2019 OUR LADY OF MIRACLES CELEBRATION | 3

THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2019

Ponceano honored to serve as OLM president GUSTINE - As a child growing up on the Azores island of Terceira, Domingos Ponceano had heard accounts of a huge, deeply moving Portuguese celebration of faith and traditions in California’s Central Valley. Ponceano today stands at the head of the organizing committee as president for the 2019 Our Lady of Miracles Celebration, which will welcome thousands of visitors to Gustine for a big weekend of festivities Sept. 7-8. “It was an honor. I wasn’t expecting it, but for Our Lady it is worth it,” Ponceano said of the commitment and responsibility that go hand-in-hand with serving as president. “I accepted, and I will do my best.” Ponceano came to the United States from Terceira at 15 years of age. Long before he arrived, he knew of the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration.

“It was very well known there. People always talked about Gustine and the big Celebration,” Ponceano told Mattos Newspapers. “When I came over here, we had to go to San Miguel to get papers signed. I met with the counsel, and when he saw the address (of Ponceano’s destination) he said that we were going to a famous place and talked about the big Celebration.” Ponceano lived in Santa Nella for a few months and then Los Banos for eight years before moving to Gustine in 1987. He has worked on dairies and in construction, and since the early 1990s has owned a janitorial service. Along the way, he also became involved in the OLM Celebration. “Some friends who were part of it, who were directors, invited me and I started helping. I have been a director for the past 10 years. I have been doing

my part to help however I can, and then was asked to be president,” Ponceano explained. The Celebration honors both faith and culture, he reflected, bringing together people from all the Azores islands to share common bonds. Thousands of visitors converge on Gustine from both near and far each September in a tradition that for many families spans generations. “People come to meet here once a year. It is almost like a reunion,” Ponceano said. Faith is the bedrock of the Celebration, he added, and the devotion to Our Lady is reflected through the novenas, candlelight procession and vigil. The deep faith and unwavering devotion is reflected as Ponceano and others make their rounds

A Message from the President I am honored to serve as president of the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration and to help carry on the traditions of our faith and Portuguese heritage, especially Our Lady of Miracles. Together with the entire OLM Committee, I would like to invite all of you to participate in the many festivities that we have planned for this year. Our sincerest thanks are extended to each of the many generous donors who

have contributed so much to make this Celebration possible. Your faith and devotion to Our Lady has inspired us and enriched our lives. In addition, I would like to thank all of those who have volunteered to help in any way with the Celebration. Your love, support and dedication mean so much. May Our Lady of Miracles continue to bless each and every one of you and your families.

– Domingos Ponceano Ponceano, President

(Even in difficult times) they always save a little for Our Lady.” Each president brings their own unique touch to the Celebration. Ponceano’s theme for the Sept. 7 bodo de leite, for example, is “Influential Women in the Bible.” Fatima Silveira and her talented team of volunteers have been creating a series of floats in recent weeks to depict that theme.

“With the help of my great friend Fatima we came up with something that has not been done,” Ponceano said of the bodo de leite theme. “It is something interesting and different.” The OLM Celebration requires the work of many people, Ponceano added. A small army of volunteers, some who have been involved in the Celebration for many years, make it all

possible, he said. And now, after months of planning and countless hours on the part of the officers and the legion of volunteers whose support is instrumental, the Celebration has once again arrived. “We invite everybody to come to our Celebration,” Ponceano said. “We would love to see everybody there, and we thank everybody who gave donations or helped in any way.”

In 1935 a festa was held by the Portuguese American Club in spite of the fact that the statue of Our Lady of Miracles had not yet arrived, nor had the Our Lady of Miracles Society been formed or sanctioned by the local church. In 1937 each group named a queen for their festa. In 1938 the two groups merged to form The Our Lady of Miracles Celebration Committee.

Dedicated volunteers add floral touch to Celebration GUSTINE - The thousands of flowers which grace the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles, adorn the statue of Our Lady and decorate the Gustine Pentecost Society Hall during the OLM Celebration each autumn are carefully prepared by a dedicated group of volunteers. The team is led by Florie Nunes, who has been involved with floral decorations for the OLM Celebration since the early 1990s and has led the group for about a dozen years. “We have always been involved as directors and always helped with the decorating,” said Nunes. “The Celebration took the flowers in-house (in the early 1990s) and I was helping Odelia Rocha, who used to do it, and it just evolved from there.” The floral team members share a common devotion and willingness to work long hours as the Celebra-

tion approaches. The planning starts far in advance, Nunes said, when she confers with that year’s president to go over details of the floral decorations. “I meet with the president, and we talk about what their vision is and what their colors are,” she explained. “Some presidents have an idea of what they want to do and I help them execute it. Some just come in and say ‘Do whatever’. I work with their color scheme and pull it together from there. “They are very appreciative. When they’re happy,” Nunes said of the presidents, “I’m happy.” Nunes said she tries to create floral variations from one year to the next. “I try to do something different every year. It takes a lot of thought and planning,” she explained. The floral team works

FLOWERS

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 with two deliveries of flowers for each Celebration. The first arrived Monday of this week, consisting of flowers that will be decorating the church when the Celebration novenas begin Friday evening. Nunes and her team of half-dozen or so volunteers waste no time beginning to prepare the flowers and are busy throughout the week preparing the arrangements - sometimes working into the early morning hours to make sure everything is ready for the Celebration. The addition of a refrigerated floral room a couple years ago in Parish Center II has made their job much easier, Nunes said. Previously, they worked in a floral room at the GPS Hall but then had to truck the arrangements over to the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. After the flowers are moved into place in the Shrine of OLM Friday, the

statue of Our Lady is painstakingly decorated. “Everything else is done before hand and goes into place first,” Nunes explained. “Her flowers are done (Friday) to be the freshest. They are cut and freshly placed right there in church.” A second delivery of flowers will be arriving on Sept. 2. Those flowers will be prepared at the GPS Hall and put in place there in time for the Sept. 5 fados entertainment at the hall and remain through the busy weekend ahead. Then, on Friday, Sept. 6, with the big weekend at hand, the flowers adorning the statue of Our Lady will be redone and the arrangements at the shrine of OLM are refreshed. That time, Nunes said, is one that she appreciates the most. The flowers are freshened and a stillness falls over the church, she reflected. “My best is to just sit in the pew and be in the calmness of the church. I can’t really describe the feeling,” Nunes expressed.

The group also creates the bouquets which queens carry in the Celebration, and will help as needed with decorating the cappella erected in Henry Miller Park each year. Their efforts are a labor of love and shared devotion. Dedicated volunteers such as the late RoseMarie Vierra, who passed away in 2018, gave of their time for many years to prepare the flowers for the Celebration. The group also does flowers for the GPS festa, Nunes noted. “We are very committed to doing this,” Nunes shared. “There is no way one person can do all that. It requires a lot of manpower and hours.” She views her involvement in the floral project as simply using God-given talents in a manner that celebrates her faith. “It is for the love of Our Lady,” she explained. “For as long as I can do this I will. The best gift you can give somebody is the gift of your time. We are here to serve and help however we can.”

Bettencourt to represent OLM as senior queen Izabel Bettencourt will accept the crown of Our Lady of Miracles senior queen prior to mass Sunday morning, Sept. 8, and will represent the organization for the year to come. The Stevinson resident is 11 years of age and a sixthgrade student at Hilmar Middle School. She said she has enjoyed learning the history and traditions of the Celebration, which she has attended regularly in recent years. Being a queen is new to Izabel, she said, but she did substitute on occasion as a sidemaid for last year’s queen. “I like the dances and

enjoy being with friends,” Izabel said of the festas. Izabel, the daughter of Jaime Bettencourt and Nedia Dinis, also enjoys dance and is involved in a LusoAmerica folklore group. Attending festas is a generational tradition in the queen’s family. Her mother was born and raised in the Azores. “The festas were very simple there,” Dinis explained. “We would dress in white for the parade. We did not have those queens back home. That is America’s tradition.” Izabel selected two friends, Luana Gomes and Natalie Machado, as her sidemaids.

Festa traditions ingrained in family of junior queen At 4 years of age, young Avery Meneses will soon be representing one of the most well-known celebrations of faith and Portuguese tradition. The experience will be new to her.....but involvement in Portuguese festas spans generations in her family. Avery is the daughter of Aaron and Melissa Meneses of Turlock. She is a pre-kindergarten student at Our Lady of Miracles Catholic School in Gustine, where her mother is a director. Avery’s great-uncle, Domingos Ponceano, is this year’s OLM president and asked her if she would be junior queen. The opportunity to represent OLM as a queen is an honor, said her mother, who was a queen for Livingston and a sidemaid for Stevinson while growing up. “When we had the opportunity we couldn’t pass it by,” said Meneses. “We were raised going to a lot of the festas around here. It was what we did, and the OLM Celebration is very significant.” Meneses said the family has long supported the Celebration, though having Avery represent OLM as queen takes that involvement to a new level. Her older brothers, Meneses noted, have helped carry the statutes in past Celebrations. “To have the opportunity to represent Our Lady of Mira-

cles, there really is no greater honor,” Meneses reflected. “We just hope that it blesses Avery in her future for being part of it.” Raising the children in the Portuguese heritage was an important consideration in the family’s decision to move back to California after living a few years in Texas, she noted. Attending festas was a big part of family life growing up, she added. “That was just where our family gathered. It wasn’t just a profession of faith, it was a gathering of families,” Meneses shared. “We grew up in that together, and we want to pass that down through our own children. We wanted them to grow up around the culture.” Avery’s commitment to serve as junior queen for the next year involves the family as a whole, her mother added, particularly when festas roll around next spring. “It will be a good way for us to spend the summer, representing the faith,” she expressed. Avery enjoys dancing and likes school crafts. She chose two friends, Sadie Pimentel and Ava Silva, as her sidemaids. “One dances with Avery, and the other has a special devotion,” said Meneses. “It was just fitting (that they were selected).”

Avery Meneses is the 2019-20 OLM junior queen.

Mendes leads OLM processions as marshal GUSTINE - Scott Mendes grew up around Portuguese festas and the Our Lady of Miracles Celebration. As a child, he was an altar boy who assisted the priests who officiated the novenas held as part of the OLM Celebration, and at a young age he walked animals in the bodo de leite, or parade of cows. Today Mendes leads those parades as marshal for the Celebration. Mendes is at the forefront of the numerous parades which are part of the OLM Celebration, helping organize processions which often include more than 100 participating groups. The parades are distinctly different. On Saturday morning of the OLM Celebration weekend, the bodo

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17 de leite brings dozens of trademark carts with their squeaking wheels, floats reflecting the chosen theme, entertainers and much more. Sunday brings the processions of visiting queens to and from mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles. Scores of Portuguese organizations are represented in the traditional procession, as well as bands and other entries. Processions of still another type are held Saturday and Sunday evenings, the first carrying the statue of Our Lady of Miracles from the Shrine of OLM to a cappella in Henry Miller Park, where the faithful will hold an overnight vigil. The second returns the statue to the Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles Sunday evening, bringing the Celebration to a close. The evening processions are less challenging to or-

ganize than the daytime parades with their dozens and dozens of entries to bring into line, Mendes noted. They are also deeply meaningful, he added, as the faithful reflect on their devotion to Our Lady. Mendes, who operates a rural Gustine dairy, got his start as a festa marshal with the Gustine Pentecost Society in 2010 and assumed that role for the OLM Celebration two years later. As marshal, Mendes said, he is responsible for the processions running smoothly. “It is a big responsibility,” he reflected. “When it comes parade time, I help organize the parade and get it started, and then I lead the parade and do my best to keep it all together.” His is by no means a one-man job, Mendes said, as many are involved in the parades. “John Alves is the behind-the-scenes marshal (who helps line up the par-

ticipants),” Mendes noted. “I have a walkie-talkie, and he has one in the back of the parade and lets me know what is going on. I converse with the other directors as well to help keep the parade together.” Once the leading edge of the lengthy processions has reached its destination, Mendes begins directing participants as needed, making sure for example that flag-bearers are properly lined up to greet the OLM queens and statue of Our Lady as they arrive. Mendes also makes sure that flags and floral bouquets are in place Monday evening at Bella Vista Park for the bullfights. The big weekend comes after a week-long series of novenas and special events attended by all OLM officers. But, Mendes said, the fulfillment is well worth the hours involved. “It is for Our Lady,” he points out. He is willing to continue serving in that role.

WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE RICH HERITAGE OF THE OUR LADY OF MIRACLES CELEBRATION

“It is hard to find people to do these things, let alone to keep doing it. You don’t want a new person every year. It takes time to learn and get the hang of things, and it makes it a lot easier when you have the same people around you doing the different jobs,” Mendes remarked. “It is very important to have an idea of how things work to be be able to keep

things rolling.” Mendes credits the help and support of his wife Vanda for making his involvement possible. “If I need help with anything, she is there, and she does a lot for the Celebration as well,” he pointed out. The couple’s twin 6-yearold sons are carrying on the family’s festa tradition. They have ridden on

a bode de leite float in recent years, and have been angels in the novenas. The family’s youngest member, a 1-year-old daughter, will in time be participating as well, Mendes noted. His involvement is a way of honoring Our Lady, Mendes added. “I enjoy it,” he said. “It is quite an experience, and a really good feeling.”

The annual processions of visiting queens to and from mass will be held Sunday, Sept. 8, as part of the OLM Celebration.

Serreta: Where it Began (Editor’s note: The following account of the history and spiritual heritage of the festa honoring Our Lady of Miracles on the Azores island of Terceira, is reprinted from Our Lady of Miracles 50th anniversary book authored by Brian Rosamond.) The Island of Terceira, the easternmost of the central group of islands that form the Azores Archipelago, is approximately seven hundred miles off the coast of Portugal. The uninhabited Azores were discovered by a Royal Portuguese Pilot, Diogo Silves, about 1427 and by the mid-15th Century all nine islands of the archipelago had been permanently settled by Portuguese colonists. Terceira quickly became an important way station for far-ranging Portuguese ships. When Philip II of Spain took possession of Portugal in 1580, the people of Terceira resisted fiercely until overwhelmed two years later by a great Spanish armada. They remained unwilling and troublesome Spanish subjects until Portugal regained its independence in 1640. According to legend, on Sept. 8, 1694, near the village of Serreta on the western slopes of Terceira, a shepherd witnessed the appearance of the Blessed Virgin at a desolate area of burnt and jumbled rock that resembled a natural chapel. The people of Serreta in fact, being too poor to have a real church, used this place as a chapel. Believing the vision was an affirmation of their unwavering faith, the people of Serreta joined the neighboring villages of Freguezia dos Doze and created a sacred statue of the Blessed Virgin which they called Our Lady of Miracles. She was placed in the little church in Freguezia dos Doze. Quite soon after this, the statue vanished from the church only to reappear back at the site of the vision. The astonished vil-

lagers concluded that Our Lady wanted Her statue at this sacred place and accordingly they built a capela of the local dark rock lined in white to honor Her here. The statue remained in this Holy Shrine until 1907 when it was moved into the new church finally built in Serreta. The records are unclear why Our Lady, after over two centuries, wanted or permitted this move. In 1980 an earthquake destroyed most of the church. The wall that contained niches for many statues survived, although every statue except Our Lady’s fell and was broken. Our Lady remained miraculously in place and undamaged. Long before this the people of Serreta had begun to pay homage to Our Lady with a pilgrimage and religious services at the capela on the anniversary of Her vision appearing. It would begin with a candlelight procession in the evening. Neighbors and people in surrounding villages in the rolling hills would see this as a signal, and soon other long lines of candles would wind through the hills converging on the capela as the faithful came to join in the night-long vigil

of devotions and the worship the next morning. For many it is a long and arduous journey, and soon some of the people started to bring their cows along; others brought sweetbread. When they became hungry after prayers, the cows were milked, and the milk and sweetbread were shared with ever yone. This led to the priest blessing the cows, the Bodo de Leite, which became part of the many traditions of the festa. Another tradition after refreshments was for singers to challenge each other to singing extemporaneous hymns in honor of Our Lady, with each vying to sing a better hymn than their predecessors. More music and dancing followed. As the years went by, the pilgrimage expanded into a moving and joyous celebration of faith. Parades were added, cattle were slaughtered to feed the poor and bullfights organized to give ever more honor to Our Lady of Miracles. Eventually the celebration was imported into the United States by Portuguese-Americans in the small town of Gustine, California. But that is another story.
