T
ransformations are just plain cool. We have been producing the Amazing Transformations issue for eight years now and I must say, this takes me a little longer to produce then all of our other editions. It takes longer to produce because it is an orchestra of organization to compile 26 different stories in one issue, but that is not the only reason, to be candid, I find myself lost in the content. I daydream a bit and that’s the whole point of this issue: to lose yourself in each and every story. I find myself looking at particular details in each story and find myself saying “that’s pretty cool” and “ that’s a great idea” to the point that I make Shelley crazy because her response is “what did you say?”! I love the process in creating a home and I say this every year: I love working with the various trades on new builds because it showcases the talent that surrounds us, but I truly love working on the transformation issue because it showcases the creativity of those same individuals. Congratulations to all of the firms who participated in this years issue, you all killed it! Our next issue is the “Annual Interior Design Issue”. This has grown over the years and we have a unique opportunity to spend some quality time with our Interior Designers, which we really enjoy. Meeting with our partner’s gives us an opportunity to pick their brains and collaborate on new pertinent content, this is what keeps us fresh and why we are as much a trade publication as well as a consumer magazine. We are excited for the next issue of East Coast Home + Design as will mark our 10th Anniversary in publishing. Looking back to 2004, it is amazing how many things have changed in the shelter industry, not only from a design standpoint, but from an economic standpoint as well. I think that if we all look back from 2004 to 2014, what we have endured as a society is unprecedented. triking the right balance between respect for the old and integration of the new was the greatest challenge for the team at Charles Hilton Architects while reconstructing this American brick Georgian in Greenwich, CT. “The home originally had only one wing, so it looked lopsided,” the company’s principal Charles “Chuck” Hilton explained. He and his team added a matching wing to balance and complete the architectural composition and also replaced some of the weaker exterior elements such as the front portico and cupola. “When you pulled up to the front, we wanted you to think that it was always there.” The home, a 1942 Georgian revival home, was largely untouched during most of its history. The architects were faced with the challenge of modernizing the home, while being respectful and preserving some of the historical aspects. For example, Hilton and team blurred the lines between old and new

by hiding the home’s technology. Though the home is now filled with many modern amenities, in order to retain the house’s traditional character, the team camouflaged televisions, heating and air conditioning grills in the interior trim and millwork throughout the house. The team, which works on a fair amount of American Georgians, has done business with this particular client for over 18 years. “Our client, who is welltraveled and very handson, brought a lot of ideas to the table,” Hilton shared. His team worked with the client, an avid gardener, every step of the way. The added wing includes a sunroom that was inspired by the client’s desire to feel like he was outside in his beloved garden year round. Together, they came up with the idea of constructing a trellised sunroom with French doors that lead out into his well-manicured grounds. In three phases, Hilton said he and his team of architects delivered an

ransforming this coastal home in Rowayton, CT involved dealing with a few non-conformites up front. The home, initially riddled with zoning deficiencies and other code violations, left the architects at Alisberg Parker scratching their heads. “There were prior renovations that left us asking how the previous owner was able to get away with it,” said architect and partner Ed Parker. The team of experts worked together to sketch out a resolution that would bring the uniquelyshaped home up to code. Built in the 1950s, and first renovated in the 1990’s, the waterfront residence received what Parker called the “Triple Play”. He and his firm handled all three aspects of the project -- the architecture, interior design and construction. “We opened up the house to the outside so that the homeowners could see the water from the house,” Parker explained. They, along with their clients, created a design concept that gave the home more of a beach feel. Parker commended the couple, who took the firm’s advice, trusted their judgement and counted on them every step of the way. “They were involved when they needed to be, and not involved when they did not need to be,” he said. The completed project wrapped up in perfect timing for the young family, who experienced their own transformation during the process. The couple, who had two children at the start of the renovation, welcomed a third child by the project’s completion.

he team at Michael Smith Architects took pride in their ability to remodel this Darien, Connecticut mid-century colonial into a home that was more modern. In conjunction with their client, specifically the lady of the house, they successfully changed the original style of the home, which firm president Michael Smith described as “blah” at first sight. “We wanted to keep it as a colonial, but make it some-

thing different,” he added. Together, they strove to update it in terms of modern conveniences and materials. With the exception of a minor expansion in the rear of the house, they successfully reach their goals while working with the colonial’s existing footprint. Smith credits the client, who was very involved and had a clear idea of what she wanted, for helping execute the project. She sketched designs and selected items such

as light fixtures and exterior materials. “We were on the same page the entire time, which made it flow more easily.” Through lengthy brainstorm sessions, they identified design aspects that were the most important. Smith says that the kitchen, located in the center of the house, was most important to the client. So, the team created an intimate sitting area immediately off of the kitchen. Smith is most proud of the finished look of the exterior. “Bringing the look up-to-date and getting rid of that tired mid-century colonial feel was the most important design aspect to me.” 26

eorge Dumitru’s emphasis on precision and attention to detail make him a highly sought-after architect. While redesigning this Scarsdale, NY residence, he relied on those two principles in every step of the process. Through time, the 1960s contemporary Tudor retained its original look, while the rest of the neighborhood homes were remodeled and upgraded. “We had to make the house fit into the neighborhood, while addressing the clients’ lifestyles and necessities,” Dumitru explained. “When you drive through the neighborhood, the house has to look like it fits in.” His firm, Studio Dumitru Architecture was careful to avoid idiosyncrasies or an obvious “mix matched” exterior. Within the walls of the redressed home, they worked with the property’s residents to transform the dated interior into a state-of-the-art, energy compliant/efficient center. His team developed an open floor plan, which gave the inside a light and airy feel. Dumitru described the clients as an excited, open-minded family of five. “They were on board from day one and gave us a lot of freedom

in terms of design,” he said. Their solid partnership even made the obstacles of the project less challenging, according to the veteran architect. “The house had a lot of nonconformities, including some site restriction. Although they aren’t magicians, Radoslav Opacic Architects had to work a few tricks to complete their renovation of this Sleepy Hollow, NY home. The clients, a couple with ties to the fashion industry, were looking to completely transform their standard colonial-style house. Included with the planned overhaul was a new home office space, an expanded master bedroom and a garage-which was missing from the original layout. “We used the original foundation along with a few key structured walls, “said architect Janet Roseff. “But this

project required us to create a whole new space to meet their lifestyle.” “For a something like this, we maintain communication with the client from the planning stages to occupancy. The idea is to hone in on the client’s needs, even if they can’t always verbalize it.” Adding to challenges of construction was the reluctance of the neighborhood association to approve the plans. The organization had expressed concern regarding how the new house would blend in with their conventional setting. In order to win over the association, Janet’s team took

their final design cues from the historic neighborhood. Stucco was used based on precedence from some of the other homes. The attic was utilized for the large home office. And they worked closely with the group to ensure that the new landscape would not infringe on that of the neighbors. Both the association and clients were thrilled with the results, an updated space that provided the best of contemporary conveniences paired with traditional building materials. “We take pride in our ability to exceed our client’s expectations,” continued Roseff. “A lot of times clients feel like they need something but they aren’t sure of all of the possibilities. hen designing a new sun room at this Greenwich, CT home, AP Savino turned to architect Peter Hart to help create an energy-efficient space that would work with three tween kids. The clients were questioned by Hart to determine their immediate and future use of the space. Peter also questioned them about their hectic lifestyle. The final plans utilized both the analysis of their needs with the overall makeup of the other area homes. “Our renovations are always inspired by the existing structure and neighborhood context” Hart explained. “We seek to blend the new with the old, adding details if possible to help unify the new composition.” Indeed creating continuity throughout the home proved to be the biggest challenge. Because of the age of the building’s structure, the team had to work to combine the vastly different style elements. Because many of the original materials were not created with sustainably in mind, Sound Solar Systems also had to modernize whenever possible to reduce overall energy waste. The clients were pleased with both the completed addition and the overall savings created from the solar panels. or the architects at Pagliaro Bartels Sajda, inspiration for renovations are often drawn from the ever-changing patterns found in nature. “Good architecture isn’t always about getting as much house on a project as possible. It’s about the manipulation of the building’s envelope so that its living spaces become one with the landscape, “said architect Christopher Pagliaro. “Views are never singular. They are experienced from different angles, often through multiple spaces. They want to change as the sun moves, whether the seas are calm, the skies are blue or in a violent storm. It is nature provides the gift. And it’s our job to marry our dwellings to what is offered,” he added. A key component of their renovation planning is the client interview. More than just a series of questions regarding the clients’ planned use of the space, it is an exhaustive process designed to truly understand every aspect of the customer’s lives. Just how in depth are the questions? They cover everything from sleeping habits to extended friend and family. And while this part of the planning may seem a bit tedious-Pagliaro Bartels Sajda see it as a necessary evil. “I tell each client that the more challenging they are, the better the project. The questions are endless but the answers become the checklist that the design must respond to. And that response to the client often enlightening.” For the featured renovations, one common challenge faced by the team for was understanding the parameters of the original space. Because the work was not entirely new construction, the team sought to

maintain continuity among the new and old designs. “Whereas new construction is clean because every element is in your control, renovation can often be challenging,” Chris explained. “The key is getting to know what you are inheriting. On some of the really old structures we sometimes found unexpected treasures and incorporated them into the final design.” Because they are full-service firm, Pagliaro Bartels Sajda handled almost all aspects of renovations for the featured homes. The team not only include the planners, but also interior designers, landscape architects and an audio-visual expert. “The idea is that it is a performing art: you cannot ask us to write the script yet not participate in the casting, set production and performance, “concluded Pagliaro. “ Since we wrote the script, it’s always good to have the common good in mind. he formal style of this Darien, CT family room did not fit the casual tastes of its residents, so they enlisted the help of Lynne Scalo Interiors to recreate the space. Scalo said she was excited to work with the family, which included growing teens and a few pets. She and the client were on the same page at every point of the project. “My clients are always involved with the interior design of their home. They communicate what they would like to achieve and then we make it happen.” Inspired to create a concept that matched the family’s informal style, Scalo said she aimed to introduce a bit more glamor, without being pretentious. “They entertain quite a bit, so they wanted this to be a space where everyone could come, gather and feel comfortable and sophisticated,” she said. Because of the high useage of the space and the amount of traffic expected to flow throughout, she selected decor items that were very durable. “I had to make sure that I used the right kinds of materials; ones that would allow the room to be ‘lived in’,” she said. With the overall goal of giving the room an understated, yet elegant and modern feel, Scalo worked around a concept she described as “classic modern”. hen the owner of this Manalapan, FL residence approached Greenwich CT-based Linda Ruderman Interiors about creating an functional office space for his home, the firm principal and her seasoned team designed the perfect plan to meet his various needs. Included in the plan was a layout that offered the comforts and amenities that would be suitable for regularly hosting business guests. They decided that would include amenities like a coffee bar, private bathroom and kitchen. In order to achieve his desired result, Ruderman said her team recommended separating the space from the rest of the house. The homeowner, who knew exactly how he wanted the finished product to look, agreed and gave the interior designers full control after the total design concept was approved. The designers then set forth with executing the full concept. “His preference was that this space be a departure of the moorish architecture and interior design of the rest of the estate,” Ruderman said. She and her team were inspired by the client’s use of the most up-to-date technology available, along with his personal contemporary art collection. “The overriding theme is the mirrored lacquer walls, a silver cloud travertine floor, the anigre walls, and the glass work with accents of nickel,” Ruderman explained, “which formed to create this modern space that showcases all the special artwork.” East Coast Home + Design

Throughout the process, Ruderman’s team only challenge was to create a working desk that would also be aesthetically pleasing to the room at all times. Ruderman resolved the challenge with ease by creating a custom desk with motorized lifts for the monitors to rise up when needed. With assistance from multiple artisans in order to create the final result, the firm seamlessly fulfilled every single aspect of the satisfied client’s vision from over 1,300 miles away. ill Kalman, owner of this Wesport, CT residence, described the home remodel as “a long time coming.” As the owner of Bella Interiors, Kalman served as both designer and client simultaneously during her home transformation. After living in the house for a dozen years, the Kalman household felt the need to make some drastic changes to their 56 year old home. Jill set her eyes on the living room, in particular. “I wanted my family of four to be able to watch tv, lay down to take a nap, as well as have additional seating when we have a lot of people over,” she explained. She used color to create a balance between her goal of achieving an airy, yet inviting feel to the room. Using shades of grey consistently throughout, Kalman incorporated the shade into multiple elements. A broad sweep across the space reveals beachy grey ac54

cents, grey walls, grey custom stained floors and a grey sectional. The sectional sofa, which tied in the overall room theme of comfort and entertainment, was Kalman’s main focus. “For the sectional, I wanted a soft fabric, so I custom designed it for comfort,” she said. Kalman’s team at Bella Interiors also removed the home’s existing sliding glass doors, an element that she described as, “old and common during the ‘50s and ‘60s”. In turn, French doors were installed. She did, however, keep the home’s original large windows in order to maintain the room’s natural lighting. She described the end results of the living room as a transitional, modern style. As both designer and client, Kalman was enthused to share that she was pleased with the final look. cross between a modern farmhouse and a Belgian estate-that was the inspiration behind this home design, according to Kerri Rosenthal and Denise Davies of D2 Interieurs. Influenced by fresh, timeless and modern interiors, the firm stepped up to create a functional concept. “The homeowners are a young, growing family with two babies under two,” Davies explained. “Every element has a purpose and works for their busy, young family.” Because her team had worked with them in multiple phases, Davies said the clients had enormous trust in them and gave them free reign.

That included resolving any challenges, like the home’s multiple 9ft round stone turrets that D2 Interieurs had to incorporate into the design. They decided to make them a functional part of the house. A TV hangs securely from the turret in the master bedroom on the outside, and on the inside they designed a master shower and tub that fits seamlessly into the confined space. The design team, who handled every facet of the project, used simple elements with an organic feel throughout the 20 year old home. In the kitchen, iconic piece give a nod to mid-century modernism. When asked what design facet was most important, Davies replied,

“We always adapt to our clients design facet and give them a home that does not scream ‘a designer was here’. This allows us to create different design plans for all of our clients. arrying the traditional and contemporary elements was both interesting and challenging for the Clean Design firm as they created a bathroom concept for this decade-old home. Founder and principal designer Claire Paquin explained that along the way, she helped her Scarsdale, NY clients to push the limits of their comfort zones in order to achieve a more streamlined and cohesive design. “I always involve my clients substantially in the design,” Paquin said. “After all, it’s their house and I want it to suit their needs and aesthetic.”

“Originally, the bathroom was dated and lacked character. The ceiling height was not being taken advantage of--everything was too low,” she added. The client, who had more traditional tastes, worked with Clean Design to modernize the bathroom while still maintaining a very transitional feel. Paquin and team worked hard to integrate the existing architectural details into the new design. For example, she said they carried the detail on the eyebrow window into the design of the arched doors on the custom built-ins. Certain elements, like the asymmetrical, egg-shaped tub, when paired with the more traditional Samuel Heath plumbing fittings, helped to bring the room up-to-date. They added a large pendant lantern and elongated the vanity mirrors to give the illusion of more height over the vanity. The Clean Design team raised the heights of a lot of elements in the room, including the shower enclosure and the custom built-in. “We came up with the idea of the marble mosaic ‘rug’ in the center of the room--once that idea had been formulated, everything flowed from there.” The mosaic design continued into the shower, helping to unify what is a very large room. The team put the large room to great use, as the client was also interested in maximizing storage without sacrificing style. ‘We were able to design a beautiful piece with a good amount of closed storage on the bottom, while maintaining a visually airy piece on top with clear glass doors.” Paquin said. “We commissioned a master potter to create custom ceramics for inside the glass shelves. When asked what was the greatest challenge with completing this project, she exclaimed, “the tub!” 62
Initially set down on it’s own wiring, the tub was not working very well with the design plans. It took a lot of effort, patience, and ingenuity to resolve the issue. Paquin and her team ended up having to open up the dining room ceiling below to lift the tub off the wire and re-wire it so that it would function. hen the customers wanted a unique bar in order to entertain guests, they reached out to the team at LaBella Spaidal in order to bring flavor to the final project. “Our client’s expectations and preferences were the driving force behind our design, said Dina Spaidal. “In this case, the clients were a young couple with no children who was looking for a space that not only they will enjoy but also their friends” Labella went with a retro-vibe by adding antiqued mirror doors to better reflect the living room’s neutral palate as well as the wooded area outside. The space also got new life courtesy of an updated wine bar that was painted electric blue. The clients definitely loved the changes. However, there was one detail that stood out among the rest-the blue faux “glamour-croc” upholstery that covered the interior. “We were very lucky with this project as there were no challenges in completing it,” Dina continued. “We handled all aspects of the project except the painting of the wine rack, which our client wanted to do herself. “W
hen the call came in last summer from the homeowner of a Larchmont kitchen renovation, I immediately knew this was going to be a special project,”, recalls Sarah Robertson, owner and lead designer of Studio Dearborn in Mamaroneck. The homeowner is part of the core group of founders for the shelter website Houzz.com. “She is smart and super knowledgeable about the home improvement business, but this was their first renovation!” Robertson explains. With the arrival of their 3rd child, the homeowners had maxed out of their existing home. They had just purchased and would be closing within weeks on a beautiful colonial that needed everything. Right away, Robertson began the process of getting to know the homeowners, their lifestyle and their young family’s needs. “With 3 children under the age of 5, their priorities were the durability of the kitchen and the practicality of the layout,” Robertson says. Keeping the existing kitchen was not even a consideration. With dated cabinetry and no access to a casual living area, they decided to gut and add on a substantial addition which included a new master suite above the great room. “We started building ideabooks on Houzz immediately,” Robertson says, “and I gave them every back issue of East Coast Home & Design to tear into. It just took a few hours to get a good handle on their style and priorities.” Although the initial layout called for a different kitchen orientation, Robertson eventually prevailed in convincing the homeowners to redesign the layout with a larger island and both rangetop and ovens on the same wall. “I really like to locate the refrigerator near the main dining area if possible,” Robertson explains, “to minimize steps back and forth while serving meals to the kids.” This placement also keeps

refrigerator “foot traffic” out of the main cooking area. An undercounter refrigerator drawer unit was placed in the island for fruits and vegetables. “The homeowners eat a lot of salads, so we created an efficient station on the island where refrigeration, cutting boards, knives, and compost storage would all be within a step of the main prep area,” Robertson says. “We used a unique waste station made by Hailo, which holds two full sized waste cans, compost, and even has room for trash bags. It uses every inch of space!” Honed jet mist counters were chosen for their durability and classic looks. “We had long discussions on topics such as the durability of counter materials, the kitchen sink options, the various brands of appliances, how much refrigeration a family needs... this will be a hard working kitchen where performance matters. Not surprisingly, every decision was well researched.” The island, although replete with custom storage, also has room for the entire family of five to sit at the counter for a casual meal. “By

wrapping the seating around the end of the island, I could give them a more useful work surface at the island end nearest the refrigerator. With 3 kids underfoot, I figured every saved step was important!� The final product is a kitchen which is light, airy and open, but with plenty of storage for a busy family. It will serve as the hub of this busy home for many years to come. s the children of the house grow up, every family faces the need for more space at one time or another. Front Row Kitchens designer Matthew Giardina drafted a design that fulfilled those exact needs fo this Stanford, CT residence. “They needed more room”, he said of the middle-aged couple, with children in their 20s. The kitchen, a driving force behind the redesign, received two additions: the family room and the dining room. The rooms were originally three distinct spaces. He and his team worked with the family to open up the house, which centered around the high-traffic kitchen. The clients relied on the designers’ years of expertise to address the obstacle of the kitchen’s narrowness. “In order to put an island in, we had to reduce the depth of the cabinets along the dining room wall and relocate appliances such as the refrigerator,” Giardina said. “Another aspect of that room impacting the kitchen was that we included a double wide entry from the dining room into the kitchen.” As a result, the doorway was expanded to 48 inches. Along the other side, a wall was taken down between the kitchen and the family room, making both appear larger and more connected. Barn board was removed from a different wall in the family room, which gave the space a lighter feel. By the project’s completion, the Front Row Kitchens team felt that they had created the perfect flow and design for the brick Georgian colonial home, built in the 1980s. A
lthough some designers may find it difficult to be creative with the utility space of the laundry room, Dawn Gepfert of Dawn P. Gepfert Designs jumped at the opportunity to include it with the Fairfield, Connecticut home’s ongoing renovations. “The kitchen, bathroom and utility rooms are the hub of any home“, Dawn said. “And especially with this space-as everyone enters the home through the side door. Therefore, I wanted to create a room that was warm and inviting for all who passed through there.” What was once a single crowded space became three separate areaseach with a set function. The entry way was redesigned as a mudroom, complete with heated floors, a comfortable bench as well as hooks for coats and scarves. To the right Before of the entryway was a full closet in which to hide muddy galoshes and

snow boots. And as for the laundry room? Dawn added a dryer (the original had only a washer) along with a window to invite in natural light. The result is an area that anyone would be proud to fold clothes in. The use of natural light would become a major component in the redesign of the kitchen and dining area. Because of the fact that the home was built in the 40’s, Dawn wanted to open the area and add modern influences while still maintaining the classic lines of the period. In the dining room, Dawn kept the beautiful high ceilings that was synonymous with the era while strategically adding windows to welcome in the sun. The windows also gave a perfect view to the rosebush and vegetable garden that the team planted outside. Seating was also adding to the kitchen, along with modern cook-

ing surfaces ranges. To create a more open area, she removed many of the overhead cabinets and replaced them with a central island with expanded drawers for better storage. The final product is a space ideal for any growing family that loves to entertain while cooking. For Dawn the biggest challenge was to create a sense of continuity through the 6,200 square foot home while keeping the spirit of the 1940’s architecture intact. “It definitely takes careful thought and consideration to design a space without simply tearing it all down and rebuilding. We wanted to honor the incredible design of the original architect while marrying the two eras to create a unique place to meet both the needs of the client and maintain sustainability.” KITCHEN DESIGN Dawn P. estled in the village of Katonah, New York, an active family of four admire their new home additions constructed by local landscape specialist Kevin Ambrosio. Ambrosio, a landscape architect, with nearly a quarter of a century of expertise, transformed what he called the property’s “nonusable space” into a retreat that made the residents feel as if they were a million miles away. Working in two phases, under different deadlines, he and his team of skilled craftsmen at Ambrosio Landscape Solutions successfully delivered three different projects. “For the family, who had no outdoor entertainment before, we first installed an outdoor grilling area and outdoor fire pits. It gave the family immediate access to entertainment,” he said.

Two years later, he and his crew were called upon once again to erect a pool house, activity court for tennis and basketball and landscape the fielded area near the property’s pond. The clients, whose hobbies include lap swimming, sports and gardening, were excited when their outdoors area had been transformed in six months. From October to April, Ambrosio Landscape Solutions incorporated vegetable gardens, designed walkways through the use of trees and created vanishing edges on the upper pool patio, which offers a seamless view onto the pond. “This design revolved around the vistas of the pool, the pond and their relationship to the existing house,” Ambrosio said. “The clients wanted the architectural style of the pool home to reflect the main house.”

n two years, Ridegfield, CT resident and head of the Lion’s Paw and Company Anna Nowak transformed her backyard into an oasis that includes a tri-level deck, pool and secret garden. Visitors agree, however, that the single most stunning feature of the Nowak property is the grand view. “The view from the area…it’s just breathtaking,” said Nowak, whose property has the highest viewpoint in the area. “During the Forth of July holiday, we are able to view the fireworks all the way in the neighboring town of New Canaan,” she exclaimed. The top-level of the deck overlooks the entire backyard and into the distant terrain. Adding to the sound of the natural outdoors, the constant flow of the waterfall provides a soothing tone. Crystal-clear water gushes downward into the kidney-shaped pool. “We were able to do the waterfall off of the natural ledge, which allowed us to create the beautiful flow into the pool,” Nowak said. She revealed that the idea for the curvaceous stone pool came into fruition while having a backyard barbecue with the project engineers, which included pool expert Joseph Murphy. He played a key role in the success of the backyard transformation. “We’d sketch design ideas, pass it across the table, then Joseph would sketch ideas and pass them back.”

Murphy displayed professionalism and quality at its finest, according to Nowak. Through their casual exchange of designs, the teams crafted a tranquil, yet entertaining retreat for the entire household and their frequent guests. She said that the people who visit feel at peace with the beauty of the rear space. After an especially hectic day, Nowak is often lured into the area she describes as a “secret garden” by the enchanting sight of overgrown wild roses, peonies and even foxes and bald eagles. The most cherished possession, however, is neither the blanket of bougainvillea plants nor the gentle wildlife that often roam the grounds. hen Hoffman Landscapes, Inc. perused the lot of a Westport residence, they realized they had quite a challenge on their hands. The house was tucked into one corner of a generous lot, creating limited space for a backyard of any kind. The client’s directive: create a space large enough for dining and entertaining with an outdoor kitchen. In addition, these busy homeowners were looking for a place to relax away from peering neighbors. The space needed to include a safe play area for the children that is deer and tick proof. Hoffman Landscapes’ Brian Cossari, landscape architect on the project, felt they could utilize the long, narrow space against the back of the house. This area was accessible to the home’s kitchen and family room. Cossari worked closely with the town’s P&Z board to satisfy regulations regarding relocation of the septic system in order to get maximum footage for the new patio. Cossari created lots of visual interest in the compact space using a series of levels, starting with a lovely seating area on a raised patio. A wrought iron fence known as a “lean rail” brings an open and spacious feel to the room, where one can overlook the gardens and keep an eye on the children below.

Stepping stones placed between moss phlox and rug juniper ground covers meander through the garden path, bringing you up the sloping hill to the top level of the outdoor kitchen. The bluestone pavement, fieldstone walls and stainless steel appliances create a comfortable destination. The gently curved, low stone wall offers ample seating for guests and entertaining. A dining area surrounded by woodland, shade-loving plantings in varying hues of green and many different textures surround the patio, including hostas, astilbe, stonecrop sedum, coreopsis and Hakonakloa grass. No need for a wooden privacy fence here, as a natural fence fit in perfectly behind the new stone wall. Evergreens such as Norway and Serbian spruce, Japanese white pine and Hinoki cypress offer the added bonus of camouflaging the deer fencing in winter months. For color specimen Japanese maple trees as well as flowering and Kousa dogwoods, weeping cherry and crabapples were planted. A multitude of shrubs bring a plethora of color throughout the seasons as well. The plantings are stunning at nighttime. A comprehensive lighting plan was developed to increase functionality. Now the entertainment doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. The result: a very cozy and private space that offers unique visual interest for both family and guests at any hour of the day or night. beloved tree served as the catalyst for the renovation of this client’s Wilton, CT home. The family, with two teenage children at home and one in college, wanted to create an addition that allowed them to accommodate their active lifestyle. Once the team at Artemis Landscape Architects saw the majestic maple in the yard, they knew that it had to be the centerpiece of the final work. But before they was able to design a place that met the customer’s requests-they first had to check the tree’s well-being. “Our ultimate goal was to honor the tree that has become such an important part of their lives,” said Tara Vincenta, the project’s lead architect. “But we had to ensure that it would be safe. So we actually brought in an arborist to inspect the roots as well as analyze its overall health.” Once she was given the go ahead, she set to work on creating a three level outdoor space that was big enough entertain the family’s large circle of friends. The upper level was created for outdoor dining, with steps down to a large entertainment space perfect for a spontaneous musical jam session. The lowest level had a fire pit along with outside furniture. As the project took shape, the clients were so

Before pleased with the results that an enclosed porch was added. This allowed the clients the flexibility to enjoy their completed space all-year round. For Tara, the ultimate satisfaction is how she was able to create a memorable place that was both functional as well as ecofriendly. And it appears that she achieved that goal. “The client recently vacationed on Martha’s Vineyard, only to realize that they felt that their new addition was much better than where they stayed.
