Dear Matters Magazine Readers,
The theme of this issue of Matters Magazine is sustainability, a term derived from the Latin word sustinere. The definitions of sustainability vary depending on the source: the Oxford English Dictionary describes it as the capacity to be upheld or defended as valid, correct, or true. Dictionary.com focuses on the environmental aspect, emphasising the importance of not being harmful and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance. The American Merriam-Webster dictionary simply defines it as the ability to be sustained.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sustainability is about being able to continue over a period of time. This definition resonates deeply with me as it spans all aspects of life and business. It calls on us to bear the weight of our decisions with grace and responsibility, to recognise the interconnectedness of life, and to strive to uphold what is true in our interactions with each other and the world.
But what does sustainability look like in practice? How do we embody this principle in our daily actions, both personal and professional?
Sustainability involves making eco-friendly choices and creating businesses that consider their long-term impact on society and the environment. It also means building relationships based on honesty and integrity and making decisions that consider the wellbeing of our families, communities, businesses, and humanity. On a personal note, I can honestly say that over the last few months, I could not have sustained myself without the support, trust, and love of my family, friends, and business partner.
We explore all these dimensions of sustainability. Our cover story on Bhavna Megh delves into integrating transformational change as a means to sustain; Adam Cursio shares his insights on balancing family, business, and personal passions to create sustainable joy; and Elvis and Bianca Pereira discuss their philosophy on developing lasting relationships with clients and within their team, which they believe will enable Lauxen Cleaning Solutions to continue over time.
“SUSTAINABILITY IS ABOUT BEING ABLE TO CONTINUE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, A DEFINITION THAT RESONATES DEEPLY WITH ME AS IT SPANS ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE AND BUSINESS.”
We also feature the personal journeys of individuals who prioritise longterm welfare over short-term gains, showcasing how sustainable practices can fundamentally shape lives and businesses alike.
As you turn these pages, I invite you to reflect on the sustainability of your own actions. Are they genuinely sustainable or merely superficial measures? How can you integrate true sustainability into your life and business?
Thank you for supporting Matters Magazine in our quest for sustainability. May this issue inspire deeper reflection on what sustainability really means and how it can be authentically practised in every facet of your existence.

Integration: Bhavna Megh’s key to sustainable change
BY SHARI HALL
Bhavna Megh, owner of Stepping Into You, was born and raised in London. Her parents moved from India to London for better opportunities, and her early years were spent in a household filled with relatives. “We lived with my uncle’s family, and at times there were twelve of us in one house,” Bhavna recalls.
As a teenager and young adult though, Bhavna faced numerous challenges. At the age of 14, Bhavna’s younger brother was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Although he initially recovered, the tumour returned aggressively, and he passed away just after his 18th birthday.
This profound loss deeply affected Bhavna and her family. “I remember being in shock, feeling nothing. It wasn’t until the funeral that I fully broke down,” she shares. Various health issues also plagued Bhavna during this difficult time, and it was then she expanded her journey into energy healing in an effort to begin healing herself.
“Studying neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotherapy added a deeper layer of understanding to how I was living. It shifted me a lot, allowing me to create deeper, below-the-surface changes,” she explains.
When Bhavna moved to Australia at the age of 30, she excelled in a career in corporate training and development. She discovered a passion for helping people grow and develop their potential. “My career in training and development was unexpected. I trained in marketing and advertising, but I found my calling in helping people grow and be better in themselves,” she says. Answering the call, she formed Stepping Into You.
INTEGRATION IS THE KEY
Moving permanently into the role of helping others transform lives, one important thing Bhavna discovered was the challenge people have in sustaining change for a lifetime. She observed people falling back into their old selves and habits, leading them to repeatedly seek the same breakthroughs in retreat after retreat, coaching program after coaching program, investing thousands into chronic self-transformation. “It’s about integrating the change, so you don’t need to keep going back,”
she explains. But how do you truly integrate the learning and tools back into your life after an intensive retreat or workshop?
Integration is about taking small, manageable steps rather than overwhelming oneself with the entirety of the change all at once. Bhavna explains, “Big goals require little steps. Start with the small steps towards the life you wish to create. Make them so small that they are super easy to accomplish. The key here is to create momentum.”
CREATING MOMENTUM
Momentum is crucial. Once the train starts moving, it becomes easier to keep it going. By starting with changes that are simple and easily achievable, you build confidence and establish a foundation for taking larger steps later.
upgrading the “software” of the mind, akin to updating a phone's operating system. She focuses on hardwiring new subconscious beliefs that align with the desired life and clearing stress that blocks this life from manifesting. This upgrade in subconscious beliefs can positively impact various aspects of life, including relationships, business, health, self-esteem, prosperity, and spirituality.
ACTIVATION STEPS
“BIG GOALS REQUIRE LITTLE STEPS. START WITH THE SMALL STEPS TOWARDS THE LIFE YOU WISH TO CREATE.”
“Watch out for reality,” she warns. Returning to everyday life after a transformative experience can be challenging. The familiar environment, routines, and interactions can quickly pull you back into old habits and thought patterns. It’s important to raise your awareness during this period. “Notice how you show up the same and how you show up differently. When you notice the same, choose whether you want to change or continue this state and take little steps to create this.”
Bhavna's unique approach involves
To facilitate integration, Bhavna introduces what she calls “Activation Steps.” These small, actionable steps align with the new beliefs and changes one wishes to embody. She illustrates this with the story of a client, a successful business owner who was constantly stressed about her business forecasts. Bhavna helped her release this stress and instilled new beliefs about her business and herself. The client’s Activation Step was to review her forecast only once the following week. She easily and comfortably went an entire month without looking. This small step brought significant relief and allowed her to focus on more productive activities.
Bhavna also works on releasing physical and emotional stress stored in the body. She believes that transformation involves the mind and addressing the physical manifestations of stress and emotional blocks.
THE 5 FOUNDATION STATES
Bhavna’s approach to transformation is anchored in what she calls the Five Foundation States. “We can transform states of fear, anxiety, or sadness into states of peace, non-attachment, love, wisdom, and grace,” she explains. These foundational states provide a stable base for sustainable change.
Her understanding and approach to transformation are deeply rooted in her own personal journey–her family's immigrant experience, her brother’s tragic death, and her own health challenges. These experiences have instilled in her a deep understanding of the importance of integrating changes into daily life to achieve sustainable transformation. Her personal experiences have uniquely positioned her to guide others on their paths to transformation. “I want people to step into their own power, their own greatness. I offer a space for them to be in that and support them with the mindset and beliefs aligned with the life they desire to create,” Bhavna says. Integration is the key to ensuring that the epiphanies, breakthroughs, and transformations experienced working with her become lasting changes rather than fleeting moments. By focusing on small, manageable steps, raising awareness of old and new patterns, and continuously reinforcing new beliefs, lasting transformation becomes achievable. u

Family, business, and music
A perfect balance for sustainable joy
BY SHARI HALL
PHOTOS BY EMPIRE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
Adam Cursio, Director of Cursio Property Buyers Agents, based in Noosa, Queensland, has cultivated a harmonious life blending family, a real estate career and music. Deeply rooted in his Italian heritage, his journey reflects a commitment to balance and sustainability, ensuring lifelong joy and success.
FAMILY AND MUSIC: THE CEMENT THAT BINDS
Adam’s story begins with his family. Born to Tony and Daniela Cursio, immigrants to Melbourne, Victoria, from southern Italy, Adam’s upbringing was imbued with the rich traditions and values of the Italian culture.
Many parents strive to create a better life for their children. For the Cursios, this meant developing a family business in insurance and financial planning that has sustained itself for over 40 years. Adam was destined for a pre-determined legacy.
His father, Tony, was also a charismatic singer, actor, and performer. His mother, Daniela, is a well respected, retired school teacher.
“I didn’t realise it then, but Dad was a master on stage. He could make a thousand people silent or have them jumping up and down with joy. He was the best salesperson I ever met, a real natural. And Mum, she was a natural born educator who made it impossible to fail,” Adam says.
His parents instilled in Adam a love for music and a strong and disciplined work ethic. So, when Adam picked up the guitar at nine years old, he learned his first guitar solo from ‘Easy’ by Faith No More in one weekend. “I practised until my little fingers bled and it all sounded just right,” he recalls.
Admiring his father’s dedication and connection to the people, Adam also developed a passion for
music that fuelled his determination to, one day, take the stage on his own terms.
This early exposure to performance and lessons learned from his parents would later develop into crucial skills needed in his real estate career, where confidence and communication are key.
REAL ESTATE: CONNECTING TO THE PEOPLE
While music was a significant part of his life, Adam’s professional life began in financial services. Influenced by his father's advice, he pursued a career in financial planning, obtaining his Bachelor of Business at RMIT. He joined the family business, selling life insurance and income protection. “I thought helping people manage their money (and protecting it) would be a fulfilling career,” he says. Yet he could feel it did not resonate with his core values as something was missing.
“It’s like when you’re a kid, and someone says you must wear this, but you really don't want to; they would never be your choice. You don't know how to behave; you don’t know what to say to match your chosen outfit. But, when you dress yourself, you do you; you feel like you and you are 100 per cent yourself. As a financial planner in Melbourne, it was stressful, and I did not really know who I was meant to be. It was somewhat the same as that little frustrated boy in the wrong clothes. I could only advise clients on limited approved financial products when I knew I was dealing with people’s lives and their money, and there was a huge piece of the puzzle missing in my advice.”
His clients talked about their mortgage payments, the high cost of living, and insurance premiums; yet, he couldn’t discuss the cause of these problems with them. What people really needed was guidance in making one of the most significant investments of their lives: buying property. “My vision was bigger than those ASIC limitations; I genuinely wanted to help people to build real wealth.”
“MUSIC AND REAL ESTATE MAY SEEM WORLDS APART, BUT BOTH REQUIRE CREATIVITY, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, PERFORMANCE AND AN ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH PEOPLE – THE HEART OF EVERYTHING WE DO.”
This realisation prompted Adam to transition into real estate. He obtained his real estate license and began working as a project marketer, offering off-plan properties to investors. “I did well, but again, I felt like I was selling products rather than truly helping people,” Adam explains. This dissatisfaction led him to a pivotal decision: to become a buyer’s agent dedicated to representing and supporting buyers.
THE UNIQUE ROLE OF A BUYER’S AGENT
In Australia, the concept of a buyer’s agent is still relatively new. Unlike traditional real estate agents who work for the seller, buyers’ agents advocate for the buyer, providing impartial advice and ensuring their best interests are served.
“I am deeply passionate about buyers getting a good deal and being looked after in the big bad game of real estate, which is primarily dominated by selling agents. Many people don’t realise that when they go to an ‘open for inspection’ or auction, while the real estate agents do a great job of befriending buyers and servicing them, it needs to be understood, respected, and recognised that the reality is that selling agents are working for their sellers. By law, they must represent the sellers with their best interest at heart, getting the highest price on their terms. Buyers typically have nobody helping them and sometimes have no idea that they’re paying $50,000 to $100,000 more than they need to; sometimes they're bidding against themselves at an auction, not even realising nobody else is left to bid.” Adam describes his role as: “levelling the playing field.”
THE NOOSA PROPERTY MARKET: OPPORTUNITIES AND INSIGHTS
With its stunning beaches, high-end retail shops and restaurants, and laid-back lifestyle, Noosa has become a prime location for homebuyers and investors. However, its worldwide popularity also means the market is highly competitive. “The demand for property in Noosa is high, and supply is limited,” Adam notes. “Being based in Noosa, I know the market trends, the neighbourhoods, and what drives property values. We can access off-market properties and negotiate the best terms for our clients,” he explains. This expertise allows him to identify opportunities that others might miss, ensuring his clients get the best possible outcomes.
BUILDING TRUST AND LASTING RELATIONSHIPS
Central to Adam’s success is his ability to build trust and forge lasting relationships with his clients. He believes that honesty, transparency, and integrity are essential. “Trust is earned through consistent actions
and clear communication. I keep my clients informed at every stage of the process,” Adam says.
Adam’s approach is deeply personal. He emphasises the importance of understanding his client's needs and dreams. “Every client has a different story. My job is to listen, understand, and help them find a property that fits their unique situation,” he says. His clients appreciate this knowledgeable yet compassionate approach, often praising his dedication and attention to detail.
ACHIEVING BALANCE: THE KEY TO SUSTAINABLE JOY
Adam’s life is a testament to the balance between familial bonds, professional ambitions, and personal passions. While his career in real estate is flourishing, and he carries on the legacy of the family business, he continues to nurture his love for music. Adam performs at festivals and events, leading his band Siesta Cartel and bringing audiences joy with his music.
“Whether it was business or music, my dad involved us in every aspect of his life. And sometimes I think I’m like a carbon copy of my dad. He was an insurance broker and a financial planner. I was an insurance broker, financial planner, and now a real estate buyer’s agent. Dad sang and performed, and now my band, Siesta Cartel, is singing the same Italian songs my dad taught me, songs we performed for years together on stage.”
“When my family began the Cursio Group, I knew it was meant to be there forever. The conundrum comes when you’ve got a passion inside you that needs to express itself and a desire to be free from the constraints of family tradition. I’ve now learned to balance all that— well, it’s always been the story of my life.”
“Music and real estate may seem worlds apart, but both require creativity, attention to detail, performance and an ability to connect with people. My parents taught me all that,” Adam reflects.
Balance within his heart and soul enriches Adam’s life and enhances his work as a buyer’s agent. “Playing music allows me to connect with people on a different level. It’s a reminder that at the heart of everything we do, it’s all about relationships and human connection,” he says.
Adam Cursio’s journey from his family’s musical roots to becoming a respected buyer’s agent in Noosa is a story of passion, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. His unique blend of personal and professional experiences makes him a trusted partner for anyone navigating the real estate market. By creating balance in his life through his business, family, and musical passions, Adam has achieved sustainable joy, inspiring us all. u

BEYOND MOPS AND BUCKETS REDEFINING COMMERCIAL CLEANING WITH LAUXEN CLEANING SOLUTIONS
BY SHARI HALL
PHOTOS BY JAY GODFREY, IMPAKT MEDIA
Bianca and Elvis Pereira are redefining the commercial cleaning industry through their family-owned business, Lauxen Cleaning Solutions. With a unique approach to client relations and a commitment to excellence, it’s easy to understand how their passion and principles drive their sustained success.
The Pereiras, both originally from Brazil, started Lauxen Cleaning Solutions four-and-a-half years ago after moving from the Gold Coast to Noosa for a better environment in which to raise their son, Noah. “My wife had been a cleaner for seven years, working alone,” Elvis recalls. With experience in building businesses, he recognised the potential in the cleaning industry and the importance of maintaining strong core values. “I saw a massive opportunity to help her build the business."
FROM BAD EXPERIENCES TO BUILDING TRUST
Many of Lauxen’s clients come to them after bad experiences with previous cleaning services. “Most of our clients, such as restaurants, surf clubs, schools, shopping centres, and medical facilities, have had issues with cleaners who didn’t show up or didn’t do a good job. Trust
is critical, especially when cleaners have security codes and keys to the business premises,” Elvis explains. “It’s important to us that our clients feel comfortable and safe with our team; that’s why staff members are pre-qualified, police-checked, and fully insured to bring peace of mind to our clients.”
“We focus on creating an easy flow of communication between our company and the clients. Any complaint or issue is resolved immediately,” he says. This commitment to prompt and effective communication sets Lauxen apart from larger companies, where clients often struggle with slow and impersonal responses.
“We don’t focus on numbers. We’re growing slowly to keep the company's core values intact while refining the services we offer and the clients we work with,” he states. This careful approach has allowed Lauxen to expand the number and types of businesses they serve while simultaneously maintaining their personal touch. Their slogan, “We don’t cut corners. We clean them,” highlights their commitment to excellence, offering no lock-in contracts, regular site inspections, and a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee policy.
From left to right: Diego, Bianca, Elvis, Gustavo, Mari and Tiago
OUR TEAM IS OUR FAMILY
Elvis emphasises the importance of team cohesion and mutual support. “We have 14 cleaners on our team, and we’re all friends. We discuss business around barbecues and in restaurants, always looking for ways to improve and serve our clients better,” he shares. This camaraderie is crucial to their success and reflects the company’s values.
“Our team has become our family, and our personal wellbeing is our priority. One of our biggest clients was delivering feedback in a way that was detrimental to our team’s morale. We had to educate them on better communication and respect for our cleaners,” he recalls. This experience highlighted the importance of compassionate feedback, which Elvis deeply believes in.
“We always try to check-in on our team, ensuring they are happy with their work and the clients they serve. Sometimes, it’s about educating clients to maintain respect and understanding,” he says. This approach fosters a positive work environment and strengthens the bonds between the team and clients.
EXPANDING AND GIVING BACK
Lauxen recently expanded into window cleaning, leveraging its expertise in handling large commercial venues. “We had to acquire the skills to deal with windows at heights, so we formed a team dedicated to window cleaning. It’s been a great success,” Elvis says. Despite this expansion, the core of the business remains commercial cleaning, where its reputation continues to grow.
Lauxen also gives back to the community by serving churches and other non-profit organisations, often without profit. “We are truly grateful for where our company is today and find ways to give back to the community. It’s not just about money; it’s about connection and service,” Elvis asserts.
LOOKING AHEAD WITH PURPOSE
For Elvis and Bianca, the future of Lauxen Cleaning Solutions is bright and driven by a purpose beyond profit. “We are more than just cleaners with buckets and mops. We are about connection and delivering the best work possible, with love. We aim to help our clients present a clean and inviting space that reflects their values and priorities,” Elvis says. “A clean space not only enhances the business’s presentation but also elevates the morale of the team working there. It delivers a very clear image of your company to the world. It delivers a message that you actually care.”
Elvis’s story is a testament to the power of family, community, and a commitment to excellence. “I truly believe that my company is here not just to make money but to help your company acquire more clients, get better reviews, and offer an improved customer experience. I believe our company is here to help our clients way beyond just the cleaning we do.” u
PEOPLE
Be conscious of your lifestyle and how your home fits into it.
PLANET
Live in harmony with the land, respecting and preserving the natural environment.
PROPERTY
Find the perfect balance between a sustainable lifestyle and a beautiful, functional home.
KenLea Estate:
Sustainable living for people, planet and property
In the heart of Woombye, Queensland, KenLea Estate is redefining sustainable living. Led by Kira Steinhaus of MyHaus Property Group, this eco-positive community balances people, planet, and property, creating a legacy of sustainable living that honours the land and fosters a healthy, secure lifestyle for its residents.
KenLea Estate begins with a deep respect for the land. “You have to start with the land and how it fits into the natural environment,” Kira says. This approach ensures that each development respects and enhances its surroundings. By using the existing earth, minimising disruption, and working with the land in the civil works, KenLea Estate ensures the design creates a balanced outcome. “Development is inevitable, but we strive to touch the ground as lightly as possible,” she adds. This philosophy is at the heart of creating a community that lives in harmony with nature.
When designing homes, Kira emphasises the importance of lifestyle and personal preferences. Factors such as family size, the desired footprint of the home, and the positioning of the house on the land are all critical considerations.
At KenLea Estate, the intention is to educate our community in maximising the efficiency of the home and utilising better choice, more sustainable materials in the construction. Simple changes result in a healthier lifestyle and a better quality product. “People need to match their personality and what they would like in their home with the particular block and its orientation,” Kira advises.
Sustainability is at the core of KenLea Estate’s development philosophy. This includes preserving natural flora and fauna, adhering to planning guidelines, and incorporating environmentally friendly materials and techniques.
The development touches a natural corridor at the bottom of the estate, which has been carefully integrated into the design. Recycled materials are used where possible in the overall construction of the estate.
KenLea Estate sets a new standard for residential living on the Sunshine Coast. By focusing on eco-conscious values, the community prioritises sustainability and quality of life. Through careful consideration of local limitations and innovative problem-solving, a simple farmland has been transformed into a vibrant, sustainable neighbourhood that goes beyond just housing.
KenLea Estate is designed for those who appreciate the balance of sustainability and quality. The ideal residents include downsizers from larger properties, individuals who value quality architecture, and trendsetters who want to be part of a forward-thinking community.
They are not just looking for a house; they are looking for a home that aligns with their values and lifestyle. “It’s about finding the perfect balance of respecting the land and creating a property that meets the needs of its inhabitants,” Kira says.
Kira encourages everyone, regardless of where they currently live, to embrace sustainable practices. “Even if they are not buying land from us, they can still do something to make their existing residence more sustainable” she says.
KenLea Estate represents a forward-thinking approach to property development, where people, planet, and property come together in perfect harmony. By understanding and respecting the land, designing homes that fit the lifestyle of their inhabitants, and committing to sustainable practices, MyHaus Property Group is creating a legacy for future generations.

Ocean Orchards: PIONEERING CARBONNEGATIVE SOLUTIONS WITH
MICROALGAE
Ocean Orchards, a forward-thinking enterprise based on the Sunshine Coast, has developed an innovative solution to combat climate change using microalgae. Their unique approach converts CO2 from the atmosphere into carbon-negative concrete, differentiating itself from existing methods that depend on industrial waste and high energy consumption.
What truly distinguishes Ocean Orchards is its local, sustainable use of microalgae, a natural carbon capturer transformed into a valuable building material. This ecofriendly technology not only combats climate change but also aligns with our community’s profound affinity for nature. By operating in harmony with the environment, Ocean Orchards presents a homegrown solution to a global issue.
The inspiration behind this innovation traces back to the University of Queensland's microalgae labs, where the team discovered microalgae's potential in reducing atmospheric carbon. Through extensive research and development, they realised the broader capabilities of microalgae beyond just dietary applications, leading to the creation of carbon-negative concrete.
Ocean Orchards invites the local community to champion its cause by purchasing its products. These will soon include a food-grade skincare line and sculptures crafted from carbon-negative concrete. These unique offerings will showcase designs by local Kabi Kabi artists.

We
asked five experts to answer the following question:
“What does sustainability mean for you and your business?”
And here’s what they have to say!
The Accountable Boardroom
Chris Beard
MASTER YOUR FINANCIALS
“Sustainability in business means having a deep understanding of your financials and making strategic decisions based on that knowledge. Too many business owners think more sales or increased marketing is the answer when finances are tight. This approach can worsen the situation if you don’t have a handle on your numbers. We champion financial clarity as the cornerstone of sustainability. Optimising your numbers is often better than chasing sales; it strengthens your bottom line without additional costs. Master your financials. Make smarter, more sustainable decisions. Forget the quick fixes; build a business that endures with financial insight.”
Sustainable Goals Academy Megyn Carpenter
SUSTAINABILITY IS LONGEVITY
“Sustainability is longevity. It can be the longevity of a business or the longevity of our Earth. Pushing things to the limit is not sustainable. As business owners, we need to look after ourselves and our capacity to be our best selves; we must also look after Mother Earth and her capacity to sustain us. Pushing her to the limits is not sustainable. Once you understand the science behind climate change, you will want to do what you can to be sustainable and protect our lifestyle. I truly believe that business can lead the way with climate action.”
Abbaco Accounting and Advisory Dante Garcia
TODAY’S DECISIONS IMPACT FUTURE GENERATIONS
“To us, sustainability means adopting practices that ensure longterm economic, environmental, and social wellbeing. It’s about making decisions that benefit our business and clients now, while preserving resources for future generations. We focus on efficiency, ethical practices, and innovation to help small businesses thrive and minimise their environmental impact. This commitment reflects our core values of integrity, responsibility, and community support, creating lasting value for our clients and society.”
PARTNERS IN OUR CLIENTS’ SUCCESS
“At Lauxen Cleaning Solutions, sustainability means more than longevity; it embodies our commitment to being integral partners in our clients' success. We go beyond traditional cleaning by enhancing the business atmosphere, directly contributing to superior customer experiences and positive reviews. Anchored in our core values of family, high standards, and pride in our work. By focusing on these aspects, we not only aim to stay in business for a long time but also to ensure that our clients thrive alongside us.”
PROGRESSIVE PERSONAL LEADERSHIP CULTURE
“Every human being is a natural-born leader. We all have one thing we were born to do. This is the thing we are better at doing than anyone else. It’s the thing we would love to do all day, every day, and if we did that, then we’d lead in that area. Others would seek us out to get the value we have to give. This is what we are passionate about. It’s your calling that’s at the core of your character. Business owners who make progressive personal leadership learning part of their lifestyle uncover their passion, which is the fuel that transports their lives into the life they genuinely want to live. What do you genuinely want?”

Transform your LinkedIn networking tree with this free tool
Hello, I’m Luke Hawley, and today, I want to share how LinkedIn, combined with the B2B Sunshine Coast Chrome extension, can revolutionise your networking efforts. Strategic networking is crucial for sustaining business growth. Now, let’s delve into how you can use this innovative tool to manage and enhance your networking on LinkedIn effectively.
WHY LINKEDIN MATTERS
LinkedIn is the go-to platform for professional networking. It offers unparalleled opportunities to connect with industry peers, potential clients, and influential leaders. However, managing and turning these connections into meaningful relationships can be challenging. This is where the B2B Sunshine Coast Chrome extension transforms how you network on LinkedIn.
INTRODUCING THE B2B SC CHROME EXTENSION
The B2B Sunshine Coast Chrome extension is designed to optimise your LinkedIn networking. It provides a structured approach to managing and expanding your professional network. Here’s how you can leverage this tool to enhance your networking and referral efforts:
1. Easy setup and integration: Getting started with the Chrome extension is straightforward. Download it from the Chrome Web Store, add it to your browser, and link it to your LinkedIn profile. This seamless integration lets you access the tool’s features directly from your LinkedIn account.
2. AI-Powered MatchMe feature: The MatchMe feature uses AI to find the best potential connections within the B2B Sunshine Coast network and beyond. It evaluates first and second-degree connections, rating them on a scale of 1-10 for compatibility with your business. This ensures you focus on high-quality, relevant connections.
Example: If you want to connect with business owners and marketing managers, the MatchMe feature will identify and
rate individuals in these roles, helping you prioritise who to connect with.
3. Building trusted connections: The extension allows you to curate a list of trusted connections. These are individuals you feel confident recommending to others. By marking someone as a trusted connection, you can easily refer them when asked for recommendations.
Example: If a colleague asks for a reliable business coach, you can quickly refer a trusted connection from your curated list.
4. Facilitating introductions: One of the standout features is the ability to facilitate introductions. The tool can create a three-way chat on LinkedIn and even announce a new connection. Acting as a connector, this tool helps build your network and strengthen your relationships.
Example: If you know a marketing expert and a business consultant who could benefit from each other’s services, the extension helps you introduce them seamlessly.
5. Detailed insights and personalisation: Gain deeper insights into your connections with the extension’s personality summaries and profile analyses. Use these insights to craft personalised messages and introductions, enhancing your engagement and connection success rate.
Example: Before reaching out to a potential connection, review their personality summary to tailor your introduction message, making it more relevant and engaging.
WHY UPGRADE TO PREMIUM?
While the free version offers robust features, upgrading to the premium version provides additional benefits, such as access to the entire MyMostTrusted network, unlimited searches, and personalised training sessions. Premium members also participate in weekly LinkedIn connection parties and receive oneon-one strategy reviews, ensuring you get the most out of the tool.

Practical steps for business resilience and growth
DANTE GARCIA, Senior Partner
www.abbaco.com.au
As I sit on the verandah of our Sunshine Coast office, I’m reminded of why we chose this stunning location for our boutique accounting firm, Abbaco Accounting & Advisory. Here, small businesses are the heartbeat of our local economy, and sustainability is becoming a key ingredient in our recipe for long-term success. At Abbaco, we believe in the power of sustainability to protect our environment and ensure businesses thrive for generations. When discussing sustainability, it’s easy to think solely about the environment. However, for us at Abbaco, sustainability also means creating business practices that ensure longevity and resilience, efficiency, financial soundness, and durability. On the Sunshine Coast, where the local economy is closely tied to the natural landscape, this approach to sustainability is not just beneficial, it’s essential.
Here are some practical steps to integrate sustainability into your business model:
1. Planning: Sustainable practices often require upfront investment but can lead to significant long-term savings. For example, investing in energy-efficient systems can reduce utility bills, while sustainable sourcing can build stronger supplier relationships and improve product quality.
2. Tax incentives and grants: Numerous government incentives exist for businesses that adopt sustainable practices. From tax deductions on energy-efficient equipment to grants for renewable energy installations, these financial benefits can significantly offset initial costs.
3. Operational efficiency: Streamlining operations to reduce waste and improve efficiency can substantially impact sustainability and profitability. Implementing cloud-based accounting systems, for instance, reduces paper use and improves data accuracy and accessibility.
Taking steps towards sustainability is not just about meeting regulatory requirements
or appeasing eco-conscious consumers. The benefits extend far beyond to cost savings, enhanced reputation, competitive advantage and long-term viability.
Consider including the following as part of your sustainable journey:
1. Conduct a sustainability audit: Assess your current practices and identify areas for improvement. Look at everything from energy use to supply chain management.
2. Set clear goals: Define sustainability for your business and set achievable targets. These could include reducing carbon emissions, switching to renewable energy, or improving waste management practices.
3. Seek expert advice: Work with professionals who provide insights and guidance. At Abbaco, we specialise in helping businesses integrate sustainability into their financial planning and operations.
4. Engage your team: Foster a culture of sustainability within your organisation. Encourage employees to participate in sustainability initiatives and provide training where necessary.
5. Monitor and adjust: Review your progress regularly and be prepared to adjust. Sustainability is an ongoing process; staying flexible is key to adapting to new challenges and opportunities.
At Abbaco Accounting & Advisory, we are proud to support Sunshine Coast businesses in their journey towards sustainability. By taking proactive steps today, we can ensure that our businesses survive and thrive, contributing to a healthier economy and a more sustainable future for our community. Embracing sustainability is a commitment to longevity, resilience, and success—values that are at the heart of every thriving small business on the Sunshine Coast.
Ultimately, sustainability is more than a trend; it’s the foundation for enduring success. Let’s build a brighter, more sustainable future together.
Finding your ‘GP Sweet Spot’ with Chris Beard
I’m Chris Beard. My passion for coaching comes from my personal experience of being 'busy' in my own business and learning from mistakes along the way. So, I built tools, processes, and metrics that I could use to teach as many business owners as I could and set about doing so.
Many business owners have a rough idea of their ideal clients, but their top revenuegenerating clients often don’t contribute significantly to their gross profit. This realisation can be a game-changer. For example, an accountant I coached discovered that her top clients, who generated 80 per cent of her revenue, only contributed one per cent to her gross profit. Shifting her focus resulted in substantial profit increases without extra marketing costs.
LET’S DEFINE THE TERMS
Understanding your financial metrics, particularly your ‘GP Sweet Spot’, can transform your business.
The GP Sweet Spot refers to the optimal gross profit margin a business needs to identify to maximise profitability. It involves analysing financial data to understand which clients or products contribute most to the gross profit, helping businesses make informed decisions to achieve higher profitability without necessarily increasing revenue. Identifying the GP Sweet Spot has consistently doubled the net profits of the businesses I work with, and it can do the same for you.
Gross Profit is calculated as the revenue the business generates minus the cost of goods sold (COGS), including materials and direct labour. It represents the portion of revenue that exceeds these direct costs.
Net Profit is the amount left after all expenses, including overheads like rent, utilities, salaries, and marketing, have been deducted from total revenue. It reflects a business’s overall profitability.
The break-even point is calculated by dividing your monthly overheads by your GP percentage. This straightforward calculation provides invaluable insights into your
business’s financial health.
THE ACCOUNTABLE BOARDROOM
I founded the Accountable Boardroom during the Covid-19 lockdown to help business owners harness the power of accountability and financial acumen to drive success. The Accountable Boardroom has three tiers:
1. The Emerald Program:
This is our foundation. We meet every fortnight in a community format, breaking down each quarter into themes like margins, productivity, marketing, and sales. One critical exercise is finding your GP Sweet Spot.
2. The Emerald Plus:
Building on the Emerald Program, this tier includes one-on-one coaching sessions with me for more personalised guidance.
3. The Black Diamond Group:
This exclusive tier is for businesses meeting specific criteria, such as a minimum annual turnover. We meet face-to-face every six to seven weeks for intensive coaching sessions.
Accountability is the backbone of the Accountable Boardroom. In the Emerald Program, we support each other through a community group, share insights and hold each other accountable. The Emerald Plus tier adds one-on-one coaching for deeper dives into specific issues.
The Accountable Boardroom is more than just a coaching platform; it’s a transformative journey. Whether you join the Emerald Program, the Emerald Plus, or the exclusive Black Diamond group, you’ll gain the tools and knowledge to drive lasting success in your business. I’m here to help you avoid the mistakes I’ve made and achieve the sustainable growth you deserve.

How FDS revolutionised dental practice with risk management and flexibility
CARRIGY, Principal www.foundationdental.com.au
Every business venture begins with a great idea, often something unique and untried, a solution that the market craves. The timing is perfect; the air is filled with energy and enthusiasm. There’s a sense of achievement in being the entrepreneur who has come up with such an insightful proposal. The belief is that success must be assured –both financial and in the reputation of the business. It is very exciting; however, this is only the beginning of the journey.
The challenge is turning one of these great ideas into something tangible while minimising risk and maintaining flexibility. The last thing you want to do is get excited about an idea that may end up bankrupting you or risking your personal relationships and family life.
At Foundation Dental Services (FDS), we took the “road less travelled.” Our fundamental guiding principle was to centralise dental practice support structures for efficiency, such as administration, stores, sterilisation, and training. In turn, this optimised mobility and flexibility in the delivery of specialist clinical services, taking minor surgical procedures, dental implants, oral medicine, and gum care to a broader support base.
ADDRESSING RISK
So, how would risk be addressed? Setting up a dental surgery is often a million-dollar undertaking, let alone setting up multiple clinics to allow the model required for optimal mobility and flexibility. How could this be done with limited investment?
of income with added potential business growth. FDS, in turn, could be very generous with service agreements and staff wages that are well above market. As a result, chair time and staff engagement were only paid for when a patient was 'in the chair’.
In a similar manner, an unused room located in one of the host practices was fitted out as the site for the fledgling central administration support cell. Multiple branches with a broad geographic footprint also significantly reduced business risk.
EXPANSION AND OWNERSHIP
FDS has now been in business for over 25 years based on this structure. Time and again, it has allowed us to navigate through the ups and downs of a turbulent market with minimal disruption to the provision of “excellence in patient care”. Pivoting easily to reposition no matter the challenge: GFC, changing referral paths and demands, or even Covid-19.
A PROVEN MODEL
So, has the model worked? Twenty-five years later, we have our own well-equipped and manned administration centre – supporting 24 of our own clinics spread across five major centres – from the Fraser Coast in the north down through the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to the south. All are owned 100 per cent by FDS.
It has involved a lot of hard work, but with risk always kept manageable, it has also been fun.
Answer: We reduced fiscal risk by finding spare capacity in businesses with an element of synergy. Plenty of general and specialist dental practices exist with empty chair time either after hours or on weekends. They were more than happy to have some of this spare capacity converted into a bonus source
Family life hasn’t suffered—in fact, the opposite has occurred—and it has truly become a family affair, with seven of us now helping grow the concept and expand the service.
In conclusion, a brilliant idea is only the first step. Then comes the hard part—optimising success by minimising risk. Go for it! DR JOHN
Small business seeking finance? Good luck with that!
When a doctor gives a bad diagnosis, you seek a second opinion. But, when banks reject a loan application, small business owners often see it as the end of the road. They don’t realise that while one bank may say “nN”, they are not acting in your best interest by hiding the fact that there are around 35 other lenders who might say “Yes”.
Securing finance for small businesses in Australia is a persistent challenge. Traditional banks have stringent requirements and conservative risk appetites, which make it tough for small businesses to get the funds they need. This can lead to frustration and hinder growth.
Australian banks typically have a risk-averse approach to small business lending. They demand extensive financial documentation, detailed business plans, and proof of profitability, which can be overwhelming, especially for start-ups. There is some truth in the old joke, "I need to prove to the bank that I don’t need the loan before they will give me the loan."
Banks also usually require property as collateral. Many small businesses don’t own property, making them ineligible for loans. Even when businesses do have property, banks often undervalue it, causing more difficulties.
The bureaucratic nature of banks leads to long approval times. This lack of transparency and lengthy process makes it hard for business owners to plan effectively or take timely opportunities. Even when approved, the terms can be harsh, with high interest rates, short repayment periods, and restrictive conditions that strain the business financially.
Specialist brokers like Australian Mortgage Corporation (AMC) can help businesses navigate these challenges. AMC offers tailored financial solutions that meet the unique needs of small businesses. Understanding the intricacies of small business operations, AMC has established relationships with various lenders, including non-bank financial institutions.
AMC assesses a business’s viability beyond just financial statements, considering the business model, market conditions, and growth potential. This approach often results in better loan terms and higher approval rates for small businesses.
AMC streamlines the application process, reducing the bureaucratic burden on business owners. They assist in preparing documentation and researching lenders, ensuring applications have the best chance of approval. AMC’s knowledge of alternative financing options gives small businesses a broader range of funding solutions.
STRAIGHTFORWARD, TRANSPARENT, PERSONALISED SERVICE
Many bank business customers are frustrated by the lack of transparency and alternatives when a loan application is denied. Banks usually say “No” without explaining their decision or offering alternatives.
At AMC, we believe that when a customer application is refused, they deserve to know why and what alternatives are available. This level of respect and transparency builds strong, long-term relationships with clients.
Long-term relationships are vital, especially for business clients. High staff turnover in banks means that business customers often must re-explain their operations to new bank employees every 10 to 11 months; hence, building a long-term relationship with a banker is now virtually impossible.
While obtaining finance for small businesses in Australia remains challenging, AMC offers a viable alternative. By leveraging our expertise and personalised approach, we help small businesses overcome the barriers posed by traditional banks, enabling SMEs to secure the funding needed for growth and success.

Elevate your profile: the power of sustainable leverage with your future book
It’s hip for business owners to add ‘author’ to their list of credentials and with selfpublishing removing all the traditional barriers to entry, it’s easy to see why. As a professional storyteller since 2007 and awardwinning ghostwriter since 2018, I have seen a 200 per cent increase yearly in enquiries from entrepreneurs looking to become authors.
If authorship has been in the back of your mind, let me share a little gem of wisdom with you: those who are the most successful authors think of their books as much more than a product that can be sold for around $30 a pop. Instead, consider it a pillar you can build off to leverage your high-end services or products sustainably, potentially leading to significant financial growth for your business.
My book, The Structured Author, covers this concept in detail, but here is a little to whet your appetite. There are three primary ways you can influence your readers to engage with your products and services:
1 INFLUENCE WITHIN THE PAGES
Instead of thinking about it as ‘selling,’ which is a hard-line stance, think of using your book to maximise the opportunity for your reader to transform and make long-lasting and positive changes to their health, mindset, wellbeing, financial situation, creativity, whatever it may be for you. This can be achieved through seeding, interactive elements, and downloadable content.
2 INFLUENCE OUTSIDE THE PAGES
While everything within the pages is designed to provide a seamless roadmap for your readers to engage further with you, the real magic happens with what you create outside the pages. This is where you can really leverage your book to make a difference to your hip pocket and provide extra value for your readers.
Think about what you can offer your reader that adds value to their life. How can you offer support? What knowledge can you share? Here are some ways to bring your ideas to life and expand on the content of your book to better support your readers who want to become clients: one-on-one or ‘done for you’ service, workshops, mentorships/group programs, speaking, and online communities.
3
INFLUENCE THROUGH OTHER PLATFORMS
If you fail to think about how you will market your book, you are doing a huge disservice to yourself and what you are creating. So, for now, here is a little snippet of things you can start to think about to uncover the marketing potential of your book.
Print, radio, and TV remain among the easiest ways to get your message out to the masses with minimal effort on your part. Remember, ‘media’ is now much more than the traditional trilogy. Also, consider e-zines, magazines, blogs, podcasts, YouTube channels, streaming services, and social platforms.
Being an author is so much more than just selling books. It is about getting out there and showing the world how you can help them with something they need. Remember to view your book as a pillar for your profile and/ or business. When your story inspires people and shows them how you can influence their way of being, they will be more inclined to buy a product or service from you, which leads to income.
Putting your knowledge and experience into a book format could be the thing to catapult your business to the next level! Start reading the Ignite & Write trilogy to get started on your own or join the Ignite & Write Workshop in person or online to get hands-on support with your authorship journey.

Keep lifting your inner game with Praxis Mindset
Most business owners believe they’ll win the game they’ve decided to play. They can see themselves standing on their podium, winning gold for the race they’re running, only to find the journey to gold is never a straight line. It’s often long and lonely with little evidence of success.
The #1 chokehold on the growth of any business is always the leader's psychology and skill. As Tony Robbins wisely said, “80 per cent of success is psychology and 20 per cent is mechanics.”
short not to live it to your full capacity.
“Change is inevitable, but personal growth is a choice,” Bob Proctor says. To become an effective leader in your field, you must start by finding your reason for doing so. What is it you genuinely want to do? Your purpose. The only important question to ask yourself is, ‘What do I want?’”
www.mindsetguide.com.au
My name is Shane O’Donnell, and I specialise in guiding natural-born leaders and business owners through Bob Proctor’s Thinking into Results Personal Leadership System. Everyone can receive gold, but few ever do the training necessary to improve their inner game. Improve your inner game and your outer game, and your results will automatically improve.
You need to train to be a winner in this fast-changing marketplace. You must have the mental tools to challenge yourself and stretch beyond the threshold of beliefs that constrain you. The training always starts with doing the inner work. It’s a process. It’s not rocket science or luck. Thinking into Results gives business owners a system to continually improve their inner game.
I had to lose everything in a dismal business failure in 2005 to wake up to the fact that, although I’d been involved in successful businesses before, I did not have a crystal-clear understanding of the formula for business success. I had to speed things up because I was broke at 35, and we wanted to grow old gracefully here on the Sunshine Coast.
So, I decided how I wanted to live, found a guide (or a mentor), and he led me to the mental tools I needed to get to where we wanted to go, quickly. As a result, my wife and I are now financially independent. All you have to do is learn to access your creative side at the core of your character. Life is way too
We’re teaching natural-born leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs how to connect to their passion and become effective leaders in their field so they can leverage their organisation or business to its full potential in terms of value delivery and the creation of financial success. How do you do that? Well, you start by making it your mission to make progressive personal leadership learning part of your lifestyle. Make it part of your daily routine. The process compounded will shift your paradigm, and your new understanding will transform every part of your life.
“ULTIMATELY, THERE’S ONE INVESTMENT THAT SUPERSEDES ALL OTHERS: INVEST IN YOURSELF. NOBODY CAN TAKE AWAY WHAT YOU’VE GOT IN YOURSELF, AND EVERYBODY HAS POTENTIAL THEY HAVEN’T USED YET.”
— WARREN BUFFETT
Join our Free Monthly Leadership Culture Masterclass at The J Noosa and The Holiday Inn Maroochydore. Each month, I take a deep dive into one of the seven levels of Bob Proctor’s Thinking into Results Leadership System. Strategic networking: building strong, sustainable relationships
On the Sunshine Coast, the old saying, “It’s not what you know, but who you know,” holds a lot of truth. At Imperium Corporate Services, we see firsthand how a strong professional network can make or break success. When approached strategically, networking goes beyond transactions; it nurtures genuine, positive, and sustainable relationships that offer crucial support during challenging times.
Networking is often misunderstood as a means to an end, a quick way to gain immediate benefits. But in reality it’s about creating meaningful connections that form a robust support system. For instance, having a reliable legal advisor within your network can be a lifesaver during a compliance issue, providing swift and informed advice. This network isn’t built overnight; it’s about connecting with people who share your values and business ethics. These like-minded individuals will understand your vision and be more willing to support and collaborate with you.
One key aspect of effective networking is authenticity. When you approach interactions with genuine interest and sincerity, it fosters trust and deeper relationships. People can easily sense disingenuous behaviour, so being authentic is crucial. Additionally, focusing on how you can add value to others rather than what you can gain is a powerful approach. Offering your expertise, sharing valuable insights, and providing support builds goodwill and encourages reciprocity.
Maintaining these relationships requires regular engagement. Meeting someone once and considering them part of your network is not enough. Consistent communication is essential. Unlocking sustainable value: five keys to business success
At LINK Business Brokers, we are passionate about helping clients achieve their business goals. We understand how important sustainability is in making your company more valuable. Boosting your company’s worth is crucial. Potential buyers aren’t just interested in what you have now; they want to see your capacity for sustaining current earnings, future growth potential, and the resilience of your operations.
#1 GROWTH PLAN
Having a clear growth plan is essential. When someone buys your company, they’re investing in its future, not just its current state. A solid growth strategy highlights your potential for expansion, whether through stepping up marketing efforts, reaching out to more clients, or offering new products. It shows buyers that your company is worth investing in.
#2 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Keeping your finances in order is pivotal for boosting your company’s value. By handling your money carefully, you lower the risks for potential buyers and investors. Good financial management signals that your business runs efficiently, which can mean more profits down the line. A steady stream of income that comes in regularly makes your company more sustainable, providing stability in your earnings.
#3
BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS
#4 EMPOWERING YOUR TEAM
Your team is one of your company’s most important assets. They keep day-to-day things running smoothly and ensure an easy transition when ownership changes. Buyers are more interested in businesses with capable management teams that keep things going even after the sale.
#5 MANAGING YOUR REPUTATION
Having a good reputation pays off. A company with a strong brand and positive image keeps customers returning, sustains revenue, and attracts more business. A solid reputation shows that your company is stable and set for long-term growth and profitability.
Focusing on these five pillars can boost your company’s value and set you up for success. Crafting a growth-focused strategy, keeping your finances in check, building diverse relationships, empowering your team, and managing your reputation well can take your company to new heights.
At LINK, ‘We Sell Businesses’ and are here to help you unlock your company’s full potential and make it more valuable in the marketplace.
Get in touch for a no-obligation discussion to unlock your business’s value. Call Ruth on 0405 708 447.
The strength of your business lies in the relationships you build. Having diverse connections with customers, suppliers, and employees makes your company more resilient. A wide network adds value to your business by spreading out your risks and opening up new opportunities. Buyers see this as lower risk and more potential for growth, making your company more attractive.
The sustainable business PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE.
BY RICHARD ELMES
The Sunshine Coast economy thrives on the backbone of small to medium-sized businesses, creating a web of interdependence. For business owners, financial success is often intertwined with personal financial health, extending responsibility to employees, their families, and business partners, including suppliers and contractors. Therefore, having a plan to manage both business and personal cash flow risk is crucial for sustainability and fulfilling a vital role in the local economy.
Armed with a global career in investment banking at Credit Suisse and Morgan Stanley, and project consulting with Macquarie Bank and CBA, I founded Agile Wealth to help people build brighter futures and achieve financial freedom through wealth management. After 30 years in the corporate world, I turned my focus to aiding local business communities as a professional financial advisor. This article discusses key risks to sustainable cash flows and business success.
UNDERSTANDING BUSINESS RISKS
Business risk encompasses issues affecting systems, processes, people, and finances. Staying on top of the evolving factors is crucial. System risks have evolved, with cybersecurity being paramount. Process risks and opportunities are significantly influenced by AI in our rapidly changing world. The economic climate, both globally and locally, also impacts financial risk. Currently, cost of living pressures may affect consumer behaviour and, consequently, your business.
However, our experience shows that people risk—our highest and most disruptive risk—has the greatest impact on business sustainability. Without key people, most businesses cannot function.
PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE.
Once a business risk is identified, action is necessary. Being prepared enhances our capacity to survive when things go wrong. Avoiding risk is not usually practical in business. A business owner may need to accept some financial risk for growth or purchasing equipment. Responsible business owners find ways to manage risks effectively to ensure peace of mind.
When reducing or offsetting business risk isn’t possible, transferring the risk to an insurance contract is common. This is practical for public
liability or asset protection. Businesses often overlook the loss of human capital when considering risks. For most small to mediumsized businesses, sustainability depends on the capacity of their people to operate daily. Protecting your business from unexpected events is critical.
MANAGING KEY PERSON RISKS
A good way to identify key person risks is to ask, “What do we do if…?”
Short-term disruptions
For most businesses, having a cash buffer is essential. Consider temporary outsourcing or cross-training your team. Higher-risk, cashflow-sensitive businesses might consider business expenses insurance.
Medium to long-term disruptions
Managing medium to long-term risks is more complex. The primary solution is risk transfer through insurance. Small to medium-sized businesses typically lack the cash reserves or alternative capital sources to offset the prolonged absence of key personnel, so key person insurance becomes essential. For owner-operators, consider the interdependency with personal financial risks. Consult with your financial advisor to ensure adequate coverage.
Worst case scenario: permanent disruption
Consider the impact of permanent health disruption to yourself or key personnel:
• Personal financial impact
• Financial impact on staff and their families
• Financial impact on suppliers and creditors
• Cost and time to close your business
“WE OFTEN INSURE OUR TANGIBLE ASSETS BUT OVERLOOK INSURING OUR KEY PEOPLE.”
• Complexity of tax planning and unwinding affairs
• Ownership consolidation with shareholders or partners
Death cover and permanent disability insurance, along with buy-sell agreements, are critical. Businesses with partnerships should discuss these agreements with their advisors.
You and your team are your business’s most valuable assets. Effective management of people risks is vital for sustainability. We often insure tangible assets but overlook insuring our key people. Have a plan, understand your financial risks, and seek help from qualified advisors. u
DID YOU KNOW?
• For correct tax treatment, key person insurance should be classified for revenue or capital purposes.
• Death or permanent disablement insurance can act like a will for the business with a buy-sell agreement.
• Families of shareholders may be entitled to profits after a partner’s death or disability, which can impact business costs and ownership obligations.
• Critical illness insurance provides options for business risk management, covering diagnoses rather than work capacity.
• Some insurance policies might not cover you if you leave employment to start a business. Check your coverage.
• Own Occupation disability cover assesses your ability to work in your specific occupation, while Any Occupation considers any suitable occupation based on experience and training.
• From 1 July 2024, the concessional contribution cap is $30,000, and the nonconcessional contribution cap is $120,000.
• If your super balance is under $500,000 as of 1 July 2024, you can utilise catch-up contributions within the cap of the relevant year.
• A tax offset of up to $540 is available for a $3,000 super contribution to an eligible spouse.
• Government co-contributions of $500 apply for a $1,000 non-concessional super contribution with a total income less than $45,400, with reduced co-contributions up to an income of $60,400.
• From 1 July 2024, the tax threshold is $135,000 before the 37% tax rate and $190,000 before the 45% tax rate, allowing you to pay yourself up to $135,000 at a 30% tax rate.

Sustaining through adversity: KIRSTY WOODWARD’S JOURNEY HOME
BY SHARI HALL
It’s not every day that a nine-year-old daughter witnesses a catastrophic car crash that nearly kills her mother. Kirsty Woodward, a property manager at NetworkHQ and a single mother of two, experienced a life-altering event that significantly changed the lives of her and her children and could have ended her career. Yet, through resilience, determination, and passion for her career as a property manager, Kirsty has survived and thrived, embodying the true essence of sustainability in her quest to persevere despite severe adversity.
FROM TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH
Before joining Network HQ, Kirsty’s life took a dramatic turn when she was involved in a near-fatal car accident. As the passenger, she sustained 23 fractures, including a severe spinal injury. Her family was told she wouldn’t live more than 24 hours. “My first memory was waking up in ICU the afternoon after the accident. I thought I was dreaming,” she recalls.
Despite the severity of her injuries, Kirsty’s determination to recover was unwavering. The accident left her hospitalised for two months and required 14 operations, including a total hip replacement. She faced a life-threatening blood clot and endured intensive physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and rigorous exercise routines, and had her doctors calling her “the walking miracle.”
THE LONG ROAD HOME
Returning home in a wheelchair, Kirsty’s strength saw her transition to crutches within a day. Her supportive parents and children were beside her throughout her hospital stay and beyond. “They looked after me for a couple of months after I returned home,” she notes.
Kirsty's recovery journey was not just physical but also mental. She worked closely with a psychologist to cope with the trauma and an occupational therapist who guided her through her rehabilitation.
“There were so many times I was told my life could end. My kids have always been the carrot dangling in front of me. They kept me going,” she says, emotionally. “And while
“THERE WERE SO MANY TIMES I WAS TOLD MY LIFE COULD END, AND WHILE EVERY DAY IS STILL A BATTLE, I SURVIVE. I’M HERE.”
every day is still a battle, I survive. I’m here.” Her children witnessed her struggle through the pain, which has significantly influenced their compassion and resilience.
MOTHER, PROPERTY MANAGER, SURVIVOR
Kirsty’s professional journey is equally inspiring. Before the accident, she had nearly ten years of experience with her previous employer, setting up and managing a property management business from scratch. Kirsty was eager to return to work during her recovery. “I wanted to work throughout my healing process, but my medical staff declined,” she says. Eventually, she received clearance to work four hours a day, leading her to apply for a position at Network HQ, the only job she sought.
Her extensive experience of 28 years in property management and her personal trials have made Kirsty a unique asset in the property management industry. “I love the challenge of being a property manager,” she states. Kirsty’s day starts early, juggling responsibilities as a mother and a property manager with meticulous attention to detail. As more and more of her old clients learn of her return to work, they call enquiring about her wellbeing and ask if there’s room on her list again for them, testimony to her dedication to them and providing an exceptional customer service experience.
Kirsty’s empathy and understanding of the struggles faced by tenants in the current market make her stand out. “I’ve had people cry when they finally find a home,” she shares, highlighting her ability to connect with property owners and tenants. “Customer service is my biggest thing, building relationships with both parties,” she emphasises.
Kirsty’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and the human spirit’s ability to sustain itself through adversity. Her journey from a near-fatal accident to becoming a cornerstone at Network HQ is nothing short of inspiring. This experience has shaped her professionally and given her a renewed perspective on life. “I’ve got a great work-life balance now,” she says, appreciating the importance of personal wellbeing alongside her professional commitments.
As Kirsty prepares for a new chapter in her life, moving to a new home away from the daily reminder of her accident, she remains optimistic and strong. Kirsty Woodward’s story is a testament to the power of resilience. Her ability to sustain and excel in her career as a property manager while navigating personal challenges demonstrates how one can continue, thrive and inspire others regardless of the obstacles faced. u

The Spirit of Business working from the inside out
BY JILLY GABRIELSON
Over the past couple of years, I’ve mentored hundreds of retail owners and staff on Workplace Wellbeing to support them through the business’s ups and downs.
When I stripped away all the bells and whistles, it became clear how we overcomplicate business with complex structures, procedures, rules, and regulations. This can erode the original heartfelt idea, which is responsible in the first place for driving the passion of creating a business.
This complication happens when we overthink everything and resist making decisions. Rather than moving forward, even if we must adjust the sails by combining intuitive and practical moves, we get stuck on the end result, which prevents the natural flow of opportunity from occurring.
One key reason for overthinking processes is the financial pressure to get it right, or ‘perfection procrastination’, which stops forward momentum. When decisions are finally made, they are often overthought, very practical, and look good on paper but lack the energy of human instincts.
This results-driven focus traps us in a mind loop of pushing harder to get results by thinking more, trying to control more, and manipulating to get into a better position and make certain things happen. Management then carries this business tightness, which is felt by staff and customers, even if not discussed.
Staff can unknowingly start to get tight around their own performance and doubt
their abilities. Sometimes, this can result in mental health issues, divisive teams, sick days, or resignations, all of which cost the company a lot of time and money. We must remember that there is no business without people, and their emotional wellbeing drives performance.
Because we are talking about the unseen, emotive energetics of business, they are given little attention, as the way of business is driven by seeing physical results, regardless of how they are achieved.
When business is only driven by the physical, it kills the passion for ideas, intuitions, hunches, gut instincts, and the humanistic pioneering spirit that originally formed the company.
Very quickly, our passion becomes pain, and challenges start to outweigh the creation.
This affects management and staff in two ways. Many become totally focussed on physical results, which keeps them restricted and limited in the system and restricts their mental and emotional growth. It can also create an ethos of not caring about others, as “I’m being paid to do my job, and that’s it!”
Other individuals who are naturally willing to use their emotional and physical abilities to enhance themselves and their workplace become the ‘standout’ leaders.
These people can keep their passion, warmth, and care as they realise the need to create a wholesome culture based on emotionally, mentally, and physically coming together to form one team.
For businesses to thrive, it is up to everyone to take responsibility to be the ‘best version’ of themselves. This simply means we need to be able to look inside ourselves at any nonoptimal behaviour that may be confining our abilities and unknowingly contributing negatively to the workplace.
This philosophy starts from the top. It is important for business owners to self-reflect; then they can ‘walk their talk’ and contribute to creating a wholesome culture that is not solely based on physical results.
When we work to create a thriving and dynamic workplace, everyone benefits. This has a ripple effect as individuals take their energy home to their families, enriching everyone’s lives.
Any business operating this way is giving social currency and gaining financially, where longevity, loyalty, and rewards abound for all. u
1. Know and operate on your business values and recruit matching values (such as integrity, trust, openness, care, connection).
2. Be consistent with open communication and willingness to understand others.
3. Create a wholesome and open environment where staff feel encouraged to trust and engage with each other.
4. Trust yourself as a business owner. Make decisions confidently, and when unsure, research and seek input. Use your judgment to decide. Avoid procrastination, as it undermines trust in management. If more time is needed, communicate why and when a decision will be made to maintain momentum.
5. Always keep your heartfelt business passion as your guiding focus, so others can feel your genuine commitment and willingness to attend to the details necessary to achieve the vision.
Everyone can benefit from a Wellbeing Mentoring Session. Here is your chance to:
• speak freely
• honestly and openly unwind
• discover better ways to manage your feelings, work and life in general
Building SAFER BUSINESS together
SafeWork Australia’s 2022 report revealed that mental health accounts for nine per cent of worker’s compensation claims, a 37 per cent increase since 2018. In addition, the report found that mental health impacts business three-to-four times greater than all physical injuries and illnesses. This data provides a lens on the recent federal and local changes to WorkSafe guidelines, changing mindsets on what safety at work means for all.
Early in my career, my first days at a top four Australian bank were full of sadness hearing that an employee had hung himself in his office on the same floor a week prior. In the two decades that followed, I witnessed the impact of psychosocial hazards, some of which resulted in suicide, mental health and significant court action. These experiences imprinted upon me deeply that we can better care for each other - at work and at home.
The introduction of psychosocial hazards and risks within the new WorkSafe guidelines is for businesses of all sizes. Whilst the application for small business is untested, it is apparent that the responsibility of being safer together at work rests with the employer. People leaders and managers are highlighted as responsible, particularly with the increased duty of care and the right to disconnect. Certain sectors, such as aged and disability care, currently view psychosocial safety at work as the responsibility of the paying client (participant) receiving services from the employee. However, this view could now be interpreted as the business failing to appropriately manage psychosocial risks naturally inherent in care support roles. The question could be raised about whether the existing work design within the role supports psychosocial wellbeing. And, if the existing work design is deemed unsupportive of employee psychosocial wellbeing, the business may be asked to demonstrate the process being undertaken to satisfactorily improve work design.
Speaking with small businesses on the Sunshine Coast, we’ve heard uncertainty expressed in applying the new guidelines to the workplace. Upgrading workplace policy frameworks requires committed effort and expense, sometimes a complete rewrite to sufficiently comply. We’ve observed businesses that have yet to define what psychosocial risks pertain to their employee workforce and where role work design can be enhanced to support employee wellbeing and reduce psychosocial risk, including how to intervene and remediate a psychosocial incident. There can often be a lack of governance in place for regular audit and compliance reporting, including measuring change effectiveness across the business.

Compassionate FEEDBACK Framework A CHECKLIST FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND GROWTH
BY SHARI HALL
On a normal Thursday morning at the office, I was greeted by several of my colleagues. Each had a smile on their face and a delightful story to share as they entered my cubicle to say “G’day!” One meeting was scheduled on the calendar, so I expected the day to breeze by easily.
Shortly before that meeting, I was informed by email that it would now be held with a high-level executive from the company, not the department head, as originally planned. While curious about the sudden change, I had no concerns until I asked for an agenda, and none was provided.
The meeting occurred in a private room at the workplace, with only me and the executive present. At first, it appeared to be an informal conversation meant to ‘check in’ on my wellbeing, my demanding workload, and a review of concerns I’d recently raised. Sadly, this is not what transpired. Rather, it was a 75-minute interrogation regarding alleged complaints and reports about me, my behaviour and my professionalism in the workplace. The information presented was unsubstantiated, non-specific in nature, out of context, and grossly exaggerated. As the minutes wore on, I felt increasingly intimidated, anxious, and threatened, a stark contrast to the supportive and growthoriented environment I had come to know and love over the years.
To say I was traumatised was an understatement. The executive had painted a picture that was the antithesis of the reality of my work environment and who I knew myself to be.
After I lodged an incident report about the meeting, the company and a government agency investigated.
It was determined that while the executive acted with reasonable management action, he did it in an ‘unreasonable way.’ While the intention of the meeting may have been to show genuine concern for my wellbeing, the way it was delivered resulted in devastating
effects for both parties.
If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of poorly delivered feedback, you’ll understand why the ability to provide honest, compassionate, detailed, and actionable feedback is paramount for fostering growth and development in any business or organisation. Constructive feedback not only enhances individual performance but also contributes to the overall success of the company.
Many bosses use what has been described as ‘old-school tactics.’ These outdated methods have several negative outcomes: demotivation over motivation, erosion of trust, and, ultimately, long-term disengagement. When intimidation, embarrassing methods (like naming and shaming), and threatening tactics are used, employees are more likely to become defensive, feel demoralised, and be unreceptive to future constructive feedback. There may even be long-term mental health implications.
Giving and receiving feedback is a part of living. From infancy, when parents start saying ‘no’, to childhood, when teachers start assessing schoolwork, to adulthood, when family, friends and employers all seem to have something to say about who you are, what you do, and how you behave - it’s a fact of life.
It can be done better, though. This incident was one I would never forget; however, as a result, I created the ‘Compassionate FEEDBACK Framework’, which I hope and believe will, if used, produce a better outcome than the one I had.
By following this framework, business owners can create a culture of trust, growth, and continuous improvement within their organisation. This approach will not only enhance individual performance but also contribute to the overall success of the organisation, fostering a positive and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to grow. u
Bridging the gap for sustainability THE SUNSHINE COAST YOUNG CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
BY LILLIE GILLAM
For us at the Sunshine Coast Young Chamber of Commerce (SCYCC), sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s about making strategic moves today that will ensure our community thrives tomorrow. Our goal is to create a Sunshine Coast where we can live, work, and play without feeling the need to relocate to larger cities for better opportunities.
The Young Chamber recently teamed up with industry heavyweights Walker Corporation, SunCentral, Stockland, and Project Urban for a thought-provoking event. This event brought to light a significant issue: the disconnect between Sunshine Coast development and the young community. It was an eye-opener, highlighting a pressing need for alignment between our rapidly growing region and the aspirations of its youth community.
The event underscored a critical question: How do we make sure the Sunshine Coast grows in a way that includes and benefits young professionals? The collaboration with key players like Walker Corporation and SunCentral was a step towards answering this. These industry leaders are shaping the future of our region, and their projects will significantly impact where and how we live.
Stockland and Project Urban brought valuable insights into the conversation, focusing on sustainable development and urban planning. Their expertise is crucial in creating spaces that are not only economically vibrant but also environmentally friendly and community oriented.
As young professionals, we are at the heart of this transformation. Our involvement in these discussions ensures that our voices are heard, and our needs are met. We want to be part of a Sunshine Coast that offers diverse job opportunities, affordable housing, and vibrant social spaces. It's about creating a balanced life where professional success doesn’t come at the cost of personal wellbeing.
The future of the Sunshine Coast depends on the decisions we make today. By forging strong connections with developers and urban planners, we can influence the trajectory of our region’s growth. This is not just about maintaining the natural beauty of our coastlines or the charm of our towns; it’s about building a resilient community that can adapt to future challenges.
We envision a Sunshine Coast where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand—a place where young entrepreneurs can launch start-ups, where creative minds can find inspiration, and where families can grow and thrive. It’s about creating a legacy that ensures future generations have the same, if not better, opportunities. u

Sustaining hope by recycling lifelines
The dual impact of DV Safe Phone on domestic abuse victims and environmental conservation
BY BEN AND STACEY KENDALL
At the heart of every human being is an innate need for connection - to feel heard, valued, and understood by the people closest to us. Moreover, when we need it most, clear and compassionate communication is a lifeline that connects us to professional support services. From counsellors and therapists to crisis hotlines and support groups, having an avenue to voice our pain, fears, and mental health needs can be the difference between suffering in silence and finding hope.
Sadly, across Australia, many people face the reality of having their phones tracked, monitored, broken, or stolen by abusers to maintain control. It is estimated that over two million victims of domestic abuse in Australia need a safe phone to access services.
With over 80 per cent of Australians owning a smartphone, it is hard to imagine even one day without our phone. When phones are tracked or taken away, the ability to stay connected is lost, often with devastating consequences. This is why access to a clean, untraced, safe phone is vital for domestic violence victim-survivors to escape their situation or start a new chapter. This is where DV Safe Phone is transforming the futures of thousands of vulnerable Australians.
Ashton Wood is the founder and CEO of
DV Safe Phone, a registered charity based in Southeast Queensland, founded in 2020. As a Covid-19 lockdown loomed, Ashton sensed there would be people in need.
“I was surprised to hear from a friend in the Queensland Police that the best way to help domestic violence victims was supplying working phones to access essential services - trumping food, clothes or even toilet paper,” Ashton says.
“I knew that this is what I needed to do, and I started DV Safe Phone straight away with the lofty vision of providing every domestic violence victim in Australia access to a safe phone.”
DV Safe Phone collects smartphones from over 850 collection points from its home base in Mooloolaba, Queensland. The phones deemed fit for reuse are cleaned, reformatted, and sent to its Australia-wide network of more than 350 frontline DV agencies, police stations, hospitals, and safe houses. These safe phones can form part of an individual’s safety plan or enable them to look for work, get their children into school, and provide a better future.
DV Safe Phone offers a safe and economical way to do our bit for the environment. With every Australian generating up to 25kg of e-waste annually and only 20 per cent of mobile phones being recycled, DV Safe Phone can reuse approximately 35 per cent of the
phones it receives. The rest are used for parts or recycled through its partner, MobileMuster.
“We are proud of the circular economy we have created that enables individuals and businesses to provide their working phones to DV Safe Phone, and those phones are to be given another life or recycled,” Ashton says.
“We’re making a huge contribution on two fronts. Since 2020, we’ve repurposed more than 8,500 safe phones to DV victim-survivors through our partners and recycled 13,300 phones through MobileMuster, diverting more than two tonnes of e-waste from landfills and conserving precious resources.”
There are many ways to support DV Safe Phone. You can donate funds or phones, fundraise on their behalf and even volunteer. Companies can partner with DV Safe Phone to raise awareness of domestic violence, meet ESG and CSR obligations, and support the program by donating phones or financial assistance.

Grab life by the balls
Improving the wellbeing of boys and men through mateship
Sam Parker’s journey to founding Grab Life By The Balls began on the Sunshine Coast in 2016. A chiropractor passionate about personal development, Sam's growing practice revealed to him the pressing issue of men's health in Australia.
The catalyst for Grab Life came unexpectedly during a casual evening with friends in October 2016. Over burgers and whisky, Sam recognised the power of organic social connections in fostering wellbeing. In November of that year, he launched Bro’s Burgers & Brews, a monthly gathering promoting camaraderie among men.
Sam’s philosophy of proactive intervention, rather than reactive problem-solving, led to the evolution of Grab Life. Inspired by a desire to initiate change before crises emerged, the
organisation shifted its focus to men’s mental health, particularly in suicide prevention.
However, Sam’s personal journey gave Grab Life a unique edge. Struggling with the pressures of fatherhood, he confronted his own vulnerabilities. This experience deepened his understanding of men's mental health beyond statistics, shaping the organisation's approach.
Grab Life's impact expanded rapidly, garnering attention from The Alliance for Suicide Prevention Sunshine Coast and facilitating partnerships with Waves of Wellness and other organisations. By June 2019, Grab Life had established a network of events across Australia and New Zealand.
The onset of Covid-19 posed new challenges, prompting Sam to adapt Grab Life’s initiatives for virtual engagement. Despite setbacks, the organisation persevered, expanding its reach along the Sunshine Coast and beyond.
Fire up the BBQ from September 1 up to and including Father’s Day, September 8, and join a Grab Life By the BBQ! Join us in igniting conversations and breaking records, creating positive changes in men's mental health. Grab your mates, have a yarn, and Grab Life By the BBQ for men’s mental health.
Scan the QR code to register.
Sam’s innovative approach culminated in Be A Great Mate, a men’s health awareness talk designed to resonate with its target audience. The success of this program demonstrated that empowering men with knowledge could drive positive change.
Reflecting on his journey, Sam remains committed to expanding Grab Life’s impact, particularly among younger demographics. Through grassroots efforts and community partnerships, he envisions a future where men's health receives the attention it deserves.
As Grab Life grows, Sam’s dedication to the Mateship Movement remains unwavering. By fostering connections and empowering individuals, he believes positive change is possible and inevitable. Together, we are grabbing life by the balls, one conversation at a time. u

STORY OF DETERMINATION, OPPORTUNITY AND HOPE
From Kenya to the Sunshine Coast A
BY SHARI HALL
Every day on the Sunshine Coast, a remarkable story unfolds, embodying the spirit of resilience and the transformative power of community support. Meet Loise Njuguna, a single mother of two who emigrated from Kenya to Australia 24 years ago. Her journey has been fraught with challenges and opportunities, but her unwavering determination stands out.
Loise has carved out a life for herself and her children in Australia, navigating the complexities of a new culture and the hurdles of single parenthood. The aftermath of a difficult breakup left Loise without family support, burdened by debts and the emotional toll of her circumstances. Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast in her commitment to providing for her children. “I thought, what am I going to do now? I’ve just got to work more,” My daughter loves to dance, but it’s expensive,” she recalls.
talking… and that was it.” This event opened doors to new connections and opportunities, igniting a spark of hope for Loise.
“I started as a disability support worker and worked hard. When my manager noticed this, she offered me a position as a service manager, and I grabbed it. I currently do three jobs to keep my head above water.” Her resilience is nothing short of inspiring, as she balances multiple roles to secure a better future for her family.
A serendipitous discovery on Facebook led Loise to the LinkedIn Local Sunshine Coast page. On a whim, she attended one of their Wednesday night networking events despite not having a business. This decision would prove to be a turning point. “I went in there not knowing anyone,” she shares. “I thought, I'm just going to go because you never know. That’s when I met Luke Hawley. He gave such a good speech and introduced other people
One cold night while working as a taxi marshal on Ocean Street in Maroochydore, Loise stumbled upon an application for the Migrant Business Ready program. Despite the late hour and the looming deadline, she decided to apply. The application process was rigorous, demanding thoughtful and detailed responses, but Loise’s perseverance paid off. To her amazement, she was accepted into the program. “They actually accepted me! I couldn’t believe it,” Loise exclaims.
The Migrant Business Ready program, run by the Sunshine Coast Council, has been transformative for Loise. It provides support and training for migrants to start and grow their businesses. “The well-delivered sessions are awesome,” she says. “Our trainer prompts you to think about your business idea and how
it links to you as an individual.”
Loise aims to create a service centre for the elderly, offering support beyond the currently available options. She envisions a place where they can receive assistance with shopping, house cleaning, and participating in activities they enjoy, ensuring they do not feel abandoned or neglected. Additionally, as a single mother, she understands the struggles faced by others in similar situations and dreams of establishing a centre that provides holistic support to single parents. It would offer education, childcare, and recreational facilities, empowering single parents to pursue their dreams without compromising their responsibilities.
Loise’s story is a testament to the supportive and welcoming nature of the Sunshine Coast, a designated Welcoming City. Community business networking events like LinkedIn Local and government programs like the Migrant Business Ready program highlight the commitment to helping migrants build sustainable futures.
Reflecting on her journey, Loise offers valuable advice: be kind to yourself and speak up. Adjusting to a new country takes time, and it’s important not to internalise the struggles as personal failures. Finding the right support system and not being afraid to ask for help can make a significant difference.
“It’s very crucial to speak up. Find one person, I don’t care who, and speak up because that will save you,” Loise advises. “Never be afraid to ask, never be afraid to speak.”
As she continues to work toward her goals, Loise remains an inspiring example of how determination and the right opportunities can transform lives. u

Health charity strikes partnership to boost foster families
ABOUT WISHLIST
• Wishlist raises funds to support the growing health needs of patients and families on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie.
• Each year, Wishlist directs more than $1 million to enhance local health services through the provision of vital medical equipment, patients support services, supported accommodation, research, education and more.
Wishlist, a leading Sunshine Coast health charity, has announced its partnership with Integrated Family and Youth Service (IFYS) to enhance foster care opportunities in the Sunshine Coast community.
The innovative collaboration aims to address the growing need for foster carers by promoting the benefits of foster caring to health care workers to ensure better outcomes for children in need.
Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe says the partnership between Wishlist and IFYS signifies a united effort to address the critical need for foster carers on the Sunshine Coast and Gympie.
According to the Queensland Department of Child Safety, Seniors and Disability Services, the number of children in case increased to 11,600 as of September 30, 2023 – a 1.5 per cent increase (173 children) compared to the same period the previous year. Less than half of children are placed with kin – around 48.5 per cent.
“By combining our expertise and resources, we hope this partnership will genuinely make a positive impact on the lives of children who are at-risk in our community,” Lisa explains.
IFYS Managing Director Tony Pignata says one of the key highlights of the partnership is the valuable skills and attributes that health staff possess, which are highly transferrable to the role of foster carers.
“Health professionals, with their innate abilities to stay calm, respond to individual needs, and understand the importance of flexibility, are well-equipped to provide nurturing environments for children in foster care,” Tony says.
“At IFYS we are thrilled to be partnering with Wishlist. The partnership between the two services will allow us to focus on better outcomes for our community and explore ways that we can work together in caring and giving back to the Sunshine Coast.”
Wishlist already funds several programs to support vulnerable young people including funding a two-year Youth Advisory Group program to better provide a circle-of-care for young adults and adolescents with mental health conditions, an innovative $31,000 Adolescent Day Program for disengaged youth, plus research into how to better support young people accessing healthcare on the Sunshine Coast and in Gympie.
“We are a proud facilitator of collaboration,” Lisa adds.
“Our community may not know this, but Wishlist supports several other for-purpose organisations by directing money to fund programs that without support would not exist locally. This includes the Clown Doctors service, Dads Group, Black Dog Institute, Get Real Institute, Delta Society and more – all for the benefit of local patients and families.”
Wishlist has also partnered with several local businesses like Sunshine Toyota, AUSMAR, Wealthmed, Sunquest Signs and Tecoda to change the future of health on the Sunshine Coast.

Building a strong foundation
For more than 140 years, TAFE Queensland has helped people to change their lives. From supporting school leavers in kick-starting their careers and providing Queenslanders with the confidence and skills they need to pursue their true passion, to helping workers to advance further up their chosen path, the state’s largest and most experienced training provider is responsible for empowering countless students to achieve their goals.
But what happens next?
For Noosa-based builder Zye Norris, 30, undertaking his apprenticeship through TAFE Queensland was just the first step in what is now a successful career. Having grown up with a father who loved to DIY, Zye was instantly drawn to working in a trade, signing up for a school-based apprenticeship in 2010.
“My dad always used to work on the house on the weekends, so growing up I would ‘help’ him out, which made me realise I had a passion for working with my hands,” Zye said.
At each stage, I left feeling confident that I had learned and understood more than when I’d started there the week prior.
Having grown up in a surfing family, Zye’s talent in the water also heavily influenced his career choice, with the sponsored board-rider keen to strike a strong work/life balance early on.
“I would sometimes skip school to go surfing, and I would always see the tradies out there too. The idea of my career working around my lifestyle seemed pretty cool to me,” he laughed.
Employed by a local construction company, Zye completed his carpentry apprenticeship in blocks at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus, becoming qualified in 2014. Zye said this experience helped build his confidence in the industry and develop an appreciation for vocational education and training.
“It was always a great experience to get to work with other apprentices in the classroom and the workshop. At each stage, I left feeling confident that I had learned and understood more than when I’d started there the week prior.”
After seven years working in industry gaining valuable experience on the tools, Zye decided to return to study, enrolling in the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40110) at TAFE Queensland’s Nambour campus. Subsidised under TAFE Queensland’s partnership with Construction Skills Queensland, the year-long course provides participants with the skills and technical qualification they need to apply for a Builder – Low Rise Licence and successfully manage a residential building business.
For Zye, it was the logical next step.
“I did it online, so I would spend most nights and weekends with my head in the computer,” he said.
“When I signed up, I was just eager to learn more and take the next step in the building industry. But the more I learnt and
understood, the more the drive to start my own business grew and felt within reach,” he said.
Zye said the course gave him the push he needed to back himself. At the end of 2023, he started his own business while still working fulltime for his former boss, before taking the leap of faith to become fully self-employed at the beginning of 2024.
Zye Norris Building offers new architectural builds, renovations, and extensions across the Noosa area, with the goal of creating beautiful homes that fit people’s lifestyles while being functional and sustainable.
“Most people’s biggest financial purchase is their home, so when you’re fortunate enough to get the opportunity to create their homes and work with them throughout the process, it’s really rewarding,” Zye said.
Currently Zye employs one other carpenter to work alongside him, but he is already looking forward to the future and is excited to soon take the next step in employing his own apprentice – fostering the next generation of builders while investing in growing and advancing his own business.
“It won’t be long before I take someone on board and put them through TAFE to develop their skills the same way I was able to,” he said.
“The biggest challenge for me at the moment is to make sure I find the right work/life balance. I’m definitely not the first and I’m sure I won’t be the last to say this, but starting a business–any business–is difficult, and it is easy to get consumed by the workload when you’re doing it all yourself.”
That said, Zye is doing his best to achieve his childhood dreams and make both parts of his life work together – with some impressive results. As a competitive surfer, Zye has travelled the world, amassing a following of more than 20,000 people on Instagram. He continues to surf in local competitions, and now works with professional surfer Julian Wilson for his new brand, Rivvia Projects.
“I have been fortunate enough that my surfing career has led me to some amazing places and given me incredible opportunities,” Zye said.
“It certainly gets tricky balancing it all at times, but I’ve been lucky to be able to make both parts of life work together and run smoothly for the most part.”

SUSTAIN DAILY POSITIVITY USING BALANCE WITH COLOUR
BY LORRAINE & DR BOB ROBERTS PhD
THE ESSENCE OF BALANCE WITH COLOUR
Balance With Colour (BWC) is a unique and simple day-to-day practice that is easy to adopt and will quickly become a valuable habit. It is suitable for both the young and old, and can be used privately, shared with family, within groups, in schools, and in workplaces.
BWC helps balance our thinking with positive purposes for each day, drawing from messages nature has been sending since time began. By focusing on the positive words that come to mind, inspired by how colour is used in nature, and applying those positive intentions each day, we can maintain balance in our thinking and avoid focusing solely on negative thoughts that may overwhelm us. Colour is there for a reason, and we can learn so much from nature.
LEARNING FROM NATURE’S USE OF COLOUR
Imagine a garden full of flowers in different shapes, sizes, and colours. How would you feel about each one? Would you think about how amazing, pretty, beautiful, and delicate they are? Would you note their sweet smell or soft texture, and how you feel happy, calm, and fortunate to have the opportunity to experience them? Capturing those words and thoughts and building a vocabulary of positive words to create a repertoire of positive, purposeful actions to apply to yourself each day will improve your personal self-worth and confidence. This benefits everyone and makes you more empathetic and caring towards our natural environment. For instance, consider the blue of the sea and how fresh it feels. Ask yourself, ‘What can I do today that is fresh or new?’ Then apply that purpose for the entire day. At the end of the day,
reflect and record what you have discovered or improved in yourself.
ASK YOURSELF, “ WHAT CAN I DO TODAY THAT IS FRESH OR NEW?”
We are born with certain characteristics, talents, and beliefs that are passed on through our DNA, and our primary aim as an infant is survival. Gradually, verbal communication becomes important, and we start to learn words. There are different words and tones we can use to survive in our world. To thrive and feel contented, the words and tones we hear and use develop our character, and increase our talents and beliefs.
As natural beings, we depend on colour to survive in the same way everything on planet Earth does. Colour is there to give us warnings,
and we need to appreciate and care for what nature freely gives us. When we respect nature, it means we also care for ourselves and others, creating a win-win situation for all.
To appreciate the benefits of BWC and maintain your sustainability, practise the BWC concept daily. It helps keep us positive and prevents us from sliding into depression. When we are calm and in control, there is less tension in our homes, schools, and workplaces, and we live healthier, more productive lives. BWC learning and teaching aids are available on our website. u

From pain to purpose: sustainable solutions for high-performing professionals
As a high achiever, you’re likely proud of your ability to handle challenges independently and maintain control over your life. However, this self-sufficiency can sometimes come at a cost, especially when it comes to managing pain.
Perhaps you find yourself trapped in a cycle of discomfort, unable to find lasting relief. Pain doesn’t discriminate based on success or status; it can affect anyone, regardless of their accomplishments.
In fact, the pressure to maintain a perfect image of competence can exacerbate the physical and emotional impacts of chronic pain, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and burnout.
LETTING GO OF CONTROL AND BEING VULNERABLE
Living with chronic pain, whether it’s migraines, neck or back pain, is incredibly challenging. It doesn’t just affect your physical wellbeing but also affects your mental and emotional health. Daily activities like work productivity, sleep, driving, exercise, and even having fun can become daunting.
This is where vulnerability and reaching out for support become essential. Acknowledging your need for assistance and allowing yourself to be vulnerable, even as a high achiever, can help you break free from the constraints of pain and be the best you can be.
A UNIQUE APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE PAIN RELIEF
Chronic discomfort often leads to searching for quick fixes—medication, alcohol, or procrastination via social media and TV to suppress the pain. But what if there was a way to find relief and reclaim your health without leaving your home? Ann’s approach is not just about quick fixes; it’s about creating sustainable change. She offers a unique solution. Working by phone, she provides support wherever you
live, eliminating the need to travel and making it easier to fit into your busy schedule.
Her extensive training and expertise in energy medicine give her a unique understanding of the body’s subtle energy systems and their impact on physical health. With over a decade of experience working with clients worldwide, Ann addresses the root causes of pain rather than merely masking the symptoms. She understands true healing involves restoring balance to the body, mind, and spirit.
By addressing the deep-seated issues and traumas that manifest as chronic pain, Ann helps her clients achieve long-term relief and wellbeing.
SUCCESS STORIES: SUSTAINABLE HEALING IN ACTION
Take Maree, for example, who had been suffering from debilitating migraines for years. Despite trying various medications and treatments, nothing provided long-lasting relief. Frustrated and desperate for a solution, Maree turned to Ann for help.
Through a combination of energy healing techniques, intuitive guidance, and personalised support, Ann worked with Maree to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to her migraines. Maree experienced profound shifts in both her physical and emotional wellbeing. Her migraines stopped, and she regained control over her health and life.
Another client, Michelle, had been battling back pain for over a decade. Despite consulting numerous medical professionals, none could pinpoint the physical cause of her pain, and traditional treatments offered no relief. When Michelle reached out to Ann, she was surprised to discover the emotional impact contributing to her pain. Once this was addressed, her body began to heal, freeing her from back pain and allowing her to enjoy life again.
TIME TO TAKE ACTION
Struggling with migraines, neck pain, or any other physical discomfort can reduce your quality of life, and affect your ability to work productively and sustain your income.
If you’re seeking relief from physical discomfort or long-term pain and want to get back to the level of success you’ve become accustomed to, or want to fully participate again in activities you love—like going to the gym, biking, hiking, or playing with your children or grandchildren—don’t let pain hold you back any longer.
It’s time to act. Support is available, even if you’re sceptical or have given up hope. It is okay to embrace vulnerability, seek support, and achieve sustainable relief. What do you have to lose, except your pain?
Ann Noler Harris offers a safe and confidential space for you to explore your pain and heal. With her compassionate guidance and expertise in energy medicine, you can release the burden of pain and rediscover a sense of balance and wellbeing.

Remember to “Check the gums, please!”
BY DR JOHN CARRIGY
DO EVERYONE’S GUMS BLEED WHEN THEY BRUSH? NO.
Bleeding gums, although common, are not normal. They can be caused by a whole range of underlying problems. Some are reasonably harmless, like incorrect brushing. Some are more sinister as they can be a symptom of general poor health. If you have bleeding gums, it is wise to visit your dental team so they can carry out a thorough examination and diagnose the cause.
I HAVEN’T HAD ANY FILLINGS OR ACCIDENTS, SO I CAN’T LOSE MY TEETH – RIGHT? NO.
Although dental cavities and trauma are common and painful conditions for many people and can lead to tooth loss, Periodontitis (gum disease) often becomes the major threat to tooth survival as a person ages. Bleeding gums, bad breath, drifting or loose teeth, gum
recession, and “looking long in the tooth” can all be signs that you may be suffering from this silent dental condition.
IS IT TRUE THE HEALTH OF YOUR MOUTH IS LINKED TO YOUR GENERAL HEALTH? YES.
The mouth is part of the body, so, logically, general illness, malnutrition, and syndromes affecting the body will affect the mouth. Similarly, poor oral health is increasingly linked to poorer general health outcomes. Diabetes and cardiovascular disease may be negatively impacted by poor oral health.
IS NUTRITION IMPORTANT FOR YOUR TEETH AND GUMS? YES.
We chow down on various foods daily, causing a lot of wear and tear on the oral tissues, which are one of the hardest-working parts of the human body. To ensure our oral health is
at an optimum, we need to eat a well-balanced diet and maintain good oral hygiene.
I HAVE A GUM PROBLEM. SHOULD I SEE A PERIODONTIST (A GUM SPECIALIST)? POSSIBLY.
Gum problems are very common and easy to treat if picked up early. The best first step is to visit your general dental team or dental hygienist and tell them of your concerns. They will review your radiographs and conduct a clinical examination to check for developing gum problems. They may refer you to a Periodontist if they believe your issues are extensive or severe. Next time you see your dental team, ask them to “Check the gums, please.” u

How’s your vision and eye health? You may have perfectly good eyesight but have all sorts of badness happening inside. Many people don’t realise they are losing vision until it’s too late. Our Ophthalmic Nurse looked after a patient who discovered she had glaucoma after she was hit by a car crossing the road! Similarly, those suffering from cataracts often don’t realise their natural lens is becoming cloudy until they finally go to their optometrist thinking they just need new glasses.
Sustainable vision through self-care involves adopting practices that maintain and enhance eye health over the long term, reducing the risk of vision problems and preserving visual acuity as we age. Central to this approach is a combination of good nutrition, protective measures, regular eye check-ups, and lifestyle adjustments.
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and
Sustainable vision through self-care
minerals, particularly those found in green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, and fruits, supports eye health. Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc have been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Staying hydrated also ensures that eyes remain welllubricated and function optimally.
Protecting eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays by wearing sunglasses and widebrimmed hats can prevent conditions such as cataracts and skin cancers on lids and the eyes. Reducing screen time and practising the 2020-20 rule (taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away every 20 minutes) helps alleviate eye strain and dry eyes. Remember to always wear those goggles when mowing, using the whipper snipper or power tools, or other risky activities.
Regular comprehensive eye examinations are crucial for early detection and
management of conditions like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. These exams allow for timely interventions that can preserve vision.
Lifestyle choices, including avoiding smoking and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, also play a significant role in maintaining eye health. By integrating these self-care practices into daily routines, individuals can achieve sustainable vision and enjoy better eye health throughout their lives.
Our fabulous team at Best Practice Eyecare is here to help in any way we can. Our highly trained, friendly, and compassionate team, led by Dr Michael Karpa, can guide you through your eye health journey, and provide whatever measures you need to maintain your best eyesight for as long as possible. u

The lasting impact of
on the Sunshine Coast’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
BY LUKE HAWLEY
An event recently unfolded that has set a new standard for community engagement and economic sustainability on the Sunshine Coast. The inaugural Buy Local Day, celebrated with enthusiasm on June 22, was not just about boosting sales for a single day; it was about reinforcing the economic fabric of our community and ensuring long-term prosperity for local businesses.
Buy Local Day, organised by the Sunshine Coast Council in collaboration with Buy Local Sunshine Coast, aimed to spotlight the incredible contributions of our local independent businesses. The event called on residents to prioritise purchasing from local shops, which helps sustain these businesses and, by extension, our community.
The significance of Buy Local Day extends far beyond the immediate sales boost. Each transaction on this day contributed to a
more resilient local economy. As Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli highlights, “Our first ever Buy Local Day shines a spotlight on our beloved businesses and the benefits generated through spending money locally. Each transaction strengthens our economy now and into the future.” This sentiment underscores the vital role that local spending plays in fostering economic stability and growth.
A COMMUNITY UNITED
The success of Buy Local Day was evident across the region. In Eumundi, for example, the community rallied together with enthusiasm. The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and Experience Eumundi worked closely with local businesses to create an engaging and festive atmosphere. Eumundi Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Suters says, “Buy Local Day will put Eumundi well and truly on the map as a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.”
Eumundi businesses went out with special offers, free tastings, and engaging activities that drew locals and visitors. Eumundi Coffee Roasters Director Thomas Rumble echoes the community spirit: “Supporting local is one of the best ways you can bring life back into small towns.” The collective effort highlighted Eumundi’s unique charm and demonstrated how local businesses can thrive when they come together.
SUSTAINING BUSINESSES THROUGH LOCAL SUPPORT
Buy Local Day’s success is a testament to the power of community support in sustaining local businesses. Events like these remind us that small, independent businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. They provide unique products and personalised services and contribute significantly to the local economy by keeping money circulating within the community.
Caloundra Fishing World owner David Granville notes the benefits of leveraging promotional materials provided by Buy Local Sunshine Coast and encouraged other businesses to do the same. “Buy Local Day is the ideal day for consumers to make a conscious decision to purchase locally,” he says. This boosts immediate sales and fosters long-term customer loyalty and community resilience.
LOOKING AHEAD
As we reflect on Buy Local Day’s successes, it’s clear that ongoing efforts are needed to maintain this momentum. The event is a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses for a day and throughout the year. By prioritising local purchases, we can ensure the sustainability of our local economy, support local jobs, and maintain our community's unique character.
In conclusion, Buy Local Day was more than a celebration; it was a commitment to sustaining our community’s economic health. Let’s keep the spirit alive by supporting our local businesses daily, ensuring they remain the cornerstone of the Sunshine Coast for years to come. Together, we can build a thriving, sustainable future.

Sustainability success in business webinars
As the world grapples with the escalating effects of climate change, such as rampant floods, devastating fires, and unprecedented temperatures, local businesses are increasingly feeling the need to contribute to climate solutions. However, mounting pressures are making it challenging for them to integrate sustainability into their operations.
Recognising this pressing need, local climate author and educator, Megyn Carpenter, has developed a series of free webinars specifically designed to address the challenges that businesses face in implementing sustainable practices.
“Often businesses want to do the right thing, but with the complexities and lack of time, staff and resources, sustainability is often put in the ‘too hard’ basket,” Megyn says.
“With Mandatory Climate Reporting (MCR) coming in, businesses are on notice to reduce their carbon footprint and have a sustainability plan. Any business that supplies large companies must report from day one. Perfect sustainability is not practical. It’s better to focus on a handful of projects and practices that have meaningful impact.”

Tick paralysis: A year-round threat
Tick paralysis is a severe and often fatal condition affecting pets across the Sunshine Coast. Despite common misconceptions, ticks are prevalent in all areas and pose a constant threat. Animal Emergency Service Tanawha treats hundreds of tick paralysis cases yearly, highlighting the necessity for vigilance and prevention.
As a pet owner, you hold the key to safeguarding your furry friends. Regular use of tick-prevention products throughout the year is a simple yet effective way to significantly reduce the risk of tick paralysis. Early detection is in your hands. It can be a matter of life and death. Don’t hesitate to seek veterinary advice immediately if you notice any unusual symptoms, such as wobbly legs, breathing changes, altered voice, regurgitation, or facial drooping.
Tick toxin disrupts the communication between nerves and muscles, leading to progressive paralysis. Treatment involves the administration of tick anti-serum and supportive hospital care. It’s important to note that pets often deteriorate before they start to get better, underscoring the urgency of prompt treatment.
Regular checks and early intervention are vital. Prevention, vigilance, and timely action can save your pet’s life.
