When it comes to the holidays, no matter what holiday you celebrate, family traditions are often the most cherished aspect of the season. Kids grow up, not necessarily with memories of what gifts they received in any given year, but with treasured recollections of customs their family made a precious part of each holiday. Here, we’ve come up with some fun ideas for creating some new traditions for your own family. What’s more beautiful than the soft glow of a twinkling Christmas tree? Capture that enchanting scene with a little evening campout. Nestle near the tree atop cozy pillows and blankets with your loved ones. Kids will absolutely delight in munching on holiday treats and sipping hot chocolate while listening to Christmas stories. Of course, it’s also a wonderfully romantic setting for you and your sweetheart to listen to Christmas carols while cuddling up.

AROUND TOWN ________________ Scottsdale Events to Enjoy in December

For each of the eight nights of Hanukkah, have every family member write down on a piece of paper one thing they are grateful for. Mix up the papers and have different family members read one aloud. Can everyone guess who said what? There’s always room for dessert when the offering is delicious Christmas cookies. This year, why not pay homage to beautiful Arizona with some saguaro-shaped cookies decorated with a frosted string of festive lights? What to do with all those cookies you’ve so lovingly created? Make a tray and deliver some to your local fire station, police station, or even a hungry nurses’ station with a handwritten note of appreciation. You just may find this is the favorite part of your holiday! Make Hanukkah a lively social event with an annual latke competition. Have the contestants bring their homemade wares to be sampled and assessed. Perhaps each contestant can use a “secret” ingredient such as shaved carrots or apples. How to choose the winner? Easy – let the kids be the judges!

Are you ready to "RIGHTSIZE"? For years, we’ve all heard of the housing concept of downsizing. Whether for financial reasons or because the kids have grown and moved into homes of their own, many homeowners make the decision to sell their property for a smaller, less expensive home. However, there is a new trend emerging in real estate: not just of moving into a smaller or less expensive home, but in choosing a property that fits a changing lifestyle. It’s been coined as “rightsizing.” Rightsizing has more to do about lifestyle, amenities and how homeowners would prefer to spend their time, than it does about buying “less.” In fact, many homeowners are rightsizing and buying a home in a similar price point to the one they’re selling. It’s not so much about buying down, but perhaps making a lateral move to a different type of lifestyle while keeping the same level of luxury appointments or finishes within their new property. HOW TO KNOW IF RIGHTSIZING IS RIGHT FOR YOU Do you find that your home requires more upkeep and maintenance than you’d like? Many find that moving to a smaller property, even a townhome or a condo, allows them more time to take on hobbies and other interests. The new ICON at Silverleaf offers luxurious, hassle-free living in its collection of 72 condominiums. Would you prefer to live in an area that offers restaurants, shopping, bike paths and parks within walking distance? The luxury high-rise communities near Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter allow residents to live in the heart of the action. Are you at a stage in your life where you can divide your time between properties in different locales? Maybe you’d like to winter in Scottsdale and summer in Newport. Have you considered trading your large, single-family property for smaller, multiple homes to help you achieve just that? Is your expansive home simply more than you need? Perhaps you love your country club community and wouldn’t consider leaving your friends. We’ve helped many residents sell their estate-sized property and buy a smaller home right in the same neighborhood – some just steps from the club! Is your present home equipped to keep pace with the changes in your health or mobility as you age? Take this into consideration as well when thinking about whether rightsizing makes sense for you. As with any real estate transaction, your success comes down to the professionals you choose to put in your corner. We’ve helped hundreds of North Scottsdale residents in the sale or purchase of their next home and we’d be honored to work with you too. Let’s talk about the market and what type of a lifestyle interests you! Contact us at AL 602.320.8415.

Guest Quarters

If your household is like many others this time of year, you will be entertaining out-of-town visitors in the weeks and months to come and you’ll want to make your home comfortable and inviting for their stay. Most houseguests want to feel that they are not imposing too much on their hosts. Ease their anxieties by outfitting their quarters with as many conveniences and niceties as necessary so that they have everything they could need at their fingertips. Not having to constantly ask their host for things makes for a better visit for your guests as well as for you. Start with a private area or room where guests can retreat to. In addition to the bed linens that dress the bed, supply your guests with other options in pillows, duvets or blankets. That way they can choose from among soft or firm and lightweight or heavyweight bedding to suit their preferences. One of the signs of a great host is your anticipation of their every need. In case they forgot to bring some items from home, have basic toiletries at the ready. A basket of mini sundries placed thoughtfully on the bathroom counter just might be a lifesaver!

both robes and matching slippers embroidered with a clever design such as “Hotel Smith.” It’s sure to be a conversation piece as guests can anticipate your comfy robes on each visit! If your space permits, a comfortable seating area will really allow your guests to relax and “cocoon” in their room. A supply of books on area sightseeing, history and urban legends can give your guests a dose of our community’s flavor. Many of our Arizona visitors aren’t aware of the need to stay hydrated, no matter what time of year. Bottles of water aren’t just a detail, but a necessity! Include too, some other refreshments for them to snack on. Some guests would feel uncomfortable foraging around your kitchen when hungry, so supply them with fruit, granola bars, maybe even a bit of chocolate! In fact, why not offer a basket of some of our locally made products, such as Goldwater’s salsas, Fairytale Brownies, Queen Creek Olive Mill olives, or LDV wine. No doubt, your guests will have fond memories of their stay for years to come!

When most of us travel, we make our best efforts to condense our packing. Often bulky robes and slippers, while a must at home, don’t make the cut! So be sure to provide both to your guests – they are sure to be grateful. A nice touch would be to have
