Letter from the Editor
I
n light of the recent weather, we wanted to get you all revved up for spring and introducing color into your home, both indoors and outdoors. Landscape Architect Eva Chiamulera shares with us some tips on how to keep color outdoors throughout the coming months through the use of plantings such as magnolia trees and such. I just love a magnolia tree in full bloom, it almost looks surreal, like a huge silk flower. The texture and crisp colors are memorizing. Our three well stories, the first by Interior Designer Jamie Herzlinger, the second by Interior Designer Jill Kalman and the third from Dinyar Wadia of Wadia Associates, surprisingly remind me of the the magnolia tree: all of the stories are about three distinctly differently designed spaces, but all of them utilize very clean palates with pops of color in very creative ways. I feel that as we move further from the financial disaster of years past, clean, crisp design is becoming more and more prevalent. A less-is-more mentality. Calm and happiness as our new priorities. Pantone’s Color-of-the-Year Radiant Orchid confirms this shift in our mentalities. Their description of this choice for 2014 is as follows: “Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.” With this in mind, we hope that you enjoy this issue of East Coast Home + Design and you are enjoying a crisp, clean, radiant orchid year so far! Enjoy,

he classic advertising meme, “Everybody doesn’t like something, but nobody doesn’t like Sara Lee,” hails from the same era as the fabulous fabrics of Bailey & Griffin, now revived and revitalized by Duralee Fabrics. What is brilliant, is that Duralee (an upscale home-design company) has retained the essence of the classic luxury brand while adding elements that make it relevant and fresh for today. The discovery of the sizable archive of screens for the brand came as a complete surprise. They were spotted as executives combed through a treasure trove of materials including, artwork, fabric and wallcovering designs at a printwork in Westerly, Rhode Island. The mill, which was part of an acquisition made by Duralee in the summer of 2012, has been in existence since 1937. There is lovely historical symmetry here, because the best way to ensure the re-envisioned brand retains the same luxurious look and feel it was known for, is to utilize the very same mill that originally produced it, one of the only hand-screened

print mills in the country. The Griswold Textile Mill is widely known for its hand-printed, artisan quality fabric. Each Bailey & Griffin pattern calls for use of a specific fabric, though much of the collection is printed on the finest heavy gauge linen, suitable for upholstery without backing, and is specially dyed to provide a consistent basecloth color. Looking from one end of the double print tables, it is a full fifty feet to the far end. Two printers, one on each side; align the screen, squeegee the dye and inspect the imprint as they lift the screen for the next section of cloth. There can be as many as fourteen colors in any given print, which makes the process very labor-intensive. But it’s worth it. Interior Designer Anne Hahn says, “When I saw the scope of the archives, I knew we could take designs that were relevant, 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago, and make them ideally suited for today.” Toward that end, the colors have been updated and significantly, the scale of the patterns has also been adjusted. VP of Marketing Robin Gordon, explains. “Today, the homes that we live in have vistas that are grander, the living spaces are much bigger than they were in Bailey & Griffin’s heyday. In order for these designs to make the appropriate impact, they require a color saturation and pattern scale that can hold its own in an enlarged space.” In the world of home design, border print elements are also making a comeback. Bailey & Griffin have that design piece in their repertoire as well, and like all things design-oriented, application is key. Duralee is a To The Trade design resource company, which means they sell directly to designers. Consumers can create an account to view the product online, create a Favorites list, or visit a showroom. Pillows, curtains, border prints, upholstery, a good designer knows how to utilize all of these elements to actualize new and different looks that enhance the ambiance created by the visual presentation of the fabric. Robin says, “I don’t think Bailey & Griffin is the solution to redoing an entire home – it is something you can incorporate into a room and the expertise of a designer is to work with a customer’s current presentation, to revitalize and reinvent the space. With Bailey & Griffin, you have the option to add it to a current design or make a statement with it as a primary focus.” That said, there are some customers who already have Bailey & Griffin in their home and want to add additional elements in the same pattern. Bailey & Griffin received a request to print a pattern that is not in their current catalogue – something that can only be done for a specific number of yards. Nancy and Henry Kissinger had utilized a particular Bailey & Griffin pattern, they needed more of it, and they wanted to have some extra on hand. That pattern, Peonies Pomegranate, has joined the first of the projected two book Bailey &

Griffin Collection, which now includes 40 patterns. The second book, due out next year, will increase the collection, adding another 15 patterns that will, with various color choices for each new pattern, add up to an additional 60 to 70 design choices. Proud to be Made in America, prices for Bailey & Griffin fabrics range from $140 - $240 per yard. Contact your designer for specific pricing and inventory information. Don’t have a designer? Fabulous Flowering Trees Brighten your Garden Throughout the Season
A
Story by Eva Chiamulera
s the last remnants of snow melts away clouds of pink and white blossoms emerge throughout the region, providing a cheerful reminder that warmer days are ahead. Everyone has that one special moment each spring, perhaps it’s while driving down a street lined with stately columnar pears; their brilliant white flowers creating an inspiring colonnade, or a cheerful pink crabapple that a loved one planted years ago. Regardless of the moment

it’s always sad to see one of these vanish from the landscape, but in recent years Mother Nature has subjected many of our mature trees to a test of the elements, from hurricane force winds to blizzards and ice storms, not to mention coastal floods. Whether you are replacing a cherished flowering tree or just looking to add a pop of color to your landscape there are several factors to consider, besides identifying the desired bloom color and time of bloom, the most important thing is to se-

lect the right tree for the right place. This means matching the plants needs to the space, not only considering the plants light and water requirements but also the soil condition and any spatial restraints. Bursting onto the scene in April, flowering cherries provide an abundance of pink and white blooms. Prunus serrulata ‘Kwanzan’, is known for its double layered flowers that flutter in the wind like ballerina tutus, its pink petals appearing to glow in the April sunlight. Of course this is not a tree intended for small spaces, if space is a concern, the Okame cherry (Prunus x ‘Okame’) is more suitable, this columnar tree can be used to frame a façade or create a tall but narrow screen, a standout when the delicate pale pink flowers arrive. The autumn 32
flowering cherry, Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’, is covered in snowy white flowers not only in spring and sometimes repeats in fall. For those living in coastal areas ornamental cherries are a desirable addition to the landscape due to their salt tolerance. Purple leaf flowering plums (Prunus cerasifera) are a bit smaller in stature and covered in pale pink flowers in early spring. The variety Krauter Vesuvius, also known as the KV plum, has particularly good leaf color that creates a stunning backdrop for adjacent plants throughout the summer, its burgundy leaves compliment pink and purple hydrangeas or can contrast the bold yellow of Black-eyed Susans.

3/9/14 4:11 PM
If you are in search of a petite statement piece for your landscape, weeping redbuds, Cercis canadensis ‘Pendula’, provide a cascade of pink or lavender blooms in spring before the leaves emerge, these sweet pea like flowers are tight to the stems of the plant, creating a unique effect, but the show does not stop there, its heart shaped leaves emerge, often starting out one color and transforming to another. This plant has been growing in popularity over the past decade in addition to the weeping forms, there are conventional tree forms as well, bred not only for blooms but the variety of leaf colors including shades of purple, ‘Ruby Falls’, golden apricot ‘Rising Sun’, and variegated ‘Silver Cloud’. A wonderful contrast to redbuds are dogwoods, one of the most popular flowering trees in our area, creating drifts of pink and white blooms throughout the region in spring. The first to bloom are the native American dogwoods (Cornus florida), followed by the Rut-

gers hybrids such as ‘Celestial’ and ‘Stellar Pink’, and lastly the long blooming Japanese dogwoods (Cornus Kousa), which continue the floral display into early summer. Some of the lesser known flowering trees in our region have unique characteristics and bloom later in the year. The fragrant white blooms of the native fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus) are uniquely shaped, the long narrow tassel like petals move in the lightest of breezes, definitely a conversation starter for these modestly sized multi-stem trees. Japanese snowbells (Styrax japonicum) are another late spring bloomer, its branches covered in brilliant white bells; the bark also has an interesting mottled pattern to it as the tree matures. Stewartia pseudocamellia has white camellia like flowers with golden centers in early summer, this medium sized flowering tree is pyramidal in form when it is younger, but transforms to a more open habit as it matures, it has fascinating exfoliating bark with shades of cinnamon and tan. By using evergreens such as boxwoods or rhododendrons as a back drop to the stewartia it allows the bark colors to standout in the winter landscape. The evergreen southern magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora) provide one of the largest flowers in our region, these citrus scented white 34
blooms appear on the plant throughout the summer, unlike their deciduous relatives there isn’t a big show all at once rather the plant blooms sporadically, allowing you to appreciate each bloom for a few days before moving onto the next. Although we can’t grow the larger varieties here in the northeast, some of the smaller ones such as ‘Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ and ‘Edith Bogue’ make a wonderful addition to any garden in our warmer zones. These are but a few of the many varieties of flowering trees available in our region, as you consider adding to your garden or landscape please make sure to consider the plants needs as well as your own aesthetic. Selecting the right plant for a space is essential to creating a planting which you can enjoy for years to come. Eva I. Heavy Metal Kitchens Story by Sarah Robertson
Heavy metal has found its way back onto the fashion runways and music scene, so why not in the kitchen? Here are a few ideas to bring some metal glam into your kitchen, whether you are renovating or just changing up the look of your current kitchen.
Ann Morris Antiques’ custom pot racks are a long time favorite of mine, mixing sophisticated traditional styling with rich metal finishes. They can also be crafted with integral holophane lights. Made entirely of cast brass, the pot racks are offered in 9 custom finishes or unlacquered brass.
Of course no article on heavy metal would be complete without some robust cabinet pulls. I love these rectangular English bin pulls from White Chapel Ltd. They are far more hefty than the average cup pull, and in a polished nickel finish, add considerable shine to your drawer faces. Crafted from cast brass, they are available in 5 finishes.
For a more dramatic commitment to metal, consider metal countertops on the perimeter or island. Almost impervious to stains, metal countertops will develop a patina of age over time that lends an old world artisanal richness to your kitchen. Brooks Custom, in Mt. Kisco, NY, specializes in specialty wood and metal fabrication, including countertops crafted in bronze, copper, stainless, zinc and pewter. 36

Arteriors Home’s Mason pendant is a perfect example of “industrial meets glam lighting. Mason comes in a hammered blackened silver finish with brass accents, and is a great size to use in multiples over the kitchen island.
This cool freestanding metal bar cabinet, from LA-based Noir, would lend a modern, industrial flair to the family room, den or great room, wherever drinks are served! Although designed as a bar cabinet, it would make a statement as a display cabinet as well.
Olive knuckle hinges are a unique alternative to the standard barrel hinge. This hammered hinge by Nanz is available in nearly 100 finishes, adding a unique detail to new or antique case pieces and cabinetry. I would love to pair these hinges with the Arterior Mason pendants!

The Outdoor Center Island The New Hub For Outdoor Entertaining
A
Story by Kevin Ambrosio
ny person who has spent any time entertaining in his/her home has probably noticed how, no matter what the occasion or event, guests, whether family, friends or acquaintances, tend to gather around the center island of the kitchen. It is a place where people share conversations, make memories and burn the midnight oil. As the weather turns warmer and homeowners are thinking about spending more time outside entertaining, one thing to consider is bringing the concept of the center island to the outdoor living area. Much like it does indoors, an outdoor center island can become the focal point of any outdoor gathering. Through a thoughtful design, the center island can become the main focal point of any outdoor living space where you would not only prepare food, but enjoy time with your friends and family while spending time outdoors. All other elements such as outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, grilling stations, pizza ovens and trellis’s can revolve around and complement the center island. When it comes to the design configuration of your center island you are only limited by your imagination and, of course your budget. As you design your center island, focus on the type of outdoor meals and entertaining style you enjoy most. Center islands come in all differ38
ent sizes and shapes depending on the desired specific use. They can be as simple as a rectangle with countertop space for buffet dining or an elaborate full kitchen that can include countless amenities and/or a covered roof structure with seating around. Although the center island can serve any use or style you desire, there are some basic design parameters you should consider. Just like in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location! The placement of the center island is crucial to the success of your outdoor space and use of the center island. In order to make the center island the focal point you desire, all other outdoor elements should revolve around the center island such as outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, pizza ovens and other dining areas. It’s also preferable to keep the center island and your indoor kitchen in close proximity to one other making easier to go back and forth. Remember that this space will be an extension of your home and should flow naturally. Once you have established a location suitable for the center island, the design of the island should accommodate enough countertop space for food prep, cooking, and displaying of food. Other things to consider in the design might be space for beverages, buffet dinning and a social bar area which allows people to sit, eat and socialize. All of these elements can contribute
www.eastcoasthomepublishing.com
Kitchen Cookbook.indd 38
3/9/14 4:01 PM
to the popularity and success of a center island. Depending on your cooking, dining and entertaining needs there are many elements which can be incorporated into the design. These can include sinks, appliances, storage cabinets and type of materials which compliment the architecture of the home and the landscape. You can also define the space by adding an architectural element above the center island such as a pergola, roof or shade system. This will not only provide you with shelter from the elements, but it will also allow you to add elements such as lighting, ceiling fans, patio heaters, outdoor televisions and speakers. So why not rethink your back yard? Think about what a center island could bring to your outdoor space. Bring the party outside and make your outdoor kitchen and center island the focus of your entertaining. Make it a place to gather together and enjoy friends and family; a place for making treasured memories that will last a lifetime. Ambrosio Landscape Solutions Redding. CT 06896 Kevin C. By innovatively angling traditional wide wood planks and placing lineally cut ash gray stone into a herringbone pattern, Herzlinger creates a modern feel.
“a lot of care and consideration. First, she needed to ensure that the design worked for an active family with three grown sons and two high school age daughters. Second, she had to address the Federicos’ stylistic objectives of incorporating traditional elements into a modern atmosphere and showcasing certain pieces of modern art. Being the artist that she is, Herzlinger designed gorgeous, light and airy interior spaces that flowed into each other as seamlessly as she fused stylish sophistication with livability and traditional classicism with modern. The kitchen exemplifies how Herzlinger synthesized these goals. Given his position, the Federicos had needs for a family kitchen in which chefs could provide cooking demonstrations. Herzlinger creates an exhibition space by expanding the kitchen to include two oversized island counters, at which guests could enjoy visiting chefs or the family could eat breakfast. By simply angling traditional wide planked floors and paneling squares on the side treatments of the counters and above the cupboards, Herzlinger creates a modern environment. She also masterfully balances white walls, ceilings, counters, appliances, and cupboards, along with light fixtures that seem to float, against bittersweet chocolate brown plank floors and barstools to create a bright, airy space with a sense of presence. As the kitchen flows into the family room, so does its color scheme of light tones and chocolate brown. Chocolate silk throw East Coast Home + Design

Grey flannel ultra-suede square panels cover the walls and grey flannel wool sateen draperies line the windows pillows are scattered on top of a clean-lined modern pale blushbeige sectional that is surrounded by a light colored ceiling, walls and floors. This color palette and style highlight the large piece of primary colored modern art on the wall behind the sectional and complement the large brown toned modern painting of horses on the dining room wall that is visible in the background. The inviting sensation of this room creates a comfortable area for a large family to spend time and relax. Herzlinger carries this elegant, open motif and color scheme into the living room. Once again the walls and seating are light-toned. Diaphanous window shades invite natural sunlight to further brighten the room. The wood and gold frame over the fireplace that resembles the outline of a flower accentuates this sensation of weightlessness by creating interest without stopping the eye, maintaining the room’s fluidity. The chocolate brown floors and a rich brown toned area rug ground this bright, airy space. In a corner of the room chocolate brown banco seating, finished with light toned throw pillows, adds further balance and interest. Against this backdrop, the glossy black baby grand piano and vivid large modern painting of a couple pop into prominence. Mr. Federico’s retreat, his “man cave,” reverses the color scheme 48

seen in the other rooms, creating a masculine impression, and exemplifies Herzlinger’s keen attention to detail, which is what sets her designs apart. Here, grey flannel ultra-suede square panels cover the walls and grey flannel wool sateen draperies line the windows. The pattern of squares are made out of hammered nail heads and echoed in the decorative tape along the edges of the draperies and repeated in the chocolate suede frame of the sofa that borders the chocolate leather seat cushions. The square shapes themselves are replicated in the white coffered ceiling, forcing the eye to balance the dark walls against the white ceiling. The antique rug with an Agra pattern of pale blue and gold tones and the round open white light fixture suspended from the ceiling lighten the room both figuratively and literally. The manufacturer of the light fixture, Fuse Lighting, chose to feature a picture of this room as part of its national ad campaign. The color palette and idea of creatively using traditional elements to create a unique modern look continues into the powder room. Herzlinger darkens the top portion of the wall by covering it with brownblack wallpaper containing very fine gold pinstripes but lightens the lower portion of the wall and the floor by covering them with pale
ash gray stone. By innovatively placing this lineally cut stone in a herringbone pattern on the floor, Herzlinger freshens up the room. Similarly, she updates a traditional Louis the XV sink by finishing it with black lacquer and a traditional round gold framed mirror by surrounding it with a light weight, modern, loose frame of wire and glass intaglios. The finished product is a unique, interesting, current room that incorporates traditional elements. The master bedroom, which reverts to the light toned walls with chocolate accents, completes the refined, airy, modernized classic sense that pervades the home. The traditional sleigh bed is updated by upholstering it in a greyed out blue and finishing it with a dark walnut clean line edge. These lines are replicated in the rectangular shaped mirrors placed on either side of the bed. Gold leaf squars that are painted onto these frames create a modern geometric feel. The light fixtures chosen -- clear lamp bases with cylindrical shaped shades, a French chandelier with thin curved arms wrapped in silk cord and dangling tassels, and Ruhlmann sconces in the master bath –accentuate the space’s airiness and fluidity. Together these elements form the perfect setting for the colorful modern art above the bed. While takEast Coast Home + Design

ing a similar approach in the daughter’s bedroom, Herzlinger keeps it fun and youthful by adding an unusual chandelier made of paper. The creativity and innovativeness seen in Herzlinger’s design for this home is equally apparent in the new showroom she recently opened in her hometown of New York City. Unlike other showrooms, Herzlinger’s showroom is open to the public as well as designers and stages her new line of completely customizable furniture, all made the USA, so that viewers can see how these pieces work with various types of wallpaper, lighting, rugs, and accessories. One of the pieces in the new collection Herzlinger finds most “daring” is the Park Avenue table shown as a dining room table. It has “carved ends that make up a strong geometric statement, turning this table into a showstopper.” As it is a custom piece, it can be completely resized to serve as a desk or an accent piece or the legs can be moved in from the edge if desired. In creating this showroom, Herzlinger collaborates with some of her favorite providers. For instance, the walls are lined with 25 panels of Studio E wallpaper, which Herzlinger calls one of the most stunning hand-made “Venetian plaster in patterns on paper.” It is made in New York City. Carlos de la Puente provides a variety of stunning antique light fixtures. For instance, a 1940s French crystal beaded basket light is hung across from and reflected in one of Herzlinger’s silver leaf backed wall mirrors and above a mirrored dresser. Linda Horn, another icon of style and taste, accessorizes the room with her
selection of antiques. Leaving no detail unattended, Herzlinger also provides design help in her showroom or online through JH Online to both end users and designers and offers an online site, jamieshop.com, from which clients can purchase their items. This site not only enables end users and designers to browse through over 400 “to the trade only” manufacturers but to seek design assistance as they go through the process. Jamieshop.com arranges everything from the samples of fabrics and finishes on the furniture to door to door shipping and installation right into your home. This pioneering idea offers a new level of collaboration in the design industry and a new level of access for end users to design. Herzlinger’s results in both interior design and business are nothing less than the masterstrokes of an artist. inyar Wadia’s signature of refined quality and meticulous attention to detail is clearly imprinted throughout the NYC apartment of Kusum and Sanjiv Das. Given that he and his architectural firm Wadia Associates have built an international reputation over the last 30 years on excelling at all types of traditional styles ranging from Colonial Revival to French Normandy, Georgian to English, and Tudor manor to American shingle home, it may seem that his work should be difficult to recognize. Yet, each of his projects exude superiority, richness and attentiveness to detail that transcend the architectural style of the project and simply say Wadia. This renowned architect extends his versatility to the sizes and types of his projects. After seeing fabulous homes that Wadia has designed, many mistakenly think that he only designs large homes for wealthy clients. To the contrary, Wadia designs a vast array of smaller projects, such as apartments in New York City and additions to homes. Further, given that Wadia has established a large network of connections and resources, he is able to produce the highest quality results for minimal cost, sometimes East Coast Home + Design

even below market prices. As Wadia notes, “You don’t have to use expensive materials to make a project look good.” Thus, the fine Wadia product is financially accessible to a vast range of clientele. Kusum Das’ fabulous experience in working with Wadia on her NYC two bedroom apartment exemplifies that regardless of the size of the project, each client feels that their project is a priority. Even though her apartment might be on the smaller end of the spectrum, Das felt that Wadia and his colleagues from Wadia Associates, Phillip Dodd who was the senior project architect and Saranda Berisa who was the decorator, were all very professional, extremely accessible, and gave her 100% of their professional judgment. Throughout the design process, Wadia met with Mr. and Mrs. Das at his office every other Sunday, where they had tea, went over plans, answered questions and made choices. Mrs. Das referred to it has “the best part of Sunday ” since she really enjoyed Wadia’s warmth and humor and found him particularly attentive to what the woman wanted in the apartment. As Das emphasized, “It is not just that he was doing our home, he was a warm, nice person who has your best interest at heart and he is giving 100% to your project at a time convenient to you.” Wadia enjoys meeting with clients on the weekend because he prefers to work with them when they are at ease and not stressed or distracted by the weekday activities. Wadia’s objectives were to gut the apartment and redesign the space so that it maximized the use of the space given that they had a college age daughter, created the feel of a pre-world war apartment in one built in the 1980s, kept consistent with fung shui principals, and capitalized on the city views. Wadia met each objective brilliantly. With respect to maximizing space, he turned the second bedroom into a library that could double as a guest room by opening the wall to the living room to create an archway with pocket doors and by putting in two queen-sized murphy beds that appear as wainscoted walls between bookshelves when they are not in use. Ingeniously, the lower portions of these bookshelves pull out to become night stands when needed. To create the feel of a pre-world war apartment, he laid elegant parquet floors throughout, plastered all the ceilings, and inserted interesting ceiling moldings of that ilk in every room. He even added a fireplace and shelving in the master bedroom to enhance the pre-war atmosphere. He also addressed a fung shui problem in a clever manner. It is poor fung shui to see doors to the kitchen and the bathroom in the foyer. Unfortunately these could not be changed structurally. Wadia hid the doors by covering them with antique mirrors that also amplified the foyer and fit in with the décor of the home. Wadia also infused this transitional style apartment with an Indian overtone, to reflect the Dases Indian background. One immediately feels the Indian influence upon entering the foyer and seeing the custom carved niche built to house the 1000 pound statue of the Hindi supreme god Vishnu, which came from New Dehli. Mrs. Das explained that according to Hinduism, the goddess of wealth and prosperity is Laxmi. Laxmi is said to bring wealth to those who deserve it and is also the wife of the god Vishnu. When she is in the home she brings wealth and prosperity and she will be wherever Vishnu is. The wallpaper in the foyer, as well as material covering the dining room chairs and other pieces of furniture around the home, also add an Indian tone. Mrs. Das and her family love their home. Wadia’s success with the Das apartment and his other works stems in part from the fact that he addresses every aspect of a project with proper planning, attentiveness to detail and responsibility, including obtaining permits, dealing with building boards and planning boards – processes that can impede many but that he usually breezes through because of the deliberateness of his approach. Dodd, Berisa, his office manager and others have all been at Wadia for many years and provide the ability to offer clients architectural and interior design services. Of course, if a client would like to work with an outside interior designer they are happy to do so. Wadia has worked with many including Ellie Cullman of New York City and David Herchik of Washington, DC. As Wadia mentioned to Cindy Reinfert of Greenwich, CT, he is happy East Coast Home + Design

to collaborate with other designers. Wadia, who was actually born in India and educated in large part there, was greatly influenced by the architecture in India. He explains that the English used to view Bombay and Mumbai as their “capital” of the world and put great effort into the architecture of that city as a way to “flex their muscles.” These cities have one of the best presentations of Gothic architecture in the world and beautifully landscaped squares and plazas. Wadia was also influenced by the architecture in South Bombay and in Baroda, where he received wonderful training at the School of Architecture. Wadia loves to travel and while traveling collects ideas and details that he incorporates into his various projects. Fittingly his projects can be found all over the globe. While there is certainly a concentration of Wadia projects in Fairfield County and New York City, you can find his designs in Florida, China, Mumbai, Bombai and Sri Lanka, as well as other parts of the world. Last year he designed six French style homes in China. Looking to the future, he is considering opening a satellite office in Florida, to accommodate his many clients there, and possibly a temporary office space to meet clients in New York City. Despite the mystique that follows such a world renowned architect, Wadia sees himself as an approachable “low maintenance regular person” who you might see on the street in blue jeans. Rather Wadia humbly notes he is “glad to be in Fairfield County,” feels “privileged to be provided the opportunity to design beautiful homes, apartments and gardens, and “continually strives to provide the best services to all [his] clients regardless of the size of their project.” ARCHITECT Wadia Associates Dinyar Wadia 134 Main Street New Canaan, CT 06840 203.966.0048 wadiaassociates.com GENERAL CONTRACTOR Joseph Kusnick A.E. here pale hues abound in a living space, Jill Kalman, owner of Bella Interiors of Westport, likes to introduce a punch of vivid color. Recently, Kalman did just that, bringing her signature touch to the understated neutral palette of a roomy Westport colonial, while managing to imbue the outsized space with warmth and personality using architectural elements. Entering this formidable home—7,000 square feet replete with high ceilings and open, airy rooms clad in soft earth tones, Kalman saw her mission as twofold: Pepper the color scheme with some lively attitude, and also counter the vastness of the home, built in 1988. The owner of this home had consistently gravitated toward muted tones,

Kalman works with local artists to give her designs a beautiful finish with that appealing pop of color she loves. For this home, she found seascapes by Nell Bernegger and Dani Renchard, and an abstract piece by Kerri Rosenthal. and persisted in that preference for the makeover by Kalman. “That’s what she was comfortable living with,” explained Kalman, whose own design aesthetic likewise includes a preference for neutral investment pieces that should be adaptable over time. Yet Kalman does work in many genres, as any good designer will do, adroitly decorating for a variety of palettes. Before the whirlwind of furnishings and fabrics could begin, the house needed architectural improvements to overcome the somewhat intimidating space. “It was big, bright and airy,” Kalman admitted, “but the downfall was that it felt empty and uninviting.” Together with her clients, Kalman chose to add paneled molding throughout the house and cover the living room ceiling with weathered beams. Further enhancements involved built-in custom cabinetry, including bookcases, shelving and storage added in many locations. Fireplaces were rebuilt with new stonework and mantels. “You don’t feel lost anymore,” laughed Kalman, “and none of the furniture feels dwarfed.” Kalman complemented the muted color selections in the revamped spaces with a range of textures in new fabrics, window treatments and furnishings. “The layering of earth tones with textures creates a warm, easy feeling,” explained Kalman. After the main nuts and bolts of the interior had been established, Kalman incorporated her love of accessorizing by adding artwork, sculpture, and punches of color in pillows and other accent pieces. “Accessories are the jewelry of a room,” she
said. “I pull in those things that tie it all together.” Kalman works with local artists to give her designs a beautiful finish with that appealing pop of color she loves. For this home, she found seascapes by Nell Bernegger and Dani Renchard, and an abstract piece by Kerri Rosenthal. Also profoundly affecting her design work was the decorative painting used throughout the house: on the dining room walls, bedroom dresser, foyer and bedroom lamps and kitchen cabinets. “Artwork brings a life into a room without overpowering or dominating it,” said Kalman. “It just works, and the owners love it.” Client satisfaction is Kalman’s primary concern. “When I’m done and gone,” she says, “I want that client to walk into whatever space I’ve done and just go, ‘Aww, it’s beautiful.’” She named her business Bella (Spanish for “beautiful”) Interiors based on her feeling that any space, no matter the size, can be made beautiful. “That’s the impetus in my work,” she stated. “It’s about bringing beauty into your living environment; there’s no reason to live without luxury and good design.” With the spaces brought down to scale, Kalman began her transformation—starting with the living room. The previously overly formal and underused space was guided, and gilded, into a warm and livable gathering spot. Keeping what she could (e.g., the size and shape of the existing sofa was good), Kalman worked her magic. She removed the sofa’s dated skirt, exposed and stained the legs a rich dark brown, East Coast Home + Design

New paneling as well as soft and rich fabrics update the dining room, which had been dark and heavy. and reupholstered the piece with a linen-like fabric. As usual, her details took styling to the next level: pyramid studs from Samuel & Sons trim the sofa’s horizontal band, and navy and aubergine hues in the accent pillows from Bungalow of Westport provide a glorious splash of color. A weathered-wood coffee table, custom-ordered through Bella Interiors, references the beams added to the ceiling. The custom-made armchairs with their rounded backs bring curvature to the room, as well as provide reflective light from their textured fabric. “Even though we’re using all earth tones, the variation of texture creates interest in the room and picks up light in different ways,” Kalman explained. The Schumacher fabric of the drapery panels was brought into the complementary custom pillows for additional style cohesion. The special bench from Dovecote (Westport), with its animal-print fabric and Lucite legs, provides a taste of the sublime. “The living room was the loveliest space, and it wasn’t being used,” said Kalman. “Now it’s one of the owner’s favorite rooms in the house and she’s in there all the time.” The “fabulous” sculptural sconces on either side of the fireplace are from Vaughn Lighting. The artwork above the mantle is by Renchard, and gives the room an additional color pop. “When you walk in the room, it catches your eye, “said Kalman, describing its effect. “It’s vibrant, but it’s also a beautiful, serene image.” The family and dining rooms were also treated to new paneling and other architectural

modifications, such as custom cabinetry and stonework. Custom drapes and pillows from Schumacher updated the family room’s style, as did new paint and plush fabric for the client’s own two-person ottoman—giving it a “whole new image and life.” Accessories for the family room include shell bowls on the new coffee table, a kidney-shaped floor vase, and shell and lacquered boxes on the shelves, all from Cocoon of Greenwich. A Global Views chest and mirror replaced an outdated cabinet, providing tailored architectural elements in the big silver ring drawer handles and chunky mirror above. The dining room, which had been dark and heavy, was made softer and more current with Gretchen Bellinger fabric, decorative wall paint and other fine touches. The walls have a creamy background with a custom pattern done in a metallic paint, which complements the chandelier. “Everyone who walks in the room thinks it’s wallpaper; they have to go up and touch it,” said Kalman of the wall treatment, “It’s gorgeous.” The tufted chairs were done in rich grey velvet, and the ribbed area rug from Spark is a silvery grey that shimmers. The formerly “very 80s” master bathroom (with a big chunky step-in Jacuzzi tub) had great space but begged to be brought into the 21st century. Dramatic and sophisticated entry into the area was generated immediately by a sparkling ball chandelier. “I knew immediately I was going to use that chandelier,” said Kalman with a smile, “and that it was going to be perfect.” Fearful of a disco-ball effect, but putting her faith in the designer, the client was delighted by the result. More luxury came in the form of the terrycloth-upholstered ottoman outfitted with special gliders. The result is comfortable, functional seating that moves without slippage and easily glides across the marble floor—warmed by radiant heat—without scratching. Custom built-in shelves and storage in “towers” next to the tub enhance the effect of the room’s architectural elements, seen in the columns and arched window. As privacy was not an issue, the draperies were made from sheer white Italian linen fabric, bringing an ethereal elegance to the space. “We brought the room a great sort of spa feeling,” Kalman exclaimed. The master bedroom was another area that needed a complete overhaul to make it soft and comfortable, according to Kalman, who feels a bedroom should be a luxurious haven at the end of the day. “You spend so much time in your bedroom, it should feel fabulous,” she said. The bed’s headboard was custom-made by Bella Interiors, as was the bench at the foot of the bed. The bench design was inspired by midcentury designer Mies van der Rohe but updated with an upholstered top and raw wood legs painted antique silver. The new carpet’s sculptural pattern gives off a shimmery reflective light, which ties to the Bungalow Five mirrored side tables as well as the sculptural triple-gored lamps in grey from Robert Abbey. Again, the designer kept to the earth tones preferred by the client, but tossed a pink fur pillow onto the bed for fun. “That’s my way of saying ‘let’s just lighten it up a little,’” Kalman illuminated. Just like the eyes are the windows to the soul, our closets are the doors to our outer self – the person we present to the world. Our closets are revealing because they contain the remnants of who we were, who we are and who we aspire to be. Two people could have the same hair color, height, weight and general appearance but what is in their closets is how they differentiate themselves through style, color preferences and accessories. If you were to take all the items from your closets over the years they would tell the story of your life. Closets can also evoke strong emotions – from stress to loneliness to heightened confidence and love. Clothes that don’t fit or remind us of loved ones, power suits that give us confidence to outfits worn at special occasions. Closets are full of memories which makes the purging process quite difficult. As the co-owner of a custom closet company, I meet many interesting people with very interesting closets and diverse reasons for scheduling an appointment. It is my job to determine why I’ve been called – sometimes it’s as simple as wanting to leverage the closet space more effectively. Other times it is to completely redesign a closet following a divorce or to find a way to display a coveted shoe or handbag collection. Oftentimes it is a combination of all of these factors. Regardless of the motivation for their call, it is my job to listen to and understand what each person is hoping to achieve and provide a solution that meets their expectations - from functionality to design excellence to budgetary constraints. The Top Reasons to Call a Custom Closet Company - Purchasing a New Home - One of the most overwhelming aspects of new home purchases is deciding where everything is going to go post move. - Be proactive about calling for a complimentary in-home consultation prior to your closing which typically provides sufficient time to have new closet systems installed right after ownership transfers. - Selling an Existing Home - Storage space or lack thereof is a huge differentiator when it comes to selling a home. - Evaluate your storage space pre-listing and determine what cost-effective upgrades you can make to enhance storage space and make your house stand out in the crowd. Creating More Space It is not always easy to increase your square footage as your family grows so innovative storage solutions are required to provide more functionality and efficiency as time goes by. Make a list of the areas that are no longer working for your family and systematically tackle one area ata time in the order of priority. Enhancing the Space you Have. If the kids are grown, the bedrooms are empty and the possibilities abound! Turn a bedroom into a fabulous walk-in closet/dressing room. The process of organizing closet space is personal and should be designed for the way you live which is why we put so much emphasis on listening to the client. It is our job to first and foremost understand what the client is looking to achieve. What problem are we solving for? We also need to understand the make-up of each person’s wardrobe and accessories, their height and personal preferences. We pride ourselves on accurate measurements which can make or break a successful installation. We also look at each space and determine what practical applications and what accessories will help facilitate the optimum solution. The 10 Most Popular Closet Accessories - Belt Rack - Tie Rack
- Valet Rod - Jewelry Insert - Shoe Cubbies - Hamper - Hook Strip - Glide Out Pant Rack - Puck LED Lighting - Wardrobe Lift Many new homes provide added storage opportunities due to ceiling height. Wardrobe lifts which were originally designed for people in wheelchairs who couldn’t reach the closet pole, have evolved into use at higher elevations to in effect add another level of hanging. Gliding pant racks also leverage space by utilizing special hangers on a glide out mechanism that requires less height for closets with lower ceilings. Hampers are now built into closet systems so dirty clothes are out of sight and come with removable bags for easy transport to the dry cleaners or laundry room. Plug and play as well as battery operated lighting options abound. And then there are the mainstays of closet design – belt and tie racks and valet rods. Closets are also evolving into enhanced living spaces with docking stations, seating, tv’s, music, artwork, coffee machines and other amenities that turn getting dressed in the morning into an experience rather than a chore. Amy Van Arsdale – Professional Organizer If you have a cluttered, poorly decorated or somewhat disorganized living space, home relaxation can be virtually impossible! For some, the most challenging tasks we face in our circle of home chaos can be parting with objects and clothes we love that are no longer serving us. Why is this? What is it about clothes, and other possessions, that brings up a palpable sense of loss when we think of separating from them? They are not living. They do not love us back. So what causes this and how can we work through it so that we can reach the peace of a pared down life? By spending money on an article of clothing or other items, we’ve traded away the possibility of spending that money on some other thing that we desire now. So choosing to give up an item that you’ve paid for can bring up these very strong feelings of guilt/loss. It isn’t so much the item that we fear losing, it’s the lost opportunities that we ponder. It might not be easy, but tossing out or donating items/clothes is key to making room in your home. Take the closet, I advise my clients to donate anything they haven’t worn in more than two years that has no intrinsic value. I’m not opposed to keeping your “skinny” clothes (and I know we all do it) but for goodness sakes you don’t need to keep all of it. Styles change, your tastes change, your body shape changes so chances are good that when you get back to that size you’re going to want new stuff anyway. Ask yourself if you’d buy this item today, or if it is worthy enough to take up space in my closet? Like those business suits from before you were a Mom and now wearing yoga pants all day with the kids. Or the sweaters that you’ve had for 10 years that have reindeers dashing along the front. Ask yourself “Do these serve me now?” Springtime is the best time to peel back the heavy layers and freshen up your look. If you’re one of the lucky ones that has a large enough closet with no need to rotate seasonally, then keep jeans and t’s folded from light to dark in a drawer or hanging basket, all heavy sweaters should be folded while lighter sweaters can be hung. For blouses and dresses, I recommend hanging by color East Coast Home + Design

rather than length. I also like to start with strapless and go to longsleeve. Never leave your dresses, or any other clothes, in the dry cleaning or plastic garment bags. The chemicals from dry cleaning attack the fibers of your clothing and cause damage. I like purses out of their dust bags and to have as many visible as possible. It’s hard to change bags if you can’t see them. They don’t generally get damaged out of their dust bags, so enjoy the view. Scarves folded in piles by color and material works best, and makes it easy to pull one out without ruining the organization of the rest. As you purge, make a list of new fresh clothes you may need and keep it in your purse when out shopping. For hats, I love hat boxes. Take photos of the hats and glue them to the outside of their boxes. I prefer shoes out of the box organized by color and style with the right shoe toe and left shoe heel facing out because it saves space. I always hide tennis shoes and flip-flops in a basket down below. As for jewelry, I am partial to a built-in drawers in one’s closet or dresser in order to keep things neat and uncluttered. It’s also a great way to see what you have and makes it easy to keep 76
hidden from plain sight. Jewelry is also a huge clutter bug. If you are not wearing it, check out pawn shops or estate jewelers. They usually pay well. Maybe take the money to buy a new piece that matches your style today? Remember, just because you have the space for something doesn’t mean you have to fill it. Check your closet this spring. There may be plenty of perfectly good clothes better suited for someone else.

Guzzetta Launches Leather Accessories
F
Story by Diana Sussman
inally, your elegant office at home or at work can finally look absolutely finished and need not be cluttered by the hodgepodge of standard staplers, tape dispensers, pencil holders and other required desk items. Frustrated with generic items that did not coordinate with the overall look of the office space and inspired by the increase in the number of female executives, Paul Guzzetta and Philip Shortt of Interiors Haberdashery have combined forces with Joey Jacober and his wife Dana Jacober to launch a series of luxurious leather Premier Desks Sets, Deluxe Desk Sets, Travel Desk Sets and Accessory Sets. They believe that these collections will help interior designers complete the decor and cement the impression that successful, high end professionals and executives seek to make. The Premier Desk Sets are by far the most comprehensive on the market and include a desk pad, letter tray, scissor and letter opener, desk clock, letter holder, tape dispenser, stapler, pencil cup, magnetic clip holder, letter tray, post-it holder and business card holder. Focusing on every detail, each set also includes a double sided picture frame, so visitors can view one picture while the host views another. Of course, if someone only wants the basic office essentials, the Deluxe Desk Set includes a desk pad, scissor and letter opener, letter holder, stapler, pencil cup, letter holder, and post-it holder.
Given a successful executive is always on the move, this team has also introduced the cleverly designed Travel Desk. Your iPad or tablet fits snugly into a leather clip and a leather flap covers and protects the screen. When you are ready to use the iPad or tablet, the leather fold divider underneath it can be easily pushed into a stand. There are also pockets for cell phones, passports, credit cards and letter size paperwork. Of course, not only is this folio ideal for travel but it coordinates perfectly with the Premier or Deluxe Desk Set when back at the office since it is offered in the same leather finishes. The Accessory Set, the final set in the series launched, is extremely versatile and can be used in an office or by itself in a powder room. The set includes a waste basket, envelope box and tissue box. However, the waste basket can also serve as a magazine holder and the envelope box can easily be used to hold guest towels. Consequently, while designed to coordinate with each of the Premier or Deluxe Desk Sets, it also stands on its own. All of these sets in this series, which are launched under the name Paolo Guzzetta Firenze, are manufactured in Florence Italy and fabricated out of the highest quality, full grain calf leather, which is carefully treated in a multi-step process to create the appearance of various “skins. To ensure they can coordinate with each other, they are all available in the same leather finishes and colors. Crocodile Collection is ornamented with Palladium bars and available in six colors - chutney, white, fluoride, ink, terra and black. The Metallic Crocodile Collection is accented with a double stud detail band made from Palladium and available in black and silver. To create the metallic sheen, the leather is gently frosted. The Classic Crocodile Collection is only available in a rich tan color and is decorated with a subtle leather band detailed with Palladium ornaments. The Python Collection, which truly looks like a fantastically colored python skin, is accented by Palladium buckles and available in camouflage, pink, and billiard. The Pearlized Shagreen Collection looks strikingly like the textured skin of a stingray, except it has a pearl sheen to it. It is available in coriander and horizon. Regardless of which set one chooses, each makes an elegant presentation upon its arrival. The same company that packages Prada products has designed beautiful boxes that nest the components of each of the collections in layers and completes the look with a matching, heavy-weight shopping bag. These collections are available on the internet, at Interiors Haberdashery located at 30 Commerce Road in Stamford, and through various interior designers. They will be available at certain high end department stores shortly. At Interiors Haberdashery each of the col80
lections in every finish and color are on display for easy viewing. While you are there, you might be lucky enough to get a glimpse of the horizon and pink desk sets being launched in the spring. These sets were inspired by images of Nantucket beach homes. Guzzetta, Shortt and the Jacobers are able to create such chic and creative luxury leather accessories in large part because of their ability to draw on their previous experience in the fashion industry. Guzzetta and Shortt were both successful fashion designers before going into interior design and worked for prestigious houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino. Dana Jacober also has a wealth of experience in the fashion industry. Their ability to apply their knowledge of fabrics, construction and design to inventively create items needed to accomplish day to day tasks enable them to create something that is not only elegant and beautiful but practical and efficient for the successful executive and professional.
