editor's NOTE So, I was laying in bed a few weeks back thinking, thinking about life, the magazine and thinking about how we had made the heart breaking decision to put it on hold until the September issue (at least) pending what was happening with Covid-19. I was just laying there and then I looked up. On the wall in my room is this picture...
“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass. Life is about dancing in the rain.”
that I had to dance and dance hard, I knew that I had to lead the dance, and so here it is, our ‘Dancing in the rain issue’. Thank you for your support, please, please, please share this issue on your social media, please, please, please share this issue to your data base, in every which way you can. The more you share it, the more we can get the message out there to the Sunshine Coast to support each other and TO DANCE IN THE RAIN.
COMPETITION TIME
And in that moment, something clicked inside my head and it said, “Vickie, you are waiting for the storm to pass, that is NOT who you are, you need to start dancing. So that day, I started to think, I started to ask myself the question, “What would dancing in the rain look like? What would dancing in the rain feel like? What would I do, if I was to dance in the rain?” And in that moment, I knew that I could not just sit back and wait for the storm to pass, I knew

ARE YOU
dancing in the rain? BY VICKIE MAGIC
It most certainly has been an interesting time of late. The world has changed in so many ways. Do you believe, like many, that this is a wake-up call?
I truly believe that the benefits from this are going to be TENFOLD, but I also believe that in order for us to really get that WAKE-UP CALL, we must acknowledge this for ourselves and make a decision to make the changes that we know we need to make.
Do you believe, like many, that the universe (or God) or whatever you believe, is saying, “FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS.
How about you personally?
To stop being so busy, to slow down, to spend more time with your family, spend more time on WHAT MATTERS?
Your business?
I do. I truly believe that COVID-19 is going to be something we look back at like September 11, The Twin Towers, like a World War, something that we talk about life before and after.
6 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
How have things changed for you? Did you lose your job? Money?
What is something that MATTERS more to you now, more than ever before? So far, has it been as bad as you anticipated it would be? Maybe you are still in the thick of it?
I have even heard a few say, “Can we stay in COVID mode, long term, I like this slower pace”. Maybe you are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel? It is interesting how resilient we can be, when put to the test. It is interesting how we can get through so much more than we think. For some of us, our fear was linked to not knowing what would happen. Those of us that needed to be in control of everything. We no longer had control of anything. That is pretty scary, that is pretty difficult, that is pretty different. Honestly, I personally have been a control freak, in the past I had to be in control of every little thing, I didn’t trust anyone to do anything properly, so pretty much had to take over most of the doing, this made Vickie a very busy person, so much so that overwhelm, stress, worry stepped in, how on earth would I get it all done? How on earth would I get everything finished, to the level and quality that I HAD to have. I will tell you how. I had to learn to let go of the control, I had to learn something that I call imperfect perfection, that was the only way forward. Progress without perfection. Progress without complete control. It was not an easy lesson to learn, but because of this I have been able to let go of the control of having to KNOW exactly what the future would hold. It’s kind of funny when you think about it, even before Covid19,
we actually still had no idea about what our future held, and that’s the truth, we had no idea about whether we would be successful, not successful, rich, poor, live or die, and that’s the truth. Nothing has changed actually in that department, we still have no idea, we still have no real control.
The only thing we actually do have control over is WHAT WE THINK. Now you may be reading this and think, “I don’t always feel that I have control over how I think”. Well guess what, we all DO actually have control over what we think, sometimes we just need to learn HOW. HOW to take that control back.
you do? How would you feel?
new decision look like for you?
Fear is a future stealer.
Here are a few things that we could do. We could:
Fear is a happiness taker. Fear is in reality just thought, just thought, there is actually no such thing.
Look for ways that we can pivot.
Fear is actually just: False Evidence Appearing Real
Look for ways that we can prepare for a new future. Look for ways that we can brainstorm towards change.
Once we realise that the things we fear are actually not real, that the things we fear are not actually happening, once we train ourselves to step back and witness the thought, everything changes. We begin to see that we have a CHOICE, we have the superpower of CHOICE, we can, in any given moment, make a different CHOICE, a CHOICE that will serve us better than the current CHOICE that’s leaving us feeling UPSET, FEARFUL, WORRIED, STRESSED or whatever else.
How to master the monkey mind. That bloody monkey mind takes over and it tries to steer us in the opposite direction to where we want to go. It tries to convince us to WAIT FOR THE STORM TO PASS, to play small, to sit back and watch our life go past, it tries to convince us that we have to wait, that we are not good enough, not worthy, not this and not the other thing. I call BULLCRAP, I say, “DANCE IN THE RAIN,” I say “It’s your time to shine, it’s your time to dance, it’s your time to take control.” Honestly what would that mean for you?
So, what would DANCING IN THE RAIN look like to you?

Look for ways that we can reinvent.
Learning the superpower of choice is a life changing superpower, one that I for one do not take for granted. I can now choose, in any given moment to flip a thought on it’s head and make another choice. You can too.
Look for ways that we can influence others towards dancing too. Look for ways to stay focused on the end prize. Look for ways to focus on what MATTERS. Look for ways to remind ourselves of what we do have. Look for ways to be grateful. Remind ourselves that gratitude is a feeling not a word. When you say, “I am grateful for…”, remember to feel that gratitude, otherwise it’s just lip service. Look for ways to lead not follow. Look for ways to level up. Look for ways to train ourselves to do more, be more. Look for ways to take action. Look for ways to become a DOER. Look for ways to DANCE IN THE RAIN, DAILY. pivot, pivot, pivot... BY VICKIE MAGIC
Are you planning your pivot?
We can’t just sit back and wait for clients to knock on our door.
How could you pivot your business?
That time has passed.
What would you need to do?
The time now is all about pivoting, all about creation, all about innovation.
Why do you need to? What is possible for you? Is it time for you to reinvent?
8 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
How are you pivoting? How are you innovating? How are you creating?
Let’s have a look at you, and what you can do.
Well to be honest I think it all comes down to the POWER OF THE MIND. It most definitely changes everything. Whatever you focus your attention to is what you get more of.
This isn’t about positive thinking – The POWER OF THE MIND is about much more than that. To me, positive thinking is looking at your garden, putting your hands over your eyes and saying, “No weeds, no weeds”, making an affirmation that your garden has no weeds and that no weeds will ever come. To be honest I don’t see how that can ever be reality. The POWER OF THE MIND is very different to that, it’s about looking at your garden and seeing the beautiful flowers, the lush green grass, smelling the gorgeous scents of the roses, and truly appreciating that gorgeous amazing garden. Then you spot a weed and say to yourself, “Oh look a weed, I need that gone”, and you simply walk over, bend down and pull it out. There is no need to talk about it, no need to tell anyone who will listen about it, there is no need to sit down and have a three hour discussion about the weed and how annoying it is and how it is destroying your garden, how your garden will never be the same because of this stupid weed, how the weed has wrecked everything. There is no need to tell everyone who will listen how much you hate the weed, and how because of this weed you now won’t be able to have the garden of your dreams, all because of this weed, it’s the weed’s fault, damn weed! If it wasn’t for this one weed everything would be perfect.
Here’s the truth, if you water the rest of the garden, move the weed to the corner, don’t water it, don’t talk about it, don’t focus any energy towards it, you will hardly notice it. Yes of course it’s still there, but it’s no longer taking over, no longer standing out like a sore thumb, no longer the focus of your attention, of your garden. It’s not big enough to destroy your garden, it’s not going to take over the world, unless of course you let it. (By watering it, talking about it, pointing it out) “Look at this weed, I can’t get rid of it, I hate it, what do you think about this weed, how can I get rid of it, what would you do about it, have you ever seen a weed so horrible”, blah blah blah, focus focus focus and then all of a sudden you don’t see the beauty in the rest of the garden, it’s like it just disappeared before your very eyes. And so even when someone points out the weed to you, all you have to say is, “Oh that little tiny weed, I hardly see that anymore, look at these beautiful flowers, smell this beautiful rose, have you ever smelt anything quite so adorable. Look at the red one, look at the pink one, did you see that yellow one, isn’t this white one the most beautiful rose you have ever seen. Weed, what weed, I hardly see it anymore.” So, when we are talking about pivoting our businesses, it’s the same thing, its about focusing on what we want, it’s about focusing on where we are going, focusing and what’s working, focusing on the good things, the great things and doing more and more and more of those.
We must START PIVOTING if we HAVEN’T ALREADY. Let’s do the PIVOT DANCE? Ask yourself, your clients, your friends, your family, your team,
Nope the POWER OF THE MIND, is just about saying, “Oh a weed, I’ll just pull this sucker out as quickly as possible.”
“HOW CAN WE PIVOT?”
Oh, and sometimes the truth is there are weeds that you simply can’t pull out, you simply can’t get rid of, they are there to stay, what do you do about those weeds?
DO THAT THING.
Listen to what everyone says, one person will come up with something amazing. f

THE ROAD TO COVID-19 RECOVERY
I . T. M AT T E R S
Digital transformation WITH JONATHAN ALLEN
At the start of 2020 I am sure you, as well as I, was certainly not expecting that we would be dealing with a global pandemic. It has certainly had an unprecedented impact on all manners of our lives but particularly how we conduct business now and in the future. There are many pressures on business, particularly with the change in the new economic environment such as: • Pivoting or adapting products and services • Adapting workspaces and procedures to meet legislative requirements • Increased sanitation requirements, just to name a few. All these things can have a significant toll on overheads in a time that is already particularly challenging. Digital transformation can play a pivotal role in solving many of these challenges and provide a mechanism to reduce operational overheads, increase efficiency and ultimately thrive on the road to recovery. ALTERNATE REVENUE STREAMS – Considering different approaches for your industry to simplify your customers’ buying experience. Can your product be sold online? Or can you deliver or automate a manufacturing process?
MIGRATION FROM PAPER TO DIGITAL – Adopting paperless systems to reduce handling of documents in shared environments. Digital archiving and document signing solutions for example and automated payment systems to reduce the need to handle cash and cheques. COMMUNICATION – Adopting flexible modern communication solutions such as collaboration platforms that allow your teams and customers to meet, chat and collaborate with documents and files efficiently without the need to be in confined meeting areas or boardrooms. SAFETY AUTOMATION – Using technology to create safe spaces for employees and customers. Automating temperature checking using cameras on entry to an office or venue for example can simplify the compliance overhead and validate the safety of the business for its customers. While many of these things are not new concepts, the rapid pace and evolution of the virus and its management ongoing has pressed the fast-forward button on the adoption of new strategies and ways to efficiently manage and conduct business now and into the future. m www.secureaccess.com.au
OPTIMIZING WORK FROM HOME – New distancing regulations and hygiene management will have a material impact on the affordability and efficiency of accommodating staff in commercial premises in the future. Shifting technology systems to cloud and online platforms and optimizing their design to enable a more flexible and productive work force will become significantly more effective as a long-term strategy to manage fixed overheads.

Covid-19 positive nurse
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING; HER BATTLE ARMOUR BY CALLUM GORDON
Life on The Sunshine Coast and indeed Australia, is somewhat protected from Covid-19, we have had nowhere near the numbers of the rest of world. On the other side of the world, in London, Sunshine Coaster, Tammy Pluck, has just fought one of the toughest battles of her life, against this deadly virus. As a nurse, Tammy was all too familiar with the stories of many front-line Covid-19 nurses and health care professionals as they battled an invisible enemy around the world. Eighteen months ago, life was ‘normal’, families could play, large gatherings were allowed and job expos were a monthly occurrence. It was a job expo, in fact, that changed Sunshine Coast nurse, Tammy Pluck’s life. Pursuing a country change after 20 years in the health industry in Australia, Tammy and her family packed up their life and headed to England, having absolutely no idea what was ahead for them. According to the Government, of the United Kingdom, at the time of publication of this issue, the UK currently had one of the highest rates of infection of Covid-19, with close to a million tests being conducted, 157,000 cases testing positive and 21,000 people sadly losing their life. Whilst the virus was rapidly
12 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
spreading throughout England, the ward in which Tammy was working was quickly established as a Covid-19 positive ward. Despite the rate of infection spreading too fast for government officials to monitor, travel to other countries was still permitted and saw Tammy and her family take a trip to Malta, however, remaining vigilant and aware. As the situation worsened in the United Kingdom, the conversation around many dining tables of healthcare workers was all too familiar. “What if I bring this virus home to my family”. For many workers this was a reality that would come true, in Tammy’s family, her husband and eldest daughter were both high risk due to compromised immune systems. Making the decision to become a boarder in her own home, Tammy confined herself to one bedroom and one bathroom, cutting out human connection to her family, cut off from affection and contact, no touching, no
hugs, the things we crave more than anything else during a crisis as crippling as Covid-19.
With her ‘Personal Protective Clothing’ as her battle armour, Tammy kept working through what can only be described as ‘The toughest weeks in her long established health industry career’, knowing that each minute spent working was another minute risking her own life. The price she was paying, just to bring some relief to her patients. Finally the turning point of the virus fight had been reached with the death toll in Europe and
the United Kingdom reaching a critical point, Tammy and her family began to consider that returning to Australia might be the best decision for them, but just days prior to the cut-off date for making this decision, the decision was made for them, with Tammy showing symptoms of Covid-19. Tammy says that the start of the virus was tame in comparison to the end game. “The scariest point came when I was no longer able to catch my breath and the sharp pains that ripped through my chest, lungs and kidneys reminded me of the colleagues that hadn’t made it. All I could think of were the patients I’d cared for that hadn’t made it, wondering if I would be the same, having a history of asthma,” said Tammy. One evening an ambulance was called for Tammy, the team arriving in PPE, knowing that they were there to help one of their own. Tammy was naturally frightened, she knew that with a
Tammy, Mackenzie, Kevin and Lauren Pluck
high heart rate and her oxygen levels decreasing, if she went with her medical colleagues, she might not return home. “Going to the hospital would have meant I was alone, and I wouldn’t have had the emotional support of my family, I should have gone for oxygen support as my lungs are now in pretty bad shape, but I just couldn’t do it” said Tammy. As time went on and the hours turned to days and the days to weeks, Tammy started to recover. The whole family were tested and it turned out one of her daughters was also infected. (Luckily, it turned out to be a much milder dose). Whilst many people would be focusing on solely getting better, her mind couldn’t help but drift to the possibility of her losing this battle. She began making plans to ensure that all support was in place for her family. “I knew I needed to be prepared either way when all of this started, so I discussed the care of my girls with family, made legacy books for my daughters, told all my family and friends I loved them,” said Tammy. Like every bad storm, the wild weather doesn’t last forever and the sun begins to shine through. As the world slowly pulls out of what can only be seen as months of unprecedented experiences, our health care workers are still on the front lines. No matter how many layers of personal protective clothing are worn, or no matter how careful you are, there are still high risks for those on the front lines and their families, which is something at the forefront of everyone's mind.
Whilst Covid-19 has taken so much away from so many, the importance of realising the value in family is a feeling that Tammy and many around the world hold close. Tammy hopes that in the weeks to come that we will all remember the time where we came together for the well-being of others, and the importance of making time and prioritising those in need. As rates of infection in both the UK and Australia are begin to fall with days without new cases are slowly becoming the daily news, life waits to return to normal as this physical and emotionally draining virus slowly loosens its grip, however reminding us of the tenacity and power of the human race and how precious life is. Luckily, Tammy is now back at work, however she will still need to take things easy for a while.
What troupers Tammy and her health professional comrades, all around the world, are. I do not think we will ever be able say THANK YOU enough times to her and those like her. Thank you, Tammy, and thank you to any nurse or health professional, teacher or anyone in the front line of this life altering virus, we appreciate all that you do. ca
update your image? When you first consider designing a logo, it may seem a fairly simple skill to acquire, but that is only until you actually get started on designing one. A well-known designer sums it up as ‘Anyone can design a logo, but not everyone can design the right logo’. A logo is not just an image, it is also an introduction to your business brand. We know that ‘first impressions count’, however a logo also creates brand trust and loyalty. A strong logo design conveys your product, your service, your identity, it SHOUTS out who you really are. It needs to create recognition, trust and reputation through its design solution and must be carried through all marketing strategies whether print or digital. A logo is a flag, a signature, a street sign, a business card, a newsletter, a presentation folder, a car. It represents who you are as a business, what you do and how professional you are perceived. It is essential that you are seen holistically. A logo is rarely about ONE thing, it must work together with all the other facets of your business to anchor your business branding. Zonya Bird of Creative Bird Design has been a designer for 35 years. Her experience in graphic design covers: logo design and brand development
- business cards - corporate stationery, printed literature flyers/brochures - catalogues/ magazines - press advertising newsletters, signage/packaging, digital - social media artwork - email marketing - website banners - email signatures. Zonya has seen many changes in the industry, in the way design work is created and produced BUT what has not changed is the need for good business branding and the need to TRULY stand out in the marketplace.
Business branding is the cornerstone of any company so it can be seen in the marketplace. It must start with defining your business’ values and how you want this to be communicated in the marketplace. Once defined, it is time to consolidate into a single tagline. It needs to be used consistently and should summarise your business. If your logo no longer relates in terms of business values or event personality, as sometimes there is a shift in direction, then its important to revisit your business branding and maybe refresh, revamp, rebrand. Sometimes, it can be just a simple case of updating font styles, colour palette and styling, other times it needs to be a complete rebrand. Contact Zonya today to claim your FREE Brand UPDATE consultation, mention MATTERS MAGAZINE to claim yours and soar above your competition. ca www.creativebirddesign.com www.mattersmagazine.com.au 13

END OF FINANCIAL YEAR
2020 END OF FINANCIAL YEAR
fast approaching BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION
As the new financial year is just around the corner, here are some new items to consider from the standard year end matters. INSTANT ASSET WRITE OFF – THRESHOLD INCREASED AGAIN As at 12 March 2020, businesses can immediately deduct the business portion of assets up to the value of $150,000, previously $30,000. At this stage, this measure is available until 30 June 2020. The assets at the higher end are for heavy equipment used for business not luxury cars. For cars, the write off is limited the depreciation car limit of $57,581. The write off limit is $30,000 for the rest of the year, i.e. 1 July 2019 to 11 March 2020. Good news is that the deduction is for either new or second-hand assets, in the year the asset was first used or installed ready for use. Assets purchased prior to 30 June 2020 still quality for the immediate deduction.
Otherwise you may end up making an excess contributions and end up paying more tax than anticipated – not the outcome anyone is looking for. HOME OFFICE EXPENSES – NEW RATE The Tax Office will accept a temporary simplified method or shortcut method) of calculating additional running expenses from 1 March 2020 until at least 30 June 2020. Using this method allows you to claim a rate of 80 cents per work hour for all additional running expenses as a result of working from home due to COVID-19. Refer to the ATO website if preparing your own tax return to make sure you read all the conditions applicable to this method. If you use the shortcut method to claim a deduction and you lodge your 2019–20 tax return through myGov you must include the note ‘COVIDhourly rate’ in your tax return. DONATIONS
As always, if you decide to take advantage of the instant asset write-off, you should make the decision based on the needs of your business and its cashflow/finances not the tax savings.
Beware not all donations are taxable deductible – if you buy a ticket in a prize home/event – this is not deductible, same for a Go Fund Me page. Make sure the charity is a deductible gift recipient.
CONCESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS CATCH UP
As always remember, when it comes to end of financial year – get organised prior to 30 June, and roll into 2020 financial year well prepared and informed. f
There is no change in the concessional contributions cap is $25,000 for everyone. However, this year, if your super balance is less than $500,000, you have the ability to “catch up” your concessional contributions. E.g. If you contributed $15,000 in the 2018/2019 tax year, in the 2019/2020 year, you can contribute a total of $35,000 – the standard $25,000 plus the catch up of $10,000. Prior to considering this option, always contact your superfund to ensure you are completing the correct processes to ensure the maximum tax deduction. 22 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE

LOCAL CAFÉ, SHINING EXAMPLE OF HOW TO
dance in the rain
Jeff and Dani were born and bred Sydneysiders, Coogee was their local area and Surf Lifesaving was their life. For twenty years they were dedicated to their building business with ten of those seeing Dani as a Travel Agent. They met at just 17, started dating at 19 and married at 24. They are now proud parents to three daughters, and grandparents to one granddaughter and one grandson. After travelling around Australia in 2002, the Sunshine Coast was the last port of call before returning to life in Sydney. However, they fell in love with the coast instantly, and instead of returning to their Sydney life, they drove back to Sydney, packed up their things and returned to Buddina to start a new life in Queensland. An old beach house was on the market on Harbour Parade, Buddina and became theirs soon after. The site where the ‘One on La Balsa’ cafe now sits became available to purchase in 2005. It had always been their dream to have a cafe in this location, but with little to no experience running such a business, 24 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
they weren’t exactly sure about getting it right, however they we were fortunate enough to have experienced operator, Nikki Kirby, come on board to assist in the set up and running of One On La Balsa. And the rest, as they say, is history. Jeff and Dani are extremely grateful for the support and love they have received from the local community over these past years. And even more particularly, the last six weeks, which has seen turbulent life changing events that have seen the locals rally above and beyond what they could have ever imagined. Dani says, “We will be forever grateful”. As some may know, they also recently set up a shipping container in nearby Bokarina known as Bok Beach Cafe. This cafe specialises in takeaway coffee, drinks and grab and go food. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. People wanting to get out and about on the local walking tracks have shown great support to the little shipping container. Business right now is considerably different to that of the past. Sit down dining is out. Replaced by take-away meals, fruit and vegies and other groceries and even a drop of wine with the take-away meals are now all available. Check on their facebook for updates on the dining in rules, as it is constantly changing.
Dani shared that it was important to them that they were able to maintain a business that was going to be easily adaptable to the daily changing climate, offering what their customers needed, together with keeping their staff employed. Thankfully they have managed to achieve both and are very proud of this. Their belief is that they have to be able to quickly adapt and change the way they run the business to fit in with the Government requirements.
Dani says, “Give it a go and if it doesn’t work, move on.” Their short-term ideas are just that. Short term. Requirements are changing daily, we have to be able to adapt. Long term goals include to be able to have their customers seated back in the cafe. The take home meals have been a huge success, so the plan is definitely to continue with those when life gets back to the ‘new normal’. The past weeks have perhaps changed peoples thinking about life. Cafes and restaurants may not go back to the way they ran in the past but will potentially embrace the changes and create a ‘new normal’.
A perfect example of how One on La Balsa think outside the square.
We are so lucky here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, it really is possible to DANCE, rain, hail or shine.
Well done Dani and Jeff for leading the way locally, for pivoting your business and showing a shining example of what is possible. We are sure that other cafés and restaurants around the Coast have or will follow suit and that we will all continue to dance in the rain, and that sooner than we know it we will be back to dancing in the sunshine. e www.OneOnLaBalsa.com.au

OCEAN REEVE PUBLISHING
Considering book publishing? TWO COMMON PUBLISHING HURDLES AND HOW TO JUMP THEM Bringing a book to life can be a daunting task. Just the process of writing a book is a massive undertaking and once written; it’s not hard to see why some people hesitate to commit to a journey with so many uncertainties. Complicating things further is that the majority of the work is not the actual writing process, or even the publishing process, but marketing. For many potential authors, understanding the publishing process and book marketing can evoke frustration and destroy their aspirations. But it doesn’t have to be a cumbersome, confusing process. It’s important to know that publishing your book takes more than a little time and the ability to Google ‘How do I publish a book?’ It takes action, belief and commitment. You need a competent and qualified team and the ability to hold yourself accountable to the process. If you don’t know what those activities are or how to complete them, you can run into issues. Publishing a quality book and have it do well is not impossible. Publishing and marketing a book is a series of small steps that add up to an experience of a lifetime. Here are two typical hurdles people encounter that often put a stop to the publishing
26 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
journey. As you take the first few steps in your publishing journey and make your dreams of publishing a book your reality, consider how and when these hurdles will affect you and how to overcome them.
First Hurdle: I can’t do it Self-doubt is the writer’s biggest enemy. Everyone who has ever chosen to express themselves creatively would’ve, at some point, fallen victim to creeping self-doubt. No matter where you are in the process of creating your book, self-doubt can slow your momentum, convincing you that you just aren’t good enough, that you have nothing of value to share, or you ask yourself ‘who wants to know my story/experience/insight’ – so you quit before embarrassment occurs.
Jumping the hurdle: There is no crystal ball that will keep you from feeling this occasionally. However, keeping a positive attitude, holding self-belief and working with a strong team can help guide you through it. Keep moving through and understand that, even if things aren’t exactly how you imagined, you’re still doing it… you’ve still made that step. Stay patient when you need to be; be bold and assertive when you need to be, and take the lead in driving your creative expression through to completion. I have worked with almost 5000 authors in my
career. If you were to ask me how often I have walked people through this cloud, I couldn’t tell you as I have lost count. Here are two common questions that do occur during the self-doubt moments and my responses. 1. How many potential authors do you talk to who never published their book? I have met thousands, tens of thousands, of people who have shown an interest in writing and publishing. From that group only a very small percentage actual start writing. From them, only a very small percentage finish. From them, only a very small percentage decides to talk to someone in my seat and finally, from them, only a very small percentage actually decides to take that next step. We are taught to stick within the mob mentality mindset and not step up and out. Our inner voice inherently wants to be creative but our conditioning has taught us to stay within the norm. The funny thing is, once we are expressing our creativity and realising it publicly, the feeling of accomplishment, satisfaction and joy is irreplaceable. 2. Is there any kind of review process I can get to help me get an honest appraisal of my book? Absolutely. A manuscript appraisal is the first place we recommend new authors start. It is essential to get that professional feedback and critique so you are building confidence with each step taken. You can
HOLIWELL
ARE WE,
“All in this together”? WITH ANDY VAUTIER read more about Manuscript Appraisals here www. oceanreevepublishing.com/manuscript-appraisals/
Second Hurdle: I’m too busy Life gets in the way. Between family and work commitments, and the day-to-day grind, it can keep you from getting your book published or promote it. So it’s easy to let the idea of the long game get to you. The easy option is just giving up.
Jumping the hurdle: If it’s important to you, you’ll make the time. Action plans are everything. Scheduling time each day or second day to focus on your book, and whether you spend one hour or four, make sure you’re making progress each time. Additionally, ensure your publishing team of knowledgeable, responsive, efficient professionals keep you on course, advising you which tasks need to be completed, and help you find the time you need to put into moving your book from idea to a reality. You’re putting in the time, but your team can help you move through each part of the process one step at a time. Here are two recommendations I would suggest before beginning the journey. 1. Realise and accept that no one is saying you have to change your life and structure of it to publish and promote your book. Start small with allocating 30 minutes a day to some activity towards your dream and as you form the habit, you will soon see that become an hour, two hours… 2. Ask for help. Ensure you start building your team by working with a publishing house that offers a dedicated publishing manager and marketing mentor to guide you through these two areas of unknowns. I deliberately structured by publishing company to offer those two quite definitive sides to the journey and the right people to work with you, so you don’t feel overwhelmed. Now your two most likely concerns have been addressed, pick up that pen and start or grab that finished manuscript from the bottom drawer and reach out. Remember every step that you take towards your publishing dream is one step closer to making it a reality. #becreative #beinspired #bepublished Until next time, Ocean Reeve Publishing f www.oceanreevepublishing.com
It’s been the catch cry of politicians, advertisers and media outlets, often appearing in ‘promos’ but are we really, “All in this together?” I mean, is that highly paid TV host really in the same boat as the gym, restaurant or travel agent down the road when she says those words? Has she had her pay cut and had to apply to go on JobKeeper? The private sector has been targeted by the virus and the reaction to it. Small to medium sized businesses will be the biggest casualty when we summarise and look back at what happened in 2020. Dealing with businesses that have been shut down, had their cash flows cut off immediately and had to stand down staff and friends, I feel they are in a totally different group than those that have had the inconvenience of not been able to visit friends or their favourite restaurant or club. So to say both groups are experiencing the “same” pain would be like saying “I know how you feel” when making an employee redundant. So, whilst we are dealing with a common threat being a virus, how it affects the health of our business, income and us personally and mentally, is anything but common. And in dealing with your plan to
navigate through this challenge, is again, an individual journey. Now, more than ever, is the time to put a plan together on what your steps will be. Ask yourself what you want to achieve and why you want to do it. It could be the same business but with a blended offering or a new business venture. And engage some help, be it a mentor/coach or someone you trust and respect. There are many services out there that can assist. Make your goals SMART; specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and with a timeframe. Put the markers and milestones in place and acknowledge and celebrate when you achieve them. And do lots of “what ifs”. This is the perfect time to do so. Having an individual plan for your response to this challenge will give you focus and channel energy into your solution rather than focusing on the problem, as most of us are doing presently. Shifting your mindset to find a positive outcome will improve your mental health and give you purpose, and quite possibly, put you in a better position than you were in, prior to the virus.
It is an individual journey, present and future but with some assistance and help, we can use the word ‘together’ with more relevance. ca info@holiwell.net.au www.holiwell.net.au

OH OH OH, IT’S MAGIC
VICKIE MAGIC
turns 60 What? Is that actually even possible? When I look in the mirror, I just don’t see it, I think I have that opposites disease. I have honestly had a pretty amazing life.
It all started on the 19th of July 1960. It was a Tuesday, I was born under the sign of Cancer, the Australian Prime Minister was Robert Menzies, the US president at the time was Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican). In that special week of July, Make Mine Mink, directed by Robert Asher, was one of the most viewed movies released in 1960 while The Enemy Within by Robert F. Kennedy was one of the best selling books.
>> On the 19th of July 1848 the first Women's Rights Convention Seneca Falls NY >> 1877 the first Wimbledon tennis championships held. >> 1880 the first public library starts lending books >> 1957 the first rocket with nuclear warhead was fired AND >> In 1961 the very first inflight movie is shown on an airplane. It’s super cool to look back. Just for fun have a look at the day you were born, see who was born on the same day, and see what happened over the years on your birthday.
28 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
A little more about ME. I’ve had a pretty amazing life to be honest. Born to parents, Elaine and Jerry Exton, I can say that my childhood was most definitely memorable, it was a very happy time, I had older sisters, Debby and Julie, until I was eleven when my little sister, Sheree, was born. I was popular, I was thin, I was pretty, I was smart, I was good at sports, playing netball and then becoming a runner. I was a Queensland Champion middle distance runner (800 and 1500 track and field and cross country) from the age of 11 till 16, at 16 boys took over from running. I left school at 15 and started working in a solicitor’s office, Gilshenen and Luton in the centre of Brisbane. I just Googled them and they still exist, wow, that’s pretty cool, 45 years later, and they weren’t new when I started. I spent a lot of years travelling the world and have been fortunate enough to visit over 80 countries. I had a few jobs after the solicitor’s office and eventually ending up working for Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for 11 years as a communicator. I figured it would be a great idea to let the Government pay for my travel. This was a pretty special time in my life where I was fortunate enough to have two postings, one to Islamabad in Pakistan, and another to London England. I am so grateful for that period of my life. I had two amazing children, a gorgeous little girl, Ashleigh born in February 1991, and then a son, Jamie, born in 1992. To this day these are the best two things I have ever accomplished. After leaving Foreign Affairs and Trade, I went on to become a Beauty Therapist and ran my own beauty salons for the next 11 years. On the 15th of December 2001 I met Mr Magic, who would become the absolute love of my life, my rock, my soul mate, to this day he makes me laugh each and every day, and I know in my heart that he and I are a FOREVER thing, twice the MAGIC. I digress, back to my story. A frozen shoulder resulted in my changing to radio sales and the rest as they say in the classics, is history. I found out I was really good at sales, and just loved the advertising world. Ever since I have worked in advertising and media, culminating in owning Matters Magazine in early 2010. The past ten years have just been incredible, living on the Sunshine Coast is by far our favourite spot to live. We live less than a minute from the beach at Buddina and I honestly have to pinch myself to believe this is my life some days. I started out with the magazine, just selling advertising. I loved writing but wouldn’t really say I was a writer, I did everything backwards, I did an editing course, a publishing course and ultimately ended up becoming a journalist. I am pretty proud of that accomplishment to be honest, doing the course while working full time on the magazine. But to this day, I am pretty proud of this. The magazine is all about WHAT MATTERS MOST ON THE SUNSHINE COAST, we pride ourselves on that very local content.
We always aim to bring you everything that MATTERS and to inspire you to focus on what MATTERS to you. I went on to create weekend getaway retreats for ladies and for the last ten years these ‘You MATTER’ retreats have been inspiring and empowering women to live their best life, to master their inner superpowers and to find the happiness, contentment and freedom, they want for themselves. Putting on these retreats made me want to learn more, so that I could share more, to lead more ladies towards loving their lives more, so I decided I needed to become a coach, yep again in my spare time, ha. Don’t they say, the busier a person is the more they will be able to get done. I absolutely loved the learnings from becoming a coach and of course this helped my own personal life more than I could have ever imagined, and so MATTERS coaching began. I always had a thought that I had to decide one day which way I would go. Would I focus on the magazine? Would I focus on the retreats? Or would I focus on the Coaching. Since Covid I have had an absolute epiphany, I now realise MORE THAN EVER that these three businesses are all just arms of the exact same PASSION, the PASSION to inspire people to focus more on WHAT MATTERS. It’s all about what MATTERS, everything is about what MATTERS. We have to find what MATTERS, to us, and then focus everything we can towards that. So, I just love how these three businesses all focus on what MATTERS and inspiring my clients towards living their best life, this of course in turn helps me to live my best life. So it’s a win win win.
I have to say that inspiring and empowering others to LEVEL UP is what I wake up for each day. Through MATTERS Magazine, MATTERS Coaching, You MATTER Retreats, and now just launching MATTERS on-line courses, I get to empower people who are upset or angry about something that happened in their past, or who are overtaken by anxiety, worry, overwhelm about the future, who are living in fear, (of failure, of lack of worth, of not succeeding), people who lack confidence to have the courage to live their life to the max. I know that it is not their fault, just like it was not mine, we are all a product of our upbringing, our surroundings, situations, incidences, we can’t change that, but we can change ‘what now’. Through my courses and through my coaching and through the magazine, I get to help people level up, to live in the now, to have more confidence and courage than they ever thought possible, to live their life happier and more content with no fear. My goodness gracious me, this is the most rewarding life. I just jump out of bed each day unable to wait, unable to focus on anything else, THIS MATTERS more than anything on the planet. It is my goal, it is my purpose, it is my future to empower as many people as possible to live the most authentic version of them. To have no fear to be who they are. Until just last year, I can share that I personally lacked confidence, I hated who I was. I truly believed that I was an absolute fraud. You see I had been trying to lose weight for over 15 years. Whatever I tried, did not work, I felt that I had no control and I just couldn’t do it. This was devastating to me because I was www.mattersmagazine.com.au 29

saying that I could help people to be do and have whatever they wanted, but here I was unable to get the one thing I wanted. A slim body. Unable to achieve the thing that was so important, not just for my confidence, but for my health, for my longevity, for my future. I was pathetic, I was a fraud, I was a failure. Personally I can tell you that I struggled for years with my weight, the words, “I can’t” came out of my mouth on a daily, sometimes hourly basis when it came to stopping myself from eating the foods that clearly were making me remain overweight. One day I was coaching a girl and she was telling me over and over again how she couldn’t do something. “I have tried this, and tried that, and the other thing. Nothing works for me, I just can’t,” she said. I remember saying to her, “I am sick to death of hearing you say I can’t, you have been saying this now for six months, about this same thing. Honestly, it’s enough.” So, I said to her, “Instead of telling me and the world and yourself over and over how you can’t, let’s do a ‘HOW CAN I?’ braintstorm.” So, we brainstormed how she could. We brainstormed listing everything she could do towards making this happen. We brainstormed everyone she knew who had achieved success in this area. We listed what they had done. I then asked her which of the things on that list she had tried, and which she hadn’t and which she would be prepared to try. It was so successful at and the end of the session she said, “Vickie, I actually can, I know it. I can feel it, this is it.” And it was. From that day she literally changed from I can’t to I can. However, I left that coaching session and sat in my car and bawled my eyes out. I was
her, I was, “ I can’t, I can’t, I can’t”, about my weight loss, I had been up and down and up and down for over ten years. I just couldn’t do it. I truly believed that I could not. I truly believed that I just couldn’t stick to anything. I just can’t, I would say it over and over, I was just like her. That was my truth. When it came to weight loss, the words I CAN’T were my absolute 100% truth. So, that day was the turning point for me, I went home and brainstormed. “How can I?” I asked myself who I knew who had been successful, what had they done? Could I do that? Would I do that? I knew at that stage about five people who had had gastric sleeve surgery and been very successful. I was scared out of my brain, I wouldn’t do that, I couldn’t do that. Or could I? So, I started my research and within a week had booked in. I lost 48 kilos in a year, yes you read right, 48 kilos. And I can honestly say, it is one of the best things I have ever done in my life. Taking me back to the real me, the me that I always felt like I was inside. When I would look in the mirror and see this other fat version of me, sometimes I didn’t even recognise her. Right up until the age of 40 I was never really overweight, getting to only 69 kilos fully pregnant with my babies. So, stepping onto the scales and seeing 113 kilos come up, well for a long time it just didn’t click that that was me. I felt like a foreigner in my own body. Having now lost the weight now FOREVER, I feel like me again. Having brainstormed and come up with something I could do and getting rid of the ‘I CAN’T’ once and for all, I was able to finally get myself back to a healthy me. And quite honestly a happy me.
I now have the confidence to live my life out on the skinny branches, to take risks and to put myself out on a limb. I now have the confidence that I am living my authentic life, I just love walking into an event now, walking into a room now, I feel proud of how I look, of who I am. I love to walk into a shop and buy from the rack, rather than having to go only to a few select shops that had clothes large enough for me. I now basically eat for nutrition, eating is definitely part of my life, and I love it, but it is no longer MY WHOLE LIFE. Because of this I can now live my life with absolute PURPOSE AND PASSION and feel confident that I am no longer a fraud, telling people that they can have whatever they want, while all the time wishing I had something different for myself that I just couldn’t get. I now stand tall with pride that I did what it took for me to become the person that I already was inside of me. I stand tall, beaming with pride of who I am and the abilities that I have to empower others, and you know what I truly believe that each and every human deserves to stand tall and be proud of the person they are, be authentic and not care what others think of them, I truly believe that each and every human deserves to be heard and deserves whatever it is that their heart desires, and my life, my purpose, my passion is to ensure they can. COVERING THE SUNSHINE COAST IN COLOUR AND STYLE 30 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
IS NOT ENDING
If you have the internet, as the majority these days do, you may have noticed ads appearing on Facebook and Google saying you have to rush and get solar panels now because the ‘solar rebate’ is ending - this is not true. The government’s Renewable Energy Scheme will still be lowering the cost of rooftop solar for years to come. To be precise, it runs until 2030. The fact is the government discount for rooftop solar pulled back by 8.3% at midnight on the December 21, 2019. This means from January 1, 2020, you will only have to pay around $400 extra for a 6.6-kilowatt solar system. Most solar companies are not going to want to absorb the cost of the 8.3% fall in the government rebate but, because they are in a very competitive industry, many of them will soak up at least some of it. They’re able to do this because the cost of solar hardware keeps falling.
So, there is no need to rush into getting solar power. Take enough time so you can be sure you know what you want. Don’t feel pressured by dodgy ads to rush into getting solar panels before you’re prepared. But once you are prepared, get out there and grab it. The sunlight is free and you should use it to generate your own electricity. So when you have done your research, find a local trusted installer and get harvesting those priceless sunrays to cut your power bills down. m www.wholesale-solar.com.au

ACCOUNTABILITY As a business owner myself, I love the freedom and flexibility that business ownership gives in terms of business strategy – but this can be both isolating and a double edged sword – I’m only accountable to myself so if I don’t action something, I have nobody but myself to answer to!
This ensures that your logo is always visible and never covered over.
Our clients experience similar challenges and a great way to overcome this is to surround yourself with a support network – an advisor, coach or other business owner that will hold you accountable – your accountability mentor.
We also have a large range of seasonal promotional products which are the ideal corporate gift. These include beanies, hand sanitiser and coffee mugs and more. The ideal way to get your brand noticed, as well as treating your valued customers.
Set yourself a short-term goal (90-day goals are great), build actions around it and importantly, set KPI’s. An example could be I will grow monthly revenue by 30%. To achieve this, I need to speak to 10 new customers a week.

COVID-19 – A CHALLENGE LIKE AUSTRALIA HAS NEVER SEEN The shockwaves from the outbreak of COVID-19 are being felt right across the Australian economy, and residential tenancies is no different. Tenants and landlords are facing unprecedented challenges, none of which were anticipated at the time they signed their leases. There is no doubt the negative effects will be felt for a long time by tenants and landlords alike, however, I would rather dwell on some of the positive effects I have experienced through this challenging period in my business while working with my owners and their tenants: - Empathy and consideration for each other; acceptance that all parties need to work together to get through this challenge; supportive owners who are willing to set aside their own challenges to support their tenant/s; open, calm and transparent communication from all parties; tenants who show concern for their owners and gratitude for their support; and realisation from both sides that the prospect of prolonged business/ employment activity, remote working and even total shutdown is no-ones fault. We will get through this. ca

LET’S TALK GRANDPARENTS! Asking grandparents about their lives and their loves is great for us and it’s a fun and rewarding task for them too. People, generally, are quite pleased when someone shows an interest in who they are and what they do. Grandparents may live far away. Familial visits may be few and far between – this can mean children may not know their grandparents as well as they would like. When children question their grandparents about their past, they can learn much about their family’s history, and truly keep those important family stories alive. Once a grandfather or grandmother is gone, their stories can be gone as well – or at least become far more difficult to recover. Here are some starting questions for the kids: 1. What was your first job? 2. What are the full names of your siblings? 3. What were you good at in school? Did you have a favourite subject? 4. What was/has been one of the biggest struggles you’ve overcome?

USE YOUR TIME WISELY Whether it is due to changed circumstances, having more time on your hands or looking to make the most of the current low rates, now is a great time to review your financial position and use that time wisely to save. Talking to your mortgage broker you could: Access more favourable interest rates, reduce your mortgage payments or consolidate debts, or find a loan with flexible features that better suit you. Some lenders are offering unique credit opportunities at the moment, so if you are keen to review your situation now’s the time. You could also use this time to compare private health and other insurances, such as homes and cars. Mortgage brokers should have technology in place to assist you remotely including video conferencing and digital signatures. So even though we may not meet face to face, we can still assist you in finding the right finance for you. ca

CONTRACTORS INSURANCE – DO YOU HAVE IT COVERED?
CHOOSE YOUR OWN HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
UNCERTAINTY IS OUR CERTAINTY
Many business owners who are time-poor, cash-strapped hire a contractor or subcontractor. One of the reasons is that the contractors take care of their own insurance. But what if its isn’t always that straight forward?
Five reasons you should get out there and enjoy the ocean today!
In years to come, when economists look back, they will have the benefit of reflective pause, of figures and statistics of hindsight and clarity. This in stark contrast to the situation we find ourselves in now – facing an uncertain future. The only thing that we know with any degree of certainty at the moment is that business confidence has taken a hit and many employees are concerned about the future.
It’s important that business owners check that the contractors and sub-contractors have their own insurance in place. Request a copy of the contractor and subcontractors insurance and check that. Like anything, its always best to get it in writing. Have any contractors or subcontractors you use, sign a contact before they start working for you. Your contract needs to be properly drafted and spell out the chain of liability, to give both parties legal protection. All parties should pay particular attention to any indemnity clauses that can shift all liability for death, injury or loss onto them. Take your time and READ the contract to ensure your not signing a contract that writes away your liability. Check the Contractual Liability clause. This clause can exclude insurance over if you have signed a contract and reduces your rights to less than they normally would be at common law. ca Please be aware that any advice offered is General Advice only and has been prepared without taking into consideration your objectives, financial situation or needs. Unfortunately, the climate of fear and uncertainty can force businesses to focus on the short term by looking at potentially scaling back operations and staff. The engagement of this short-term strategy is only perpetuated by the exposure redundancies have received in the media. Large portions of the business sector tale their cue from the ‘wisdom’ of the corporate sector and may think that redundancies are inevitable in their business or industry. But with careful planning, SME’s can be agile and move with the times. With lean operations, the business sector has the ability to improve efficiencies in productivity, sustainability and to establish market share. IT'S FOCUS
that matters BY VICKIE MAGIC
Over the past ten years I have been facilitating mindfit retreats and taking on coaching clients and just recently have completed an online course. I had the thought that I needed to decide which way I would go, do I keep going with the magazine, or do I choose the retreats, or maybe the coaching. I just wasn’t sure. I was so confused. Then all of a sudden out of the blue an idea came into my head – (it’s only been ten years, we don’t want to rush these things, right?), so yeah I got this idea that all the business were linked, they were all about
“Eating disorders (ED) can be an overwhelming and confusing time for both the sufferer and family or carers.”
WHAT MATTERS, they were all about inspiring and educating, they were all about FOCUS and guiding people to focus their attention on where they were going, not where they’d come from. On what they wanted, not want they didn’t want. On looking forward, not looking back. On truly focussing on what MATTERS most. So of course it makes sense that all four arms of the business have the same focus, the same branding, that they are all about WHAT MATTERS. I can’t believe it has taken this long for me to see this, but now that I have, it just MAKES PERFECT SENSE. DURING CHAOS WORDS AND WORKS BY SPIRI BUHAGIAR
Living without Fear in these unprecedented times. DOWNLOAD MY FREE AUDIOS - information below. Watch people going down a roller coaster – some are screaming in excitement, whilst others are screaming in fear so what’s the difference? Both cause the heart to beat faster, however one called fear robs us of our strength and clarity of mind, whilst the other makes us feel invincible.
So, what do we do? What can we do? We need to try to remain CALM and present. This can be done by controlling our breathing – by taking long full breaths into our lungs and fully exhaling, multiple times... breathing in fully for a count of four and breathing out fully for a count of five. If you can’t manage that start with breathing in for three and breathing out for four. Taking deep inhalations through the nose and slowly exhaling out through the mouth it will settle down the sympathetic nervous system. You can do these simple breathing exercises anywhere, anytime; do this for at least five minutes and your body will be in a state of homeostasis. Giving it a chance to recharge, so to speak. When I am working with clients who have arrived at my doorstep seriously anxious, I take them through this process – everyone, is surprised at how simple this breath control is and how effective it is. You don’t have to close your eyes if you don’t wish, but I find that it helps to settle the nervous system more easily – I encourage people to imagine that they are breathing in and our through their heart centre which is found inn the middle of your chest. Repeat this sequence as often as necessary throughout your day. STILL TURNS, AND FAMILY LAW SETTLEMENTS ARE STILL PROGRESSING The pandemic of COVID-19 has caused a worldwide economic and social crisis, the likes of which have never been experienced nor could its impact have been expected. However, the earth still turns, and family law property settlements are still progressing. The Courts in Australia have adapted to this unprecedented time and remain open. We have seen a shift in attitude both between parties attempting to resolve matters and the Court’s flexibility in assisting parties to come to a resolution.
If you thought of delaying your property settlement, we encourage you to rethink and take that first step as every difficulty can be overcome. The courts for example have allowed electronic signatures and have established a special COVID-19 filing procedure to help fast track matters that have seen people experience financial strain due to the downturn in the economy. Business and Property valuations have still gone ahead with valuations reflecting the assessed values as close the court hearing dates as possible. We can assist you in providing Valuers with information to best assess “abnormal” business events and adjust valuations accordingly. Many parties do not wish to have a property settlement hanging over their head along with everything else going on at the moment. Like most, these parties do not wish to waste their money arguing and with the assistance of Chomley Family Law have taken a commercial approach to amicably and cost effectively resolving their matters. The team at Chomley Family have quickly adapted to the new Court processes and have honed their skills in dispute resolution to assist parties in resolving their matters. No matter how unique your situation is during COVID-19 we are here to work with you to build towards a better future. INVESTMENT MATTERS
WHAT DOES CORONAVIRUS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE OF THE
property market WITH IAN UGARTE
Right now, everyone's asking what's going to happen with the property market and how it's going to return because of the Coronavirus. Answer? VERY QUICKLY. Prior to Corona hitting Australia, we already had a number of State jurisdictions changing their residential tenancy act, and some are still in that process. But with Corona we saw a number of different agencies, councils and legislation changes that said to landlords and residents that you are currently in an embargo and you need to work with each other, to create an outcome. One thing I like about what COVID has created, is that for the first time those people that sat on the left, the socialists, have seen for the first time that the landlord capitalists are not really greedy and hungry investors pushing prices up. The majority of property investors in the Australian market, only own one, maybe two properties. These are mum and dad investors who are only investing in property to get their family into a better position. And with all of this, we’ve realised that essentially we’re all the same. We are all renters in some circumstances. We are all landlords in some circumstances and we're all homeowners in some circumstances and there's not much that changes amongst us. From the beginning of this period, before we even talked about lockdown, my commentary has suggested that we're going to see a decrease in property prices, a decrease in market sentiment and then a very quick return. We will have a ‘V’ shaped drop and we’re halfway through. In a ‘V’ shaped economy return we've got a sharp drop and a sharp increase. I liken this to the housing landscape during an election. When an election is announced six weeks out, there's a stall in the property
42 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
market, and the only properties that sell before an election are where people are desperate to sell and it essentially becomes a buyer’s marketplace where the properties sell for a low price point or with conditions not in favour of the seller, so as an overall median, you see a drop in the marketplace. But as soon as an election has passed, within six weeks, there’s a return of confidence, the sales come back, then generally it turns into a sellers’ market. My initial prediction was that we were going to have a three-month down and then a three-month upward trend. Now, have I always got it a hundred percent right? No, but have I got it right most of the times? Absolutely. My ability to generalize, to look at 18 year cycles and look at the cycle of what's happened in Australia in 60, 72, 89, 2004, 2008, 2015. I have a little bit of experience under my belt as I've been investing for 29 years now and I’ve seen it all before. Although I do concede that this is a little different. My prediction is that you will see a very strong marketplace that will actually return very quickly and 2020 and 2021 will be bumper years in real estate. m www.smallisthenewbig.com.au

PRINT AND PAPER
in a digital world WITH ASH WANBON, GRAPHIC DESIGN & PRE-PRESS
Regularly I see messages such as ‘Consider the environment before you print this email’, ‘Go paperless’, ‘Go Green’ and ‘Save the Trees’. These appeals are frustrating, they are not based in fact!
consumers prefer and enjoy reading printed medium. They are more likely to trust stories they read in print over stories found in social media. Additionally, 68% do not pay attention to online advertisement and are more likely to take action after seeing an advertisement in a printed magazine or newspaper, even if they saw the same ad online.
So, you don’t have to go paperless, you can print that email, it’s helping the trees! Print and paper cannot be beaten for attractiveness impact and sustainability! m
Such messages suggest electronic communications are more environmentally friendly than paper-based communications. Statements like this are made without considering the manufacturing and lifespan of these different mediums. Studies show environmental impacts of the digital world contributes to around 3% of global greenhouse gasses and is predicted to rise to 14% by 2040. Electronic waste generates 44.7million tonnes, of which 435 thousand tonnes were mobile phones, representing more mass than the Empire State Building! Misleading information has led to consumers to believe paper is wasteful, a contributor greenhouse gases, and de-forestation. On the contrary, the paper and printing industry CO2 emissions have reduced by 25% since 2005. CREATING A PERFECT
gallery wall
Creating a gallery wall is a perfect way to make a big personal impact at home! This can help you make a statement about who you are and what you or your family like. Gallery walls have become the new feature wall in homes being built today. Gallery walls are being created in the design process of new homes to create a statement in a living room or make a blank staircase come to life or to just simply showcase your favourite items.
Tell a visual story – Gallery walls can be used to tell a story of your travels. You can use a combination of photos, prints or postcards you have collected along the way. This creates a great conversation piece for guest that come into your home
arrangements should look and feel as though it has been collected over time. We often recommend cutting brown paper the size to get a visual before you knock the holes in the wall.
Mix it up – you can have anything as part of your gallery wall. Illustrations, paintings, book pages, photos, items you have collected, drawings, artwork, you just need to keep it eclectic and visually interesting. It can be all tied together with theme, frame colour, style, or image colour palette.
Framing is the key – the gallery wall is not only about the artwork, its needs to be framed in the same colour, shape, and style. Having consistency in the framing finish is the key to creating visual unity in the grouping. A variety of frames/sizes help to create a unique, homey feel. m

being a landlord? Buying a residential investment property is the right step towards securing your financial future. But the reality of being a landlord is often more time consuming and stressful than you thought.
It’s not as simple as sitting back and collecting rent from whoever takes up residency. You can hire a property manager, but even this isn’t foolproof; sometimes this causes even more headaches. But knowing the biggest potential risks and pain points can save your sanity. #1 PAIN POINT - Repairs and maintenance Legislation requires you to keep the property in good working order and in good repair. If there are outstanding repairs, tenants have grounds to be paid compensation or even terminate their lease. Repair costs are unpredictable and often come at a time when you don’t have the
spare cash. The feeling of “I’m always putting my hand in my pocket” is common among landlords. #2 PAIN POINT - Bad tenants Rent arrears, damage to the property, even installing a meth lab in the house… landlord’s worst nightmares. Unfortunately, it happens. It’s a common misconception that good screening will eliminate this risk. But it’s not that simple, bad tenants still slip through the cumbersome system of tribunals and blacklists. Plus, sometimes a good tenant turns bad due to relationship breakdown or job loss. #3 PAIN POINT - Incompetent property managers Property managers can assist but there is potential for communication issues. Playing phone tag or even worse, no-one calls back when you need to know what’s happening with your property. Trust is vital and choosing a property manager who guarantees their performance is what savvy landlords are doing. GuaRENTeed has been designed from the ground-up to alleviate this pain. In an Australian first, we provide landlords a Rent Guarantee, a Fixed Price Maintenance Guarantee and a Tenant Guarantee. ca www.guaRENTeed.com.au

WHAT SUCKS MOST ABOUT
YES, CHEF! PAUL HELPS LOCALS COOK UP A CAREER CREATING CULINARY MASTERPIECES
Paul Breheny fell in love with cooking from a young age, making his first loaf of bread at just five-years-old. Raised in Derbyshire, England by his publican parents, he was no stranger to the kitchen when he was growing up – in fact by the time he was seven, Paul had graduated to helping his parents feed their hungry patrons by cooking cheese and onion pies. Fast-forward to his teenage years and there was no question when it came to what he wanted to do for a living. Attending a catering college in the United Kingdom, Paul spent two years studying everything from making beds to cooking for the masses. Hungry to learn more and broaden his skills, he spent his first four years working for a variety of different restaurants and establishments, before making the move to Cronulla with his Australian wife. “I was the Executive Chef at the Sydney Morning Herald, where I used to cook for 2000 people, catering for the cafeteria and their private functions,” Paul said. “I got to cook for some pretty important people as well, like high flying executives and senior politicians.” During this time, Paul started a successful film catering business that prepared food for the cast and crew of shows like Home and Away and Australian Idol. He eventually sold this to open the award-winning Sydney restaurant Fratelli Del Mare, which he co-owned and operated for 10 years. By this time, Paul had developed a
46 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
passion for seafood and a knowledge of the entertainment industry, which he put into practice as the co-producer and presenter of TV show, The Hook and The Cook. “It’s essentially a show where we catch fish and show viewers how to cook it, there and then on the rocks,” Paul said. “It’s been pretty successful. When we were on TV we got to go to America with it, and now we’re on YouTube, we have 18,000 subscribers and some pretty big name fishing sponsors." “I’ve also done work with the TV show Escape with ET as a result of its success.” In addition to all this, Paul has worked as a commercial cookery trainer since 2007, joining the TAFE Queensland team at their Mooloolaba campus in 2016. Paul now spends his time passing on his extensive knowledge to the Sunshine Coast’s next generation of chefs, training both local and international students in the latest cooking techniques and providing them with invaluable skills that often see them land jobs working for some of the Coast’s – and the country’s – most prestigious restaurants. “I find it’s a close knit community here; everybody here knows everyone’s name,” Paul said. “It’s great to just see these kids improve and thrive – it’s really rewarding. I just love teaching and enjoy seeing people go from barely being able to use a knife to being a fully qualified chef."
“You’ll always have a job if you get into this career – you’ll never be out of work because there is work everywhere. And if you’re passionate about it, there are so many really good restaurants you can work for on the Coast,” he said. Working as part of a team of highly experienced and skilled chefs to deliver hands-on industry-standard training, Paul and his fellow cookery trainers regularly consult with local businesses to ensure they have their finger on the pulse of the food industry. Whether it’s offering a specialised focus on high demand cuisines or teaching students about costings, students and apprentices gain a fullyrounded knowledge that will see them enter the workplace as confident and capable employees. The Mooloolaba campus even has students operate a live restaurant, where they speak to customers and put everything they’ve learned into practice. “You have to be quick in the kitchen or you get left behind, so we put a lot of emphasis on making our students industry ready.”

Dear Vickie Hi Sally,
Dear Vickie, d of feeling I’m sick and tire am always sick and tired. I ing too in overwhelm, do have much and never do it all. enough time to Help?
Yes, I hear you. Sometimes life can just go crazy, we get so so busy and sometimes don’t have enough hours in the day. Honestly, if you don’t stop you will burn out, so you have to find a way. My suggestion is start by ensuring that you set yourself up for success. Are you exercising each day? Are you taking some time out for you? Time to reflect, time for gratitude, sometimes these things seem too far away, that we just can’t fit them in, but the truth is that when we do, we become less stressed. The reality is that there are only so many hours in a day. If you allocate that time carefully and stick to it, you begin to allow the overwhelm to disappear. Step One – Plan your day. Step Two – Stick to the plan Step Three – Remind yourself that you are doing the best you can.
Sally M.
Have a question? Send your question to Vickie at vmagic@bmmag.com.au
Dear Vickie, I am at the end of my tether; I worry about everything all the time. Help? Ian
Hi Ian, Step One – Ask yourself this question, “What is the worst thing that can happen? Step Two – Ask yourself the questions, “If that does happen, what would I do?” Step Three – Remind yourself that whatever happens will happen and it will all be ok. Tell yourself this – “Everything will be ok in the end, and if it’s not ok, it’s simply not the end.” Just take one step at a time, on baby step forward, remind yourself that Rome wasn’t built in a day, but that every single day, another step forward towards building Rome was taken.

FOCUS ON CANS
And by training ourselves to focus on CANSwhat we CAN do - despite circumstances - we empower ourselves. We fortify our wellbeing by remaining calm and focusing on what we CAN do.
One of the most important and focussed upon FUNdamentals in my 90 day mindbody well-being coaching program, and all of the courses I teach, is MINDSET.
This is how I trained myself - and how I train my clients - to create a lasting healthy lifestyle; by focusing on CANS. What we CAN eat. What we CAN do.
Our mind communicates to our brain and body what is going on; what is important and what needs our attention. This determines our underlying state of functioning and biology in simplistic terms whether we’re in the stress response or the relaxation response. And this is the basis of our well-being or otherwise. We cannot be optimally happy and healthy unless we train our brain and nervous system to stay calm, present and relaxed most of the time, despite what is going on around us. We do this by training our mind. By thinking differently. Perceiving differently. We need to come from an empowered and optimistic space, rather than an overwhelmed, helpless or pessimistic space. We usually do not have control over the things, people and circumstances outside of us. Now more

advertising on Facebook Over the past few weeks I have been speaking with a couple of nine figure companies who have come to realise that dismissing Facebook advertising has been a costly mistake. While their usual marketing methods were effective and made significant sales, by ignoring Facebook they were not capitalising on new opportunities to stake their claim in the digital space and increase their revenue. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics there are now approximately 25 million Australians. Facebook's recent data shows there are now 15 million active Australians on Facebook. Therefore approximately 60% of the total Australian population is an active Facebook user.* Which means, at least every second person is active on Facebook. And there is no other marketing platform that can promote your product or service to your customers as strategically as Facebook can. Here’s why… 1. YOU CAN UPLOAD YOUR CUSTOMER DATABASE I was talking to three Board members of a USA company who very nearly fell off their chairs when I told them this little nugget recently. Their buyer lifecycle is approximately every four years. So what this means for them is, they could upload their customer list in a way that is time specific and start promoting their latest product module to people who purchased four years ago.
2. CREATE A ‘LOOKALIKE’ AUDIENCE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS. Want to reach more people who are likely to buy your products and services? Once you’ve uploaded your customer database you can create a ‘lookalike’ audience which means Facebook will create a custom audience just for you, of people who are like your customers. Imagine that! 3 . REACH 1000 OF YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS FOR AS LITTLE AS $2 What difference would it make to your business if you could reach 1000 people for just $2? Not just any people, but targeted audiences for example: Men between the ages of 35-55 who like golf, Lexus and have teenagers between the ages of 13-17? Then, what if you can continue to advertise to them for as little as $1 a day? You don’t need to imagine any longer. You can have marketing campaigns just like this on Facebook right now. 4. RETARGETING CAPABILITIES Once you have the Facebook pixel (a small piece of code from Facebook) you can retarget people who visit your website based on the pages they visit, the time they spend on the site or the actions they take. The pixel can capture this data regardless if they are on a computer, ipad or their phone - as long as they are logged into Facebook, it all goes back to their Facebook User ID. Which is vastly different to Google which has Cookies that are IP based. Meaning, if someone looks at your website on their phone, you can’t retarget them with your ads when they are on their computer. These four features are just a fraction of the many features that make Facebook advertising so powerful and profitable. ca www.socialcharlie.com

TIME TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
The ultimate pivot?
BY VICTORIA BERRY HBA ENCOMPASS, THE BOOKKEEPER HUB, AND AUTHOR OF ZEST FOR LIFE
As an accountant who has helped hundreds, possibly thousands of businesses over the last 20ish years, I was frustrated trying to help start ups – they needed help but couldn’t afford the $$ or the time to get all the information they needed to know out of my head. So I wrote a book – Zest for Success. This is a short version of chapter one on Planning. If you are using this lockdown time to think about starting your own business, you might want to have a bit of a plan in place: We’ve all heard the phrase before - “failing to plan is planning to fail” - well unfortunately it is true. When you are planning to start a business it is essential that you have a look at all the options that are available to you. Banks and business coaches always talk about this plan that includes budgets and a marketing plan. This chapter aims to give you the basics and make it as simple as possible, so that you can understand where you need to go and to assess whether your business idea will work or not. There is no use going down a detailed business plan path if your idea doesn’t have legs. There is more detailed information in following chapters that puts “meat on the bone” of the plan. This chapter is a basic guideline.
• Strategy – having a clear path to follow • Talent – the talent to show you can do whatever you do better than the others • Flair – the ability to be remarkable, exciting and memorable. It is important to make sure that your business has these in the right proportions. Think of it as a pyramid:
FLAIR
STRATEGY & TALENT
FUNDAMENTALS
Every decision you make during your planning stage needs to keep this pyramid in the back of your mind. You need to make sure that you have the fundamentals under control before you start adding flair (don’t put the cart before the horse) or your business will look like this:
FLAIR
FOUNDATIONS Before looking at planning for your business, we need to step aside for a couple of minutes and think about the foundation of your business. Think of it like a house – you cannot start building walls until the foundations are laid.
STRATEGY & TALENT
FUNDAMENTALS
Businesses need to be a combination of: • Fundamentals or foundations – knowing how to run a business rather than being a good tradesman or technician. The ability to work on the business as well as in the business.
54 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
Let’s look at what I mean by business fundamentals or foundation.
A business (like a house) built on flair and strategy but no fundamentals or foundation is doomed to fail. IT’S JUST LIKE THE THREE LITTLE PIGS: The first little pig built his house out of flair – What a mansion, it looked good but underneath it was “made of straw”. The second little pig built his house with flair, strategy and talent – a nice looking family home but underneath it was “timber”. The third little pig had flair, strategy and talent but he also recognised the need to build his house with all the right fundamentals – a solid family home with brick and tiles (think Sydney!) Along came the big bad wolf (market/ competitors) who blew and blew the houses in: The first and second pigs hadn’t built their house with strong foundations and they were ruined. The third little pig sat drinking beer whilst the “cyclone” passed and then went out and helped the others clean up – he had the right foundations and building strength to survive the onslaught.

2020 has certainly stopped us all in our tracks, with all the chaos and restrictions brought upon us. We would never have imagined in our lifetime we would ever have experienced anything like this, but there is a good sign of hope. “What is that good sign of hope?”, I hear you say? I believe it’s about teaching us to dance in the rain. We have all been put in a situation that we have never known before. There is no need for me to explain this to you, we have seen it all around us, from businesses changing the way they trade to families changing their home life and social media and technology being used to connect us with each other in ways we have never done before. So, looking into the future, I see a future where we are all even more grateful for what we have. I have seen more people down at our local beach than ever before, even more people than over the holidays. We have all stopped to enjoy and appreciate each other and what we have around us. I believe that what we do have is one of the most beautiful places on earth, that we call home. I believe that each and every one of us have been pretty awesome throughout the last few months, we have learnt to adapt in so many ways. Once life gets back to normal, let’s take the biggest learning from this experience into everyday life. I believe that the biggest learning is ‘It’s never about the situation, it’s always about how we deal with it.’

GLORIFIED BUSINESS SLAVE:
the truth hurts
What I’m about to tell you will probably shock you, maybe even offend you.
The difference isn’t in their hairdressing skill. It’s in the marketing and selling of that salon. This is the same across all industries. The single most important rule in business, is to sell.
If you have a sales machine that predictably brings in new customers every day, owning a business can be phenomenal.
Here goes…
Most entrepreneurs don’t own a business, they own a job. You see, they become a slave to their business. They started their business out of passion, but then somewhere along their journey they lose their way. They begin checking their email as soon as their eyes open, they get bogged down in ‘tactical hell,’ dealing with time-sucking activities that drain the life out of them. In comparison, an entrepreneur who owns a thriving, successful business that consistently
If you don’t, owning a business can be unpredictable, unreliable, and stressful.
generates hordes of new leads, clients and revenue each week is relying on automated systems and a team to run the daily operations and ‘grunt work’ of the business and make higher profits. What’s the difference between a hairdresser who opens a salon and 10 years later realises they’ve created a job, not a business and another who starts a hairdressing business and in 10 years has 16 locations and then sells it in a multi-million-dollar deal?
All the shiny marketing tactics, and tools being peddled won’t solve the problem. You need something different – to implement a value driven “selling system.” If you want to know how, call me for a FREE, no-obligation 30-minute strategy session. back on track fast! There are two things that businesses need to do fast, once we return to some kind of normality. 1. Get businesses back on track quickly. 2. Eliminate cash flow vulnerability. If there's one thing that’s been identified over the last couple of months, it's how quickly far too many businesses ran out of cash quickly and were forced to close their doors immediately, as the best option. Business insolvency is a term that’s been mentioned a lot recently and many businesses that run close to insolvent, have just enough cash coming in each month, to just get by and pay the bills again. But the trouble with that scenario is, there’s no growth and if something like this happens, or even the key person in the business is incapacitated for a while, it can spell the end of that business quickly.
There are a number of things that hopefully will change in the way small business owners operate their businesses, so that they never get into this kind of situation, or anything like it, again. • Cash flow planning. According to recent statistics, the majority of SMEs had under 21 days of cash in reserves but judging by how fast many businesses closed their doors, I think it’s even less than that. Part of the solution, is to plan cashflow and the first thing is, if everything stopped, how long can I last? And if it’s 21 days or less, start re-planning!
There is no rocket science here, but if nothing changes, nothing changes. There are some powerful and important lessons that can be learnt from the last couple of months, not just about running our businesses better that gets a better result, but in also supporting each other's businesses too. But if all we do is keep doing what we've been doing for years, the result will be the same. Erwin Brem has owned and run a number of small businesses over the last 33 years, with over 22 years in one of Australia’s largest franchise chains as one of its longest serving and largest franchisees. Over the last four years he has built Mybusinessnow and Business360, a business growth and support program developed from those 33 in business, that is without doubt, the simplest and most uncomplicated way to grow businesses faster, easier and simpler.
• Skills in both owners and their staff. This is a tough time for many businesses. But it’s amazing how the majority that are attempting to stay open, still don’t employ fundamental service standards. Now is the time to service every customer more than ever so they remember that and come back again and again. • Engagement is critical. If businesses don’t start engaging more with anyone that has anything to do with their business, why would they come back? Engagement is the way we deal with our clients, but it's also in the way we support other businesses. The easiest way to support local businesses is to engage with their social media. Share, comment, like. • Make it easy. I know we’re in a technology based time, but! If a customer wants to place an order over the phone do it. If they want to pay you cash, take it. Deal with them in anyway they want, make it easy. Educate them long time. But for now, make it easy.
Our business has also been affected by what’s happened and we are continuing to develop new ways to educate and engage with all businesses owners, so that they get through this and come out the other end a little better prepared, than when they went in.
• Support local first. This will be the hard one. We’ve been driven by the dollar for too long and closed too many industries down, that will be hard to bring back, but if we want a manufacturing industry, we need to buy what they sell, not from overseas just because it's 5% cheaper.

BEATING diabetes In 2018, the life expectancy at birth of Australians was 82.9 years, the sixth highest globally. However, when we examine the medical needs of those over 60, the levels of chronic disease and the steady increase in nursing home residency, the picture is not so rosy. Many would prefer to live shorter lives rather than suffer slow and painful degeneration during the last quarter. The health intelligence acquired and the choices made during the prime years will determine to a great degree the quality of life experienced in old age.
Proper eating and regular exercise will make a big difference. An understanding of the hormone, insulin, is also a factor that may help in the achievement of quality longevity. Insulin is produced in the pancreas and released in response to elevations in blood glucose. It influences many bodily functions. Insulin converts sugar and other food into energy for immediate use, or for storage to be used in times of need. Insulin also regulates the rate of ageing. With a shift in one’s fat-protein-carbohydrate ratio, diabetes mellitus can be avoided, stabilised, managed and even cured. When excessive carbohydrates are ingested over a period of time, insulin receptors in muscle, liver and fat cells fail to take up sugar. This results in levels of glucose building up in the blood. A prolonged elevation in blood glucose can cause heart disease, obesity, impaired eyesight, peripheral vascular disease, high blood pressure and many other diseases. India is the diabetic capital of the world. The Indian Council of Medical Research estimates that India has 65.1 million diabetics requiring regular medication. Only China, with 109.6 million, has more globally. Dr Mohan, president of the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, states diabetes is now found in persons as young as 15 years.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 4,612 Australians died as a direct result of diabetes mellitus in 2018, while an average of over 300 new cases are diagnosed each day. Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease, and the seventh highest cause of death. Over 1.8 million Australians are living with diabetes. 58 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
Approximately 42% of the Indian population are strict vegetarians, consuming a diet that is high carbohydrate, low fat and low protein. If this sector of the country were to replace some of their grain and sweet foods with eggs, soft cheeses, butter and sour cream, and increase the performance of regular physical activity, there would be a significant decrease in diabetes within a few years. America also boasts a high diabetes statistic,
with 9.4% of the population diagnosed. The American Diabetes Association reported 30.3 million sufferers as at January 2019, mostly due to a diet high in sugar, processed grain foods, refined oils and concentrated carbohydrates. It has been found that when insulin is controlled in animals, through a reduction in dietary carbohydrates, they live much longer.
Control carbohydrate consumption. Keep it to around 50 to 80 grams per day (one slice of bread has 15 grams). Sugar and other refined carbohydrates provide quick energy, however they also tend to elevate blood glucose levels. Replace carbohydrates with good fats that provide sustained energy; and maintain a moderate level of protein in the diet. Make vegetables the main source of carbohydrates. Diabetes Type 2 is a lifestyle related disease that is mostly avoidable. Regular exercise along with a little self-control is generally all that is needed to live that much longer. With our magnificent Australian climate, open space and access to quality foods, there is no reason why we cannot take first position in the next world study. a Gary Martin ND Living Valley Health Retreat www.livingvalley.com.au

LIVE CHAT
for your website Do you need it? For many years digital marketing and sales techniques had fallen short of the face-toface approach where consumers entered a store to buy a product. The online culture has shaped consumers who want information faster, need quick answers to their questions and want to engage with your business on their terms. Conventional digital marketing just doesn’t come close to helping these customers.
It’s a scary thought but, online customers want more than only your service or products, they come expecting and already educated on your product. Conversational marketing helps bridge these gaps and allows people visiting your website to get their information faster, have their questions answered and engage with your business on their terms. Here are seven reasons why your customers are looking for live chat on your website: IT’S CONVENIENT Customer experience is more valuable than the products or service you offer. Your visitors are doing just that on your website…walking out. When you engage with a customer who is hot to buy sooner the opportunity to close is higher.
Ecommerce businesses are implementing live chat to aid in the selling of their products by incentivising engagement with discounts, for answering questions live.
THE ‘NOW’ MENTALITY With the likes of Facebook Messenger, WeChat, WhatsApp and other social messaging services, people have come to expect fast response times when they send a message; this is why website forms are more likely to be abandoned; people don’t want to wait for a response. You've read three reasons why your customer wants live chat, but what about the benefits for your business? new normal for business BY SHAREE WEBSTER, CA DIRECTOR, HOLMANS ACCOUNTING & TAXATION
As we get back to the new normal of business, the question is will you be returning to the same business or make changes to ensure the business and you thrive in the new environment? COVID-19 MEASURES – STILL AVAILABLE FOR YOUR BUSINESS No doubt you’ve been reading a lot in relation to what your business can access from the government during the Covid-19 pandemic. If you haven’t already accessed government assistance on offer as your business has not been eligible, Jobkeeper is still available if the business turnover has reduced by 30% compared to the same period last year. There are a lot of factors to consider; best to review the Australian Government business website (www.business.gov.au) or discuss with your accountant. TIPS FOR YOUR BUSINESS TO DANCE IN THE RAIN • GET INTO THE CLOUD All accounting software for small business now have a cloud solution (they have for a while). If you not using one, why not? Providing advice during the business shutdowns/working from home was so much easier when business information was available via a cloud solution. Not only does it provide real time information but you can now save receipts into the software – makes it easier to keeping records. • SETUP THE BUSINESS PORTAL WITH THE ATO Another free system to assist you is making sure your business has setup a business portal with the Tax Office (ATO). A little tricky to set up at the start but it will be so much easier to access all ATO matters at the click of a button.
Visit the ATO website to find out how or discuss with your accountant. • SINGLE TOUCH PAYROLL (STP) Most businesses should now be on STP. The exception is small employers with closely held payees and micro employers (1-4 employees). In response to COVID-19, the ATO has now extended the deadline to 1 July 2021 - from 2020 – to allow businesses time to implement.
We’d suggest all businesses embrace the change and implement as soon as practicable. Digitalising your business practices, will make your life so much easier in the future, so you’ll be dancing in the rain sooner than you think! m www.holmans.com.au Disclaimer: This article contains general information only. GETTING BACK TO THE
Dear Vickie Hi Sonya,
Dear Vickie, let go of I really want to happened something that I’ve tried, when I was 15, st can’t. but honestly, I ju Sonya H.
Have a question? Send your question to Vickie at vmagic@bmmag.com.au
Well first of all it really does depend on what happened, if it was a MAJOR trauma, then my advice is most definitely seek professional help. If on the other hand it is something that happened that upset you, or made you angry, or a fight with someone, then that’s a whole different story. If it is the latter, then here is what I personally do. And believe me I have had things that I held on to for far too long myself. It’s so interesting because we know that it would be better for us to let go, but we just don’t know how. For me the only way I can really let go of something that happened in the past is to look for the learnings, look for a reason to be grateful for the incidence, look for what it taught me, look for something, that because of that particular incident happening, helped me in some way. Now sometimes to be honest the learning might be something not to do. But for the most part, I try as hard as possible to look for something that I could learn that will serve me in a positive way. I am then able to be grateful first of all for the learning, and then for the person that gave me the learning, this is how I am then able to let it go and forgive them and maybe even forgive me. Now let’s be real here, I don’t have to, if I don’t want to, forgive them in person. But I do have to forgive them in my heart. Sometimes for me this can be by writing them a letter, a letter that I never send. But you know what, the upset gets lifted, the pain gets lifted and I can move forward without the upset, without the anger. Hope that helps.

MAXIMISE YOUR IMMUNITY
and health
Most people don’t know that Magnesium is one of the most important micronutrients for your body. Its role in our biological system has been extensively researched with scientific studies showing that Magnesium has a particularly strong relationship with our immune system. In fact, it is involved in more than 600 reactions in your body. Some of the vital roles of Magnesium in our bodies is to convert food into energy, create new proteins from amino acids, create and repair DNA, provides relaxation of muscles, and helps regulate our neurotransmitters which allows for messages to be sent throughout your brain and nervous system. These are all imperative in ensuring your body’s immunity is working at optimum performance to ward off viruses. Unfortunately, many people are deficient in their magnesium intake. Another challenge that plagues our immune system is STRESS. Our immune system can become overwhelmed when the stress hormone cortisol increases to high levels. This causes our immune systems to fail. In addition to the direct impact of stress on our immune function, unmanaged stress can influence our sleep patterns, our mood, our dietary intake and our physical activity levels. All of these factors are associated with detrimental effects on the immune system. Floatation Therapy is a very simple, affordable, and effective method of ensuring your body receives a sufficient dose of Magnesium. At Zen Den Floathouse, our Floatation Pods are packed with 500kg of Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts). The Magnesium is easily absorbed through your skin while you float. Your body uses this Magnesium to ensure your immunity systems are operating at optimum capacity. Floats not only allow a large amount of Magnesium absorption, but the relaxed environment allows stress levels to plummet. Floating allows deep physical and mental relaxation within a single session. CAMARADERIE AND NEW BEGINNINGS Through the past few weeks, I have seen a revival of certain lifestyle qualities perhaps lost in some respects by society pre COVID-19. I have seen a spike in vegetable, herb and flower seed sales, a sign people are growing their own produce and pretty flowers in the garden. A run on flour, sugar, yeast indicating locals are returning to baking homemade bread, cakes and rolling fresh pasta to creating home-made dishes more than likely prepared with love from fresh and delicious produce grown in their back yards. It is reminiscent of an older generation and a rekindling of transforming our home into our castle; it is nice to see. I have had a swarm of enquiries from local producers and a myriad of fellow Sunshine Coast business owners looking for unique ways to collaborate. I love these discussions; how to utilise an entire supply chain from primary production to manufacturing to presenting something special to our

I have witnessed the very best and very little of the worst from people, fearing what might be ahead at the outset of this weird story we all find ourselves a part of. I have witnessed the emergence of new leaders rising through testing times when true qualities push to the fore by circumstance, blossoming like sunshine on a winter’s day. I have witnessed others fall away because it is too hard or simply completely necessary to remove themselves from harms way and stay at home, but with the supportive cheer from friends and colleagues to just stay well and take care. I have witnessed random acts of kindness, camaraderie and new beginnings. As we unite through varying degrees of difficulty around the world, I can’t help noticing there is a sense of gratefulness for simpler things, a greater need to connect, time to lend a hand, show support and a willingness to help our neighbour. experienced and professional PROPERTY MANAGER
Last edition we discussed whether you should use a property manager. To develop this further, I have set out nine key benefits of using an experienced and professional property manager. Benefit 1 – Fewer problem tenants - property managers are experts at screening tenants, reference checking and reviewing rental history to recommend high quality tenants. You, of course, have the final say. Benefit 2 – Avoid unpleasant confrontations – a property manager is a buffer between you and the tenant and will deal with problems from late payments through to damaged property. Benefit 3 – Tenants feel supported – property managers are more accessible to address problems all hours of the day and our negotiating power with tradespeople ensures the best price on all maintenance jobs.
the same legislative requirements as property managers in their dealings with tenants. This means you will need to stay abreast of constantly changing legal requirements, so choosing a property manager may save you time and money over the long term. Benefit 8 – Comprehensive insurance – landlords with a property manager may be eligible for more comprehensive insurance cover and other advantages. Benefit 9 – Reduce your risk – by engaging a property manager you reduce the chance of having a vacant property, lowering your risk of lost income. Next edition: What to ask a potential property manager. m www.mooloolaba.ljhooker.com.au
Benefit 4 – Decrease tenant turn over – good property managers know how to keep their tenants happy so they are more likely to want to stay and renew their lease. Benefit 5 – On time rent – consistent rent collection is the key to receiving payments on time. Property managers will enforce lease policies if payments aren’t received. Benefit 6 – Less stress – someone else is managing your property and tenants. Benefit 7 – Strict legislative requirements - private owners are bound by

together!
See the end of this article to go into the draw to win one of FOUR half pages in our next issue. It is more important than ever before to support local business. How can you support local? What can you personally do? You could purchase a coffee or take away meal from your local restaurant that is trying to keep it’s head above water right now. You could seek out local businesses for absolutely anything you want to buy. You can buy online from local businesses too.
I know we are all looking for the best price. But just remember that when you support a local business, you are helping to feed the people we are walking past on the beach, or down the street. You are potentially long term actually helping to support your own business, because clearly if we all take on this attitude it will become a boomerang, right. Now I am most definitely not saying that we should not support the world as a whole, I personally believe in supporting starving people in third world countries too, I believe we are all OF THE WORLD. So I do think that when it comes to getting ourselves the best price, we

can’t be silly about this, I am not going to pay three times the price for something just to support local, but if I save that much money, guess what, I have all that left over money to spend locally. So, there is also common sense that has to kick in here too. But for the most part if I can buy something from you that is a similar (ish) price, and you are local, then let’s start a culture here on the Sunny Coast to do just that. Let’s start a culture where we truly look to supporting each other FIRST. Sure there will be times that you just can’t, but what if you actually made a pact with yourself to at least TRY, to at least have a look locally. I love the IGA’s I think they really get it, they are community based and they really do attempt to stock local products from their community, they attempt to buy local and sell local. I love this, how could we take some wisdom from their example? Roz White, our cover girl from our March issue says, “Looking after locals and our local community is what we are all about. I think there is most definitely something to be learnt from this? So what could you personally do to support your local community more?
And what could we do to support you? Go to the Matters Magazine Facebook page and let us know to go in the draw to a twelve month advertising package worth over $6,000. All you have to do is share this magazine on your Facebook and Linked in pages, and then let us know where you shared to. That’s it. You will then be in the draw to win.
But as well as that I think the Sunshine Coast will win. This is a way of us really showing our support for each other, if you let us all know what you do, then if we need what you sell or provide, we can choose you. f To go in the draw to win a twelve month advertising package worth over $6,000. You just need to do two things. 1. Share this issue of the magazine on your social media platforms www.mattersmagazine.com.au/currentissue 2. Go to our Facebook page and tell us what you do, maybe even give us an offer. Give us a reason to choose you

CONFESSIONS OF A
ghostwriter You may have felt an inner calling to write a book, or been told by someone else – perhaps multiple someone’s - that your life story is incredible. You may even have made a start, stalled and left it by the wayside. Maybe you’ve even been too afraid to take the first step!
There are so many ways a book can take your personal profile or your business to the next level.
I find clarity is key in the early stages of writing a book.
Those who are able to align their book with their business or professional goals have the potential to unlock new opportunities or even lift their price ceiling to attract higher end clients.
You need clarity on what you have to offer.
This is because being an author of a high quality book is still held in high esteem in professional circles. You are elevated to expert status and with some great marketing behind you, the potential to leverage your book to become an industry commentator, a renowned leader, a sought-after consultant and even a speaker on a global scale is limitless – you can take it as far as you want to. The key is in the foundations – in creating a book that connects as strongly with your core message, values and beliefs as it does with your readers. When they truly resonate with you and your message, they feel like they know you, will like you and trust the product or service that you offer. However, finding the time to write, uncertainty about your message and feeling insecure about a process that is unchartered territory can be some of the biggest handbrakes for aspiring authors – they can even nip at the heels of established authors who are looking to make an even bigger splash with their consecutive books – no one is immune. So what is the solution? GET CLEAR. It’s simple, but not easy. 72 DIGITAL DANCING ISSUE
You need clarity of your purpose.
You need clarity on who you are speaking to. The great news? There is a simple first step! Schedule some time in to really think about these five key questions: 1. Why do you want to write a book? 2. What is your lived or learned experience? 3. What lessons have they taught you? 4. How can your message inspire, educate or improve the lives of your readers? 5. How would you feel if you were able to change someone’s life by sharing what you know? Letting these questions ruminate in your mind, or even taking them with you to your journal time if you regularly jot your thoughts down, will give you a great head start in solidifying the best direction and strongest message for your book.
Imagine being a published author by the end of 2020 or poised to launch your first book in early 2021?!
trying to remember the relevant, exciting and challenging things you have gone through to get to where you are. You can maximise your time through engaged and thorough interviews that will give you brand new insights into your journey and what your purpose is for becoming an author – a transformational process that I like to call The Phoenix Phenomenon. It will see you become more passionate about your business and your book than ever before. With full concept to completed book packages available, you will know your book will become a reality and this will free you up to maintain your focus on living your life, spending time with your family and innovating in your business while the manuscript and then the physical books come to life with an expert at the helm. So are you ready to seize the day and open up a whole new world of opportunities for yourself and your business by becoming a published author? Head to www.roxannewriter.com.au to book in an obligation-free call. ca
It can be a reality if you simply make a start today. My passion is making the journey to becoming an author one of certainty, ease and even fun. When you have a ghostwriter like me in your corner, you don’t have to spend hours at a time behind the keyboard,

for winter
Winter time is a fabulous time in business to retreat and focus on your stats, KPI’s, target markets, marketing plans and how things are going in the business. Generally speaking, your clientele are doing exactly the same and wanting to retreat and transform themselves. If you have winter type products or you’re an accountant who will extremely busy this time of year, the rest of you should make it a ritual and must, to look at your own goals and dreams. Review what has been happening in your personal and private life and see If you have achieved exactly what you want. And if not design, plan, prepare and get ready to launch what you want. June energies will have a feeling of MUST complete adventures, products, projects and any last minute tasks you need to do. This is the peak time to do this and have success.
July is a time of retreat, reflect and review. The 3 R’s. yes keep working or if you are like me, reflecting and reviewing my business whilst on holidays. August is the best energetic time to plan as you are getting ready for all launches within Spring. Now when I say plan, I don’t mean for the year you are in but the following year. If you have done your planning you will know your targets etc ready to project for the next few years.
Winter is the best time to design your destiny when it comes to manifesting your dreams and Law of Attraction as it is a time of new beginnings. As you plan, you create an energy to the universe and quantum law which hears your demands and starts making it happen for you. THIS TYPE OF VIDEO GETS
more engagement
THAN ANYTHING ELSE ONLINE Attention: If you are interested in growing your business using digital marketing, please read this now…
And it’s taking the social media world by storm. WHY DO THEY WORK SO WELL? Three reasons: 1. The video headline grabs your attention,
This morning, I was scrolling through all my social media feeds. And there was one thing that immediately stood out to me; some content pieces magically grabbed my attention, while others did not grab me at all and I just kept on scrolling right past them!
2. The visual footage draws you in, and... 3. The captions at the bottom engages you like crazy. Combined together, these three factors massively add to the engagement level of your videos. Which in turn can help you drive more traffic and sales to your business.
What magical power did some of these content pieces possess that hypnotised me so thoroughly and got me to actually stop and consume it? And heaven forbid, to even leave a comment and share it with my friends?
A friend of mine, Marcus Sheridan who runs IMPACT, the popular global content marketing brand, said he got a 300% increase by simply using this style of video. And this is just one of many cases. There’s a reason why folks like Gary Vaynerchuk use it.
Video. Yup, that’s right. But not just ANY kind of video. I’m talking about well-crafted videos, with a “scroll-stopping” headline at the top, the video content in the middle, and captions at the bottom, like you can see in the image. You may have seen these kind of videos from popular outlets like Buzzfeed, TED talks or recent online celebs like Gary Vaynerchuk.
