FROM THE LUCKYS I saw an advertisement for a product the other day, encouraging me to “live my best life!” Well I’m on board with that idea, I thought. Truly, who doesn’t want to live their best life? Then I started thinking, what do we really mean by that phrase? How would I define my best life? Is it similar to the one I’m living? Is it drastically different? How will I know when I’ve achieved it? It seems I’m not the only one contemplating this concept. When I Googled “living your best life,” that magical internet search engine gave me 3,740,000,000 results to scroll through! amenities and lifestyles. The community consists of more than 4,000 residential units with a broad mix of housing types. Varied community features give residents a wide range of activities. The Park at Grayhawk offers a multitude of recreational parks and Grayhawk Elementary school. The Retreat contains two world-class, 18-hole public golf courses, the Grayhawk clubhouse with superb casual dining, miles of trails for hiking, biking and jogging, and guard-gated neighborhoods.

DC RANCH DC Ranch is a methodically designed 4,400-acre master-planned community with four separate villages: Country Club, Desert Camp, Desert Parks and Silverleaf. The Country Club Village is a guard-gated community within DC Ranch, and features one of the Southwest's finest private membership clubs. The community includes luxury villas, single-family, and custom homes. Desert Camp Village offers neighborhood parks and trails linking the village to the entire DC Ranch community. Its community center, called Desert Camp, features a 25-yard swimming pool and tot pools, a full fitness center, two lighted tennis courts, a pickleball court and a basketball court. Desert Parks Village is a collection of single-family homes and luxury rentals and has tree-lined streets, parks, and a variety of homes. Architectural elements promote front-of-home living with front porches, and garages positioned to the back of some homes. The community center within Desert Parks Village, The Homestead, offers a playhouse community theater, an adventure playground, basketball courts and a demonstration kitchen.

TROON NORTH Troon North, an 1,800-acre master-planned community, enjoys a dynamic desert landscape – undulating geography, amongst huge granite boulders, lush desert arroyos, and stands of ancient saguaros. Residential subdivisions are designed around two public championship golf courses by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. The community park features tennis, basketball, ramadas, and a turfed recreational area for other outdoor activities. Property options include condominiums, townhomes, production homes, semi-custom homes, and custom estates. Custom lots are still available. All but a few subdivisions are gated, and most homes have mountain and/or city-light views.

TROON VILLAGE Troon Village is a 1,400-acre residential master-planned golf community surrounding stately Troon Mountain. Its higher elevation provides cooler temperatures, cleaner air, and opportunities for views of the Valley floor. Troon is located in arguably the most beautiful section of the Sonoran Desert. Troon Village has a wonderful assortment of residential choices from townhomes to semi-custom and custom spec homes, as well as residential home sites. Troon Country Club, one of Arizona’s top-rated golf clubs, features a course designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, and boasts a luxurious 50,000-square-foot clubhouse that has undergone a recent $7.5 million expansion and renovation.

ESTANCIA Estancia is an exclusive and upscale golf course community nestled north of iconic Pinnacle Peak. With only 223 home sites and 39 villas within the 640-acre community, residents enjoy a private, low-density experience. The community itself has been patterned after a Tuscan, Old-World style and design guidelines ensure that each custom home will blend and contour to the site. Homes range in size from 3,286 to over 14,000 square feet, on .5 to 2.3 acres. The European-style, 32,000-square-foot clubhouse has a private dining area, tennis courts, a swimming pool with a lap lane and a fitness room. Golf magazine has named Estancia among the “100 Greatest Courses in the World,“ and members enjoy the club's unique active caddy program.

WHY WE LOVE...

Troon North

“We love it at Troon North. The views are spectacular. Everyone takes great care of their property and its “curb appeal.” The golf course is immaculately maintained. People are very friendly and walk their dogs without ever worrying about a speeding car. Troon North is close enough to dining and shopping, but offers the seclusion we like. The Dynamite Grill at the clubhouse has entertainment on occasion and serves delicious food with a friendly staff that treats you like family. We’d stack their Dynamite Burger up against any burger in the USA! We made the right choice in working with The Luckys and finding this little slice of heaven in the desert.” — JIM AND TERRY O'DEA

Mirabel residents enjoy the beauty and pure air of the desert set against panoramic views of majestic mountains, glowing sunsets and the sparkling lights of the Valley. The Tom Fazio-designed golf course offers challenging golf and spectacular views from every hole. The community is home to 315 custom home sites ranging in size from 2/3 of an acre to over two acres. In addition to custom homes, Mirabel includes El Corazon – 35 beautifully designed singlefamily homes in the heart of the community.

WHISPER ROCK Whisper Rock Estates is an exclusive guard-gated golf community on 850 acres which offers large custom home sites ranging from one to five acres. Home sites have lush desert vegetation and superb 360-degree distant views of the McDowells, Pinnacle Peak, Black Mountain, and Tonto National Forest. The exclusive Whisper Rock Golf Club strives to provide players with the finest golf experience possible. Whisper Rock’s membership is limited to 580 golf memberships for the 36-hole facility and is by invitation only. The average club handicap is in the single-digits. Whisper Rock’s club is focused on golf rather than other amenities. Only a few homes have a view of the golf course. The Whisper Rock homeowners enjoy amenities including walking paths, a library, a three-acre park, fitness center, 24-hour guard-gated access, and concierge services including dry cleaning and grocery arrangements.

DESERT HIGHLANDS Desert Highlands is an 850-acre residential golf community prominently located on the south slope of Pinnacle Peak. The 18-hole, par-72 golf course was thoughtfully designed by Jack Nicklaus. Additionally, the community offers a unique Gary Panks-designed 18-hole putting course. Members enjoy more than just fine golf in a beautiful lush Sonoran Desert setting. An awardwinning clubhouse, renovated in 2013, a 7,000-square-foot fitness center and walking trails throughout the community offer rest and recreation. Arizona Sonoran Desert

She looked out of her window. How blue the sky. The mountain peaks stood up like dark spears. Patches of snow shone in the sunlight, running down to the edge of the vast green belt of forest land...Arizona! There was no place in the world so full of romance and beauty, and the natural things that stirred the soul. ~ ZANE GREY, THE WATER HOLE, 1928

THE MAGIC of Arizona’s legendary allure begins with the land, and what a diverse land it is! From forests and desert, to grasslands and woodlands, Arizona offers panoramic beauty and spellbinding scenes nearly defying description, from every corner of the state. As the third most bio-diverse state in the country, Arizona is unique in that there are six distinct biomes (geographical areas that have a specific climate, plant life and animals) featuring hundreds of native species of flora and fauna – some found nowhere else in the world. From the tundra biome at the top of Mt. Humphreys in Flagstaff, down to the desert scrub biome near Yuma, the beauty of our scenic vistas and the animals that thrive in our state have long been the subjects of awardwinning photographers from across the globe. Photographers have been snapping Arizona’s notorious grandeur since the invention of the camera. Capturing an image, truly freezing a moment into timelessness, exposes not only the bare truth of the scene but it also has the ability to convey a feeling, evoke emotions and even proffer to us a sense of our place in this world. Perhaps that’s why images of Arizona continue to fascinate us.

With a PhD in wildlife management and a lifelong nature lover, Bruce Taubert began photographing Arizona wildlife over 30 years ago. “Many of the animals I capture on film would never be seen by the average person. I want my photography to be the conduit that brings awareness and appreciation of the animals that make the Sonoran Desert their home. By showing the beauty and sharing the qualities of these creatures in photographs, I hope to motivate the public to better understand and even cherish our wildlife,” he says. Taubert’s work has been published in magazines such as Arizona Highways, Game & Fish, Conservation International, Science and others. He’s authored two instructional manuals geared for both budding and

macro

photography,

accomplished photographers, and he serves as an instructor for photography seminars and workshops.

When asked just what makes Arizona so photogenic, Taubert explains that the raw, natural beauty and

known as

abundance of verdant plant life combine to create a distinct aesthetic found nowhere else in the world. “Arizona is so unique. The opposite of what some people associate with a desert – that of dry, barren landscapes of shifting sands – the Sonoran Desert is the most diverse in the world. The combination of so many vertical structures such as towering saguaros, mesquite trees and mountains; the contrasting warm colors of the desert and the vast, openness of the landscape allows for stunning photography. “Sometimes I feel that people are afraid of the desert,” he continues. “With thoughts of rattlesnakes, scorpions, prickly cacti and howling coyotes, there can be a misunderstanding about how lush and teeming with beautiful life the desert actually is. Because so many animals in the desert are nocturnal,

~LE ARN FROM THE PRO~ Bruce Taubert shares his tips and strategies for taking great photographs 1. Become comfortable with your camera equipment. Your camera can always take a photograph, but you make the great photographs by knowing how to use it. Most modern cameras are rather complicated pieces of equipment. Make sure you know how to set the white balance, focusing points, image quality, exposure compensation, and the like. You can learn about your camera’s advanced operations from the user’s manual, the internet, or from an instructor. 2. Research your subject. I am a biologist who knows a lot about animals, but I still spend more time investigating the habits of my subjects than I do in taking their images. The more you know about your subject, the better able you are to get up-close and personal with them. 3. Scout. Even before you shoot anything, go to the photo location to determine the quality of the light, best angles to shoot, wildlife movement patterns, and anything else that will give you the best possible opportunity to take a great image. On the day of the shoot, plan to get there early and stay late. Although most animals have predictable movement patterns, you’ll

find that the longer you stay, your chances of taking a rewarding image increase. 4. Be there for the right light. The great photographers search for the best light and think as much about lighting as they think about their subjects. For the most part, early morning or late afternoon provides the best light – but always be prepared to capture a great image any time of the day or night. I love photographing in the dark of night when the light is mine to make. 5. Use the internet. I normally read every photography book I can get my hands on, but I also spend considerable time on the internet. The internet allows me access to photographers that will never write a book but will spend considerable time sharing their knowledge online. Pick their virtual brains but be sure to separate the wheat from the shaft. 6. Join a photo club. Looking at other photographers’ images and discussing photography will help you improve. Many photo clubs have field trips, training classes, photo competitions, and numerous social events. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of having other photographers help and mentor you.

7. Take advantage of special opportunities. When you have the chance for a great image, take it. Never wait for tomorrow! I spent years searching for a den of kit foxes. When I finally found one, I spent every spare minute I could find to be there and take their photos. I knew I may never find another, so I struck while the iron was hot. 8. Practice makes perfect. The more you use your camera, the better photographer you will be. My favorite reading material on an airplane is the camera manual. I photograph my grandchildren, friends’ dogs, birds at the local pond, etc. Remember how much time and effort you put into learning how to drive a car? Now driving your car is second nature. That is what using your camera should become. 9. Be patient. Wildlife and landscapes can be unpredictable. The weather is almost never right, the sun is too high, the animal is in the shade, there is some vegetation in the way, or whatever. There are always problems that get in the way of taking great photographs. If you are patient, the weather will get better, the animal will move into the sun, and you will take a photograph to remember!

Wildlife is most active in the early morning and at night. “When I set out to photograph a particular animal, I’ll research that animal’s behavior to determine the best time and place to find it,” he says. Taubert takes a lot of his wildlife images in the dark of night – precisely when most of us would never take the opportunity to observe these desert creatures.

Arizona's raw,

natural beauty and abundance of verdant plant and animal life combine to create a distinct aesthetic found nowhere else in the world

Taubert’s latest photographic passion is really, shall we say, in the details. Macro photography, otherwise known as extreme close-up photography, shows the size of the subject much greater than life-sized. From the elaborate and intricate patterns on a moth’s wing, to the mind-blowing detail of a fly’s multi-lensed eyes, macro photography offers viewers a glimpse of Mother Nature's phenomena and curiosities we wouldn’t otherwise be privy to. “I find the details of a flower, or the complexities of a bee’s eyes absolutely fascinating,” Taubert enthuses. “Just think, without seeing these wonders of nature in photographs, there is so much of this tiny world that we’ll never be able to appreciate because we can’t see it.” For macro photography enthusiasts, Arizona happens to be one of the best places in North America to shoot. With the sheer number of insects and invertebrates that inhabit the state, and a warm climate that allows photographers to find their subjects year-round, the desert southwest is teeming with life and photographic opportunities. While residents and visitors to Arizona may have the opportunity to appreciate her visual gifts firsthand, the breathtaking images captured on film reveal the richness and vibrancy of life here to any viewer fortunate enough to visually drink in all that is Arizona.

PINNACLE PEAK is located approximately 25 miles northeast of downtown Phoenix, 20 miles north of downtown Scottsdale and 13 miles southeast of Cave Creek and Carefree. Rising out of the Sonoran Desert floor to an elevation of 3,170 feet, Pinnacle Peak’s distinctive shape is recognizable from more than 25 miles away. Situated in the Sonoran Uplands at the north end of the McDowell Mountains and enriched by slightly cooler temperatures, springs, and short-lived water sources from rain and rapidly flowing washes, Pinnacle Peak is the centerpiece of a rugged desert landscape. Pinnacle Peak and the neighboring foothills are dotted with saguaro, palo verde, mesquite and cholla. The environment is harsh yet fertile and has provided habitats for many species of Sonoran wildlife since long before the arrival of man and has supported human habitation for thousands of years.

This excerpt from the book, Images of America: Pinnacle Peak, authored by Les Conklin and the Greater Pinnacle Peak Association and published by Arcadia Publishing, is reprinted with permission.

It is 1983. Passengers are peering through their bus windows at Pinnacle Peak, one of central Arizona's most recognizable landmarks. The excited tourists are on their way to a famous Pinnacle Peak cowboy restaurant. The driver draws the passengers' attention to two men dressed in cowboy garb standing by the side of the quiet, lonely road. The men are waving for help. The driver pulls over and opens the door. The "cowboys," with six-shooters drawn and bandanas covering their faces, board the bus and shout, "This is a holdup!"

In the Arizona desert, no development can occur without an adequate supply of water. Three large-scale water-related projects contributed to the early development of Pinnacle Peak and neighboring areas. The Arizona Canal fostered the growth of the tiny farming community of Scottsdale, then a distant 20 miles south of Pinnacle Peak. Later, the construction of Bartlett and Horseshoe Dams created boom times for the tiny mining community of Cave Creek, approximately 13 miles northwest of Pinnacle Peak. Interesting personalities have helped to create and build the foundation for today's Pinnacle Peak community. Edwin Orpheus

The U.S. Army established Camp McDowell (later renamed Fort McDowell) to protect settlers from combative Indians in the surrounding mountains. Located at the confluence of the Verde and Salt Rivers, the installation commanded a number of the more important trails that served the Apache of central Arizona. The fort became an embarkation point for many military expeditions against the Apache. (Courtesy of the Arizona Historical Association.)

Brown established a cattle ranch that grew to 44,000 acres. Kenyon Turner "K.T." Palmer built a homestead on the western flank of Pinnacle Peak in 1933. Decades later, after failing to find water in the Pinnacle Peak area, Palmer developed Arizona's first planned community, Carefree. Captivated by its beauty, artists settled near Pinnacle Peak. Adventurer and trader Don Pablo opened a western curio and antiques store in the remote desert

surrounds it. This book will focus on its untold story. Archeologists believe that archaic hunter-gatherers roamed the area from as early as 5000 B.C. until A.D. 600. Upland Hohokam resided in the region until approximately A.D. 1200. In 1988, Pinnacle Peak Village, a Hohokam settlement within two miles of Pinnacle Peak, was excavated and photographed. In 1865, the U.S. Army established Camp McDowell (later renamed Fort McDowell) approximately 20 miles from Pinnacle Peak. The camp's purpose was to provide protection for miners, ranchers and settlers in central Arizona from various groups of

As the Apache became less menacing, prospectors followed Stoneman Road into unexplored land, including the Pinnacle Peak area and McDowell Mountains. Mines were opened in the McDowell Mountains. Kenyon Turner Palmer, who homesteaded near Pinnacle Peak beginning in 1933, found long-forgotten claim notices in Prince Albert tobacco tins – evidence of previous prospecting activity. This photograph from the 1880s is of a prospector known to Cave Creek residents as “Old Rackensack.” (Courtesy of the Cave Creek Museum.)

In 1969, Jerry and Florence Nelson "struck it wet" when they drilled into a large aquifer not far from Pinnacle Peak. And the rush was on in more ways than one. As the 1960s gave way to the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, houses and golf courses began to replace vacant ranch land, residents continued to work to protect the natural environment, and the Pinnacle Peak area was annexed into the city of Scottsdale. Local organizations sprang up to protect the environment and encourage sensitive planning. As new master-planned communities were considered, members reviewed plans and disseminated information to property owners about development and preservation efforts. The master-planned communities approved during this period included Pinnacle Peak Plaza, Pinnacle Peak Country Club and its nine subdivisions, Troon Village, Troon North, Desert Highlands, Estancia, Legend Trails, Grayhawk, Terravita, and Winfield.

In the 1800s, American settlers began using the Pinnacle Peak area for ranching and some prospecting. In 1916, Edwin Orpheus Brown, a Scottsdale businessman, established a ranch within sight of Pinnacle Peak. The ranch, DC Ranch, grew to 44,000 acres. His son Edwin Elsworth Brown ran a heard of 4,000 cattle in the area. (Courtesy of the Scottsdale Historical Society.)

Late in the 1950s, colorful entrepreneurs opened cowboy venues in the Pinnacle Peak area, forerunners of Rawhide, Arizona's most popular attraction after the Grand Canyon. In the 1960s, after Scottsdale Road was paved, area residents installed plant identification signs along its northern reaches to protect the desert they cherished. A retired executive opened a golf course that used sand for greens. Cattle dramatically outnumbered residents.

Protected by two pet timber wolves, Don Pablo lived in a one-room, dirt-floored shack. He was surrounded by hogans filled with Indian jewelry, guns, pottery, cowboy paraphernalia, teapots, and other wonders. Outside were a gas pump and collections of used bicycles and harnesses. After his death, thousands of people attended two auctions of his collections, which generated more than $100,000 in sales. (Courtesy of Days and Ways.)

In July 1995, the burgeoning community and its scenic landscape narrowly escaped disaster when a bolt of lightning struck the desert less than two miles from Pinnacle Peak. The mountain itself was spared, but the lightning strike caused the largest fire ever experienced in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The fire burned 23,000 acres east and southeast of Pinnacle Peak. For many years, Pinnacle Peak was a secret destination for local equestrians, hikers, and rock climbers. In the 1970s, local residents began suggesting that a park should be created in the area. As growth continued to surge northward, those calls Until the 1950s, members of the Brown family and other cowboys drove DC Ranch beef cattle to market in Phoenix. Following dirt tracks across a vast open desert, it took two days to herd the cattle from Brown’s Ranch to market. increased, and in 2001 after much public input and discussion, the City of Scottsdale opened Pinnacle Peak Park. Most visitors to Pinnacle Peak Park enjoy the park's welldeveloped hiking trail. Many of the plant species and rugged desert landforms that the Hohokam observed can be seen and enjoyed from the trail. The 1.75-mile trail has a very smooth tread that is enjoyed by both equestrians and hikers. Experienced rock-

longer needed to haul water or drive five or more miles to make a telephone call. A new post office brought mail service to the area. A general store and then retail centers made it unnecessary to drive long distances for shopping. The road construction and installation of water lines and other infrastructure brought by development also created new challenges for residents. Gun owners who enjoyed hunting and target practice in the open desert were angered by new regulations designed to protect residents and tourists. With no newspapers or magazines serving the area, Pinnacle Peak residents created their own publication to provide information about development projects, local activities, Sonoran plants and animals, and the ever-increasing number of stores and services. Government leaders worked to enhance communication and understanding between "downtown" Scottsdale and the stillremote northern neighborhoods. With the active participation of area residents and developers, ordinances designed to protect

Bobcats, desert tortoises, coyotes, chuckwallas, rattlesnakes, saguaro, cholla, and ocotillo are just a few of the plant and animal species found in the park and neighboring areas. Like the eager tourists described in the opening paragraph, most people first come to Pinnacle Peak as visitors. Since the days of the prehistoric hunter-gatherers, the irresistible draw of the land and its wildlife has caused many to call Pinnacle Peak home. The beauty of the area led Scottsdale and its residents to create Pinnacle Peak Park and motivates us to work diligently to preserve the natural environment and heritage of this remarkable place.

THE HARMONIOUS BLEND THAT BREATHES LIFE INTO OUTDOOR SPACES

With as many gorgeous, sun-filled days as we find ourselves with in the Valley, it’s no wonder that homeowners’ outdoor spaces are garnering as much thought and attention as the interiors of the home. From a visually pleasing curbside view, to multiple specialty spaces for relaxing and entertaining, the work of a talented landscape architect is as crucial to a project as the plan and design of the home itself. Russell Greey, Landscape Architect and Design Principal with Greey | Pickett in Scottsdale describes the role of his design in any residential or commercial project. “Our mission is to make the outdoor spaces seamless with the architecture of the home. The landscape architect is just one leg of the theoretical three-legged stool in design. The building architect, the interior designer and the landscape architect all collaborate to create a harmonious and holistic aesthetic,” he says. With a successful career spanning over 30 years, and a reputation for creating timeless environments that are both detailed and sustainable, Greey’s experience and expertise are constantly called upon by industry partners and homeowners themselves. “The evolution from a blank piece of paper to a successful project always gives me great fulfillment. We’re 100% in it; delivering smart, nuanced, logical and artistic design concepts and solutions that exceed everyone’s expectations,” he beams. Greey approaches any project – no matter the size or style – by gathering insight from the clients, and inspiration from nature. Whether he’s working on a lush Mediterranean-style garden, or a sleek and airy contemporary space, Greey’s design choices always complement the architecture of the home and with deference to the site and land. “A lot of the projects I’m working on recently are redoing heavy Tuscan or adobe-style spaces. From Scottsdale, to Arcadia, to Paradise Valley, I’m seeing modern, contemporary, French country and even Santa Barbara as the most popular styles homeowners are asking for,” explains Greey. regularly,” notes Greey. “While adding a guest addition to the home, the front auto court and courtyard were removed. I took advantage of this newly renovated front entry space to utilize it for entertaining,” he adds. In striving to meet the desires of the homeowner, Greey planned several different areas around the home that would encourage congregating and socializing: An intimate fire pit with spacious seating in the front, a private dining area off of the kitchen, a seamless indoor-outdoor flow from the home into the covered outdoor living room, and an expansive banco and oversized fire pit on the far side of the backyard pool to take advantage of the stunning golf course and mountain views. When embarking upon a design project, Greey’s first step is to meet with the client and gain a full understanding of what the client is looking for. “I start with asking how they are going to use the house, then I work with their wish list of how they want to live,” he says. Understanding the intricacies of the site are just as important. “I’m considering any sloping and

irrigation. My design will be influenced by the topography, the views, and how the outdoor ‘rooms’ will cohesively meld into the footprint of the home,” he continues. A truly great landscape design mixes proportion, lines-of-sight and a carefully selected collection of elements that combine to create a space that is at once pleasing to the eyes while instantly delivering a soothing ambiance. Designed with skill, these spaces lift spirits and enhance moods. “My gift to the project is that you can’t necessarily put your finger on why you love it – you just know that you do!” smiles Greey. The Sonoran Desert in and around Scottsdale is brimming with hundreds of species of native animals. Burrowing owls are so named because they live underground in burrows made by ground squirrels and prairie dogs – a strategy also used by rattlesnakes. When alarmed, the owl hides in its burrow and makes hissing and rattling sounds similar to that of a rattlesnake. Unlike other owls, burrowing owls are active during the day and have longer legs to better sprint after their prey. There is a huge population of these animals in the agricultural areas of the Southwest Valley, where they dig their nests in the soft soils of the water delivery canals. The image of this juvenile was captured there by local wildlife photographer Bruce Taubert.
