Katen honored as festival grand marshal NEWMAN - Ed Katen has been cop and coach, mayor and school board member in his more than three decades in Newman. The long-time resident was recently honored for his years of service to the community - in both official roles and as a volunteer - by the Newman Fall Festival Committee, which named Katen its 2014 grand marshal. Fall Festival committee member Toni Butero said Katen’s broad range of volunteerism and community involvement exemplifies the traits sought in a grand marshal. “He has given his time and support to the betterment of this community in many, many ways for over 30 years,” Butero commented. Katen, who is currently Newman’s mayor, joins a long list of distinguished community members who have been afforded that honor through the years in recognition of their contributions. “It is beyond an honor,” Katen commented. “There are other people out there who quite easily could be grand marshal. I was stunned when I was asked.” Katen’s wide-ranging

community involvement reflects a variety of interests which stretch back to his earliest years in Newman. Katen, who grew up in Dos Palos, came to the community in 1979 when he was hired as a police officer, and worked with then-Police Chief Tom Engstrom in the early 1980s to rejuvenate the youth baseball and softball program. He recalls working with Engstrom on everything from lining the fields and working the snack bar to coaching teams in order to help build the program. Later, Katen coached football at Orestimba for six years. To this day, Katen said, some of the youth he worked with call him “coach.” He devoted his professional life to serving on the Newman Police Department and working toward its betterment. The early days were not always easy, Katen said, and he was unsure about staying in Newman. “Tom encouraged me to stay, saying that things would get better and they did. The public trust in the P.D. changed over the years. I felt that we had a

pretty good police department.” Katen was promoted through the ranks, and served as acting police chief on several occasions. He retired as a lieutenant in 2005. By that time, his community involvement had expanded elsewhere. He was still on the police force when public office beckoned. Katen ran for school board, and served for four years. After retiring from the police department, Katen successfully ran for City Council in 2006 and became mayor two years later. Running for public office, Katen said, reflected his philosophy that one should take positive action rather than complaining but not getting involved. “There were some issues, being a former city employee, that I was aware of. Again, rather than sit on the sidelines and complain I decided I wanted to make a difference,” he recalled. “There were some issues that I felt needed to be resolved. They were resolved, and we have moved forward.” Katen has continued to be involved as a commu-

Scavenger hunt offers $500 prize What do a recreated version of the Beatles’ Abbey Road photo, a group of people posing by Newman’s historic cannon and a memento from a past Fall Festival have in common? All are among the items teams are required to compile in the Fall Festival’s first-ever scavenger hunt, which is providing teams plenty of incentive to meet the unusual requirements by offering a grand prize of $500. Teams have a checklist of 17 tasks to complete or items to collect. Among the requirements are team photos with a classic car, with a city official, playing on a playground, recreating the Abbey Road scene, spelling out a word with their bodies and posing as statues in front of the Newman Museum. As if that weren’t enough, teams are also asked to acquire a 2014 Fall Fes-

tival program autographed by a member of the Miss Newman Court and a member of the Fall Festival Committee, a stub from any ticketed event during Fall Festival week and a memento from a past festival. Teams that achieve all 100 points possible will be entered into the drawing for the grand prize. In the event that nobody qualifies for the grand prize, first-, second- and third-place prizes totaling $250 will be awarded. The contest started Aug. 18. Entry forms and complete rules are available at Mattos Newspapers. Entries must be submitted to the Fall Festival booth in Pioneer Park no later than 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30. The scavenger hunt awards will be presented at 9 p.m. Sunday during the performance of Elvis artist Rob Ely.

Bailey’s Legacy Fun Run The fifth annual Bailey’s Legacy Fun Run will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of the Newman Fall Festival. One-mile and 5K races are held during the charity fun run. The one-mile race begins at 8 a.m., with the 5K following at 8:15. Miss Newman

Cristina Freitas

B

eing a Newman resident means being able to fully envelope myself in the community. It means being able to know other residents on a first-name basis and be able to say hello when I see them in town. Newman is my home and it is filled with character and history. With a town so small it can feel claustrophobic at times because everybody knows everybody, but I like that. I am so grateful that at every stop in town I can recall a memory I made there with family and friends. I am proud that when a little kid sees me they remember I read to them for a read-in at Hunt Elementary or that my old teachers still say hi to me and ask how I am doing.

I thank this town for supplying me with such an enriched childhood of memories and lessons. I think the community for opening themselves up to my family when we first moved here. These are the reasons why I want to represent Newman. I feel I can represent our town in a way no one else can. I want to be an example to young girls everywhere and this town as well. With all the good in our town, there is always need for improvement, and I would like to help lead us into a new level of change. As a community, we need to support one another. What better way to show support then to come together and fight against cancer? That is why I propose we begin Newman’s very own Relay for Life. I fell in love

with this charity when I was just a wee freshman who did not have a clue on what being charitable was except for when it came to volunteering my time at festas. This event caught my eye and I became extremely passionate on helping in any way I could. If I became Miss Newman 2014, I would dedicate my time to improving Newman to the best of my ability in hope of repaying the town and community for all it has done for me. I would also like to thank the Pedrazzi Company for all their support as well as my family, friends, and finally God, for loving me and molding me into the person I am today.

N

ewman is often seen by outsiders to be a stereotypical little farm town. But to those who are fortunate enough to call this small town home, we know different. There’s nowhere else we would rather be. I am proud to say that I am a direct product of Newman. My grandparents and even my great-grandparents have lived here for many years. My parents grew up here, graduated from Orestimba and, after college, decided to stay here to raise our family. Because of this, there’s a sense of familiarity that seems to be ever-present and that comforts me. The Miss Newman Pageant has been something that I’ve looked forward to ever since I took part in the Little Miss Newman Contest back in kindergarten. Having always been a “girly girl,” the crown was the major prize. However, now that I’m older, the ability to represent and serve our community is of great interest to me. Although we have a close-knit community, there are so many other things to learn about. The processes, politics, service op-

portunities, and the people I have yet to meet appeal to me. I would love to get the chance to be involved and make a difference. Throughout my life, my parents encouraged me to not always think about myself, but to also think about others. I’d like to think my awareness of the needs of others has improved greatly over the years. So, if given the chance, the areas I would focus on would be homelessness and hunger. Having applied for the Gallo Early Start Leadership Camp, I had to think of a conceivable community service project. My plan was to have periodic clothing and food drives and stockpile these necessities so that those in need would have the resources to get back on their feet. Our homeless, poverty-stricken population seems to be growing, and it would be great to help make improvements to the situation. As my high school career comes to a close, I’m trying to take advantage of every opportunity that I can to benefit myself and my future. Having had my future planned out since I was little, the Miss Newman Pageant is an opportunity to help

me find out who I am as a person. I see this pageant as a great opportunity to get to know more people, strengthen my public speaking skills and gain a little bit of confidence all while making a difference and having fun. I would like to thank my pageant sponsors, my grandmother, Ida Mendonca, owner of Splash & Dash Car Wash, and my cousin, Shaun Felber, owner of Felber Insurance. I wouldn’t have been able to be up here if not for them. I would also like to thank my mom, dad and siblings. They always support me in everything I do, whether it’s coming to my games, helping me with school work or just giving me a hug. This pageant has been no exception. I would also like to thank the pageant directors Janelle Cardoso and Crickett Brinkman for being so helpful and encouraging throughout this whole process. Being chosen to represent our community would be a great honor and one that I would treasure forever.

Meet the Contestants:

Miss Newman

Monica Joseph

M

y name is Monica Joseph. I am 17 years old and the daughter of Ramona and Michael Joseph. I currently attend Orestimba High School as a senior. Throughout high school I have been a diligent student, enthusiastic about FFA and dedicated to every goal I set. I would like to express my appreciation to my sponsors, R-SAFE Specialty and Jose Rodriguez with Allison James Estate and Homes. Thank you so much for supporting me during the pageant process. I would also like to thank my parents, pageant directors Crickett Brinkman and Janelle Cardoso and pageant assistants Sage and Harley Brinkman for teaching me to be an elegant young woman. In 1999 I moved to Newman not

knowing all the wonderful opportunities it has to offer. Living in a small peaceful community, I have observed uncrowded schools, a low crime rate and the chance for people to create their own business in a supportive neighborhood. I am qualified to represent Newman because I am approachable, a great listener, organized and an excellent communicator. Using my talents wisely, I have volunteered my time at Hurd Barrington Elementary School assisting with the after-school program. I have also volunteered at a few Comforting Kids events such as the car show serving meals and waitressing at the annual dinner and auction. Volunteering my time in Newman has taught me the little things really do matter.

As Miss Newman I will represent our town at all chamber of commerce meetings and involve myself in community events. I hope to motivate others to join the community and participate in learning experiences like I have. There are only so many goals, ideas and plans I hope to accomplish throughout the year. My goal is to be a role model to all ages. I want to motivate others to work hard to have a successful future. My vision is to decrease the number of unemployed by allowing more businesses to open in Newman. This will make work close to home and accessible to the community. Thank you.

Jessica Negrete

E

very little girl has dreamed about being a princess, the president of the United States or maybe even a mermaid. As a little girl, I remember watching the Fall Festival parade with my family and instantly knowing that I wanted to be a part of these special events in Newman. I wanted to feel like I mattered in my town. My dream is not necessarily to be Miss Newman, but it is a challenge to prove to myself that I am capable of doing anything and everything I put my heart into. Growing up in Newman has brought me very great memories through the years. There is no doubt that you will make lifetime friends here in Newman. Truth is, more than half of us will stay here and whose who move will probably come back. You cannot help but fall in love with the friendly vibes of Newman or grow attached to all the outgoing people you meet. Those are a few reasons why I

want to make a difference in Newman. I want to see it stay full of life and energy so one day my greatgreat-great-grandchildren can play in the park like I used to. I strongly encourage more job openings for unemployed residents of Newman. It would be helpful to open up more local businesses to support our community and attract more people. I also believe that if we provided more entertainment centers in Newman, vandalism and teen pregnancy would decrease within our community. One of my main concerns about Newman is the drought that is occurring all over the world. Since Newman is surrounded by agriculture I suggest that we help preserve our water so we prevent any further affects by this drought. We can all make a change by taking shorter showers and not watering our plants and grass as often. Being raised out in the country I share a love for the outdoors

and enjoy spending time outside, whether it is bike-riding or just simply sitting back and reading a book. My true passion is doing makeup, and I hope to one day become a well-known makeup artist. The one thing that everyone most likely knows about me is that I absolutely adore cats, throughout my whole life I have probably owned 30 cats all together. Cats and pizza are my guilty pleasure. I am proud to say that I have received the Scholastic Achievement Award in honor of honor roll multiple times, earned my Greenhand and Chapter degrees from FFA and have been an honors student since freshman year of high school. I would like to thank my sponsors, Pizza Plus and B&G Auto Parts, for making this possible and most importantly my parents for helping me and supporting my goals.

Meet the Contestants:

Miss Newman

Violet Hickman

1

0,576: The number of residents in Newman, California. 864: The number of students at Orestimba High School. Six: The number of contestants in the 2014-15 Miss Newman Pageant. One: The number these things have in common, and that’s me. My name is Violet Hickman and I am the daughter of Sylvia PerezHickman and Gordon Hickman. I have lived in Newman for 17 years. Born and raised here in the Central Valley, I have a heart for this town and all that it includes. I love that our community is agriculture-based, and that I can always count on my peers in time of need. I spent four years as a member of Crows Landing 4-H. Being involved in 4-H taught me the importance of service, and I have continued to grow in my service with the help of the Interact and Rotary clubs. My leadership skills have also been sharpened by the

Future Farmers of America (FFA) and Student Council, both of which I participate in at Orestimba High School. First and foremost, I would like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He obviously placed me in a loving family and knew that we were meant to stay in Newman. I appreciate and thank my parents for all that they have done for me. They continue to support me, even when I bring forth many challenges. Thank you, J Styles and Lucy’s Nails, for sponsoring me. Without you, I would not have been able to participate in the Miss Newman Pageant. Lastly, I would like to thank Janelle Cardoso and pageant coordinator Crickett Brinkman. Without volunteers like Crickett, we six girls would not have the chance to participate in a pageant that gives so much back to the community. The Miss Newman Pageant has

taught me that beauty is not what matters. I am sure it helps, but achievements are not based on outward appearances. Working hard and being gracious benefits everyone, and I have learned this because of my experience in this pageant. Becoming Miss Newman would give me the opportunity to give back to the town that has given so much to me in the way of opportunities to participate in clubs, sports and organizations. The emotional support I have received from various adults like neighbors, friends, generations of family members, teachers and coaches in this town cannot be compared too. I want the little girls growing up in Newman to see us and say, “Wow, I want to be Miss Newman,” just like we did. Thank you.

Raven Ramirez

A

big sister is someone who you look up to for guidance and support. I want to be Miss Newman because I would like to be seen as an older sister to the youth in my community. Being given the chance to be on the Miss Newman court, I look forward to being more involved with community projects. Although I have met many people in my small town, being on the

court would allow me to mingle with a larger variety of people, and allow me to expand my knowledge outside of Orestimba. I love the small town feel of Newman, and how it feels like the cows over-populate the people. I would not want to change anything and lose that small town feeling that Newman portrays. Throughout my 17 years of life, I could not have been so grateful to live in a place as friendly and cozy

as Newman. I would like to thank West Side Pallet Co. for sponsoring me this year. Thank you, Ms. Caroline, for always supporting the Orestimba cheer squad. Also a special thanks to my friends and family for all the love and support, in addition to the community for allowing me the chance of becoming Miss Newman.

The Miss Newman Pageant will be held at the West Side Theatre on Thursday, Aug. 28 starting at 7:30 p.m. following the Little Mr. and Miss Newman Pageant.
