Vanishing TV Mirrors and Invisible Stereo Speakers Story by Lollie Mathews

The Vanishing TV Mirror is something that bridges the gap between technology and decor. Who would have ever imagined one could be looking at their bathroom mirror and suddenly decide to change it into a TV? These vanishing TV Mirrors provide better than accurate picture quality and 100% mirror reflection. When turned on, the TV delivers as crisp and clear a picture as you’d get with an un-obstructed view. When the TV is turned off, the display completely disappears. The creators at Seura brought it to life and now Westfair TV of Fair18

field can bring into your home. The client doesn’t need to compromise their décor, as they can work with Westfair TV to select mirror shapes and sizes, bevel options, locations, and more than 100 custom frames. This certainly is an unexplored territory as no one has ever designed such a brilliant clever product for the bathroom. Every product is engineered and hand-crafted in Séura’s facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It brings technology to a new level all while maintaining a sense of

impeccable style that Westfair’s clients are happy to have in their homes. Invisible Speakers for the kitchen is another important design element when one wants a seamless look. It is something Westfair TV specializes in and seems to be hearing more and more clients moving towards. Gone are the days when speakers would be in plain view and cause an eye sore. Now they can be hidden and virtually gone from the naked eye. Once the room has been finished, the music will appear to come out of nowhere. The speakers themselves can be installed virtually anywhere behind sheetrock in the kitchen and function as any normal speakers would. They are designed in such a way that they can deliver hires, crystal clear sound while being invisible once they are properly installed. Let Your Pantry Take You from Chaos to Cooking! Story by Anne DiFrancesco and Lori Roffwarg

W

ay back when, if you had a walk-in pantry, it may also have housed the refrigerator or the sink, as kitchens were not the size they are in today’s world. Or, maybe you had a small butler’s pantry where there was just enough room for your most special china and serving pieces. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and pantries have come into their own. No longer plagued with an identity problem, they play a significant role in our lives today. Pantries are one of the most requested features in American homes today, despite larger kitchen sizes. There is a charm and nostalgia to the pantry, as well as a practical, utilitarian purpose. Walk-ins are outfitted with custom-built cabinetry and all the accessories that make meal prep easy. Although they are likely hidden from view, they work hard behind the scenes to keep the family organized and have items effortlessly accessible. Just because they may be out of sight or mostly used for storage doesn’t mean they shouldn’t reflect your design aesthetic. Furnished with the same door 22

and drawer style cabinets that are in your kitchen, they can act as a “pretty” extension to that room. Where Do I Start? Ask yourself what you want out of your ideal space. What features will improve your kitchen experience and perhaps encourage you to cook more? Take stock of the situation to get it under control. Just like offices with overflowing paperwork, and closets packed with rarely worn clothes, working with a trained designer will ensure optimization of your storage space to its fullest potential. Renovating or adding a pantry can be life changing. “Since the kitchen is the heart and hub of the home, making order out of a characteristically disorderly space gives the cook and other household members a way to keep organized, calm and prepared,” says Karen Bradbury, Design Director of the Norwalk, CT-based Closet & Storage Concepts. “When there is room to see what you have and what you need, it will

Today’s pantry accessories include convenient pull-out shelves, racks and bins for placing cans and other foods within easy reach.

Despite today’s larger kitchen sizes, pantries are one of the most frequently requested features in the home today. They can be designed to provide additional workspace along with storage for small appliances keeping your kitchen countertops clutter-free.

make your shopping chore a lot less painful,” continues Bradbury. A satisfied Scarsdale, NY customer exclaims, “The new design organized my kitchen pantry in such a way that it gives me easy access to everything. It keeps my kitchen neat, and brings food preparation to a whole new level.” Choose from a Wide Array of Options and Accessories Just like the kitchen, pantries too have great accessories that keep items handy and give them a place of their own, even when buying in bulk quantities. • Materials and finishes are available in many colors, styles and textures to fit any décor or create a whole new look. • Pull-out shelves and racks enable cans in the back to be seen and readily reached. • Pull-out bins and woven baskets for apples, or potatoes, onions 24

and other root vegetables are a wonderful option, so you know at a glance what you have on-hand. The Perfect Blend of Design and Craftsmanship Today’s custom cabinetry construction offers maximum storage capacity and will fit even the tightest space, making every square inch available to use to its highest and best potential. Countertops provide additional workspace along with storage, keeping your kitchen countertops free of the dreaded small appliance menagerie that happens with today’s countless, yet convenient tools-of-the-trade. Shallow shelving highlights ingredients and places them within a hand’s reach. A full view of all your spices and ingredients will not only cook up your imagination but satisfy cravings for new recipes as well. It can inspire you to prepare different and tastier dishes, making you feel like a rock star in your own kitchen! You may not aspire to

become a famous chef, but who doesn’t want some accolades from the family now and then? The pantry can also be designed to accommodate the wine fridge, along with extra wine racks and glasses, keeping your wine selections close at hand. You can carve out room for a computer/desk space to keep kitchen clutter at bay. This will keep the mountains of paperwork that accumulate on a daily basis under control, out of sight, yet easily found. A Pantry’s Stock and Trade According to The Food Network, “Basic Pantry 101” states that “while a good shopping list is the key to a quick and painless trip to the supermarket, a well-stocked pantry is the best way to ensure that you’ll have most of what you need to cook once you get home.” At their site, you can find helpful information on Oils, Vinegars & Condiments, Seasonings, Canned Goods & Bottled Items, Grains & Legumes, Baking Products, Refrigerator Basics and Storage Produce. Having these staples on hand will enable you to create many delicious meals. Also, the Pantry Essentials Checklist “is like money in the bank”. With basic supplies on hand, you’ll be equally prepared to put together a family-friendly meal or a last-minute dinner for friends. Foodies favorite, the Bon Appétit website, offers a host of pantry essentials organized by cuisine and taste. Gain inspiration from pantry items the top chefs keep on hand from staples for healthier eating to the middle eastern pantry to a list of 16 desserts you can make right now from what’s in your pantry. DIY in Less Time = Independence for Every Family Member An organized pantry will aid in reducing stress around meal planning, cooking and clean up. You want to store it, retrieve it and use it as easily as possible for all family members, whether they want a snack, a school lunch, to prepare just one meal or a week’s worth of meals. Moms will not have to be asked where every single item is when everything is in plain sight, or drawers are labeled with what’s inside, nurturing independence among members of the household. This will foster harmony and bring time savings to your life. Would you like to get more function out of the space to help organize your family? Try adding an “activity center” with a chore chart, and a bulletin board to tack on invitations to the myriad of activities. Hang a calendar large enough to write each child’s after-school happenings and appointments, so the tutus go to the dance class and the cleats show up on the soccer field! Pantries can help you live a more stress-free life in your home, and when you are calm and organized, your household will be soothed as well. That’s a recipe you will be happy to mix up from your pantry. lthough an architect by trade, Anthony Minichetti lives for the opportunities to bring his unique approach to interior design to a project. “I truly believe that every surface can serve as a canvas,” explained Anthony. “If I can have control over construction, I usually like to have both the exterior and interior aesthetics complement one another. So I truly welcome the challenge to create something special for my clients.” Such an opportunity came when he was approached by a family of four looking to renovate a 6,000 square foot Mediterranean-style home in Wellington, Florida. The clients, who had worked with him previous on other properties in Long Island, were looking to use this residence as a second home during the winter months. “Because the client’s 13-year old daughter had developed a serious interest in equestrian show jumping, they owned show horses that they travelled back and forth with depending on the season.” said Minichetti. “Since this was the case, they decided to look for something not as formal as their other residences, just comfortable enough during these visits.” Let There Be Light Working closely with his Project Manager, Catherine Cameron, Anthony completely gutted the original house to allow it to better reflect the vibrant young family living there. Among the many changes were the removal of a formal dining room and the installation of a “mancave” type area.

Adding more light was also a main priority as they removed many of the dark cabinets and replaced them with more white and beige furnishings. Anthony also added celestial LED fixtures throughout the home. Designed by Dutch mathematics professor Raimond Puts, the orbs provided the home with an ethereal-like illumination that was both exciting and sophisticated. “We wanted the lighting to also double up as sculptural elements to fill up the large cavities of space throughout the home after all of the renovations. “ Anthony said. “I’ve actually wanted to use these fixtures for years. I placed them in the living room and in the stairwell. I love that they almost move with you. “ Taking Creative Licenses When it was time to decorate the interior, the customers gave him free reign. “The clients actually had very few requirements. They knew they wanted a lot of color. They wanted it to be youthful and playful, not at all serious like their other residences. Beyond that, they were really open to other suggestions. I think this is because we trusted each other from the other projects we’ve collaborated on in the past. They were open to taking chances.” Wanting to avoid the obvious horse-related theme, Anthony drew his inspirations from the family’s extensive art collection. Because the selection was quite eclectic, the team was looking for a way to tie the many images together. The solution? The repeated use of muted shades to serve as a backEast Coast Home + Design

drop for the various works. “It was definitely risky. We kept most of the ceiling and floor colors quiet. All of the wall to wall carpeting were neutral tones. The core of the house itself was mostly white, including the majority of the walls and many of the furnishings. Doing so allowed us to be a bit more vibrant with our color choices, which, was largely dictated by the art in each room.” This design narrative is best illustrated within the bedrooms-where each space takes on a central color based on the artwork within. In the son’s room, a framed “Orange Crush” bottle cap picture becomes a juicy centerpiece amongst vibrantly embroidered wallpaper and a comfy tangerine chaise. While in the guest room, a print of Warhol’s Flowers offered jeweled emerald tones that are reflected in the patterned table lamps. Another Warhol print found its way to the daughter’s room, where the colored flowers blend effortlessly with the lavender walls. In fact, the color proved so popular with the family that they decided to extend it into the master bedroom. Fun in the Sun Throughout this home, Anthony was careful to include elements that invoked the beauty that existed as part of the landscape just steps away. In the living room, Anthony used two Warhol paintings (Sunrise and Sunset) to create a sense of spending the day at the beach. To better establish the effect, he paired the sandcolored carpeting with the light blue couches. Anthony’s team continued the water imagery in the stairwell. To do so, he painted the wall by the stairwell blue and added brass “divers” to simulate a sensation of diving into a pool. As for the kitchen, Minichetti’s team intentionally used color to create a casual environment for the family to gather in lieu of a more formal dining space. Left: The husband’s office space makes use of neutral tones to make the colors of the oil painting come alive. Top: A print of an Orange Crush bottle cap and tangerine chair creates a welcoming space for the son’s bedroom. Center: A custom purple pillow made from an Hermes scarf adds the perfect complements to the lavender walls of the daughter’s room. The designer commissioned a special neon horseshoe fixture from artist Steve Moser to wish the aspiring equestrian luck in her competitions. 1/16/15 5:46 PM

“The kitchen area is that sort of sea-shell salmon color that has ties back to Florida. We felt that it would provide a great contrast to the rest of the colors used throughout the home. In addition, it’s great for a dining area because it’s been known to stimulate the appetite and digestion.” “We also had fun with the Taj Mahal photograph. We intentionally used it for the sense of depth and added perspective,” Anthony recalled. The color extended itself into the family room, where large custom-built sliding pocket doors allows the family to savor the exquisite views of the golf course. Adding a Bit of Luck The team was careful to avoid the equestrianrelated designs throughout the home. However, there were two key items that they added in honor of the daughter’s passion. One such gift was the custom pillow on the daughter’s bed custom made from an Hermes scarf that the mother gifted to the daughter for use in her competitions. “We knew that she wasn’t using it due to the Florida heat. So we wanted to give her a chance to enjoy it every night.” The other present were two unique neon fixtures that adorned the walls of her bedroom. Anthony drew a picture of a lucky horseshoe, then worked with neon artist, Steve Moser, to give it illumination. The process was then recreated for a “peace and happiness” sign. “It’s intended to be a lucky horseshoe so that she will win all of the top ribbons in her competitions, “ Minichetti recalled with a laugh. “And we added the script because wanted to make sure that this was a space filled with joy and laughter for as long as they lived there.” Resources: Architect & Interior Designer AMA LLC Anthony Minichetti One West Elm Street Greenwich, CT 06830 203.992.1922 AMArchitectLLC.com Contractor JWM Builders Inc. T

he team at Linda Ruderman Interiors were looking for an opportunity to become part of the growing residential boom along the New Jersey’s Gold Coast. So naturally they were thrilled to be approached by Lennar Urban to design one of their model condo residences overlooking the Hudson River. The developer, which had recently completed work on the upscale Avenue Collection waterfront properties, was looking to unveil four

40

specially-designed residences intended to illustrate the myriad style opportunities that exist within the luxury condominium’s impressive living spaces. After an exhaustive search, Linda Ruderman Interiors seemed to be a perfect choice to curate one of their designer models. “Lennar Urban contacted us based on our reputation and longevity in the business “said Wendy Klingensmith, Linda Ruderman Interiors’ Senior Interior Designer. “These are beautiful condominiums that would easily provide wonderful backdrops for our interior design.”

Ruderman.indd 40

1/16/15 5:41 PM

As the project was intended to attract a perspective buyer, the developers offered the firm a budget but generally allowed the design to create their own interpretation of the space. “It’s different when you design a space for a prospective buyer as opposed to an actual client,” Klingensmith explained. “Instead of starting with a particular vision of a client, we create a vision of who we think this client will be. What their needs of the space will be. How they will use the different rooms. Something with enough uniqueness to capture someone’s attention but classic enough to appeal to most people. It’s a balance.” Creative Spaces One of the first things that the LRI design team took into account was the overall size of the condo (1668 Sq. Ft). Because they knew that this may be a factor for some buyers, the design firm meticulously constructed one-of-a-kind furnishings that bridge the gap between form and functional storage. Utilization of space could be challenging for a lot of other design firms but it was not for LRI. The scale and layout of the custom furniture pieces in provided the correct traffic flow and additional storage needed to make the compact space work perfectly. The silver stained walnut built into the living room provides both hidden storage and contemporary display areas for accessories and books. The wall mounted custom lacquered cabinet with inset textured panels in the master bedroom offers more storage without taking up floor space and adds visual openness. Even the custom sofa in the study opens up as a sleeper for unexpected guests. The unique pieces allowed for the compact size of the apartment to be one of its most welcomed features. It allows for maximum use of available space for added storage while adding unique surfaces for displaying accessories and personal items.

The dining room’s custom made chairs have been upholstered with Pollack silk fabric. Lush fabrics and elegant furnishings are a central part of the living room’s mystique.

Another of the most incredible features of the condo was the breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Manhattan Influences Another of the most incredible features of the condo was the breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. So the LRI Team decided to use marble, wood and steel to honor the skyscrapers that loomed just across the Hudson. In the kitchen, sleek state-of-the art appliances pair well with the smooth granite countertops and limestone flooring. The marriage of stone and steel also exists on the bathroom, where marble tile blends almost seamlessly with the nickel plumbing fixtures and walnut cabinetry. While within the study, the design team decided to rely more on wood and vintage accents to establish an atmosphere of quiet con-

templation. The neutral tones of the materials also serves to provide the buyer with a vision of how their lifestyle can be reflected in the elite surroundings. To better illustrate this point, the team carefully placed artwork in the home to provide a pop of color while offering a casual cool to the space. Warmth through Texture While the views of the Manhattan skyline are clean lined, spacious architecture provided a perfect backdrop and canvas for the design vision. They also incorporated warmth and texture as well by using

specific wallpapers, fabrics and materials. Nowhere is this strategy move evident than in the living room, where the LRI team brought together several rich textures to immerse buyers in a sense of classic luxury. Gilded cork wallpaper adorn the walls. While flooring made of Brazilian chestnut leads effortlessly to a custom tufted wool carpet. A plush leather headboard welcomes in the potential owner to take solace from the long day within the linen bedding. While in the guest bedroom, plush carpeting and custom linen draperies offers a striking contrast against with the frame of the iron bed. Linda beautifully describes these additions by saying “The softness the additions described above creates a balance between the rigid geometry of glass and steel. Which could easily also be a way to de-

TR BUILDING & REMODELING

TR Building – a “design-build” firm – brought this custom kitchen design to life from initial concept all the way through the construction phase. Fully immersed in the project from start to finish, the team worked tirelessly to ensure the homeowner was happy with the full experience. With complete trust of the homeowner, the TR Building team – led by Judi Stoogenke – was able to create a kitchen oasis that embraces traditional style without neglecting the all-important contemporary touches. With balance, harmony, and keen attention to detail, this uniquely beautiful kitchen truly has it all. The custom glass doors and cabinets set the tone for this tranquil culinary refuge. The curved mullion doors were designed with form and function in mind. Because they were all constructed in the same size, there is a sense of symmetry and consistency throughout the space. The bespoke cabinetry feature a custom interior paint finish and interior LED lighting. There was impeccable attention to detail in every aspect of the installation of these cabinets. In order to highlight the

beauty of the custom backsplash without the clutter of electrical fittings, outlets were installed on the sides of the corner cabinet. The one-of-a-kind cabinetry also feature stunning walnut drawer boxes, which enhance the traditional theme of the design. The kitchen island features 2 ½” Calcutta Marble on top and 1 ¼” Calcutta along the perimeter. The Calcutta is mirrored on the custom drip rail under the farm sink. The island is constructed of rich walnut with stunning details and plenty of seating. It also houses a hidden icemaker, microwave, extra storage, and outlets for added convenience. The designers created balance throughout the kitchen – with features like the stunning arched valance over the window, which houses recessed lighting within the wainscot panels. The arched design is echoed in the custom hood, which showcases a contemporary stainless range featuring custom-made tile work above the range. The backsplash, which was also custom-designed for this project, offers a seamless transition from the window to the ample farm sink.

To enhance the contemporary edge of this kitchen, the designers decided on unique, customized lighting and electrical features. This fully functional family kitchen is equipped with an integrated TV with invisible speakers in the built-in desk. There was careful attention paid to the visibility of switches and outlets. The design team opted for a Lutron lighting control system, which allowed for all of the switches to be installed in the basement so as not to clutter the meticulous design of the kitchen. The lighting system allows the homeowner to have preset options, including “entertaining”, “cooking”, and “away” so the lighting is always just right. From the custom milled shiplap ceiling to the incomparable glass cabinets, this kitchen has it all. With all of the functionality needed and the luxury that makes it stand out from the “average” design, this kitchen is a homeowner’s dream. From the Calcutta marble featured on the kitchen island and around the farm sink, to the luminous glass cabinets created just for this kitchen, the designers have created a balanced and breathtaking space to be enjoyed by culinary experts and families alike. ROSE ADAMS CABINETRY & DESIGN When the design team at Rose Adams Home set out to tackle this unique kitchen design, they knew it would all come down to planning. Without an expansive area to work with, the design had to focus on efficiency and attention to detail. By carefully working with the homeowner on every aspect, the design team was able to create a oneof-a-kind culinary retreat with the form and function the homeowner was after. What was once a conglomeration of many rooms has been transformed into a bright, timeless kitchen and master bath. The design team paid careful attention to details like seating, storage, lighting, and materials in order to make the most of this space. This design focused on reno52

vating the traditional farmhouse without compromising the original beauty of the structure. Antique meets contemporary to create a space that is warm, fun, and cozy. The designers selected classically styled cabinetry to provide the custom storage the homeowner needed without clashing with the timeless integrity of the design. Through constant collaboration with the client, the team at Rose Adams Home identified ways to improve efficiency in the space while offering the accessibility needed for daily living. Even without tons of space, the design team was able to provide ample storage, shelving, and other conveniences for the homeowner. Bright white cabinets and countertops provide the perfect contrast

to the warm, wood floors. Plenty of natural light from windows and doors provide the perfect accent for preparing culinary masterpieces and hosting family gatherings. The convenient island creates the ideal prep space and houses the farmhouse sink. The designers added seating here to offer an idyllic setting for morning coffee. The end result is a bright, balanced, functional design that gives the client everything they need. From the kitchen island to the custom cabinets, this less than expansive kitchen sprawls with efficiency and modern conveniences. Included in the design of the kitchen was the master bathroom, which is found just off the kitchen. The design for this area evokes a sense of warmth and comfort, while adding conveniences necessary to provide functionality for 2 people. Every detail of the master bath was designed with 2 people in mind – from the his and hers tub to the dual sinks. As bright and airy as the kitchen, the master bath flows easily with the rest of this rambling farmhouse. Through tedious planning and constant collaboration with the client, the Rose Adams Home team designed the perfect kitchen for this antique farmhouse. Without compromising on details or clashing with the integrity of the original antique design of the home, the team provided the homeowners with every modern convenience a kitchen should have. The end result is a bright, airy, cozy kitchen with tons of storage and seating. Whether the kids are home from college for the weekend or the homeowners have the place all to themselves, this kitchen is sure to provide the perfect hub for family activities. When beginning work on a renovation, architects sometimes find that collaborating with clients can be an arduous task. From explaining jargon to reviewing construction specs, it often takes a lot of hard work to create a dialogue that supports the vision of both the customer and the designing firm. However, this was not the case when the team at Carol Kurth Architects was recently approached by a client to update their kitchen. That’s because the client in question was the company’s own bookkeeper, Robin. “It’s actually something that she had considered doing for years,” explained Carol, the firms’ lead architect and interior designer. “So, when she decided to do it, we made sure that she was an essential part of the entire planning process. “ The project involved a complete transformation of several spaces-including the kitchen, mudroom and laundry room. The makeover was set to take place only on the interiors without affecting the exterior design. Therefore, care was taken to not disturb any existing doors or windows. Because Robin was looking to modernize the areas, Carol completely gutted the rooms. The heavy wooden cabinets were replaced with sleek, minimalist shelving provided by Leicht. The country-themed backsplash was changed to a textured glass mosaic one. Even the appliances were updated to a lustrous sterling steel finish. Because the family frequently entertained guests, Kurt’s team also East Coast Home + Design

installed an open cooking island to allow her them freedom to prepare food while facing company. To finish the edgy new look, Kurtz installed pendant lighting and space-age metallic stools. To open the cramped space, Kurt removed several walls to allow for a better flow to the other rooms of the house. In addition, she reorganized the adjacent laundry room to include a dedicated office center. But perhaps the most interesting aspect to the project was to the mudroom. The space was updated to include a “butler’s pantry,” which now contains a wine cooler as well as much needed storage space for outdoor activities. For Robin, the project gave her a chance to be showcase her considerable passion for design. Something, she says, she doesn’t always get a chance to do in her current role with the firm. “I truly love what I do. But I’ve honestly feel that design is in my blood. I’ve always felt that,” Robin said. “It was great to be able to just walk over to Carol whenever I had a question about the contractor and what’s going on with the project. It made the process so easy.” Even more importantly, Robin got the kitchen of her dreams. Something that she had been wanting for quite a while.

LARA MICHELLE BEAUTIFUL INTERIORS

For over 20 years, the design firm of Lara Michelle Beautiful Interiors has gained a reputation on delivering on challenging projects. So the she was recently approached by clients who wanted to complete a renovation with a rather aggressive due date, she didn’t hesitate to take on the work personally. “My firm specializes in large scale residential project design-especially when it involves oversight and management,” firm owner Lara Michelle explained. “We proudly handle all the design work as well as hiring and then managing the contractors on a daily basis. I work very hands on to make sure every detail comes out perfectly.” The clients, a young active couple with both a toddler and dog in tow, were expecting their second child. Their ultimate goal? To have the have the home completed in time to welcome their bundle of joy. “We basically completed a nine month project in about five months,” she said. The couple wanted a modern layout that had subtle influences of nature. Yet, because of the needs of their growing family, special attention had to be given to ensure that the materials used in the newly renovated home could was tough enough to handle spills and finger prints. “Things needed to be durable, kid & pet friendly and slobber proof,” Lara said with a laugh. 60

Kicthen.indd 60

The balance of durability and modern design was most evident in the kitchen. Prior to the renovation he large dine-in area had two large refrigerators, wooden cabinets and a substantial prep island used for food prep. Given the family’s anticipated heavy use of the room, Lara’s immediate challenge was to find a way to keep the changes practical yet stylish. To achieve this goal, the team installed stainless steel appliances that would be easy to clean. The majority of the cabinetry remained as the team elected to refinish them as opposed to replacing them. But the doors of upper cabinet doors were changed to glass to lighten up the space. For the cooking area and dining spaces, Lara updated the island with some dark gray paint and new hardware. The backsplash was changed to white glass subway tiles with a stone mosaic print. Finally, she added a rustic wooden table from One Kings Lane and paired it with white chairs to add contrast to the eating area. With all of the changes, the transformation that caused the most excitement for both the client and designer was that of the floor. “We love the floors!” Lara exclaimed. “I chose a gorgeous silver Travertine placed in a random sized “French” pattern. The stone is very durable and given the variation of dark and light colors it contains,

plus it hides dirt very well!” This attention to form and function continued in the master bathroom. Because the client envisioned a space that was both modern yet casual, Lara completely gutted the space and installed a walk-in shower. She also added porcelain flooring and a glass mosaic tile backsplash that added the right pop of color. The custom made vanity has his and hers sinks as well as wood accents to incorporate the couple’s love of nature. The majority of the home was ready by the family’s move in date-just in time to welcome their new bundle of joy. Interior designer Barbara Feinstein has a knack for creating interesting digs based on her client’s vision. So when she was approached by her long-time clients to turn their bathroom into a haven that doubled as a dressing room, she had a few ideas on how to make the spaces memorable. “They were really looking to create an area that was just for the parents, away from the kids” said Feinstein. “So visually it had to be someplace that felt luxurious.” To accomplish this goal, Barbara’s team found materials that would create the sense of a lush oasis. Thasos marble adorned the walls while the dual sinks of the custom built vanity were created using Emperor Marble and walnut veneers. In the dressing area, she found unique furnishings to give the space a timeless feel. The meticulous attention to detail extended to the flooring, which was created to be perfectly symmetrical per the client’s instructions. Care was taken so that the tile was well-crafted as to not have any odd pieces visible. She also ensured that the exact details of the flooring would be directly reflected in the design of the ceiling above. Because space was at a premium in the small bathroom, Barbara took care to add additional pieces to make the room appear larger. In the bathing area, she installed a mirror that ran the full length of the wall above the vanity. She also made sure that the vanity itself was installed without legs with lighting that ran the length of the structure beneath. Doing so only not only gave the illusion of the vanity floating, but it provided some much needed depth to the bathroom. “Plus,” said Barbara with a laugh, “late at night you don’t necessarily have to be hit with a deluge of bright light when you go to bathroom. You can just rely on the soft lighting under the fixture.” Color also played an important role throughout the renovation. “The client liked the classic brown and white pairing and I suggested using orange as well”, she explained. “It worked really well as it looked very classic. “ The warm and inviting accent tint found its way to everything from the custom shades to the ceiling. Which is not surprising considering that she believes that adding color to the ceiling is one of her signature style elements. “Too often the knee jerk reaction is to just paint the ceiling white-which I feel is a missed opportunity. I think of the ceiling as being the fifth wall. Especially in a tiled area where there are no walls. I think it really looks special and unique-especially for this client’s project.” The task was completed within four months and produced an end result that was aesthetically both timeless yet surprisingly modern. The clients were understandably thrilled with how Barbara’s firm interpreted their requests. Which, she says, is the ultimate accomplishment. “Helping clients to find their own style is really my forte. They truly serve as my inspiration for my work.” Resource: Barbara Feinstein, Allied ASID B Fein Interiors 51 Greenacres Avenue, Scarsdale, NY 10583 914.261.1114 bfeininteriors.com East Coast Home + Design

JMKA | ARCHITECTS

Kicthen.indd 68

1/16/15 5:35 PM

When the designers at JMKA Architects took on the project, this once classic mid-century home had been dressed as a colonial – right down to the clapboard aluminum siding. The goal of this renovation was to bring it back to its mid-century roots, with the modern conveniences the homeowners desired. Before the renovation, the kitchen lacked style and underwent the most significant transformation during the overhaul of the home. The design team knew they wanted to evoke the mid-century vibe this kitchen lacked, while allowing it to flow with the rest of the home. The most obvious change in this kitchen came with the color selections. Mid-century design is about pastel colors, simple flat panel doors, and appliances with rounded corners & metal pulls. With these trends in mind, the JMKA design team set out to craft the perfect kitchen for this 1950s home. The kitchen was transformed from a contractor-style traditional design into a sleek, midcentury modern kitchen with all the bells and whistles. This one-of-a-kind design features a floor-to-ceiling overhaul that is bathed in natural light. Crisp colors, fun accents, and functional design created the perfect culinary sanctuary and gathering place for this home. The stunning oak floors feature 2 Ÿ quarter sawn red oak to blend with the flooring in the rest of the open layout. The cohesion with the open floor plan from the dining to living to kitchen areas creates the ideal flow for this mid-century design. In order to echo the cathedral ceiling found in the main living space, the designers raised the ceiling in the kitchen, creating an expansive, open space. The windows were replaced to enhance the flow of natural light, yielding a bright, warm area. Custom overlay was created for the cabinets in order to provide a unique design reminiscent of the era. The upper cabinets feature Benjamin Moore white (PM-2), while the lowers provide the perfect balance with Antique Gloss (CSP-695) and Apple Blossom (479). The bright, fun East Coast Home + Design

colors are the perfect accent to this mid-century kitchen. One of the most eye-catching accents in the kitchen is the pendant lighting found above the sink area and counters. Carefully selected by the JMKA designers to provide the perfect focal point, they are mid-century pendants by Astron with a flare in orange. The eye is immediately drawn to these striking fixtures. The appliances in the kitchen offer modern convenience while blending perfectly with the mid-century style of the space. The refrigerator is a 36 GE Stainless Steel Profile; the Oven is a 30 Bosch single wall oven with cooktop; the Hood is a Zephyr Gust under-cabinet; and the Dishwasher is a Bosch Ascenta Series Stainless Steel. With careful attention to detail, the JMKA Architects design team has

transformed this once outdated kitchen into a modern masterpiece evocative of mid-century style. Bright colors, stainless steel appliances, and rich oak floors flow easily with the rest of the home. KATHY CURRIE J M CURRIE ARCHITECTS Led by Kathy Currie, J.M. Currie Architects worked closely with the homeowner to create this tranquil, contemporary kitchen. The main goal of this project was to create a kitchen, which would allow the homeowner to entertain guests without being removed from the action. Because she had a strong focus on the Feng Shui principles, the designers had to maintain close contact with homeowner to ensure the design captured her needs while honoring these principles. The emphasis was to allow the host to face the living area and entrance while cooking in order to maintain Feng Shui balance. At the heart of this design was the placement of the cooktop. Originally found along the back wall where the refrigerator now sits, the former cooktop location forced the host to have her back to guests, which directly conflicts with Feng Shui principles. The design team worked to create a stunning and functional peninsula, which houses the cooktop and provides seating for guests. The peninsula features dark wedge wood veneer, which is echoed throughout the design. Most importantly, it allows the cook to be a part of the conversation with guests in the living area. The cabinets were carefully selected to enhance the contemporary feeling of the space. The base and tall oven cabinets feature the same dark wedge wood veneer found on the peninsula. In stark contrast, the upper and tall storage cabinets feature high gloss off-white lacquer with glass accents. This creates the “Yin & Yang” sentiment this kitchen needed to inspire harmony. The kitchen was designed with flow and balance in mind. Stainless steel accents and appliances throughout the kitchen complete the modern theme. 72

Kicthen.indd 72

The form of the kitchen is matched by the functionality of extra features like the Häfele Magic Corner and a Kitchen Aid Mixer Lift to provide maximum storage space. The homeowner expressly requested a designated place for her coffee maker. The designers’ answer? A rollout coffee station adjacent to the oven. A convenient addition to this already dreamy kitchen, the coffee station adds that extra touch to give the homeowner her every wish. The luminescent lighting fixture above the cooktop enhances the already contemporary atmosphere. Bright and airy, this one-of-a-kind kitchen serves as both a culinary sanctuary and an entertainment hub. Tons of natural light provides the perfect setting for morning coffee and evening toasts. From hosting friends to getting ready for the day, the designers have created a kitchen that allows the homeowner to get the most out of this space. Although not an expansive area, the functional design makes the most of every nook. From the Kitchen Aid Mixer lift to the rollout coffee station, the designers made sure to provide the homeowner with her every request in order to create the Feng Shui-inspired kitchen she envisioned. J.M. Currie Architects paid careful attention to each detail of this unique culinary retreat. Resource: Kathy Currie J.M. CAMI WEINSTEIN INTERIOR DESIGN It’s safe to say that Cami Weinstein design strategy is governed by one simple rule: that anything can serve as the muse for the next big idea. “Oh, I’m always constantly inspired by things that go on around me, “Cami said from her Chappaqua, New York office. “Travel, culture, art, nature. Classical architecture. I’m always looking.” It is perhaps because of these diverging passions that Cami’s full service interior design firm has become synonymous with layered designs that are rich in both color and sophisticated theme. Over the years, she’s been called upon to decorate both residential and commercial spaces from the Hamptons to Los Angeles. However, no matter the project-everything is centered on her customer’s needs. “First and most importantly, I always to take into account my client. I always get their wish list-in terms of lifestyle and budget. And from there, I always to try to meet and exceed those expectations.” Given her talent for creating extraordinary spaces, East Coast Home + Design invited Cami to share with our readers some of her favorite kitchen and bathroom projects. As you can see from the various examples, her gift of combining function with unusual pieces always shines through. Cami’s flair for the unique was certainly on display with her first selection. The client, who included the updated kitchen as part of a renovation projection, was looking for an interesting centerpiece for her English-style kitchen and dining area. The solution? The custom-built island, which was created from one solid piece of stone. “The client wanted something unique, so we searched the stone yards for just the right thing. From the start of the project, we knew that she wanted the cherry red cabinetry and hutch built in. So we had to 74

Kicthen.indd 74

find something that could easily match that.” Luckily, Cami and her team were able to locate the perfect specimen. Still, cutting the stone to the client’s specifications and transporting it proved to be a challenge. “It was absolutely enormous,” recalls Weinstein. “It took six guys to bring it in. The client and I were actually in the dining room because we couldn’t handle the stress of getting it in the door. As for the cuts, we really had to be careful because there were no other pieces that was that large. But we were fortunate that we were able to shape it with limited alterations on our part.” Because the client adored the color, Cami made sure to add accent pieces such as the red lighting fixtures and chairs, while the backsplash by the stove had contrasting metal elements. The final result was a kitchen area that was both elegant yet fun. Not all spaces can be defined by a single theme or object. Sometimes, it actually takes two opposing design themes to create a memorable project. “The wife wanted the white cabinetry and the husband wanted the dark. Unfortunately they couldn’t make up their mind so I suggested that maybe we should try using both.” The design team were able to seamlessly combine the walnut cabinets with white ones. Doing so gave the fixtures an almost furniture-like quality to them. For accents, Cami utilized stainless steel appliances and an antique Carrara backsplash. Because the clients opted out of a formal dining area, the firm also added a wooden prep island that would double as an eating space. “I’m always extremely sensitive to color as well as the weight of color, so blending the multiple elements were really important to me. The

Kicthen.indd 75

great thing about the island is that its neutral tone gave us the ability to bridge the dark and the white so it wasn’t overbearing.” Surprisingly, one of Cami’s favorite places in the home to decorate is the powder room. Although it’s a space that often gets overlooked by interior designers-Cami often views it as an opportunity to truly make a statement. “I happen to like making powder rooms look like little jeweled boxes. I think it is definitely one area in your home that can feel special and unique. It’s kind of a fun space so why not have fun with it.” In the case of this particular project, the space was part of a renovation of an English Tudor-style home in Westchester, Connecticut. The family was one that she has had a long working relationship with, having previously worked redesign projects with both their father and son. “When I work with clients, I try to work collaboratively with them. In the case of the powder room-the clients were young. They were daring with their tastes. They were also very inspired by nature and they loved color. So we really wanted to establish both elements as part of the finished look.” Cami accomplished this by through the use of mosaic flooring and wallpaper patterns that complemented each other. The wallpaper served as a modern interpretation of the flock wall coverings popular in the early part of the 20th century. And the glass flooring was carefully chosen with regards to its deep browns and blues to further associate with the client’s love of the environment. Keeping with the nature theme, twig-like sconces were also selected to provide the right amount of lighting without being overwhelming. Finally, the doors and hardware were all custom made to match with the traditional old-world aesthetics present throughout the rest of the home. The finished space is one the pays homage to its vintage roots without being dated. Which is just the effect that the customer was looking for. Cami’s passion for combining modern and vintage influences are evi76

Kicthen.indd 76

dent in the final passion project that she shared-the recent renovations of her own kitchen and breakfast room.” I guess you can say that I definitely have a pension for older homes,” Weinstein admits with a laugh. Because the kitchen was small, Cami made sure to decorate the space with neutral tones to make the space seem larger. To enhance the area, she installed limestone flooring as well as a Calcutta backsplash. She also utilized some light fixtures from Holly Hunt that demonstrated both contemporary style with classic sensibilities. For extra storage, she added a hutch in the breakfast room to display her extensive collection of English transfer ware. Both the walls of the kitchen and breakfast room were covered in grass cloth to give a sense of continuity to both spaces. However, Cami was careful to add different flooring and lighting so that the dining area would be recognized as a separate entity. The breakfast room is further defined by the furnishings in the space. The wall is adorned with a classic painting by a Russian artist. This space also paired an antique French table with new French chairs upholstered with an avocado ultra-suede fabric. Many designers may shy away from mixing so many different eras and country of origins within a single project. However for Cami, her ability to do so serves as part of her signature style. “Some people have said that my rooms are always layered and my color combinations are very sophisticated. And I do actually love detailed homes. For me, it’s about finding beautiful things while using them in a new way.” Resource: Cami Weinstein Interior Design Cami Weinstein 15 Ridge Drive Chappaqua, NY 10514 914.238.5978 camidesigns.com

used to watch TV or as a computer monitor”. While the TV is also connected to your security system, clients can monitor it within the kitchen. As Matt said, “Many of my clients use this as a baby monitor. This is also helpful while sitting at an island or for kids online as you are monitoring there on line use , all while cooking in your new kitchen or just cooking along with your favorite cooking show.” This

is a concept he designed many years ago and is by far the best thing in kitchen technology. In terms of ambiance, Gallery of Kitchens also uses sound and lighting to set the mood of any occasion all controlled by the kitchen iPad or any Wireless Device. There are many draw appliances in their kitchens and they are also using motorized drawers and doors in the kitchen and just a wave of your hand and the door and drawer open. Appliances have also been reengineered to be totally hidden. “On many jobs we have done we have concealed the microwave and double ovens 100%.” Touch less faucets is also another convenient item as they incorporate that with touch less cabinetry. The countertops that get the most interest from Gallery of Kitchens are thick plate steel or metal top, crackle porcelain tops from France. Also combined sometimes is the TV countertop, which is a TV under the counter top and they have a touch screen option. Matt is custom cutting the wood flooring, and as he said “there are many ways to cut wood like rift cut bias cut and radius cut. We even did a job that was trunk cut as you could count the annual rings in the stumping in the floor.” As Matt emphasized, “I am truly taking every step with my vast background of design, construction theatrical special effects, audio/video electronics and engineering and bringing it all together for my clients. I just love where I am and what I am doing and setting the design trends for the kitchen and bath Industry.” Gallery of Kitchens is celebrating their 25th anniversary in their Westport, CT showroom. They are on the cutting edge of design and are a full-service design construction and build firm. Many of their clients hire them to do there full scale renovations and or additions to their home. If one is on the market for a side table they have just the perfect one, as they have a collection of faux wood and other faux finished side tables from a custom shop in Georgia. Clients can chose from a plethora of custom faux finished options. While they only sell Made in USA furnishings, they also have antiques sourced from France, England, Italy and Scandinavia. Clients can also see more of their antiques at their website www.thehighboy.com. The store also specializes in Italian painted furniture, rococo consoles and Japanese tansu chests. It’s a formula, which makes the shop most unique in Fairfield County. The owner brought a little more Hudson, NY(where he used to reside)to Fairfield County and the shops unique nature seems to work perfectly. Todd the owner is a trained designer and he likes to collect antiques and furnishings with an eye towards placement in a home. The shop is set up as you might see in a well-appointed comfortable living room or library. This gives customers the ability to see how things might be placed in a home setting. The store has sofas, ottomans and lounge chairs for seating which help spark an idea for ones own home. Christopher Todd also has an eye for reproduction lighting and specializes in pieces made by McLean Lighting. It is UL listed for both indoor and outdoor purposes and is all hand-made to order. Styles range from something you might find in the French Quarter to a historic Connecticut Valley colonial. As well as made to order lighting they also specialize in antique and mid-century table lamps. One of the owner’s favorite lamps is a pair of French deco-inspired pillar form lamps with a draped classical figure on each side. While being inspired from the mid-century they are painted terra cotta and fitted with drum shades.
