D R E YA GLASS
With pieces featured in the Esplanade’s
lounge and inspiration of work taken from her love of the sea, local glass artist Dreya Bennett takes us on her journey as we find out how she got to where she is today.

F R IE N DS OF T HE ESPL ANADE
How long have you been a fused glass artist and what made you decide to use the medium you work with? I have been a full time glass artist for 2 years but I cut my first piece of glass (and conversely got cut by my first piece of glass!) while studying at Falmouth University in my teens when I decided to go to evening classes in stained glass. I was instantly hooked on the process and by the translucency and especially the incredibly beautiful shadows that glass casts. After my foundation course I decided to study glass further and did a degree in 'architectural stained glass', at Swansea. Though distracted from my glass for many years I continued to make small projects for myself and friends and taught myself how to fuse glass.
"The sea is another huge passion of mine and I love to try and capture a little of its magic in glass."
What inspired your passion for glass? I love designing a piece and then the process of trying to recreate the ideas in my head into a physical piece of glass, and all the results, good, bad, surprising and just plain awful that happen along the way! The processes and the possibilities are endless I am constantly excited by new methods, new ideas and new techniques. It is impossible to become bored with it, as every piece can spark a new idea and direction.
Can you tell us about the process of making your work? The sea is another huge passion of mine and I love to try and capture a little of its magic in glass. I have tried to show the many different colours and moods the sea has; by starting with a clear glass as the sea itself is clear. The seas colours come from the reflection of the sky and seeing the sand and rocks though the water.
Can you discuss the significance of landscape and nature in your work?
I use frits (different grades of crushed glasses), enamels, copper oxides etc to add colour, I then cut many different pieces of glass and layer them over and over to create depth and interest to my work. The work can be in the kiln from 16 hours to 4 days depending on the size and thickness of the piece.
I moved to Cornwall from Africa when I was 9 and little did I know how much it would shape my life and how lucky I was. Even before we moved back to England I was always a water baby. We spent most of our free time in a pool or on the beach, so the sea and its different moods have always been in my life, especially its sound, which can be

carried many miles inland on the wind. It is a constant background noise to life in Cornwall. It is all encompassing; its colour sounds and smell, its reflections, translucent quality and constant movement can hold your attention like nothing else. I love to look at it, be in it or on it. The sea has also given me two amazing careers. As a professional kitesurfer, traveling to some amazing locations and setting a world record, by kitesurfing from Cornwall to Ireland, and now as the inspiration for my work trying to capture a bit of my love and the magic the sea has for me in my glass work. To me glass has a similar quality to water (in fact technically glass is a fluid), as such it is the perfect medium to express it. It echos the feel and quality of water, with its colours, reflections and translucent quality. It is enigmatic you can look at it, or through it. It is there and not there. The sea can change, minute by minute as the sun and clouds pass overhead. Glass also plays with light, and changes through the day as the light moves across it or through it, casting reflections and colours.
Ocean Currents are deep satisfyingly tactile, thick chunks of glass that draw you into the depths of the piece, where you can see the bubbles and currents sliding though the work, colours mixing and becoming more intense as they overlap each other, or you can look through the sides to see the layers and the bubbles rising up from the depths. I am working on taking this range thicker still as the edges of the work fascinate me. Lastly, a sea bed range which is the most incomplete project and is proving the steepest learning curve, but also the most exciting. I have been learning to 3D model and have been using a 3D printer to print my ideas. The models are then cast to create molds in which I am casting glass. I’ll admit the results so far are very crude, but the opportunities and possibilities this workflow and method open up is soooo incredibly exciting. I have to constantly battle to remind myself though that I have to run a business and earn a living and can’t 'play' every day! I am privileged and so lucky to be able to make glass for a living, I pinch myself every time I unlock and step into my studio in the mornings.
Whats next? I currently have 3 new projects that I am working on all in varying stages. I have developed a range of, “Sea Anemones” in three different sizes which are mounted so that they stand slightly off a wall and can be arranged in huge groups or small personal clusters to suit any space. I particularly love the reflections that they throw onto the wall behind them and am very excited that the mounting posts, (called a stand off) can be replaced by a stand off with LED’s in it enabling it to become a subtle lighting feature as well.

here the waves are less crowded and the rock pools glisten in the Cornish sun, the South side of Fistral Beach is where you’ll find The Quiksilver Surf School in Newquay. Although they’re most known for their surf lessons, the Quiksilver Surf School Newquay are also a dab hand at teaching other thrilling water-based activities. Let the surf take a back seat, let’s focus on alternative reasons to get into the water.
COASTEERING Climb a rockface and jump right in. Coasteering is the ultimate rush and an epic way to explore the coastline, taking you into an alien environment. Think scaling barnacle covered rocks to diving into the Atlantic and into remote caves, faraway coves and finding secluded beaches.
ROXY WEEKENDS The prefect combination of surf, relaxation and fun. Roxy weekends are suitable for all levels and include two nights accommodation at our beachside hotel alongside an itinerary of surf, yoga and spa, based on the world-famous Fistral Beach in Newquay.
STAND UP PADDLE BOARDING Stand up paddle boarding is an ideal relaxing way to play in the ocean and perfect for days with no waves!
BODYBOARDING If you want the thrill of racing through the surf but don’t fancy surfing, then body boarding is the one for you. Grab a board and ride the crest of the wave back to shore.
Think calming sea-scapades or floating along the tropical feels of the Gannel Estuary. A great way for beginners to try a water sport.

The golden sands of Newquay.
Fistral/ Our playground, and famous for surfing, Fistral Beach is not only iconic in Newquay but is significant for putting our Cornish fishing town on the map globally. Choose from the North or South side, watch the surfers take on the waves, grab some fish and chips or head to the bar on the beach for a cooling Cornish Rattler, sandy toes have never felt so good.

Little Fistral/ Sometimes missed by those heading to Newquay’s famous surfing beach, Little Fistral is a small, rocky inlet adjacent to Fistral Beach and perfect for those who want to escape the crowds. The perfect sunbathing spot on the sunnier days, and still within walking distance of the hotel and the town, this little cove sets the scene of a tropical destination. Great Western/ One of the quieter beaches, tucked away by the cliffs, Great Western is great for families as well as surfers. Tuck into a gourmet burger, the Cornish way at Slope Restaurant and enjoy a local beer in hand whilst soaking up one of many of the incredible views that Newquay has to offer.
52
Towan/ Located in the heart of the town, Towan beach is home to the Blue Reef Aquarium and is bordered by the towns Harbour. The popular beach is sheltered by Towan Head and provides smaller waves perfect for the little ones to give surfing a go, or to simply take a cooling dip during the warmer months. Tolcarne/ Venture out to the other side of Newquay and discover the beautifully nestled sands. Head down the steps where you’ll find a beach shop equip will all your beach day needs. Tolcarne’s beachfront restaurant, The Colonial is the perfect spot for lazy lunches and pre-dinner cocktails and the handy on-site surf school offers surf lessons for all levels.
Lusty Glaze/ Take a walk-through town and you’ll stumble across the “activity” beach of Lusty Glaze. Here you’ll find plenty of beachside activities to keep the whole family entertained. Think zip-wiring over the sands and jet skiing out of the bay. Lusty Glaze can only be accessed by steps, so be wary when carrying the beach essentials. The beach is home to the restaurant at lusty glaze where you’ll find an amazing afternoon tea and four-legged family members are always welcome. Porth/ At first glance, the golden sands of Porth beach seem to go on and on an on. A popular pick for families where the little ones are safe to place in the shallows, whilst the big boys head out to the surf in the distance. The Mermaid onsite pub, is a locals hang-out with great Sunday lunches and an outside seating area.

- Everything you need to know to keep your day at the beach safe and most importantly, having fun. The area between the redand-yellow flags is patrolled by lifeguards. This is the safest place to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables.
The orange windsock means there are offshore winds. Never use an inflatable when you see the sock flying as the wind could push you offshore very quickly.
The area between black-and-white chequered flags is a designated area for watersports such as surfing and kayaking. Never swim or bodyboard here.
The red flag indicates that it is dangerous to swim or get in the water. Never go in the water when the red flag is flying.

"Bring the feeling of the Cornwall coast inside."
Looking out to the world-famous surfing beach Fistral, the Esplanade lounge has panoramic views that are truly unforgettable, so when it came to give the lounge a little refresh, inspiration wasn’t hard to find. When designing the new concept, Creative Director Gayle Nettleton embraced the light and bright surroundings of The Esplanade to bring the feeling of the Cornwall coast inside. A palette of refreshingly cool blue hues, with a touch of lighter tones to reflect the sandy playground that we call our own, alongside new subtle modern touches, truly encases the feeling of our beachside rooted location.
Working with local designers to include Tom Raffield alongside sourcing local materials from Cornish timber yards is what makes the light, bright and natural tones partnered with the blue and green colours, reflective of the ocean, work so well together.
59
"Using products manufactured locally where possible, for example the Tom Raffield lights, the sweet chestnut table tops hand picked from a local timber supplier and the beautiful glass artwork by a local designer completely enhances the scheme. I’m delighted with the finish and hope to provide an inviting cool and comfortable area for guests to relax and enjoy our spectacular views. - Gayle Nettleton 60

On hearing this distinctive cry, fisherman would drop whatever they were doing and man the main type of fishing boat, called a ‘Seine’, along with the smaller Volyer’s and Lurkar’s and launch them at the pilchard shoals. The Seine boats would be guided to where the fish were by the Huer from his high vantage point using two branches or gorse bushes covered in cloth acting as an early form of semaphore. The different types of boat would work together using long nets to catch the fish and then land their catch back at the harbour. The catch would be either processed or transported by tram to the railway line.
"
, a v e "h eva ! h A symbol of Newquay’s large scale commercial fishing past, prominently overlooking Newquay Bay on Towan Head is the newly restored Huers Hut. A small building dating back to the mid19th Century manned by a ‘Huer’ who were employed by the competing ‘Fish Cellars’ companies.
The Huer would watch out to sea all day as well as moon-lit nights, looking out for the giant shoals of glinting pilchards or other fish passing by – the distinctive ripple and colour of the pilchard shoals were called 'Shirming' locally. Once a shoal was spotted, the Huer would use a giant megaphone-like trumpet to announce their presence, shouting out ‘Hubba, Hubba’ or ‘Heva, Heva’.

Even before the fishing, there were indications that some kind of small dwelling had always been where the Huer’s hut is. There is speculation that it may have been either a hermitage, religious retreat for contemplation or an early shipping beacon akin to lighthouse or maybe a combination of all three.
