The Brief 1/3

Matthew Chatfield OUGD 301 Brief 4 It’s Nice That

The Brief It’s Nice That’s audience has developed dramatically over the past few years – reaching everyone from freshers to creative directors. However, students have always been an integral part of the organisation’s DNA, and It’s Nice That now want new and exciting ways to stay engaged with their original audience.

‘It’s Nice That’, wanted to get back in touch with their target audience; of young student designers. They wanted a concept, which would appeal to them with this is mind. Through looking at design blogs and social arts led blogs I have found that there was an acute trend forming. “Soft Porn” and partial nudity is everywhere at the moment there isn’t really any way of escaping it. Designer’s love looking at good design and this is what I am tapping into. “Soft Porn” for Designers. It is a showcase of the best student design for other students to admire.

Helvetica I have used Helvetica, as it universally know as a welldesigned highly recognizable typeface. Helvetica has a readability and style that fits in with the target audience, students and young adults. It also works very well across the range of disciplines graphic design, fashion, and photography among others making it very versatile.

The Papers 2/3

“Soft Porn” consists of a fold out document releases each week, which focuses on a different discipline within design each issue. The documents are 2 colour screen-printed doubled sided. This is an inexpensive, productive and interesting way to print a large amount of issues. As it will be screen-printed it will appeal more to young designers, as they tend to enjoy the process and have access to it the majority of the time. The colours are vibrant to make them stand out more when put up on a wall or among other leaflets.

The Issues They feature student designers along with one institution in each issue. In order to help advertisement of student courses allowing an insight to what other institutions are up to. This is good practice for students as they can find themselves in a “bubble” resulting in the majority of the time only experiencing work from their own course. People want to see what everyone else is up to and this makes it a functional way to do so.

Distribution As well as the printed material you can also go see the featured work in full colour online through the It’s Nice That website. It will be a subsection, aimed for students and even employers to look at the new talent. The printed leaflets will be sent to university art departments and art institutes. This will be help promote “Soft Porn” and hopefully help get more submissions for the next issue.
