To be truthful it was a pretty savage conversation I had with myself about putting myself on the cover. Should I? Shouldn’t I? Why should I? Why shouldn’t I? It’s so interesting, those Monkey Mind conversations. Holey crapomoly the voices in our heads that constantly sabotage our success and our happiness. This is the reason that this is now my passion; to help everyday individuals who are struggling with the ‘Monkey Mind Madness’, those voices in our head that seriously are NOT ON OUR SIDE. It is so mean sometimes, so nasty. My little Monkey Mind told me that people may think I was totally up my own ar#e to put myself on the cover of my own magazine, or maybe that I definitely wasn’t cover girl material, or that I was too old, too this, too that… So yeah, I had to work hard to make this decision to STAND TALL, to stand PROUD.

EDITOR'S

note

Losing 49 kilos over the last 12 months has given me the confidence to step into the authentic version of myself, the version of me that say’s “Yep, I’m worth this”, “Yes I am good enough to be on the cover of a magazine”, and not only that, who might I be able to inspire through this action? Who might think, “Wow, if Vickie could have that much confidence, that much courage, that much belief, maybe I could be more confident,

maybe I could have more courage, maybe I could believe in myself more? Maybe I could do something I currently don’t think possible.” So, this cover is for anyone who doesn’t think it would EVER be possible for them. This work that I am truly passionate about is a framework called ‘The Seven Superpowers for Success and Happiness,’ which is honestly the key to taming that ‘Monkey Mind Madness’ that really does sabotage our success, our happiness and our confidence too. Flip to page 60 if you would like to read more about how you can tame the Monkey Mind. So, it kind of does fit that I’m on the cover of the spring back issue, I’ve definitely sprung back to health over the last 12 months. My largest weight was 113 kilos, and I can now proudly say that I have SPRUNG BACK to a weight of around 64 kilos (give or take depending on the day). It’s quite interesting that my goal was always just to be NORMAL and now I am, I’ll argue that till the cows comes home, “Who wants to be normal, REALLY?” Not me. I always strived to be extra-ordinary, even when my weight was anything but normal.

Enjoy this issue of the magazine; we are so excited to be back in print, having had to do a ‘digital only’ issue for our June issue. We love that so many did read that, but we also love that you TOLD US OVER AND OVER that you love PRINT. Thank you. We do too.

OH OH OH IT'S MAGIC

OH OH OH

it’s magic

Standing here, exposed, amazed and proud, I look at myself in the mirror and ask, “How is this even possible?” A year ago, 49 kilos heavier than I am on the cover of this issue, I would look and see my eyes, my heart, and my soul, but I never saw myself as huge, even at 113 kilos. Quick thanks to the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s network for giving me the opportunity for a photography shoot with Jaya McIntyre, owner of Empire Photography, none of this cover stuff would have happened without that, so thank you and thanks Jaya for this cover shot. Until the age of 43, I had never been overweight. Don’t get me wrong – at 10, 20, 30 and 40 years old, I remember stages of thinking, saying, and believing I was overweight, but the truth is, I never weighed more than 69 kilos, and that was in the last trimester of my pregnancy! So what happened? How does a former teenage, middle-distance, Queensland Champion runner go from fit, fabulous, and fierce, to frumpy, frustrated, and feeling like a fraud? It all started on the 19th of July 1960. Born to parents, Elaine and Jerry Exton, I can say that my childhood was a very happy time. Only a month ago, I celebrated my 60th birthday with some of my most beautiful close friends and three of my favourite people, my beautiful sisters, Debby, Julie, and Sheree. Journeying all those times around the sun with them and sharing that milestone together will forever be my most treasured memories. At 41 years old, on December 15, 2001, I met Mr Magic; he would become the absolute love of my life – my rock, my soul mate, my shining light. He makes me smile each and every day, and in my heart, I know with him by my side, we are forever ‘twice the Magic’! As luck would have it, in 2003 I discovered I was actually pretty good at this advertising thing, and I just loved it. Since that time, I have worked in advertising and media, culminating in my owning Matters Magazine in early 2010. In the beginning, my focus was on selling advertising, while I loved writing, I wouldn’t really say I was a writer. I did everything backwards! Simultaneously working full-time on the magazine, I completed an editing course, a publishing course and finally, ended up becoming a journalist. Only a few years later, I was proud to receive the Outstanding Business Person of the Year and the Sunshine Coast Business Woman’s Network Micro-Small Business Woman of the Year awards and finally, the business excellence award for all of the Sunshine Coast 'Small Business of the Year'. I am so proud of those accomplishments, they truly validated all the work we were doing.

For the past 10 years, building a business, helping others as a life and business coach, living on the Sunshine Coast only minutes from the beach, sharing it with the love of my life and being a mum to my amazing children, Ashleigh and Jaime, I can honestly say I have an incredible life! Some days I wake up and simply pinch myself to see if it’s real.

Here’s a startling confession though; until just last year, I can share that I personally lacked confidence and hated who I was. I believed I was a fraud. You see, I had been trying to lose weight for over 15 years. It didn’t help that I was also an emotional eater, and had delicious food being prepared for me on a daily basis by my gourmet chef-like husband. Toss in a little stress, the ongoing demands of being a parent and business owner, and less than adequate coping skills, it was a recipe for expansion, and by that, I mean my girth! Whatever I tried, did not work. I felt that I had no control and I just couldn’t do it. This was devastating to me because in my coaching role, I was saying that I could help people to ‘be, do, and have’ whatever they wanted, but here I was unable to get the one thing I wanted most– a slim body. Unable to achieve the thing that was so important to me, not just for my confidence, but for my health, for my longevity, and my future. I felt pathetic, a fraud, and a failure. During my ongoing battle with the bulge, the words “I can’t” came out of my mouth on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. Try as I might, I could not find the off button to stop myself from eating the foods that clearly were making me remain overweight.

honestly say, it is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life; taking me back to the real me, the true me that had been hiding for so long beneath the layers of fat. Now, I am not advocating for weight loss surgery to be an across the board solution, for me it was a last resort after hundreds of previous unsuccessful attempts.

One day I was coaching a client and she was telling me over and over again how she couldn’t do something, “I have tried this, and tried that, and the other thing, nothing works for me, I just can’t,” she said. I remember saying to her, “I am sick to death of hearing you say I can’t; you have been saying this now for six months, about this same thing. Honestly, it’s enough!” So, I said to her, “Instead of telling me and the world and yourself over and over how you can’t, let’s do a ‘HOW CAN I?’ brainstorm.” Together, we brainstormed how she could. We listed everything she could do towards making this happen, everyone she knew who had achieved success in this area, and how they did it. I then asked her which of the things on that list she had tried, and which she hadn’t and which she would be prepared to try? It was so successful that the end of the session she said, “Vickie, I actually can. I know it. I can feel it. This is it.” And it was. From that day forward, she literally changed from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’. However, I left that coaching session and sat in my car and bawled my eyes out. I was her, I was, “I can’t, I can’t, I can’t,” about my

weight loss. I had been up and down and up and down for over 10 years. I just couldn’t do it. I truly believed that I could not. I truly believed that I just couldn’t stick to anything. “I just can’t.” I would say it over and over, just like her. When it came to weight loss, the words ‘I CAN’T’ became my absolute 100% truth.

That day was the turning point for me. I went home, sat my coach-self in front of me, and together, we brainstormed – me, myself, and I. Instead of saying “I can’t,” my coach-self asked “How can I?” I asked myself who I knew who had been successful, what had they done? Could I do that? Would I do that? I personally knew five people who had undergone gastric sleeve surgery with success. It was something I’d never considered before. The prospect of having half my stomach permanently sliced off terrified me. There was no way I would do that! I couldn’t! Or could I? I started my research and within a week, scheduled the procedure. I lost 49 kilos in a year. And I can

Having now lost the weight FOREVER, I feel like me again. I now have the confidence to live my life out on the skinny branches, to take risks, and to put myself out on a limb. I now have the belief that I am living my authentic life. I love entering a room at an event now; I feel proud of how I look, of what I’ve accomplished, and of who I am. I love to walk into a shop and buy from the rack, rather than having to go only to a few select shops that had clothes large enough for me. I now eat for nutrition, not emotion. Eating is definitely part of my life, and I love it, but it is no longer MY WHOLE LIFE. My purpose these days is to work with individuals who struggle like I did, with the ‘Monkey Mind Madness’, those voices in our head that sabotage our success and happiness. The framework of the ‘Monkey Mind Makeover’, is the seven superpowers for success and happiness, these unique superpowers are incredible, they pave the way for you to have the tools, on hand to call on whenever you need them. This doesn’t mean the Monkey Mind Voice won’t come, it simply means you have tamed it and have the tools to stay down for way way way less time. This means you get out of the way and step into your authentic you and be and do what you know you want to. Take a look on page 60 for more info on this.

You’ve got this. I truly believe in you! f www.VickieMagic.com.au

INVESTMENT MATTERS

NEGATIVE GEARING IS STILL A BIG DEAL

in the Australian property market WITH IAN UGARTE // SMALL IS THE NEW BIG

But contrary to what the majority of investors have been taught, negatively geared property is certainly not the best way forward, and many may not know that there are much more viable strategies. to get your team working remotely?

I . T. M AT T E R S

WHAT DID YOU OVERLOOK IN THE RUSH WITH JONATHAN ALLEN // SECURE ACCESS

Long before Covid-19 many businesses were, in varying degrees, moving towards offering or embedding some form of remote work capability in their organisations. This was largely driven by changing workforce demand such as flexibility. A new generation of cloud technologies now offer business mobile devices, better internet connectivity and improved work-life balance to meet demands of new generations of employees. All of these are very different scenarios to what we have seen over recent months where almost overnight, Australia-wide, entire businesses have been required to down tools, shut up shop, and regroup – remotely – from home. In this rapid change of course, the top priority, and necessarily so, was just to get people and resources connected and productive in the simplest and most timely manner. The number one thing businesses missed in the rush to get remote work ready?

Hindsight is now showing that the biggest trade-offs made in this rapid change to remote

DO YOU

working was IT Security. The majority of in-office IT security provisions are not built on the assumption that these resources will need to be taken offsite or accessed remotely, much less used from home. There are several critical IT security steps that must now be revisited to wrap some better protections around your remote workforce and reduce your attack surface. Circling back to remote working security now will also shore up your protections to make sure you can securely transition your devices and people BACK into the office, and out again in the future if we need to do it all again. Some of these considerations are •W hat short cuts did you take to get your team connected and accessible remotely? •D id you simply let your team take home a desktop computer that would normally not be mobile that contains company data for example? •W hat mechanisms are in place to prevent your team taking copies of sensitive data and copying onto personal devices or systems?

NEED

BETTER BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY?

•W hat mechanisms are in place to prevent sensitive company data being forwarded or provided to a competitor? •W hat new threats have emerged during this time of crisis that might derail your remote-working best efforts? •A re the devices now exposing your business systems to malware and viruses that may exist inside of your team’s home network? •A re the tools in place to monitor and prevent data leakage or protect against the significant increase in cyber scams and Covid-19 malicious cyber activity? •H ave you thought about what going back to the office might look like, or what you will do if you have to do all this again in the near future?

Consulting with your technology advisor and considering the answers to some of these questions will enhance the success of your remote work force and minimise the risk of a costly cyber breach event. m www.secureaccess.com.au

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF…

and back yourself BY VICKIE MAGIC

Melissa Austin, owner of local accountancy firm, Brilliance for Business, says, “If you don’t back yourself, how can you expect others to believe you?” She goes on to say that once you start believing in yourself and your ideas, the next imperative step is that you crunch the numbers. If you can’t do this on your own, your accountant or bookkeeper can help. “The numbers don’t give you all of the answers, but they help justify some of those ‘gut feelings’ you have,” Melissa says.

Once you have the belief, and you’ve checked the numbers, the next step is to ‘DO IT’, seriously, just get on with it, use laser focus until it’s done. 10 ISSUE 96

Melissa’s parents moved from Adelaide to the Sunny Coast when she was just 11, so she is almost a ‘born and bred’ Sunny Coaster. Attending Currimundi Primary and then Caloundra High, her family were your typical ‘Aussie Battlers’. At just 14 she secured her first job and before she knew it had purchased a tv and then a hi-fi system, it turned out she was pretty good with money. When she first met with the careers officer at her school, she had already been with her boyfriend (now hubby, yes they were high school sweethearts) for a couple of months, she told the careers officer that she wanted a career that would allow her to mix business and family. With the taste for achieving financial goals, Melissa went on to become an accountant, never looking back, and to this day she absolutely loves it.

In 2009 Melissa was awarded the prestigious Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network – ‘Young Business Woman of the Year’ award, which afforded her the confidence and support network she needed in order to take the big step to go out on her own. Her baby, Brilliance for Business was born in 2010. Back then, Melissa was just a one-man-band with a home office while also providing a mobile accounting service out of her car. Always having the goal and vision to have both a business and a family it was no surprise that her little girl, Maddie, was born just nine months later. Things took off pretty quickly, Melissa moved out of the home office within 12 months and within three years had a small team. The business has grown almost 100% on referrals and today has a team of seven and

Brilliance for Business is a young and tech savvy team, however all of their accountants have been trained the old-fashioned way (a dying breed). What this means is that the accountant that starts the work, completes and delivers the work, gaining unrivaled insight into their client’s business, meaning that any strategic or ‘big picture’ advice given is practical, realistic and truly personalised. They know their clients, they know their businesses, they know their numbers. Melissa shares that the last few months have been incredible! Professionally, in response to Covid-19 and JobKeeper, they’ve never worked so hard, so adaptively and so proactively. Whilst it hasn’t been easy, Melissa acknowledges that it is a once in a lifetime professional event. “It has made us stronger as a team and we have loved being there for our clients. There were some really difficult conversations and major workloads that we faced – it wasn’t all roses and rainbows.” Mel and her team have never worked quite so hard; they wanted to support as many of their clients as possible, to ensure that the majority fared well, and they are delighted to report that some are even doing better! Those that were forced to close are slowly getting back up and running and all in all things are looking positive,” Melissa says. Of course, there are still challenges ahead, she knows they are not out of the woods just yet, but overall, most clients are beginning to feel optimistic. Melissa is a wife and a proud mother of four, with her eldest, Maddie, nine years old, Connor, seven, Jaxson, six and Chloe, three. They are the reason she gets up in the morning.

“If I can inspire them to be of service, to be compassionate and to be good and decent people – I would have lived a great life! I am so proud of the business that I have built, my team and the amazing clients we get to work with and get great outcomes for,” she says. I asked Melissa to share her strengths and weaknesses. She started with her strengths, stating the importance of one of her favourite phrases - listen and seek first to understand. Going on to say that every person who walks through their doors has hopes and dreams and that she gets to help them realise their full potential and possibility. Her main weakness is that she is a 'yes' person, because she just loves helping people, though her enthusiasm to serve and please often makes her overcommit.

Final word – Melissa shares from the heart...

“We live in the most beautiful place and we have the most amazing businesses and business owners. During times of prosperity and especially during times of challenge, where possible choose kindness, it doesn’t cost a thing, but could be the most valuable gift you give.” e www.brillianceforbusiness.com.au

ARE YOU REPRESENTING YOUR BUSINESS

as well as you could? A logo is a flag, a signature, a street sign, a business card, a newsletter, a presentation folder, a car. It represents who you are as a business, what you do and how professional you are perceived. MAYBE IT IS TIME FOR A BRAND MAKEOVER. When you first consider designing a logo, it may seem a fairly simple skill to acquire, but that is only until you actually get started on designing one. A well-known designer sums it up as ‘Anyone can design a logo, but not everyone can design the right logo’. A logo is not just an image, it is also an introduction to your business brand. We know that ‘first impressions count’, however a logo also creates brand trust and loyalty. A strong logo design conveys your product, your service, your identity, it SHOUTS out who you really are. It needs to create recognition, trust and reputation through its design solution and must be carried through all marketing strategies whether print or digital.

magazines - press advertising newsletters, signage/packaging, digital - social media artwork - email marketing - website banners - email signatures. Zonya has seen many changes in the industry, in the way design work is created and produced BUT what has not changed is the need for good business branding and the need to TRULY stand out in the marketplace. Business branding is the cornerstone of any company so it can be seen in the marketplace and it must start with defining your business’s values how you want this to be communicated in the marketplace. Taking time to define your brand/business values makes for easier marketing of your business. If your logo no longer relates in terms of business values or event personality, as sometimes there is a shift in direction, then important to revisit your business branding and maybe refresh, revamp, rebrand. Sometimes, it can be just a simple case of updating font styles, colour palette and styling, other times it needs to be a complete rebrand.

It is essential that you are seen holistically. A logo is rarely about ONE thing; it must work together with all the other facets of your business to anchor your business branding.

THE CHALLENGES

of print

WITH ASH WANBON, GRAPHIC DESIGN & PRE-PRESS // THE INKSPOT COMMERCIAL PRINTERS In the past century, the printing industry hasn’t been without its share of doubters. When radio became a popular choice of households in the early 1900s, many people predicted the fall of print. It never happened. When television became a staple in homes around the world, print was again predicted to die off. Not only did it stay alive, but it continued to share in a healthy slice of the marking and advertising pie. Then when the internet’s popularity took off in the late 1990s and early 2000s, many experts again predicted many aspects of print would disappear. The new digital world made a significant impact on the printing world in many different segments (possibly none more than the newspapers industry) and is still creating new challenges for the industry to overcome. That said, many printing companies have found ways to adapt and continue to run profitable operations, introducing new services and technologies to their businesses. Then enter 2020, and the dreaded Coronavirus pandemic! If things were not challenging enough for us

in the industry already! Companies in all sectors have had to find ways to adapt and be agile in our new reality, which includes stay-at-home orders, social distancing, supply line challenges and a great deal of personal protective equipment. During the height of the corona pandemic, print production in China fell by up to 80% compared to normal volumes, but subsequently recovered as the infection curve fell and is now back to last year's levels. As businesses begin to reopen here in Queensland, we are also starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! The coronavirus pandemic has

wreaked havoc on all facets of business and life. Countries around the world have shut down most businesses and schools in an effort to minimise the projected health impact. We have not observed such devastation in our lifetime, but we are ever optimistic normality will resume in the near future.

It’s also a sure sign things are on the up, when you see Matters Magazine back in circulation on the Sunshine Coast! m www.theinkspot.com.au

WORLD CLASS INTERNET WITH IAN ROBSON // SUNRISE INTERNET

The Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. High speed internet is synonymous with economic growth and advancements in education, telemedicine and tourism. Innovation related to ICT and digital technologies is one of the key components for future economic and social strength. In 2020, the Sunshine Coast is experiencing a boom in world class fibre internet availability. The new subsea internet cable landed in Maroochydore on Christmas Eve 2019, and during 2020 the ‘Landing Station’ in Maroochydore has been busy preparing for powerful new internet fibre links to better connect Queensland to the world. The Honourable Kate Jones, Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development and Minister for the Commonwealth Games, said the following about the need for world class fibre internet: “We live in the digital age. A strong, reliable internet connection is crucial when it comes to growing businesses, exporting overseas and creating jobs in Queensland”.

Affordability

1 Gbps+ speeds are now available at a fraction of the cost only 3 years ago, and the cost to connect fibre to premises has been substantially reduced enabling more equal access.

Availability

The Sunshine Coast has had many internet black spots where it has been assumed fibre would not become available. North from Noosa, south to Caloundra and west to Palmwoods, this has now changed. Awareness is low, availability is high.

Reliability

World class fibre internet normally comes with 99.95% service level guarantees. It is not subjected to the well known problems of peaktime congestion, drop-outs, storm interruptions and does not cause concerns often associated with wireless antennas and base stations.

Connectivity

Network has fallen short. More than 97 per cent of Queensland businesses are small businesses, with many operating from home or generating their sales online.” The increased awareness of importance and availability of proper internet connectivity and the benefits of world class internet across the Sunshine Coast.. MAKING THE UPGRADE 1. Optic fibre is vital to get the secure and guaranteed speeds to premises for businesses, hotels, resorts. Fibre internet can be easily connected to existing wiring within buildings, saving on often prohibitive costs of re-cabling buildings

RISE INTERNET NECTS SUNRISE INTERNET SUNRISE INTERNET RLDSUNRISE CLASS INTERNET CONNECTS CONNECTS CONNECTS WORLD CLASS RNET WORLD WORLDCLASS CLASS INTERNET OSSINTERNET THE INTERNET ACROSS THE SHINE COAST ACROSS THE ACROSS THE “There’s no denying that the Federal Government’s National Broadband

Cloud computing, internet telephony, video conferencing are growing exponentially and changing the way we communicate effectively and competitively. World class fibre internet connections enhance these advantages, and can vitally improve cyber security and data back up.

2. The speeds are massive and support the exponential increases in downloads and uploads. For example, at the Sand Dunes resort in Mudjimba, the downloads have increased from one terabyte per month to eight terabytes per month in peak season over three years. 3. In 2020, with multiple devices competing over WiFi for bandwidth, ‘future-proofing’ networks is more important than ever. The Covid impact on broadband is substantial too. With the new fibre internet solutions available across the Sunshine Coast the region is now well poised to make a great leap forward. m

less is not a bore! WITH CARLIE WACKER WORLD OF WACKER

The fashion forecast has a little something for everyone from minimalist dressers to the over-the-top impressers. I am loving that the tailored heritage check and singlebreasted skirt suiting is giving workwear a new life. Those that still have office jobs can go from the desk to dinner in fine style. On that note, changes to work situations for many has led the fashion industry to divert its path slightly and embrace new ranges that include lounge wear. No excuses to work from home in your tracky dacks and t-shirts when the labels have been working hard to release ranges that make at-home style a little more sophisticated. By the way, earring sales have skyrocketed as many work video calls only require the participant to jazz up the head section. The feminine florals, fringing and velvet continue to be on trend for the boho babes with a 70s vibe. Earthy colour palettes, textures and patterns reflect the changing fashion industry – an industry now looking to meet the needs of a more conscious consumer.

LOCAL DEMAND FOR BOTH SALES

and property management on the rise WITH YASNA HAWTHORNE // LJ HOOKER MOOLOOLABA Real Estate on the Sunshine Coast is looking like it is about to see further demand with some borders opening and people beginning to make their way back into Queensland to look for their dream home. Demand for properties to buy on the Sunshine Coast is certainly on the rise. We are beginning to see all level properties including one and two million-dollar properties selling quickly. This shows confidence in the region, which is exactly what we were all hoping to see. There is also the possibility with such a long time between visits that once the visitors from the South begin to return more and more demand for properties to buy will begin. It

would be a great idea for Sunshine Coast homeowners looking to sell to prepare their home to look its best over the next few months. On top of that, if you have a rental property you will be happy to hear that the rental vacancy rate is virtually NIL. So, there is lots of demand there. This is starting to drive rent prices upwards, which is,

of course, great to hear if you are a landlord. If you are a tenant, you should ensure all your paperwork is completed even before you head out to look for a rental property to make an effort to keep ahead of other applicants. m www.mooloolaba.ljhooker.com.au

IS HOLDING

worth the gamble? WITH ROD RUSSELL // SAVVY BUSINESS SALES Kenny Rogers' lyrics from his famous Gambler song, “You’ve gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, know when to walk away and know when to run” is a great analogy to choosing the right time to exit your business.

This suggests business owners are hanging on, likely as they are concerned, they may not achieve a favourable price/terms if they sell now. For many business owners this could not be further from reality, whilst so many buyers are sitting on the side lines, eager to invest.

You see, like many industries, business sales are cyclic, and our market can quickly fluctuate, generally driven by the supply and demand of buyers and the business opportunities on the market.

Considering baby boomers collectively own the largest percentage of operating businesses and 70% of them will have to retire in the next 15 years, our cycle is about to turn, and without doubt we will see a wave of businesses flood the market.

Despite the unrest of Covid-19, Australia-wide buyer enquiry rates have increased dramatically. Perhaps this is due to a combination of job insecurity, all time low interest rates, buyers wanting to be their own boss, or the high returns on investment they generally achieve.

The difference in the sale price and conditions for business owners exiting in a sellers’ market, compared to a sale in an overcrowded buyers’ market could be extreme.

For a business broker, knowing there is an abundance of buyers is fantastic; however, the problem we currently have is we only have around 25% of our normal stock holdings.

So business owners, if you have been considering selling, capitalise on these unique conditions… remember, “You’ve gotta know when to run”! ca www.savvybusiness.com.au

With over 25 years’ experience selling businesses on the Sunshine Coast and beyond, Rod Russell and his awardwinning team at Savvy Business are leaders in buying or selling businesses.

INDUSTRY disrupters BY SHARI HALL IMAGE BY JASON HAY PHOTOGRAPHY

What do you get when you put a bold, vivacious, energetic, instinctive, big picture dynamo woman, with a cool, calm, methodical, business savvy, IT Brainiac man? You get a powerhouse DUO ... that simply will not settle for providing the same old service as the rest of the industry. Business partners Luke Forman and Kylie Chivers, founders of GuaRENTeed, a brand new way to do business in the property management industry, are trailblazing a new way forward for property owners, by creating a UNIQUE and much needed solution to their clients' biggest challenges. This way forward offers a better landlord experience by merging expert property management, data analytics and risk guarantees. Being landlords themselves for over 20 years, they knew that the industry as it was needed a shakeup, a solution that protects the landlords from the biggest pain points and risks. If you have ever owned an investment property you will know the frustration and pain that can come with it, legislation often favors the tenant even when they are in the wrong! 26 ISSUE 96

INTRODUCING ... A PREMIUM PROPERTY MANAGEMENT SOLUTION = GuaRENTeed. If you’ve ever played the game CASHFLOW® by Robert Kiyosaki, then you would completely understand how Kylie and Luke got out of the rat race and onto the fast track! Now the Directors of GuaRENTeed – a “premium, full-service property management solution,” the story of how this former hairdresser and I.T guru went on to become a successful real estate investors and corporate property management entrepreneurs is not really that surprising. Having a one-hour chat with Kylie and Luke, the founders of GuaRENTeed, is like having a master class in the principles of success. Here are some of my takeaways from them of what works. 1. You must have a BURNING DESIRE Kylie and Luke realized early that they

weren’t going to make money working for someone else, they knew they didn’t want an off the shelf business. They knew they needed to become self-sufficient. However, they also knew that they wanted to create and innovate to make a real difference to people’s lives. Kylie bought her first property at the age of 20 and rapidly discovered she could leverage off properties and make money in real estate. She had a passion and love of property and she was determined to follow that passion at all costs. 2. Form your MASTERMIND GROUP Luke and Kylie understand that having like-minded partners whose strengths and knowledge complement and supplement their own, is essential to growing and developing a successful organisation. Luke has an MBA and an extensive background in information technology, having started a mobile internet development company that was acquired by nine-MSN in Australia and New Zealand, and

Merkle in the USA. Additionally, he had more than 20 years’ experience in his family’s McDonald’s franchise. He brings his in-depth understanding of business and data analysis to the company. Kylie’s brother, Jason, adds expertise in systems, procedures, and processes. Together, with their team of 20, they have a collaboration of minds that support, encourage, and inspire one another to constantly innovate and be the best they can be. 3. Pay a MENTOR or COACH From as early as 2003, enlisting the guidance and assistance of a business coach has been a priority for Kylie and Luke. They believe self-investment is well worth the cost. After attending a Tony Robbins business mastery event in Las Vegas, they joined his ‘Platinum Partners Group’ to help them define and refine their business concept and apply new ideas and strategies to make their services on offer compelling to the consumer. This investment was priceless, and as Kylie says, “genuinely amazing!” 3. Love your IDEAL CLIENT and embrace their FEEDBACK and TESTIMONIALS To develop the right solutions for their clients, and remain on the cutting edge of their industry, they strive to consistently understand the ongoing needs and wants of their customers, whether tenants, landlords, property investors, or commercial corporations. They go direct to their consumers and partners (like financial planners, accountants, investors, developers, and mortgage brokers) and ask, “What’s lacking? What do you need?” They take on the role of the “ideal tenant” to really comprehend what’s needed for real estate ownership to be hassle-free for the investor. Managing compliance issues, vacancies, maintenance, utility bills, rental arrears, and

bad tenants, are just a few of the services they provide. By remaining customer-focused, new clients are readily acquired, and more importantly, retained. Luke says, “We are constantly getting five-star ratings from our clients, and we consistently embrace the feedback that comes in. One of our core values is to have ecstatic clients … nothing less!” 4. Define your POINT OF DIFFERENCE GuaRENTeed provides its clients with peace of mind. The team prides itself on its excellent and available communication, fixed-priced packages that offer flexibility and predictability, decades of experience with a trusted track record, and their #1 government rating as an NRAS (National Rental Affordability Scheme) provider, four years running. Kylie says, “We have developed our whole company around what is best for our customers, taking the pain and frustration away.” 5. Take MASSIVE ACTION Kylie and Luke are not shy about the fact they strive to achieve lofty goals! At one point, they researched what government funding options were available for developers, and asked questions of Members of Parliament, the Department of Housing, and even the Mayor, about smaller lot developments. With perseverance and tenacity, they were ultimately awarded 1000 grant allocations under the NRAS scheme! With their new company, GuaRENTeed, they have also set a massive goal of going from managing their current 1000 properties, to 25,000 by the year 2030! 6. See challenges as OPPORTUNITIES The Covid-19 pandemic, for many businesses, has presented insurmountable challenges, even leading to closure. However, always choosing to see potential setbacks as opportunities, Kylie and Luke quickly

realised they were well positioned to leap forward into a cloud-based business. With staff already working remotely, a cloudbased phone system, and IT systems in place that easily kept them up-to-date and in compliance with the newest government legislation, not only have they survived, but they have simultaneously instilled confidence in their ability to handle any challenge and find the solution. 7. MONITOR, ANALYSE, MODIFY, and repeat! Their other business coach, ‘The Rich Dad’ from Rich Dad Poor Dad, Keith Cunningham, taught them: BETTER OPTICS = BETTER DECISIONS = MORE MONEY So, Kylie and Luke say, “We are strict in our procedures and processes and monitor what the data is telling us. Our guarantees are based on the data analytics and technology Luke has built behind the systems. We haven’t just pulled these numbers out of the air,” says Kylie. They are methodical and disciplined, and they let the numbers guide any necessary modifications. It’s how they can provide Australia’s first Landlord guaRENTees. 8. Commit to CONSTANT and NEVERENDING IMPROVEMENT “Our service is great,” Luke says. “We guaRENTee the results, we provide lower risk, and we help our clients make more money; it’s all they could really ask for!” For Kylie, what matters most is having purpose. “We look after our team; they are our family. We serve our clients. We continue to grow, we show them that we care, and we do the right thing. Our passion is to make the experience better for both the tenant and the property owner by learning more and giving more. We want it to be easy, it should be ... Now it is!” e www.guaRENTeed.com.au

PERSONAL

branding What is a personal branding session, and do I need one? A personal branding session is for any business owner, aspiring professional or small business owner intending to elevate their business game. Think about some of your favorite stores — even large ones like Target, Sportsgirl, Billabong. Each of these businesses has a very distinct vibe, right? In the same way, the goal of a personal branding photography session is to zero in on your authenticity and broadcast it to the world through images that are used for your website, social media accounts, newsletters, and beyond. It's imperative that images help you come across as professional and confident, so

that potential clients feel like they already know you. And we all know that when a potential customer feels more endeared to you, they will be more inclined to work with you! We’ll work closely with you to ensure your personal branding session captures images that clearly demonstrate who you are. That said, here are two things to consider as you prepare for your own personal branding session:

IT’S YOUR PERSONAL BRANDING SESSION Show your brand, show who you really are.

if you’re a photographer you’ll want to bring a camera, if you’re a jewelry designer then wear your favorite pieces. Most likely we’ll want to get a mix of neutral locations and then a space that represents your business. If you’re a restauranteur, images at your restaurant would be perfect. ca

STILL SERVING YOU

30 years on Tele2 has been on the Sunshine Coast for over 30 years and some of our business relationships actually go back that far. Back then, all that was needed was a connection to landlines on the copper network, and a PBX phone system. Once it was connected and set up, it stayed that way until it got old and needed replacing. The world has changed, and the needs of businesses are more varied and complex. Not everyone has the same requirements. But what has not changed, is the need to build a trusting relationship before you can offer your services and advice. That’s our main focus. Building those relationships, so that people will be happy to refer your services. Doesn’t get any better than that.

We ask questions, find out about the business, the people, the company and how it runs, so that we can offer the best solutions. Because that’s what we offer. Solutions to problems. We encounter all kinds - slow internet; relocation; outdated equipment; need for a fast fibre connection; poor 4G coverage; expensive mobile plans; remote workers. We have a network of partners which enables us to solve most issues that might arise. We can offer options that can often save money and increase productivity. Our team comprises of experienced consultants, advisors and technicians, all of whom are focused on customer satisfaction. ca www.tele2.com.au

amputee, business owner… How did Paula Gowland spring back? BY SHARI HALL Paula and John Gowland, owners of Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery, are a beautiful couple who truly support each other. John has been there every step of the way for his wife Paula, who on a lazy afternoon in June of 2014, took the day off to enjoy a little spring cleaning around the house. Paula was excited to re-hang her freshly washed curtains in her bedroom; she climbed up on to the end of her bed, reached for the rod, then slipped and fell to the floor. Crack! It was like no other sound she’d ever heard before, yet deep in her heart, she knew with certainty, she just broke her leg. Despite being immediately rushed to the hospital, the swelling progressed so rapidly, expanding the size of her leg to a point that surgeons were unable to operate on the four fractures in her tibia. Instead, they stabilised her shattered bone with external fixation; however, after a series of complications, her fate became a belowthe-knee amputation three months later. Far from her home on the Sunshine Coast, lying in a Sydney hospital bed, under the 30 ISSUE 96

care of esteemed surgeon, Professor Munjed Al Muderis, Paula contemplated her life. A mother of three children, and devoted wife of nearly 20 years, she had some decisions to make. Having undergone a lifesaving, state-of-the-art procedure, osseo-integration, which involved inserting a titanium rod into her bone to allow placement of a prosthesis, an insidious infection now prevented healing. Twenty-four operations and eighteen months later, she made the difficult decision to completely remove her leg, allow a re-attempt of the osseo-integration, and pray. As the minutes progressed to hours, and the days went on into months, Paula searched deep inside for meaning and purpose to the recent events that had dramatically altered her life. For many, this could have been a time to give up and simply give in. But not for Paula. It was time to get out of her head and find her way back into living. “I used essential oils to create anchors. I set little goals every day to be achieved and made it my mission to talk to one other patient in the hospital positively each day to make a difference to them and to make them

smile. I read lots of inspiring books, studied aromatherapy and business strategies to give me something to focus on at all times.” After 758 days in the hospital, with perseverance, steadfast conviction, and a never-ending belief in herself and her ability to recover, she arrived home to her family in 2016, surprising her children for Christmas. It was a “very special mummy moment.” Springing back, with gratitude and an exuberance for life, two years later, she and her husband John, embarked on a new business venture, purchasing what is now known as the Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery, based in Minyama. Gathering a team of professional framers with more than fifty years of experience, they provide multiple services to a wide variety of clients and artists, such as: • Custom Framing – limited edition prints, artwork, embroidery, memorabilia • Preservation and Conservation • Canvas Stretching • Large Format Printing on Canvas and Paper

Their retail shop has art supplies, wall art and décor, as well as unique handmade ceramics and giftware. Their team is passionate about what they do, striving to connect with people and genuinely understand what they desire to achieve with their personal items and artwork. Whether it be helping customers create stunning living and work spaces, or bringing a collage of travel photos to life, for John and Paula, it is not only about framing pictures; it’s about capturing the essence of what truly matters most to people – their memories, their experiences, their lives. With pride, the team at Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery consistently provide the highest quality in workmanship, materials, and service. As if it wasn't enough to become successful entrepreneurs, John and Paula continue to positively touch the lives of others, both at home and abroad. In September 2019, as part of a twenty-four-member volunteer team, they travelled with the non-profit organisation Mission Abundance to Uganda, Africa. Having raised over $200,000, they were able to fully

fund a medical camp, a children’s fun day, and start the foundations for a new rehabilitation centre to educate, support, and care for sacrificed children. They directly impacted the lives of 100 children in their usual way, sharing their newfound appreciation for life, embracing each moment of the experience with love, strength, and grace. And here on the Coast, John and Paula previously hosted “Sip and Paint” workshops at the Gallery that encouraged aspiring artists to explore their gifts and talents in a friendly, welcoming social environment with others wishing to express themselves through art. Closer to home, they now treasure special times with their two beautiful grandchildren. It’s not every day people face a catastrophic event that forever changes their lives. For Paula, learning to overcome obstacles, endure physical pain, cope with mental stress, and construct an optimistic vision for her life, in spite of the extraordinarily traumatic circumstances, has instilled a resilience in Paula many struggle an entire lifetime to acquire. And in today’s changing

world environment, where many businesses have had to go digital or die, they continue to survive by being adaptable, flexible, and innovative in business. Soon, their website will be offering customers access to thousands of images which they can choose from to purchase, select a frame, and complete the entire order online, with delivery to their doorstep in just four weeks. Sunshine Coast Art and Framing Gallery will be the first on the coast to offer this individualised, affordable service to its clients. If there’s one lesson they’d like to share with the world after all they’ve been through, it’s a message of courage, hope, and inspiration to persevere through the tough times: “Whatever is happening in your life, be it good or bad, it will not last forever! Get up, show up, and live life to the fullest every day. Embrace change, as things always happen for a reason, and sometimes it can make your life better.” e www.artframes.com.au

TAFE QUEENSLAND

Former rally driver and successful businessman Ramon Vila Altimir is proving it’s never too late to develop your skills, after completing a Diploma of Business and Diploma of Leadership and Management through TAFE Queensland.

He may have over a decade of experience running two internationally successful businesses, but for Ramon Vila Altimir there is always an opportunity to learn more. As the owner and managing director of Spanish logistics and communication company Driving Events, and the strategy advisor and principal investor of Italian food distribution business Mammafiore, Ramon has a wealth of knowledge spanning many facets of the business world. But that hasn’t stopped the 57-year-old father-of-three from Barcelona from developing his skills. After moving to Australia with his wife and teenage sons in 2018, Ramon jumped at the chance to enrol at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, where he is currently completing a Diploma of Business and Diploma of Leadership and Management. “I have a friend from Barcelona who studied at TAFE Queensland in Hervey Bay and he and his family had a wonderful experience,” Ramon said. “I started out studying English, which was a great experience with great teachers, and from there I enrolled in the Diploma of Business. When I saw it was offered as a dual qualification with the Diploma of Leadership and Management, it seemed perfect for my situation.” Ramon spent his youth as a Nissan factory rally driver, racing across the globe for more than 20 years in prestigious competitions, including the notoriously difficult Dakar Rally. At the same time, the passionate car

32 ISSUE 96

enthusiast made a living helping people explore some of the most amazing places on the planet, by organising 4x4 adventures around the world. In 2004, Ramon decided to use his knowledge of the motor industry to start his own business dedicated to launching new international vehicles for a variety of car manufacturers, with Nissan, Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi and VW just some of the brands among his clientele. Driving Events has since grown so successful that Ramon split the company into two, establishing Driving Logistics in 2017. In 2010, Ramon also diverged into food distribution by investing in Mammafiore, which he continues to run simultaneously with Driving Events and Driving Logistics from Australia while he studies. It’s a lot to juggle, but for Ramon it’s been an incredibly valuable experience – particularly over the last few months. “You don’t realise what you will have to deal with until you are in front of any management challenges, and this applies to both your jobs and your personal life. I really enjoyed the emotional intelligence unit and learning to understand our own personal leadership style,” Ramon said. “I now have a clear strategy for both companies – the biggest challenge is to keep my teams motivated and thinking positively about the future.” Although he has already completed an international business course and training in sales in the past, Ramon said his TAFE Queensland diploma has

provided him with many valuable lessons that he wishes he knew sooner. “My goal was to learn as much as possible about what you need to know to improve and build a business,” Ramon said. “I like all the subjects we are studying because they have a direct relationship with business in reality. “From my perspective, it has helped me understand my mistakes and learn from them. But the leadership side of my studies has been fantastic too; to do business you must integrate management knowledge, but without leadership it would be very difficult to succeed in any of the other areas.” Above all else, it is the dedication and professionalism of his teachers that has impressed Ramon most – values he said they have demonstrated first hand throughout his entire experience. “The greatest value to a company is its people. My teachers were great and during the last few months in particular, they have showed incredible management and leadership. They quickly and successfully transitioned my course online, and have been delivering it with the same encouragement, empathy and energy that we have had since the beginning of the course.

WHAT INSURANCE COVER DOES A GROWING BUSINESS NEED? One of the drawbacks to owning a growing business is having more at stake. An expanding business is likely to be dealing with an ever-increasing number of individuals, getting involved in a wider range of commercial activities, even expanding into new locations.  “The cover that was sufficient when you were a sole trader or running a scrappy start-up isn’t likely to be adequate once you’re heading up a thriving enterprise.” EMPLOYERS’ LIABILITY INSURANCE When it comes time to make your first employee hire, you’ll be legally required to take out workers’ compensation insurance. You should consider taking out a form of back-up workers’ compensation insurance called employers’ liability insurance. This is because it’s possible for an employee to suffer an illness or injury that is job-related yet not covered under a standard workers’ compensation policy. Employers’ liability insurance can cover for these type illnesses, injuries and fatalities. ca Please be aware that any advice offered is General Advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. CARING FROM AFAR A family caregiver’s helping hand can only reach so far. A family caregiver living closer to a loved one can respond to a senior’s needs more quickly and easily. Trying to care from afar, either for routine responsibilities or emergency situations, can become more difficult. Overcoming the problems associated with long-distance caregiving is not impossible. Here are a few recommendations: TELEPHONE. Call your loved one to checkin. Listen carefully for any red flags. Does your loved one completely follow the conversation?

FIRST HOME BUYER – WHAT GRANTS CAN I APPLY FOR?

FIVE TOP TRAITS OF SUCCESS

HomeBuilder Grant, First Home Owner Grant, First Home Loan Deposit scheme…

With over 70 years of experience in our office, we have met so many amazing business owners from all walks of life and in a broad range of industries.

If you’re a first home buyer it can get pretty confusing, so here’s a quick overview of the Queensland grants to help get you started and to ensure you don’t miss out. HomeBuilder Grant - eligible owner-occupiers (including first home buyers) can get a grant of $25,000 to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home.

E-MAIL. For more tech-savvy seniors, e-mail can be an effective communication tool.

First Home Owner Grant (QLD) – you could get $15,000 towards buying or building your new house, unit or townhouse (valued at less than $750,000) if all purchasers have not owned a home before.

TEXT. Do you only have a few minutes to write? Need to ask one or two questions? Start by just saying “Hello”. Text messages are short sentences that can work well to dialogue.

First Home Loan Deposit Scheme – eligible first home buyers can purchase with as little as 5% deposit without the need to take out lenders mortgage insurance (LMI), which can often save thousands.

VIDEO CHAT. By using a program like Skype or Facetime, long-distance family caregivers and loved ones can chat. Being able to physically see loved ones, long-distance family caregivers can better assess how they are feeling and managing. ca

With so many options and eligibility requirements, having a mortgage broker in your corner who understands the opportunities available to you. Get the right advice early and set yourself up for success. ca Astute Financial Management Pty Ltd

Here’s our top five personality traits we see amongst our top performing clients: • Constant Improvement – they never accept they’re “done” or that they’re doing it the best. They have a natural hunger to improve – to up-level in all areas of their life and their business. • Self-Worth – they know their worth and aren’t afraid to value themselves. • Vision – they know where they’re going and how they’re going to get there. • Leadership – they embrace the mantra that great things cannot be achieved alone. 2020, A YEAR WE WON’T FORGET REIQ wrote in a recent article there’s no doubt that 2020 has been a year we won’t forget anytime soon. Covid-19 has led us down a path of economic uncertainty, and like all businesses – these challenges have forced us to pivot in ways that would once be considered unimaginable in order to stay afloat. Despite all of these challenges (and those to come), there are still some opportunities to grow your business and cement loyalty from existing clients and customers. REIQ shared the following ideas to its members: 1. Nurture the relationships with your existing clients: Keep regular updates to your clients, what is changing in your business, keep them informed on changes. 2. Social Media Power: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are the three best places for a business to start with and maintain a solid social media presence and can be a fun and practical way to engage with your clients. We Will Get Through This. Stay Safe Everyone. ca

Now in its 25th year, the business that was started by local identity Brian Curry is now in the hands of Bill Gissane and his wife Anna. “Five years ago, we bought the business for my son. MINDFUL MEETINGS … INSPIRATION,

productivity and peace of mind WITH KYM BELL // MERCURE HOTEL KAWANA WATERS

2019 was the year of burnout with the World Health Organisation officially ruling it a diagnosable condition! Add to that the unprecedented times that 2020 has thrown at us and it’s no surprise to find that face to face meetings with an attention to wellness, productivity, and fun, are highly desired! Now more than ever, personal interactions and connection, along with health, well-being and sustainability are increasingly top of mind when it comes to organising business events. Keeping people engaged and inspired during meetings or conferences can be difficult … do you know the most commented on items? I’m sure you won’t be surprised that it differs greatly between the event organiser and the event attendee! For the delegate, it’s all about the food, room temperature and comfortable seating … for the organiser it’s all about the efficiency, quality equipment, wi-fi and service!

I must confess to being a ‘passionate foodie’ and in the past two and a half years have been lucky enough to combine my love of food and travel as a tour assistant through Provence and Tuscany. It brings me great joy to be able to bring this experience to the events I have the pleasure of organising and I like nothing more than to be able to go a bit crazy with ideas to make a memorable event for our clients. After organising events for over 30 Years, I can honestly say that the success of business events starts at the very beginning … in the planning. Spending time to discuss the purpose of the event; what you are looking to achieve; then developing an agenda, menus and activities to meet these expectations and achieve the desired results. Planning is key!

THE SOLUTION IS EASIER THAN MOST PEOPLE THINK Erwin Brem from Mybusinessnow, has been working with businesses for over 25 years in helping them grow, structure and manage their people better, so their businesses grow easier. The last few months have been possibly the most challenging to navigate through and the words pivot and change just keep getting used more than ever and, in fact, it's not a bad idea. Innovation is something that businesses need to do constantly, but the simple truth about business growth and in particular getting through difficult times, is simply about doing things better than we have ever done before. MINDSET IS EVERYTHING subconscious mind and aid in the neurological rewiring of our brain. This is how we “spring back”. By having greater understanding and awareness of what’s really driving and determining who we are BEING.

As discussed last issue, mindset is a key component of the work I do with clients. It is actually one of my six FUNdamentals of wellbeing. When we are “springing back” from any challenge, the key is to essentially “break the habit of being who we are right now”, so that we can move forward and step into who we now wish to be.

My expertise is diving into the subconscious with a client and making the unconscious conscious so that (as Carl Jung says) it does not direct our life and become our fate. We get to CHOOSE who we BE and thus who we BECOME.

It is not enough to simply “think positive”- and sometimes that is not helpful.

A maximum of 10% of everything we think, feel and do derives from our conscious mind. The rest originates from our subconscious. We are essentially a sum of automated habits. How we think, feel and behave is a big collection of neurologically wired habits. So, it’s not always as simple as changing our (conscious) mind. SURPRISE PICNIC

RING REVEAL

The scene is set… a picnic for two by the water’s edge. At Cotton Tree Park on a beautiful Winters afternoon. I met Mell Balment at a business workshop. She said to me, “One day when I get engaged, you’re going to make my ring!” In a complete surprise, her partner Regan proposed the following weekend with a twinkling pear shape diamond in a box, knowing that Mell was wishing for a uniquely designed engagement ring. Talk about divine timing! The three of us then met to discuss style concepts and design ideas. As the design evolved, everyone contributed to the perfect drawing that got the tick of approval. Contacting Regan (unbeknown to Mell) when the beautiful sculpture was completed, he mentioned he was thinking of having a picnic to present the ring of her dreams. When I was having some professional photos taken of the ring with Jodie Modric Photography and Ellie from Sunshine Weddings Au, I was telling them Regan and Mell’s love story. They were both so touched, they donated their talents to capture the moment by creating the perfect picnic styling making this presentation even more delightful. It was truly an honour to create such a tremendous symbol of love and devotion. Encapsulated with a magical experience! ca

SMALL BUSINESSES TURN TO CREATIVE

WAYS TO SURVIVE DURING AND POST COVID-19 With the looming recession, which is forecast by the majority of economists, Australia’s small business owners are also looking at future customers and income and are turning to alternate currencies in numbers. “Today, more businesses and financial institutions are steadily beginning to adapt, adopt and become adept at cryptocurrency transactions. Among those are smaller businesses that have begun to include digital currencies as a payment option for customers,” says Melody Yuan of East West Bank.

Andrew Barker, Chief Marketing Officer for Qoin says, “Qoin is uniquely different to the traditional Crypto in that it is a growing community where buyers and sellers transact using the digital currency Qoin, for everyday goods and services. We have already seen close to 4000 merchants join the Qoin community over the past few months, all looking to try a different way of generating customers, income and possibly some future financial security”. With a zero-cost entry and transaction point, Qoin is proving to be of interest in a world where nothing is normal anymore. Barker continues, “Speaking with hundreds of small business owners every day, our team is seeing that fine line between their focus on staying afloat and their desire to adapt and open a new chapter for their business into the future”. Barker finishes with, “I admire and respect all of our business owners during this time and the tenacity they are showing and hope that we can open the minds and opportunities for them into the future”. ca

HOW AN AMBITIOUS ENTREPRENEUR HELPS SMALL BUSINESSES ON

the Sunshine Coast Meet Nicole de Boer, a 33 year old ambitious entrepreneur and Sunshine Coast resident. Behind her personable exterior lies a savvy businesswoman with an interesting story to tell.

“I wanted to create a fully-encompassing service that removed the risk and made overseas sourcing accessible even for the smallest of businesses,” Nicole says.

With a decade’s experience in the overseas sourcing industry, Nicole has found herself working around the world.

Her carefully assembled team takes care of everything, from negotiating with factories, creating prototypes, generating specification sheets, and even importing into Australia.

“I actually lived in China for three years, facilitating sourcing directly for some of the world’s largest brands. That was certainly an interesting time in my life,” Nicole recalls. While in China, Nicole observed many small businesses attempting to source products directly from China without any expert assistance. “Business owners had heard about the potentially huge benefits and wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to expand,” she says. Despite their best efforts, when it came down to it, the stumbling blocks often proved too high. “They were sending thousands of dollars to manufacturers they’d never even met. They experienced issues with poor product quality, delays from language barriers - even manufacturers going completely cold. It wasn’t pleasant to watch.” This experience was the inspiration that ultimately led to the creation of Sourcing Elements.

Her boutique agency, located in Noosa, now does exactly that.

HOLIDAY MEMORIES

that last a lifetime

WITH PAULA AND JOHN GOWLAND // SUNSHINE COAST ART & FRAMING GALLERY Showcase your favourite photos that may be hidden in an album! Photos and souvenirs capture the moments you enjoyed while on a holiday. While they maybe onedimensional, photos have the power to take you back to that special time and place you had with family and friends. Once they are framed, you will see them every day and the people and places you visited will bring a smile to your face each time you look at them. Some good “subjects” to have framed are people (whether they are your travelling companions or friends you made there), notable landmarks and scenic shots make a great wall décor once they are matted and framed.

You can enlarge a particularly good shot to a substantial size – one that can occupy a prominent place on your wall.

However, not all holiday memories are necessarily photos. How about that handmade Belgian lace you bought while in Europe or those seashells you gathered on your beach getaway? Instead of storing them to look at on a rainy day, get them framed! They can be displayed in a way to create a fitting keepsake. In addition to creating a dynamite way to display your memories, you need to frame

them in a way that your items will be preserved for many years to come. Issues that need to be addressed are protection from fading and other environmental hazards as well as preventing potentially harmful chemical reactions when working with metal, wood, or plastic mementos.

Elegantly framing your souvenirs and mementos can create a reminder of a pleasant journey. Bring your holiday photos and souvenirs to life and make them part of your every day life. m www.artframes.com.au

FIXED PRICE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE PLAN FOR

CONSCIOUS CO-PARENTING

property investors during COVID times WITH KYLIE CHIVERS AND LUKE FORMAN GuaRENTeed

WITH MICAELA CHOMLEY // CHOMLEY FAMILY LAW

One of the biggest risks as a property investor is the unpredictable cash flow disruption from repairs and maintenance.

We are sure that everyone would agree the Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s pockets of paradise. Under usual circumstances changeovers and play dates would be easy to arrange. With frequent changes to restrictions, the focus turns to sensible and practicable ways to co-parent during difficult times. Conscious co-parenting can be done successfully without adding strain or pressure on either parent.

Under Queensland legislation, the landlord must keep the property in a fit and working order. If you do not, you may give rise to the tenant to reduce the rent they pay, or even worse, stop paying rent altogether. They can send you a breach notice and seek compensation. They may be awarded the right to terminate the lease, leaving your property vacant. Even more serious than that is the chance the tenant or a visitor could be injured or harmed from your lack of action in getting the repairs done. You could wind up in court being sued! As landlords ourselves, we know how hard it is to find the extra money to pay when the inevitable repairs and maintenance pops up. It’s often the wrong time for you and it can feel like you are always putting your hand in your pocket. It’s normal practice for this cost to come out of the rent received, which means it can leave you short for the mortgage payment. This can be difficult to manage and you can end up accidently defaulting on your mortgage. Some people end up selling the property, which could have been a great future asset just because they are ‘over it’. Kylie and Luke Because we understand this frustration, we developed Australia’s first Fixed Price Maintenance Guarantee Plan. It is a bit like health insurance for your investment property. You pay a weekly fee and then you get coverage for the cost for general repairs and maintenance as well coverage for compliance type maintenance such as annual smoke alarm inspections.

So,don’t let yourself get ‘over it’; call us today. ca www.guaRENTeed.com.au

enable property investors to be more successful through expert property management, technology and risk guarantees. They have spent the last decade building data driven systems to create Australia’s most comprehensive Landlord Guarantee Solution.

Current arrangements, whether a parenting plan or consent order, need to be reviewed to ensure they still provide time being facilitated between carers and children amongst the various restrictions being imposed. The first step is communicating to help find a practicable solution. Communication apps have become an essential tool to successful co-parenting. Having questions focused around the children will help centre the conversation on what matters most. Routine is more important than ever. Children who have a routine set up to help guide them through the day will appreciate the familiarity during uncertain times. The Family Law Act 1975 provides that the day to day care is the responsibility of the parent with whom the child is with at the time. During the current climate, parents may find themselves spending more time with their children and adapting to new schedules.

No matter how unique your situation is during these times, we are here to work with you and build towards a better future. Contact Chomley Family Law on 07 5438 8222 for a free 15-minute consultation or book your initial 1.5 hour appointment for $199. ca www.chomleyfamilylaw.com.au

TIME FOR A BUSINESS HEALTH CHECK –

give your business its spring back BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR // HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION

As our economy is now in a recession, now is the perfect time to conduct a business ‘health check’ so you come out the other side improved and ready to go. This article focuses on your relationships with your business stakeholders so that you can make immediate improvements to your business. CLIENTS AND CUSTOMERS Client and customer loyalty is something all businesses should strive for, but if your clients’ values are misaligned with yours, conflict is inevitable. Therefore, now is the time to re-evaluate which clients you want to keep working with in the future. Re-assessing your customer base and improving your understanding of the wants and needs of your clients will help improve your marketing and sales strategies. If you have clients that aren’t on the same page as you – when the time is right, you should consider if you would like to continue to work with them when the economic situation improves. EMPLOYEES Your employees are another stakeholder to consider at this time. Your employees will always be your business’ representatives, so make sure they are working within your business expectations and where necessary provide assistance to improve their skills. With the right team, foster respectful, strong and healthy bonds and only good things will come your way. SUPPLIERS The key question to ask when reviewing your suppliers is whether or not you are getting what you need from them at a reasonable cost.

48 ISSUE 96

If you feel that your suppliers are asking too much from you or letting you down with their product quality, now is the perfect time to look for alternative options. Do your research and decide on the suppliers you want to work with for the long-term future. FINANCING Managing your finances is always a difficult task. In the current climate, it’s now more important than ever. Your budget and profit predictions for this year are likely to be down on last year, so time to re-evaluate your finances and research other funding options such as commercial rent, interest rates and banking services etc. If you haven’t reviewed these areas of your business recently, now’s the time. In summary, nothing will make your business 100% recession-proof, but reviewing these areas now will assist your business and help it survive in the tough times. m www.holmans.com.au Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. GROW ANY BUSINESS, IN ANY ENVIRONMENT!

GET BACK ON TRACK FAST, PICK ONE! The last few months have been challenging to say the least, for 69% of businesses. You could simply hang on and wait for it to pass, maybe get back to normal (if that ever happens again) or do something about it. The process is fundamentally about ReThinkingBusinessGrowth and doing things that the majority of businesses don’t. It all boils down to four simple things. 1. Attracting more clients 2. Better sales process. 3. Service experience and follow-up. 4. Cashflow It’s not just about a good product or service. Clients expect and want more, otherwise they go elsewhere. Join us at one of next free monthly introductory events to our ReThinkBusinessGrowth program. If you can’t get at least one idea that could help you business grow, it’s free! (Oh that’s right, it’s free anyway!) Email to grow@mybusinessnow.com.au to book into our next workshop. Just include join the next intro workshop and contact details in the email.

Get back on track fast! According to recent reports, 69% of businesses have been impacted financially by what we’ve all gone through the last few months. The majority of businesses have reported an 80% decline in business and that’s going to take some time to recover from, if at all. Data over the last couple of months has revealed that the average business had 21 days of cash reserves left, after that, the coffers were empty. Many businesses used the pandemic as an excuse (even after the first week) but the fact is that far too many businesses, including some of the corporates that had been effected, got to the situation they were in due to simple overspending and lack of engagement with the customers. I’ve heard the same thing from one person after another. Service is the worst it’s been for a while and part of that’s due to the lowest levels of engagement I’ve seen in some time. Businesses are starting to believe that engagement with clients means sending out a post via Facebook and then we’re done! That’s not it. The simple solution to growing businesses easier is just look at what 99% of businesses do, in order to attract and keep customers and do the opposite.

The easiest way to grow any business, regardless of what it is you do, is simply attract and then engage. That’s it, no rocket science. The first part of understanding what a business can do and how to go about doing it, is getting clear about what it does now and how it does what it does now. We call this part of the process QuckCheck360. It takes five minutes, or it could take longer, but it firstly gets you thinking about what you know and don’t know about business. It never ceases to amaze me how often you come across a reasonably successful business, that has no idea of client numbers and what they spend, let alone who their key accounts are. Clarity in business is everything. There’s not doubt, that analysis paralysis, can hold businesses back, but no understanding of what’s going on will stop it completely eventually. Below is a copy of our QuickCheck360 that gets you to honestly rate parts of the business, review where it is now and then looks at what it might take to KickStart the business and move forward quicker. If you’d like a full version copy just email info@ mybusinesssnow. com.au and request a copy of the QuickCheck.

EATING DISORDERS TAKE HOLD

during Covid-19 WITH MARK FORBES // endED

Covid-19 has been an incredibly difficult time for everyone; especially those affected by mental illness. Since March, endED has experienced a significant increase in requests for support and guidance.

both our individual recovery coaching services and support groups free of charge to anyone in need. However, at present we only have the funds to employ three recovery coaches and have a lengthy waiting list of individuals seeking our recovery coaching services.

Eating disorders thrive on isolation and secrecy and thus the social distancing and lockdown requirements have led not only to relapses for those in recovery, but also in people being newly diagnosed.

Today you have the opportunity to help a vulnerable individual break free from this insidious illness by joining the endED 150 Club. For as little as $150 a month, you will contribute to the employment of a lived experience recovery coach and quite possibly save a life.

In many cases, vulnerable individuals are isolated from family and friends and in others, they have been either unable to access treatment or have had to switch to Telehealth sessions. better time to get solar! WITH BRET DAVIS // WHOLESALE SOLAR

The Federal Government and the ATO now fund well over 70% of the total upfront cost of solar for business and nearly 50% of the upfront cost to homeowners. WHY DO YOU NEED SOLAR? We all use electricity and it is not cheap. If you install the right size solar system on the roof of your business or home, it can eliminate your power bill. THE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT With the Australian Government Renewal Energy Scheme and the ATO’s Covid-19 instant investment write-off, installing solar is a “no brainer.” As a business owner, you can get government support, regardless of whether you own or lease your premises.

All commercial tenants and landlords automatically qualify. OTHER BENEFITS OF GETTING SOLAR SAVE THE PLANET – Solar electricity is one way to power your home or business that benefits the environment. With no direct greenhouse gas emissions, the electricity is made from sunlight rather than burning fossil fuels. We will never run out of sunlight, it’s a renewable energy source. LONG LASTING – Solar system will last up to 25 years, in fact most warranties are from 10 to 25 years long. Even the first ever solar panels made now nearly 20 years ago are still working, but are just tired and the performance is not what is was when they were new LOW MAINTENANCE - Solar energy systems don’t require any

maintenance, only cleaning. If you keep your panels clean, they will perform better. Once a year is enough and it’s easier than washing your car. You can also get it done for you if you don’t want to get on the roof, for a very reasonable price. FUTURE FROOF YOUR HOME & BUSINESS Moving forward with renewable energy by getting solar allows you in the future to add batteries so you can store your solar electricity and use at night. With batteries you also are selfsufficient if ever the grid goes down, this way you can keep your fridge cold and your lights on. Batteries are getting cheaper and the technology is getting better. By getting your solar panels now with government support, you are ready to add batteries when the time is right. m www.wholesale-solar.com.au

Bret has been passionate about solar as long as he can remember. With over 30 years in management roles, Bret now follows his passion to get solar installed into as many homes and business premises as he can, at the most affordable price.

LOCAL SUCCESS

LOCAL BUDDINA CAFÉ, A SHINING EXAMPLE OF

how to spring back

Jeff and Dani were born and bred Sydneysiders: Coogee was their local area and Surf Lifesaving was their life. For 20 years they were dedicated to their building business with 10 of those seeing Dani as a Travel Agent. They met at just 17, started dating at 19 and married at 24. They are now proud parents to three daughters, and grandparents to one granddaughter and one grandson. After travelling around Australia in 2002, the Sunshine Coast was the last port of call before returning to life in Sydney. However, they fell in love with the coast instantly, and instead of returning to their Sydney life, they drove back to Sydney, packed up their things and returned to Buddina to start a new life in Queensland.

fortunate enough to have experienced operator, Nikki Kirby, come on board to assist in the set up and running of One On La Balsa. And the rest, as they say, is history. Jeff and Dani are extremely grateful for the support and love they have received from the local community over these past years. And even more particularly, the last six weeks, which has seen turbulent life changing events that have seen the locals rally above and beyond what they could have ever imagined. Dani says, “We will be forever grateful”.

An old beach house was on the market on Harbour Parade, Buddina and became theirs soon after.

As some may know, they also recently set up a shipping container in nearby Bokarina known as Bok Beach Cafe. This cafe specialises in takeaway coffee, drinks and grab and go food. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. People wanting to get out and about on the local walking tracks have shown great support to the little shipping container.

The site where the ‘One on La Balsa’ cafe now sits became available to purchase in 2005. It had always been their dream to have a cafe in this location, but with little to no experience running such a business, they weren’t exactly sure about getting it right, however they we were

Business right now is considerably different to that of the past. Sit down dining is out. Replaced by take-away meals, fruit and vegies and other groceries and even a drop of wine with the take-away meals are now all available.

Their belief is that they have to be able to quickly adapt and change the way they run the business to fit in with the Government requirements.

Dani says, “Give it a go and if it doesn’t work, move on”. Their short-term ideas are just that. Short term. Requirements are changing daily, we have to be able to adapt. Long-term goals are certainly to be able to have their customers seated back in the cafe. The take home meals have been a huge success, so the plan is definitely to continue with those when life gets back to the ‘new normal’. The past weeks have perhaps changed peoples thinking about life. Cafés and restaurants may not go back to the way they ran in the past but will potentially embrace the changes and create a ‘new normal’.

Well done Dani and Jeff for leading the way locally, for pivoting your business and showing a shining example of what is possible. We are sure that other cafés and restaurants around the coast have or will follow suit and that we will all continue to keep pivoting our businesses to suit whatever comes our way. STOP THE PRESS: I just wanted to add a very special thank you to Jeff, who on my birthday when my group arrived on a Sunday morning, with no booking, but with 15 family and friends, went out of his way to make sure we had a place to sit and to eat by setting us up over in the park; I was so impressed with your amazing service and the fact that you went way above and beyond. We will all remember that forever, thank you. e A perfect example of how One on La Balsa think outside the square.

Dani says, “I believe that we are so lucky here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast and that is really is possible for businesses to spring back from this”. www.OneOnLaBalsa.com.au

TELSTRA CALLING FOR MICROSOFT/ OFFICE 365:

the future of voice & collaboration WITH MATT STORER // TELSTRA BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY CENTRE As the business world continues to digitalise and communications technology has become the focal point for the business environment, we’re seeing more demand for cloud-based solutions that incorporate not only messaging and sharing tools but also voice and telephony capabilities. Telstra Calling for Microsoft Teams 365 is exactly this and after it’s global launch being declared, businesses across Australia and now the world are curious to see what the hype is all about. So what does the application actually do? The unique voice solution for Microsoft/Office 365 customers has all the tools needed for a seamless, modern workplace. CONFESSIONS OF A

ghostwriter

Ghostwriter Roxanne McCarty shares… Plant the seeds of your book idea now to reap the rewards

Spring is the season of new beginnings, of planting seeds that you will be able to reap and enjoy the fruits of in the future. Becoming an author is much the same as planting a fruit tree. First, you need the seeds of an idea, a passion to step up and become a changemaker by sharing your knowledge or lived experience with others around you and the wider world. Once you plant those seeds, you can’t just walk away and wait for it to happen – you need to take action. Watering your idea and nurturing it as it grows and making sure you give it lots of positive attention and sunshine and making it a priority in your life. You need to be aware that weeds will grow unexpectedly; they come in the form of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, disbelief that what you have to say is worth being read. These weeds can grow within your own mind or be blown in on the wind in the form of other people’s opinions and comments. Like any successful gardener, you need to remove any weeds quickly, but gently, so you don’t damage the already establishing roots. Be sure that you don’t walk away and leave your tree prematurely. 54 ISSUE 96

Just because a sturdy trunk is now established in the form of a solid chapter structure and there are many branches growing as the content is created, doesn’t mean the tree can fend for itself. You will need to continue to give your manuscript time and attention, so it grows and evolves into the book you had always envisaged. Failure to do this will leave you with a fruitless tree that never reaches maturity. When your physical book arrives in your hands, it’s like picking that first fruit of the season from your tree. Here, you have something that can offer to the world. Your book could be the life-changing key someone has needed to unlock a better life for themselves and their families. You were able to achieve this by seeing your seed of an idea all the way through to harvest. Being an author of a high quality book is still held in high esteem in professional circles. You are elevated to expert status and with some great marketing behind you, the potential to leverage your book to become an industry commentator, a renowned leader, a sought-after consultant and even a speaker on a global scale is limitless – you can take it as far as you want to.

The key is in the foundations – in nurturing those seeds of ideas to create a book that connects as strongly with your core message, values and beliefs as it does with your readers. When they truly resonate with you and your message, readers feel like they know you, will like you and trust the product or service that you offer – the golden trilogy of converting new clients. Imagine being a published author poised to launch your first book in early 2021! It can be a reality if you simply make a start today. If you have had some challenges with nurturing your ideas and having the time to tend to your manuscript to help it grow and evolve, you can call in a qualified ‘gardener’ like me! As a ghost-writer, I work closely with aspiring authors who have a desire to step up and become changemakers in their respective fields. You can join me on a transformational process that I like to call The Phoenix Phenomenon, where I work closely with you to uncover your strongest and most authentic message and connect this with your knowledge and lived experience to create a bespoke, engaging and inspiring

manuscript that will provide you with leverage for growth of both your business and personal profiles by accessing new income streams and even up levelling the pricing of products or services to match the credibility that comes with becoming a published author. All of this is done with limited, but highly effective, contact time, so you can invest your precious time and energy into businesses and family pursuits. Concept to completion packages allow you to be guided through your publishing journey with me as your publishing coordinator to create printed books, ebooks, audiobooks. To nurture something means give it your time, resources, love and attention. This allows for the universal laws of attraction to set in action and make things happen for you. Sometimes in business we forget to actually nurture our goals. This is vital as how else will they grow. See your goals and dreams like a baby – something you would give full attention to. This is the same to your clients. When was the last time you offered them something that would support them – that is free and inspirational. They will be requiring nurturing at this time too. COMMUNITY BUSINESS

ICKY EDIBLE BUGS…

a preferred source of protein WITH ROZ WHITE // WHITE'S IGA What began as a fascination of mine where reportedly two billion people world-wide regularly eat bugs has become an important future forward discussion around sustainability. Recently, I met with Lucas, an independent supplier of edible bugs from Byron Bay, who informed me that crickets are a nutrient dense real food, high in protein and incredibly eco-friendly as farming crickets requires very little water, food and land. Most people of western culture such as Australia, find the thought of eating whole insects a bit icky, however, cricket powder is an option which can be added to smoothies as an immune booster or consumed in cookies and crackers. In contrast, our global neighbours situated in poorer countries could find this innovative food group a preferred source of protein due to it being an affordable and accessible commodity option. The broader issue when considering future forward initiatives is the sustainability aspects as we look to building a decision-making

culture to last longer than we do with the re-use of resources, elimination of waste, reduction of pollution and building an economy which is restorative. Business and governments must come together to rethink how to repurpose in a way that makes sense. For example, in my view, governments should provide incentives for Australian packaging manufacturers to innovate in the production of eco-friendly compostable packaging solutions, at a sustainable level. Eco efficient but also economically sustainable for the manufacturing industry to produce the packaging options, supplied at a cost-effective level for business to engage and provided as an affordable option for consumers to utilise.

Everyday households can adopt easy ways to re-use materials which break down and return to nature. For decades now, White’s IGA have provided cardboard boxes for customers to take their groceries home. These repurposed receptacles ensure your groceries travel in sturdy style, can be reused again at home and cost no extra when re-used. At the end of their use cycle, they are gentle on the planet by breaking down to a natural state more readily than other alternatives. Impact is created when we act collectively even with little effort. Re-use needs to be a part of our daily conversation. ca • 2017 IGA Hall Of Fame Inductee • 2017 IGA National Community Award • 2018 IGA State Retail Excellence Store of the Year • 2018 IGA National Retail Excellence Finalist • 2019 IGA National Retail Excellence Finalist • 2018 Telstra Business Women’s Awards - Queensland Finalist • 2020 IGA State Retailer of the Year

or the frequency illusion? WITH JODY MILWARD // SOCIAL CHARLIE

I remember, years ago, a good friend of mine bought a new car. As she wasn’t particularly mechanically minded, one of the selling points was the colou r – a unique shade of orange that she liked to call “golden amber”. At least, she thought it was unique… For months after she bought her new car, she saw the same (or very similar) colored vehicles everywhere. In addition to being heartbroken about her not-so-special purchase, she was very confused where all these other golden amber vehicles had suddenly come from. To this day, she remains convinced it was a Truman Show-style conspiracy. Sadly, the reality is much less interesting. Those cars were always there; her purchase had simply made her more aware of them. This experience is actually common – it’s called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, or frequency illusion. Right now, you’re probably thinking ‘good story, but what’s it got to do with me?’

The frequency illusion shows us that once potential customers are aware of a product or service, they are more receptive to future messaging about it.

Accordingly, if you can identify potential customers who have previously interacted with your products/services/brand, and target them with follow up messaging, they are more likely to see – and respond – to it. Keep your eyes open for more about this in our next column. ca www.socialcharlie.com

Thank you for the opportunity to reminisce about our years of wonderful travel experiences. Needless to say, it’s incredibly hard to choose the best location and food, as all the memories were extremely wonderful and I don’t remember having a bad meal anywhere in the world. All the places I have been had highlights on their culinary expertise. So, I based my decision on the country that was the most consistence and flavoursome in their repertoire of dishes.

Marketing and the frequency illusion Have you ever researched a potential purchase online, then had it pop up in your Facebook feed? This is most likely an example of a business using the frequency illusion in its marketing strategy.

Just what you need on a cold winters night. They have a simple open kitchen where you see the chefs cooking the gyoza to order, Japanese ladies hand rolling these little dumplings from heaven, which can all be washed down with a pint of Sapporo. Yummmm, what amazing memories. If you ever find yourself in Kyoto on a cold winter’s night, do yourself a favour and pay a visit to Anzukko Gyoza bar. ca

HOW TO IMPROVE

your immunity WITH GARY MARTIN // LIVING VALLEY

The human body is made by design to win. We all have an amazing fighting force consisting of a military army having many regiments and divisions known as the immune system. This complex organisation consists of five diverse families of white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, the lymphatic system, the spleen, the thymus, and the bone marrow. As a powerful force, the immune system actively deals with invasions every day. White blood cells, derived from stem cells produced in the bone marrow, protect the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders. There are five basic families of white blood cells, each responsible for dealing with varying types of invaders such as allergens, toxins, bacteria, fungi, viruses and even cancer cells. B-Lymphocytes produce antibodies in response to infections, while T-Lymphocytes recognise and remove infection-causing cells. Another member of the Lymphocyte family is the Natural Killer Cell that specifically deals with viral and cancer cells. We even have a complement system, being a complex component of normal plasma, which marks dangerous antigens so they can be recognised and destroyed by white cells. When we are born, our thymus gland is the same size as the heart. As we experience exposure to bacteria, viruses, micro-organisms, pollutants, etc., the thymus gland programs the immune system to produce antibodies to counteract any future invasions by similar pathogens. Its effect in training T-Lymphocytes to fight infections and even cancer lasts for a lifetime. Once programmed, the immune system will be prepared to fight off any invader that it has previously 58 ISSUE 96

been exposed to. By puberty, most children have been exposed to a multitude of potentially harmful pathogens. Once programmed to deal with most local invaders, the thymus gland will significantly reduce in size as we age. It will, however, continue to monitor one’s exposure to new pathogens and develop programs so that the white blood cells will continually update and strengthen their defence capabilities. Those who have a strong genetic constitution and those who have diligently looked after their bodies through optimal nutrition, regular exercise, adequate hydration, regular exposure to sunlight, good sleep, temperance and a good mental attitude will be in a better position to rally a strong defence if and when they are exposed to Covid-19. Most of our population have not been all that diligent, and so Covid-19 has affected different victims with varying levels of intensity. Older people who have mostly exhausted their vital forces will find it difficult to rally a significant defence. However, it is never too late to fight back! If our immune system has been compromised through careless living, we need to take action at once. There are many things that we can do to support our immune systems and ward off any pathogenic disease, and even renew our vital forces to support optimal health for the future years. Lifestyle programs conducted at Living Valley Health Retreat are remedial and educational. Operating for 30 years in the Noosa Hinterland, this team of professionals specialises in immune boosting therapies, detoxification, optimal nutrition, exercise, hydrotherapy, emotional balance and mental wellness. a Gary Martin ND Living Valley Health Retreat www.livingvalley.com.au

MONKEY MIND MAGIC

DOES YOUR MONKEY MIND SABOTAGE YOUR

success and happiness?

BY VICKIE MAGIC

You know that voice in our head that tells us why we can’t?

I

You’re not good enough. You’re not smart enough. You’ll never succeed. Everyone else is better than you. You always... You never... Hopeless... Useless... You’re just not lucky. You’re just not this. You’re just not that. Give up. Inset your monkey mind comment here The truth is that sometimes people tell us that we have to just ignore the voices. Or that we should push them away, or fight against them... BUT THAT DOESN'T WORK. I work with everyday individuals who are struggling with the monkey mind. They are looking for peace, success, abundance, happiness, they’ve tried everything and they just don’t know how to achieve it. The reason I feel so much passion for this work and for these people is that I used to be exactly the same. I used to truly believe the voices in my head that told me I wasn’t worthy, that told me why I couldn’t. I personally ate my pain, what do you do? 60 ISSUE 96

It's imperative we work on this, otherwise it can result in addiction, anxiety, obesity, stress, fear, depression, OR WORSE. The results of us believing these voices in our head is destruction in some way of our future or even our present. Enough is enough. That’s why I developed this framework, MONKEY MIND MAKEOVER, which helps us break free from the Monkey Mind Madness by giving us the seven superpowers to tame the monkey and finally live that peaceful, successful, happy life that I truly believe we all desire and all deserve.

It’s unmet expectation that causes us upset and robs us of our joy. The

power of surrender isn’t about

surrendering or giving in, it’s about letting go of control. I don’t know about you, but this ran the show for me, I had to be in control, even of the uncontrollable. In every moment of our lives we have choice, even if and even when we think that the choices are out of our control. For example, right now with Covid-19, we still do have the

superpower of choice to choose what we make things mean. Learning and mastering this superpower is gold.

The power of love teaches us how to love ourselves more, how to love others more and leads to others loving us more. It’s truly incredible the difference this can make.

The power of courage is about stepping into our authenticity fully, it’s about finally giving up on what others think of us and being fully committed to worrying only about living into the version of us that we care about.

The power of belief is about truly uncovering the lies within our current beliefs, the ones that do not serve us.

The power of gratitude is about truly learning to appreciate what we have and to manifest what we want for ourselves and our lives. It’s about looking for what’s right instead of what’s wrong, we are wired from birth to be four times more likely to look for what’s wrong. To rewire our brains, we have to do the work.

Did you know that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone systems can reduce communication costs by up to 80%? What would that look like for your business cash flow? It may seem daunting at first, but moving away from your traditional telco could be one of the best decisions you make in 2020, particularly on the Sunshine Coast. We’re getting access to even stronger Internet (through the sub-marine cable) improving call quality, with service beyond what traditional telcos can provide. It’s not just fast, locally based service, you will have unlimited scalability as you’re not restricted by the number of lines available within a PBX and you can even consolidate branches! Making International calls? No problem! Distance and location make no difference to a VoIP system, if you both have internet connection, communication is possible. While massive savings and scalability are leading the adoption charge, it’s the extra features of VoIP phone systems winning hearts across the Coast;

• Simultaneous ringing of office and mobile phones to answer anywhere. • Video conferencing with live exchange of data files during the video call. • Cross reference incoming calls with a CRM for Account lookups (think diverting support calls to Accounts if overdues are impeding service). • Forwarding, waiting and voicemail included, recording optional. • Integration with online systems such as secure entry to premises. • Locally based support is the end of lengthy delays. If your team is working remotely for an undetermined period of time; a low cost and flexible phone solution could be the ticket to take you into 2021. Our VoIP phone systems are an essential tool to continue operations through unknown waters and an ever-growing request from our customers. AUTHOR SUPPORT SERVICES

WRITING A BOOK IS A POPULAR STRATEGY

for small business owners WITH ALEX FULLERTON // AUTHOR SUPPORT SERVICES

However, when you sit down to do it, it can be trickier than it first appears. After fourteen years as a self-publishing consultant with Author Support Services on the Sunshine Coast, I can say yes, writing a book is a big project. It takes a certain amount of time and dedication, and let’s be honest, a certain amount of money to write, publish and promote a book. So, if you are going to commit to it, you want to be sure you will get a good return on your investment, just as with any other business project.

inspirational, but remember to also invite them to learn more from you in a future working relationship.

One of the first questions we ask is WHY you are writing the book. What do you hope it will bring to your business? Is it to raise your profile, or are you writing to bring interest to a specific area? Or is it a bit of both, as it is for most businesspeople? A well written book will certainly raise your profile, but I always demand that our books work harder for you.

For instance, we could use a book format that includes the reader in the book, maybe through reflection, exercises, activities or journaling. This allows your expertise to shine and gives the reader a chance to try some of your strategies in the privacy of their own home. Then if they feel connected, they can contact you and join other programs, online or face to face.

Strategise WHO you want to read your book, and HOW you are going to add real value for your readers. Offer your reader something powerful and

a level of trust so they want to deepen their working relationship with you. Now that’s a project worth doing! A little planning goes a long way in book writing, but if you feel you need a little help, a good editor can always help unravel what you have created into the shape you envisaged.

can cause anxiety and stress WITH SPIRI BUHAGIAR // RAPID MINDSET THERAPIES

Attitude, support, diet, mental state and health all play a part in achieving a healthy pregnancy.

For many, becoming parents is fraught with stress. In fact, many couples who are trying to conceive have been told that there is nothing medically hindering this process. This fact alone can cause further anxiety and stress to the couple trying to conceive. Over the past year I have worked with several couples, together and independently, to assist them with making their dream a reality. To date, we have had success in 30% of those clients. The method I use is to work with the clients (both partners) utilizing CBT, RTT, Hypnotherapy and neuro-science – all these modalities work with the unconscious mind and the analytical mind. I also review diet, attitude, and look at complimentary modalities such as acupuncture to ensure that the body and mind are working collectively. By working with the unconscious mind, we can get to the ROOT cause as to why the body is not prepped for pregnancy. The unconscious mind is the keeper of all your emotions and memories, additionally its vital

role is to function your body, so it makes sense to access this part of the individual to try and uncover WHY pregnancy is not occurring. Once we understand the programming in the unconscious mind, we can then create a recording to re-wire those limiting beliefs that may be stopping the couple from conceiving. The unconscious mind is like your personal internal computer -through audio recordings and reframing unconscious limiting beliefs can be over-ridden by inputting new beneficial beliefs in. Many of us know or have heard of someone who failed to fall pregnant, adopted a child then fell pregnant after years of trying – this is not an uncommon occurrence.

If you have tried most everything else, why not try accessing the unconscious mind to see if it has a reason for the state of play? Quite often, I have uncovered limited beliefs that made perfect sense to the individual once they were released from the mind and made aware of them.

After working with hundreds of individuals to help them be the best version of themselves Spiri

Remember, your unconscious mind is like the programs running in the back of a computer, the programs are synapses that have been fired and wired so many times they are now a set pattern of programming. Reprogramming does take time, but it certainly can work. If you would like to understand more, listen to Dr. Joe Dispenza’s TED talk on synapses – that’s what we will be working with, when we work with you. ca

WHEN SOMEONE VISITS YOUR WEBSITE,

engage with them before they leave WITH ANTHONY VYNER //

It's now easier than ever! What can we do to help engage the uses on our website? Well, with live chat, there's a tool that is most common in a lot of live chat systems which is called “proactive messages. A proactive message pops up and displays to a user who is on the website when they meet a certain amount of criteria. That could be as simple as a person landing on your website, or a person scrolling down the page. Proactive messaging is quite simple to set up and I recommend it's one of the first steps that you should take when you add live chat on your site. I want to briefly go over three different proactive messages that you can use on your website today!

The Welcome Message This is the most important message on your website. It is the first real engaging piece of content that is seen. My tip for a welcome message is to be sincere and human. I like to start my welcome message with a question, compliment or beneficial information. A well written welcome message could instigate

The Skip The Form message This is one of my favourites because I am all for live chat over forms any day. The ordinary contact form has about an 80% abandonment rate, but live chat it isn't as high. The skip the form proactive message lets my user know that the form is available. However, they can get the question answered now if they speak to a real human. There is a higher chance the user will talk to you over live chat rather than filling in the form. a conversation straight away, or at least, engage a user enough to stay on the website.

High Intent Message This is placed on a particular product or pricing page. Somewhere there is a higher possibility of a user taking the next step to work with you or buy your product. When creating a proactive message for high intent pages, you want to help the user make a decision. I like to use a question, "Is there anything I can help you with today?" These types of proactive messages can help get a lead over the line or at least start engaging with you so you can help them answer their questions or concerns.

Proactive messages are a powerful tool in the arsenal of live chat. I've only highlighted a few, but there are so many inventive ways that you can utilise them on your website. Proactive messaging is real, it's personal and it doesn't take a lot of effort on your behalf to do. PS. Why not add a proactive message to the checkout page? Tell the customer you're thankful for their purchase. m www.convodojo.com

In the short time that I have been here, I’ve been blown away by the overwhelming sense of community and comradery that this little township has to offer. In the midst of a beautiful backdrop setting of both Mt Coolum and Marcoola beach, the region truly imbibes the great Australian spirit I have come to know and love.

About seven years ago, I encountered a significant crossroad in my very early career as a dentist. As a UK-born graduate from Barts and The London School of Medicine & Dentistry, I realised very quickly that the dental industry in the UK was set up in such a way that I was not able to comfortably and easily provide my patients with the high level of care that I truly desired, and what I felt patients justly deserved. Deciding to follow my intuition, I arrived in Australia in 2013 with no job and nowhere to live. I followed the road to the many opportunities that laid ahead. My journey took me through the majority of the east coast of the country, starting initially in Melbourne and eventually ending up here on the Sunshine Coast.

To say that my experience has been a life-changing one would be an understatement – not only has my journey allowed me to finally deliver the level of care and treatment in my work that I’ve always desired, but it has brought me to what I believe to be one of the most beautiful parts of

I am very grateful for all that I get to experience and enjoy since making the move, and my own personal voyage has showed me that our intuition can guide us to a greater destination… all we have to do is trust it a little more. ca www.marcooladental.com.au

TELL US SOMETHING THAT WE

don't know about you!! People that have been following Simon Scott for over 10 years on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, partly because he is a multi-award winning building designer based on the Sunshine Coast and owner and principal designer at SSB Design Studio based on the Sunshine Coast, and partly because of his inspiring story. With Covid-19, iso going on and spending more time than usual in my office, Simon thought now seemed like a good time to give the public a look inside. If you’re interested to learn about Simon and how someone who lives with something that we may consider impossible for ourselves, can defy the odds and become successful, then read on.

You may be saying, this is no different to any other person in the building design space… and that’s absolutely true! So, what makes me want to share something that you may not know about me? When I started my practice back 11 years ago I had absolutely no business contacts in Australia, just close family. I wondered how I was going to structure the business, taking into account one specific part of me, that I can’t ever change. This is what you do not know about me! (Unless you are already a client, or already know me) And that is… I WAS BORN PROFOUNDLY DEAF!

Simon says, “Let start with a quick ‘who am I really?’”

However, I’ve never once let this become a handicap for me or get in my way. I forged ahead, going to networking groups and literally walking into real estate agents, lawyers, mortgage brokers and many other B2B opportunities and giving them leaflets. After a year of hard slog, I began to see the fruits of my actions into what has become my amazing Australian Building Design journey. There are huge challenges being in a virtually silent world.

“Well, I am 45 and have been in architecture (Internationally) and building design (Australia) sectors since leaving university in England, so around 23 years! During that time, I have worked with top 10 architecture practices in London and for nearly 11 years here on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, creating uniquely designed homes and renovations for clients.

There is always an upside if you are prepared to stay positive and believe in yourself! You are by now probably thinking, ‘If you are profoundly deaf, how do you interact?’ Great question, the answer is that I can lipread conversations from 30 meters so face to face is absolutely no issue and larger meetings are covered by my PA Sue (who is also my mother), who scribes for me where necessary.

We won’t bore you too much with the stuff about his upbringing, growing up etc, but we will throw out a few things, so that you might understand who he is and what his dreams are for himself and his clients.

68 ISSUE 96

By the way, I have never signed and shouting or talking very, very slowly at me doesn’t actually work as it distorts the mouth, but I always appreciate the gesture and it doesn’t last for long once people get comfortable chatting with me. I concentrate probably more than a hearing person when I am with clients and the best compliment I often receive is

‘I so appreciate how you have listened to my ideas and plans.’ I always thank people for this statement and makes me feel very humble… with no hearing ears required! Sue my PA has NEVER joined me at a first meeting with a new client. Why? I need to make that first meeting the most important of all. It is often well into the meeting when I mention, “Oh! By the way you may have noticed that I wear a hearing aid, so please if I ask you to repeat your last statement that I was not absolutely clear on, I hope you can understand.” The reaction is usually one of the following: I actually didn’t notice! I thought you had a cold (as my voice can sound a bit like that!) I did notice and thank you for being upfront and explaining the best way to communicate with you. I don’t care, as long as you are the best person for our design project.

Reality is that I am deaf, but I am most definitely not daft! My mum made a badge for me saying Deaf Not Daft when I was about five to encourage me to interact, as people always used to speak over my head and not to me. I came to understand as I grew up that deafness is a hidden disability unlike sight impairment by wearing glasses that are immediately visible and I appreciate how hard it can be for those in a hearing world and maybe never come across someone who is deaf.

I have also created a FB page called www. facebook.com/groups/1165501430290907

This is how I have built up a highly successful building design practice with fantastic reviews and recommendations from clients. You can see them at www. ssbdstudio.com.au/reviews I call it “DEAF HIP” Determination Excellence Ability Fearlessness Honesty Integrity Professionalism I am writing a book about my journey but that will not be ready for a few years as there is so much more for me to achieve and share. I have, although, produced a Design Book which I am currently upgrading and rewriting

The reason I created this page was so people are able to ask questions about all things property in a forum that has now within its midst, professionals from all property sector. I would like to offer you the opportunity to join this group and assist me in growing it to cover even more educational material for members. You can join for FREE.

YOUTH WORKERS NEEDED

to cope with rising demand

TAFE Queensland Youth and Community Work Teacher Pav Cosmatos has said more youth workers are needed to deal with the rising number of young people being impacted by mental health and welfare issues. Data produced by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Skills and Employment in 2019 had already forecasted a massive 24.3 per cent increase in employment opportunities for social and welfare professionals by 2024; however this figure is anticipated to grow as the social and economic toll of Covid-19 is felt across the country. Pav said while the service youth workers provide was rarely highlighted among the general public, their contribution makes a huge difference in the lives of the people they work with.

“Young people are our future, so we need to invest our energies in them so they can have a voice,” Pav said. “Today depression and anxiety are common among young people and having those challenges can make a big difference to how a person is going to survive on many levels. At the junction of their lives when they are going through the difficult adolescent stage, people get overwhelmed. It’s a stage where people can easily be led astray, and if that happens, the consequences can impact their adult life. “In youth work, we provide programs that enhance the potential of a young person. It’s about providing opportunities for young

70 ISSUE 96

people and advocating for them in society; you’re providing a safe place for people to come to so they can prosper.” Pav said there were a range of factors behind the growing demand for youth workers, with depression, family breakdown, loneliness, housing and unemployment impacting many young people. Results from the Australian Lonely Survey found that Australians aged 16 to 25 reported the highest levels of loneliness, depression symptoms and social interaction anxiety, while an Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth report published in 2018 found 15.4 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 experienced high or very high psychological distress.

“While the rise of social media has revolutionised the way people communicate and made it easier than ever to keep in contact, it seems it’s becoming harder for people to truly connect, and young people are being hit the hardest,” Pav said. Pav teaches the Diploma of Youth Work at TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, where he educates his students on how to work effectively within a youth work context. He also provides the opportunity for his students to get hands-on with a ‘community classroom’, partnering with local schools or community centres so they can apply what they’ve learned in a real setting. “By providing this practical experience where our students are able to interact with youth during their studies, we’re ensuring they go into the service confident and equipped with

the skills they need to make a difference in young lives,” he said. “These practical opportunities help our students understand the importance of gaining trust and building rapport, and we’re then able to use their experience to teach them the fundamentals of youth work, like program planning, case management and community development.” Pav said it takes a very special person to pursue a career in youth work, with many of his students having a lived experienced themselves that inspired them to help others; however those in the industry have diverse backgrounds, ages, cultures and genders. “Youth workers need to be highly empathetic and supportive people that can provide a positive role models for young people while maintaining their own personal care,” Pav said. “There’s no denying it can be a tough gig, but it’s incredibly rewarding, and it can change lives. I’ve seen so many people turn their lives around in this course and go from lacking confidence to being leaders.”

If you’re empathetic and patient and want to help young people overcome the challenges life has thrown at them to reach their full potential, a career in youth work could be your calling. REVIVE, REGENERATE

and recalibrate

WITH BRAD AND BEC // ZEN DEN FLOATHOUSE & CAFE Has the Covid-19 pandemic caused you to become unsettled and anxious? If so, then you are not alone. It is a time where, as a community, we have been exposed to the highest levels of uncertainty and unpredictability that we have known. Our minds are biologically wired to have stability and routine. When we are faced with uncertain times like this, it is important to know how to settle and reset our minds. If we ignore this, we run the risk of increasing our stress levels to a chronic state, losing our ability to focus, and finding that we can no longer sleep. This obviously has implications for our mental health and anxiety levels. If we do not get these under control, we run a very real risk of becoming depressed, anxious, and burnt out. It is so important to take some time for yourself. The benefits of this is not only for yourself, but to enhance the relationships with your partner, your family, and your friends. One of the most effective ways to take control is through mindfulness and meditation. This can deepen the

most important relationship you have – the one with yourself. Many people think that mindfulness or meditation can only be done sitting on a cushion in a darken room. Nothing could be further from the truth. Meditation or mindfulness can be performed anywhere in a variety of conditions. Walking in nature, lying on the beach, patting your pet, watering the garden, deep breathing exercises, the list is endless. By using mindfulness or meditation we can train our brains to pause, relax, become more aware of the positive things around us, and to reset. At Zen Den Float and Wellness at Mooloolaba, we provide an incredible easy platform for you

to be mindful or practice some form of meditation. Whether this be in one of our amazing relaxing floatation pods, serenity in our light therapy, relaxing with our sound therapy, zoning out on our quantum chakra mats, or simply taking time for yourself enjoying a range of massages including relaxation, remedial, aromatherapy, and hotrock therapy. The choice is yours. You will be guaranteed to leave our centre revived, regenerated, and recalibrated. As a special offer to Matter’s Magazine readers, we are offering a one hour float session and 30 minute light therapy treatment for only $90. ca www.zendenfloathouse.com.au

Brad and Bec are Sunshine Coast locals; they are dedicated to providing the Sunshine Coast (and beyond) with a unique and affordable experience in natural relaxation and wellness. SPLASHEO

THIS TYPE OF VIDEO GETS

more engagement WITH GIDEON SHALWICK // SPLASHEO

Attention: If you are interested in growing your business using digital marketing, please read this now… This morning, I was scrolling through all my social media feeds. And there was one thing that immediately stood out to me; some content pieces magically grabbed my attention, while others did not grab me at all and I just kept on scrolling right past them!

I’m talking about well-crafted videos, with a “scroll-stopping” headline at the top, the video content in the middle, and captions at the bottom, like you can see in the image.

Combined together, these three factors massively add to the engagement level of your videos. Which in turn can help you drive more traffic and sales to your business.

You may have seen these kind of videos from popular outlets like Buzzfeed, TED talks or recent online celebs like Gary Vaynerchuk. And it’s taking the social media world by storm.

A friend of mine, Marcus Sheridan who runs IMPACT, the popular global content marketing brand, said he got a 300% increase by simply using this style of video. And this is just one of many cases. There’s a reason why folks like Gary Vaynerchuk use it. Simply put, it works!

What magical power did some of these content pieces possess that hypnotised me so thoroughly and got me to actually stop and consume it? And heaven forbid, to even leave a comment and share it with my friends?

Why do they work so well? Three reasons:

Video. Yup, that’s right. But not just ANY kind of video.

3. The captions at the bottom engages you like crazy.

1. The video headline grabs your attention, 2. The visual footage draws you in, and...

If you’re also interested in getting your videos into this highly engaging format, you can currently get your first four videos done for FREE at www.splasheo.com. ca www.splasheo.com

Gideon loves helping business owners get their message out to the right people, at the right time, using the power of social video. His company, Splasheo, makes it easy to create super engaging videos, ready for social media domination!

NUMBER BUSINESS

DREAMING...

of a better life

BY TED FITZGERALD

As our indigenous people know better than anyone, this country has had over 200 years of ‘re-settlement’ by people from other countries. Usually dreaming of a better life. Today the big change is from which part of the world are the new ‘settlers’ coming? For the first 150 years, Australia’s new settlers came from Britain and Ireland. After the devastation of the Second World War, most new settlers were from European countries, particularly those around the Mediterranean, namely Italy, Greece, Malta and what was then Yugoslavia.

In the last 10 to 20 years the main source of new settlers has been from neighbouring countries. Importantly, these latest settlers come from countries with profoundly different cultures, languages and religions. In 2016, the figures show 30% of all Australians have parents who were born overseas.

INCREASE IN NUMBER OF SUNSHINE COAST AND NOOSA RESIDENTS BY COUNTRIES OF BIRTH 2006-16 USA & Canada: 1,155

Nationally, the largest numbers of new settlers are arriving from India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, followed by China, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong. Between 2006 and 2016 almost 850,000 new settlers came from these countries and when Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand are included, it adds to over 1,100,000. Compare this to 74,151 from the UK and Ireland and a sharp decline in people coming from Europe. As the chart illustrates, on Sunshine Coast the largest increase of overseas settlers in the same period was from

traditional sources, namely the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, the USA and Canada. Also interesting is the large number of settlers from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Unlike other areas around Australia, new settlers from China, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong have not come to the Coast in large numbers. However, when the rate of increase of new settlers to the Coast from these areas is studied, it points to a faster increase in new settlers from Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iraq and Iran. So the trend appears to be beginning. My guess is that as our regional economy grows and new infrastructure like the highspeed fibre optic cable linking the Coast to Greater Asia comes online, we will see many new settlers from neighbouring countries heading North. c
