, changes in education on the Sunshine Coast.

The first table shows clearly that the strong growth predicted to happen west towards Ipswich has not been as great as the increase north and south. Why? I think it’s because as long as there is reasonable access to employment, a pleasant environment and affordable housing, most people prefer to settle where there is convenient access to beachside areas for living, weekend recreation and annual holidays.

The second table illustrates how our University of the Sunshine Coast has profoundly transformed the character and capacity of the Coast. Over the last 10 years, the proportion of locals receiving tertiary education was double that of Queensland and Australia.

The second reason is the decline of manufacturing as a major source of employer and the growth of the ‘Creative Class’, as proposed by Richard Florida a few years ago. These professionals are the classic knowledge-based people working in healthcare, science, business, finance, law and education. The submarine cable soon to connect the Sunshine Coast directly to the world will provide the ‘Creative Class’ with an affordable data connection with greater speed, reliability and

Unlike many less favoured communities, the Sunshine Coast is harnessing the transformation that comes from globalisation and the fully connected digital world. Well done you! c

EUMUNDI MARKETS

A 40-YEAR TRANSFORMATION

Original Eumundi Markets – Celebrating 40 Years Iconic Sunshine Coast attraction – the Original Eumundi Markets – celebrates its 40th year in 2019. Since the Original Eumundi Markets began on Saturday 23 March 1979, it has grown to be one of the largest craft and artisan markets in Australia, with a visitation of around 1.2million people per annum. Originally called the Eumundi Village Market, the market started with three stalls and a total of eight visitors not including family - with a grand total of $30 taken. When the market started, Eumundi was a small quiet town of one main street, with farms spreading from Belli to Noosaville. In the late 1970s, the social calendar in Eumundi still included dances in the School of Arts hall and regular cattle and horse sales. Eumundi town and the location of the markets under the glorious spreading Memorial Fig Trees still manages to maintain a wonderfully relaxed village atmosphere, attracting many visitors and people who, for many reasons, have chosen to live in and near the town.

74 ISSUE 91

Now a true Sunshine Coast icon and a must-see destination, the market will be giving back and wants its visitors and followers to share in the celebrations, too. In the lead up to the 40th anniversary, the Original Eumundi Markets will hold 40 days of giveaways through its social media, starting on 12 February. There will be some amazing prizes up for grabs from some of the many talented stallholders, along with market vouchers. Visit the Original Eumundi Markets before 23 March and, if you spend over $30 in one transaction, you will get an entry into a pool of great prizes, including market vouchers. Just remember to ask the stallholder to give you an entry form. The Original Eumundi Market continues to be run by the Eumundi & District Historical Association (EHA), a not-for-profit association which supports local community and historic projects and has always ensured that the market has an emphasis on handmade products, with the ethos of ‘make it, bake it, sew it, grow it’. Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre, which is run by the EHA and will be hosting an exhibition of the history of the market from Saturday 23 March until Saturday 1 June. Taking place in the Wan’din’in arts space, it will include a mocked up retro stall circa the 1980s. All are welcome to the opening on 23 March at 2pm. The 40th anniversary celebrations are supported by the Sunshine Coast Council.

JENNIFER FORSTER

THE POWER OF A PEACEFUL WOMAN:

49 WAYS TO DROP THE ARMOUR AND DEFUSE THE DRAMA WRITTEN BY SOPHIA AULD

Long-time local Jennifer Forster shares how she TRANSFORMED the way she lives, works, parents and loves.

On first impression, you could be forgiven for thinking that Jennifer Forster is a woman with no need for transformation. After all, she’s a successful businesswoman, coach, women’s advocate, mum-of-two, and soon-to-be-published author. But things haven’t always been that way for Jennifer. In fact, almost 15 years ago, she was trying to keep everything together on the outside, while on the inside she was screaming, “stop the ride, I want to get off”. Jennifer’s internal turmoil started her on a journey of self-development, exploring the role of mindset and the limits of human potential. Beginning about 12 years ago, she studied life coaching, testing what she was learning on herself. “I came to turn my life into a giant classroom,” says Jennifer, who is originally from Tasmania. “I have studied it, put it under a microscope, dissected it, learned, unlearned and relearned everything I ever knew about myself. I was relentless.” Back then, she studied teachings from the founders of personal transformation like Maxwell Maltz, Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins and Napoleon Hill. Jennifer says she had first understood transformation as an intellectual concept. However, it was only after she discovered that for any kind of transformation to occur, it must become an experiential process, that she became fully aware of the power of her own daily practices. 76 ISSUE 91

“And in doing so, I have reconstructed the woman I am today,” Jennifer says. “Now, more than anything, I experience joy, peace and total elation on a daily basis.” And not only has Jennifer’s reconstruction impacted her personal life, but it has also transformed her career. She has created three successful businesses across three different industries during her 25 years on the Sunshine Coast.

“BUT MY TRUE LOVE AND GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS HAVE BEEN IN THE COACHING AND FITNESS INDUSTRY,” SHE SAYS. Now, Jennifer is bringing together all that she has learned and experienced in a book she believes will help women who face challenges like she did 15 years ago. Called ‘The Power of a Peaceful Woman: 49 ways to drop the armour and defuse the drama’, Jennifer describes it as “a practical memoir and resource based on my own life experiences and the practices I have developed which have completely transformed the way I live, the way I work, the way I parent and the way I love.

“IT’S FOR ANY WOMAN WHO IS AT A CROSSROADS IN HER LIFE. SHE MAY BE FEELING BURNT OUT, LOST AND OVERWHELMED AND KNOWS, DEEP DOWN, SHE HAS SOMEHOW WANDERED OFF COURSE.” Scheduled for release in April, Jennifer says that writing and publishing the book is her proudest achievement to date, aside from her two beautiful children, of course. She is currently working on preparations for the book launch. And while you wait for it to come out, Jennifer shares her top tip: “The thing that has truly transformed my life and every relationship in it, is my daily practice to look for ‘what’s so right’ in each day,” she says. “This has been a daily practice in my life for over six years. Whilst the simplicity of it is easy to dismiss, the power in the practice will actually rewire the neural pathways in the brain. If practised consistently, like me these days, it is almost impossible for me to see ‘what’s wrong’ in any situation. Unlike practising gratitude, which is also super important and something I practice daily too, looking for what’s so right is also a way to remove judgement from your life and the world around you.” Apart from this strategy, Jennifer tries to live her life by three philosophies, which she says, “incorporate the transformation superpower of awareness”. This includes awareness of self, love and others: • “I am human first, enlightened second” • “No matter the question, love is the answer” • “People just do what people just do” She believes that the collective consciousness of humanity is shifting

Photography by Paula Brennan

and expanding. “But with over seven billion people on the planet, we all have a part to play in this process,” she says. “My book is my contribution to this.” Jennifer points out that her techniques are not “magic” or just wishing for a good life. They work, but you need to be committed to daily practice to reap the results. Following the launch of her book, Jennifer will be holding workshops and speaking events. She is also planning online courses. “My goal is to get this book into the hands of every woman who has never read a self-development book – and those that have, too!” she says. In her spare time, Jennifer – who describes herself as a free-spirited gypsy – loves to adventure, explore, wander and travel. “Nothing fuels my heart and soul more than to do something or see something I have never done or seen before,” she says. “So, I am thinking a global book tour would cover this!” And for anyone who is reading this and wondering where they should even begin their own transformation process, she has this advice to share: “I would offer this question,” she says. “Ask yourself, ‘What is the one thing right now that matters most, that will move me towards what matters most to me’.” e www.jenniferforster.com

The first number is the number of years you are up to, so it will begin for the first year with zero. Then the Day is the day you are up to in that year. My Magic number is currently 0 39 and I have to tell you, I am pretty proud of that number.

MY MAGIC WORD FOR THE YEAR

Transformation

Choose three words that you will focus on for the day. For example, if you need to drink more water, you could put WATER. If you need to be strong for something, you could include STRENGTH, or maybe you need CONFIDENCE. Maybe you need to remind yourself to focus on LOVE or KINDNESS. Whatever daily focus you choose, just write it here and then you can simply decide to live into those words.

TO DO TODAY ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔

Choosing your word for the year is an essential part of the process; this needs to be a word that is your MAJOR, MAJOR FOCUS for the current year. Have a think about it now; what is something you absolutely want to focus on this year? My word for the year is TRANSFORMATION in both my WEALTH AND HEALTH.

MY 1000% PERCENT DAILY PROMISE TO MYSELF AND

I 1000% promise to not eat anything whatsoever between meals and the meals I do eat will be 100% healthy.

Start by completing the day, date, month and year Eg. Monday

TODAY’S SCHEDULE

Your to-do list is not appointments, but your list of things you need to do. I use a highlighter for my MUST-DOs, and I have a little game where I can’t go to sleep that night until the highlighted things are done. Move things to tomorrow that you don’t complete. I truly enjoy ticking things off my to-do list once they are done; it gives me a true sense of achievement.

Your daily promise is where the gold is. Make an absolute promise to yourself that you will lean into JOY. That you will choose JOY. Then any time something comes along to take away that JOY, go back to your promise. You can also use this promise section for food, for exercise for wealth creation, whatever you want, but the most important thing is PROMISING YOURSELF TO 1000% LEAN INTO JOY. We can so easily promise ourselves and break those promises over and over but often, when we 1000 per cent promise to ourselves and someone else, we are less likely to break it. So, make your promise, write the person’s name there and ask them to be your accountability buddy. Then take a picture of this and send it to them each day. Whatever your word is for the year, think about that and what you need to PROMISE to do today in order to step into that word. What ACTIONS do you need to take? What do you need to do?

MAGIC MOMENTS DAILY REFLECTION The most magical thing about yesterday was: (in three words)

Running New Clients Pride Have a look at yesterday. What was the most magical thing about the day? This is about reminding yourself and teaching yourself to constantly look for what’s right, remembering that what you focus on grows. Practicing focusing on the good stuff means you are constantly looking for it. Our minds are actually naturally wired to look for what’s wrong, so we have to train them towards looking for what’s right. This practice helps us to really start looking for (and finding) what’s right all around us.

MAGIC INSPIRATION

MAGIC MOVEMENT

‘If you say so, whatever you say becomes your truth; so choose very carefully the truth you wish to live into.

Today I:

by Vickie Magic Each day of the Daily Design Diary you are given some fresh inspiration by way of a daily MAGIC QUOTE, written by me, Vickie Magic; something to inspire you to keep going.

MY MAGIC LIFE I am so grateful for:

I am so grateful right now for Magic, my home, the beach, my children, my friends, and new clients in the mag. This is again about getting into the habit of looking for things you already have and are grateful for. This is about reminding yourself constantly about how grateful and lucky you are for having them. Being grateful for things truly does bring you more things to be grateful for. Like attracts like. It’s like the Law of Attraction; the more you see what you have, the more you attract to yourself things to be grateful for. It’s almost like MAGIC.

Did Pilates Ran 7km Get yourself into the habit of MOVEMENT’you know you want to. Just write here everything you do to move your body – run, walk, ride, swim, Pilates, yoga, just to name a few. Anytime you move write it down. Moving your body makes you feel MAGICAL.

TODAY’S STEP COUNT

14,303

Your smart watch or smart phone can tell you how many steps you have done for the day. Play a game with yourself to see if you can increase each day. Or set a daily goal. I set a 10,000-step daily goal.

MY GOAL/S REMINDER

Weight loss 30 kilos Five new Coaching Clients Just write down your goals for the year to remind yourself each and every day of a few things you really do want to achieve. Look at your goal and imagine yourself moving towards it each and every day. This takes seconds, but it really is MAGIC.

MAGIC MOMENTUM

MY MAGIC WORD FOR THE DAY

The best thing about today: today’s journal written as though it has already happened)

Commitment

Today was amazing I got a new client and a PB on my run.

You have your overall Magic Word for the Year, but each day you get the opportunity to choose a NEW WORD just for that DAY. Words like FOCUS, LOVE, ATTITUDE, KINDNESS, SALES - whatever you know you want to focus on for that day. Remind yourself of this word throughout the day. The most important thing here is that you choose a word that inspires YOU in a positive way.

TODAY’S WATER ✔

Encourage yourself to drink more of natures gift. Tick each time you drink a glass of water.

This is a little bit of a different way of journaling. Write about your day at the beginning of the day, as though it was the end of the day. This sets your intention for success and writing it down in advance helps to set you up for the success you want. Visualise yourself already achieving the things you want to achieve each day. At first this will seem odd, but you will get used to setting and then living into a daily intention.

MAGIC MEDITATION/ VISUALISATION/GRATITUDE IN ADVANCE

✔ Daily meditation and visualisation, including giving gratitude for what’s coming your way,

is one of the keys for success and joy and manifestation of whatever you want for yourself and your life. It’s just taking a few moments to set your focus and your intention for the coming day. I facilitate an online daily LIVE meditation at 6am Monday to Thursday and Saturdays, and 5.50am on Fridays. Of course, if that’s too early for you, you can listen at any time of the day. The Facebook group for this is called The Magic Circle with Vickie Magic; I would love you to join me. Why not consider making a promise to yourself to give this a try for the next 30 days? I truly believe that it will make a MASSIVE DIFFERENCE for you; it certainly did for me. It helps to keep me focused on my intentions and it helps to remind me of all the MAGICAL things in my world and my life. It will only take you around five minutes to complete and will be the best five minutes of your day. I am currently putting this together into a sixmonth journal you will be able to purchase on its own or as part of ‘The Magic Success Formula for Health and Wealth and JOY. When it comes living the life of our dreams it is 100% up to us to make it happen. For example when it comes to food and diets, I can tell you I have tried every single one that has ever been devised, and none of them worked for me. Well, the truth is they all work, short-term, but nothing worked for me longterm and the reason was that I always felt like I was on a diet. There was always something I couldn’t eat - no dairy, no grain, no sugar, no alcohol, no this, no that. I constantly felt deprived, constantly felt on the outer and, consequently, I wouldn’t be able to stick to anything for any length of time. Well, as a part of this new program I’ve been able to devise a program that incorporates everything I need in every area of my life me and it has finally completely set me free. I can honestly say I have never felt so FREE in my life. TRANSFORMATION IS MINE IN 2019. By the way, it doesn’t matter what you want to transform; this can work for pretty much anything you want to transform, be it your mindset, your bank account, you love life, or yeah, like me, your body. If you would like to know more about it, send me a message on 0433 198 868 or email me at vmagic@bmmag.com.au and I will give you all the information you need to get started. It’s seriously the best thing I have ever done and is facilitating my transformation at a rate of knots. But you don’t have to use the program just for weight loss or health; you can use it for anything at all that you want to achieve.

It’s all about HEALTH, WEALTH AND JOY, and they most definitely all go hand in hand. f www.themagicsuccessformula.com

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

DOWNTIME AND RELAXATION

can transform your productivity tenfold Matters Magazine owners Vickie and Dranko Magic recently visited the beautiful Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort in Phuket. Living just 35 seconds from the beach here on the Sunshine Coast, they decided that they wanted a hilltop location with a view of the beach rather than to be on the beach itself. Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort stepped up to the plate and they instantly fell in love with the place. The view was magnificent, the service amazing and the food was the best food on the Island.

It was simply sensational. On day one they were invited to welcome drinks to hear from resort owner Hajo von Keller. They were so impressed with what they heard they wanted to know more and to share Hajo’s story of passion, purpose and determination. Hajo’s family was always entrepreneurial - his father ran a successful sports equipment company in Munich, Bavaria - but Hajo’s route to commercial success has been quite different. The family business was a thriving business environment and it was always thought he would follow his father and brother into the company. However, destiny had other ideas and an epiphany of sorts occurred when Hajo came to Bangkok in 1997 to be nearer the main manufacturing base in China. He visited Phuket and fell in love with the place and the people. His father encouraged him to pursue his passion in this promising environment and the rest, as they say, is history. 84 ISSUE 91

The Mangosteen Ayurveda & Wellness Resort was born. Hajo wanted it to be different; he wanted it to be innovative in every way possible. In his own words, Hajo says,

“I wanted to get away from hotel stereotypes, to create a new-style resort that did not hug the beach’s edge, but would be set apart, preferably on a hillside that possessed panoramic, all-round views of the island. The competitive price of land was also a factor, as was the choice of a location that did not threaten to become another concrete jungle.” Hajo was genuinely concerned about environmental issues; he truly wanted to create a green resort. He decided not only to retain all the existing trees on his hilly site but to add shrubs, palms, hedges and natural pathways that could both conceal and link the individual villas. Distinctively octagonal in shape, the construction of each villa involved the use of both natural materials and new technology, including load-bearing walls 20 cm thick. Set in its own garden, every villa is an individual oasis of tranquility, the air-ventilated floors and high ceilings an embodiment of Hajo’s belief that the climate inside the villas should match the healthy climate outside the eight walls. Still relatively undeveloped, Rawai ticked all the boxes.

‘Double Expressions’ // Jenn and Leo

Re

ners t Ow sor and Rose von Kell er // Hajo

Hajo’s life and future changed forever when he met Rose in March 2004. Their connection was instant and complementary in both business and life, and they joined forces one year later. They work effortlessly well as a team. Hajo is the first to admit that Rose’s contribution is paramount to the success of the Resort. He sticks more to the day-to-day running of the business and the marketing of the resort while Rose, with her excellent Thai connections, her hotel management background and her knowledge of local and national regulations, deals with everyone and everything else. Rose was born in Chiang Rai; her education took her to Bangkok where she attended Vittayanukorn and St Theresa Colleges, majoring respectively in Hotel and Tourism and Business Administration. She went on to graduate from UTCC (University of Thai Chamber of Commerce), before specialising in Spa Management at Bangkok’s celebrated Mahidol University. Her professional career has been remarkable for its breadth and variety. Starting as a secretary in 1991, her obvious talents meant rapid promotion with a range of companies, including The Mandarin Oriental in Koh Samui and The Colony Resort in Kamala. After a foray into real estate and property development here in Phuket, she spent seven years in publishing and event planning with Artasia Press as sales manager. No wonder her English is impeccable. The health and well-being of guests is a primary concern. From the outset, a luxurious spa was incorporated in the overall concept and, under the expert guidance of Rose, it has blossomed into a full-scale Ayurveda Spa, a more holistic approach embracing integrated diets, detox and anti-aging programmes.

It’s important to Rose and Hajo that the Mangosteen remains a family enterprise. Family has always been important to them both. Having been very much supported by their own individual families, they appreciate the importance of true family values. They run the resort with passion and purpose and treat their team like family; the retention of the team at the resort is proof that people love working there. Both Rose’s daughters (from a previous relationship) have been educated in Switzerland: Ying holds a master’s degree in Hotel, Resort and Spa Management, while younger daughter Apissara, is studying Hospitality Management at Lausanne’s famous EHL Institute. Their hope and dream is that both girls will, in due course, become part of Mangosteen’s exciting future. Since 2017 the resort has offered activity programmes including yoga and meditation classes, such as Singing Bowls Meditation. Indeed, the spa has remained a crucial key to the resort’s success. It became the first boutique resort in Thailand to receive the official five-star award. One thing they absolutely loved was a live band that played called ‘Double Expressions’. We got talking to band members Jenn and Leo and found out they had moved to Phuket from Italy. Their music was absolutely sensational, they enjoyed them so much that they followed them to another venue. They just loved their vibe, their genre and their sound, Jenn is so passionate and just oozes soul and Leo has an unbelievable talent. Their take was they could be on a big stage anywhere in the world, if they chose to be. Jenn shared that she missed Italy, of course, but also how when she met world travelling musician Leo, she knew that her heart was his and she knew that while Italy would always be home in her heart, her home was wherever he was and that felt good. Vickie and Magic loved almost every second of their experience at the resort; the sales pitch for the holiday club, I guess, was the only part of their experience that wasn’t their cup of tea. However, they do realise and live by the philosophy of ‘To each their own’ so I guess that for some people the Travel Club is a godsend and clearly something that the resort is passionate about and if you travel a lot maybe it’s a great thing to be part of. e

Overall from us we score 9 out of 10 . . . and YES, we would definitely return.
