My name is Zhenfeng Huang, and I am currently a first-year master student majoring in Architecture at Aalto University. I browsed some of your works on your company's website and I liked them very much. The following is my resume and background information.
After completing my undergraduate degree in architecture in China, I participated in practical work. Before continuing my master's study, I had more than 5 years of work experience, including 2 years as an assistant architect at CCDI Group and 3 years as an architect at Atelier Xi. In my past work experience During this period, I have participated in projects in different scales, types, and design periods, from small-scale space design to large-scale urban design, from community renovation to cultural and educational complexes, and from conceptual competitions to construction implementation. These experiences have helped me a lot. It not only gave me a comprehensive understanding of architectural design and how to be an architect but also trained my work skills, which allowed me to master the use of various software (Rhino, Sketchup, Revit, CAD, Archicad, Vray, Enscape, Grasshopper, Adobe Suits, etc.) and communication skills. In addition, in my past work, as a team member, I have won some different awards, including the AIA(HK) MERIT AWARD For Architecture 2024 & For Sustainability 2024 and a series of First Prizes in several international public buildings competitions. I am very honored that my work could gain such high recognition. This valuable work experience has given me the confidence to face future work challenges!
I love architecture, and I hope to expand my understanding and cognition of architecture in different environments. So after working for a few years, I stopped my job and went to Europe to study. At present, I am about to finish my first year of master's studies. 01 THE PAST MEET THE PRESENT

This project is a rethink of the relationship between the present and the past.
As a traditional village, WenChong village was a local recorder of traditional life culture. However, the traditional space texture of WenChong village which contains two main spatial typology - "Lane" and "Yard" are constantly destroyed due to the rough and rapid urbanization over the past few decades. A rift exists between the present and the past in Wenchong village...
My design is a community center which introduces modern life activities into this "broken" place. Based on the reference to traditional space typology, I devised a light-receiving structure, which can not only reflect past spatial memories, but also intervene in the present life events. When the familiar light emerges in the current life scene, memory and reality mingled in this space Ultimately, the past can be connected with the present and the local life history can continue through the narrative of space

This project is a rethink about the inner connection between people who are placed in quarantine
There are over 10 kilometer separation walls built by the communities and citizens in the north urban area to prevent the expansion of slums in Lima, Peru. The physical barriers against the poor looking for a better life. What's worse is that there is an invisible wall higher than the physical wall - the mental separation between the rich and the poor
This design focuses on people's inner isolation issue (prejudice and inferiority), which is more severe than segregation in the physical world and aims to connect people's estranged souls. Based on the common religious beliefs of residents on both sides, I designed a chapel crossing the segregated wall. The common belief becomes the stepping stone of spiritual communication . Through the control of spatial form and vison direction, as well as the focus on the structure perception, a strong atmosphere specifically a spatial tension , can be created. Ultimately this intense sense of horizontal connection to against vertical isolation emerging in space, arousing people's soul connection, which is the basis for those people moving towards a united social community...

This project is a combination of two spatial sensations which reflect the characteristics of the environment and aim to bring about a rich reading experience
The bookstore is located at the boundary between the forest and the lake , where the two spatial environments meet and transform. Interestingly, in classical Chinese aesthetics, the reading experience is closely related to the natural environment . The unique natural environment can evoke specific moods and emotions in readers. For example, in ancient Chinese paintings, we can see the literati reading freely and easely in the foreset or quietly contemplating with a book in the lake. Reading behavior is closely related to environmental characteristics
Inspired by this, the bookstore design focuses on capturing the two environmental qualities of the site (lake and forest) and generating two types of reading spaces that reflect these elements.People can switch between two different space, just as people can freely travel between a forest and a lake, thus, they can feel different environmental atmosphere, which enriches their reading experience.

The two prototypes of the lake and forest are combined into the final form, which is a blender of two environmental qualities (Forest - Freely and Easely & Lake - Carmly and Lonely) and encourages people to move freely between different interfaces

This project exploring the adaptability housing based on wood materials research. We focus on the materials , assembly , form and social sustainability of spatial units prototype.
We rethink the adaptability through a set of antonyms Permanent & Change . The design concept Heavy & Light go through with it, which shows in different spatial layer and rooms enclosed by them. The heavy cordwood facade is permanent and brings a sense of beloning which happened before adaptability Beloning sense can make people live in the space and do changing with time rather than relocate or demolish. Light frame is allow for changing with time within this thick envolope. Here, lightness means flexibility and adaptability The assemble post and beam frame allows for different space configurations in a long-term perspecive. The semi-warm space be define by the shelf system and atrium bring the high flexibility which respond to daily changing.
Between Heavy & light, the building create a space in different timescale adaptability . Living inside, people can reflect their life, what is need to change and what is need to keep?

The project is an abstract representation of a natural landscape in an urban setting environment
Karst cave is a local characteristic natural landscape in Guizhou. For a long time, people on this land have established life connection and telepathy with the natural landscape in this strange terrain. How to respond to the memory of this landscape land with contemporary space art and create a natural imagination in this urban park land is the original intention of design.
Sculpted from within, the three buildings stand above the natural terrain in a cavern-like form, presenting the beauty of structural power in a suspended moment of balance . The building is composed of white cave stone with natural texture and curved stainless steel with artificial properties, responding to the state of the building between nature and artificial. The three sculptures will serve as places for multiple activities like reading, performing, and meditating.
The project not only represents the mission of space aesthetics, but also stimulates the infinite imagination of life and the future

Qiaochengbei Park is situated on a hillside covered with pristine forest, surrounded by high density urban development in the central area of Shenzhen.
How to incorporate essential public service facilities into this untouched forest while preserving the original natural environment presents a challenge for architects. The architects proposed preserving all native trees and strategically interweaving two service buildings, one with curvilinear outline and one angular, among the existing trees and inserting them into the natural topography with minimal disturbance to the site.
To facilitate a harmonious dialogue between the new structures and the natural environment, weathering steel, which ages well over time, was chosen as the building material. Initially resembling the color of the native tree trunks in the forest, it gradually changes color over time and develops a protective layer of rust, reducing maintenance need of the building facade.
Given the hot and humid climate, the architectural design incorporates vertical lattices and perforated metal in the facades to provide ample shade and ventilation, reducing reliance on air conditioning
Overall, traditionally defined “service spaces” such as restrooms, vending machines, drinking water stations, nursing rooms, and rest areas for cleaners are integrated as vital components of the enclosed public space, transforming the park toilets into a miniature village nestled in the forest, serving as a comprehensive community service facility and gathering place.

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS
Unlike traditional public toilet designs featuring white tiles or terrazzo, this project embraces a sense of “shelter,” reminiscent of Junichiro Tanizaki’s description in In Praise of Shadows — where one can sit in dim light, immersed in the faint reflections, listening to the sound of rain, and contemplating the natural scenery outside.
This design philosophy moves beyond the typical binary oppositions found in modern public spaces—such as light and dark, nature and artificiality—instead allowing them to merge into an organic whole. Here, “shadows” are not flaws but a way of perceiving beauty—through layers of light and shadow, the warmth of materials, and the interaction between people and their surroundings, creating a profound and tranquil spatial experience. Just as the Chinese characters for“light” (光) and “shade” (阴) combine to form “time” (光阴), this philosophy suggests that time is not merely passing but is instead something to be felt in the interplay of light and darkness.

This project is a collection device of multiple landscapes, its spiral form symbolizes the convergence of 3 different landscapes
The project is located on a triangular hillside of the Longgang River. This is a site with three different landscape views. Unlike the local traditional watchtower with negative Windows, the scheme has several positive openings. Three standard boxes are stacked in height at an angle of 120°, forming a spiral form that faces in 3 directions to capture 3 different landscapes. Below them is a service space with public toilets and food vending machines for the public. In terms of material, given the abundant forest resources and the wild atmosphere in the site, we choose pine wood and corten steel as the main material, emphasizing harmony with the forest environment.

This project is a reflection on the vertical context of the city . Human beings pursue efficiency and image in conquering height, but their inner appeal is more inclined to the standard lifestyle , a complex rooted in land Thus, we keep the building low to emphasize the horizontality compared with the skyscraper around the site. By creating the multi-level system blurs the traditional boundaries of underground and underground spaces to establish a horizontal living mode The building provides maximum space flexibility free flowing spaces like a park and the individual and collective activities of the citizens will participate in the overall shaping of the built environment.
The project adopts rectangular steel inclined column + steel truss + steel frame tube structure system, and 6 rows of W-shaped oblique columns are evenly arranged in the whole building plane. The structural reinforcing layers are connected by trusses between the inclined columns to form a space structure system to realize local column-free space and large span suspension. Pick, while the other floors of the building are supported by hanging the pillars on the truss floor. On the basis of the structural framework, the two vertical traffic elevators and escalators are added to form a framework for structural and basic functions to meet the design and use requirements of space free layout.

Typical school designs start from the ground floor and go up to five floors. Students are far away from the ground activity floor. The rigid model is the yield of the high-density environment, which causes monotony and is not conducive to carrying out interclass activities and play.

The traditional model of the school presents a horizontal layout, while the vertical circulation of the high-rise building on the north is organized through elevators, which is of poor accessibility
The complex building on the north side is put down to form a composite shared interlayer with high accessibility, which connects the upper classrooms and the large-scale public functional block on the lower floor
The classroom blocks are divided to form group teaching module, creating a pleasant scale of outdoor communication and interaction space

This project is a reflection on the high density context of the city. It is a try to expand space in a way that increases density but reduces monotony caused by the high density Guiyuan middle school will be expanded from the original 36 classes to 60 classes. We respect the high density of the city, and try to create a rich scale under high density. Through the strategy of "multiple horizon, compound and multiple, aerial connection", to provide a rich learning place, in appropriate scale, with lively campus atmosphere for the highdensity place.

FIELD SURVEY IN HISTORICAL BLOCKS OF HUI ZHOU (2016-2017)
like Chinese traditional ancient architecture, which records our history and culture. Unfortunately, many traditional buildings have disappeared in the process of rapid urbanization. I took part in a summer activity about historic district conservation. I am mainly involved in 3 types of work: The Architectural Quality Classfication, Facade Composition Analysis and Spatial Scale Analysis of Ancient Street. All of these works will serve as the basic research for the future repair work.
At the same time, the results of field research also serve as a background study of this paper - Study on the Necessity of Huizhou Legislation to Protect Historical and Cultural City District, Lin Chaohui, Huang Zhenfeng, Lai huai, published in HUAZHONG ARCHITECTURE, 06/2016, Which is Promoting the local government legislates to protect historical districts of Huizhou.
I had the honor to participate in the basic research and typesetting of the paper with the help of my teacher and classmates.

COLOR DRAWING AND PEN SKETCH (2013)
I like to capture moments on a journey with my pen. Old brick walls and roadside plants in the old Hui Zhou street exude a strong favor of traditional life. The Bank of China Tower's appearance shows the prosperity of Hong Kong.
I drew a sketch to record these feelings.
