“THOSE FIRST STEPS ARE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF, LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE YOUR VISION AND CURATE THE INSIGHT AND DATA TO GUIDE DECISION-MAKING.”
Dear Matters Magazine Readers,
It has been one year since Shari and I took over Matters Magazine, which is in its 18th year on the Sunshine Coast. This past year has been filled with incredible memories, challenges, and a few surprises. My career started almost 20 years ago as a University of the Sunshine Coast graduate working with Procter & Gamble, building partnerships with local retailers and distributors—a connector between the brand and its partners. I used insight, strategy, and vision to forge those partnerships over the long term.
The largest surprise for me over the past year is just how much my first year with Matters Magazine would mirror my first year with a multinational company.
Those first steps are to introduce yourself, learn how to communicate your vision and curate the insight and data to guide decision-making. It has taken me 12 months and three issues to understand Matters Magazine. Our role is to connect you, the reader, to the Sunshine Coast business ecosystem. Tens of thousands in our region share your journey as a professional, owner, or entrepreneur. You are supported, and you are not alone.
My first year with Procter & Gamble was lonely. The head office was in Sydney, but I was on the Sunshine Coast. I had to learn what it meant to represent a company through my interactions with customers instead of mentorship. I had no colleagues, just a distant manager. I did not realise how much support was available because I was new and didn’t know where to look.
Over the past few weeks, I have spoken to over 60 business owners individually. Each of them shared that feeling of disconnect. They did not know where to go for help.
I talked to them about the available programs by the Queensland Government, including grants, business courses from the University and TAFE, the free events hosted by business and industry groups, networking groups like BNI, Bx and LinkedIn Local, and the introductions I could make to people in a similar industry. I can see them light up; the same way I did when I was finally introduced to the company I was working for and given the full range of support and training. I felt empowered and re-energised. I have helped many feel the same way this past month with a simple introduction.
That is the power of Matters. The role we play as your connector. To borrow a line from Craig Josic from Silicon Coast, “Collaboration is the new competition.” The 107th issue of Matters Magazine is a collaborative effort from the vast corners of the Sunshine Coast’s business ecosystem. In this issue, you will discover the support and training available to you. You will read stories of aspirational family-owned businesses, exceptional advice from local professionals and great offers from local businesses.
To our advertisers and contributors, thank you. Your support has been invaluable. You have helped us curate a magazine that goes beyond engaging, helpful content to a genuine resource of support and guidance for a business community feeling disconnected from one another. Over the past 12 months, 113 organisations have contributed to Matters Magazine. With premium local content, we have reached tens of thousands locally and worldwide. As we move into 2025, I invite you to join the Matters community and share our mission to connect.

“FAMILY IS THE FOUNDATION THAT SUPPORTS US, WHETHER IT’S THOSE WE SHARE OUR HOMES WITH OR THOSE WE BUILD DREAMS ALONGSIDE. IN THE STRENGTH OF THESE RELATIONSHIPS, WE FIND OUR GREATEST SUCCESSES AND CREATE LEGACIES THAT ENDURE.”
Dear Matters Magazine Readers,
In this issue of Matters Magazine, we explore the theme of family—an integral part of both life and business. Family can take many forms: our loved ones, business colleagues, employees, clients, and even the broader communities that form our support network.
Family plays a vital role in shaping our experiences, decisions and ultimately, our success.
For those running family-owned businesses, the blend of personal and professional life can bring both rewards and challenges. The shared victories are sweeter, but the tough decisions can hit harder. This mix of love, passion and perseverance often drives family businesses to succeed and build legacies that span generations, as Adam from Cursio Property Group shares in this issue.
For business owners like Elvis and Bianca Pereira of Lauxen Cleaning Solutions, their team is their family. Their connection with employees runs deep, creating a sense of loyalty and shared purpose. Walking into the office each day isn’t just about work—it’s about continuing to build something meaningful with people who feel like family. This bond is reflected in the strong, supportive environment they have cultivated, fostering resilience and forward-thinking success.
Our professional networks also act as a kind of family. Groups like BNI, Bx, B2B Sunshine Coast, and the local Chamber of Commerce bring together mentors, peers and clients who challenge, support and collaborate with us. These relationships remind us that no one succeeds alone. The connections we build can profoundly impact our personal and professional lives, providing the guidance and encouragement we all need at times.
This issue features inspiring stories of entrepreneurs who have turned family dreams into business realities, such as Danny and Kristy Cook of Coastal Lawn Solutions. You’ll also hear from companies like East Coast Freight Distribution, where the sense of belonging within the team has fostered strong business foundations. You’ll also read about families like the DeCourcys from Brightaire Property Services, who are creating a legacy for future generations.
Our cover story features Judy Bartlett and her son Nick from Rapid Response First Aid as they navigate the pursuit of work-life balance. Like so many, they are learning that this balance requires creativity, perseverance and a whole lot of love.
We’re also thrilled to bring you special messages from key figures who offer their insights from various perspectives: Dominique Lamb, the Queensland Small Business Commissioner; Rosanna Natoli, the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast; and Professor Mark Loon, Dean of the School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Together, they provide invaluable insights from a state, local and educational viewpoint, enriching this conversation around the evolving role of family in business.
Family is at the heart of everything we do—it motivates us, challenges us and supports us personally and professionally. Whether family means your loved ones at home, colleagues at work, or the network that uplifts you, this issue is dedicated to you.
Thank you for being part of the Matters Magazine family, especially my family and my Matters team, who have supported Luke and me throughout this amazing first year as owners of this Sunshine Coast icon. We hope this issue resonates with your experiences and reminds you of the incredible power of family—in whatever form it takes.

Your business matters: accessing support and advocacy
s the Queensland Small Business Commissioner, I want to take a moment to introduce myself and share
how our office can support you in your small business journey. My path started in a rather unconventional way—dressed as a clown handing out flyers. Since then, I’ve grown into a role where I can help small businesses thrive, drawing from my experience as a construction lawyer in Sydney and then as the Chief Executive Officer for National Retail Australia.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned during my career is the importance of communication. When faced with challenges, I find it’s essential to pick up the phone and discuss the situation directly. Whether the news is good or bad, having someone to talk to can make all the difference.
At the Queensland Small Business Commissioner’s (QSBC) office, we believe that every business deserves access to clear guidance and support.
At QSBC, our mission is simple: to enhance the operating environment for the more than 482,000 small businesses across Queensland and reduce the time and costs of resolving disputes involving small business. Our assistance team is here for you, ready to take your calls and offer support on a range of issues. Whether you’re facing a dispute involving your commercial lease or with another business, we’re here to help you navigate the path to a better outcome.
on these ratios. If you’re experiencing financial hardship and need support, remember that free financial counselling is available through the Queensland Government. You can connect with a counsellor without any complicated applications—give us a call.
In addition to our assistance team, we have a strategy and engagement team dedicated to advocating for better outcomes for small businesses. We engage with government across all departments and at all levels, with peak bodies and industries, to understand your concerns, needs, and aspirations. We also work with local councils through our Small Business Friendly Program to help provide the opportunities small businesses need to thrive.
Starting and running a business is a brave endeavour; you don’t have to face it alone. Seeking help early, especially for financial or compliance issues, can set you on the right path. While there’s no one-sizefits-all solution, numerous resources are available to alleviate some of the pressure you may feel. Don’t forget to check what your local government is offering. Many councils provide free support, information, and even grants to help your business thrive. For instance, the Sunshine Coast’s ‘Level Up’ initiative is designed to help you learn, connect, and build your business.
Recently, we’ve noticed a significant increase in calls to our assistance line—about a 54% uptick, particularly regarding business-to-business debt claims. It’s a crucial reminder that cash flow is king for small businesses. Proactively managing payments can significantly impact your financial health, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.
Monitoring your financial health is so important, and understanding key metrics like your profit margin and payroll costs can help you make informed decisions. We encourage you to explore our ‘Beyond the Pandemic’ report on our website, which provides valuable benchmarks
Remember, we’re here to listen and assist you. No issue is too big or too small—your business matters. Together, we can navigate the challenges ahead.
Dominique Lamb // Queensland Small Business Commissioner commissioner@qsbc.qld.gov.au
Dear Readers of Matters Magazine,
Iwant to take this opportunity to speak directly to you, especially those of you who are part of the small family business community here on the Sunshine Coast.
I know the challenges, risks, and rewards of running a family business. My family has been there—from running a restaurant and fruit shops in Caloundra to managing a gallery in Mooloolaba—and we’ve experienced the ups and downs of being your own boss.
Family businesses truly underpin the economy here on the Sunshine Coast. Our local economy thrives because of people like you—the small business owners who pour their heart and soul into making their dream a reality. Our unique lifestyle and location lend themselves to that entrepreneurial spirit, where couples and even intergenerational family members work together to create something special. Owning a business is more than just a job—it’s about orchestrating your future and creating the lifestyle you want for your family. I know it’s a dream for many, yet it’s a dream that takes incredible courage to pursue.
And I know how tough it can be. It doesn’t always go according to your beautiful grand plan, as I’ve experienced firsthand. When my family’s business didn’t work out, it was earth-shattering. We lost our home and everything we had worked for, and we had to move in with family to regroup. That was one of the hardest moments of my life, but it gave me a deep understanding of the struggles so many small business owners face. I understand the courage you need to start a business, the tenacity you need to go on every single day, day after day, because you believe in something.
Now, as your Mayor, I can use my own experiences to shape policies and decisions that support you and make a difference in your daily lives. My goal is to ensure that our local government is right there beside you, helping you through the tough times and celebrating your successes.
We have several initiatives to support small businesses on the Coast, such as the Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS), the Small Business Friendly Program, and the Local Business Support Program. These initiatives offer resources, tools, networking, and one-to-one tailored support. I encourage you to contact our Economic Development Team and take advantage of these programs. We want to see you thrive.
Running a business can sometimes feel overwhelming, and I know that feeling too well. There were times when I would ask myself, “How will I keep going here? What am I doing?” And that’s when I would say to myself: Left foot. Right foot. Breathe It’s a simple mantra, but sometimes it’s all you need to get through that moment, that hour, or that day. It can help you find the strength to keep going and stay hopeful about what’s coming next.
For me, maintaining balance is also essential. I prioritise exercising every day — I go for a walk with my beautiful cavoodle, which keeps me grounded. After that, I take a hot shower, and then I turn it to ice cold. As I stand in the cold water, I say to myself, I can do anything, and I can do hard things. That daily ritual helps me face whatever challenges come my way. And every day, I am thankful for the many blessings in my life.
I want to leave you with this: running a business is hard work and incredibly rewarding. There will be setbacks and moments of doubt. When things aren’t exactly going my way, I say, “If this is the worst thing that happens today, it’s still a pretty good day!”
Remember, you are not alone. You have resources, programs, and people ready to support you. Don’t hesitate to reach out, lean on your community, and know we’re here to help.
I believe in the power of small businesses to shape the future of the Sunshine Coast. With courage, persistence, and a belief in yourself, there’s always a way forward, no matter how tough things get. The future for small businesses on the Coast is bright, and I am honoured to be on this journey with you.
Warm regards,
Rosanna Natoli // Mayor of the Sunshine Coast mayor@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Dear Friends,
Iam excited to be the new Dean of the School of Business and Creative Industries at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC). It is my privilege to be working alongside the School’s outstanding scholars in supporting the region’s sustainable growth through innovation in our education programs and the impact of our research. The ambition of the University, the energy of the region, and the dynamism of the business professionals and entrepreneurs here are a real inspiration.
As our region faces its next phase of growth, we aim to match and support its ambitions and aspirations. Last year, the School achieved a significant milestone as we were awarded accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
AACSB accreditation is recognised worldwide as the highest standard of quality, with only six per cent of the world’s leading business schools achieving AACSB accreditation. This achievement recognises our world-standard in teaching, research, and societal impact.
By elevating the knowledge and skills of the region’s workforce for the future, we will attract like-minded, high-value industries that provide meaningful careers and support for start-ups, small and medium-sized firms in its value chain. With a partnering mindset, we will continue to reinforce a virtuous circle between the University, industry, local and state government, and our communities - where we are informed by our stakeholders, which allows us to better shape outcomes for all of us. We do so through our education, by producing a highly skilled workforce, and through our research that spurs innovations in industry, enhances the sustainability of our environment and benefits the overall quality of life for everyone in our region.
In the School and UniSC, we pride ourselves in equipping
our students to be adaptable in navigating dynamic business environments, where tomorrow’s businesses and jobs do not exist today, and to be aspirational in creating trailblazing enterprises. Whilst the School is regionally minded, we continue to amplify our global connections to create pathways for our students to become leaders in their chosen fields on the international stage and to ensure our research continues to be world standard.
The Sunshine Coast and surrounding region remains one of the most desirable places for families of all shapes and sizes to live, grow and bring up the next generation. Like a family, the University, industry, local and state government, and our communities need to continue to support and communicate with one another through our existing, as well as ever evolving and deepening links. As our relationship with one another reaches another stage of maturation, we go from a symbiotic relationship of mutual benefit to one of synergism where our combined efforts will be greater than the individual parts for a greater benefit to all.
I would love to hear from you as to how we can better collaborate so we can shape a brighter future for our region’s businesses, environment, communities, families, and all fortunate enough to call this place home.
Thank you and all the best.

ave you ever wondered what you would do in a lifeor-death situation? Would you know how to save the life of a loved one if the unthinkable happened?
Judy Bartlett, a seasoned paediatric registered nurse and the founder of Rapid Response First Aid and iCare Training, encounters these questions daily. For Judy, teaching first aid isn’t just a job; it’s a calling, a mission driven by the belief that the proper knowledge can be the difference between life and death for a family member, a friend or a neighbour.
FROM GRIEF TO EMPOWERMENT
Judy recalls an encounter she had with a young couple. They walked into her training centre, visibly anxious and burdened by a painful past. As they shared their story, Judy learned that they had lost their first child in a tragic pool drowning accident. A toy left by the pool gate held it open,
and in a matter of minutes, their lives were forever changed. Despite the CPR instruction sign posted on their pool gate, panic had set in, and the couple found themselves unable to recall the steps needed to save their child. Their grief was compounded by the overwhelming guilt of feeling unprepared.
“Every day, they live with the ‘what ifs’,” Judy recalls. “They kept saying, ‘If only we had known what to do.’ That’s why they came to me—they’re expecting another child, and they want to make sure they’re ready. They want to know that if something happens, they can act.”
For Judy, this story is a poignant reminder of why first aid training is so critical. It’s not just about ticking a box or completing a requirement— it’s about empowerment, about giving people the confidence to act when it matters most. “The more you know, the less you panic,” Judy says. “That’s what I try to teach. I want people to walk away feeling prepared, feeling like they can make a difference.”
FROM CHAOS TO COLLABORATION: A FAMILY BUSINESS EVOLVES
Judy’s passion for teaching and commitment to making a difference have been the driving forces behind Rapid Response First Aid for over 15 years. However, with the addition of iCare Training nursing skills workshops, the business grew, and so did the challenges. Managing everything—from scheduling, training and accounts to marketing and logistics—became overwhelming, leaving Judy with little time to focus on what she loved most: her four children and live-in mother and connecting with people.
The turning point came when Judy’s son, Nicholas (Nick) Gerhard, joined the business. Fresh from a five-year stint teaching English in Slovakia, Nick brought with him a unique blend of skills and a fresh perspective. “When I came back, I saw how much Mum was juggling,” Nick recalls. “There were so many gaps—technologically and operationally. I wanted to help turn things around.”
After completing his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Nick immediately began overhauling outdated systems and streamlining operations. “Mum was still using a paper diary for bookings,” he laughs. “We’d have days when she thought five people were in a course, and fifteen would show up. Or worse, no one would show up at all. I knew we needed a better system.”
With Nick’s help, Rapid Response First Aid and iCare Training embraced the digital age. He implemented a cloudbased system that integrates everything from staff schedules to customer bookings, making the business more efficient and allowing them to offer an expanded range of courses, including Advanced Resuscitation and Occupational First Aid. The result was a more professional operation and a more responsive and adaptable business.
But the transition wasn’t without its challenges. Judy, who had managed on her own for so long, found it difficult to adjust to the new systems. “It was a big change,” she admits. “I’m used
to doing things a certain way, and suddenly, everything was different. But I could see the benefits, and having Nick there to guide me made all the difference.”
Their partnership has brought the business to new heights. Together, they are working towards becoming a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), which would give them greater control over their course content and allow them to expand their offerings. “It’s a big step,” Nick says, “but it’s where we need to go if we want to grow.”
A SHARED VISION AND A COMMON GOAL
Beyond the practical changes and business goals, what truly sets Rapid Response First Aid apart is the bond that Judy and Nick share. Working together has deepened their relationship, allowing them to support each other in ways that go beyond the workplace. “It’s not just about business,” Judy says. “It’s about family. Having Nick involved means I have someone who understands my pressures and challenges. We’re in this together, and that makes all the difference.”
For Nick, working with his mum is more than just a job—it’s a way to give back, to show his appreciation for everything Judy has done. “Mum has always worked so hard,” he says. “I remember her being out late, running courses, doing everything to keep the business going. I want to help take some of that load off her shoulders. I want to get the business to a point where she can enjoy life outside of work.”
Their shared commitment to the business and to each other has created a unique work environment, one that blends professionalism with a deep sense of care and support. “There’s something special about working in a family business,” Judy reflects. “You’re not just working for a paycheck. You’re working towards a shared goal, something that matters to both of you. It’s about building something together, something that’s more than just a business.”
EMPOWERING FAMILIES ONE COURSE AT A TIME
Judy and Nick’s story powerfully reminds us of the impact that one family can have on a community. Through Rapid Response First Aid and iCare Training, they are not just teaching skills—they are empowering people to make a difference, to save lives, and to protect the ones they love.
“When we hear from people who say, ‘I learned something today that could save a life,’ it’s all worth it. That’s why we do this,” Nick says.
Their mutual commitment extends beyond their own business. Nick is also launching Skywind Falconry, a venture combining his love for birds of prey with his passion for education. “We’re hoping to offer educational demonstrations, forest experiences, and school programs,” he explains. “It’s a way to share my love of falconry and teach people about wildlife conservation.”
For Judy, the success of their business is measured in more than just financial terms. It’s about the lives they touch, the people they empower, and the community they serve. “I want to leave behind more than just a business,” she says. “I want to leave behind a sense of purpose, a legacy of love and compassion.”
As they look to the future, Judy and Nick are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Whether it’s expanding their training programs, growing Skywind Falconry, or simply enjoying the journey together, one thing is clear: the bond between mother and son is the heart of Rapid Response First Aid, and it’s what makes their story truly inspiring. u

Shelly Barber and Tim Mills steer East Coast Freight Distribution into the future
ast Coast Freight Distribution, led by Company Director Shelly Barber and General Manager Tim Mills, is a business rooted in family legacy and forward-thinking innovation. The company, a transport provider on the Sunshine Coast, delivers freight between Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and as far north as Gympie and the hinterland, and down to the Gold Coast. It handles general and palletised freight, forklift work, and even specialised agricultural and refrigerated transport. However, the true heart of the business lies in its culture—one fostered by Shelly’s transformative leadership and Tim’s operational expertise.
FROM GENERATIONAL ROOTS TO PERSONAL GROWTH
Shelly’s journey in the transport industry is deeply intertwined with her family’s business history. East Coast Freight Distribution began in the early 1990s when Shelly’s mother, Valerie, and her partner, Len, sought a lifestyle change and moved from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast.
BY
They acquired a small transport company, and Len and Shelly briefly co-owned the business before Shelly stepped away, frustrated by their differing approaches to business. It wasn’t until 2006, after years of personal growth and learning, Shelly returned to help her mother. In 2020, Shelly took over the company alongside Tim Mills and stepped into the role of Company Director.
Reflecting on her earlier days in the family business, Shelly recalls, “My biggest mistake was believing that what other people told me was right for me was right for me.” This realisation sparked a journey of self-discovery and empowerment that has since defined her leadership style. Shelly faced many challenges, including internal family conflicts, generational differences, and the inherent difficulties of a lack of understanding and tolerance around communication styles and differing roles. However, Shelly saw these obstacles as a gift in disguise and used these challenges to drive her quest to learn more and improve herself, her skill set, and her mindset.
SHARI HALL
PHOTOS BY LAUREN BIGGS PHOTOGRAPHY
LEADERSHIP AND TRANSFORMATION
When Shelly returned to the family business, she brought a newfound sense of purpose. Through years of studying successful people, working with business mentors, and engaging in personal development, she cultivated the mindset to lead. “I’ve been on a decades-long quest for knowledge—learning about my shortcomings, how to overcome them, how to be a better communicator, a better leader, and better in business,” she says.
One of Shelly’s key learnings came from her experience with neurolinguistic programming (NLP), which taught her the power of language and self-awareness. “The words we choose, often unconsciously, have power,” she notes. “NLP was a game changer for me, empowering me to such a degree that I’ve gone from strength to strength since then.” This mindfulness and conscious communication practice has shaped how Shelly interacts with her team and the broader industry.
CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES
In a predominantly male industry, Shelly’s leadership approach is refreshingly authentic. She embraces her femininity, often showing up to work in designer dresses and heels while confidently running her trucking business. “I have long since outgrown the idea that I must dress as everyone else does,” she declares. Shelly's authenticity goes beyond her clothes to how she interacts with those around her, particularly in connecting with her team and fostering a culture of respect and collaboration. “We all have different strengths, and I encourage my team to believe in themselves the way I believe in them,” she adds, highlighting how her groundedness has earned her the respect of those around her.
TIM MILLS: THE BACKBONE OF OPERATIONS
Tim Mills, who started as a driver at East Coast Freight, has played a crucial role in the company’s success. Over the years, Tim worked his way up through the business, eventually becoming General Manager in 2016 and co-owner with Shelly in 2020. His journey with East Coast Freight spans 18 years; during this time, he has built strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and the team. Shelly attributes much of the company’s operational success to Tim.
Shelly and Tim have created a business culture that prioritises performance and people. They deeply respect each other’s strengths and communicate openly and effectively. “There are lots of good truck drivers who don’t make good business owners. I think Shelly and I work well together with our different strengths and weaknesses,” Tim says.
STANDING ON TALL SHOULDERS
Despite the challenges of working in a family business, Shelly and Tim are quick to acknowledge the contributions of Val and Len, who played significant roles in establishing East Coast Freight. “We are standing on the tall shoulders of those who have come before us,” Shelly says, honouring the legacy of her family’s hard work.
Valerie was a driving force behind the success of this and their previous family business, Rocket Transport, which was a thriving Brisbane business in the 1970s to 1990s. Shelly describes her mother as an entrepreneurial spirit who “dressed beautifully” and won over clients with her business acumen and charm. “Mum was the driving force behind the success of both these companies,” Shelly states proudly. “I learned so much from her about what is needed to run a successful business.”
“MY BIGGEST MISTAKE WAS BELIEVING THAT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE TOLD ME WAS RIGHT FOR ME WAS RIGHT FOR ME.”
SHELLY BARBER
BALANCING FAMILY AND BUSINESS
One of the ongoing challenges Shelly faces is balancing the dynamics of family relationships with business responsibilities. As Shelly reflects, “When a child grows into an adult, there is often much conflict when the parent still treats them like a child.” This dynamic created much tension between Shelly and Len, but it also offered valuable lessons in communication and leadership. Today, Shelly is mindful of these experiences as she works to build a family legacy with her children. “I’m very much aware of everything I went through and use what I have learned to be a better parent and mentor and to provide guidance and support for future generations as part of my family legacy,” she says.
Shelly and Tim’s commitment to fostering a healthy work environment extends beyond their own families to their entire team and their families. The team culture at East Coast Freight emphasises work-life balance and family involvement. Their annual companywide Business Innovation and Brainstorming gathering, including all employees and their partners, reflects this value and acknowledges families' vital role in supporting their team and business.
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE
As Shelly and Tim continue to steer East Coast Freight into the future, sustainability and innovation are at the forefront of their business design. Both are passionate advocates for environmental sustainability and continually explore ways to improve their fleet and reduce their carbon footprint. “Transport is considered a major polluter, and I’m keen to see how we can improve things from the inside,” Shelly explains. Her knowledge of sustainability and cybersecurity, both passions she pursued through further education, informs her approach to the future of the business.
East Coast Freight Distribution remains a testament to the power of resilience, growth, and collaboration. Under Shelly and Tim’s leadership, the business has evolved into a well-respected and successful operation while maintaining family values, authenticity, and innovation. Shelly says, “We each have the power to change our world. It just takes one little step, then another.” With that mindset, East Coast Freight continues to drive forward. u
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR: creating healthier homes for families with
natural mould remediation
When Jill and Graeme Rogers reflect on their life together, they marvel at the diverse paths they’ve taken. Married for over 50 years, they’ve navigated many personal and professional terrains—from Tasmania to Queensland, from nursing and engineering to owning a financial education college, and now, leading a revolutionary business in natural mould remediation through XSpor Australia. Their journey to bringing this life-changing, eco-friendly solution to Australia was born from personal experience and a desire to create healthier homes and working spaces.
FROM DISASTER TO RECOVERY
Their story began in 2011 when Brisbane’s floodwaters overwhelmed the city. Graeme, then Body Corporate Chairman of their building, saw first-hand the devastating effects of mould in buildings. He noticed how toxic chemicals used in the clean-up were being pumped into the environment and wondered if there was a safer, more sustainable way to tackle the problem.
Jill recalls, “We were out of our building for six weeks because everything was inaccessible. Graeme couldn’t stand knowing these
BY SHARI HALL
dangerous chemicals were entering the river. This experience sparked his passion to find a better solution.”
That search led them to XSpor, a mould removal company that uses plant-based, natural products developed by American scientists. The XSpor formula, a blend of plant enzymes and extracts, is effective and safe for the environment and human health. The plant enzyme mimics how plants protect themselves from mould in the wild.
In 2018, Graeme and Jill became the master licensees for XSpor in Australia and New Zealand, ready to transform how people dealt with mould in their homes and working spaces.
MOULD: A SILENT THREAT
Mould is an invisible yet pervasive problem in many homes, especially in humid climates like Queensland. “It’s not just unsightly; it makes people sick. Nine out of ten homes we inspect have people suffering from mould-related illnesses, but they don’t realise what’s causing their symptoms,” Jill explains.
Mould can hide in walls, ceilings, and floors, silently triggering respiratory problems, chronic fatigue, and even neurological issues. Many medical professionals, Jill included—thanks to her nursing
background—have only recently begun to recognise the severity of mould exposure.
“Doctors are starting to acknowledge the dangers of mould exposure,” Jill says. “We’re now seeing more awareness, especially in Queensland where the climate creates perfect mould breeding conditions.”
PROTECTING FAMILIES, NATURALLY
At the heart of XSpor’s mission is a commitment to families. Jill and Graeme have helped countless families across Queensland remediate their homes, ensuring they live in safe, healthy environments. One story that stands out involves a couple who had just purchased a new home in Brisbane.
“The wife was extremely sensitive to mould and became violently ill within three days of moving in. To make matters worse, she was seven months pregnant,” Jill recalls. “We discovered a subfloor issue where moisture had accumulated, causing hidden mould. After a lengthy process, including using water diviners and fixing the drainage, we remediated the house, and she could finally live there safely.”
What makes their product unique is its longevity. Unlike chemicals, which lose their effectiveness quickly, XSpor’s enzymes continue to work for months, keeping homes mould-free. “We offer a warranty because we know that once we treat a home, it will stay free from mould for years—unless, of course, new mould is introduced,” she says.
MOULD PREVENTION TIPS:
• Annually inspect for roof leaks and repair quickly
• Clean gutters regularly
• Clean A/C every 12 months
BUILDING A HEALTHIER FUTURE
With XSpor Australia firmly established, Jill and Graeme continue to expand their services. They’ve recently introduced prepurchase mould inspections, a critical step for prospective homeowners. “More people are requesting mould inspections before buying a property, just like they would for pests or structural issues,” Jill notes. “It’s so important to ensure the home you’re moving into is safe, especially for families with young children.”
As they look to the future, Jill and Graeme are driven by their passion for improving indoor air quality. “Our goal is to educate as many people as possible about the dangers of mould and how to prevent it,” says Jill. “It’s not just about selling a product; it’s about helping people live healthier, happier lives.”
After decades of different careers and ventures, Jill and Graeme are proud to have found their true calling in XSpor Australia. “Helping people live healthier lives through natural mould remediation feels like the culmination of everything we’ve learned,” Jill reflects. “We’re not just remediating buildings; we’re giving people their health back. That’s what drives us.”
Their advice to anyone dealing with mould? Don’t wait. “Mould is sneaky,” Jill says with a smile. “But with the right solution, it doesn’t stand a chance.” u
• Clean carpets professionally every six months
• Ventilate your home correctly on warm, dry days
• Close your windows on hot, humid days, turn the fans on, or use the A/C on a dry cycle
• Use the exhaust fan when showering – leave it on for 10-15 mins after finishing
• Don’t leave wet towels in the bathroom
• Air your mattress and pillows frequently in full sun
• Declutter your home to minimise dust and mould
• Avoid using cardboard boxes for storage
• Use space bags to store clothes and linen
• Use good dehumidifiers in humid environments
• Use a good vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter
• Use a slightly damp microfibre cloth to dust the home, followed by a dry clean towel
• Consider using a UVC Air Disinfection Unit for air quality maintenance

36 YEARS OF TRUST AND RESILIENCE:
the Marston family legacy of IT success
BY SHARI HALL
When you meet Ross Marston, founder of Ramtech, a managed IT services provider, and Business Intelligence Security, a cybersecurity consultancy, it quickly becomes apparent that his business is much more than a technical operation. For Ross, it’s been a 36-year journey built on trust, relationships and most importantly, family.
Ross and his wife, Robyn, have grown businesses together on the Sunshine Coast with their daughters, Ashleigh, Jessica and Ruth, playing essential roles in their ongoing success. “Every team member, whether a relative or not, is part of our Ramtech family. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have such incredible staff and we are proud to continue growing together,” Ross explains.
At the heart of Ramtech is a set of values that go beyond IT services. These values shape how the business operates, builds relationships and serves clients.
FROM SURVEYING TO PROGRAMMING
Ramtech’s origins are humble. “I used to be a surveyor,” Ross recalls.
“I started writing programs to make life easier for surveyors and engineers and over time that work led to the need for more IT services. Eventually, it evolved into Ramtech.”
The name ‘Ramtech’ may seem simple—derived from Ross’s initials—but it has become synonymous with trust, quality, and innovation in IT services over the past three decades. Ross has watched the IT landscape change dramatically, from basic networking to the increasingly complex world of cybersecurity. With Business Intelligence Security, the cybersecurity arm of Ramtech, Ross and his team now help businesses improve efficiency and build resilience against attacks.
“We work to ensure that if a cyberattack happens, it has minimal impact on the business,” Ross explains. “It’s about resilience, not just security.”
THE HEART OF A FAMILY BUSINESS
While IT services are at the core of Ramtech’s offerings, the company’s family dynamic sets it apart. Each member of the Marston family— and the extended Ramtech team—plays a distinct role in keeping the business running smoothly.
“Having defined roles is key to avoiding overlap and stepping on each other’s toes,” Ross says. “Robyn has been managing the accounts for years, and Jessica is now stepping into that role. Ashleigh manages client relationships. Even though Ruth isn’t working directly with us right now, her support is always there.”
Working with family can be both rewarding and challenging, Ross admits. “Most of the time, it’s fantastic, but sometimes we need to set boundaries—like ‘no more business talk at dinner.’ But sometimes we need to work through things together first so we can enjoy our time as a family.”
For Ross, the business is about more than profits. “It’s about creating something that benefits everyone involved—family, staff, and clients. We hire based on character, not just
“JUST LIKE IN A MARRIAGE, IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN WHAT BENEFITS ONE PERSON. BOTH PARTIES NEED TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE RELATIONSHIP TO THRIVE. IF WE WERE ONLY THINKING ABOUT HOW WE COULD PROFIT, WE WOULDN’T HAVE LASTED 36 YEARS.”
ROSS MARSTON
technical skills. We want people who share our values and treat clients how they would want to be treated.”
THE POWER OF LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS
Ross knows trust is crucial in the IT industry, especially when businesses hand over their entire infrastructure to an external provider. “Taking on an IT services provider requires a lot of trust,” he says. “Clients trust us with their business’s backbone— their IT systems—and that’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”
Ross likens the relationship between Ramtech and its clients to a marriage. “It’s about more than what benefits one person. Both parties need to work together for the relationship to thrive. If we were only thinking about how we could profit, we wouldn’t have lasted 36 years.” Many of Ramtech’s clients have been with them for decades, and new clients frequently come through word-of-mouth referrals. “We’re not just selling IT services; we’re building long-term partnerships, almost like an extended family where we grow and succeed together,” Ross explains.
BUILDING RESILIENCE AGAINST CYBERATTACKS
In today’s increasingly digital world, cybersecurity is more important than ever. Ross has seen the damage that cyberattacks can inflict on businesses firsthand. “We’ve been called in to help when things have gone horribly wrong, and it’s incredibly stressful for everyone involved,” he shares.
However, for Ross and his team, the focus is not just on security but also on resilience. “You can’t make a business one hundred per cent secure—no one can. But we can ensure that if something happens, the business can bounce back quickly with minimal disruption.”
Ross believes that educating clients about potential risks and fostering open communication are just as important as the technology itself. “The best outcome for us is when we don’t hear from our clients— not because we don’t want to, but because everything is running smoothly. That’s when we know we’ve done our job.”
A LEGACY BEYOND THE BUSINESS
As Ross reflects on the future, he isn’t fixated on his daughters taking over the business. “It’s not about keeping the business going for the sake of it,” he says. “What’s most important to me is that my daughters build their families and strong, meaningful relationships. Whether they continue with Ramtech or follow their own paths is entirely up to them.”
For Ross, the legacy of Ramtech isn’t just about IT services—it’s about the values that have guided him throughout his career: trust, resilience, and family. “We’ve built something that lasts, not just in business but in relationships. That’s what I’m most proud of.”
As Ramtech continues to grow, the foundation Ross and Robyn have built with their family and team ensures that the company will remain strong for years.
“At the end of the day, business is about people. The computers and technology are just tools,” Ross says with a smile. “It’s the relationships that truly matter.”
With those principles in place, it’s clear that Ramtech and the Marston family are built to last. u

From family legacy to living the dream
BY SHARI HALL
When Adam Cursio talks about his work, it’s not just about bricks, mortar, and transactions. The heart of his Noosa-based business, Cursio Property Buyers Agents, lies in family—a concept that weaves through both his personal and professional life. From his childhood in a generational family business to raising his own young family on the Sunshine Coast, Adam has always understood that home is where life’s most meaningful moments unfold.
THE CURSIO LEGACY
Adam’s professional story begins with the legacy of the Cursio Group family business. Growing up in a tight-knit Italian family, Adam learned early on the power of collaboration and resilience. His parents, migrants from southern Italy, had left behind a life of poverty to build a new future in Australia. “They took a month-long journey on a boat to a land they had no idea about, just to survive,” Adam shares. “I feel obligated not to waste that legacy of hard work.”
As the youngest of two sons, Adam and his older brother, David, grew up working alongside their father, a financial planner who weathered the ups and downs of recessions while building a business from the ground up. “Dad gave us the opportunity to work together. He always said, ‘Many hands make light work.’ Even when we argued, as most families do, having three minds on a problem made things easier.” In business, Adam acknowledges that he couldn’t do what he does without collaborating with selling agents, mortgage brokers, solicitors, accountants, etc. They form his extended business family, that continues to grow.
BALANCING FAMILY AND BUSINESS
After spending years in the hustle and bustle of Melbourne, Adam knew he needed a change. “I didn’t want to fall into the same trap as my father, living in a big city, trying to find that seventh gear, being time-poor,” he explains. “I wanted to live life with my family, not just work for it.”
That desire led him to the Sunshine Coast, where he has crafted a lifestyle that many dream of—one where family comes first and work is an extension of life, not the other way around. “Living here has allowed me to be more present with my kids,” Adam says. “I don’t do anything on Tuesdays because that’s my day with my son. After school pick-up, we often head to the beach for a bit, or grab an ice cream on Hastings Street.”
For Adam, the Sunshine Coast offers more than just a picturesque backdrop; it’s a place where balance is possible. He describes the joy of walking his energetic dog along the beach—a simple task that forces him to slow down and appreciate the everyday moments. “Family distracts you in the best way possible,” he laughs. “You realise that the only reason you’re working so hard is to create a life where you can spend more time with them.”
HELPING OTHERS FIND THEIR DREAM HOME
Adam uses his expertise to help others find the perfect home to support their dream lifestyle. His joy lies in guiding families through the complex and often stressful process of finding a home. “It’s incredibly satisfying to help families find a home that allows them to live the life they want,” Adam reflects. “Whether it’s moving from interstate or getting out of a rental, there’s nothing more profound than being part of that process. People often need guidance. Sometimes, they don’t even realise they’re looking for the wrong type of property until you help them see the bigger picture.”
Adam’s ability to connect with his clients sets him apart. “I ask many questions about what kind of life they want here, not just what kind of property they’re looking for, and I listen. It’s about aligning their lifestyle with the home they’re buying, and sometimes that means helping them rethink their approach entirely.”
CREATING THE LIFE YOU WANT
For Adam, success isn’t about outdoing his father’s achievements. It’s about honouring his legacy by designing a life that balances work, family, and personal fulfilment. “I’ve learned that it’s not about doing more; it’s about knowing when to say no and valuing the time you have,” he shares.
His advice for those looking to move to the Sunshine Coast? “Come here for a week and see the real Noosa—the one you don’t see as a tourist. Take the time to experience the lifestyle and let it guide your decision.” And more importantly, he says, “Contact me early in your buying process. Eighty per cent of the work happens before you find your home, like making the plan, contacting selling agents, researching areas to buy, and finding off-market opportunities.”
Adam’s work isn’t just about real estate; it’s about helping families like his own find a place to thrive, create memories, and live life to the fullest. u
For Kira Steinhaus, the drive to create a sustainable future is more than just a professional ambition—it’s a deeply personal mission. As the mother of two boys, Kobi and Karda, Kira is fuelled by the desire to build a world where they can thrive. This commitment to sustainability and legacy guides her every decision at MyHaus Property Group, the family-owned business she now leads.
“My children are my ‘why’,” Kira says. “Everything I do is to create a better future for them. I want to show them that it’s possible to live comfortably while respecting the environment.”
Kira’s passion for sustainability is not just about building homes—it’s about creating spaces that reflect her family’s values and long history of craftsmanship and environmental stewardship.
A LEGACY ROOTED IN CRAFTSMANSHIP
Kira’s family history is rich with examples of innovation and craftsmanship. Her paternal grandfather, Emiel Steinhaus, was an engineer who worked across Brazil, Indonesia, and Holland. Though Kira never met him, his reputation as a man who could build anything with his mind lives on in the stories passed down through the generations.
“My grandfather was the glue that held everyone together,” Kira shares. “My dad, Sjoerd, inherited his skills, and I learned from both. That sense of building something from nothing has been passed down through the family.”
Sjoerd was a builder known for restoring heritage buildings and creating beautiful spaces with limited resources. One of Kira’s earliest memories is helping her father transform a government-provided house in Holland from a bare shell into a fully realised home.
“We weren’t wealthy, but my dad could make something beautiful out of very little,” Kira recalls. “He built our kitchen bit by bit as we could afford it. That’s where I learned the value of resourcefulness and quality, which I bring into every project I work on.”
This legacy of craftsmanship is central to Kira’s approach to her work today. She ensures that every project reflects her family’s values of quality, integrity, and respect for the environment.
THE PRESENT: MYHAUS PROPERTY GROUP
With MyHaus Property Group, she sees an opportunity to continue her family’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of sustainable building. Today, MyHaus is known for its commitment to creating homes that balance environmental sustainability with modern comfort.
“My brother, Kristiaan, and I both grew up with a deep respect for
CREATING A LEGACY FOR THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN

sustainability,” Kira explains. Kristiaan, who runs his own sustainable building company, Eco Haus Australia, is just as committed to reducing environmental impact as Kira is. “We both believe in the same thing— creating spaces that work harmoniously with the environment.”
At MyHaus, sustainability is at the core of every project. Whether retrofitting existing homes to improve energy efficiency or designing new developments with eco-friendly materials, Kira always seeks ways to minimise environmental impact without sacrificing quality.
“We can’t always make every home fully energy-efficient,” she admits, “but we can make improvements that make a big difference, like adding ventilation or skylights to reduce the need for artificial lighting.”
One of Kira’s dreams is to spearhead a mixed-use development that integrates residential, commercial, and green spaces. This project would reflect her vision for the future of property development—functional and beautiful spaces that reduce their footprint on the planet.
THE FUTURE: CONTINUING THE LEGACY
For Kira, the future of MyHaus Property Group is about more than just building homes—it’s about creating a legacy for her children and future generations. Kobi and Karda are already learning the values their mother holds dear, whether it’s through planting trees around the property or getting involved in small building projects.
“Kobi loves working with the land, and Karda is more creative and always striving to learn more,” Kira says proudly. “I want them to grow up knowing they can make a difference—that how we build and live matters.”
Kira’s commitment to sustainability is not just a professional choice— it’s a way of life she is passing on to her children. She hopes to inspire other developers to see that building sustainably is not only possible but essential in today’s world.
“We’re setting a trend,” Kira says. “I want to show that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the future. Whether it’s new developments or retrofitting existing homes, there’s always a way to build smarter and leave a smaller environmental footprint.”
As Kira looks ahead, she focuses on expanding MyHaus Property Group’s impact. She aims to continue pushing the boundaries of sustainable building while inspiring others in the industry to do the same.
“We’re not just building homes,” Kira says. “We’re building a legacy for our children, the community, and the future.” u

FAMILY FIRST, COMMUNITY ALWAYS THE BRIGHTAIRE ETHOS
Brightaire Property Services has a simple, yet powerful ethos: family first, community always. Since 2015, when Noddy and Brigitte DeCourcy took over the local carpet cleaning business, they’ve been weaving their family values and community involvement into the fabric of their work.
Always intending to build something that could be passed down to their children, that vision started taking shape with daughter Nikita helping Brigitte in the office and son Keegan out in the field with Noddy.
BY
“ON ANY GIVEN DAY, WE ARE TURNING MESSES INTO CLEAN PROPERTIES. WE’RE HARD-WORKING, GOOD PEOPLE WHO WORK WELL WITH EVERYBODY.”
NODDY DECOURCY
The family circle has expanded with Keegan’s wife, Sarah, joining the office team, bringing fresh ideas and energy. Even their three-yearold, Theo, is eager to pitch in, though his ‘help’ is currently limited to enthusiasm from the sidelines.
For the Brightaire clan, family extends beyond blood ties. Their commitment to the community is evident in their long-standing volunteer work. Tune into Sunshine FM, and you might catch Noddy’s familiar voice hosting “70s at 7 with Noddy” or his Sunday afternoon
show. Meanwhile, Brigitte’s decades-long involvement with Football Queensland and the Wanderers speaks volumes about her passion for local sporting families. Keegan has shown he’s a chip off the ol’ block and has his parents’ giving nature. He’s a familiar face to many locals, particularly the older residents who appreciate his offer of a cuppa during service calls. Brightaire also donates funds and time to deliver Christmas gifts to underprivileged children in rural areas each year.
When Brightaire is on the job, clients aren’t just getting clean carpets but connection, too.
As Brigitte and Noddy look to the future, it’s clear that this family business is about more than just cleaning. It’s about building something meaningful for the next generation while providing a dependable and fairly priced service to the community they love calling home. u www.brightairepropertyservices.com.au

SUNSHINE COAST’S YOUNGEST AUTHOR INSPIRES YOU TO START TODAY
BY ROXANNE McCARTY-O'KANE
“Ihear many people say they want to write a book, but why do they think they must wait? Why can’t they do it now?”
Out of the mouths of babes! This was what my 11-year-old son Lincoln Rawlins said to a journalist from 7News during an interview for the release of his second book, Super Sprout. Why do aspiring authors feel like they have to wait? Lincoln is out there proving that, more often than not, your mindset is the primary barrier preventing you from writing your story.
Family has always been a core value of mine, but I never imagined one of my children would find their voice through authorship the same way I have.
I want to share a Q&A with the Sunshine Coast’s youngest author so you, too, can be inspired to share your story.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START CREATING FICTION STORIES?
I loved making up stories at kindy, and one of my favourites was the story of the orange man and the grey man. After I wrote Sprout’s Idea when I was eight, my sister found the little paper book I made, and I realised that the grey man—who liked to steal the other characters’ colours—was the first time I came up with the idea of a character like Shade Man.
DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD BE A PUBLISHED AUTHOR?
make the festival environmentally friendly. That is when Sprout came to life. I shared my story on stage in front of more than 100 people, which was not easy! But they loved it, and people came up to me for the rest of the day to say that I should make my story into a book, so I decided to do it.
1 2 3 4
Not really. My guitar teacher hosted the Secret Oasis Festival in 2022 and wanted three generations of storytellers to share a message of hope. The older two generations were sharing life experiences, but I was only eight and didn’t have much of that. So I decided to make up a story based on trees because they were planting 1000 trees to
HOW MANY COPIES OF YOUR BOOKS HAVE YOU SOLD SO FAR?
I’ve sold 600 copies around Australia, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, and even Germany. It’s cool that children in so many countries know Sprout.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE SUPER SPROUT WILL DO FOR THOSE WHO READ IT?
I hope anyone who reads it will realise that we all have special and unique things about us. It isn’t good to compare your special talents to others, so the best thing to do is remember that being yourself is your greatest superpower. I wrote this book for anyone who thought they weren’t good at anything or didn’t think they were good enough because everyone is
8 5 6
ARE THERE MORE SPROUT BOOKS TO COME?
Hopefully, yes, I am just waiting for the next idea.
WHAT DO YOU SAY TO OTHERS WHO WANT TO WRITE AND PUBLISH A BOOK?
I have proved that you don’t have to wait until you are older to do what you want to do. Have fun with it and keep pushing because getting the right words might take a while. It took me eight drafts for my first book and six for my second one, so I’m improving. Practice always makes you better at things.
7
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE ENDORSED BY SOME BIG NAMES IN THE LITERARY WORLD?
Honestly, I didn’t think that we could pull it off. I love Andy Griffiths, who endorsed Sprout’s Idea, and Jackie French is really cool. We are supporting Jackie’s Wombat Foundation with a donation from every copy of Super Sprout My illustrator Cara even put some wombats in the book.
WHAT SORT OF ADVENTURES HAVE YOU HAD AS AN AUTHOR SO FAR?
I’ve done some pretty cool things, like being the youngest-ever author to feature at the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literary Festival earlier this year. I also read Sprout’s Idea as a bedtime story to a plane full of passengers flying from Maroochydore to Darwin as a special maiden flight event for Bonza Airlines. I have visited many schools, kindys, and daycares to read my books and share messages of kindness, teamwork, positivity, and belief in oneself. I love seeing people enjoying my books. u

Family has an uncanny ability to push our buttons, don’t they? Even after all the inner work, personal growth, and self-awareness we’ve cultivated, they can still provoke us like no one else. You might walk into a family gathering feeling centred, only to hear something like, “Aren’t you looking after yourself?” as your mum looks at your face, or your brother dismissing your opinion with, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Sound familiar?
To be clear, family can also be our biggest support system, but that’s not what this article is about. This is for those moments when it feels like they’re getting under your skin. You find yourself in the same emotional tug-ofwar that you experienced as a child, but this time, instead of throwing a tantrum, you must respond as an adult. Maybe you even bite your tongue… or at least try to.
Take my brother, for instance. In 2016, we talked about my not going for a colonoscopy. I had shared with him how amazing I felt and that my intuition told me I didn’t need the procedure. After two failed attempts to have an appointment confirmed and receiving excellent blood and stool results, I felt at peace with my decision. But my brother, in his firm conviction, questioned me, “But how do you know you’re well?”
My repeated, “Because I feel well,” wasn’t enough for him. He needed medical confirmation. A year prior, his doubts might have swayed me. I probably would have booked that appointment again, overriding my inner knowing. But I’ve come to trust myself so deeply that I no longer feel the need to fit into someone else’s version of reality— even when that someone is family.
LEARNING TO ACCEPT AND LETTING GO OF CONTROL
Looking back, I realise how far I’ve come in communicating with my family. I’ve learned to accept them for who they are and their choices. I’ve grown to a place where I can allow them to be themselves, just as I want them to allow me to be myself. It may not sound like the most significant revelation, but it’s made a world of difference in my relationships. Letting go of the need to change them or gain their approval has been freeing.
So, how do we take the discomfort, irritation, and frustration our family triggers and transform it into something meaningful? How do we shift from being reactive to embracing these moments as opportunities for growth?
TRANSFORMING TRIGGERS INTO PERSONAL GROWTH
It’s simpler than you might think. It starts with awareness. When those emotions arise, pause and ask yourself, “What part of me is creating this experience?”
This isn’t about overanalysing or trying to rationalise the situation. It’s about noticing. Let the insights come. You might recall a childhood memory of being yelled at or the time you were left alone for what felt like the scariest five minutes of your life. Perhaps you remember feeling less cared for than a sibling, always believing their needs were more important than yours.
Whatever the insight, this is the part of you that needs attention, love, and healing. When you nurture that inner wound, the dynamic with your family softens. The relationships we crave—whether with a parent, sibling, or other family member—begin to flourish.
Family can be our greatest teachers
BY BHAVNA MEGH
Why? Because we’re no longer holding onto pain or hurt. There’s more room for love when we release the old stories we’ve been carrying. Family is often our greatest teacher. Yes, they provoke us, but they also offer us invaluable lessons—if we’re willing to lean into them. So, the next time your family pushes your buttons, consider it a golden opportunity for growth.
And if you ever need support in turning these insights into peace, wisdom, love, and grace, reach out to me. Together, we can transform the triggers into your greatest personal breakthroughs.
With hugs, love, and magic!

BY SHARI HALL // PHOTO BY EMPIRE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
Imagine a life where debilitating migraines no longer dictate your schedule, where you can fully engage with your family, excel in your career, and embrace each day with vibrant energy. For many high-achieving women, this might sound like an impossible dream. But energy medicine consultant Ann Noler Harris has seen it’s not only possible— it’s within your reach.
THE UNSEEN TOLL OF MIGRAINES
“I’ve seen how when a parent is living with pain, they can be short-tempered and tend to be unable to do things as a family,” Ann explains, painting a vivid picture of the far-reaching effects of chronic migraines.
“When you have a migraine or are in pain, it’s easier to lie down and rest than to go to your child’s soccer match or a family barbecue. This isolation doesn’t just affect the person in pain. The family unit can start to break down, and the foundations are not as strong anymore. The children also live in that unhappy environment, which has a snowball effect,” Ann says.
Consider the missed moments: a child’s swimming race, family dinners, or essential work presentations. Each cancellation chips away at relationships and self-esteem. “The child can also start to lose trust in the parent to protect themselves from disappointment or being let down again.”
You’ve likely tried everything—eliminating trigger foods, experimenting with medications, even considering more drastic measures. Yet the migraines persist, leaving you feeling hopeless and defeated. But there is another way.
A GLIMMER OF HOPE: ENERGY MEDICINE’S HOLISTIC APPROACH
Ann offers hope with her unique individualised approach to energy medicine.
“Every person I work with is completely different,” she explains. “There’s no manual that I go through. I connect with their energy
and start to work on whatever the root cause of the problem is.”
Ann doesn’t just treat symptoms; she delves deep into the underlying causes of migraines, which could range from genetic predispositions to unresolved emotional issues or past traumas.
She also notes that migraines can sometimes serve as a protective mechanism. “Some people can have migraines because there’s something in their life that they don’t want to be doing or something they don’t want to face.”
YOUR JOURNEY TO HEALING
Ann’s six-month VIP program is more than just a treatment—it’s a transformative journey. Through 15 one-on-one sessions and continuous support, you’ll work together to rebalance your energy and recalibrate your body’s natural healing mechanisms.
“It’s a gentle process whilst you relax in your own home and speak to Ann by phone,” Ann assures. “It gives clarity and focus back. Hope, peace, calmness, and happiness return, as does the spark in your eyes!”
But Ann is clear—this isn’t a quick fix. “There’s no magic wand to wave, and then all of a sudden, everyone’s healed,” she states. “This journey requires commitment, courage, and consistency.”
The results, however, can be life-changing. “By the time people have finished working with me, they can feel ten years younger,” Ann proudly shares. “Their children have got their parents back, and they’re on purpose with what they’re doing in their business.”
INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE
“Women often find it very hard to justify spending money on themselves,” she acknowledges. “It’s okay to go and spend it on everyone else because everyone else is more important, but to spend it on me? I better not. Remember that investing in yourself eliminates that feeling of being unworthy and helps you to live your best life, feeling fulfilled and happy, and this has an ongoing effect on you and your family,”
How much have you already invested in treatments that offer only temporary relief? How many precious moments have you lost to pain? Ann offers flexible payment options, including monthly plans and financing, to make this transformative experience accessible.
Imagine waking up each morning confident in your ability to face the day. Picture yourself planning family outings without the nagging worry of a sudden migraine attack. Envision striding into work, ready to take on new challenges without the fog of pain clouding your judgment.
This isn’t just a dream—it’s a reality that many of Ann’s clients already live. They’ve broken free from the cycle of pain and reclaimed their lives. Now, it’s your turn.
Don’t let another precious moment slip away. Contact Ann Noler Harris today and take the first step on your journey to freedom from migraines or pain. Your future self—and your grateful family—will thank you for it. u

Family businesses have an advantage because the stakes are more personal. You’re not just building a business; you’re creating something that benefits both the family and the future. Success comes from keeping communication open, adapting when things change, and supporting each other as business partners and family members. It’s about staying committed to shared goals, understanding each other’s strengths, and having the flexibility to grow together. That combination of trust and purpose helps create a solid foundation for sustainable, long-term success.

Cooee Water
Larnie and Steve Tierney
When starting Cooee Water, we had to have a strong belief in what we were doing, belief in each other, and belief in ourselves. This removes the questions of doubt in the early days, so you can keep going forward and stay motivated when building from ground zero. Being true to yourself and respecting each other allows you to get on with your individual jobs. It has been vital for Cooee Water to use our different strengths, skills, and personalities to identify specific roles. Most importantly, communication and love are important because when you get annoyed, remember you can’t sack each other!

After 40 years on the Sunshine Coast, we know our best assets are our long-term clients and employees. Our success and sustainability come down to ensuring great relationships with both.
We believe it’s imperative to constantly work on these relationships to ensure we understand exactly what our clients and team want and need. This makes them feel appreciated and respected and creates a loyalty we are proud of. Some of our clients have been with us from the beginning, and some team members have celebrated more than 25 years with us!

Ramtech Ross and Robyn Marston
Long-term success in family-owned businesses hinges on clearly defined roles that align with each person’s strengths, ensuring that not everyone is responsible for everything. Trust your spouse’s decisions within their role, as backseat driving creates unnecessary tension. Seek help when needed—no one has all the answers. Keep work issues at work to maintain balance, and always remember that the business is not the family. While there may be overlap, family must come first, as it's far harder to rebuild a family than a business. A strong family foundation supports long-term business success.

At Lauxen Cleaning Solutions, our secret to success really boils down to respect and growing together as a family. We make it a point to communicate openly, value everyone’s role, and support each other’s growth.
This isn’t just business; it’s about building a family legacy that values hard work and unity. Keeping these principles at the heart of what we do has allowed us to thrive and stay together through ups and downs.

Long-term success and sustainability in family-owned businesses rely on recognising and respecting each family member's core skills and contributions. Open communication is crucial, addressing conflicts immediately. A clear business plan, including one-year, five-year, and long-term goals, helps guide growth. Knowing your market, demographic, and financial needs, including profit margins and necessary funds, is essential. Equally important is having a clear end goal, whether selling or passing on a legacy. Finally, swift action is vital if issues arise—preventing small deficits from growing can significantly affect long-term sustainability.

A LIFE-CHANGING DONATION FOR STROKE CARE
Family businesses are the heartbeat of our vibrant community, and the Armesto family is a shining example of this spirit.
Since its founding in 1972 by Manuel and Rosemary Armesto, Armesto’s Transport on the Sunshine Coast has been transporting freight across the East Coast. The Armesto family is passionate about the community in which they work and live. They recently made a significant donation to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital charity, Wishlist, during the Wishlist Spring Carnival. This cause is deeply personal for the company’s Account Manager, Teresa Armesto-De Winter, whose teenage son, Tony, experienced a life-changing medical emergency at just 19.
On what seemed like a typical Wednesday, Teresa was chatting with Tony, when he mentioned a severe headache. The following morning, her world turned upside down with a heart-dropping call – Tony was in an ambulance on his way to Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH).
“We rushed to the hospital, and when we
arrived, they were doing a CT scan, and the doctor said something neurological was going on, and we saw this large mass on the scan,” Teresa remembers. “They weren’t sure if it was an aneurysm or a tumour, but they knew it was serious and that he needed to be flown by helicopter to Brisbane as soon as possible.”
Tony was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where doctors clipped an aneurysm but warned Teresa that her son had only a two per cent chance of survival.
Tony spent 16 days in the Intensive Care Unit, supported by machines and the love of his family. A turning point came when his stepdad, Danny, encouraged him, and Tony responded by opening his eyes.
“We burst into tears – he’s there, he knows who we are,” Teresa remembers.
After six months in the hospital, Tony was discharged in December 2019. Teresa took two years off from work to care for her son – life for the family changed completely.
The mother-son duo’s positive and fighting spirit helped them face unimaginable
challenges, and five years on, their recovery continues.
Despite losing speech and cognitive abilities, Tony’s determination led him to stand for the first time just six weeks after ICU. Now walking unaided, he has even conquered Mount Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains.
As advocates for early intervention in stroke care, Teresa and Tony emphasise the importance of rapid treatment.
“Until you’ve been through this journey, it’s hard to grasp the significance of quick, effective care.”
Wishlist is fundraising $600,000 towards a Biplane machine for SCUH, which will be vital in the early treatment of strokes and brain aneurysms, saving the burden of disability for countless people in the future. It will also bring a vital clot-retrieval service to the Coast – a first for our region – saving people like Tony the time-critical journey to a Brisbane hospital.
“The difference the Biplane Unit would make will be massive,” Teresa adds.
To support Wishlist and help fund a Biplane unit for stroke patients, make a tax-deductible donation today at wishlist.org.au or call 5202 1777. Your contribution can make a vital difference in the fight against stroke. u www.wishlist.org.au/event/bi-plane
REIMAGINING OUR VILLAGE: multiculturalism as biodiversity
BY TAMI HARRIOTT
Living in a beautiful environment can be somewhat paradoxical. As I gaze out at the stunning coastline stretching to the hinterland, I am constantly reminded of how fortunate we are to call the Sunshine Coast home. Yet, these fortunes may be misleading. Beneath the
surface of this picturesque landscape, hardship looms. A stroll down the main streets reveals a troubling sight: For Lease signs, vacant shops, and struggling businesses. These empty storefronts serve as a stark reminder that even in the most beautiful places, there can be challenging circumstances.
Our village, once the vibrant heart of our community, is dying. While we are happy to see retirees moving in with their savings, this cannot be the only demographic we attract. This trend highlights a deeper issue: our failure to foster a diverse and inclusive community. Although we encourage multiculturalism, too often, those who come here from different backgrounds are treated as outsiders; hence, their time in our village is frequently cut short.
At the heart of every thriving village is a diverse community that makes it vibrant, resilient, and dynamic. This is what we need to revive our village. Understanding the value of multiculturalism can help our community move beyond being just a tourist destination to becoming a rich tapestry of talents, perspectives, and opportunities waiting to be realised.
GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Our village is not just a collection of homes and businesses; it is a living, breathing organism made up of its inhabitants. We are a global community, and our strength lies in our diversity. People from different corners of the world bring unique cultures, languages, and traditions, enriching our social fabric. This diversity is not something to be tolerated; it is something to be celebrated.
Multiculturalism offers a wealth of benefits to our community. It brings fresh ideas and innovation, fosters greater understanding and empathy, and creates a more dynamic and adaptable workforce. It moves us beyond the narrow confines of homogeneity, allowing us to embrace a broader range of perspectives and experiences. In doing so, we create a community that is more interesting, engaging, robust, and resilient. Together, we become globally competitive because we become more multilingual and culturally astute as our worldviews evolve.
EMBRACING DIVERSITY
Our engagement as a community should be as dynamic as the people who compose it. The discourse in our village should be shaped by the diverse voices of those who live here, reflecting their unique contributions and experiences. This does not mean assimilation or diluting distinct cultural identities. Instead, it means creating a space where all cultures can coexist and thrive, each contributing to the vibrancy and dynamism of our village. We should be open to ideas, even those we didn’t initiate or that may challenge our norms.
TAMI HARRIOTT, General Manager, CIDSEL
Imagine a village where the local market offers what was exotic as familiar, community engagement embraces many traditions, conversations flow in multiple languages, and the stories we share reflect a world of experiences. This is the multilingual, multicultural, and colourful community I envision
for our village—a biodiversity of culture within and throughout.
CELEBRATING WHO WE ARE
We are part of a global village. We are not just immigrants but villagers with hopes and dreams for our families and neighbours. We celebrate each other and find comfort in knowing that we matter to each other. We strive to create an environment where all are welcome, we celebrate our differences, and we come together to build a stronger, more cohesive community. This is not just a vision but a call to action. We must recognise that the potential death of our village does not lie in empty storefronts or economic downturns alone; it lies in our failure to embrace the richness of diversity already at our doorstep.
As a global community living in a local village, let us celebrate who we are. Let us embrace our multicultural identity and recognise the value it brings. This is not just about tolerance but about genuine appreciation and celebration of the many cultures that make up our community. It is about coming together—not just getting together—to create a village where everyone feels they belong, where all are welcome, and where every person, regardless of their background, can contribute to the community’s collective wellbeing.
BUILDING A DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY
This is what we represent: a village where diversity is the pulse that keeps it alive and thriving, a community that does not merely survive but flourishes because of its differences. Join us in celebrating our multicultural community. Join us in making our village not just a place to live but a place to belong—a place where all are welcome, and everyone has a chance to contribute to a vibrant, dynamic, and inclusive future.
Together, let’s revive our village, not by peddling dystopian futures but by embracing it in all its complexity and beauty. Let’s build a community that reflects who we are and who we can be—a global village where local actions have a global impact.
This is our call to action. This is our vision.

MAKE A GLOBAL IMPACT WITH DESTINY RESCUE
BY KIANI MILSOM
While many businesses take stock of their achievements and celebrate the wins when the year draws to a close, we’re shining a light on the incredible work being done by Destiny Rescue, a local Sunshine Coast organisation.
Every day, Destiny Rescue saves ten children from the horrors of trafficking—but with your help, that number could be 11, or even more. This Sunshine Coast not-for-profit has already rescued over 17,000 individuals by November 2024, but the fight is far from over.
Operating across three global regions, Destiny Rescue’s mission is to bring freedom to children trapped in exploitation and abuse. With the business community’s support, we can increase those numbers and give even more children a chance at a life of freedom. Your contribution could be the difference that saves another child today.
BUSINESSES LEADING THE WAY
Throughout 2024, businesses across Australia supported Destiny Rescue through fundraisers or becoming Rescue Partners, providing ongoing support to ensure Destiny Rescue’s critical missions continue uninterrupted. Others have funded entire rescue missions, contributing directly to the rescue of children from exploitation. Seeing how companies can combine team spirit with social responsibility is inspiring. This commitment enables the rescue and rehabilitation of children, ensuring they receive the care they need to heal and rebuild.
Other businesses have hosted fundraising events, engaging both employees and customers. Whether it’s a sponsored walk or an office challenge, these events do more than raise funds—they foster team spirit and purpose.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO RESCUE
At Destiny Rescue, the journey doesn’t end with rescue. The organisation ensures each child is not only saved but also supported. Rescued children are provided with a safe environment, counselling, medical care, and the opportunity to heal. Destiny Rescue also equips them with tools for long-term success, whether through education or vocational training.
Without Destiny Rescue, many children cannot be rescued. Local law enforcement agencies often lack
the resources to tackle this issue alone. But with the support of Destiny Rescue, these gaps are filled. Teams work with local authorities to locate perpetrators and victims, gather evidence, and work alongside law enforcement to conduct operations. What many don’t realise is that Destiny Rescue also steps in to fund the essentials—like fuel for police vehicles, and accommodation and meals for rescued children. The heartbreaking truth is that the only thing holding up more rescues is funding. And this is where businesses like yours can help change everything.
HOW YOUR BUSINESS CAN HELP
There are many ways your business can support Destiny Rescue. One powerful approach is combining team building with purpose. Hosting a fundraiser can bring your team together while making a real difference in the lives of children. Whether it’s organising a trivia night or creating a team challenge, your business can raise awareness and funds for this crucial cause.
Another impactful option is becoming a Rescue Partner. Regular donations from your business will fuel ongoing rescue efforts, helping children escape exploitation and reclaim their lives. It’s a meaningful way to show your company’s commitment to social responsibility.
WHAT’S YOUR NEXT MOVE?
There are many ways your business can take action. Right now, Destiny Rescue is rescuing ten children every day. Imagine the difference your business could make by helping to rescue the eleventh. Together, we can create a world where no child is left behind in the fight against trafficking. u

In the arms of strangers: FINDING FAMILY IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
BY SHARI HALL
Five days before the Matters Magazine ‘New Beginnings’ issue launched, a devastating event occurred that would change my life.
I rose early with feelings of anxiety and excitement, often difficult to distinguish since both emotions result from the release of adrenalin. I dressed stylishly and professionally, ready to attend a Business Networking International (BNI) breakfast meeting.
Driving to the Mooloolaba Wharf, the smell of dozens of freshly printed magazines filled my car. Despite a fine mist raining from the sky, I opened my windows and inhaled the moist air. I had been invited to the BNI Team Momentum meeting, and they were about to receive exclusive preview copies of Matters with my debut as the new editor-inchief. My heartbeat was palpable, and my mind raced with thoughts of whether it was good enough, whether they would like it, and whether they would accept it.
I walked toward the venue's entrance with my bag in tow, hoping the magazines wouldn’t get wet. Just as I stepped from the concrete walkway to the wooden boardwalk, I felt my foot slip and without a moment’s notice, I was lying face down on the boardwalk in excruciating and unbearable pain. I couldn’t move.
I knew none of their names, what they did for a living, or if any of them even knew who I was. But none of that seemed to matter. Here’s what did matter; one person knelt by my side and held my arm, another supported my back, a third gently rolled me to the side and aided me to a sitting position, a fourth was on the phone to the Queensland Ambulance Service, a fifth stood behind me to provide solid support to lean on, and a sixth had already run to the nearby restaurant to get a bag of ice. A seventh held my hand and spoke calming words into my ears, and an eighth brought something to rest my heavy dead arm upon. Oblivious to any sense of time, overwhelmed by the pain and nausea, it appeared everything was moving in slow motion.
Before I knew it, I’d been monitored and anaesthetised, had my shoulder put back in place and was CT scanned. My husband was sitting by my side in the recovery bay, and two hours later, I was home sitting on my sofa, completely inebriated from the intense pain medications I’d received. Needless to say, it was not the morning I anticipated when I walked out the door.
It seemed like an eternity I was lying in the puddles, my beautiful black jumpsuit soaking through, my hair drenched, my mascara running down my cheeks, and my arm popped out of its socket, a definite dislocation. For a moment, I thought I would faint. Then a gentle masculine voice came from above and asked with concern, “Are you alright? Can I help you?”
Moments later, four or five additional strangers were coming to my assistance.
The next thing I knew, I was in the back of the ambulance with two poised and professional paramedics. One swiftly placed an intravenous line in my arm, administered an anti-emetic to relieve my queasiness, and gave me a ‘green whistle’ to inhale to alleviate my pain. The other drove safely and speedily to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Emergency Department. Less than an hour later, I’d been triaged and assessed by the nurses, had an x-ray performed by the radiology technician, had seen the orthopaedic surgeon and anaesthetist, and was prepared for the reduction of my fractured, dislocated shoulder.
But why am I sharing this traumatic experience with you as an editorial in the ‘Family’ issue of Matters Magazine? Because… family can be defined in so many ways. Other than my husband, who was late to the scene because he was already at work, all of the beautiful humans who assisted me that morning were strangers to me. None would be defined as a family member or next of kin. Yet, on that morning, they were my family. They held, comforted, cared for, and reassured me. They acted swiftly and altruistically – the true essence of Agape. From the members of BNI Team Momentum, the restauranteurs, paramedics, wardsmen, and technicians, to the doctors and nurses, the pharmacist and nursing assistants… together, they formed my family and ensured there was not one moment I endured this experience alone. With all that is happening in our world today, locally and globally, it’s often hard to see the beauty and compassion that exists right before our eyes. We forget that we are not the only ones managing through the dayto-day struggles and suffering of just walking through this human experience. But this day, this event, this moment reassured me there is a common bond that ties us together… love.
I am happy to say I am healing. The magazine was presented to the group by its members that morning in my absence, and my life hasn’t been shattered, even though my bones were. Thank you, my family. u

Balance business and family: learn to switch off
Owning a business can feel all-consuming. You’re always ‘on’—solving problems, making decisions, and driving growth. Yet, in pursuing success, it’s easy to overlook one of your most critical investments—time for yourself and your family. Learning to switch off and delegate tasks to specialists isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.
THE POWER OF SWITCHING OFF
Switching off may seem like a luxury, but it’s a strategic move that benefits you and your business. Studies consistently show that taking breaks improves mental clarity, creativity and decision-making. You’re more effective when well-rested and less likely to make costly mistakes when not running on empty.
More importantly, stepping away from work allows you to reconnect with yourself and the things that bring you joy. Whether spending time with family, indulging in a hobby, or enjoying a quiet moment, these activities restore your energy and refresh your mindset. When you return to work, you’re not just back—you’re better.
FAMILY TIME: THE REAL WEALTH
Many entrepreneurs started their business to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones. However, when work demands take over, family time is often the first thing sacrificed. Yet, it’s these moments with your loved ones that matter most in the long run.
Spending quality time with family helps you stay grounded and motivated. It’s not just a break from the hustle; it’s a reminder of why you’re hustling in the first place. Prioritising family time strengthens relationships, reduces stress and renews your sense of purpose. This translates into more passion and focus when you return to your business.
OUTSOURCE WHAT YOU DON’T LOVE
One of the smartest moves a business owner can make is to focus on what they do best and let go of the rest. Tasks like bookkeeping and HR might be crucial, but they aren’t necessarily where your passion lies. That’s where Imperium Corporate Services comes in.
By outsourcing administrative tasks to experts like Imperium, you free up time and reduce stress. Letting professionals handle these duties allows you to focus on growth strategies, innovation and the aspects of your business you genuinely enjoy. You’ll also have more time to invest in yourself and your personal life, creating a balanced and fulfilling routine.
THE BENEFITS OF A BALANCED LIFE
Balancing your business with time for selfcare and family isn’t just good for you—it’s good for your business, too. Here’s why:
• You work more efficiently, make better decisions and increase productivity when well-rested.
• Spending time with loved ones strengthens relationships and boosts emotional health.
• Time away from work often leads to creative breakthroughs and fresh ideas that you might miss in the daily grind.
• Avoiding burnout ensures you have the energy to grow your business sustainably.
WORK SMART, LIVE WELL
Running a business doesn’t mean sacrificing yourself or your family. By outsourcing tasks, you gain the freedom to focus on what matters most—professionally and personally. Wise entrepreneurs know that true success lies not just in growing a business but in improving the quality of their lives.
Let Imperium Corporate Services handle the details so you can switch off, reconnect and enjoy the life you’ve worked hard to build. After all, the goal isn’t just to create a successful business—it’s to live a fulfilling life.
A family’s business journey from the heart of Australia
One of my earliest memories is watching a dust storm roll over the MacDonell Ranges in Alice Springs. Like a silent wave, the massive plume of dust blocked out the sky. If it were a wave, we knew we would surely drown. This was the town of Alice Springs, as known in the famous movie A Town Like Alice. Living in Alice Springs, with its harsh environment, required resilience and determination, qualities that shaped the people there, including the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
My family’s roots in Central Australia stretch back to the late 1800s. My greatgrandmother, Annie Meyers (nee Williams), arrived in Alice Springs in 1896 from Moonta, South Australia. She married Charlie Meyers in 1897, and they had three children, including my grandmother, Dorothy. In 1926, Annie’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to open a guesthouse in Alice Springs.
My father, Murray, was born in Adelaide in 1927. He came to Alice as a baby when the railway to Oodnadatta opened in 1929. Before that, Alice Springs relied on horses, carts and camels for transport. My grandfather, David, set up a business selling goods on commission, then expanded into selling radios and opening a milk bar and ice works by 1938.
This legacy of perseverance and entrepreneurship shaped my journey in our family business. My siblings and I joined the business in 1985, continuing the path our ancestors laid. There were no formal employment or business agreements, just the understanding that hard work and dedication were expected.
So how does a business survive with family?
I don’t think it is much different to running a successful business with employees. Running a family business, however, brings its own set of challenges, especially the emotional ties that can complicate decision-making. However, these challenges can become strengths with good communication and mutual respect. In my experience, communication, work ethic, leadership and aligned skills are the pillars that kept our business thriving.
Communication was vital for us. We held regular ‘board’ meetings where each family member had clear responsibilities based on their skills. This structure prevented conflicts and ensured that everyone could contribute meaningfully. Accountability was also crucial. If someone made a mistake, it was addressed openly and constructively.
Work ethic was another cornerstone. In our family, everyone pulled their weight. We all earned the same wages, which fostered a sense of fairness and unity. This respect extended to our employees, who became like family. Their loyalty and dedication were instrumental to our success.
Leadership was equally important. At our peak, we operated a large retail store in Alice Springs, alongside other ventures, employing around 40 people. Our success was built on mutual respect and transparent leadership. We were always mindful of our roles, especially when interacting with staff who didn’t report directly to us.
Ultimately, the key to running a successful family business is more than just the family connection. It’s about clear communication, aligning goals and respecting each other’s strengths. Addressing issues early and fairly kept our business running smoothly and fostered a positive work environment.
Whether it’s a family business or not, success depends on finding the right people with the same vision and commitment. The lessons I’ve learned from my family’s journey are rooted in trust, fairness and the ability to balance emotion with sound business practices.

To grow, stop thinking like a family business
Let’s be real—family businesses are the backbone of communities, from the Sunshine Coast to across the globe. But here’s the kicker: most family businesses never reach their full potential because they’re stuck in “family mode.” They see themselves as a family business first, instead of a business that happens to be run by a family. That mindset could be holding them back.
I’ve worked with countless family businesses, and the ones that thrive have one thing in common: they stop running their business like a family reunion and start treating it like a growth engine. How do they do it? By embracing the Rockefeller Habits—a proven system that transforms, “We’ve always done it this way,” into, “We’ve hit seven figures and beyond.”
THE GROWTH TRAP: FAMILY-FIRST MINDSET
Loyalty, emotions and informal roles can derail a family business faster than you think. While family dynamics are important, they can too easily dictate business decisions, keeping the company small. Unclear roles, decisions driven by feelings and a lack of strategic vision for the future are the issues that can hold family businesses back.
The key to driving real growth is creating structure, setting clear goals and breaking free from the emotional decision-making trap. The Rockefeller Habits are all about making smart, strategic moves, professionalising the business, and holding the owner accountable for real, measurable results.
CLARITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY ARE KEY
with a sibling or cousin. That’s where external accountability comes in. Whether through a business coach, peer advisory groups or trusted advisors, it keeps the business laserfocused on outcomes—not just relationships.
SYSTEMS THAT SCALE
Here’s the truth: you can’t grow without systems. Many family businesses struggle because they’re improvising every step of the way. The Rockefeller Habits focus on implementing systems that streamline every part of the business—from profit margins and marketing to sales and leadership.
At The Accountable Boardroom, we help family businesses develop the systems they need to stop merely surviving and start thriving. With the right structure in place, your business can scale efficiently and effectively.
FROM FAMILY BUSINESS TO BUSINESS EMPIRE
One of the major challenges for family businesses is undefined roles. One minute someone’s handling marketing; the next, they’re deep in operations. It’s chaotic. The Rockefeller Habits solve this by assigning specific roles, responsibilities and performance indicators. The family excuses disappear and the focus shifts to achieving results.
Accountability can be tricky in a family business. No one wants to be the bad guy
The moment family businesses start thinking bigger, they start winning. I’ve helped companies on the Sunshine Coast and worldwide shift their mindset, adopt the Rockefeller Habits, and transform from small, family-run operations into thriving seven- and eight-figure businesses. By setting up systems, professionalising leadership and expanding into new markets, these businesses position themselves for longterm success.
The bottom line: if you want your family business to thrive, it’s time to stop thinking small. Embrace the Rockefeller Habits, create clear roles, lock in a structured meeting rhythm and hold yourself accountable to results. When you do, your family business has the potential to become so much more. With the right mindset and strategy, the sky’s the limit.
From surviving to thriving: choosing freedom
For most people, success is determined by the freedom to live life on their terms. And if you're not consciously creating a freedombased life, you're unconsciously accepting the opposite.
Every single action we take in our lives has a goal. When you get into your car to drive to work, when you put the kettle on, when you shower, etc. This is especially true in sports and business, where the goal is to do better, be more efficient, effective, and ultimately more successful. And if the research states that winning is more about deep practice and mindset than natural talent, how close can we get to our success by changing our thoughts?
At the age of 23, I left an abusive marriage and found myself as a struggling single mom without any financial security. I was a product of outdated generational values and cultural expectations of women and marriage. It took the experience of my daughter’s traumatic birth for me to make the choice to break those cultural and generational cycles that had kept me from having control over my life
Over the last 20+ years, I've learnt much about the true meaning of living a freedombased life, how to reach it and the pitfalls along the way. I went from struggling financially and emotionally to holding three degrees, (including an MBA and a PhD in human behaviour and business strategy), winning the title of National Business Woman of the Year, representing my country as a fitness competitor, and becoming a successful global entrepreneur, author and business advisor—all while raising three children, now aged 18, 12 and 7.
In your life, when you think about what it will take – what’s the catalyst or the trigger for you to break down cycles that no longer serve you and choose freedom – you don’t have to hit rock bottom. But you do have to stop explaining away other people’s success because you think that they have some circumstance or set of qualities or talent that you have decided is out of your reach.
My name is Dr Samantha Worthington. I am a Psychology for Peak Performance
Specialist, a Consumer Behaviour Expert, and the CEO and Founder of WORTH, the global education platform for everything you need to start and scale your freedombased business. Over the last two decades I've worked with leading international organisations such as Nike, L'Oreal Paris, American Express, Sony, BDO and TAFE Queensland. I have also helped thousands of people, just like you, create, launch and scale their own successful businesses. Many of my clients are now industry trailblazers, including Andrea Beil (TEDx speaker), Jeff Lloyd (author of The Guv ), Kane and Alessia Minkus (award winning entrepreneurs and authors), Dr Harvey Castro (global keynote speaker), Stephanie Ann Ball (soprano and author), and Chan Chaichalermpol (The Menschelist).
Success has always been important to me, not because of status or money, but because of the freedom it affords—the freedom to choose an education, to choose who I work with, where I live and how I spend my time. I created WORTH to share my exact business methods, techniques and tools with a community of like-minded people

How to build a successful family culture in business
“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”
Business owners often become fixated on numbers. After all, business is traditionally defined as an enterprise aimed at making a profit. It’s easy to overlook the wisdom in this quote, often attributed to management consultant Peter Drucker, though it reflects the thinking of several business visionaries.
We tend to ignore culture because it’s intangible and harder to measure, while financials are ever-present and easy to discuss. On the other hand, culture can feel—well, a bit ‘fluffy’. Most business plans don’t mention culture, and many owners struggle to grasp its importance. However, ignoring the impact of a strong company culture can have devastating consequences. A business can seem poised for success, with rising numbers, only to collapse unexpectedly.
One famous example of a company undone by toxic culture is Eagle Boys Pizza, which once rivalled Domino’s and Pizza Hut. Founded in 1987, the chain grew aggressively, peaking at 340 outlets by 2013. However, after new investors took over in 2007, the company shifted its family-oriented approach to position itself as a gourmet pizza brand. Franchisees’ concerns about this and other changes went unheard, eroding trust. Leadership continued to distance itself from franchise owners, and ultimately, the brand collapsed. In this case, culture really did eat strategy for breakfast.
driving culture is. To drive successfully in another country, you must adapt to its culture, not just follow the rules. Likewise, simply changing policies and procedures won’t improve a company’s culture.
Culture is shaped by unspoken rules and group behaviours. Family businesses naturally create strong cultures because they’re built on foundations of trust, communication and shared values. These businesses can unlock even greater potential by recognising what works in their unique culture and addressing what doesn’t. Improved communication, stronger family bonds and a shared commitment to common goals can make family businesses truly unstoppable.
Nowhere is the culture more visible than in family businesses. Culture is like character— it is how a company behaves when no one is watching. Think of it this way: have you ever visited a country where the driving left you terrified? I recently returned from Bali, and my cab driver gave me several near-heart attacks with his close calls. Road rules may be similar worldwide, but driving behaviours vary greatly. In India, for instance, four lanes of traffic often become seven rows of cars, side mirrors are retracted to squeeze into tight spaces, and driving against oncoming traffic is commonplace. The road rules between India and Australia aren’t all that different, but the
Other businesses can learn from this example. Many strive to create a family-like culture by incorporating fundamental values into their vision and mission statements. But simply writing words on paper isn’t enough —culture needs to be seeded and nurtured. To successfully build a family-style culture, leaders must demonstrate an authentic, unwavering commitment to those values. Employees can easily spot when leaders merely pay lip service to the culture or fail to “walk the talk.”
Culture spreads by example - it is contagious. Inauthentic leadership alienates and demoralises employees, while genuine, honest leadership motivates and inspires them. Leadership and culture are the real ingredients of success. By fostering cultures of belonging, trust, safety and resilience, businesses can create something truly powerful.
Balance: the new success for ambitious women
We all dream of building a successful business that helps our family live a fulfilling life. As ambitious women, we chase more money, freedom and joy. But along the way, chaos often sneaks in. Responsibilities stack up, calendars fill, and suddenly, the time we once spent with family, on our health, or simply having fun disappears.
I get it. I’m right there with you. I love pushing myself in my career—it energises me. But through life’s challenges, I’ve learnt an important lesson: when I prioritise the essential areas of my life, I have more energy to focus on my career without guilt. I refuse to let my business ambitions come at the expense of my family, friends, partner, health or happiness.
Life comes with its hurdles. It’s not about avoiding them; it’s about navigating through uncertain times and growing from those experiences. My perspective shifted dramatically when I lost my second daughter. The pain was beyond what I thought I could handle. It could destroy me or inspire me to create something meaningful, a life with purpose. I chose the latter, using that pain as a reminder to cherish every moment. I am forever grateful to Angel Tayla.
Sometimes, we become so focused on chasing the next goal that we delay our happiness until we achieve it. This mindset steals away the love, joy, and adventure available to us right now. Life is too short to ignore the things that truly matter. It might feel like hitting pause when we spend time with family, care for ourselves, or enjoy our hobbies. But is it really? Or is this where we discover the heart of what life is all about?
I believe embracing these moments is key to enjoying a successful life. When we focus on what matters most, external success follows more easily. Over the past decade, I’ve worked with a diverse range of clients— from parents and solo entrepreneurs to corporate leaders. No matter their goals, they all had one thing in common: a need to understand who they truly are. Once my clients gain clarity on their identity and values, they are reignited with passion to create a life of true meaning, prioritising what truly matters over simply chasing career-driven results.
At Inspire Your Focus, we support ambitious women driven to succeed. These women thrive in their careers but have started to realise that their ambition isn’t meeting all their needs, and important parts of their lives are being neglected. These women crave genuine connections —not just with their families, partners, and friends but also with themselves. They want to share more laughs, create lasting memories and engage in activities that light them up. Yet, as life gets busier, they often feel overwhelmed and disconnected from what truly matters. They need practical support to help weave these special moments back into their lives, allowing them to rediscover joy and their true selves amidst the chaos.

Cut the stress of vehicle finance with Drive Connect
For business owners, buying a vehicle can feel like navigating a maze full of hidden traps. Between confusing finance options and aggressive sales tactics, it’s easy to make decisions that can harm your credit and your business. But what if there was a way to bypass the stress and uncertainty?
Tony Cross, founder of Drive Connect, has seen these challenges up close. “People go searching for cars, fall in love with different cars, sign up for finance at several places, and before they know it, their credit is shot,” Tony explains. For small business owners, these decisions can have long-lasting financial consequences.
THE COST OF POOR CREDIT DECISIONS
One of the biggest mistakes of business owners is applying for finance with multiple lenders. Each application leaves a mark on your credit file, reducing your chances of getting the best loan terms. “You can go to a bank and get declined if your credit file has too many hits,” Tony warns. This issue is especially problematic for ABN holders or new business owners with limited credit history.
Drive Connect solves this problem by matching clients with the right lender from the start. “I can have a 10-minute conversation with someone and know exactly where they need to be as far as finance goes,” Tony says. This approach protects clients’ credit scores and ensures they get the best possible deal without damaging their financial future.
HELPING BUSINESS OWNERS MAKE SMART DECISIONS
industry connections to secure the best deals.
“We take the stress out of it, make sure you get a quality vehicle and point you in the right direction with finance,” Tony says. This hands-on approach ensures business owners make informed decisions aligning with their goals.
TRUST BUILT ON EXPERIENCE AND INTEGRITY
A recent example highlights how Drive Connect operates. A woman came to Tony interested in a specific car. After looking into it, he learned the car had a problematic history, so he advised her to pick another one. This honesty and dedication to his clients is what sets Drive Connect apart.
Drive Connect also provides valuations for business owners needing vehicle assessments for settlements or acquisitions.
“If someone says they’ve got ten cars, I can value them in regard to retail, wholesale or forced sale values,” Tony adds. This service helps businesses make better financial decisions when managing assets.
THE DRIVE CONNECT DIFFERENCE
Getting the right vehicle at the right price is crucial for small business owners. “Everyone’s got to start somewhere,” Tony acknowledges, “But it’s important to structure things in an affordable and sustainable way.” Drive Connect works with ABN holders, tradies and other business owners to find vehicles that meet their needs without overextending their budgets.
In addition to finance solutions, Drive Connect acts as a buyer’s agent, using its

Business finance simplified: a guide for entrepreneurs
Securing finance as a business owner can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. Over the years, I’ve seen business owners struggle with the complexities of securing finance, especially when purchasing essential assets like vehicles or revenue-generating equipment. I aim to help simplify that process and offer practical solutions that protect your business and assets.
PROTECT PERSONAL PROPERTY WITH MULTIPLE FINANCE SOURCES
Flexibility is vital when it comes to financing. Every business is unique and your finance solution should be, too. Whether you need a specific loan structure to match your cash flow or want to spread risk across multiple lenders to avoid restrictive agreements, flexibility matters. I often advise clients to consider the long-term, not just the immediate need. “It’s about planning ahead,” I tell them. “Finding great rates is only one component when deciding which lender to use - think about where your business will be in a year or two.” Knowing what your future finance needs are helps us to put an effective plan in place and can contribute to which lenders we use for different assets. Instead of relying on a single lender, spreading your financing needs across different institutions can reduce risk and avoid restrictive agreements. This approach helps ensure that your company’s financing doesn’t become overly reliant on one source (i.e. your home). I’ve worked with many clients to avoid using their home as collateral. Whether it’s a vehicle or machinery, you can use business assets to secure finance and protect your personal property.
HOW A BROKER CAN HELP
Time is another factor that can complicate securing finance. Most small business owners don’t have the luxury of spending days or even weeks filling out applications and gathering documentation. The benefit of working with a broker is that I can liaise directly with your
business accountant. There are also low-doc policies available for up to $250,000 with a major bank. It’s all about making it as painless as possible for you.
Rising interest rates are a hot topic, and I understand why. Business owners are understandably concerned about taking on debt at higher rates. But there are ways to manage this. Fixed-rate loans offer predictability, and in some cases, going with a lender specialising in small business finance—even if the rate is slightly higher— can save you time and hassle. As I always tell my clients, it’s not just about chasing the lowest rate. The difference in 0.5 per cent on a $30,000 loan is minimal, especially if it saves you from the headache of dealing with a large bank’s red tape.
A recent client of mine illustrates this perfectly. He needed to purchase new equipment for his business, but traditional lenders made the process cumbersome. After reviewing his situation, we opted for a non-bank lender. While the rate was slightly higher, the process was streamlined and he had the equipment on the worksite within days. It saved him a lot of hassle and the slight difference in monthly payments was worth the convenience.
If there’s one key takeaway from my years in finance, it is that you shouldn’t try to navigate the complexities of securing business finance alone. Lean on experts who know the industry inside out. As a former credit analyst and now finance broker, I bring a unique perspective— having worked on both sides of the table. This gives my clients a distinct advantage when securing finance.

The right solution is out there, which could set your business up for long-term success. Reach out for expert advice and let’s find a solution that works for you. Creating a lifestyle of freedom with a leap of faith
Kristy and Danny Cook never imagined that a simple lawn care inconvenience would spark a life-changing decision and set them on the path to entrepreneurship. Living on the Sunshine Coast, the couple had long-term careers—Kristy in property management and Danny in the construction and concreting industry. Like many, they sought a better lifestyle, more family time, and greater freedom. Little did they know that a missed lawn appointment would ignite their journey to business success.
“We used to pay someone to do our lawns, but they weren’t reliable,” Kristy recalls. With no immediate solutions in sight, Kristy and Danny jumped into action. “Within 24 hours, we had an ABN and business name. It was an overnight decision.” This leap of faith wasn’t just about mowing lawns—it was about creating a future where they could control their time and build something meaningful on their terms.
NO PLAN B, FULL COMMITMENT
Their confidence in each other and their decision to move forward without a backup plan were vital. “We were committed to making this work and creating a better lifestyle for us in the future,” Kristy says.
Kristy realised that the skills she developed from her career in real estate and Danny’s construction skills could be applied to any business. “It’s a perfect combination of book smarts and hands-on skills,” Kristy explains. “We collaborated and worked together to build what we have now.” Combining their expertise, they found a winning formula for their new venture.
FROM A MOWER THAT WOULDN’T START TO A TEAM OF SIX
“Our first lawn mower wouldn’t even start,” Kristy laughs, recalling the early days. Yet, within a year, they grew from working side by side in the field to managing a team of six. “As of October 15, 2024, we celebrated one year in business. We’ve gone from just the two of us to running four trucks and a full team.”
Their services span from regular lawn maintenance to garden makeovers, exterior pressure cleaning and even body corporate complexes and schools, providing comprehensive services for residential, commercial and acreage properties. The couple’s commitment to quality is reflected in their team. “We don’t hire people to be beneath us. We hire them for their skills and what they can teach us,” Kristy says proudly, describing their crew, which includes horticulturists and tree experts.
FAITH, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY
While the business grew, the Cooks’ faith and strong partnership provided the foundation.
Danny’s unwavering support helped Kristy reach beyond her comfort zone. “He’s always pushed me to achieve the best outcome for myself.”
Their devotion to their family and team expands to the community through their work with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. With government subsidies, they support and care for those who have served their country by regularly providing lawn care services to military families.
For Kristy and Danny, their entrepreneurial leap was about much more than just starting a business—it was about creating the freedom to live on their terms. Their routine allows them to structure their days around health, fitness, and family. “We’ve learned that if we put our health, mind, body, and spirit first, the rest will follow.”
The couple plans to expand their family and continue growing their business while maintaining the balance they’ve worked hard to achieve. “We know that pouring our blood, sweat, and tears into this business now will give us the future we desire.”
Kristy and Danny Cook’s journey is a testament to the power of taking a leap of faith, trusting in your skills, and having the confidence to follow through—without a plan B.

Rooted in family values: The Creative Collective journey
On October 5, 2024, I celebrated 20 years of living in Australia. For almost 18 of those years, I’ve proudly been a business owner on the Sunshine Coast.
The Creative Collective’s journey has been deeply intertwined with the concept of family, both literally and metaphorically. In the early days, I met Katrina ‘Kat’ Lees, who started as an intern and quickly became an invaluable team member. She later transitioned to contractor, franchisee and, since 2014, my business partner.
Our journey together has been one of shared growth and mutual support, navigating through life’s challenges—separations, health scares, and the joys and trials of raising children. Kat is now like family to me, and the involvement of our actual family members only strengthens that bond.
Both of our sisters have contributed significantly to the business over the years, helping shape the company we are today. My younger brother has also been a guiding force, serving on our board of advisors. An old friend from Wellington, whom I consider an older brother, has provided invaluable advice. Another dear friend, Bec, has been a loyal and longserving colleague for almost a decade. These family connections have been instrumental in building a successful business and a supportive and resilient team culture.
professional colleagues, we are a team committed to our company and the values that define us.
Recognition is a big part of what we do. We have a rewards thread where team members praise each other for acts of kindness, like ‘staying late to help with a deadline’ or ‘having my back in a difficult meeting.’ We also have a winning thread where we share personal achievements, from parent brags and holiday snaps to client wins.
Your business can create a sense of belonging, especially for those new to the area—not just for those running it but for everyone involved.
As I approach two decades in Australia and nearly 18 years as a business owner, the importance of family—both in business and life—has never been clearer. The Creative Collective’s journey is a testament to the power of family values, not just within our current team but also with past team members and clients we’ve had the privilege of working with.
While we are commercially focused and have enjoyed great success, our company culture is equally important to us, and we invest in it consistently. Traditions are at the heart of this culture. At our annual Christmas party, we play Pakkeleg, a Danish gift-giving and gift-stealing game. Each business owner takes our staff for one-on-one lunches at least once a year, and we hold an annual gathering—a kind of family holiday—to reset and redefine our direction and purpose.
We celebrate victories and face challenges together, fostering a culture of transparency and team consultation. More than just
We’ve navigated generational challenges, embraced diversity, and maintained a culture that prioritises kindness, trust, and respect.
Our success isn’t just measured in financial terms but in the lasting relationships we’ve built. These are the ties that bind us through the inevitable ups and downs, creating a sense of belonging for everyone involved.
For those venturing into business, my advice is simple: identify and honour your values, embrace change, and continually invest in your people. In doing so, you’ll build more than just a business—you’ll create a legacy that endures.
Perfectly natural laws govern our human experience
A natural law-based system guides our lives every moment. Like gravity, it's always at work, no matter if we understand or accept it.
In my career, I've had an odd relationship with money. I often thought there wasn’t enough. My beliefs controlled what I thought I could earn and I believed working harder would solve the problem. It didn’t. Luckily, life provides. When money was tight, circumstances shifted, leading to better times. Some call it luck. I now see it as intelligent design.
We all live in a perfectly natural intelligent system. What we think about, we create. Our minds shape our reality. I learned I’d limited my earning potential with fixed ideas about money that weren’t serving me.
Investing in personal development has taught me to stretch my imagination and let go of control. By breaking through selfimposed limits, I’ve embraced the natural order of life.
EMBRACING CHANGE
The first principle is to recognise that energy—or God—is. We all have access to a formula for success: Desire + Non-Resistance = Desired Outcome.
Applying this means taking inspired action. Here’s how:
1. Choose a big goal: set a goal beyond your knowledge or comfort. It’s a fantasy you’re committed to making real, something you have decided you want.
2. Make a committed decision: decide to pursue something beyond your comfort zone. These are ‘keystone decisions’ that open new possibilities.
3. Confirmation bias: a ‘keystone decision’ attracts new ideas and plans, building a path to a new chapter in life. New ideas are essential for entrepreneurs.
4. Notice the opportunities: inspired thoughts lead to new opportunities. As I venture into unknowns, my belief in possibilities grows. So can yours.
GUIDING ENTREPRENEURS
My work helps entrepreneurs through these stages:
1. Growth state: you’re either in a productive growth state or a stress-induced primal state. You can’t occupy both at once.
2. Paradigm shift: we provide tools to move beyond traditional development systems. Change starts with a changed mind.
3. Surrender: learn to connect with life’s intelligent plan for your business and your human experience. Surrender to life’s creative force.

Networking as a sustainable business strategy
Hello, I’m Luke Hawley, and I’m here to share insights on how networking can sustain your business over time. Networking is not merely about meeting people but building lasting, meaningful relationships that drive continuous growth. Let’s explore how a strategic approach to networking can be a cornerstone of your long-term business success.
DEVELOPING A CONNECTION STRATEGY
A sustainable networking strategy starts with understanding your ideal customer and their trusted advisors. Knowing your ideal customer is fundamental. For example, if you’re a real estate agent, your ideal customers might include homeowners looking to upgrade or downgrade, investors selling properties and families relocating. Once you have a clear picture of your ideal customer, the next step is identifying their trusted advisors—mortgage brokers, family accountants and contractors, in this case. These are the professionals your customers turn to before they reach out to you. To build strong referral partnerships, understand the questions your potential clients ask their advisors. Equip these advisors with the resources they need to recommend your services confidently. For instance, as a real estate agent, providing mortgage brokers with free property valuations and market reports can be invaluable. This proactive approach nurtures business referral partnerships and positions you as a helpful resource rather than just a service provider.
IDENTIFYING THE RIGHT NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
Engage in these spaces by participating in discussions, sharing helpful content and connecting with key individuals.
PREPARING YOUR PITCH
A well-prepared pitch is essential for making a solid first impression. Your elevator pitch should be clear, concise and tailored to your audience. Practice until it feels natural. For instance, if you’re a health and wellness coach, your pitch might be: "Hi, I’m Luke, a certified health and wellness coach. I specialise in helping busy professionals manage stress and improve their overall wellbeing. I’m looking to connect with GPs who want to offer their patients additional support for lifestyle changes."
When delivering your pitch, have a flexible structure, be succinct, make it relevant and share your passion. Real-life examples help your listeners understand your value and how you can help them.
FOLLOW-UP STRATEGY
The real value of networking is realised through effective follow-up. Reach out to your new connections within a day of the event. Document your new contacts in your CRM or notebook, including details from your conversation and any follow-up actions. If you haven’t heard back after a few days, follow up using a different format such as email or phone.
Scan the QR code to access the webinar (no email address is required).
Choosing the right networking opportunities is crucial. Not all events will align with your goals, so be selective. Look for industryspecific events, such as conferences and trade shows, where you can meet potential clients and partners. Local business groups, chambers of commerce and community groups also offer regular networking events that are great for meeting local business owners and community leaders. Online platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook groups can be as valuable as in-person events.
If a mutual connection is introduced to you, keep them in the loop and ask if they can help facilitate further contact. Move longterm connections into a ‘long-burn’ cycle. How to choose the right business advisor
Selecting the right business advisor can be the difference between survival versus success. The ideal coach will offer valuable guidance and provide deep, actionable insights that create real results.
Keely is the founder and CEO of Liinchpin, a leading strategic growth company. Over the past decade, she has worked with and coached hundreds of Australian businesses from start-ups to those generating over $200M in annual revenue.
Her insights help identify four core pillars of success that can help when choosing the right advisor.
1LEADERSHIP
At the core of every successful business is its people. Outstanding leadership is not just about strategy but about understanding and influencing human behaviour. The ability to inspire, elevate and bring structure to a team is essential for long-term success.
Keely White has built a reputation for her ability to create high-performance cultures. She doesn’t just teach leadership principles, she works closely with business owners to pull greatness out of their teams. “High performance isn’t about ‘management,’ nobody likes to be managed by someone else. High-performance teams are self-managed teams with great leaders influencing them to be their best,” Keely says.
2SIMPLICITY
Overly complex business strategies are often ineffective. If they’re hard to understand, they’ll be even harder to implement. Simplicity is key.
“One of the core principles of Liinchpin is to simplify. If it’s too confusing, it’s just not good enough,” Keely explains, “But it’s only the first step. Implementation requires follow-through, and a lack of it is often a key frustration for business owners.”
Liinchpin lives by the philosophy of R. Buckminster Fuller, who said, “If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don’t
bother just trying to teach them. Instead, give them a tool, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking.”
Each of Liinchpin’s strategies is taught as a simple framework. The combination of simplicity within a practical model produces results.
3
BREADTH AND DEPTH
A great coach helps you to identify and solve constraints for good; this is how you grow.
“You have two choices: you can repeat the same year over and over, or you can make a fundamental shift and evolve to the next level,” says Keely. To make a permanent change, a great coach must have a combination of both breadth and depth across the business landscape.
Keely has spent over a decade deep in the trenches with hundreds of Australian founders, seeing behind the curtain of their financial platforms, team dynamics and everyday struggles, gaining unparalleled insight into the deep inner workings of business.
4
NUMBER CLARITY
The financial health of a business is its lifeblood. Yet, many business owners struggle to maintain control over cash flow and profitability. A key role of an effective advisor is to provide number clarity, simplify the data and help you embed good structure around using it.
“Success leaves clues. Visibility over numbers and data is your secret weapon to making truly informed decisions with confidence,” Keely says.
UNLOCKING TRUE SUCCESS
Choosing the right business advisor is about finding someone who can offer more than just advice—it’s about finding someone who can help you fundamentally transform your business in simple ways that create actual profit, success and freedom.

OLIVIA RATTEN Principal and Product Innovation Coach
Bringing joy and profit as a product innovation coach
Growing up in a family business that manufactures pet food, I experienced firsthand the relentless demands of being ‘on the tools’ every day, constantly solving problems and striving to stay ahead in a competitive market. Sleepless nights spent worrying about sales, product strategies, and the next steps were a regular occurrence. This reality is something many small and medium-sized business owners still face today.
I’m Olivia, founder of The Outside Leader and a product innovation coach. My passion is helping businesses like yours move beyond these daily struggles to unlock growth, creativity and ease. This passion was born from my experience and the realisation that structured collaboration can transform business outcomes.
MY JOURNEY TO DESIGN THINKING
In our family business, we were always busy managing day-to-day operations. Like many small and medium-sized businesses, we didn’t often have the time or space to think strategically or innovate. Opportunities to improve processes or products were frequently overlooked because we lacked the tools to act on them.
My turning point came when I discovered design thinking. It taught me how to blend creativity with practical business outcomes. By learning to collaborate and apply structured frameworks, I realised that teams could solve problems more efficiently, enjoy the process and produce better results. This is where my mission as a coach was born. I help businesses implement these tools and frameworks to achieve both joy and profit.
THE CHALLENGE MANY BUSINESSES FACE
For consumer-packaged goods businesses, staying competitive is harder than ever. You might sense shifts in the market or notice changing customer needs, but the daily grind leaves little room for exploring those opportunities. Many business leaders feel stuck in a cycle of working harder without seeing better results.
Does this sound familiar?
The problem is not a lack of ideas, but a lack of resources, time and the right approach to turn those ideas into reality. This is where the power of innovation through collaboration can be transformative.
THE POWER OF COLLABORATION
I’ve learned that structured collaboration is the key to unlocking a team’s potential. You create a dynamic cycle of innovation by bringing your team together to design, experiment and make decisions. This process isn’t about relying on external experts, but tapping into the wealth of knowledge already within your team.
Creative collaboration allows your team to quickly test and refine ideas, leading to faster and more successful outcomes. It fosters joy and engagement as everyone becomes part of the innovation process rather than feeling weighed down by the daily grind. This shift from ‘working harder’ to ‘working smarter’ is where breakthroughs happen.
WHY I DO THIS WORK
My mission is to help family businesses and SMEs unlock their full potential through innovation. From personal experience, I know that innovation isn’t just for big corporations. With the right approach, any business can foster creativity, growth and competitiveness.
By implementing structured collaboration techniques, you can turn what you already know into actionable strategies that drive growth and profitability. The result? Better products, faster outcomes and a more engaged, aligned and joyful team. When your team is thriving, your business will too.
AN INVITATION
If this resonates with you, I invite you to join my free workshop. This is your opportunity to experience firsthand how structured collaboration can bring ease, flow and momentum to your business. Together, we’ll explore how to unlock your team’s full potential and build a more innovative, joyful future.
Connections 4 Business: a holistic approach to IT
Mark Southwell doesn’t fit the mould of a typical IT professional. His uniqueness sets Connections 4 Business (C4B) apart from all the other telecommunications and IT providers.
“You’re weird, Mark!” he’ll often hear. His response? A smile and a simple: “Thank you.”
MORE THAN JUST I.T. SUPPORT
Connections 4 Business isn’t just about fixing computers or troubleshooting tech issues.
Mark and his team form partnerships with clients, delivering tailored, high-quality solutions that ensure both their businesses succeed. By collaborating with trusted partners, C4B helps companies build reliable technological platforms that drive growth.
When Sally Dando, of Safeguard Pest Control, and her team considered purchasing a new business they turned to Mark. He helped with system integration and ensured smooth operations for their field staff, managed internet and phone services and even found an electrician to fit out their new office on time.
“We trust Mark,” Sally says. “He doesn’t just provide technical support; he solves problems we didn’t even know we had.”
This level of trust is why clients turn to C4B not only for technology solutions but also for guidance in finding the right people and processes to maximise the value of that technology.
LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIPS
One of Mark’s longest-standing clients is St James Lutheran College in Hervey Bay. Since 2013, when the school had just three rooms, C4B has been one of its most trusted IT partners. Today, with over 1,200 students and a lean IT team of just two staff, the school’s technology runs smoothly thanks to the processes Mark helped implement. St James’ IT Manager Trevor Sands jokes, “If I get run over by a bus, call Mark - he designed everything here!”
PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR COMPLEX CHALLENGES
TRUST BUILT ON RELIABILITY
Mark’s ability to think ahead and provide proactive solutions ensures his clients return time and time again. When his six-year-old computer failed, Alan Nash of Aspire Real Estate feared he had lost all the company’s business-critical data, so he called C4B. Within minutes of arriving, Mark followed the prepared plan to transfer the drive to another machine and Aspire was back up and running.
“Mark delivers what we need and never over charges,” Alan said. “So, I knew I could trust Mark to replace our dead computer without a quote.”
Mark’s approach is about simplifying technology. Sometimes, the simplest, most straightforward solution is the best. For example, when Hamilton Island experienced a power outage, Mark’s foresight—ensuring the printing of guest checkout paperwork each night—meant hundreds of guests could still check out smoothly. The resort approved Mark’s request for uninterruptible power for the checkout system the next day.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO I.T.
Before engaging with any client, Mark conducts a thorough technology audit to evaluate the business’s technological needs and broader goals. If a client wants broken computers fixed at the cheapest price, C4B isn’t the right fit. However, if they’re looking for a true IT partner, they should contact Mark and his team at Connections 4 Business. Use the QR code on this page to access the Connections 4 Business website and learn more about how C4B can help you with IT support that goes far beyond fixing computers.

The power of financial planning at every life stage
We are all presented with challenges in life at every stage of the journey. One of my most significant occurred when my 21-year marriage ended. My teenage children and I were left with nothing—no professional help, no support system and the frustration of not being a “big-ticket” client. But I didn’t let that experience break me. It fuelled my passion to educate myself to help others through similar situations.
I’m Cathy Irwin, the owner and director of Serafina Wealth Management. While I specialise in providing comprehensive advice for people going through financial trauma— divorce, losing a spouse or simply feeling overwhelmed by your financial situation—I am here to help you at every stage of life because financial planning is critical for everyone, regardless of where you start.
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO LIFELONG LESSONS
I grew up in a small farming community in New South Wales, where life was simple and financial resources were scarce. We were a self-sufficient farming family who wore handme-downs and had home haircuts. The finer things in life were out of reach. My father was an entrepreneur who farmed to raise meat for the family butcher shops and later focused on fine wool and worm farming.
Those experiences shaped my understanding of economic hardship. I know that financial insecurity affects more than your wallet—it impacts your confidence, your opportunities and even your children’s future. I want you to feel empowered to make informed financial decisions that improve your life and the lives of your families.
HELPING YOU AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE
When you take control of your financial future, great things can happen. I worked with a young person who, like you, had big dreams but wasn’t sure where to start. He came to me
with little savings but a strong desire to create a better financial future. We developed a plan to manage his budget, set up an emergency fund and started building his wealth both inside and outside of superannuation. It wasn’t an overnight transformation, but three years later, he’s more than quadrupled his combined savings from $20,000 to $100,000 and is well on his way to buying his first home. Your financial concerns might look different if you’re a little further along in life— perhaps in your forties or fifties. Maybe you’re carrying a mortgage, raising children and trying to plan for retirement all at once. It can feel overwhelming, but that’s where I come in. We’d start by reviewing your overall financial position, including your budget and savings outside of super, to ensure you have some economic stability.
We further assess your need for personal insurance and protect your greatest asset, your income, to have the right cover for your family if you cannot work due to illness or injury. I’ve seen firsthand how just one lost income can destabilise an entire household. Together, we’d create a plan that balances paying down debt, boosting your super contributions and ensuring you're financially protected if something unexpected happens. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution—it’s about finding what works best for you and your specific goals.
LET’S BUILD YOUR FINANCIAL PLAN
Whether you’re just starting out, in the middle of your career or nearing retirement, it’s never too early—or too late—to take control of your finances. I always compare financial planning to building a house. You wouldn’t start construction without a vision and a plan; the same goes for your financial future. I’d love to be your guide, helping you make confident financial decisions that will positively impact your future. Let’s work together to build the financial security you deserve.
Precious metals on the rise: investing in gold and silver
In today’s investment landscape, diversification is crucial for building resilient portfolios. A recent report by the World Gold Council highlights how geopolitical risks, which are often sudden and unpredictable, can lead to financial market turmoil and damage investor portfolios. The report emphasises that, in assessing how various assets respond to sudden geopolitical risk spikes, gold’s strong performance during such events becomes evident.
Recently, the price of gold surpassed AUD 4,234 per ounce, reflecting a +35.32% increase over the past 12 months. Silver, on the other hand, has reached AUD 51.25, showing an impressive +41.45% rise in the same period.
Key factors include China’s economic stimulus measures and increasing demand for safe-haven assets. Additionally, escalating geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, have further boosted demand for both gold and silver.
WHY PRECIOUS METALS?
Physical precious metals come with no counterparty risk. Gold, in particular, can act as an insurance policy. It is a highly liquid asset that may protect against falling real estate prices, sporadic inflation, volatile global market conditions and geopolitical tensions. Investors also stand to gain if the value of gold or silver appreciates, as it has done consistently over the past decade.
In 2024, silver outperformed gold in terms of returns, positioning itself as an increasingly attractive option for investors. While silver is often seen as a more affordable alternative to gold, it offers much more than its reputation as a substitute. Silver is also a highly liquid and valuable industrial metal, playing a critical role in key sectors such as electronics, renewable energy and healthcare.
HOW TO INVEST IN PRECIOUS METALS
Gold Bullion Australia (GBA) provides a wide range of investment options. With an established presence across the country, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, GBA covers all aspects of precious metals, from physical bullion sales and buybacks to secure vaulting solutions and safe deposit box hire. Investors can easily purchase, store and access their holdings for withdrawal or inspection at any time, ensuring peace of mind and a seamless experience regarding the safety of their assets.
Trustees with a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) can include precious metals in their portfolios. The most attractive options are bullion bars and Pool Allocated products. SMSF holders who acquire and store their precious metals using GBA’s insured vaulting services have access to online metal account statements, which provide current valuations, transaction histories and account details.
GBA also offers a portfolio management service at its Singapore division. This service uses advanced algorithms to manage investments across five precious metals based on the customer’s risk profile. All investments are backed by physical assets and fully audited for the client.
At Gold Bullion Australia, investing in precious metals is more than just a transaction. It marks the beginning of a carefully curated journey towards wealth preservation, growth and legacy-building. The company’s mission is to empower customers to make informed investment decisions and secure their financial future through the enduring value of precious metals, providing a stress-free investment experience that guarantees quality, integrity and expert guidance every step of the way.

THE UNSEEN ADVOCATE: HOW A BUYER’S AGENT CAN SAVE YOU TIME, MONEY AND STRESS
BY SHANE HOWELL
I’ve seen it happen over and over again. You’ve spent months dreaming of owning your home, buying an investment or looking for a project. You’ve spent hours scrolling through listings and gone to countless inspections, only to find that perfect property slipping through your fingers at the last moment. Or worse, you finally purchase a property, only to discover it wasn’t really what you wanted or had hidden issues, or perhaps you’ve paid more than it’s worth in the current market. It’s devastating—and the stress of realising you’ve bought the wrong property is more than just financial. It’s emotional. It’s time lost, frustration building and gives you the sense that you’ve been caught off guard in a high-stakes game.
I’m Shane Howell, and I’ve spent the last 20 years in the real estate industry on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve seen the toll it takes on buyers when they try to navigate this ever-changing market alone. That’s why I’m here, as a buyer’s agent, to ensure this doesn’t happen to you.
On the Sunshine Coast, demand for property is at an all-time high while the number of available properties continues to drop. For buyers, this means fierce competition, fluctuating prices and properties being snapped up almost as soon as they’re listed.
The market is fast-paced, and it’s easy to feel confused and pressured into decisions or miss critical details when trying to go it alone. With a buyer’s agent, you have someone who understands market trends, negotiates confidently, and knows how to find the right property for your needs.
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE: BUYER’S AGENTS VS SELLING AGENTS
Having worked as a selling agent for many years, I’ve seen both sides of the transaction. This unique perspective has helped me build solid and trusted relationships with selling agents across the Sunshine Coast. Selling agents have an important job—they work to get the best possible price for the property owner. They focus on showcasing their seller’s property in the best light and negotiating on their behalf.
As a buyer’s agent, I focus entirely on you. I bring my experience from the selling side to help you navigate the process. I understand the property listing strategies and use that insight to your advantage. It’s important to note that both buyer’s and selling agents play crucial
roles; together, they create a smooth and positive experience for both parties. The real benefit of having a buyer’s agent is that you have someone fully dedicated to your interests and your success in finding and securing the right property.
HOW I CAN HELP YOU
You’re not just getting someone to search for properties on your behalf when you engage me; you’re gaining a trusted advisor who helps you make informed decisions at every stage. One of the first things I do is sit down with you and understand your property journey—what you’ve been through, what you’re looking for and what’s important to you.
From there, I handle everything—searching for properties, attending inspections, organising building and pest checks and negotiating terms. I tap into an extensive network of agents who have respect for my industry experience. Therefore, I am privy to one of the largest selections of off-market and pre-market property opportunities that are sometimes up to six months or more before coming to market. I’ve built relationships with industry professionals, so I know who to call for reliable advice on renovations, inspections and financing. And when it comes to auctions, I’m there to represent you, using my market knowledge to ensure you don’t overpay or get swept up in the excitement.
A buyer’s agent is there to save you time, money and stress. With someone in your corner who knows the market inside and out, you won’t have to worry about whether you’re making the right decision— you’ll know you are. You deserve to have someone looking out for you in what is likely one of your life’s most significant financial decisions. Let me help you make it a successful one. Call me on 0400 271 967. u

FINDING THE BALANCE BETWEEN LIVING FOR TODAY AND PLANNING FOR TOMORROW
BY RICHARD ELMES
When clients share their stories, nearly all revolve around family— whether it’s children’s laughter, the bond of marriage or the wisdom passed down from parents and grandparents. In all its forms, family is central to the joys, responsibilities and challenges that define us. Financial stability plays a vital role in supporting these connections. As professional financial advisors, we at Agile Wealth guide you through each stage of life, ensuring your finances are secure and flexible enough to adapt to life’s changes. Financial success is more than just numbers—it’s about finding balance. We’re privileged to help generations of families navigate the delicate balance between living for today and planning for tomorrow.
STARTING OUT: LAYING THE FOUNDATION
When you’re starting out, time and health are on your side. These early years are the perfect moment to make intelligent financial decisions that will pay off later. Whether you’re beginning your career, buying your first home or starting a family, your choices today will set the stage for a lifetime of financial freedom.
We often see our younger clients growing in their careers, establishing their families and laying the groundwork for success. Some may have family support, while others rely solely on their hard work—but every journey begins with a plan. As Greg Reid says, “A dream written down is a goal. A goal written down becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dream a reality.”
At Agile Wealth, we’re here to help you turn your dreams into action. Let’s start by writing down your goals, creating a plan and setting you on the path to financial success—because the only way to get anywhere is to begin.

LIVING LARGE IN SMALL SPACES: HOW AUSSIE TINY HOUSES REDEFINES FREEDOM
BY SHARI HALL
Aussie Tiny Houses, co-owned by Thiago Perrone and Fabio Paullucci and managed alongside their long-time friend Alexandre Monteiro, offers more than just homes on wheels. It provides freedom—freedom to downsize, simplify and live affordably. For Thiago and Alexandre, this business isn’t just about building homes; it’s about offering people an entirely new lifestyle. It’s a journey that began when two Brazilian immigrants met in a Sydney warehouse. It has since evolved into a business that helps Australians find beauty, comfort and sustainability in tiny living.
TINY LIVING SOLUTIONS THAT CREATE FREEDOM
When Thiago and Fabio first met while working at the Havaianas warehouse in Sydney, they were far from imagining their future partnership. Thiago, a qualified economist, had left his career in Brazil for a fresh start in Australia, while Fabio came to learn English. Over time, the two became close friends, sharing dreams of building something of their own.
Years later, after both explored different careers, Fabio introduced Thiago to the growing tiny house movement, which was already flourishing in the United States. “We were inspired by what was happening abroad,” Thiago explains. “Housing prices were skyrocketing, and tiny homes were providing people a chance to own something beautiful and affordable without the burden of traditional real estate.”
Alex Monteiro and Thiago Perrone
Aussie Tiny Houses grew from that initial spark, offering uniquely designed, transportable homes that can be placed on properties without council approval. While no formal approval is required, specific regulations vary by local council, and homeowners should check with their local authorities regarding the placement of tiny homes on their property.
WHO BUYS TINY HOUSES?
The appeal of tiny living is wide-ranging, attracting diverse customers across Australia. From young people entering the real estate market to retirees downsizing, Aussie Tiny Houses has built homes for every lifestyle. Alexandre notes, “We have everyone from first-time home buyers who can’t afford traditional housing to retirees looking to downsize and live more simply. There are also investors interested in Airbnb or short-term rentals and caravan park owners wanting to offer something different.”
CUSTOMISED LIVING, BEAUTIFUL SPACES
One of the key attractions of Aussie Tiny Houses is the broad range of designs to meet the specific needs of each buyer. From compact one-bedroom cabins to larger models with three sleeping spaces, the homes are locally manufactured and designed to be functional and aesthetically pleasing. “Our homes may be tiny, but they don’t feel small,” Alexandre proudly shares. “We work hard to optimise every inch of space, and the final product often surprises people.”
Despite their small size, Aussie Tiny Houses are fully equipped with modern amenities, including kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces that feel just like a fullsized home. The homes can be outfitted with off-grid capabilities, such as solar panels, composting toilets and greywater systems, offering complete independence from traditional utilities.
“These homes aren’t just affordable; they’re beautiful,” says Thiago. “We use high-quality materials like BlueScope’s TRUECORE® steel frame, sleek cabinetry and large windows to bring natural light into the space. People are always amazed at how luxurious and spacious tiny homes can feel.”
A BUSINESS ROOTED IN FAMILY VALUES
The sense of family at Aussie Tiny Houses is evident in how Thiago and Alexandre run their business. Both Brazilian by birth, they’ve
built a working environment that reflects their cultural values—commitment, excellence, transparency, trust and family. “We treat our team like family,” Thiago explains. “We make decisions together, we support each other, and that’s reflected in our work.”
This tight-knit culture extends to their customers. “We want people to feel like they’re part of something special when they buy from us,” Alexandre adds. “It’s not just a house; it’s a lifestyle change, a way to live more freely and sustainably.”
THE FUTURE OF AUSSIE TINY HOUSES
As the tiny house movement continues to gain momentum, Thiago and Alexandre have big plans. “We’re always listening to our customers
and looking for new ways to meet their needs,” says Thiago. The company is exploring new designs, including options for permanent structures that maintain the ethos of tiny living but meet the criteria for traditional homeownership.
“People want more control over their living situations,” Thiago adds. “They want affordability, sustainability and freedom. That’s what we provide—tiny living solutions—and we’re excited to keep pushing the boundaries of what tiny living can offer.” u

KIM SERAFINI, THE DYNAMIC ENTREPRENEUR BEHIND POSITIVE PRIME, HAS A STORY THAT INTERTWINES CORPORATE SUCCESS, PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION AND A DEEP COMMITMENT TO HUMAN HEALING.
UNLOCK THE POWER OF YOUR MIND WITH POSITIVE PRIME
BY SHARI HALL // PHOTOS BY LAUREN BIGGS PHOTOGRAPHY
From her early career in corporate change management to her innovative work in neuroscience and positive psychology, Kim Serafini’s journey is driven by a desire to help people unlock the power of their minds and emotions.
A graduate of Bond University, Kim launched her career in corporate change management. “I spent the early part of my life taking tens of thousands of people in one organisation and helping them work together under a new umbrella,” she recalls. Kim worked on mergers and acquisitions from London to New York, navigating the turbulence of integrating large companies.
FROM BURNOUT TO BREAKTHROUGH
The pressures of business life eventually caught up with Kim, leading to a turning point during a near-death experience while driving. “My heartbeat had stopped. I lost consciousness and drove off the road. Then my heart started again after the pause. I should have died,” she shares.
The incident was the first of six more. It forced her to confront the toll of her stressful twists and turns and intense work ethic. “Why did I need to go unconscious to know my spirit continues?” she reflects. This moment set her on a new path toward a more spiritual and fulfilling life.
Seeking a fresh direction, Kim revisited the wisdom shared at the Tony Robbins’ life mastery events she attended decades before, which inspired her to follow her passion. “If you really want to feel fulfilled, you need to do something you’re passionate about,” Robbins advised. Those words propelled Kim’s shift from her business world’s high risk and rewards aspects to wellness innovation.
Kim created Lithos Therapy, a globally recognised treatment. “I invented what is now known as Hot Stone Massage, using heated black marble and chilled white marble at exactly 53 degrees,” she explains. Her technique transformed massage therapy, blending ancient wisdom with modern science to accelerate healing.

A pivotal part of Kim’s spiritual journey is her connection to Seraphinite, a stone mined in eastern Siberia, known as the stone of angel wings. Seraphinite is particularly attuned to the Heart Chakra and is known to nurture the heart, facilitate personal growth and encourage exploration of higher states of consciousness. She wears a ring made from Seraphinite to symbolise healing, not just for herself but for those around her.
Kim’s deepening spirituality led her to explore emotions and the mind’s role in health. In her experience, “People who didn’t heal usually had some strife in their mind.” This insight launched her journey into positive psychology and neuroscience.
FLOW STATE IN THREE MINUTES
Her research culminated in the development of Positive Prime, a revolutionary tool combining images, affirmations, and neuroscience to ‘prime’ the mind for positivity. “Positive Prime
has been proven to put your brain into a state of flow within three minutes,” she explains. This flow state, lasting up to six hours, can enhance mood and mental clarity.
Kim’s partnership with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) resulted in breakthrough findings presented at the prestigious Society for Neuroscience in San Diego. “Nothing has ever been proven before to change your brain waves within three minutes,” she says proudly.
But the journey wasn’t easy. “It took a lot of courage to go down that research path. If we publish something that says it doesn’t work, I will probably not have a business,” Kim admits. Despite the risks, the research validated Positive Prime’s lifechanging potential.
Positive Prime’s formula blends scientifically chosen images, such as smiles and green tree canopies, to prompt the production of serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. “Your brain automatically thinks you’re smiling, and you start to produce more happy hormones,” Kim explains.
Her dedication to healing extends beyond neuroscience. “I've made millions of dollars, and I really am a tech entrepreneur, but I’m just a spiritual being who wants to heal people,” she reflects. This personal mission fuels her commitment to helping others experience profound transformation.
Her work also aligns with epigenetics, the study of how environments affect gene expression. “Positive Prime changes the global or macro environment for your brain, which then changes your mind,” she explains. Kim believes that by shaping our mental environment, we can improve psychological and physical health.
Kim’s journey from the corporate world to brain science and healing demonstrates her unwavering dedication to helping people live fuller, more meaningful lives. “When people feel better, they behave differently, and we get better societal outcomes,” she explains.
As she continues to refine Positive Prime and explore new scientific frontiers, Kim remains at the forefront of positive psychology and brain health. Her innovative work transforms lives, proving that with the right tools, we can unlock the power of our minds to achieve greater happiness and success. u

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and once you speak with the highly affable and engaging Ben Hughes, you’ll quickly see why he’s just a chip off the old(er) block that is his dad, Phil – an equally spirited larrikin. So, it’s unsurprising then that the duo both found themselves drawn towards the same career, tapping into the opportunities available in the plumbing industry.
But what is unexpected is that it was 56-year-old Phil Hughes who followed in his son’s footsteps, taking up the trade later in life and joining Ben at his thriving business as one of his four employees.
Having recently completed a short course in Restricted Electrical Licence (REL) Skill Set (SSUEE0010) thanks to the Construction Skills Queensland funding he successfully applied for, Ben’s future–and plumbing business–has never looked brighter.
This course is a perfect combination of online and inclass learning that’s supported by great and very experienced teachers which, suits a business owner and busy dad like me down to a tee.
A professionally qualified plumber, Ben first trained for and gained his Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420) at
Father-son duo tap into greater success
TAFE Queensland more than 10 years ago, before going on to build his business, Hughes Plumbing Contractors, from the ground up.
Always one to push and challenge himself, Ben followed this up a few years later by going on to complete the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920), providing him with the advanced skills and knowledge required for him to offer a range of plumbing specialities.
It’s safe to say then that Ben, a proud Turrbul and Yuggera First Nations person and father of two girls, has become a bit of a fan of TAFE Queensland.
“I really enjoyed my previous studies and I chose to do the short course at TAFE Queensland this time around not only because I’m engaged with ongoing learning and development, but also because I wanted to upskill on a different level while gaining another qualification,” Ben said.
“This course was a perfect combination of online and in-class learning that’s supported by great and very experienced teachers, which suits a business owner and busy dad like me down to a tee.”
Running a busy family-operated business that serves clients from as far as Bundaberg and Gympie, across to Warwick and Toowoomba, and down to the Gold Coast, certainly keeps Ben on his toes.
With over 2200 clients on their books, Hughes Plumbing Contractors often gets asked to connect or replace hot water units as part of their service.
Ben Hughes (L) and Phil Hughes (R)
“Safety is our biggest priority, so it’s really important that we do this job safely and properly,” Ben said.
“Without this qualification, our customers would have to engage a third party to hook up their hot water system. We work in such a geographically diverse area that we have to have this skill, as sparkies aren’t always readily available, especially in rural and remote places.”
After watching on with pride as Ben grew his skills and subsequently his business, Phil found himself inspired to pursue a career change. Working as a labourer mending fences, Phil decided the physically demanding work was too much of a struggle and he needed to change his career prospects.
“I found fence mending tough as I got older and watching Ben grow his business and seeing it go from strength to strength made me realise there was a more viable future in being a plumber,” Phil said.
“So the decision to pick up some new skills, switch careers and study with TAFE Queensland wasn’t a hard one. I haven’t looked back since,” he said.
“While studying as a mature aged student has been hard because technology has changed so much, I’ve really enjoyed the challenge. The younger students—despite the odd joke— have been very patient with me, and the teachers are fantastic and so encouraging.”
Having since joined the growing ranks of aspiring plumbers who have completed their apprenticeship training at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus, Phil is now a self-declared ‘proud and qualified tradie’.
Like Ben, Phil is keen to grow his knowledge and skills, recently completing the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (CPC40920) and planning to also undertake the Restricted Electrical Licence (REL) Skill Set (SSUEE0010) short course.
While Ben has worked hard to grow his business and enjoys the diversity of his work, he’s not resting on his laurels just yet, with the goals of expanding his team (“but not so big that we aren’t a family business anymore”), becoming more tech savvy, and achieving repeat business very much at the forefront of his plans.
As for Phil, he’s grateful to have a new direction – one that he sees himself as lucky to be able to navigate alongside his son.
“It’s been pretty special watching Ben grow from a little person who’s now running his own business and looking after our customers while supporting me.
“What I really like about our job is the trust that our customers place in us to help them fix whatever problem they have and for me, that is a real privilege.”

Empowering local and international students for a thriving future
BY SHANNARA GODDARD
The Sunshine Coast is a beautiful destination and an emerging powerhouse for innovation, entrepreneurship and education.
In recent years, fostering local talent and addressing skill shortages have become central to regional development. The Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with Study Sunshine Coast, is taking steps to ensure young people in the region are equipped with the skills and opportunities to thrive in a rapidly evolving workforce. A significant initiative includes both developing local talent and welcoming international students, who contribute to the economic and cultural fabric of the region.
THE IMPORTANCE OF RETAINING LOCAL YOUTH TALENT
A vibrant economy is built on its human capital, and keeping young talent in the region is critical for long-term prosperity. Industry leaders have reported a shortage of skilled workers, making it essential to support young people in building their careers locally. The region is focusing on education, training, internships and industry placements to ensure a futureready workforce.
Study Sunshine Coast is reshaping talent development by creating strong pathways between education and industry. Programs focusing on practical skills and employability in high-growth sectors like technology, advanced manufacturing and health services are laying the foundation for regional growth. These efforts go beyond education—they future-proof the economy by empowering young people to stay, innovate and invest in their local communities.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: AN ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL ASSET
In 2023, the Sunshine Coast’s international education sector added $155.6 million to the regional economy, with international student spending generating $170.9 million. Their contribution, however, goes beyond economics. International students enrich our communities with diversity and cultural exchange.
With 3,530 international student enrolments in 2023, the financial benefits are clear, but the exposure to global perspectives these students bring to classrooms and workplaces is invaluable. International learners foster a global learning environment for local students without them needing to leave the region.
CULTURAL ENRICHMENT THROUGH HOMESTAYS
One initiative that strengthens ties between international students and the local community is homestay programs. By welcoming international students into their homes, Sunshine Coast families experience cultural exchange, fostering greater understanding and lasting bonds across nationalities.
Hosting international students allows families to contribute to their educational journey while enjoying cultural enrichment. It’s a chance to break down barriers, share traditions and form global relationships—all while showcasing the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and friendly spirit.
HOW STUDY SUNSHINE COAST SUPPORTS STUDENTS
Study Sunshine Coast is vital in supporting local and international students throughout their educational journeys. The organisation provides guidance and a supportive network of student services. Initiatives such as talent development programs, networking with local businesses and social and cultural activities help students integrate into the community and gain valuable real-world experience.
By creating an environment where students feel connected and supported, Study Sunshine Coast addresses the need to bridge the gap between education and employment. International students, who contribute to the region’s economic, social and cultural vitality, are also actively supported in their academic and career pursuits, ensuring they remain a valuable part of the Sunshine Coast’s ecosystem.
The Sunshine Coast is on a path toward becoming a leading destination for local and international talent. Through innovative partnerships between the Sunshine Coast Council, Study Sunshine Coast and local businesses, the region is embracing a future where education, diversity and economic growth go hand in hand.
By investing in youth, retaining local talent and welcoming international students, the Sunshine Coast is ensuring it meets workforce demands and is poised for long-term prosperity. This collaborative effort will create a thriving, diverse, resilient region ready to face future challenges.
As the world increasingly values skills and global perspectives, the Sunshine Coast is taking the lead in nurturing tomorrow’s talent—and the future looks brighter than ever. u
RDAMBSC: ONE VOICE DRIVING INVESTMENT, INCLUSION AND IMPACT
BY GAVIN KEELEY

n April 1, 2024, following notification in 2023 from the Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain, the two previously independent Regional Development Australias of Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast were merged to form RDA Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast (RDAMBSC).
The Federal Minister appointed me as the inaugural Chair, and an inaugural board has been recruited through a merit-based application process and appointed by an independent selection panel as a board with ten people from across our region representing our diverse business sectors.
Following a recruitment process, the board appointed Jacqueline Steel as CEO of RDAMBSC in May 2024.
Regional Development Australia (RDA) is a Federal Government program that consists of a network of local leaders who work across all levels of government, business and community groups to improve their regions.
Economic and workforce development: supporting initiatives that drive economic growth, innovation and entrepreneurship in regional areas.
Strategic regional planning: assisting in the development of plans that address regional needs and opportunities.
Informing government programs: providing insights and feedback to help shape government policies and infrastructure investments.
Community engagement: collaborating with diverse communities, including First Nations people, to ensure inclusive and vibrant regions.
The board has set the RDAMBSC vision and focus areas to be one voice driving investment, inclusion and impact through region-led partnerships to sustain the Moreton Bay-Sunshine Coast-Noosa economic growth corridor to 2032 and beyond.
The board has endorsed an Expression of Interest process to engage and assess potential partnership opportunities throughout the year. It has also started investing strongly in building the networks essential for informing potential partnership opportunities and assessing applications. We recognise that working collaboratively will enable us to deliver higher levels of investment, inclusion and impact across the entire growth corridor of the city of Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast
Council, and Noosa Council. We will ensure our vision remains in the long term for 2032 and beyond.
Under this approach, we’re looking to amplify and, where possible, accelerate quality region-led initiatives that align with our vision statement and drive positive economic development outcomes for our region.
WE’RE EAGER TO SUPPORT INITIATIVES THAT:
Show momentum: the partner organisation or project has a proven track record, credibility and traction. Focus on economic opportunities: projects that create pathways for new business leads, partnerships, investors, customers and increased participation.
Our region is substantially outstripping the growth projections developed in 2017 upon which many local, state and federal government investments are based, as it is currently the highest inward migration area in Australia, with the latest data showing nearly one in five house relocations are to this region. So, all government budgets must be assessed against the most recent data to ensure an allocation of funding is made to meet the pressing development needs of this rapidly expanding community, or we will continue to see low levels of government investment per capita that have been prevalent in this region for at least the past two decades.
Amplify reach and impact: initiatives that we can help take to the next level, reaching a broader audience or advancing to the next stage of development.
Align with our vision: projects that contribute toward our vision for regional development with measurable outcomes and impact.
Therefore, we are investing in data analysis and insight reports to inform this region’s public policy and program development. u
The approach to Christmas and the summer holiday season is often a chaotic time for businesses. And that’s how we like it: busy, working at peak flow, customers wanting your goods and services, meeting deadlines, celebrating to do and downtime on the horizon.
We wish you all of this and more.
Let us help you raise social awareness. Our Welcome events, which occur regularly throughout the year, benefit new members by creating conversations and connections that lead to social media mentions.
We’re excited to wrap up the year in several ways.
We’re launching a new evening networking event! This year, it doubles as a Christmas celebration for the local business community. Please join us at VineWine Bar in Sippy Downs on November 21, at 5:30 pm and check our Facebook page for future ones.
Our second annual Christmas Gift Collection for children’s charities will kick off then. Gifting is a very joyful thing for the giver and the receiver. Let’s make this year’s collection bigger and better for Sunshine Coast families in need.

efore we know it, the colours of Christmas will be coming our way! It is such a busy time of year that we can get caught up in our own admin demands and miss the opportunity to share in the festive joy and shine!
Late November sees the return of Sculpture on the Edge, a major arts event run by Arts Connect at Flaxton Gardens. Our aim is to enable local businesses to gain valuable leverage from this outstanding event in the lead-up to Christmas.
Our monthly Coffee and Social events allow us to come together and plan exciting ways to encourage our community to shop locally and add sparkle to holiday fun and festivities. We’re launching our Christmas Season of JOY on November 14 at Kondalilla Restaurant.
Our Arts and Events Committee is organising a twilight Christmas Market for December 7, a perfect family event.
This year, our Village Green will glow each night and our magnificent Christmas Tree will shine from December 7. Businesses will be encouraged to add some seasonal sparkle with prizes for the best-dressed businesses, which will be generously sponsored by Cr Winston Johnston.
The MCOC is committed to informing members of important issues and raising awareness of opportunities throughout the year.
There’s a common belief that you must choose between building a successful career and starting a family.
But at the Sunshine Coast Young Chamber of Commerce, we’re here to challenge that narrative. We see our members, young professionals passionately pursuing their career goals while raising families, as living proof that it’s possible to do both. It’s not always easy, but balancing both worlds can be a reality with the right support and a community that understands.
We know the struggle is real: juggling meetings and school drop-offs, late-night work deadlines and morning routines, finding time for client calls and family dinners. The balancing act is tricky, and the pressure to be ‘all in’ on your career can sometimes make the family feel like it’s competing for your attention. But it doesn’t have to be a trade-off.
We’re committed to creating a community where young professionals can thrive in their careers and personal lives. We know that our members want more than just traditional networking opportunities. They’re looking for a space that respects their professional ambitions and their roles as parents, partners and family members.
To support this, we’re actively working to offer family-friendly events that take the pressure off choosing between business and family time. By organising events that bring together professional growth and family fun, we’re building a network where young professionals don’t have to pick between the boardroom and the playground. Our goal is to show that having a career and a family aren’t mutually exclusive but can, in fact, enrich each other.
We’re proud to support our members as they navigate these overlapping worlds. When young professionals have the support they need to succeed at work and home, it strengthens their families and our entire business community. That’s the future we envision for the Sunshine Coast: a place where young professionals can build fulfilling careers without sacrificing what matters most. We’re creating a community that champions balance and celebrates the idea that young professionals don’t have to choose — they can indeed have it all. u

THE POWER OF CONNECTION: BNI on the Sunshine Coast
BY LEANNE ZECCHINATI
I joined BNI for the business opportunities, but I stayed for the friendships, building my business network and personal and business education. After 17 years, BNI still accounts for over 25 per cent of new business each year. This year, I received the remarkable achievement of becoming a Million Dollar Giver!”
I joined BNI just a few months after launching the business 18 years ago, and it has been our primary marketing strategy ever since. The invaluable connections, friendships and knowledge from BNI have been transformative. Referrals still contribute to over 50% of our annual revenue, but it’s the trusted network and ideasharing that truly make BNI special.”
Connection and family-like relationships play a crucial role in our Sunshine Coast community. For nearly 40 years, Business Network International (BNI) has been central to helping local entrepreneurs grow through meaningful connections and referrals.
Founded in 1985, BNI is the world’s largest business networking organisation. It operates on the principle of ‘Givers Gain’, which highlights the power of giving referrals and receiving them in return. BNI’s mission is simple: to help members grow their businesses through long-term relationships and quality referrals in a supportive, structured environment.
With over 328,000 members in 77 countries, BNI’s global reach is impressive, yet it retains a strong local focus, making every member feel part of a welcoming family of business owners. Over the past year alone, members generated $33.73 billion in business worldwide through 14.2 million referrals.
As BNI approaches its 40th anniversary, the value of long-term membership is clear. Members benefit from referrals and gain a sense of community, celebrating successes and fostering each other’s growth. For those seeking to elevate their networking and connect with a supportive group of professionals, visiting a local BNI chapter is an opportunity worth exploring. Together, we can create connections that support both business success and personal growth here on the Sunshine Coast. u
I was invited to a BNI breakfast in Durban, South Africa and little did I know how life-changing it would be. That group became my business associates, friends and family. After relocating to Australia, I quickly sought a BNI chapter on the Sunshine Coast and found my new family in BNI Platinum. It was a no-brainer.”
I started my BNI journey in Sydney in 2006, seeking referral partners and industry professionals to support my business growth with their expertise. I gained much more— presentation skills, leadership opportunities and invaluable connections. Seventeen years on, I’m still learning new ways to connect and passing on lessons learned to new members.”
A PROUD MILESTONE IN MY BNI BUSINESS JOURNEY
When I started Foreshore Garden Services, I built my client base by cold-calling property managers and estate agents. Carolyn from Luxe Property Managers answered one of those calls, and in mid-November, she invited me to visit BNI Focus—Peregian Springs. Initially sceptical, I attended the meeting and walked away with two new jobs. Realising BNI’s potential, I reached out to another BNI gardener, Jack from Mountain View Mowing, and visited his chapter, BNI Alliance— Buderim. Watching referrals and, “thank you for closed business,” acknowledgments being exchanged, I became convinced. When I returned to BNI Focus, I felt like the hottest property in the room. Many members were keen to refer my services, and I left with five new jobs that day. Inspired, I submitted my application to join BNI. Our group was in
the launch phase, so it was all hands on deck to establish ourselves as a new chapter. As more people attended and referrals grew, our chapter saw increased success, culminating in our official launch in May. In a short time, I’ve received twelve times my investment—more success than any other marketing strategy.
The financial gains are significant, but equally important is the network of people I can now rely on professionally and personally. Leanne Zecchinati, our Area Director, was always available to answer questions and helped me brainstorm solutions to early business challenges. Through Leanne, I met my first employee, her son Jay. After a serious motorbike accident, Jay was struggling to find work. The accident left him with injuries that took months to heal, leaving him uncertain about his future. But with some training and
support, he joined our team and has grown into a confident young man with a renewed sense of purpose—a proud milestone in my business journey.
In July 2024, I restructured as Foreshore Property Services Pty Ltd, and we’re now a team of four (soon to be five) with three company vehicles. I’m spending less time on the tools, freeing me to travel and seek new opportunities. Now, as Launch Ambassador for BNI Online, I look forward to a bright and exciting future.

GROWING A TRUSTED BNI REFERRAL NETWORK
Before joining BNI, building a reliable network felt daunting. As a business owner, I was familiar with the hustle of attending networking events and handing out business cards, but these rarely translated into meaningful connections or solid referrals. It wasn’t until I joined my local BNI-Aura chapter that I truly realised the value of a structured, committed network.
BNI introduced me to a room of likeminded professionals, all eager to grow their businesses through genuine referrals. Unlike casual networking events, BNI operates on the principle of ‘Givers Gain’, meaning the more you help others, the more your business grows in return. Within just a few months, my network had expanded significantly. I no longer relied on Jim’s Group leads or chance meetings. Instead, I received warm referrals from trusted members who had already established relationships with their contacts. This trust-based system meant each lead was
more qualified, leading to higher conversion rates and stronger client relationships.
The most profound change, however, was the sense of trust and collaboration that BNI fosters. Every referral is given with confidence, knowing that the person you recommend will deliver quality service. Over time, I became the go-to person in my chapter for building
inspections, which helped build credibility and trust in my business.
The financial impact has been undeniable. With BNI, my business has seen consistent growth, not just in the number of referrals but in the quality of clients. More importantly, I’ve gained a supportive community of professionals who are genuinely invested in my success.
Looking back, joining BNI-Aura was one of the best decisions I made for my business. It transformed how I approach networking, leading to stronger connections, profitable relationships and a thriving business.

Community marketing: strategy of choice for small businesses
any start-ups and small businesses face a similar challenge— how do you gain visibility and build meaningful connections without the deep pockets of larger competitors? Community marketing offers an answer. This approach isn’t just about getting your name on a website; it’s about becoming part of a network of likeminded professionals who support each other’s growth and success.
Community marketing allows businesses to join forces with others in their industry to create powerful, collective campaigns that draw attention to their services. Platforms like Buy Local Sunshine Coast, Healthii Hub and Locals in the Loop provide more than just a promotional space—they are hubs where members can connect, share referrals and build partnerships. By collaborating with
others in the community, small businesses can achieve far greater visibility than they would on their own.
This strategy is particularly effective for small business owners who want to tap into local networks. Instead of operating in isolation, you become part of a proactive community invested in mutual success. The benefits are twofold: you gain the trust and support of fellow business owners, and you access new customer bases through shared marketing efforts.
Community marketing also allows businesses to pool their resources. By investing a little individually, members can contribute to larger campaigns that spotlight everyone in the group. Whether it’s a social media blitz, an email campaign or a local event, the combined effort brings more attention to each member’s services than they could achieve alone.
Ultimately, community marketing goes beyond mere engagement; it’s about building lasting relationships, creating referral opportunities and driving real growth. If you want to connect with others in your field, boost your business, and contribute to your community, joining a network like Buy Local Sunshine Coast could be the ideal strategy.
Ready to grow your business through community? Take the first step by joining a local network today.

No chlorine, no nasties, just water Cooee Water
Cooee! That’s the sound of us calling out to you, just like you’d call out to a mate for a good old chat. We’re the team behind Cooee Water, and we’ve been in the water game since 2002. The Cooee Water story started when our family expanded and we welcomed a little one into the world. Like many parents, we wanted the best for her. We quickly realised that meant filtered water— no chlorine, no nasties, just pure hydration.
When Larnie and Steve were working in the industry for the big water companies, they realised what was missing: the personal care factor. Whether it was for the family to have clean, safe water or for businesses to provide healthy, chilled and boiling water for the staff, they forgot about people! That is why Cooee Water was started. We brought back customer care, service and the ability to communicate with a team that cares and is working to give you what you need: clean water to keep
you hydrated at home and work. Come on in and meet our team. The favourite is ZIG the dog, but don’t tell the rest of the team about it. Chelsea and Steve can help you with whatever you need for the home and family, whether it is town or tank water.
Larnie and the sales team can help you with the workplace, office, school or factory. Systems start at as little as $10 a week, so there is no reason not to enjoy clean, healthy chlorine- and chemical-free water.
There is no waiting in endless queues; if you’re thirsty for clean filtered water, come see us. Let’s keep your family and workmates hydrated the right way.

Understanding gigabit internet in Australia with Click Access
As Australia continues its digital transformation, the demand for faster, high-capacity internet is skyrocketing. In response, NBN Co has accelerated its rollout plans, with new “hyperfast” broadband products—including a multigigabit download speed of 2Gbps—expected to launch by September 2025. This multibillion-dollar fibre upgrade program aims to boost Australia’s digital capabilities, paving the way for faster connections and smoother online experiences for homes and businesses.
Australians consume more data than ever before. Today’s households and workplaces are packed with devices—smart TVs, video conferencing setups and even voiceactivated assistants—constantly competing for bandwidth. Faster, higher-capacity broadband supports more high-definition video streaming, seamless video calls and smoother, lower-latency gaming, particularly when multiple devices are connected
simultaneously. As more of our daily activities rely on stable, high-speed internet, having a connection that can handle these demands has become more important than ever.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Gigabit internet and the upcoming multi-gigabit speeds offer a new level of connectivity for both homes and businesses. For households, this means uninterrupted movie nights, reliable smart home controls and the capacity to support a busy family using a multitude of devices simultaneously. It’s the freedom to stream, work and connect effortlessly, no matter how many devices are on the network.
For businesses, it’s about staying productive
and competitive: large file uploads, real-time collaboration and cloud-based applications will run faster and more efficiently. Enhanced connectivity means less time waiting and more time spent getting things done.
However, the real advantage lies in choosing a provider that understands your needs and is genuinely available to help. As a local business based on the Sunshine Coast, servicing customers throughout Australia, Click Access not only delivers your services but also provides friendly, personalised support that’s only a phone call away. We believe our customers should feel valued and supported—whether you’re a local business or based anywhere across Australia, you’ll always have a partner dedicated to keeping you connected.
The future of connectivity is here and we’re ready to help you embrace it.

Taking our thriving local businesses to the next level
The Sunshine Coast is where innovation and new businesses thrive. You can almost feel the palpitations in the air, humming with the vibration of activity and growth. Our region attracts people with an entrepreneurial mindset, vision and drive—how exciting is that? Until it isn’t. Until the constraints of running a small business start to feel like shackles, it all becomes a bit hard, and the exit looks inviting…
We don’t want to see all that brilliant energy fading; we want the exciting businesses that come to the Coast to survive and thrive, not start the nosedive.
There seems to be a tremendous amount of support for the startup community—but what about when it gets tricky when scaling is imminent? What then? What about when you need to make big decisions, but you’ve never made decisions like that before in your life and navigating it seems daunting and scary (sometimes you’re doing it alone as the CEO of this empire you have created)? What about when you have leadership or team issues, and throwing new people at it causes more problems… What then?
That’s where Next Level comes in. With 20 years of commercial experience, 18 of which were spent owning her own marketing
consultancy and a business advisory service, Angie Hammond has brought a new concept to the Coast, and she has 16 fabulous advisors by her side, too.
Next Level is for scaling companies ready to take the next step. It’s for companies that admit they might not have all the answers, are ready to ask for help and strategically carve a new pathway forward towards growth.
With a range of services encompassing educational workshops and masterclasses, advisory board-style meetings and mentoring, this program is a complete support mechanism for your growing business.
Our advisory board meetings give you access to our panel of over 16 advisors (our brains trust)—you choose which advisor you need each quarter. Each business receives monthly mentoring.
The program helps you learn, make good decisions and be supported throughout the process. You will be held accountable for the plans made during the meetings so you reach your goals. It’s not a nice chat, then, crickets—we all have a genuine interest in helping your business thrive, so join us on the journey to the next level.

A different type of law firm: Good Law
Good Law QLD opened in the Aura community in July 2024, offering services in conveyancing and property law, planning and environment law, wills and estates. The firm’s principal, Sian McNamara, wanted to create a different type of law firm.
“Typically, law firms are very triangulated structures. I wanted to flatten that structure so that staff were remunerated for hard work, growth and development. I believe this would naturally create a safe space for staff and clients,” Sian states.
The approach is clearly working with the firm growing from three staff in July 2024 to seven now, with another member to join in November 2024, all without ever advertising a position. Marketing also hasn’t been prioritised, with clients being referred organically because of the client-centric focus the firm adopts.
“We recognise that every client’s situation is stressful and unique, no matter the circumstances. We treat our clients the way we would want to be treated. As a result, we have a rapidly growing referral base and, thus, a rapidly growing organisation,” Sian says.
